You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Now, last time, we had a choice of what upgrades to get from Archmagus Elias, but due to the late hour we couldn't quite pick up the consensus needed to definitively decide, so we'll be redoing that vote!

ELEMENTAL ENCHANTMENT: A high level enchantment to any single weapon. Elemental enchantments grant even mundane weapons special properties that make them even more effective in combat.

ARCANE WARD: A special magical item that significantly increases the wearer's perception, allowing them to sense the presence of not only living creatures, but areas of high magical activity as well.

FORTRESS SHROUD: A highly valued relic in the Mage's possession. While in normal circumstances this cloak behaves like a very high quality piece of clothing, when magical energy is injected into it, the cloak will harden into any shape with a resilience that exceeds skill. A helpful item for particularly the particularly soft skinned Mages.

You point to the the magical cloak, the Fortress Shroud. You figure that considering Nino was only a young girl and didn't really have much in the way of personal protection, such an item would be the most beneficial for her.

"Ah, a fine choice." Elias nods as he reaches his arm out. The Fortress Shroud levitates from its stand and floats over to you. Naru quickly snatches it out of the air.

"Hmmmm, yeah, it's the real thing." Naru nods as she runs the material through her fingers.

"I'm rather offended that you don't trust the quality of our relics." Elias remarks with bemusement, his skull face turning to her.

"No offense, but I always operate under the assumption everybody's trying to scam me. It's never failed me so far." Naru shrugs as she slides the shroud into her pack and tosses the vial of Manticore venom to Elias. The Archmage doesn't even bother physically catching it, merely waving his hand and causing the vial to levitate and float down to a distant shelf.

"I suppose I cannot fault you for that." Elias chuckles and turns to you. "On that note, I've heard some... interesting stories from Caroline and Justine regarding high levels of magic activity near the Monastery. You don't happen to know anything about that, do you?"

Elias' inhuman eyes glow a bright orange as they stare at you, wondering what your answer will be.

You glance at Elias and then to Naru, who manages to discern what you're trying to say.

"So you got any sort of 'errands' you need a couple down on their luck adventurers to handle?" Naru speaks in your stead. "Something ya can't don't want to get involved in yourself?"

"Hmmmm, interesting." Elias puts a hand up to his bony chin. "I may have a couple matters that need looking into, if you are willing to do so."

RUIN EXPEDITION: An expeditions of Mages and Mana Knights were sent to investigate a newly discovered Ruin, but nothing has been heard from them since. Perhaps someone should go check in on them?

MATERIAL GATHERING: A colony of Harpies seem to have begun practicing some form of magic. The Mages would like someone to head over to the colony and "collect" their charms and totems for study.

You nod to the offer to find the Ruin expedition.

"Ah, we were about to contact the Guild about that particular matter, but I don't mind letting you and your companions handle the matter." Elias nods. "Caroline and Justine will provide a map to the Ruin as well as the list of those missing. And please do keep this quiet, will you? Only the Mages know of this Ruin and we would like to keep it that way."

"And you don't want it getting out that you lost a whole expedition either, got it." Naru nods.

Elias doesn't verbally respond to that, though his eyes smolder with... rage? Bemusement? It was hard to tell from a creature with no facial expression.

You and Naru are then ported back to the front gate, where Justine calmly hands you a small satchel of documents. Your quest information. The two Mana Knights bid you farewell. Well, Justine, at least. Caroline, as always, pretends she's happy to see you leave.

"Jeeeeeeez." Naru sighs as she stretches her arms. "Those Mages are always such a stuffy bunch. No wonder Nino wanted to ditch 'em."

You nod in agreement.

"Anyways, you wanna hit a tavern before he we head back? It's still a bit early." Naru suggests. "And, no offense to you guys, but your Monastery ale gets kinda stale because making different flavors doesn't seem to occur to you guys."

You shrug. You don't see any harm in it.

"All riiiiight!" Naru actually genuinely smiles and hooks an arm around yours. "C'mon, I know this place where the drinks are cheap and not watered down!"

