Whitaker and Penny help Neo to her seat.

TODAY:
Neo needs a place to stay. Can she crash on your couch for a few days?
>>
This bed feels like heaven, and you know beds. You’ve slept in one of the finest beds money can buy for most of your life. Sheets soft enough to work its way between your hair follicles and a mattress that supported every part of you that touched it and practically swallowed the rest of you. The bed at Beacon had been a very different experience. Like sleeping on a wooden board in comparison, but a part of you appreciated that. It made it so much easier for you to get up in the morning, to take charge and lead your team, even if it was just to the cafeteria for a few bowls of cereal and an orange. But this bed, one you found in some three-star hotel, may be the best. Well, not really. It was alright. You just wanted an excuse not to get up.

No helping it, though. You have important things to do. You sit up with a sigh and a pop in your back and take in the scene before you. Penny is still standing exactly where she had been when you fell asleep. That trick had weirded you out the first couple of times, but she had done it enough in the dorm that you were used to it. She gives you a small, innocent smile. You’re pretty sure she’s faking it.

The rest of the room seems normal until you get to your hostage. Neo is asleep, thankfully, snoring quietly to herself even as her head rolls uncomfortably off her shoulders, in a way that will surely hurt her neck when she wakes up. Her chair is also upside down, pinned to the wall by a set of familiar looking blades. You trace along the handles until you spot a small white line coming from each. The sun is in just the right position for you to follow them all back to Penny’s hands, hidden behind her back. Her smile grows and her eyes widen. You can’t help but sigh again. You’ve got a lot to handle, and not much time to do it. Where are you going to start?

>A) You’re not convinced you’ve gotten everything out of Neo. Wake her up and try again. Maybe she’ll be more honest with the threat of breaking her neck.
>B) Penny shouldn’t have done that, especially not without your permission. It may not be actively hurting Neo, but it’s still too close to abusing a prisoner for comfort. Have a talk with your teammate about this lapse of judgment before anything else.
>C) You can’t keep her in here forever, and you can’t take her back with you. You’ve got to figure out what you’re going to do with her, preferably before she wakes up.
>D) Hungry. Breakfast. Thirsty. Coffee. Everything else can wait.

Guys I'm kind of conflicted in terms of waifu, Penny is adorable, and I love her.
But Blake seems to have much more potential for interesting story stuff, and I do like her.

It’s a bad idea to put this off any longer. If you’re honest with yourself, you should have had a plan before you brought her here. You groan as you throw your legs over the bed and feel your feet sink into the carpet. You could take her to the po- No, wait. That’s why you had her in the first place.

You push yourself up and stumble towards the bathroom. Did she have a scroll? Contact someone and arrange a drop off? If things between Junior’s men and Roman’s agents were breaking down, they may be willing and able to hold her. Could be dangerous, no promise she’d stay put. Or that they’d come in peace. “Good morning, Whitaker.” The cheery voice startles you a bit, but you save face by being too out of it to jump. “Hey…” you groan. You duck underneath her cables and step into the bathroom. Your hair is standing up in every direction. With your hair color, it makes you look like a mad scientist.

You run some water over a comb and get it under control. You grunt in frustration as you have to fight with one last resistant strand of hair, and as you do, Penny leans around the door frame. “Whitaker?” she asks, “What are we going to do with her?”

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>1959168
“Working on it…” you mumble. Ozpin? You have no reason to distrust him, but something about him makes your spine tingle. Your last meeting with the headmaster had been brief, as well as some time ago, but you could never get comfortable around the man. On top of that, it’s likely he’ll simply hand her off to the police anyway. “Oh, I had an idea!” Penny continues. You motion for her to continue as you brush your teeth. Thoughtful of Penny to have brought your toothbrush. You hadn’t had breakfast yet, but by the time you get finished with all the nonsense you were due for today, it’d probably be around lunch.

“We should let her go, and then follow her! She is certain to return to wherever she believes herself to be safe. We will be able to keep track of her!” You almost tell her no, but then you remember exactly who you’re talking to. You spit into the sink, then ask, “Do you have a way to keep tabs on her when we’re not around?” Penny nods, wearing a bright smile. For some reason, you’re reminded less of a “sunny” bright and more of a “gleaming off a knife blade” bright.

>A) Risk Neo, and yourselves, to find more of Junior’s gang by giving her to them.
>B) Play it safe and bring Neo to Ozpin, someone with actual authority.
>C) Use Penny’s idea and keep tabs on Neo remotely.
>D) You’re not sure you like any of these plans. There’s gotta be something better… (Write In)

With your method of getting rid of Neo decided, it’s time to make a decision about what you’ll do right now.

“Penny, get her down. I’m going to grab us breakfast. Did you want anything?” She didn’t need to eat, of course, but she had gotten in the habit of eating with the team to keep up appearances. It always seemed like something she genuinely enjoyed. She gives you her “order” and you step out into the hall, gently closing the door as Penny begins to yank the blades (Swords? Knives? Machetes?) out of the wall.

