You are Alexander Hickory, an 18 year old juinior professor and graduate from the prestigeous Erbaum Academy. You are currently on a self-directed research journey with two other junior professors in the hopes of achieving greatness in your resective fields. Your primary goal is to study pokemon physiology and are particularly interested in the study of strange and unique characteristics.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to Pokemon Professor Quest!

Rolls will be d100, best of three, unless otherwise specified. Write-ins are always welcome, but I reserve the right to veto. Comments and criticism are appreciated.

You, Maxine, and Mina make your way through the woods back to camp with little trouble and its only noon. When you arrive you find Oliver with the three youngsters he was helping out earlier preparing a decent sized meal and calling you over. You take a seat by the campfire and discuss your trip out into the woods with him.

"So you found a couple of out of place Snover, huh," he says while spraying ketchup on a bun, "Good of you to pick them up. We've been practicing all day and you wouldn't believe how good Nidoran is getting"

He releases his pokemon, and the blue creature is much bigger and more robust. She seems like she may be close to evolving soon. He also pulls out his Dratini, who seems to have benefited from the day's practice herself.

The girls talk amongst themselves and you introduce yourself to the three kids preparing your meal. Just as things are finished, Harold and Veronica come walking up to your party. You remember Veronica from your elemental sciences classes, she was one of the top students in the program but was a little cold to you most of the time. She had very straight, shoulder length dark hair, and narrow eyes. She was thin and payed a lot of attention to her appearance.

Harold was one of your oldest friends, and was always very introverted and focused on his technology and schoolwork, but seemed of a different character now. He was always tall, broad, and heavy but now he carried it differently. He greeted you and Oliver with a rare smile.

"Hope you've been working hard out here," he jokes and takes a seat, "I know I have."

You eat and talk for a while.

You turn to your old friend Harold, "So where are you guys planning to go from Route 115"

"Well, were only going to be here until it splits off to route 121, then we're heading west into Caska."

"That's no surprise to me," Oliver chimes in, "That is where all the big tech innovators are for trainer gear."

"Yeah, and I'm going to visit Professor Fabrebor in Ettleport City to get his advice."

You knew of Fabrebor from your studies somewhat, but mostly from Harold who was something of a fan. He invented a lot of technology for studying pokemon and was a high-ranking collaborator on the pokedex project. You know he had turned to commercial work lately too, working on communications systems for the Doretech Telecom Company.

An idea suddenly comes to mind, and you pull out your research notebook and pen. You ask everyone if they'll be alright with you taking notes on their pokemon to see how they grow and develop. Everyone is fairly enthused with the prospect and they let out their pokemon. You figure its a good group for. You jot down the observations you've made when dealing with your own pokemon first, and share them with the group.

Mina and Maxine offer their opinions that Deino likely had a Garchomp for a parent and Larvitar a Haxorus, owing to their unique features. They don't notice anything off about Beldum, calling him a particularly good specimen and leaving it at that. Both your own and Oliver's Dratinis are from the same spawn, but are vastly different in potential. You share your previously noted observations on Mina and Oliver's pokemon and the others offer their own contributions there as well.

You learn that Harold received a Porygon as a starter. It has exceptional potential all around, with seemingly maximal potential for a pokemon of this type. It is an odd creature and you observe its mechanical motions and strange features. It seems to be made of glass and is strangely light. It's as affectionate as any pokemon to Harold, which you were not expecting. He also caught a Magnemite this afternoon, which you observe with nothing standing out.

Maxine's Happiny is extremely robust and has excellent defenses, but also has unexpectedly high attacking power. Her Snover and yours are equally average, hers is a bit bulkier and yours more speedy, but they share a serious nature. Her Teddiursa is a jolly little thing and has good defense but nothing else of note. Veronica's Smoochum is geared toward speed and special attacking power, and is average otherwise. Her fresh caught Vullaby is somewhat below average in attacking power and otherwise unremarkable.

You note all of these observations, with additions by your friends. It takes a few hours and everyone gets into it. Eventually it is time to hit the road. Harold asks you for a battle before his party departs for route 121

The two of you walk out and scope out a spot, Magnemite and Beldum in tow. They interact very readily compared to what you've seen from Beldum in the past, chirping and buzzing along. The two of you take positions and Oliver begins to count down.

"Use Hidden Power"

"Thundershock"

The Magnemite is an odd creature that seems to be constantly moving, spinning its magnets to hover slightly over the ground. When it charges its attack, the magnets rotate more furiously than you had seen yet. A blast of lightning flies toward Beldum, who launches his own blast of concussive force toward his opponent right as it hits him. The Magnemite takes the hit without seeming too effected, but Beldum definately felt the thundershock.

You call out for another hidden power attack, but you instruct Beldum to get a bit closer. Harold calls for a sonicboom as Beldum moves and it strikes with extreme precision and knocks your pokemon out of its momentum. The blue cyclops regains his bearings and launches off his attack.

The force hit Magnemite harder than last time, but its still mostly healthy while Beldum is probably around half-strength.

"Thundershock it again," Harold calls out

"Keep hitting it with your power," you say, feeling the pressure.

You know it isn't looking good for you, Magnemite are tough opponents and Beldum doesn't have any good options here. He still soldiers on and charges his attack, facing down his fellow metal pokemon. The magnets begin whirring wilder than ever and the stray bolts of lightning find their mark with a crack. Beldum is scortched and you know he's hurting, but he blasts off his ball of psychokinetic force and Magnemite is starting to look a little worn.

