You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Well, you still weren't sure of the exact details of what your job in a TSU would entail, but you couldn't really imagine any of it to be good. Maybe that was why you had eventually agreed to get drinks with your newly assigned wingmate, Lara.

"Ooooh, special forces, huh?" Lara grins as two of you take a seat at the Gladius' bar.

You could see that it was well adorned with all sorts of pilot memorabilia and knickknacks. Pictures, toy valkyries, and signed posters of various galactic idols and celebrities. It certainly did feel more homely than the cold, sterile appearance of the rest of the ship.

"That's right." You nod. "And you?"

"Guess you could say I'm a bit of a local around here!" Lara grins with unrestrained pride. "My family came out to this sector with the original colonization fleet!"

"Really now?" You nod. Obviously, with the advent of space travel, as well as the near extinction of the human race at the hands of a hostile Zentradi fleet, the UN and the subsequent New UN pushed hard for colonization in the last 50 years both to expand humanity's reach in the stars as well as hedge humanity's survival against a similarly destructive event.

"Yep!" Lara nods in confirmation. "How about you? Where'd you hail from?"

Xenobiologists have theorized on the functions of the perhensile appendage found on Windermerean heads known as a Rune.

It serves many functions in the daily life of Windermerean society and is also considered to be an erogenous zone.

It is possible that vigorous application of headpats to a Windermerean may result in an experience similar to that of multiple orgasms, hence it is not advisable to perform that action with Windermerans one is not socially close to.

"I was born and raised on Earth." You shrug. "Nothing too special."

"Dang, must've been rough." Lara frowns. "My grandparents used to say they were glad to leave Earth because it was in a real bad place."

"Don't worry, I was born well after the biosphere had been largely repaired." You say simply as you sip at your beer. "The UN at that point had thirty years and a lot of fancy Zentradi tech to pull it back from the brink."

"Awww, that means you must've seen the SDF-1 for real, right?" Lara leans in, eyes flashing. "I've always seen it in pictures and shows, but never in person!"

"Yeah, every Valkyrie pilot in Sol goes through there at some point in their training." You nod. "And trust me, it's as big as the vids make it out to be. Of course, the newer SDFs are way larger nowadays."

"Still, it's THE original!" Lara chuckles. "Can't believe it's still working after all these years."

"Yeah." You nod. "So you said your family left Earth?"

"Yep!" Lara nods again, still energetic. "Guess at some point during the journey, one of my relatives hooked up with a Zentradi or something. Turns out I'm like, a quarter Zentradi or something."

"Is that so?" You nod casually.

"Yeah! Not enough to let me grow big or anything, but it's still there!" Lara motions to her blue hair. "Guessing that's where this comes from."

That was true. Zentradi and other Protoculture descended races tended to have rather... exotic hair colors.

"So how about you?" Lara grins leaning in even closer to you as her questions become more personal. "You got any special bloodline or anything?"

"Purebred human." You shrug. "Sorry if that sounds a bit dull."

"Nah, it's totally natural!" Lara grins as she slaps you on the shoulder. "Besides, most of the guys here and in the fleet are human as well. Most Zentradi don't like the idea of fighting their own brothers, ya know?"

"I though Zentradi fought each other all the time." You point out. "It's the only reason why they haven't completely swarmed all over the galaxy."

"Uncultured Zentradi, yeah." Lara nods. "The ones that assimilated with us? Not so much."

"I guess you have a point." You nod.

"Hmmmm, it's starting to get kinda late." Lara checks her watch. "How about one more round and we call it quits?"

"Sure." You nod as Lara waves at the bartender for a fresh order.

"Anyways, anything about our fine fleet you wanna know in particular?" Lara turns back to you as the bartender gets the extra drinks ready. "I've got all the juicy gossip, ya know!"

"So what exactly is Amy's problem?" You frown as you take your new drink from the bartender.

"Oh, Amy?" Lara sighs. "Look, I'm just gonna say this up front. She ain't a bad kid, okay?"

"The fact that she tried to steal a Valkyrie and then promised to rip my spine out and skullfuck me indicates otherwise." You point out.