Of course, Naru takes you to a rather disreputable looking hole in the wall tucked away in one of the city's many back alleys. Well, if Naru vouched for it, you suppose you shouldn't judge the place by it's cover-

"One whiskey! Leave the bottle!" Naru barks as she sits at the bar and nudges your shoulder. "You in the mood for anything? My treat!"

"Heeey, you're pretty good at this." Naru chuckles. "I expected ya to fold over like last time!"

You cross your arms sternly. Templars had more resilience than that.

"Ha, I suppose so." Naru chuckles as she slaps down a few silver pieces on the counter. "C'mon, I wouldn't want to make ya carry me back to the Monastery."

As the two of you make your way to the gates you suddenly see a large process of people gathering, with guards lined across the sides of the road to prevent access.

"Fuck, some kinda parade or something?" Naru mutters. "We should just turn back and take another gate, then."

You stop to see what the commotion was about. Thanks to your height, you were able to peer over the head of the crowd rather easily. Naru stands on her toes to try to get a better look, too proud to accept your offer to let her sit on your shoulders.

"Huh, looks the City Guard's standard MO for accepting an arriving royal..." Naru informs you.

Indeed, the Guards that you could see were standing at attention in full ceremonial armor with exquisite gold inlays rather than the standard light steel and leather armor they wore for general use.

And then the head of the arriving process arrives and the presence of large, intricate antlers poking up above the crowd told you all you needed to know as mighty stags trotted through the city streets, their riders bearing armor made of wood and leaves.

Elves.

"Oh shit." Naru grunts, remembering the clear animosity your order had with Elves. "Uhhhh, maybe we should get going now..."

You resist Naru's attempts to pull away. You had to know who was arriving. This was important to you and to your order.

Closely following the Elven cavalry vanguard was a carriage crafted almost entirely out of ornately crafted wood, the surface so flawless that you suspected the carriage was grown instead of actually built.

And perched atop. looking eternally smug as all elves did, was a face that you recognized, from reputation rather than personal experience.

Princess Semiramis, guardian of the Fae Realms and one of the most prominent figures in Elven nobility. She was dressed all in black, looking a like black raven of dreadful omen. Her being here was no accident.

You figure that with Elven nobility present in the city, Lucina would have to have known about her arrival...

You finally allow Naru to pull you away, and the two of you exit out of the next gate over, where the regular city traffic had been diverted to. You of course catch some suspicious glares for the Guards posted at the gate, they don't do anything else.

And so it's just you and Naru walking the lonely road from Eisenwand to the Monastery.

"Man, this is a pretty good cloak." Naru muses as she inspects the Fortress Shroud once again. No doubt she wanted to distract you from the Elven procession you just witnessed. "Bet the little squirt is gonna love this."

You nod in agreement. It was pretty easy to imagine the smile on Nino's face.

You put a reassuring hand on Naru's shoulder. She didn't have to pretend she didn't like Nino. Plus, Nino actually really looked up to her as the grizzled, experienced adventurer. Not quite the accurate picture, but you weren't about to disabuse Nino of that notion.

"W-well, I guess I gotta fill in for your lazy ass, then." Naru harumphs, trying to regain her composure.

By this point, the two of you have returned to the Monastery. You could tell the air was far more tense than before. Did they know about the arrival of Semiramis?

"Catch ya later." Naru nods to you as she splits off, no doubt to give the new cloak to Nino.

You immediately head over to Havel's chambers, intent to get to the bottom of this. Naturally, Havel is present at his desk, reading a pile of correspondence, no doubt from the rest of the Templar leadership.

"Ah, you've returned." Havel rumbles, obviously not surprised at your presence. "I take it you've seen Semiramis, then."

You nod.

"Considering you're still standing here, I suppose I should be grateful you didn't start another incident upon seeing her." Havel sighs. "But as you would suspect, her presence here is highly troubling."

You eye the correspondence on his desk.