"Beldum," you call out, "Can you go on?"
He turns only slightly toward you and you feel a strong mental pressure telling you he is resolute. He charges his power up as much as he can and waits for your command. He stares down his fellow mechanized pokemon, who begins charging his own attack. The seconds feel like an eternity, and you look toward Harold. His deep-set eyes focused on yours.

You both call out at once, "Attack!"

The two metal monsters blast off at each other, putting their all into their attacks. Magnemite is blown back and dented slightly by the force of Beldum's psychic blast, but he keeps spinning his magnets more forcefully than you've ever seen. A thick bolt of electricity blasts your pokemon back. He is still concious, but barely, an he appears to be paralyzed.

"All right," you say, retrieving Beldum back to his ball, "I think that's enough data for now."

Harold retrieves his Magnemite and you walk over to shake his hand.

"Good job, man. That Magnemite is something else."

"Thanks. Your Beldum is really amazing. I've never heard of one using hidden power before."

Oliver joins in and offers up his own excited commentary at what he calls "Battle of the Robots," and talking about how his next catch is going to be steel-type for sure. The three of you joke around for a little further, and you feel briefly nostalgic. Its broken by Valerie insisting they have to leave before it gets too late, and you admit she has a point.

Your two groups head out along route 115 and travel together for about a half hour before the route splits in two. You wave off your classmates and wish them well as you come to the junction. After another hour or so, the terrain begins to shift slightly. More and more trees begin to dominate the landscape, and the travel gets easier with the more even roads.

You keep going this way for another half hour and start to feel the effects of the journey. Oliver is still in good spirits but Mina certainly looks like she could use a rest. The three of you sit by the road and plan your next move. Oliver wants to keep moving quickly so that he can reach the Aulder City Gym before its too late, but you're sure he'll accept a small detour.

You suggest to your partners that you ought to take one last look at the rocky places while you're still near enough. Oliver starts to protest, but you quell his time concerns by suggesting a looping route that will meet back up with the road, cutting out a lot of the time loss. He resolves to make good use of the time and find himself a steel type pokemon.

The three of you head down your plotted route, it's not so much mountainous as it is rocky at this point but it ought to do nicely for your aims. You peek into tiny alcoves here and there as you go, scaring the hell out of a few sandshrew in the process. You manage to find a few hard stones, a moon stone, and one very nice oval stone, as well as an everstone.

Mina searches around the area for a while longer than you and manages to find a passage into a chamber. The two of you follow her in and find an elaborate series of carvings, which she identifies as early Mercian and starts frantically taking pictures.

You and Oliver simply watch her go at it for a while, until a bunch of steel circles start floating off the floor. You quickly realize these are no mere plates, but Klink instead.

"Larvitar, bite the left one," you command, "Beldum, take the other one down."

Your pokemon move to meet their charging opponents. Larvitar flies toward his quarry and delivers a well placed bite which causes it to flinch and injures it significantly. Beldum is doing fairly well for himself as well, despite the Klink's resistance his take down was almost enough to defeat his enemy outright.

You hear Oliver call his attacks, then watch Nidoran knock out one of the Klink with a double kick. She then moves on to help Dratini who is having less luck wrapping his own enemy. Oliver has a ball in his hand already, and directs Dratini to pull back and wrap up a distant Klink instead. Duskull and Gastly are also out, but they have little trouble with the one enemy left to them so Mina calls Gastly back to give the other ghost a chance to practice.

"Same again guys," you call out

Beldum lifts up his enemy and throws it back to the ground, it is down for the count and barely had a chance to fight back. Larvitar bites down again at your command, swirling black energy coating into his fangs. They actually pierce into the Klink this time, and you quickly call him back in fear he has killed it by mistake

Oliver watches as his Dratini slowly chips away at his chosen Klink while Nidoran stands by for support. Eventually the gear creature slows and sputter almost to a stop, and Oliver throws his ball. It barely shakes at all before clicking shut, and the room goes quiet.

Mina already defeated her opponent and has returned back to investigating the room, she manages to find an opening that leads to a smaller chamber. Inside, there is a pedestal on which sits an odd keystone which Mina carefully removes and stores. You also find a particularly old painting within which she cuts down and stores in a special container.

"This is really an amazing discovery," she explains, "I had no idea there were ruins this far north, no one did. Even a little outpost like this is a big deal."

Oliver calls your attention to the time, eager to get back on track. You now have less of a space cushion, you could only afford a small distraction at this point to make it to the city on time.

Since we're probably offloading the Snover once Pine can find a home for it, I wonder what might be worth picking up.

We have surprisingly good type coverage.
Beldum has Normal + Psychic
Larvitar has Dark
Deino has Dragon + Ground
Dratini is slacking a bit but some training can cover that.

Dark, Fairy, and Grass types still give us a bit of an issue. As does Steel apparently because we don't use the Deino.

some Fire, Fighting, or Bug moves might help counteract that a bit.
We're coming up to a Forest, that likely has options for picking a Bug type.
Hope we find a Larvesta. One of those would be nice.
Scyther wouldn't go amiss either.

Speaking of bugs, a combee would be good for our research. Most pokemon that change number of heads gain heads, but combee goes from three to one.

A Breloom, Ferrothorn, Skarmory, Camerupt, or Scizor would be a great addition, but our theme of "unusual traits concerning breeding" might cancel out Skarmory or Camerupt.

