Freelancers is a skirmish game where everyone controls their own character, a warrior in power armor, in tactical combat against the xeno scum who invaded your world.

Each time your character survives a mission, they gain a new power from their class. One time only, you can select a power from a different class instead.


Balance Patch 1.2:

General Changes:
Base target number to hit changed from 4+ (60%) to 3+ (70%)
Dash and Stay Down defense bonuses increased from 2 to 4.
Movement cost for vaulting low cover removed.
Bleedout rule added (this always existed, just wasn't written down)

"Mission success, ma'am," he says. "Crawler town secured. One hostage down, one rookie KIA. Couple dozen Scavs, too."

"All right. Nice work." The Captain turns to address the team. "Good job out there. The crawler and its people are safe, and the town manager sends word that they're already back at work. He says they'll make sure we stay good and stocked up on titanium and glassteel for the next while, and if they happen to run into some of the good stuff -- adamantine, mithrite -- we'll be at the top of the list.

"Your first couple missions have gone well, all things considered. But don't get cocky just yet. Overconfidence is a great way to get yourself killed in the field, as you all saw for yourselves. Stay alert, and keep yourself and your teammates covered out there.

"All right, dismissed. Get yourselves a drink or two, but be ready to shake off your hangover. You're going back into action tomorrow."

A short time later, in the command center, a conversation occurs that might be partially overhead by any grunts who happened to pass by:

"So what's the plan here, Captain?" Graves asks. "It's not going to stop at crawler towns. The Scav bastards backed off for a while when the worms and toasters were giving them trouble, but those two have both been quiet for a while now. Dealing with their own shit underground, I guess. Which just leaves us and the Scavs up here on the surface."

Ever since they arrived from the outer dark, centuries ago now, the Scavengers have raided and pillaged human settlements. Ruined or inhabitated, it made little difference to them, and they gleefully wet their blades on anyone who stood against them. Human civilization, already on the brink from ongoing extraterrestrial incursions, was almost powerless to stop these new arrivals from doing as they pleased. Even now, your society long collapsed, and the last remnants of your kind barely holding out in these few strongholds, the Scavs continue their swift and relentless pursuit of your resources like endlessly hungry wolves.

"You're right," the Captain says. "It's about time we did something. The other company leaders and I have been talking. The Knight general as well, and that jackass who says he calls the shots for the Hunters. We're trying to get something together. In the meantime, we'll do what we can on our own. Surgical strikes on valuable targets." She stares intently at the map of Meranth, as though willing a hole in the Scav defenses to reveal itself. "Just got to find the right ones."

"I take it that's why you sent Snow and Alice on that scouting trip, the long way round?"

"Weren't that long. In fact, I expect a pleasant surprise real soon."

"Golden age laboratory," Snow says. "Scav staging area. Weapons. Supplies. Communications."

"Thanes?" asks Graves.

"No. But they've got Seithrs."

"You see any relics?" asks the Captain. "Golden age tech we could salvage?'

"Unconfirmed. Possible."

Graves scratches at his five o-clock shadow, thinking. "If we can get our hands on those, it'll keep the Alchemist happy. She should be able to decrypt them in a few days, and we'll get some new toys for the kids. Those old labs are full of surprises waiting to be turned into weapons." He sighs and shakes his head. "All right, no time to waste, I guess. You want me to set it up for tomorrow morning, Cap?"

"They've done well so far," she says. "So they deserve a rest. Afternoon is fine."

In all too short a time, the night has passed, and the next day dawns. After having your equipment repaired and recharged in the morning, and taking a few quick personal hours -- some write letters home, others pray, and a few haven't stopped drinking since last night --
the free company assembles once again in the hangar, under Graves' supervision.

"Listen up boys, girls and bots," he says, pacing up and down the line. "Another smash and grab today. Our scout's pinpointed a group of Scavs holed up in a Golden Age laboratory, and they've got a lot of supplies that we plan to relieve them of. Grab anything you can that ain't nailed down, blow up anything that is. Haul the loot back to the evac point, then get the hell out of there before you get swarmed by Scav reinforcements. Two small squads of the alien warriors are already running into cover on either flank, the Raiders with heavier weapons and more ornate armor ordering their Thralls into position. Alien alarms wail loudly, and you know that more will be on the way from inside these buildings soon.

Scavs burst out from the small building in the southwest. Cayde guns down the leading Thrall with his LMG. The Raider behind him takes cover in the doorway, and shoots back with his laser rifle at Cayde, dealing 2 damage.

The Scavs in the southeast building charge at Iskander. The Knight blasts the Thrall, but takes a blow from the Raider's swords for 1 damage.

More Scavs emerg from the large building in front. Seeker misses his first shot but hits on his Wired Reflexes attack, blasting a Thrall. A Raider still inside the building aims through the doorway and shoots Seeker for 1 damage.

