THIS IS AN EPISODIC QUEST - we're doing things a little differently here, so instead of voting on every action, we post an episode at a time with full illustrations and brief animatic recaps of the previous episode. Think of it like watching a TV show and voting what you want to happen next during the credits. If that sounds like something you're interested in, then enjoy the quest.

And so it goes, onto the second chapter. This one took a bit of work to get done on top of the recap for Ep 1, plus all the figuring of how things worked in this project, plotting the story ahead (as much as can be), etc. But it's done, next week is looking to be much smoother, and hopefully that'll be how it keeps going.

"Okay fine. If you're so smart, YOU think of something!"
[/b]A: No way is he getting away again. I have to get on that train![/b]
Lexi glowers. "Fine!"

As she thinks, the train picks up speed, quickly outpacing her. Even if she could keep up, there's only so much platform left.

Wyatt reaches the back of the car as he tries to keep position with his sister. "Think faster, Lexi!"

As the window her brother calls to her from distances itself, the back of the train car pulls up beside her. The back of a train car... with a railing! She grabs at it, but the train's faster speed pulls her off balance, causing her to stumble and lose hold. Watching her chance escape, something clicks:

There's a railing, because there's a door!

"Wyatt! Can you open that door?!"

Opening the door, Wyatt leans his head out. "What?"

Lexi grimances for a moment, but keeps on task. "Get to the back of the train! Fast!"

"On it!" Jumping the small gap to the next car, Wyatt throws open the door and takes off like a shot through the car, then through the caboose. He reaches his destination in no time, far ahead of his sister. "I'm here! Now what?"

"Get ready to grab my hand!" Lexi shouts back, keeping an eye on the approaching edge of her runway.

"Are you kidding?"

Lexi doesn't respond, instead holding out her hand toward the train while keeping a close watch on the path ahead.

40 yards

The train continues gaining speed.

30 yards

The second car passes her.

20 yards

The caboose comes into her peripheral vision.

10 yards.

"Lexi!"

Her hand closes reflexively as her brother's hand clamps down around her wrist. The difference in speed catches up quickly, and their link is pulled taunt. Lexi leaps forward, clearing the platform as she grabs at the rail and attempts to gain any foothold she can.

But she can't.

Lexi yelps in panic as she slips off the back of the caboose, pulling herself tight to the train as her boot scrapes the stones below. Wyatt slaps his other hand onto his sister's arm, braces himself on the rail, and leans back, but with the position his sister is in, he can't get her up and over. "C'mon! You gotta pull yourself up!"

Lexi takes a breath, then gives it her best to heave herself up. Slowly, she's able to get her elbow over, lean in, and start to push herself onto the train. Eventually, the twins' combined effort is enough to send them both to the floor, safely on the train.

Wyatt sits up, while Lexi just continues to lie face down, attempting to catch her breath. "Wow! Nice job, Action Sister!"

"Shut up," comes a muffled reply. "I wouldn't have to be 'Action Sister' if you hadn't been so reckless!"

"Well if I'm so reckless, why didn't you just tell me to jump off the train?"

"I--..." Lexi shocks upright, then turns to her brother, eyes wide with unbridled frustration at just about everything. "WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST JUMP OFF THE TRAIN?!"

"Because I wanna check out this circus. Duh."

Lexi begins to shake, ever so slightly.

Lexi slouches back against the window while staring at her knees, arms folded and feet up on the bench so that a certain someone can't sit next to her.

A certain someone pokes his head over from the next row back. "Oh come on, quit being a baby. First of all, that was awesome and you know it. Second, we're on this cool train. And third, neither of us have seen a circus before. This is gonna be fun. Have some fun." No response. "Nnnnnnow. Start fun."

"This ISN'T fun! We're stuck on a stupid train to some stupid place instead of getting stupid groceries and it's all your stupid fault!"

"You seem like you're upset about something. Perhaps I could interest you in this colorful and informative document about your destination to cheer you up?" The circus flyer slowly appears over the seatback next to Wyatt's face.

"Gimme that," Lexi snaps as she snatches the paper, leaving a small piece of it still in Wyatt's fingers.

"I'm keeping this."

In response, Wyatt receives a flat-handed shove to the face, pushing him backwards and out of sight.

Lexi flattens it out against her knees and scans for any useful information, but finds none. It's just a bunch of flowery rambling about the event. There's no name of a company involved. No contact information. No schedule of events. There isn't even a real date other than "today." Angrily, she folds the paper and shoves it in her pocket, where she retrieves her phone.

"What's up?" A single eye peeks between the wall and the edge of the seat. "Did they have a website to check or something? I told you everything is compu--"

"I'm calling mom."

"Oh come ON."

"Be quiet." Lexi makes a few small gestures on her phone.

Wyatt groans and slinks out of view.

