/qst/ - Quests

The Hall was a lot more bustling than you had expected.

You had been in the queue for the better part of an hour. You’d specifically taken the earliest transport from the inn here to avoid going shoulder to shoulder with your fellow graduates, but considering just how many people were in front of you by the time you’d arrived, you were hardly the only one to have had that idea for a while. Grunting, you take another step forward, hoisting your belongings as you move with the line. There were only a few more people in front of you; just a little more and you’d be registered and on your way, just like everyone else here.

A roar catches your attention as you turn your head up to the large gap, watching a particularly large Digimon land onto the floor, several other Hunters scrambling out of the way as it landed with a rumble, its Hunter jumping down from their place on its horn, hauling what appeared to be a lengthy Spear over their shoulder. Several of the Tower Guard Officers rush up from their posts, the Head Officer, a pale pasty-faced man, walks up to the Hunter, his armor loudly clanking as the Hunter set their bag down. If his expression was anything to go by, he didn’t look the least bit pleased by their grandiose entrance one bit, even from here.

‘Hey, man, counter’s free.’

You’re shaken from your reverie with a light tap upon your shoulder and an impatient voice. Giving a light apology, you pick up your bags, heading towards the only free counter of the few that were present. For such a wealthy network, you would have thought that they could at least afford to install a better setup than just six counters to handle the crop of Hunters and Clans.

Walking up the small steps up to the free counter, you crane your neck over the too-tall-for-humans counter top to talk to the Leomon manning it, his digits scribbling over a piece of parchment as he mumbled over and over to himself, not quite noticing that he had another patron on his step.

‘Excuse me?’

He sets down his quill, narrowing his eyes and craning his head over the counter with a scrutinizing gaze, his feline lips pursing as he regarded you. You stiffen slightly—while you didn’t feel like you were in any sort of trouble, the Leomon over the counter was still intimidating, especially coupled with those bulging, furry biceps and the fact that he stood at least a good two feet taller than you could ever hope to be.

‘You look a little out of our usual hunter bracket,’ he begins a little gruffly. ‘Though, never easy to tell with humans.’

You scowl, taking out your documents from your rucksack.

‘I took my time, covered all my bases,’ you pause, taking out your forms and handing them over. ‘Can’t get too careful in this business, can you?’

The Leomon laughs.

‘Well, you look like you’ve done the time, at least,’ he huffs, seemingly satisfied as he picks up the forms from the counter. ‘Not a lot of people looking to get into the business of Wild Hunting prepare themselves know how much can go wrong with a job … especially at the high level hunts. Good to know you took your time getting into this.’

He frowns as he gets to your second sheet.

‘You’re going to have a hard time getting groups if you’re ever going to get on independent contracts at your age, though,’ he takes a reluctant tone as he picks up the quill, coughing as he goes over the sheet again. ‘A lot of independent hunting groups at the low and mid end tend to have certain expectations … you might find a little bit of prejudice getting groups at your age.’

‘You’re making me sound like I’m a retiree.’

He barks in laughter.

‘No, no, it’s nothing like that,’ he takes an apologetic tone. ‘Young man, it’s just that at your age you’re kind of expected to have a few Sanctioned Hunts under your belt already, regardless of reputation. Plus, Hunters have a disdain of people transitioning into the career of a Wild Hunter. A lot of them think that it takes the gravity off the importance of their roles in Digimon and Human society—that it’s a … a side-job, you say, or that it’s a—as you Humans phrase it—a fallback.’

You sigh. Maybe you should have left it early.

‘On the other hand, as someone who tends to hunt independently on contracts, you could have a lot more freedom on your operations, should you choose it. Some pathways may open to you as an independent Hunter. You might even raise through the ranks of your Clan faster taking credit for yourself!

At his chuckle, you grimace.

‘That’s … nice to know.’

‘So, anything you tried to do or did before telling yourself you had a shot at making a career as a Wild Hunter?’

You hum to yourself, remembering the days past…

....excuse me? Is it wrong to focus on the narrative side?
>>
>>1940072
Because I spent the last week working on a stat sheet and point rates and rules and the least a player could do is read through them and ask questions pertaining to gameplay. Now that I know that this is the audience, I feel no need to waste my time for people who don't want to bother anyway. I don't get anything out of it as the GM/DM, so why would I want to continue this? Thank you and good night; to the Shipgirl Commander people, I'll continue tomorrow or something,
>>
>>1940080
Yes, and I'll read through them as they are relevant, ie. AFTER char gen.

Spending time optimizing a character purely through mechanics just cripples your ability to make a living human being. Whatever the end result, we'll roll with it, whether it involves rifles or jewing people out of money or whatnot.