"Nah, she's never do anything like that. She's pretty harmless!" Lara laughs. "Kinda like one of those tiny dogs that can bark real loud but not much else."

"Oh, I can handle myself fine. It's just the attitude I'm worried about." You shake your head as you drink your beer. "If we're gonna be her bodyguards it'd be nice if she was cooperative."

"Mmmmm, how should I put this..." Lara pauses as she tries to find the right words. "Amy kinda fell into the wrong circumstances, or more accurately, had her circumstances decided for her."

"That's pretty cryptic." You raise an eyebrow.

"I don't feel too comfortable talking about this sort of stuff when she ain't around." Lara shakes her head. "My advice is you talk to her yourself when you get the chance. It'll probably make more sense, then."

"I'll keep that in mind." You nod, still not quite sure what Lara was getting at.

"Anyways, last drink of the night!" Lara grins as she slams down a shot full of whiskey. "You up for it?"

After your round with Dorothea, you're not sure if you have any left in you...

You both down your shots and slam them down on the counter at the same time.

"Hey, not bad." Lara laughs. "Looks like you'll be a squad lead worth following!"

"Wait, squad lead?" You blink.

"Well yeah, someone's gotta take charge of the unit." Lara shrugs. "I ain't got enough 'command experience', so the Admiral picked you for the job!"

"Really now..." You frown.

"She probably didn't mention it to ya since it's not official yet, so, congrats, Captain!"

You? A captain? That was... pretty interesting.

"Anyways, I'm gonna turn in for the night. I'll be seeing ya around, Cap!" Lara smiles as she gets up and and salutes.

You decide to take walk around the ship to work some of this extra alcohol out of your system. You never did like going to sleep tipsy or drunk. It just made you feel like shit in the morning.

At this hour, the halls of the Gladius were practically empty, lit by a dull red hue to signify the ship's time cycle. Still, you stumble through the pristine halls, occasionally looking out the viewports to see the rainbow cacophony of of fold space, that mysterious dimension that allowed humans to travel intergalactic distances in record time.

However, a combination of your distraction, dulled senses, and low lighting cause you to bump into-

You bump into a young, white haired woman who was sharply dressed in a business suit complete with a business skirt and black stockings and heels. However, she doesn't stumble or fall, able to steady herself with suspiciously quick reflexes and sense of balance.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, I wasn't looking where I was going-" You quickly apologize.

"Ah, that's no problem, Captain Neumann." The woman smiles, her eyes flashing with ambition. In the dim lighting, you couldn't tell whether those piercing irises were red or purple. Perhaps a mix of both? "Fancy running into you just now!"

You narrow your eyes. The way she was dressed and carried herself. You've seen and dealt with her kind before.

"What does Intelligence want with me?" You grimace.

"Ahhh, you're just as sharp as they say!" The woman chuckles and hold her hand out. You reluctantly shake it. "Karla Weiss at your service!"

"I wasn't aware I needed a handler." You cross your arms.

"Oh, you don't, but a certain idol of ours does!" Karla winks. "You could just say I'm her agent, or... producer! Yeah, that has a much more professional ring to it, doesn't it?"

"I suppose." Reply simply. Still unsure how to act in front of this spook. Was she really telling the truth? Or was she testing you in some way?

"Oh, I know that look, and it hurts my feelings so!" Karla sighs in mock sorrow."We're all on the same team, aren't we?"

"Forgive me if I don't take your word at face value." You frown. "I know very well how often Intel's priorities diverge from everybody else's."

"True enough, true enough." Karla nods, her smile unwavering. However, you don't get the same feeling camaraderie Lara's smile evokes, or the warmth when Dorothea's stoic mask breaks. No, everything about this woman was cold and calculating. All purpose. "I hope that means we can still work together!"

"I suppose there's not much other choice, is there?" You remark.

"I suppose not!" Karla winks and starts to walk off. "Until next time!"

You watch warily as Karla walks off to where she was headed. Only when she was completely out of sight did you feel safe moving at all.

You quickly decide that you have had enough for the night and head back to your quarters. After a quick shower and change of clothes, you drop onto your bed. Your gaze falls over to a clock that had been conveniently provided. You reach over and start to program the alarm. You didn't really have any set time to get up, so you figured you had some leeway in that regard.