Your trip downstairs isn’t noteworthy, save for a dark glare from the receptionist who checked you and Neo in last night. How is she still awake? You shrug it off and grab everything you need for the three meals, throw it all on three plates, and head back upstairs with two plates in your hands and a third in the crook of your arm. The receptionist watches you go with wide eyes and a blush instead. She really needs to lay down, it’s messing with her head.

Once you get back to the room, you knock on it with your foot. Penny lets you in, and you see Neo blinking the sleep out of her eyes and barely opening her mouth to yawn. You hand Penny’s plate to her and she plops onto the foot of your bed. Then you meet Neo’s eyes. She’s undecided between visually pleading at you and devouring the plate in your other hand with her eyes. It must have been a while since she last ate. You doubt she scarfed anything down before sprinting through the back alleys of Vale. It would’ve given her a cramp.

“Relax,” you tell her, “I got three plates, didn’t I?” Neo takes a moment to observe both you and Penny, as if she were counting the amount of food between you both to make sure you were telling the truth. She shrugs and nods at the same time, as best she can, to mime “I guess” at you while Penny was busy eating. Then you look at her wrists, still strapped to the chair. That was going to make eating difficult.

>A) You’re being nice, but that doesn’t mean you can take risks. Keep her hands bound and feed her yourself.
>B) All she has on her plate are two waffles and an apple. You’re pretty sure you can take any of those to the face, even if she threw them as hard as she could. It should be safe to let her feed herself.

You grab the twin chair to the one Neo is currently tied to and pull up a set beside her. Setting your plate on the floor beside you, you grab your fork and cut a bite out of Neo’s waffle. You jab the fork into it and hold it up to Neo. You probably should have looked at her before now. It would have given you a better idea of what made her pull as far away from you as possible, a look of panic on her face. “What?” you ask, “I’m not going to untie you. You tried to stab me. If you’re want to eat something, this is how you’re going to.”

Neo seems to grimace at the idea, looking nervously over your shoulder. You turn to look behind you and see Penny, frozen with a bit of her own waffle still dangling from her lips, the rest probably contributing to her puffed up cheeks. She’s staring twin holes into Neo. You shrug at her, you’re not sure what Neo’s problem is either, before turning back towards your prisoner. “Are you hungry or not?” you ask, perhaps more aggressively than you meant to. Your arm is getting tired.

Neo nibbles on the end of the fork, never breaking eye contact with Penny as she does. The two of them eventually turn their attention back to their food and pick up the pace, though you did notice more than a few wide eyed glances between the two of them when they thought the other wasn’t looking. It’s as if each of them expected the other to pounce as soon as they dropped their guard. It seems like an odd amount of tension for breakfast, but then the scene you woke up to, as well as Penny’s aggression the night before, hits you like a ton of bricks. That is… Quite frankly a suspicious amount of animosity and nerves between two people who just met. And why does Penny know sign language?

>A) There’s no better way to learn than to ask. “Do you to know each other?”

It made be a bit rash, but in these past twenty-four hours, you seem to have legally changed your name to “Whitaker ‘Rash’ Schnee,” and now you have a reputation to uphold. “Do you two know each other?” you ask, as casually as you felt. Penny and Neo both inhale a bite of waffle at the same time. It sends your captive into a fit of coughs and leaves Penny free to stare at you. “Why do you ask?” she says, not at all conveying the easy attitude you projected.

“Well, I don’t know. It feels like there’s something more personal than just ‘she tried to stab my teammate.’” Penny slows down in every aspect. Blinking, moving her arms, her mouth, her false breathing. It all slows until she sits motionless on the bed, staring through you with lifeless eyes. Beside you, Neo begins to convulse. Is she choking?! A quick check reveals that she’s grinning at Penny. Well, that’s good. She’s just laughing. Silently. That bothers you for some reason.

Neo begins signing again, leaning towards you with a shark-like grin. “Penny? What’s she saying?” Whatever it is, it’s enough to jumpstart Penny again. You’re glad for that. You’re not sure you could have explained how long she was holding her breath.

“Nothing!” Penny squeaks. “She isn’t saying anything important at all, it’s just gibberish!” Neo’s laughter causes her chair to tip over, but it doesn’t seem as though she minds. You’re getting sick of not knowing what’s so funny. Well, if it’s something to laugh about, it probably wasn’t that important anyway.

>A) Neo’s been here too long. If you wait much longer, the hotel staff may find her tied up like this. It’s time to take her to Ozpin.
>B) You should probably wait until dark. She’ll fall asleep again and be much easier to move. Of course, if you’re going to be awake for it, you should probably nap for a little while.

If getting her in while she was sleeping was so easy, it’d be idiotic not to try the same strategy to get her out. There were a few issues to work out. Last time, she had been exhausted by fighting you. Today she had done nothing but sit in an uncomfortable chair and eat. It’d take much longer for her to finally nod off, and even if she did, it probably wouldn’t be the near-comatose state she was in when you brought her here.

