You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you were with Archmagus Elias, who was about to tell you what he knew about Morgan's rather hazy origins. Being an odd, nonhuman magical creature, he was sure to know a thing or two.

"Hmmmm, well where would I begin...?" Elias muses to himself, his eyes flaring like hot embers.

"Get talking, old man!" Nino grunts.

"My my, she's grown quite hotheaded while with you. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised." Elias chuckles. "Are you sure you want her to be present for this?

Thinking about our reputation as a firestarter among the elves got me thinking we should put some effort into our showmanship to exploit the exaggerated stories about us.

If we really wanted our reputation to be horribly exaggerated, we could borrow Morgan's bow for a bit and try to breathe fire so it would look like our head was aflame, while Nino is our pyro-technician.
>>
>>1968110
Nah that sounds dumb. Would rather be know as the ashmaker. Elfs saying we appear from the ashes of fire that's how we can burn entire camps with our arrival.

You nod to Nino. Perhaps it was best she not be present.

"Hmph! Fine!" Nino pouts.

"No worries, Nino, you may wait in the Library as we talk." Elias waves his arm, and a new portal opens.

"Really? No restrictions?" Nino asks, seemingly tided over.

"As long as you don't take anything out of the Library itself." Elias warns, his eyes flashing red for a brief moment.

"Okaaaay!" Nino says as she leaps through the portal. You're not sure if she had even heard Elias' warning.

"Now, back to the matter at hand." Elias turns his gaze back on to you. "I have been doing some research ever since her, well... [i[changes[/i]."

You lean forward.

"Oh please, we Mages have ways of knowing things." Elias chuckles. "Moreso that she was giving of a different... shall we say aura? Regardless, there are of course no official records of her origins. Very common among those born on the literal fringes of society."

You nod, moreso to get him to get to the point. These were things you were aware of already.

"Anyways, it is my calculation that Morgan is not human." Elias' eyes fall on you. "Or more accurately, not fully human. A sort of demihuman, if you will."

You continue to glare at Elias. Morgan? A demihuman?

"She shows the physical changes, does she not?" Elias asks you. "But this does intrigue me. Our records tell of strange, beastlike people that roamed these woods centuries ago, but that was well before any sort of organized exploration effort. It was all written off as superstition and Elven mischief."

You tilt your head. But now he thinks otherwise.

"There's still so much we do not know about the Frontier." Elias' eyes smolder and flicker. "An entire tribe of people, treading the line between beast and human. The thought is utterly fascinating."

Was it?

"Now, has Morgan ever given you any clues about where she might have come from?" Elias leans in, his eyes glowing brighter. "This would certainly help in our research efforts."

You wonder what kind of "research" he was referring to.

But you do recall Morgan's attraction to those distant mountains. Should you tell that him...?

You turn to a map of the Frontier that Elias happened to have on his desk and you point at the unmarked mountain range. The one where Morgan was so interested in.

"Yes, yes... that would make sense." Elias nods. "Isolated, defensible, and self sufficient in resources. A sizeable society could live there with absolutely zero contact with us..."

You nod warily.

"I must thank you, Templar. With this information, I can convince the other Archmagi to devote more resources to exploration." Elias nods rapidly. "Yes... yes. This is a development that they cannot ignore."

Hm. Did you really do the right thing?

"Thank for your cooperation. Of course, I'll keep you updated on any new developments." Elias bows his head to you. "And, would you by any chance bring Morgan by here whenever you have the chance? I've heard about her new condition, but I've never witnessed it for myself..."

You shrug. That would be up to her.

"Understandable." Elias nods quickly. "I hope you are satisfied?"

You nod. You were satisfied for now. But you were still wary of his motives.

"Excellent. Please, if you need anything else, do come by." Elias waves his hand again, and new portal opens. You give him a respectful nod and step through it.

"About time!" Nino pouts, already waiting for you at the gate. "You sure were taking your time with him!"

You just shrug. Couldn't be helped.

"Y-you're not some kind of evil clone he replaced you with, right?" Nino pauses.

You shake your head and ruffle her hair to reassure you.

"Okay, I guess you're still the real thing!" Nino nods.

That's when you notice her cloak being a little bulkier than before. Looks like Nino was taking back a few "souvenirs"...

You grab Nino's cloak and lift it up, revealing a pair of thick, leatherbound books floating just underneath. Sneaky little girl was trying to make off with some prizes, you see. You give Nino a disapproving glare.

"I was just gonna borrow them!" Nino insists.

You calmly grab the books and toss them over to Justine at the gate, who easily snatches them out of the air.

"Our thanks, Templar." Justine nods respectfully.

"Yeah! We won't have to beat ya both this time!" Caroline huffs.

You give a wave to the two girls as you exit. Justine waves back while Caroline cross her arms and turns around, refusing to face you. Such odd girls.

"So, so, where are we going next?" Nino asks happily, her arms wrapped around yours. Looks like her excitement at being back in the city has overridden her anger at being deprived of books.

Nino pulls you to a rather elegant looking shop. The wooden sign in front displaying a picture of a large gemstone. You immediately began to suspect why Naru was not willing to spend on Nino...

However, it was too late to resist or protest, as Nino pulls you in.

"Welcome!" The shopkeeper, a rather portly Dwarf says happily.

You nod to him. Dwarves weren't so bad, as they'd traditionally had close ties with humans. Plus, their desire for profit usually overrode any sort of fear of discrimination they may have against Templars like you.

Nino was already eagerly eying the cases, full of resplendent jewelry and accessories of all types. Honestly, you never expected Nino to be interested in such things.