The three of you hustle along your way down Route 115, finding little trouble, and eventually you begin to see signs indication you are soon to approach Aulder City. Not long after, you see the skyline in the distance. While it doesn't sport the immense towering skyscraper you find in Unova or even the largest city in your home region, it is impressive in its own right. It is an even place, with its large buildings spread around, but it has all the bustle of the bigger cities.

You enter through an understated little gateway and into the city proper. Oliver immediately starts questioning a passerby for information on and directions to the gym. He calls your attention, shouts something you can't quite make out, and starts walking down a large avenue to your west. Mina walks up and asks the same passerby for the location of the pokemon center.

"We should probably tell him to heal his pokemon," she says with a giggle.

"I'm sure he'll figure it out," you say, grabbing Mina's hand

She smiles brightly and pulls you a little closer, she smells really good even though you don't think she's had a proper shower in a day. It's kind of like church incense, only subtler. The two of you chat about odd passerby and the sights of the city as you walk.

After a short trip, you arrive at the pokemon center and find it fairly crowded, unsurprising since there's little daylight left. You leave your pokemon with the nurse and take a seat, you should only have a half hour wait. You notice all sorts of trainers here, from schoolchildren up to aged veterans.

After about five minutes, Oliver bursts through the door and runs up to the attendant. He leaves his pokemon and stares pacing back and forth, going over data on his pokedex.

You walk over to the cosplayer, who is talking just a little too loudly and quickly at a teenage female trainer who seems so disinterested it almost makes you laugh. He has a T-shirt for some horrible pokemon anime you've heard of about a preposterously stupid kid trainer who never ages, and is wearing what look like Dragonite legs. He even has a little helmet to match.

He looks you up and down as you approach.

"Is that.. a... pokedex," he says reverently, practically drooling, "With a custom reader too? You must be a professor from the school, oh man you must have some rare pokemon. Show me now!"

You explain that they're with the clerk and he almost shrieks in frustration.

"After then, you have to," he begs.

"Uh, sure thing, buddy," you say and put on a big smile for the poor guy.

"Thanks you so much," he says, "Now show me the pokedex."

You go through the various functions of your pokedex, showing off the expansive database functions first. You then register a nearby Charmeleon to demonstrate the data capture functions, which offer data on specific pokemon and provide information from the archives in a concise manner. He's super excited by this, and begins scanning every monster in sight. As you go through the applications you have installed, the clerk calls your name and you retrieve your pokeballs.

You tell him about Deino, but decline to take her out for fear of what she may do. He's disappointed but only until you release Beldum. He starts screaming out comments on how cool it is in a spastic manner and poking at him until Beldum retreats behind your leg. Larvitar is met with a similar reaction, but when you pull out Dratini he freezes with a hypnotized expression on his face.

"My.. favorite," he says, and he throws himself to the floor, screaming, "Please god, any price, you have to let me have him! Take my slowpoke or even my shukle!"

You've just about had enough of this guy, but you remind yourself he's not all there.

"Sorry buddy, but that's my Dratini and I don't want to give him up," you explain patiently

He looks like he's about to pop, but he shakes himself out of it and says plainly, "Of course, who wouldn't want to hold on to Dratini."

Mina comes up to you and explains that Oliver just got his pokemon and dashed out. The cosplayer freezes and looks at his feet.

"We better go if we want to see him battle."

You mentally thank her for her intrusion and go to say goodbye to the strange boy. He mutters something and hands you a scrawled phone number on piece of paper.

"For when he evolves," the cosplayer says, " I'd love to see him."

She smiles at you and you take that in, unsure of what to say. Luckily the gym is right ahead, a rounded building with what looks like a huge stone jutting out of it and into the air. You enter the facility, and check in with the receptionist.

>>1916377

You tell the receptionist that you'll only be spectating today and Mina does the same. She directs you toward Oliver's challenge, which is currently in progress in the second arena. She explains that he's facing a Jr. Trainer named Diana, if he wins he'll be eligible to face Argyle whenever he pleases.

The two of you find your way to Oliver's match, its a plain arena with an overhead scoreboard showing the match's progress. You see it's a two on two match and both are on their first pokemon. His Dratini is out and preparing to launch a twister toward a Roggenrola, it seems to be paralyses and almost out of commision. The twister flies toward it, knocking it into the air where it's retrieved by Diana.

"Pretty good," she admits, "But that was just a warm up."

As she throws out a ball, Oliver takes the opportunity to recall Dratini and throw out a substitute. A fearsome looking rhyhorn roars from Diana's side, facing down Oliver's Klink. The two issue their commands and both pokemon lumber toward each other. Klink is just a bit faster and grinds its gears into the Rhydon in sequence, cutting into its carapace for massive damage. The Rhydon has just barely enough in it to stay standing, and Diana recalls it. Oliver's name flashes on the board and he jumps down to congratulate his Klink.

He discusses things with Diana and then walks over toward you. You and Mina offer up your congratulations and he smiles.

"I barely took a hit, so I'm going up directly against Argyle next."

Diana leads your party to the main stage, where Argyle is waiting. He's an old man with thin white hair and a beard, a pointy jagged nose, and eyes shrouded by goggles. He's wearing a blue jumpsuit tucked into big engineer boots, and a big gray coat.