You briefly entertain the idea of tiring her out but decide against it. Letting her go just to try and beat her again seemed arrogant. You had no idea of you could win. You’d like to talk about it with Penny, but it seemed like a bad idea, considering Neo would hear everything you said. So instead, you send her a text on her scroll.

“We need to talk about moving her. Text back, but try not to look like you are.”

You can’t put the scroll down before a response comes.

“Okay!”

You look up at Penny, still silently glaring at Neo. Her scroll wasn’t in her hands.

“Who is this?” you ask, and once again, the response is instant.

“It’s Penny! I have connected directly to my scroll, so that we may communicate in secret!” You smile. Clever thinking. You really need to dig into what Penny’s full capabilities were beyond combat. It seems as though Dr. Polendina included an extensive array of utility features. Still, better safe than sorry.

“Tell me how many fingers I’m holding up,” you send, lifting two. She responds correctly, and you repeat the process a few more times to be sure. Once you are, you explain your plan.

“We’re going to move her back to Beacon tonight. Less chance of being spotted by anyone who’d be looking for her. Junior’s gang may want revenge, and she may be wanted by the police for entirely different reasons. We need her asleep when we move her, to keep her from running. Do you have any ideas?”

It takes a few seconds for the response to come. “She has already proven willing to consume what we provide her. Perhaps you could hide sleeping medication in her dinner?”

That was… Pretty underhanded, especially coming from Penny. It made sense. A lot more than just clubbing her over the back of the head. “Do you have any money to buy some?”

“No need,” she replied, “I have already asked Weiss to retrieve a supply I brought from home.” Your heart jumps a bit, and then you swallow. She had left in a hurry last night, Weiss and Blake may not know where you’d been the past day and a half…

“Penny, did you explain the situation to the rest of the team first?”

“Of course.” Whew. That’s one less thing to worry about. Nothing left to do but wait for Weiss to show up, and for nightfall. There was still one question you wanted to ask…

“Why did you bring sleeping pills?”
>>
>>1960272
>Weiss, I found the girl! She's tied up in my hotel room right now!
>What!?
>Don't worry, Penny's keeping her occupied! Though I could do without their moaning.
>WHIT WHERE ARE YOU
>Sorry Weiss, I'm just /really exhausted./ Last night was killer on the joints.
>...
>Weiss? You there?
>... Whit this is Blake.
>Huh? What happened to Weiss?
>She stormed off. I think she went to the hangar. Where are you btw?
>Oh. I was telling her I caught a suspect. She's tied up in my hotel room right now. Penny's watching her. You two need to cover for us. We're going to Beacon later this evening.

Neo’s eyes tried to widen as she felt the effects of her spiked drink hit her. She could only just manage to look at you before she passed out. Weiss let out a frustrated sigh and set back to chewing you out, now that it wouldn’t technically be showing weakness in front of the enemy. “It’s like you have a second semblance,” she began, “based entirely around convincing me to do the most idiotic, risky things possible and still have it make sense.”

You roll your eyes and grab your toothbrush. It’s all you had to pack. “I just drugged someone on your say so!” Weiss continues, ranting in a loud whisper. “You interrogated me for an hour before you agreed to do it,” you point out. That was hardly just because you asked so nicely, Whitaker.

“But-!”

“But it’s what we have to do.” you cut her off, finality in your tone. “Ozpin is the only person in Vale we can trust with this now, and we can’t get her to him if she’s conscious. It’s not comfortable, but it’s the only way.” Weiss grimaces in an unflattering way, as if she were literally chewing on her words. She’s still not happy about it, but she can’t say you aren’t right. You heave a mental sigh. This is just one of those things your sister will have to get over on her own. You’ll be busy paying for the holes Penny put in the wall.

You untie Neo and pick her up in a bridal carry once again, ready to brave the night with two-thirds of your teammates.

The trip back to the Bullheads hadn’t been eventful, despite your misgivings about Junior’s gang or the police wanting to take on a much more vulnerable Neo. As before, you passed through the crowd unobstructed, though certainly not unobserved. It was easy to see one of the ways she had managed to avoid being arrested before now. The pitying glances and reassuring smiles from those around you made it abundantly clear that Neo wasn’t threatening in any way when she wasn’t trying to be.

Your leg bounces during the flight, and you have to fight the urge to lift Neo’s lolling head as it rests on your shoulder. It may wake her up if the heat from Penny’s glare didn’t wake her first. You’re a little flattered by how protective she’s been since this whole incident began. It didn’t feel as though she thought you were incapable, more that she was perfectly aware that she could remove a threat before it became one. Now that you think of it in those terms, it sounded much more… Morally ambiguous. You still haven’t spoken with her about leaving her prisoner in such a state.