Waiting for the ringtone, Lexi instead receives a small chime, signaling that the call was ended. The screen flickers, it's image becoming distorted, and turns off. Infact, everything turns off as the entire car goes dark. "Wyatt??" There's a touch of nervousness to her voice.

"I didn't do it!"

"Where are you?"

"On a train."

"WYATT."

"WHAT?"

"WHERE ARE--" A sudden light washes through the car, and as it fades, the outside world is visible again.

Vibrant colors pour through the window; a shocking contrast to the previous scenery. All of it appears to be a circus; a monumental circus ground sprawling in every direction.
Both twins press up against the windows in awe, attempting to see everything they can.

"Where are we?"

"...At the greatest show we'll ever see."

The train's whistle signals it's arrival at the new station. Shortly after, the doors slide open, and out springs a very energetic Wyatt. "--gonna be SO cool. I mean, you saw what I saw, and what I saw was cool, so we gotta get going if we're gonna see... um..." There appears to be no sister next to him.

Lexi stands in the doorway, refusing to disembark.

"Why are you still on the train?"

Lexi flails an arm wildly at the general vicinity. "Is NONE of this weird to you? Who's running these trains? What route did we even take? Have you ever even LOOKED at a train map? There aren't any tunnels like that off of the platform we were on. How did we not hear about this circus coming, and it's THIS big! I just..." Her arm falters, then drops. "...I wanna go home."

"Lexi..." Wyatt's voice is low and gentle. "Get off the stupid train."

Folding her arms defiantly, "There is no way I'm getting off this train."

Suddenly, a low groan is heard, accompanied by random metallic clanks and clonks as car shudders. Starting at the engine, the train's lights begin to shut off, progressing toward the last remaining passenger. As the darkness gets closer, the noise gets louder.

Lexi slowly and reflexively backs away, stepping out of the car. The moment she does, the sounds stop. A whistle blows, and the train slowly pulls away.

"But..." All Lexi can do is stare at what just happened.

Wyatt stands next to his sister, watching as well. "Well, huh."

Wyatt turns, ready to move on. "Okay, so lets' go!"

"No way," Lexi returns, matter-of-factly. "We are staying right here until another train comes, and we are going home."

Wyatt looks as confused as he is amazed. "You wanna get back on another one of those wrecks, take a ride through the mysterious terror tunnel, and hope you make it back home just to finish some shopping instead of staying here and seeing what ELSE this place can do?"

"Anything that can be described with words like 'wreck', 'mysterious', and 'terror' is not something I'm interested in."

"Yeah, but that was describing the way out."

"And you want to go IN?"

"Uh, yes. Yes I do."

"WHY??"

"Because this is the coolest, most amazing, and incredibly interesting thing that has ever happened to me, and I'm not just going to turn around and leave."

"And this is the craziest, most concerning, and incredibly terrifying thing that has ever happened to me, and I'm not just going to go out and get killed!"

"Well, I'm going."

"Well, I'm the only one with money for tickets."

"Well I'll just find another way in!"

"Do you REALLY want to commit a crime at this... nightmare carnival??"

"N-no, but--"

"Wyatt, this place is WEIRD. We have to get OUT of here."

"Can't we just..." Wyatt trails off, failing to form any sort of actual counter-argument.

The conversation is cut short by the shrill report of another train's approach. However, just as the whistle blows, a rustling is heard in the bushes surrounding the platform.

Lexi's focus snaps directly toward the sound. "What was that?"

"Probably just some dumb animal," Wyatt replies glumly.

"L-like an escaped tiger or something??"

"Like a dumb squirrel or something. Calm down."

Lexi can't shake the feeling that something is watching them, though it could just very well be nerves due to being in such a creepy place. Still, she becomes increasingly impatient for their departure's arrival.

The train pulls up to the platform, again, the tin whistle announcing it's presence. Again, the bushes shake. Again, only Lexi seems to care. As soon as the doors open, she's on board, and turns to face her brother. "Come on, let's get outta here quick."

However, now it's Wyatt who hesitates, turning to look back at the path leading down to the main entrance of the circus city.

"Wyatt, c'mon," Lexi pleads. "I can't pull you onto a caboose!" She tries to speak jokingly, but the worry on her face is plain.

It's brother vs sister in a stand-off between a heart for adventure and a mind for reason, but who's to say that train can even be trusted? Who's to say the circus is any better? Will the twins regroup on a train hopefully bound for home, or will they part ways at the station? Find out next week on Digital Wonderland!

Feel free to ask the cast anything you want to help you make your decision. Answers will be posted Saturday night, and voting closes Sunday night.

Siding with Lexi. Never trust clowns. Get the hell out of clowndodge on that one way train going any place other than a circus.

Side with Lexi

We're already here might as well go all the way. Side with Wyatt

Side with Wyatt. Willy Wonka taught us never to go on mystery tunnel vehicle rides.

Rolled 1 (1d2)

Well since we're locked in a tie, let's take care of this the easy way:
1 is Wyatt
2 is Lexi