"Welcome to the Aulder City Pokemon Gym," he announces with a flourish, "I am Argyle, my rock pokemon will see how hard your pokemon are. Since you have no badges, It'll be a two on however many you've got. Let's do this"

He throws out a pokeball and Oliver does the same. An odd-looking Geodude comes out against Nidoran. In an instant, the trainers are shouting out commands and the pokemon start advancing. Nidoran flies out with a double kick that does a lot of damage, but Geodude responds by charging up electricity and bashing into it for a shock. Nidoran launches back at the Geodude at Oliver's command, only needing a single kick to eliminate her foe.

Argyle looks surprised by how quickly his pokemon was handled, but steels himself and throws out a Larvitar. You quickly register it to your pokedex for comparison's sake and turn back to the battle. Oliver keeps his Nidoran out and the two pokemon slam into each other, launching attack after attack. Larvitar handles the kicks well, but eventually falls to the ground spent. The battle is won.
>>
my boy nidoran got them hands
>>
>>1916464

Nidoran walks back over to Oliver and cries out happily. He pats her on the back and thanks her. She begins to shift a bit, and her skin seems to glow a bit. Her legs and lower body grow thicker, and she stands up. Her skull seems to shift slightly, and her snout protrudes exposing bigger teeth. Her spines all seem to extend, as does her tail. It appears she has evolved into a Nidorina. Oliver goes wild, jumping up and hugging her tightly.

Argyle walks up to Oliver laughing to himself.

"Man you really rocked me!"

He laughs harder at his own joke, and Oliver joins in. He reaches out and pins a badge to Oliver's shirt. It's an oval shaped, grey, and shiny. He also hands him a TM for Rock Polish.

"Never got to use it in the battle, but put it to good use."

You make your way back to the entrance way and plan your next move.

You decide to take care of some business first and foremost, since your low on funds. You find a curio shop in the shopping district and unload that nugget you got from Terry, earning a fair 5,000P. You now have 6,700 to spend while your here. The shop you're in has few interesting items, but you find a nice selection of incense and some charcoal. There are plenty of trainer shops around too, it's a big city with plenty of shopping.

Feel free to list of some stuff to buy or look for.

>>
>>1916533
We need to stock up on pokeballs since we are nearly out and buy some more potions/cures.

Quick question is what we can purchase limited according to how many gym badges we have or not?

Also look in one of the stores or some kind of institute there should be detailed report about the local wildlife. If we can get a copy or even a look we find out detailed information about the nearby pokemon and their situations. Perfect given our specialization. After getting a good idea of what the local area provides we can more easily and much more quickly go through it all for things of interest and stuff to take special note of. Including odd little discoveries like a small spring in a small cave.

Come to think of it there should also be a archeological equivalent for Mina. The good ones even report areas where a few broken pieces of historic items were found.
>>
>>1916537
>>1916527

After acquiring some funding and picking up a few essentials, you decide to take care of something even more important. Your party returns to the pokemon center to regroup. You take the opportunity to pull Oliver aside and have him get lost for the evening, to which he enthusiastically agrees, and also get some information from the locals on a decent restaurant.

You ask Mina if she'll go out with you for the evening and she almost knocks you to the ground with her enthusiastic affirmation. The two of you take the opportunity to clean up in the pokemon center facilities, which you note are of nice quality for a city, and you dress fairly well.

When you meet with Mina again you find her in a medium-long black dress that hugs her curves in a very flattering way. Her hair is down and she's wearing lipstick, it looks like she's gone all out. The two of you take a meandering route to the restaurant, enjoying each others company.

You walk around the city streets for a while after dinner and eventually come across a charming little bar. The two of you decide to sit, drink, and chat for a bit. You can't help but smirk as you catch jealous stares from some of the men around. She ends up a little tipsy after about an hour and you decide to start your somewhat long walk home.

By the time you're back, neither of you are feeling the alcohol much and find a spot to rest in one of the lounges toward the back.

>What do you do.

>>1916566

No, you aren't limited by gym badges. That's just kids.

There is definitely a research lab in a city this size, you reckon, but you're sure you could find a basic ecological survey of the area on your pokedex. And you're sure there's at least one museum, probably more,

You pull Mina in and hold her close on one of the plush couches in the lounge, there's practically no one around given the relatively late hour. As you cuddle together on the couch, you get to talking about your journey so for, and also as to what you plan for the future.

"It's kind of up to you really," you explain, "Since Oliver and I can do our work pretty much anywhere."

"Wow, so it's really my decision," She seems a little nervous at the thought of being in control, "Well I'm still waiting to here back from Professor Kavo, but I'd like to compare what we saw back east with some actual early Mercian ruins. That would involve going either to Zatuy or to Falia, but Zatuy has the largest."

She begins to go into detail about the specifics of the structures and symbolism, and then technical details which are starting to go over your head a bit. She shakes them off and turns her attention back to you.

The two of you just look at each other for a little while, her pale green eyes sparkle up at you and you pull her in for a kiss. There's no one in the room now, its past midnight, and the two of begin to grow more aggressive. As you work your hands along her ample chest, passion takes over.

Some time later, you creep into the male sleeping quarters and find an open bed, drifting off to sleep easily after a full day.

I'll support this. Let's go all out on specialty food and grooming tools for our guys. And in fact, for Nidorina as well, as a gift for Oliver. First badge and evolution, that's a momentous occasion.

Afterwards, hopefully some research centers and a museum if it's relevant to Mina's interests.