Once your back on the plateau Beacon rests on, you and the girls hurry as quickly as you can towards Ozpin’s office. You’re not sure where the Headmaster spends his time otherwise, and you weren’t looking forward to tracking him down if he wasn’t there. You’re only a few steps from the elevator when a strict voice stops you all in your tracks.

“Where exactly do you think you’re going?” You can almost hear the bone in your neck creaking as you slowly turn towards Ms. Goodwitch. She’s only just begun to step outside an office you don’t recognize, several folders tucked under her arm, and she’s fixed the three of you (and the unconscious girl in your arms) with a diamond-hard glare. This doesn’t look good.

>A) She’s Ozpin’s number two, there’s no reason to worry! Just tell her the truth and she’ll be able to help.
>B) Lie. Lie like you’re on fire and ready to start rolling. “We were… Taking her to the nurse! She fainted.”
>C) Let Penny and Weiss take the lead, and sneak onto the elevator while they’ve got her attention.

The entire story takes nearly twenty minutes to go over in its entirety, with Goodwitch stopping you every few minutes to ask a pertinent question. As you speak, you can see her disapproving glare slip slowly from you to the girl in your arms. You take it as a good sign. With Penny and Weiss acting as “witnesses,” you’re confident that your story could only be more believable if Neo had actually managed to break your aura and give you a more permanent wound to show.

“Bring her in,” she says when you’ve finished your story, gesturing to the room she had only stepped out of before. You’re a little surprised to discover that it’s her office. You hadn’t known she had one, and you’re not sure what the message behind having her office be so far away from where she spent most of her time working. Perhaps she had made Ozpin upset about something and this was a small, admittedly petty way of getting back at her?

At her insistence, you set Neo on a small couch that’s set against the wall, then take a seat in front of her desk, leaving Penny and Weiss to stand over your shoulders.

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>1967322
“Give me a moment,” she commands, taking a seat behind her desk and rapidly sorting through the information she pulls up. As she reads, the thin line of her mouth only gets thinner.

“I’ll have to contact the hotel to be certain of your story, but I have no reason to doubt you. You’ve been a model student, and team, during your time here.” She turns back towards you, still serious, but professionally, as opposed to aggressively. “I’ll keep an eye on her until the Headmaster can make a decision on how to proceed.”

You’re surprised to find yourself nervously smiling at her. “I’m glad to hear that. Honestly, I was worried we’d be in trouble when you first showed up.” She doesn’t return the smile.

“Restraining her for nearly a full twenty-four hour period and drugging her is certainly not the type of behavior I expect to see from our students,” she snaps. Your eyes barely have time to widen before she continues, “Given the circumstances, I am prepared to overlook that as a snap decision made by someone who was unprepared for such a situation.” You can feel yourself breathe again.

“You’ve been under an incredible amount of pressure from criminal elements during your time at this school, Mr. Schnee, and I am not unsympathetic. In the future, I trust you will come to a member of the staff immediately, should something like this happen again.” You can’t nod fast enough, and soon after, you’re dismissed and return to your room.

Blake seems uncomfortable when you enter. Glad to see you alive and well, but certainly uncomfortable. It can’t have been easy sitting here and waiting for an update. You’d devote time to reassuring her, but after the talk with Ms. Goodwitch, all you want to do is crash face first into your uncomfortable wooden-board bed and sleep like the dead. So you do.

The next day progressed as normal. You spent time with your team and your books, mostly, but the few familiar faces you saw in the halls as you passed were a pleasant break from that. Jaune was expressing interest in another practice match/drinking contest. He must have won. You don’t even remember a drinking contest. He chuckles at your genuine confusion as he and the rest of team RYAL take their leave. The last, and smallest, but certainly not least of them takes up the rear.

“Bye, Ellie,” you wave at her. She returns it with a smile, but not a response. She never said anything to you, not that you really minded. She was plenty expressive otherw-

She never said anything to you. In all the time you’ve known her and her team, Liquorice, or Ellie, has never spoken to you. You’ve never heard her say anything to her team, either. She was short, shorter than Weiss. Shorter than Weiss. You don’t think you’ve ever had a panic attack, but this felt remarkably like one.

>A) No, no. Calm down and get a hold of yourself, Whitaker. This is what Weiss and Winter are always talking about. You handed Neo in yourself. There’s no way she got loose, and there is CERTAINLY no way she’s been posing as a student you KNEW for over seven months.
>B) It all fit. Why she was hardly around her team those first few months, why she never said a word to anyone, why no one felt they could trust her during the Junior arrest… Everything fit together perfectly. Paranoia is fine and dandy, but after a point we really shouldn't get involved, we should sit tight and stay vigilant, but no more than that.

If you're going to gather information on "Ellie," you need to work fast. It's going to be dangerous. Penny needs to be kept on watch duty all night, not that she'd mind. But in the meantime, how exactly are you planning on digging for information on her?