"The Marshals are very well aware of this." Havel explains. "Of course, this sudden movement is concerning, especially with the bulk of our forces tied up with the Northern Orc tribes. I have been tasked with keeping an eye on developments here."

You turn your gaze back to Havel.

"While our resources are somewhat limited here, do not underestimate my capabilities." Havel grunts. "There are quite a number of residents in Eisenwand who share their sympathies with the Templars, after all."

You give Havel a trusting nod. You knew that if he needed your help, he would have asked for it.

"Other than that, the little 'incident' with you and Morgan has largely been forgotten due to Semiramis' arrival. A silver lining, I suppose." Havel grunts. "Also, High Marshal Helbrecht congratulates you on the slaying of the Manticore, and requests a trophy be sent for display to the Great Hall."

High Marshal Helbrecht, the Grand Champion himself has deigned to notice you? A great honor indeed.

"Well, unless you have any other questions, I still have some matters to care of." Havel tells you.

You look to Havel and point to one of the many portraits adorning his wall, the one depicting Princess Lucina.

"Ah, you want to know what the Eisenwands think?" Havel sighs. "Officially, the royal family welcomes any and all foreign dignitaries to their city, which is open to all races and beliefs. Unofficially, they think this is a power play by the Elves to push their agenda in the Frontier. And I think you know what that would be."

You nod. Obviously, the Elves would want to "preserve" the relatively untouched forests in the Frontier, which in reality would serve as their territorial claims to the region, a topic that was always controversial in the civilized kingdoms. Legally, only the Eisenwands were given the privilege of granting settlement rights in the Frontier, which made them a very lucrative family to have connections with.

"Though I doubt the Eisenwands would cave to such obvious and petty tactics so easily." Havel rumbles. "The Elves will most likely stick around for a few days before leaving."

You nod at that and make your exit. Hopefully that's all that will come from this little Elven visit.

Looks like we've got a tie so we'll have to roll it off!

You head over to the library, where you assume Nino and Naru would be. You wanted to see how Nino was being acclimated to her new piece of gear.

You walk up to the front door and begin to open it...

You open the doors and walk through, and at that moment you feel something wrap around your ankles and instantly harden, tripping you up and causing you to fall forward on the ground with a loud CLANG.

"Haha! See? I told you it would work!" Nino says happily as she pulls the Fortress Shroud back into her hands.

"You realize you were lucky that it was good ol tin can here, because literally anyone else would have cracked their skull on the floor." Naru grumbles as she gives Nino a rough, punishing noogie.

"Gaaaaaah!" Nino whimpers. "I-I just wanted to teeeeest it!"

You hit Nino lightly on the top her head with a chopping motion. Not hard enough to hurt her, of course, but enough to let her know not to repeat such a venture in the future.

"Uuuuuuuuuu...." Nino whines.

"Serves ya right, squirt." Naru shakes her head.

"But this Fortress Shroud is so COOL!" Nino says as she wraps herself up in it. "Not only does it harden on command, but it's SUPER comfortable, too!"

You nod. It was certainly an item she deserved, given all that she's done for the party.

"Hey, heeeeeeey." Nino warps herself around one of your arms. "Do you think you can help me test the shroud? I wanna see how resilient it is!"

You have a sneaking suspicion you knew exactly how she wanted to test it.

You nod. It would be a good way for you to know the Fortress Shroud's tolerances, as well.

"All right!" Nino grins as she takes off her cloak. There's a slight blue glow as she injects mana into the piece of cloth, and it immediately hardens into a half globe. "Go on! Hit is as hard as you can!"

You put your halberd in a two handed grip and bring it swinging down on the Fortress Shroud. There's no metallic CLANG like you would expect from hitting steel armor. In fact, there really isn't any sound at all. Not surprising, since the Fortress Shroud was still cloth, albeit highly magical cloth. The Fortress Shroud retains its strength, not even budging at all.