Bluh, I wish I could participate, but you run at 4AM for me.
>>

A grooming kit for us would probably need a soft cloth for Dratini, a long brush for Deino and something harder for the others: a hard brush or maybe even a metal sponge for Beldum.
I agree on the Balls and the Charcoal.
>>
>>1917678
Right, I forgot to mention that I also support getting more poke/great balls. In fact, 4 isn't even enogh for the normal ones, but let's see how much that other stuff costs first.

More importantly! We have an oval stone. Where is that girl with the Happiny? She really needs it. And Oliver's new Pokémon can evolve again with a moon stone, which we also have and don't need.

You awaken a bit later than you usually do to find the male bunks largely deserted, save a few stagglers, and lay back in bed for a few minutes. After a little relaxed appreciation of your current situation, you decide to hesitate no longer and get up to greet the day. After some basic hygeine and dressing, you walk out to find Oliver waiting for you.

"I just checked and Mina's getting ready," he says with a smirk, "I'm kind of surprised I'm up before you, but then again you had a late night."

He starts snickering to himself, and elbows you gently in the side. You just smile and nod your head. You go through the previous evening with your friend and just when you get to the ending, Mina walks up and you awkwardly change the subject over to Girafarig. She seems to know what's up, but doesn't say anything and simply greets you with a kiss.

You formulate a plan for the day ith your friends. Oliver has already taken care of his main business in the city, so he's glad to tag along wherever. Mina wants to make sure to hit a particular museum in the newer section of the city before you leave Aulder, but is otherwise open to anything.

First you go to the shopping district, purchasing a 4 pokeballs and 2 greatballs as well as a fairly versaitile pokeom grooming kit. This sets you back 1,500 P.

Deciding to visit the museum first, the three of you make your way out of the pokemon center and down the bustling city streets. You have a bit of a walk to the district, so you take the opportunity to address a few things with Oliver as you go.

"So, I was thinking it might be a good idea to breed our Dratini," you say, "I know someone who absolutely loves Dragonite and has some interesting trades."

"I wouldn't be opposed at all," he tells you, "But it would be a bit time consuming, something we ought to get started today. I don't want Dratini to miss out on too much training, and I doubt we could breed them on the road."

You confirm this is not possible, and Oliver continues, "In that case, we would need to send them off to Pine, or find a local breeder. My first choice is the professor, we'd get the benefits of his experience as well as the Erbaum equipment. There's a good chance it would take a while longer, but its worth it to me."

You ponder that for a moment and let the subject drop. After some more casual conversation, you go into your bad and pull out your moon stone.

"Here, its a gift for your first badge," you say, handing it to him, "First of many."

He looks genuinely touched and thanks you.

"I'll use it on Nidorina after she gets a little older," he tells you, looking at his prize with visible joy.

You reach the museum district and Mina takes the lead, marching your group into a stately building you identify as the Aulder Museum of Ancient History. Inside, you find a number of exhibits showing carvings and objects from various places and periods. Mina ignores most of these and walks toward the research area after flashing her trainer card, identifying herself as a juinior professor.

>>1918460

You decide it best to follow Mina, besides you figure there's no better source of information on these exhibits than the experts who study them. You and Oliver follow behind your teammate, showing your own cards and entering the laboratory.

There isn't much equipment, some big machines you don't recognize and a row of computers. What catches your eye is the central table around which several young researches stand, looking at what appears to be a massive stone coffin with intricate carvings of what seems to be a Zapdos along its sides.

Mina introduces herself and most of the researchers ignore her, but an older gentleman steps up and takes her around the facility.

"Don't mind them, it's a Mercian noble's tomb and the young fellows all want the first crack at it," he says with a light chuckle, "I'm Professor Wiepe and I head the research department here."

She introduces the you and Oliver, explaining your areas of expertise, and tells him about your recent discovery near route 115. He seems very interested in this, and the two of them discuss the implications of the finding.

"Well this turns a lot of what we know on its head," he explains, "If this is accurate, that means there could be a lot more hidden in the mountains. Who knows what kind of history this could uncover, much of the early Mercian society is quite mysterious."

He shoos away the younger professors from around the tomb, allowing Mina to take a closer look. She examines the carvings in detail for a while, making little observations to herself, before pulling out a research notebook. Wiepe observes her for a time.

"What are your findings?"

"Well, I'd date it to the middle era based on the Zapdos, but these carvings here," she gestures to them, "Indicate a later burial. I'd its from say a very old family and late Mercian."

"I think you may be right," he offers with an avuncular smile, "This is a Geoffian tomb, later than we've seen the family ever before, and suggesting..."

"They survived longer than we knew," she adds, "And still in a position of power."

The two of them go on like this for a while, and eventually she tells you she'll be a while longer and will meet you later. She suggests you and Oliver find something else to do, lest she bores you. Oliver is doing his best not to confirm her suggestion, but you know he's probably going crazy here.

You take your leave of Mina and the professor, who return to their discussion without hesitation. Oliver seems relieved and the two of you take a look around the museum district. There are buildings dedicated to various subjects ranging from art to the sciences. You find a natural history museum which seems interesting, and it has an attached pokemon lab that neither of you want to pass up.

You up to the receptionist, who directs you to the laboratory through a hallway adjacent to the main floor. Inside, you find several white-coated academics performing a variety of tasks. The larges machine you know to be a pokemon biological scanner, you also take note of a few instruments for collecting data on pokemon physiology. This place is nearly as well stocked as Erbaum, and there is one machine you have never seen before.

