"...almost out of time."

As the words echo in cave, you examine the confusing scene before you, and suddenly you realize that the voice you just heard speak was your own.
You don't remember how you got here, where here is, who these people are, or even what your name is.
Your head is foggy, your lungs ache with acrid smoke, and there is a sharp pain in your left side.

You have no idea what is going on.

I'm testing the waters here.

You cannot tell who is what, actually.
None of the people appear to have any object aside from the old man’s glasses.
Everyone seems to be wearing the same kind of uniform grey smock.
They appear to be a young blonde girl, a curly haired woman holding her, a round man with a mustache, a large man with black muttonchops, a woman with rather long brown hair, an average looking guy, a young woman with short black hair, a short man with red hair, a blonde woman, an old man with glasses, a dirty blonde boy, and the wounded man.
Aside from the wounded man, they all seem like they could be roused if disturbed.

If I had to guess, from the looks of the shoulder pads or armor, We're from at least 3 different tribes or groups. On top of this and everyone's individualities, there was either tension or we felt that there would be tension. To ensure tensions wouldn't become violent, we disarmed everyone consensually or otherwise.
The time limit was either the device itself, or the shadowy figures outside. We're probably composed of so many different people because of the shadowy figures, and banded against a common enemy. Alternatively they came after we potentially started tensions or got knocked out as targets of opportunity.

Examining the debris, you reason that it had to have been a piece of really modern machinery, likely involving pressurized or combustible gas for it to have exploded upon impact of the stalactite.
You figure the device probably was hit by the fallen stalactite, then exploded. Severely injuring the wounded man and possibly injuring everyone else, knocking them unconscious and possibly giving them amnesia.

When sedating and abducting strangers against their will, it is a safe protocol to remove all their belongings as you can never predict what the objects they’re carrying will be able to do or how they will react when they wake up. I'm curious, is the quest's title not a generic title but instead a meta one? It's titled Quest without Subject in the thread, and Quest (without) Subject in the image.
In this case, it's a quest (without) [test] subjects? Seeing as how they all have amnesia and were supposedly abandoned by whatever institution imprisoned them? Alternatively being read as Quest Subject, or Quest [Test] Subject?

>Why we were doing these unethical practices
Your employers have found the greatest- no, the 2nd greatest discovery mankind has ever encountered.
In order to properly understand and utilize this discovery, they need to acquire dangerous resources.
You are tasked with obtaining these resources.
Your predecessors were sloppy and needlessly violent.
You pride yourself on being thorough, precise, and acquiring what is needed, the Subjects, without incident.
Until now.

As you are reeling from this revelatory memory, Muttonchops steps forward:
"Attention everyone, I have been watching you all very closely and there is something I feel you all deserve to know."

"I believe that our minds have been affected by more than just amnesia."

"That's not enough?" Mustache chimes in with a chuckle.

Ignoring the interruption, Muttonchops continues, "I have noticed that, aside from our nurse and the blonde miss, none of your lips match the words that you are speaking."

As he says this, and everyone mutters in response, you see that he is right, and that none of their lips are actually matching their words. You can't imagine how you missed it before or what this could mean...

Bump limit is 3 days or 750 posts. 250 image limit.
Not really, you've still got nearly 3 days worth of time on this thread. Feel free to once it's reached its bump limit, but threads can last up to 10 days around here.

Everyone reacts differently to this newest revelation that their words aren’t matching their lip movements:

The little blonde girl began fearfully asking what was going on while the curly haired Nurse tried to calm her down as her patient, the wounded guy has been bandaged as best possible.
The Mustache guy and the dirty blonde boy started watching each other ramble and marveled at how the sounds failed to match.
The long haired woman finally took an interest in the others, but still just sat near the cave entrance, staring at them pensively.
The average looking guy is asking questions to the large man with Muttonchops, who is responding with wise words but little new information.
The old man has returned to closely studying the orb on the pedestal by the entrance.
The black haired girl, while still holding her hand as if it's hurt, has backed to the wall and is glancing at everyone with a thoughtful expression.
The short red haired guy is fashioning a belt out of a strip of his smock, using the blood stained sharp piece of rock he found on the ground earlier.
The blonde woman is sitting beside him and staring into the fire.

And you stand observing.
None of them know that you’ve just remembered abducting them all for your employers as Subjects for… some reason you can’t quite recall.
They also don’t know that you’ve buried all the useful items under the firepit.
You’re no longer certain what you should do, but you still feel that time is running out.

>Remember the reason, gotta make sure we aren't a heartless bastard.
Your employers discovered what was, until very recently, the greatest discovery in mankind’s history:
The existence of parallel worlds and the ability to travel between them.
A number of the worlds they discovered were inhabited with people.
A number of those people had strange skills, abilities, and technology that could revolutionize your world, or destroy it.
Through careful trial and error in previous enterprises you were not briefed on, your employers found that passive observation can be subverted and that the safest way to learn the true capabilities of these other people was to test them after removing their ability to deceive.
The Subjects are found, retrieved, brought to a loading area, and then processed to the test site where their world’s true dangers, assets, and ultimate worth can be determined.

You have been abducting people to determine if they threaten your world or can benefit it.

Get Muttonchops to cut the rules lawyering mentality. We're supposed to be working as a team here.
Give him a more straight answer on how the promise is so that any memories or clues which could relate to any grudges or misgivings are dropped to prevent infighting. At least until the immediate dangers, the wounded man, the cause of the accident, are dealt with and everyone can safely return to their lives.
If we haven't already, make the same promise.

Once Muttonchops does so:

>And he's getting clues to his memories back, well then.
There is the sound of loud gasp, followed by the the exclamation, "Fascinating!".