>Not reading game rules before a session
Now I really don't want to run this anymore.
>>
>>1940102
First of all, you're spazzing out over 1 guy, you know this right?

Second of all, if you really want relevant """gameplay""" questions, then the questions I would ask are nowhere in your doc.

How is combat structured? How many actions do we vote to take in a round, and what depth of tactics can we employ?

Comparing that with maxHP/damage is what will give a ballpark estimate of how long a given fight takes, and what kind of flow the Quest will have based on that.

So what's wrong with waiting for the first fight, when a lot of QMs have trouble explaining the format they use anyway?
>>
>>1940118
So just took a quick look at this and while I think the QM definitely quit too early, doesn't mean you're in the right either. You should at least read the rules to a game you're about to play, especially when the choices you're just randomly making will actually effect how the character plays. It's pretty in depth in terms of stats and it's only 3 pages, that's not hard.
>>
>>1940190
and I did read it. 3 types of damage, no clear indication of melee vs ranged, and a lot of unique tags that each would require their own explanation and bog down the quest.

A functional template would make any/most char gen choices viable, and we didn't even get to the second choice where things COULD get suboptimal.

I don't need to immediately know how trapping works. He shoots, he stabs, and he's an outsider, what's not to get?

>>
>>1940118

These seem like things that should be in a skirmish instead if he wanted questers to follow them. Otherwise it'll seem like something that unnecessarily bogs it down.
>>
>>1940254
You wanna take over or chastise be my guest, I'm just trying to get my kicks trying to run a DnD-esque campaign with a side of story. I actually put effort into writing this campaign and went over it for weeks just to try and give a good time and you expect me, as a GM, to be okay with a sitter (That's a player for you non TTers) to expect me to have any more interest in conducting it when his first words are:

"I don't want to bother"?

>Frontloading your quest with a bunch of mechanics instead of introducing them gradually as they become relevant.
Again, look to the "campaign" part. I'm running this as a "Campaign". There's less of a focus on story and more of one on gameplay, hence the work.

>Interrupting your chargen to chastise your potential players about your mechanics
I didn't chastise him for my mechanics. I chastised him and quit because he said he didn't care. If this is the base that I'm building on, why would I as a GM/QM/DM deem it fit to bother further? If he had something bad to say about the mechanics, I wouldn't have minded. None of them clicked, none of them cared or bothered and thus, we return to: Why should I?

>Having hitpoints in a goddamn quest
>Having chargen
I don't know what kind of social life you lead, but I honestly hope if you have the same chance here, when someone writes up a session on a table in a basement with some beers and a hope that people enjoy themselves and appreciate the effort that you tell them "Oh God, you actually put effort into this? LOL why do you want to put effort you loser". I honestly hope you never run a Pathfinder. It'd probably be over in 2 hours.

Also, next time you run a tabletop campaign and have a session, I hope someone kicks their feet up onto the counter and tells you they don't care. That's not the kind of players I want. I'd be happy with 1, 2 dedicated folk over 500 kickers. It's why I'm fine with Shipgirl Commander, VN-based as it is, having a small audience. I'm not writing. I'm running.

At least I know what you guys want around here. Detached, uncaring approaches and just the hits on the counter instead of dedicated, actual players that want to immerse. Piss off on that, by the way.
>>

>I spent the last week
>>1940298
>went over it for weeks
You spent this much time on it, only to drop it as soon as ONE person wants to skip the char gen phase? There is this concept in tabletop, it's called "pre-generated characters", surely it's something you should be aware of, after claiming to be such an expert on TT games.

You never even claimed that this would be a mechanics-focused quest until now. In nowhere does the term Campaign turn up until this post, and now you're berating people for not being aware this is a DnD-esque "campaign"?

And last I checked, shipgirls started with a personality check, and the first dice check involved asking someone out for a drink, if you even wanted to roll. Not exactly mechanics-driven. They seemed immersed enough in your narrative and waifus, not so much your numbers.
>>
>>1940298
>I actually put effort into writing this campaign and went over it for weeks just to try and give a good time

And you pissed it all away because ONE person said he didn't read the mechanics yet cause he wasn't sure if he was going to invest his time yet. Shows how much you really cared about this huh?

Lets say I was a player (that's sitter for you autists) at a tabletop game and I wanted roleplay as a Barbarian based on the setting you've provided. You stop me to ask if I read the mechanics behind it the class yet. I say 'Not yet, but I know I want to play a barbarian in this. I'll figure out the rest later' and you just flip the table and start crying about me not caring the mechanics you would be a terrible DM.