>A) Spend time with her partner. Jaune isn't... Subtle. If something, ANYTHING, seems wrong, he'll be the one to spill the details. Of course, he may be equally unsubtle about your asking, the next time he speaks to her.
>B) Spend time with her leader. If Ruby takes being a leader as seriously as you think she does, she's likely to have paid very close attention to exactly when Ellie isn't around. Ruby's drive to do good will ensure she stays your ally, even when Ellie is exposed. Of course, that same heroic drive may lead her to confront her errant teammate before you're ready.
>C) Spend time with her teammate. Without the direct responsibility that comes from being her leader or her partner, Yang is perhaps the least likely to let any details of your investigation slip. Of course, she's also the least likely to know anything.
>D) Confront Ellie directly and attempt to provoke her into outing herself. On one hand, it's fast and definitive. On the other, you're inviting another fight with an assassin who knows where you sleep AND how to reach you.

Time for Ruby to get shunted back into the quest like a bullet from a railgun! Writing!
>>
>>1967638
The best place to speak to Ruby would be in private, and the best place to do that would be the armory. Everyone had spent a decent amount of time in there, no one wanted to run out of bullets their caliber, but Ruby had proven to be just as obsessed with the place as she had been your first day on campus.

You had little doubt that Crescent Rose was one of, if not the, most well kept weapon at Beacon. It was high-maintenance, but Ruby was willing to put the hours in to keep it in working order. You respected that, even if you thought Ruby could stand a certain amount of downgrading. You aren’t sure she even uses half the things that scythe can do. It, in addition to taking up a large chunk of her schedule, made her very easy to find in a private location where most people would only spend the bare minimum amount of time.

Sure enough, she’s there now, mumbling to herself as she picks at the innards of her weapon. Her trademark hooded cloak was hung, delicately, on the mounting for some form or war hammer or battleaxe that currently sat empty. You had only just walked in and the heat was getting to you. She would’ve passed out from heatstroke if she had kept in on. You consider simply walking up and talking to her, but you’d like to have some sort of idea of what you want to SAY before you blurt out something stupid. After all, this is a delicate matter.

>A) Ask about her. “Hey, Ruby. Have you been doing okay, lately?”
>B) Come right out and ask. “Ruby, what’s Ellie been up to these past few weeks?”
>C) Try to show a kinship of interests. “More upgrades? What is it this time?”

You glide towards her. She doesn’t look up. She must have heard you come in. You lean in, absent-mindedly noting that she seems to be checking the bottom segment of the scythe's handle. “More up-” An incredibly loud yelp cuts you off and echoes off the walls as Ruby jumps, rattling the tools she had set aside. Oh. You had your mouth almost right next to her ear.

You aren’t entirely sure it had been your fault. The floor in here was concrete and your boots aren’t soft. You certainly had heard to echoes of your footsteps, but Ruby must have been too far into her own work. Ruby whips around and relaxes when she sees you. “Oh! Whit, I didn’t hear you come in.” You give her a smile that you hope comes across as more amused than strained.

You flick your eyes back towards her project and ask your question, “More upgrades?” Ruby grins and practically twirls back towards her work. You’re not sure how she did it while sitting down. “Yeah, I’m trying to see if I can fit another blade on the bottom of the shaft, another sweeping blade instead of the stabbing one I have there now, but it looks like I’m gonna have to move around a lot of the mechanisms to make room for the spring and lock mechanisms and I just hope that doesn’t mean I have to expand the chasing again.” You think you got all of that, even though she had let it all go in one breath.

“That’s… Nice,” you state simply, not trusting yourself to offer a real opinion lest you end up getting dragged into an endless conversation about it. Honestly, the mechanisms that Langerdorn uses to lock itself in place as a battleaxe would probably solve Ruby’s problem quite handily, but that’s not as important as what you’re here to talk about.

>A) Let her know now. “I think we need to talk about your teammate. I don’t believe Ellie is who she says she is.”
>B) Dance around the topic while getting what you need. “Have you seen Ellie anywhere? I’ve been trying to find her for the past few days and she keeps giving me the slip.”
>C) Actually, this did look pretty important… “If you need some help, I think I’m somewhat familiar with the type of spring mechanisms you’ll need to make it work.”

Sure.

From #1 is a long spear, with a very large blade for its size. The blade seems to be a single piece, but there's still a distinct line along the center on both sides. I've always pictured the blade as a tall pentagram, but that's a bit liquid, feel free to do whatever. It's about 7-8' long in my head.

Form #2 is the battleax. Same handle as #1, but the blade has split into two separate blades and slid backward. They are almost exactly the same shape as #1's blade, just in a different position. The inner workings of the split are not visible, as the mechanisms that lock the head of the spear together are also locking the ax
heads into place.

#3 is the rifle. The shaft of the melee weapons has widened considerably, as well as shortened. This form is only about 2' long. The barrel opens at the bottom of the shaft, with the grip and trigger mechanism being closer to the head. The blades have shifted again, now forming a very large handguard around the trigger.

It's pretty fluid, this is just how I picture it when I have to describe how the changes between forms are happening. Assume everything I didn't mention is up to you, and everything I did is changeable if it makes no fucking sense visually.