Some of the professors and assistants greet you in passing, some commenting on how nice it is to see the new blood and wishing you well. You wind up answering questions on your schooling for a while from an ambitions young research assistant named Karen a year or so your junior.

"I'm Professor Gum," He says, offering a handshake, "I'm a physiologist, specifically paleobiology. That's mostly what we do here, study fossils."

You ask him if you can use the machines to scan your pokemon for data. He lets you know of a few machines which are currently running experiments, but most of the equipment is fair game. You then ask him about the machine you've never seen.

"That is my most prized possession," he tells you, "Its a machine which can clone a pokemon and 'restore' it from a fossil."

He explains how it works, briefly going over the functions of its various instruments before going into detail. Essentially, it uses highly advanced scanning technology and exhausts the sample entirely as it collects any DNA. From there, a special kind of liquid, or 'ditto soup' as he calls it is, is injected with the sample. A cloned pokemon can be gestated this way in a matter of a few days, but it requires a mostly intact fossil.

This is truly fascinating stuff, but you turn your attention to the more immediate task at hand and the data collection instruments. The main biologic scanner is an older model than what you're used to, but you familiarize yourself quickly with it and Professor Gum is more than happy to help you along.

Dieno and Beldum nervous systems, and how they might use the same or different methods for their multiple brains on evolution.
>>
>>1918892
With Beldum, Deino and Klink, we need to focus on their neurological aspects. Especially before and after they evolve, for comparison.

Might as well do Larvitar too, on tge off-chance something weird is going on with Tyranitar's cgest that appears to have its previous form Pupitar's face on ot.

I'm even thinking we prevent our Pokémon from evolving outside of a controlled environment, and try to get them to evolve while their brains are being scanned, but I guess that's nigh-impossible.

Having a curiosity toward what you imagine to be a unique nervous system, you first pull Beldum from his ball. Gum is curious and takes a good look, saying he's never seen one close up before. You adjust the settings of the biologic scanner toward handing mechanical pokemon. Gum nods, then tweaks a nob slightly before starting up the machine. Beldum floats in at your request.

The data is nothing particularly groundbreaking, but its utterly facinating to see it yourself. Beldum, like many mechanical pokemon, has a series of circuits which work as a nerurological and cardiovascular system. The structure of its eyecase is the most interesting and contains the only 'organs' in the pokemon. It has a series of microscopic ports along the left lateral side you can only postulate have to do with its unique evolution.

The central processer coordinates and controls everything, this is Beldum's mind and contains all that makes him who he is. The eye functions as an eye of course, but also absorbs radiation from the sun to 'feed' Beldum. There is a series of small micronozzels on the bottom of his claw which seem to be where he feeds energy attacks through, you also find some in his eye.

Jotting down your findings, you retrieve Beldum and send out Deino. You prepare yourself for the worst by doing so in a broom closet, hoping to mitigate her destructive tendencies. She bumps you, but not in an overly forceful manner. She seems a little afraid at first, but you give her a few hard pats on the head and she calms down. She follows you into the machine, but bashes her head into the walls when you close the door.

Despite her moving around, you manage to get some good information. Her peripheral nervous system and neurons are similar to that of most human or animal-like pokemon, as are the general organs and structure of her body tissues, though her pain nerves don't seem to be anywhere near as numerous as average. They're also located deeper in her skin than normal. She also has typical energy ducts located in her mouth. There are a ton of them in there, more than the average for her species by a long shot.

Her brain is extremely interesting, or brains as you should say. There is a large brain in her chest cavity, close to and connecting with the spine, surrounded by a large bony cage. Inside her head, there is a mass of tissue composed of grey and white matter that seems to be a sort of micro-brain. You postulate that perhaps Hydreigon isn't truly polycephalic after all, they aren't exactly well studied.

Aw shit yeah, science!

Here's some stuff I'd like to do:
See if the Hard Stone, Nevermetlice and Charcoal affect Beldum's HP
Challenge the gym. I'd say we have a decent shot of it, especially with Beldum and Deino.
Just having 1 badge will command you some respect.
>>
>>1919078

You call back Deino after praising her for being well-behaved, then let out Larvitar. Gum is enthused, he tells Larvitar are well studied in the lab due to being an ancient species. He takes you and your pokemon through the ringer. Running and explaining a number of tests on the creature, whose head is starting to spin from all the attention. You enjoy having ample data at your hands with which to compare your own Larvitar, and also learn a lot about their growth patterns and species.

There's a lot of information based on studying Argyle's Tyranitar, of which he has several, and confirm that your own little pokemon has a lot of potential especially with attack power. You see that as they grow, the soil a Larvitar consumes is compacted by its body into the rocky carapace that acts as a sort of exoskelleton supporting the weaker endoskelleton. It will begin to become more jagged and thick until the creature undergoes evolution, wherein it eclipses the arms, legs, and head.

You learn that Pupitar, after a long period of relative dormancy, burst out into Tyranitar. The pupa then acts as torso armor until the natural growth cycle replaces it with a stronger exoskelleton. Color changes mark transitional periods, with Larvitar greying as they age and Pupitar converting back to the familiar green in a similar fashion. You download the laboratory's research into the species for later reference and call Oliver over.

He agrees on letting you analyse his Klink, and the little gear creature floats over into the machine. Scanning it reveals some similarities in general structure to Beldum, but with more two processors. It seems the Klink aren't linked in any physical fashon, other than magnetic attraction. You learn that as they grow, one gear will dominate the other and they will link more permanantly but retain seperate cognition.