And that's what you are. A terrible DM/QM or whatever you call the OP of this trash.

And you think that it's for your enjoyment alone? I'd you didn't like it in the first place, I'm fine with it. My problem here is that you expect me to service an audience who doesn't care anyway. A guy walks in saying he doesn't care and the bunch of you encourage him to not care? What GM on this planet would keep running for a bunch like that? If you think the mechanics are off or the battle system or properties are junk, hey, we can talk. Because you cared enough. But you literally drop in, tell me you don't care enough to even open the campaign setting and expect ME to give a shit? Who the Hell do you think you are? Piss off. The sitters literally dropped in and said they don't give a shit but want to play anyway? Who would? What is this, the "cool kid" club? The "let's see how detached and uninvolved I can be to let the dudes know I'm hip and with it like all the cool guys are" club?

I'm not writing a book. I'm writing a playing session for the benefit of players present and you expect me to care right back for a sitter that said he doesn't in the first place? Who the Hell do you think you are to have that sort of arrogance to demand me to go above and fucking beyond. As a GM, I can take criticism. As players, you guys however, can't. You guys roll through this like you're reading a book instead of knowing there's a fucker at the other end who's dictating and trying to make things work. You want me to get behind that? You wanna criticize the mechanics, hey, no issue. You expect me to tolerate someone who dropped in and suddenly say he doesn't care anyway and you lot that get behind him saying it's cool for someone to do that sort of thing? Yeah, no dice. Piss off, the lot of you. It doesn't make you "cool" it makes me just not want to give a shit because you don't either.

Anyways
>But you literally drop in, tell me you don't care enough to even open the campaign setting and expect ME to give a shit?

You aren't giving anyone a chance to get invested or care about your setting you entitled cunt. You don't fucking get players who are 100% on board with whatever shit you are shoveling right off the bat. Specially for an untested QM (Yes, running a garbage shipsluts quest still makes you untested in a lot of people's eyes). You have to earn that loyalty. Instead you pulled the rug out from your entire campaign cause ONE (1) singular person said he didn't bother reading the mechanics yet. Which fucked over all the other players that DID read the mechanics and were onboard a bit more.

What the hell is wrong with you?

>Being this retarded

Yeah man I don't think this is the board for you. Whilst games here are similar to DnD and Pathfinder it isn't a 1-1 thing. They aren't the same and don't work exactly the same. Massive char-gen rarely works, hit-points... generally don't, and spazzing because one player didn't read you apparently mandatory google doc? Please, don't act soo entitled. Just because you spent time on it, does not mean people have to read it or give a shit. Introduce your rules in a more immersive and flowing way next time as they're needed (but feel free to link the doc at the beginning for those who're interested in jumping into the crunch)

>>1939100

That autist draws himself up pictures, makes a youtube video for a boring story with zero interest for people having any meaningful impact on crafting it and it moves at a pace so slow a sloth would get bored waiting for the story to actually go anywhere. Who gives a fuck?

Why can't someone pair up people with fighting animals with guns and make it fun?
>>
Someone needs to fucking nuke this board
>>
>>1943214
No. I had a problem against Lurkers. Most of my issues are against people lambasting me for wanting to punish non-participation. Most of my raging was against the people trying to DEFEND lurking - and most of these dicks, and probably you, among them - saying I was a shitter for putting penalties for rolls to discourage people from lurking and the obvious motherfuckers in the early thread who WANTED TO TAKE THE QUEST OFF-BASE, OFF THE SETTING and CRASH AND BURN IT BY NOT STICKING TO THE PREMISE and people accusing me left and right of railroading despite me taking very great pains to consider the C and E of events. Like a CoC player who just waited in the tea house because meta-wise, he knows how the game goes and wanted to live, spoiling it for everyone else.

>>1943246
I don't think you get the sequence of events. Let me explain how it happened to you because you seem to have gotten fucking lost.

>I get cussed out for quitting.
>I get annoyed at being cussed out for quitting despite having an audience that is, by their own words, just rushing to get to the next prompt instead of immersing themselves

Now, from all those above, they obviously, obviously, do not give a shit about the quest or how it's meant to be played, so I ask you why the fuck, kindly, would I want to care in return for the sitters that do NOT care? Answer me that question and I might re-think my stance, but judging by the dozen or so people coming in here and going on that the Questers SHOULDN'T CARE and that I'm a SPERG for not caring in return, I really wanna know why the fuck, really, should I care when the bunch of you obviously hound me with insults and encouraging people that are here to keep the attitude of NOT caring?