It seems your approximation on the size of the parts Ruby would need was… Not exactly great. You had based your guess of the numbers of the OTHER parts Ruby had been using. Size 14 spring, size 13 rotators… It hadn’t been that big of a stretch to say the 11’s that Langerdorn used would work. Unfortunately, you had failed to take into account that Ruby tooled her own parts and, thus, had an entirely different measurement system.

That, in an of itself, wouldn’t have been a problem. The problem was that you had helped her install them. It had been a tight fit, it was supposed to be. But it was too tight because the parts were too large, and now getting them back out again was proving to be difficult. Ruby and you had the strength to rip the parts out, but only if you were both channeling your auras, and at that point, you might as well sprinkle Fire dust in the inner workings and try to blast them loose. The opposite approach had the opposite problem - Ruby wasn’t strong enough to hold the shaft steady OR pry the parts out.

Both of you are soaked with sweat by the time you finally give up. You can barely see Ruby’s eyes, now that her hair is hanging over her face. Ruby find her chair again and you find a clean enough spot on the ground against the wall. Why does your whole body hurt? You only ever used your arms.

>A) Bail. She’s got to be upset that you messed up Crescent Rose, even accidentally. You didn’t get anything about Ellie, but that’s the price you pay for trying to help, you suppose.

>>1968596
She looks so forlorn. You don’t think you’d ever seen Ruby truly upset about something. Even your kidnapping had elected only concern, not actual heart-clenching sadness. You could have been crushed by the guilt you felt, but you push yourself back up, despite your shrieking muscles, and dust the filth off. You can practically hear your father’s voice sneering at you, and for some reason, it motivates you. “A Schnee is not beaten by a scrap of metal.”

“Come on, Ruby, one last shot,” you mutter, loud enough only for her to hear you. Even if someone had been in the room, they would’ve thought you were whispering. She pushes the sweat-drenched hair out of her eyes and, to your surprised, only seems as tired as you feel. Huh. Guess it’ll take even more that her weapon being (potentially) to make Ruby tear up. Still, she doesn’t give you the smile she would have under any other circumstance. Instead, she offers only a small nod and returns to the work bench.

You relay a quick plan to her, unsure how she’ll take it. If you’re wrong this time, you’ll warp the part without a doubt and she’ll have to make the entire thing, innards and all, before Crescent Rose is fully functional again. Still, it has a greater-than-zero chance of working, and it’s all you haven’t tried, so she gives you a serious nod and silently takes her position.

You set a hand on each end of the part, while Ruby jams a metal rod in the small clearance between the misplaced parts and the chassis. You give a count of three, and then twist for all your worth without your aura. It isn’t much. Ruby is similarly straining. Despite being petite by any standards, you can still see the muscles in her arm rippling with effort. You count again. On three, the two of you begin to glow slightly. It’s practically invisible in the ambient light of the armory, but it’s certainly there.

The fields of light get brighter by the second, and while you never stop straining as hard as you can, the actual pain of doing so is lessened. Eventually, the auras become plainly visible, though what you’re doing may not be. An outside observer would only see you and Ruby in odd poses, flexing the muscles on your now-exposed arms as hard as you can and glowing. Why is it that whenever you use your aura to perform feats of incredible strength, it ends up looking like something anyone could do?

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>1968921
There’s a deafening “ping”. Ruby is practically shot into the ground, a high-pitched yelp the only indication she had even had a chance to notice. Your job, fortunately, didn’t have the possibility of being launched by the sheer force you were putting into it, so you let go of the shaft and go to check on Ruby. She barely spares the effort of brushing you off, instead pulling herself back to her feet and intensely scrutinizing the part that you had spent the last few what-felt-like-hours trying to save. Judging by the blinding grin that splits her cheeks, you did a good job.

You frown, then look up. Where did the part you had put in go? You find it lodged in the wall on the opposite side of the room, buried halfway. Ruby, clutching the piece to her chest as if it would break again if she weren’t there, can only stare wide-eyed. It’s incredible that you hadn’t warped the metal at all, and still put enough force into it to bury it in anything, much less a brick wall. Still, you shouldn’t leave it there. You give it a tug. The part doesn’t budge.

“Oh, FUCK it!” you shout. Ruby’s giggles echo down the hall.

That's basically all of that dude's stories. I can't even hate him for it, because he's blatantly doing it for the patreon money and that's just good business.

You close the locker with your “combat” gear as softly as you can, then rest your head against it. You hadn’t embarrassed yourselves or anything, team SPWB had done fairly well in the latest team exercise. Much better than your first, anyway. Still, it was impossible for you not to notice yourself slipping, even if Professor Port didn’t. Your reaction time was abysmal, nearly a full quarter of a second slower than usual. On top of that, your plan of attack was nonsensical. Penny should never be off the front line.