With one twist, and you bring the axe edge of your halberd forward and swing again. Once again, the impact is soundless, but you note your halberd sliding off the Shroud, the blade unable to find anything to bite into and cut.

If this was what was going to protect Nino, then you had no objections.

"Wow, the Archmagus really went all out on this one!" Nino marvels. "There are lot of shrouds like this on the market that wear out after only a couple of hits! But this is definitely the real deal!"

You nod. He may be a mage, but Elias was not the type to try and scam you. You turn to Naru, who you find has fallen fast asleep on a pile of books, an almost serene look on her face. Perhaps that whiskey had finally caught up to her.

"Aw, guess she was pretty tired." Nino frowns. "She was also smelling funny again today. Was she drinking again?"

You nod.

"Sheesh. I don't get what's so great about it." Nino pouts.

You pat Nino on the head. She'll understand the intricacies of drinking one day. But not today. Not on your watch.

"Nnnnnn, okay." Nino nods and turns to Naru again. "Sooooo, should we just leave her here? She looks so comfortable..."

You do have to admit, seeing Naru curled up on a pile of books was pretty adorable.

You shrug. Naru looks fine where she is.

"Well, we should at least make sure she doesn't get cold!" Nino says as she pulls out her old, mundane cloak and drapes it over the sleeping Naru like a blanket.

You look to Nino.

"Ha, it's not like I need it anymore thanks to this!" Nino twirls around in her new Fortress Shroud. "Naru even made sure it was the same color as the old one!"

You nod. It was a nice gesture.

"Anyways, anyways, I heard an ELVEN PRINCESS came into the city today!" Nino's eyes sparkle. "Aaaaaaaa, wish I went with you! That would have been so COOL to see!"

You wag your finger at Nino. There was nothing "cool" about Elves.

"Right, right, eternal enemy!" Nino nods. "But still, must be really something to see an Elven princess running around!"

You shrug. You suppose that was true.

With one last headpat, you leave Nino back to her own devices as she returns to her studies. You head back to your room, where you immediately take out the documents Elias provided you regarding the quest you had undertaken for the Mages.

You peer at the list of names of the expedition members, but don't do much more than a cursory glance. You didn't really recognize any of the names, and you were more concerned with the exact number of members in the expedition. From the list, there were two Mages, each with a Mana Knight for protection, and six apprentices. Quite a lot of people to keep track of.

You then look at the map which showed the location of the Ruin, very deep in the Frontier. Even farther than the Ruin Solaire had told you about.

This was going to be quite the journey. Just getting to the Ruin was going to be a feat in itself...

You immediately start writing down a list of the needed supplies. There were no other ways to expedite the travel time like sailing. It was going to be an overland slog there-

You're then interrupted by a soft knock on your door.

"Hey, it's me." Morgan says softly from the other end. "Errr, is this a bad time?"

You open the door without question, and Morgan gingerly steps in.

"So, I heard what happened when you went in the city." She mumbles. "More Elves moving in, huh?"

You nod. It was a concerning development, but nothing that you should be panicking over.

"Ah, good. Wouldn't want you running off trying to murder an Elven Princess." Morgan chuckles nervously.

You lean in, your helmet getting very close to Morgan's face. You could tell that this wasn't why she approached you.

"Haaaah, straight to the point, huh." Morgan sighs and then blushes red a bit. "Um, this actually sounds really dumb now that I think about it..."

You tap you foot loudly on the ground, again telling her to get cut straight to the point.

"Fine, fine!" Morgan groans, her ears twitching wildly. "Ugh, why do I even listen to Romulus!?"

Ah yes, she could talk to Romulus now, you remember.

"You took Naru out to drink with earlier today, r-right?" Morgan asks, her face still red.

You nod. Just something to pass the time, honestly.

"W-well, next time we have the chance..." Morgan pauses and then takes a deep breath. "T-take me out to drink, too!"

You nod again. It was a simple enough request.

"W-wait." Morgan's expression darkens a bit. "You agreed to that way too fast..."

Women truly were the most mysterious of creatures...