While we can appreciate the curiosity and investigation, he should've at least informed someone what he was going to do and tried testing it from a safer distance with a stick or something first. For all we know, it could've been a shield or locking system for the cave against whatever's outside.

>>1942995
Then
>Share the location of our gear with everyone to ensure wounded man's and everyone's safety and health. We'll explain more details while they're working.
Assuming they don't kill each other by then.
>Share what you remembered with everyone anyway already
Specifically, try portraying ours in the more positive light of from what we remembered, we weren't going to get anyone harmed, and it was basically a secret recruitment program of which we would of certainly pulled anyone out had any serious danger come to them. We would've compensated them fairly and mostly let them live their normal lives under something like a NDA had they failed.

Aw shit, diplomancing is hard. Especially without any memories.

>The young woman with short black hair looks down at the hand she is holding, to the wounded man, and back to you, “No, I don’t trust any of you.”

Also, acknowledge black-haired girl's distrust of us, attributing to perhaps subconscious memories or instincts, and then avoid vilifying her on how she pretty much caused this entire mess which spiraled out of control. Maybe it was just a heat of the moment reaction and she didn't mean to potentially kill Wounded Guy, or something related to an earlier grudge.

"Hmmm? Yes. Well, the device is clearly raised at eye level to be viewed, emits no heat, and bears no obvious mechanism for activating it.
"Touching it seems to be the way to activate it, and if it had "unlocked" that doorway, I would have simply toggled it back.
"What I can't suss out is why it displays this one image, but does not change..."

You tell everyone that you recall burying gear under the firepit.
They all respond differently, and pretty much at the same time.
Little Girl – “Why would you do that? I don’t understand.”
Nurse – “Well, if you think there is some medical gear under there, we should dig it up.
Old Man – “Perhaps there is some sort of equipment that could help us answer some questions.”
Black Haired Girl – “Why are you the one remembering all this? And aren’t you the one who was awake when we were all sleepified?”
Long Haired Woman – “We don’t need gear to survive, but we might need fire. Do what you want.”
Mustache – “Do you think there’s food under there?”
Kid – “Are you… Do you think you’re the bad guy?”
Blondie – “Well, we should do something. We can’t stay here.”
Ginger Guy – “I knew there was something off about you. Taking everybody’s stuff is probably how you got stabbed.”
Average Guy – “I, uh, just want everyone to keep getting along. Like we said, right?”
Muttonchops – “I see now why you were so insistent. Very cautious. Good. We may yet survive this thing.

Yeah. We did this as a safety precaution. It might've gone poorly otherwise. We didn't predict it going this poorly anyways.

>Black Haired Girl – “Why are you the one remembering all this? And aren’t you the one who was awake when we were all sleepified?”
We were the first one to awake, then found the wounded guy, then woke everyone up. Everyone was awake earlier, from what we can tell.

We're just remembering the most because we bothered to. Muttonchops and Old Man showed promised for remembering.

>Kid – “Are you… Do you think you’re the bad guy?”

Working quickly, you all put out the fire, move the logs, and unbury 13 parcels wrapped in a water-proof brown cloth.
Unwrapping them, you find:
A musical horn made out of a ram’s horn
A high-tech First-Aid Satchel
What seems to be a Satellite Phone, but you can't understand how it works
A strange device with a glass jar attached
An old book with blank pages
A heavy green cloak
A heavy black case with a handle, that won't open.
A red ballcap
A set of keys
A small black leather jacket
A set of clothes including a T-shirt, jeans, boxers with cartoon elves, sock, sneakers
A book you can't read wrapped in a blue sweater.

And a pack of survival gear containing:
A large coil of light rope
A set of four knives
A compass
A hand weapon that appears to fire darts.
An odd water filter-pump and canteen full of water
A high strength light tarp mottled in green
A small cooking pot and a spoon
A lighter inside a box of matches
An entrenching tool
A tan towel
A small mirror
A large glass marble
A full compliment of survival ration bars.

The green box dissolves as you touch it.
In its place, a man stands before you in a drab, black suit. He has the expression of someone who needs more from you than they expect you want to give.
You’re used to seeing such expressions.
The man seems to be saying something, but it difficult to make out.
“…and the energy signal your men detected was my entry. I’ve come to learn about your people and society. But most of all, I need to learn the extent of your technology.”
“I think I remember this conversation.” you reply.
“No, my people seek only to trade with those we can confirm are friends.”
The man didn’t seem to understand you.
“That’s right, sir. An individual. We require a person of extraordinary worth as an example of the best your people can provide.”
You open your mouth to respond and hear your voice emerge without moving your lips.
“I’m certain our people can find you a worthy candidate. We often recruit-“

>Also say hello to the thing in the horizon and politely ask for help to kill Flattop

You are in a strange, alien landscape attacking the memory of the man who tried to abduct you and a terrifying thing looming Over the Horizon is reaching its deadly claws towards you...

This sounds like an excellent networking challenge.
Stepping forward and striking the flat top agent in front of you, your powerful fist slammed into his jaw and his whole body begins to break up slightly like cotton candy in the rain, yet you feel nothing at all.
Turning your head to the behemoth, you exclaim, "Greetings friend!", using your most charming voice to the black being on the horizon.
The shifting mass of darkness freezes and gives you a puzzled look.

"Would you mind giving me a hand with this fellow? You seem like a capable one and I think working together we can sort this troublemaker out in short order. What do you say?"

After a brief pause, a nervous, hesitant voice booms from everywhere at once.
"Do... do you think I could? I'm really not supposed to. I'm not supposed to be able to talk, even. I'm just supposed to, you know, grow and spread and claw and, you know, kill you. You think I can get him? Um... O-okay! Mind the hemorrhage!"

A fist of claws like a Hovertrain made of twisting tar and smoke flies toward you and the agent.