This entire situation with Neo has thrown you off worse than you care to admit. You should have told Weiss and Penny about your suspicions by now, it’s stupid of you to look into this alone. You can’t pinpoint what’s stopping you. Is it a personal vendetta against Neo that you want to settle, payback for how she personally brought you to face the executioner in that warehouse, or do you want to spare both of them the nagging fear that even if you catch her, nothing will stop her from escaping again? After all, if they don’t know she’s loose, she has no reason to come for them… You’ve got to get her off the streets and for good this time. If not for the good of Vale, then for your own peace of-

“Hey.”

Your heart jumps into your throat, and you follow its example. Any onlookers would see you nearly scramble up the surface of the locker like a frightened gecko before you can turn and see who, exactly, snuck up on you during your rumination about threats on your life. Blake is leaning away from you with eyes wide, more than likely startled herself by your lively reaction.

“Uh… Hey.” It isn’t your smoothest recovery, but it’s the best you can do after a near heart attack. There’s another moment of awkward silence in which you smooth out your uniform. Blake takes the time to visibly collect herself, closing her eyes and drawing a deep breath, before she says what’s on her mind.

“You’re in trouble,” she states. There’s no hint of a question in her tone. Before you can even decide whether or not to deny her assertion, she continues, “You’ve been jittery and nervous ever since you got back from your fight with the kidnapper. There should be some closure, but you asked Penny to stay up last night. You’re still worried that someone is coming for you, and as long as I’ve known you, you’ve never been worried without a good reason.” That is a fairly accurate summary of your mindset. You’re beginning to second guess the need to tell your team anything if they can read you that easily.

“Let me help you,” she says after you hesitate to respond. “I know you still haven’t gotten over who I used to be, and I don’t blame you for that. But you accepted me when I told you what I am, and you tried to when you found out about the Fang. I want to pay you back for that.” Blake had never been particularly expressive, much less so after the beach trip, which may be what makes the slight tremor in her voice stand out to you.

You have to chew on the idea for a minute, but you can’t think of a good reason to deny Blake the chance to help. “Alright,” you mutter, only barely loud enough for her to hear you. Her shoulders slacken and she stands up straighter. It isn’t a big change, but it speaks volumes of how much pressure she felt in asking. There’s even a small smile that you can make out, but it’s buried under an air of detached professionalism almost immediately.

“So, what’s the problem?” You spend several minutes catching Blake up to the series of events that’ve happened since your foray into the streets of Vale after dark a few days ago. Blake spends a few more asking clarifying questions, and by the time she fully understands the situation, it’s time for your next class. Both of your mouths thin into grim lines as the same thought occurs to you. Team RYAL will also attend this lecture.

----

You and Blake are sitting next to one another, a slight break in the usual pattern of Weiss, you, Penny, then Blake. The droning monologue about Dust, covering topics that you had been tutored in for years (mostly because your family had funded the research) was failing to hold your attention for entirely different reasons than usual. Directly in beneath you, “Ellie” is sitting with the rest of her team. Occasional glances she tosses over her shoulder, complete with a taunting, self-assured and toothless smile, rattle you without fail. It’s as if she knows you know, even though she has no reason to suspect.

It doesn’t help that Blake is practically radiating hostility and nervousness. You can practically feel her hair stand on end whenever Neo looks at you. What is this? Is she hinting that she knows about you looking into her? You haven’t even accomplished anything yet! You haven’t even said the word “Ellie,” or “Liquorice,” or “Neo,” or whatever else she had been calling herself. How could she possibly know?

>A) She can’t. Neo is only keeping an eye on you because she wants to make sure she’s fooled you. Perhaps if you play along, she’ll get comfortable. You’ll be able to watch her, discreetly, and catch any slip ups as they happen.
>B) You don’t think she really has any clue, but it’s best to keep your distance and keep it that way. Your original idea of questioning her teammates was a good one, and with Blake, you can investigate from two angles at once.
>C) She knows. There’s no way she would be so blatant about watching you if she didn’t intend is as a warning. “I know you’re there.” You need to talk to Blake, regroup, and come up with a new method of attack, one that accounts for Neo being able to counter you.

Tracking down Ruby was proving to be much more difficult today. It seems the near miss with Crescent Rose the last time had scared her off from her favorite hiding place. That was probably a good thing. She hardly needs more gadgets in that thing… At a loss as to where she could be, you decide to take the path of least resistance and send a message on your scroll.

Ruby points you to the library, and only a quick jog later, you find her pouring over a textbook for the Dust class you had together. She must not have been paying attention either. You pull up a chair and earn a smile for your presence. “Hey,” she offers, only looking away to glance at you, give her greeting, and then return to her work. She seems very engrossed.

“Trouble with Dust?” you venture, and Ruby pouts slightly into her book. “Not really, but I’m not where I want to be. Does that count?” You aren’t sure, so you don’t comment. As fun, and stressful, as it had been to help Ruby in the armory, you were only slightly embarrassed to have been so thoroughly sidetracked from something so important. Getting into a real conversation about homework may end the same way.