You've gathered a lot of data, and you and Oliver discuss plans for the rest of the day.

You pull Beldum back out from his ball to test an idea you had. You have Beldum drop the twistedspoon and you hand him a piece of charcoal you purchased the previous day. It emanates an odd warmth as you hold it. When you hand it to him, he pulls it to his body with telekinetic force. The professor shows you to a small room for pokemon testing.

"Hidden power," you call out, directing his attack toward a target.

A ball of red energy launches out toward the target and a small flame flashes around it. You switch out the charcoal for the nevemelt ice you found in the forest. This time the energy is blue, and when you inspect the target you find it cold to the touch. The hard stone changes the blast to brown, and it just launches into the target as though it were a thrown rock.

>>1919199

You ask for any ecological maps they may have on the surrounding areas before leaving, and Professor Gum has you download the data onto your pokedex.

First you look at route 116, which connects Aulder and Den City. Most of the region has been given over to farming for many years, but north of the route are rough and rocky areas which contain a lot of ground pokemon and other hardy species. Sandshrew are common there, as are Mankey and Rhyhorn. You could also occasionally find some wild Tauros or Milktank, and even the rare Bouffalant. Further north and approaching the mountains, you begin to find more fighting types, like Scraggy and Machop. Rarely, younger Tyrogue can be found there as well.

>>1919238

The areas you breezed by in the rush to get to Aulder are now lain bare. There's a great deal of diversity here. Grass, flying, and bug types are common here and its easy enough to find a lake with some water types. Tailow, Caterpie, Seedot, Sewaddle, Tangela, Aipom, Foongus, and Pachirisu are common in the forests. Heracross, Teddiursa, Venipede, Shroomish, and Tropius are present as well. By the lakes, you can find Lotad, Poliwag, and Surskit most commonly with the occasional Yanma or Wimpod showing up

You decide to take some of your time out to train your pokemon, and you and Oliver take your leave from the lab. Professor Gum exchanges phone numbers with you, encouraging you to call if you ever need any help or find any fossils. You thank him for that, as well as all of his help and say farewell.

Back at the pokemon center, you and Oliver ask around for a good place to train, and are directed to a vacant lot not far from there use by the locals for that purpose. It's also the best place to find a battle if you aren't trying to face a rock type.

You remember that you wanted to talk to professor Pine about a place for your Snover, and also remember what Oliver said about wanting to breed your Dratini sooner rather than later. You could take care of either of those before or after training, if you were still so inclined.

You decide to head out to the training field with Oliver, wanting to get a bit of training in with Dratini before you send him off to Pine. You head out along the avenue and down a little side street, hearing the sounds of pokemon clashing and trainers shouting. The vacant lot is fairly large and well worn, there are a lot of trainers and even a few stands selling snacks and potions.

You and Oliver get set up in one of the few uncrowed areas, he releases his Dratini and you do the same. The pair of them are playful toward each other, and you let them play for a while while you and Oliver discuss them. It's no secret that Oliver's Dratini is a cut above yours, and you ask his advice. Rather than tell you, he has his own Dratini demonstate some of its manevers and moves toward yours. With the added assistance, your pokemon quickly picks up twister. It's combat discipline has also been vastly increased, as well as its general fitness and battle readiness.

After your collaborative training with Dratini has gone as far as you think it could go, Oliver splits of for some solo training while you retrieve your pokemon. You release Deino and she runs toward you, she smashes her head into your legs and snaps her jaws around you. You work through some basic exercises and find her much better behaved than the last time you attempted this. You have her follow basic commands for a time, then work on combat directions.

After spending a while working on the basics, you begin to incorporate moves. She picks up on this relatively quickly and you have no doubt she's combat ready now. Since she seems to be taking to it so well, you increase the speed of your commands. She doesn't fail to perform, so you keep increasing them further and further. She eventually reaches a limit, and you work there for a while.

You start working on adding moves, deciding to start with bite. You grab some some loose wood from one of the venders and throw them toward her, she snaps them in half without any dark aura. Remembering how well it worked for Dratini, you call out Larvitar for a demonstration and she gets it in no time. After a bit more practice together, Deino seems tired so you retrieve her.

Oliver is done with training his Dratini, she certainly has a lot of stamina, and he lets you know he's ready to send her out. The two of you walk back to the pokemon center and you take the opportunity to leave Deino with the attendent for a quick refresher while you get in touch with Professor Pine. You utilize the PC, which is offered for free, unlike the places which have a small fee.

You call him up and explain your plans, and ask him how long it'll take to breed your Dratini. He's glad to find a home for Snover if at all possible, and tells you he'll be comfortable at Erbaum in the interrum. In response to your question on the Dratini breeding, he offers one of his own.

"We could really use a stable breeding population at the academy," he explains, "if the two of you are willing, I'd like to keep your pokemon for a week or so to get a few spare eggs. I can guarantee you one egg in about two days either way."

You tell Oliver his plans, and he seems to be a bit unsure. After a bit of deliberation, he tells you he will yield to your judgment. He's eager to get back to training.

"Thanks so much, Alex. And you tell Oliver the same," he tells you, "I won't forget it either."

You fire up the transporter and set the location, sending over Snover first. The transmission read as successful and you and Oliver send over your Dratini. You receive a text message from Pine not long afterward saying that everyone was received without issue and they're doing just fine.

With that task taken care of, the two of you make your way back to the training field. Oliver confides in you that he's nervous not having his Dratini. You tell him you understand, but don't mention that you're not even sure if you want yours back.