You decide to get up nice and early. After all, it was best to maintain good habits after you've set them up. Couldn't afford to slack off, after all.

You get out of bed at the behest of your whining alarm, which you shut off. The hour was still pretty early, but not obscenely so. Looking at the time again, there was still a bit of time before the Gladius would defold and arrive at your destination.

You also realize just how stiff you feel.

You decide to make a quick stop to whatever this ship called a gym for a quick workout. You should at least get the blood flowing through your muscles again.

The gym was a simple enough affair when you finally find it. There were rows of various weightlifting machines, as well as treadmills and other cardio equipment. On the walls where various TV screens streaming all sorts of programs from galactic news to idol concerts.

You note that this gym even had a boxing ring in the back, which was a bit surprising. And it was in use.

And it was none other than Amy, the foul mouthed idol you were assigned to protect. She was stripped down to simple workout clothes, her hands encapsulated in a pair of boxing gloves. Her opponent was a simple boxing drone, designed to move around and vaguely resemble a human opponent.

And the girl was just absolutely WAILING into it, punch after punch with a meaty WHACK WHACK WHACK with each strike.

You had to admit, the girl certainly did have a lot of strength, or at lot of pent up energy at the very least. However, the streams of sweat dripping down from her face and hair was an indicator that she was overexerting herself. The typical signs of a brawler, not a fighter.

You look around. Doesn't look like anybody else was present. Probably wasn't a good hour for everybody else.

Well, you suppose you could give the kid some pointers. It kind of pained you seeing her waste her energy on pointless moves like that. You walk up to the boxing ring and lean on the edge.

"Hey, Kid." You say casually. "Word of advice, don't throw all your body weight into each hit like that. You're using up too much extra energy and you're overextending yourself, which leaves you open to a counterattack."

"Hey, who said-" Amy turns and then sees you. She freezes for a moment in shock. "YOU."

"Yes, it's me." You grin. "Captain Harry Neumann. Your new babysitter, apparently."

"I don't need a babysitter." Amy fumes.

"I'm just doing what I'm told." You shrug.

"Yeah, well, I used to that once upon a time and look where it's gotten me." Amy scowls as she aims another punch at the drone. This time you note she holds back a bit like you advised.

"Care to talk about it?" You ask, remembering Lara's advice about her.

"Get in the ring and maybe I'll think about it." Amy grunts, tossing you an extra pair of boxing gloves.

You decide to accept Amy's challenge, taking up the gloves and climbing into the ring.

"Just as a word of warning, do you really want to trade blows with a man who can break cockpit canopies with his bare hands?" You ask her.

"A once in a lifetime fluke, I'm pretty sure." Amy grunts, putting herself into a ready position. "Plus I need to blow of some steam and this seems like a good opportunity."

Well, you had to admit this girl was pretty ballsy, if nothing else. You put the gloves on and put yourself in a ready position as well.

And as expected, Amy makes the first move, blitzing forward in a surprising burst of speed.

You decide that it's best to show her just how large the gulf between you and her in terms of combat ability was. As Amy surges forward, despite her speed, her punch was so telegraphed that she may as well have been moving like molasses. You easily sidestep the punch, grab her wrist with one hand and pull her forward. You raise your other arm your elbow hits her directly in her solar plexus, winding her and forcing her to bend over. You take advantage by leveraging her arm to force her to drop face down onto the ground and you use your knee to pin her down in place.

And the whole thing barely took three seconds.

Simple, clean, and efficient.

"Neumann."

Your heart stops when you hear Dorothea's stern voice behind you. You turn your head to see your Admiral, arms crossed and dark look on her face.

"Mind telling me why you're assaulting our idol?" She asks, a single raised eyebrow giving away her annoyance.

"It was just a sparring match, ma'am." You try to explain. "Isn't that right, Amy?"

No answer.

Shit, did you actually knock her out? You did sort of go all out-

However, the moment you take your knee off her back, Amy flips around, grabs the collar of your shirt and bashes her forehead against yours with a loud CRACK. Your vision explodes into stars and color. Luckily, you were both wearing head protectors, so you knew your skulls weren't actually cracked open. But still, it hurt like hell.