You’ve got Ruby reasonably alone, and though it may be interrupting, you need to ask about her teammate. What do you say?

>A) Ask for what you need to know, but keep it vague enough. “I think something’s wrong with Ellie. Have you noticed anything weird?”
>B) Fill Ruby in on the situation, so she knows exactly what to look for. “I think Ellie’s been working with Roman and Junior. How has she been acting since they went down?”
>C) Get a picture of who “Ellie” is to her friends before you start trying to pick the disguise apart. “Ellie doesn’t talk much. I’m kinda worried about her. Does she do anything for fun?”

“Ellie doesn’t talk much. I’m kinda worried about her. Does she do anything for fun?” you ask, careful to control your voice to inflect the tone of a concerned acquaintance. Ruby shrugs at the question, still reading from her textbook. “Ellie never talks,” she confirms, “so don’t worry about that. She’s not really shy. She likes to prank Jaune a lot, and she seems to have a lot of fun doing that.” You hum in acknowledgement and try not to seem disappointed. It isn’t as much as you would have hoped.

“Anything else?” Ruby pokes her tongue out as she thinks, either about your question or the measurement problem she’s working. “I’m pretty sure she liked bowling that one time? I dunno, Whit, she’s pretty private. It took her the whole last semester to start hanging out with us, and even then, she still just does whatever one of us wants to do. She never suggests anything.”

This disguise is so paper thin that you could make it fly away by blowing on it. All you’d have to do was look for confirmed sightings of Neo and match them to periods where Ellie was away from the team, and people would at least start to wonder, the last thing you want when you’re hiding in plain sight. Which is good news, you suppose, but it makes you wonder why she hadn’t put any real effort into maintaining the identity. Before you can devote any time into setting up reasons for it, Ruby interrupts you with a question of her own.

“Why are you so interested in Ellie, anyway?”

>A) Tell her the truth. “I’m starting to think Ellie may not be who she says she is.”
>B) Double down on your original story. “I was just worried, Ruby. It doesn’t seem healthy.”
>C) Divert her suspicion with a false confession. “Well, Jaune and I have been hanging out a lot. I think he’s interested in her.”

“...What?” The book lay forgotten on the library table. Ruby’s attention was entirely on you. You shrug, cheeks burning ever so slightly, as you say, “It’s not like he told me or anything. It’s just a feeling I got, I wanted to help him out…” You jump slightly as Ruby slams the book shut.

“Tell. Me. Everything.

Blake found her “target,” for lack of a better word, in her dorm. The RYAL quarters weren’t too far from her own. An easy excuse if Yang wanted an explanation for her presence; She just wanted to check on the neighbors.

A quick series of light knocks elicited a muffled invitation, and Blake cracked the door to find Yang, on the floor and in her pajamas, playing some form of game. It was an impressive setup. Not that Blake was any type of expert, but the massive holographic screen certainly looked nice to her.

“Hey, Blake! Jaune tell you about the ‘Slay the Dragon’ pot, too? I gotta warn ya, I’ve crushed five challengers this week,” Yang shot over her shoulder. Blake didn’t need to see her face to know she was grinning at her streak.

“No, I’m just here to talk.” And snoop. And prod. Talking was only a vehicle for what Blake was here to do.

“‘Bout what?” Yang asked as she shuffled a few inches to the side to make room. Taking the unspoken invitation, Blake settled on the floor beside her.

“Have you noticed anything weird about Ellie lately?”

“Like what?” the blonde asked in the same chipper tone, still focused almost entirely on the unfolding match on screen.

“I don’t know,” Blake shrugged, “Talking to weird people, going to weird places?” Yang sat in silence for a few moments, furrowing her brow as she thought.

“Well, she’s been to Ozpin and Goodwitch’s offices, like, three times today.” That was almost exactly the opposite of what Blake expected to hear.

What?” Yang shrugs again, relaxed now that she could simply rattle off the answer without having to multitask between thinking about it, keeping a conversation, and whooping this loser’s ass for three matches in a row.

“Probably more. She disappeared that way after every class and came back from the same direction. I only saw her go in Ms. Goodwitch’s once, but what else is in the center of the school?”

Blake didn’t have an answer to the hypothetical. Whitaker needed to know, now. Blake pushed herself off the floor and hurriedly mentioned something about being late for a team exercise before flying out of the room and back towards her own dorm.

You hadn’t pegged Ruby as a gossip, but she was merciless if the subject interested her. Apparently. You just hope she doesn’t go overboard. Some things you came up with to deflect her questions would have been fairly good evidence of Jaune having a crush, had you actually seen any of it.

Come to think of it, Jaune did have a crush. He hadn’t brought it up in some time, though. Maybe he finally gave up on Weiss? You unlock the door to your room and step in with your head still poking at the idea. Blake cuts off all consideration for Jaune’s love life when she rushes you, grips your shoulders and hisses, “We need to talk.”