The place has thinned out slightly by the time you return, but you still see plenty of trainers. There's even a ranger with a Tropius, and he's giving out fruit in exchange for battles. There are a few young trainers about as well, either engaged in battles or instructing their pokemon.

"Fire spin"

The Torchic is fast, and it rushes at Deino with great agility before jumping into the air and launching a thin flame from its mouth. The flame encircles Deino like an orange chain, wrapping around her body and trapping her. The initial attack seems to have only done a little damage, and Deino launches her attack as soon as she's hit.

Torchic touches down to the ground just as the attack launches out of it not too far away. A massive pillair of dirt and rock blasts up into the air and engulfs Torchic. The little bird is handling the attack surprisingly well despite a fairly direct hit, but definately felt its effects. The two square up against each other for another round. The chain of fire burns brightly into Deino, cutting at its health. You're a bit surprised by how tough the enemy is, until you see an everstone tucked under its wing.

"Fire spin"

"Bite"

The Torchic rushes forward at Deino and goes to leap up into the air again, ostensibly preparing another fire attack. It never gets the opportunity, as it mistimed its jump and is set to crash into your pokemon. Deino is ready and makes good use of the opportunity, charging up dark energy in its mouth. Torchic comes in and Deino snaps its jaws around its body for a perfectly timed and very damaging hit.

The little bird was severely injured by the last blow, and you doubt it has much left in it. Deino, by contrast is still pretty strong, even as the firey chains cut into it for more damage. Unless the now very anxious looking redhead gets very lucky, you doubt she has much of a chance left. Her Torchic looks very resolute, and scratches at the ground in a challenge toward Deino.

"Oh, no! Torchic, sand attack!"

The Torchic marches forward, but instead of kicking up any sand it blasts off an ember instead. The flare blasts forward toward your pokemon, singing some of her hairs and causing her to lose some of her momentum. She blasts of a spray of blue energy in a cone toward the little bird and its enough to stop it dead in its tracks. The bird grits on Deino before dropping to a knee, and out of the fight.

The lass retrieves her pokemon with tears in her eyes, but steels herself and walks up to congratulate you and Deino. You pat your rambunctious little creature roughly on her head and she reciprocates with a gentle snap at your sleeve. You hear a chime on your pokedex, and find you have earned 1200P for winning.

Her blonde friend walks up to her, "I guess that settles it Lana. You've got to drop the everstone and let Torchic evolve. There's no way you can beat Argyle with just Oddish."

You decide on a two on two battle with the standard bet. The blonde takes her position and faces off against you, she looking a lot more confidant than her friend. The redhead counts down and you choose a pokemon to send out.

"All right, let's go Larvitar," you call out, throwing your ball.

The green dinosaur pokemon jumps out from his ball and scans the battlefield. A flash of light pops out in the distance to reveal a Pikachu. The sour look on her face tells her she regrets her choice, but she replaces it with a determined one.

You think she's going for a switch, so you take the opportunity to grab an advantage. You call out for a sandstorm and your suspicion is confirmed as Pikachu disappears into into its ball. A big turtle pokemon pops out and you identify it as the grass pokemon Grotle. The sandstorm whips it as it gets its bearings, hurting it sligtly.

You take a page from her book, retrieving Larvitar and sending out Beldum. The mechanical pokemon bursts out from his ball, wearing the chunk of nevermeltice like a crown. He gets his by a few razor leaves as he enters, but only for a little damage.

Beldum regains his bearings as sand continues to twist around the battlefield. The Grotle is whipped by the cutting sandstorm as it moves around, losing health but still in fine shape. The two pokemon await command.

You cry out, "Hidden Power!"

The sands make it hard to see and hear, where the Grotle. Beldum charges its attack and waits for a moment. The only sound is that of winds whipping sand against the ground, when suddenly the Grotle bursts forth. Beldum releases its power right into the chest of the Grotle, and for a moment you think its about to faint from the critical hit.

It lumbers forward instead, charging its mouth up with dark energy. He throws all of his power into the blow, which is launched right at Beldum's eye. The force knocks him off balance and he is seriously injured as well. He's still standing. The sands keep snapping at the turtle, who collapses in a few seconds.

The lass sends out her Pikachu, who zips around the battlefield.

You call out for hidden power, and just afterwards a blast of electricity flashes and hits Beldum. He's looking very weak now, but charges up a ball of blueish energy and fires it at the electric rodent. It hits it right on the chest and it shivers as frost coats it. The pikachu is still running around but looks pretty tired, Beldum probably doesn't have much left in him

Honestly I'm thinking we should challenge the Gym. I reckon we could take it.

Is it possible to buy a Metal Coat in this town? Having Beldum know steel moves would help vs. the rock-type gym.
>>
>>1929306
Eh maybe next time. I'd like to continue our journey to the next town.
>>
Quick tip: if Larvitar's dad was high in level, Larvitar can use Outrage, since there are no move limits. He also definitely can use Assurance.
>>
>>1929349
We should check that out later, by showing him the move on the dex.

You think it's pretty likely she's going to call for another thundershock. You call back Beldum, then toss out Larvitar's ball. He bursts onto the battlefield to be hit with a blast of lightening, which he grounds out without any effort. The sandstorm seems to be petering out a bit, but there's still enough left over to damage Pikachu further.

There's a good chance you can win with the next blow if you get lucky, so you prepare your command.