Amy then drops onto her back, panting heavily but with a satisfied look on her face.

Dorothea, meanwhile, was standing completely still. Probably trying not to show any sign of surprise or shock.

"Hah, managed to get a hit in..." Amy coughs and smiles.

"That was a pretty dirty move, Kid. I'm impressed." You grin as you help Amy back up to her feet. "We'll make a proper fighter out of you, yet."

"So you'll really teach me those moves?" Amy's eyes widens.

"I don't see why not." You shrug.

"Ah, just a sparring match, I see." Dorothea sighs in relief. "I was afraid it was something a bit more... sinister."

"Sorry if that gave you a heart attack, ma'am." You apologize. "Wasn't expecting anybody else to be watching."

"Yes, well..." Dorothea straightens back up and regains her composure. "I suppose this means the both of you should report to the infirmary and get yourselves checked out. We just defolded and will be rendezvousing with the main fleet shortly."

"Yes, Admiral." Amy rolls her eyes.

Dorothea shakes her head but otherwise does not chew Amy out on her obvious disrespect. This was probably a common thing between them, you assume.

"Yes ma'am." You nod as you take Amy's hand and start dragging her off.

As the two of you head for the infirmary, you pass by a viewport and see that the rainbow kaleidoscope of fold space was replaced with the conventional starry void of ordinary space. In the distance, you could see a cloud of glittering lights, no doubt the main fleet your ship was moving to link up with.

"Hey, whats-your-name." Amy nudges you with her elbow.

"Harry." You tell her. "Harry Neumann."

"Well, Harry, I suppose I got an end of a deal to keep up with." Amy grumbles.

"That's right." You nod.

"Yeah, well..." Amy sighs, her fingers trailing along the wall as she walks. "What would you say if i told you that I never really thought about becoming an idol in the first place?"

"Then I'd wonder why you're working as an idol for NUNS." You respond.

"And what if I told you that this was the career path NUNS decided for me?" Amy continues.

"If that's the case, why stick with NUNS?" You wonder. "You could leave the military if you don't like it. Hell, maybe even join a PMC."

"Yeah, and they'll just do the same thing and shoehorn into an idol group." Amy rolls her eyes. "It's what they do for those girls who've got 'high fold resonance' or whatever the fuck they call it."

"That still doesn't answer the question of why you're still here." You point out.

"Yeah, well... let's just say sticking with NUNS is still my best shot at being a Monster pilot." Amy grumbles.

"A Konig Monster?" You blink. That was a heavy support destroid, a mech vehicle that some engineers decided to stick four gigantic battleship-grade cannons and six heavy missile launchers. Enough firepower to knock out entire battlefleets on its own.

"Yeah!" Amy nods, a genuine smile on her face this time. "I just love it's size and all that firepower its packing! Completely fucking unstoppable!"

You think you were starting to get a better handle on Amy's personality now.

"I mean, you're a pilot, so you should understand, right?" Amy turns to you. "What if some houghty poughty officer just came along and told you that you weren't allowed to fly anymore because he knew 'what's best for you?'"

"I'd find a way to work around it." You shrug. "There are ways."

"Don't worry, Kid. I'm sure you'll get your chance." You put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Maybe if you behave long enough, Command might change it's mind about you."

"Wanna make a bet on that?" Amy laughs lightly.

"Just stick with it. You won't get any chances if you keep being insubordinate." You suggest.

"Jeez, you're starting to sound like the Admiral now." Amy rolls her eyes.

By this point, the two of you reach the infirmary, where the doctor on duty gives you both a ice pack to control the swelling in your heads. Other than that, there were no serious injuries for the both of you.

"Anyways, um, thanks for the advice, I guess." Amy mumbles. "I'll see you at the briefing later, then."

Macross Plus still looks incredibly good today as well.

True, and Plus IS my favorite entry in the franchise as a whole.
But DYRL is just crazy fucking gorgeous.

Wasn't it that the outfits/designs in DYRL were canon, but the story was a dramatization because in setting it was a movie based on the first space war?

Still, that doesn't mean humans can't be Macronized. If I remember right, there's a Macronized Human in Dynamite 7.