Another group of xenos comes out of the northeast building and runs for firing positions in cover. One of the Raiders stops to shoot at Smokes, dealing 1 damage.

The alarm continues to sound.

Graves says, "Fox Team, I'm getting a reading from that crate right in front of you. Marking it red on your HUD. Get it open and see what we've got for a present. Hawk Team, sweep that building to the southwest, I'll bet there's something nice in there too."

A flurry of shots rang out, although everyone missed, perhaps over-excited due to their early success. Smokes and Toruc both struck their targets in melee, killing a Thrall each.

Two Thralls shoot at Smokes, but their shots hit his cover.

Iskander blocks Raider 3's blades with his spear.

Two Thralls try to charge out the front door of the main building, but Seeker guns them both down with his Wired Reflexes. The Raider behind them curses him in his alien tongue and shoots him, breaking through Seeker's barrier.

Sigurd was hit with a second grenade, this time from Thrall 9, breaking 1 more armor point -- they seem to know how to pry open a Titan-armored Knight. More Scavs emerged from the northern building, and both shot Sigurd for a total of 3 damage.

Freelancer Turn 3 starts now.

Anyone available to reinforce can roll a d10 to see where the Man Cannon deposits them on the battlefield. Number rolled is the number of spaces forward of Alyosha's current position where you land.

"Hoo boy," you hear Graves saying over the comms. "Encrypted matter! That could be something spicy indeed. Get that thing there back to the evac zone, but uh, just make sure you don't touch it with your bare skin. Alchemist will decrypt that bad boy once it's back at HQ.

"I'm marking the zone in yellow on your HUD. You can drop the loot off there and we'll hoist it up into the dropship."

Three new Freelancers crash to the ground in drop pods, the protective casing cracking open on impact and melting away in red-hot slag. Two Hunters and a Mage shake off the violent method of transport and stand, ready to fight. "Tiger Team, reporting!"

Several laser beams sizzle through the smoke cloud. Rook evades most of them, but still gets tagged by a Thrall's shot for 1 damage.

The persistent Raider 6 shoots Alyosha for 1 damage.

The door to the west of Vacia opens, and a Thrall and Raider emerge. The Thrall takes cover, while the Raider dashes past, almost but not coming within detection range of the stealthed Vacia.

The interior door to the the north of Hiram and Phaws is opened by a Thrall, revealing the room beyond. Inside is a female Scav clad in ragged robes -- a Seithr, one of the Scav's sorceresses. Chanting in a foul speech, runes glowing in a circle around her, she raises her staff and unleashes a bolt of electricity that courses through the air, bouncing from her initial target Hiram to the unfortunate Phaws, dealing 3 and 2 damage respectively.

The Raider on the northwest roof barks orders, and the group of Thralls below him all gang up on the revealed Vacia, dealing a total of 4 damage with a barrage of laser fire.

Seithr 4 conjures a circle of runes in electric azure around her, then gestures, and a bolt of lightning shoots towards Iskandar. It forms another runic circle around the knight, and a ring of crackling electricity traps him in place. He tries to fight against it, but the electromagnetic force is too powerful, and he can't push through it.

"Shit, she's using the force cage," growls Graves. "Iskandar's trapped, but the witch has to concentrate to keep that up. You two who are still down there: if you can hit her, she'll drop the spell, and he can get the hell out of there. On the other hand, you're both in range of the evac zone, and if you stop to shoot her -- well, your chances don't look good.

Sigurd and Alyosha, powerless to help him, dash for the evac zone, grab onto the dropship ropes, and haul themselves skyward. Its final passengers on board, the dropship blasts off, away from the Scav encampment.

Left alone, Iskandar fights against the force cage until his strength is spent. The Seither releases her hold on him, and he falls to the ground.

"Sorry, kid," Graves sighs. "You done your part to help humanity out. You can feel good about that. Anything you want to say?"

"Had a dramatic speech in mind, Commander," Iskandar gasps. The knight is battered, his breathing ragged. He looks around. Through the haze and smoke, he sees the Scav witch in her tattered robes, slowly coming towards him. Her armored soldiers are closing in on all sides. Despite his injuries, Iskandar still finds the will to get to his feet. A Knight must die standing.

"First, Aylosha, Sigurd, you do NOT get to feel bad. I made a stupid mistake. I refuse to make anyone else pay for it. You made the right call. End of story. Also--" Iskandar looks down at the device in his hands, somehow supercharged by the witch's electrical blasts. "I don't have much time left, so don't expect anything too fancy. It was an honor to fight with you guys. Really, I mean it. I wish we could've gotten to know each other better. Now go. I think this plan is going to blow up in this witch's face.

"I guess I really can't avoid this noble stuff, huh?"

A bright light flashes in the Scav camp, followed by a thundering shockwave. The wind passes by the dropship, the Freelancers watching the explosion through the open hatch, as they begin the journey back to company HQ.