You suppose Nino deserves to spoiled once in a while. If she had a fondness for shiny items, well, who were you to tell her she was wrong? You walk over to one particular display case that seemed to catch Nino's attention, her eyes sparkling as she looks at the contents within.

You do have to admit, the craftmanship on these items was rather exquisite. Gold and silver seamlessly weaving and twisting around perfectly cut and clear gems. There was an odd, if impractical, beauty to it.

"Can we get them? Please please please?" Nino hops up and down in excitement.

You raise one finger. One item only.

"AWWWWWWWW." Nino whines.

You remain adamant, keeping one finger raised. Nino had to learn limits, plus you were pretty sure you only had enough gold on hand for one of these items...

You point to the twin silver bracelets, fashioned to look like dragons. They felt somewhat... fitting.

"Aye, those are popular pieces!" The Dwarven shopkeeper chortles. He hobbles over and unlocks the case gently handing over the twin bracelets to Nino. "Now you take good care of those, little lady!"

"I will!" Nino giggles.

You casually hand a small bag of gold to the shopkeeper. Payment for the bracelets.

"Pleasure doing business with you!" The shopkeeper bows his head.

Nino's smile was so wide you were afraid the corners of her mouth would fly straight off her face. She slips one of the bracelets onto her right wrist. She then turns and holds the other one out to you.

You pause and stare at it curiously.

"It's a set!" Nino says. "And you paid for it, so you should have the other half! You can think of it as... erm... a sign of our bond! Yeah!"

You nod and accept the gift, taking the second bracelet. However, you quickly realize there was a bit of a problem.

The bracelet, made for the slim arms of young girls, would definitely not fit over your armor.

"Don't worry, I got an idea!" Nino giggles as she touches the bracelet with her finger.

And just like that, the bracelet begins to expand and stretch. Another wave of Nino's finger as the expanded bracelet over the wrist of your gauntlet before contracting again, the silver fusing into your armor like it had been forged that way.

"I think it looks great on you!" Nino giggles.

You ruffle her hair again and look up to the sky. Sol was starting to get low.

You tug at Nino's arm, letting her know it was time to go.

"Okay!" Nino nods and sidles up close to you.

You wait until you're past the city gates and well on the way back to the Monastery before lifting up Nino and letting her ride on your shoulders. The girl's done enough walking today, by your estimate, and sure enough, by the time you reach the gates of the Monastery, she's already fast asleep.

"Oh, hey." Morgan is there to meet you. "Finally back."

You nod as you gently slide Nino off your shoulders and cradle her in your arms.

"So you get anything useful from the Mages?" She asks, walking forward and gently brushing the sleeping Nino's hair, her tail wagging energetically.

Should you tell her what Elias told you...?

You point to Morgan, and then to the direction of the mountains. Then you start raising fingers as if you were counting up.

"Wait wait wait..." Morgan narrows her eyes. "You mean that... I'm not alone?"

You nod and then shrug. It was a distinct possibility.

Morgan is silent for a while.

"This... is a lot to take in." Morgan mumbles. "I'll take Nino to her room. You probably want to check on the others, right?"

Wait, where were the others, exactly?

"Naru and Niko are with Havel. They've been 'questioning' the prisoner. Not sure if he's talked yet. Didn't really want to stick around." Morgan sighs. "Seems like something you'd have the stomach for, though."

You nod to Morgan and gently hand over Nino to her. Morgan holds the girl close, a troubled look still clouding her face.

"Come on, Romulus." She say softly as the pup trots after her.

With Nino taken care of, you head over to the dungeon, where the Elven prisoner was undoubtedly being held. Outside the door, you could see Naru leaning against the wall, taking a heavy swig from her flask. Even from this distance, through your helmet, you could smell the alcohol.

"Yo." Naru waves clumsily to you. "See yuhr finally back."

You cross your arms, wondering what's going on. However, you're somewhat interrupted with an ear piercing scream from the other side door.

"Don't mind me, just shticking around to make sure that brute of a boss of yours doesn't just up and kill the prisoner." Naru sighs as she continues to drown her mood in drink.

Now you understood. Havel was using Naru's to keep the prisoner alive, allowing him to be a bit... looser in his questioning methods.

You put a hand on Naru's shoulder and give a nod. It was time for her to take a break.

"Oh no, I'm seeing this shit through." Naru sighs, but manages a slight smile. "But thanks for the thought. It really means a lot."

You nod and enter into the dungeon proper, and are met with the expected sight. In the center of the cell, the captured elf was tied to a chair, looking more like a bloodied bag of swollen flesh than an actual elf. Havel towered over him, his gauntlets covered in blood and the rest of his armor flecked with droplets of it.

Niko, meanwhile was lurking in the background, hidden in the shadows as she watched the events.

"...Ah, Templar." Havel turns to you. "I have to admit, this Elf here has some backbone. Hasn't said a single word."

"That's because they're all trained to resist those complete amateur tactics you're using." Niko rolls her eyes. "Trust me, my people have refined the art of information extraction to an art!"

"I'd rather not put my faith in the arts of a foreigner, no offense." Havel rumbles and turns to you. "Templar, would you like a turn?"

You step forward, cracking your knuckles. You were itching for a go at it.

The Elf, for his part, manages a defiant glare back at you. Well, he would be glaring if this eyes weren't swollen over. But still, you could understand the meaning.

Still, how to get him to talk...?

Eh this is kinda bad should leave the guy to recover if he's beaten like that time to use instruments. A hot iron some nail/teeth pulling. Or sink his head for a time in a little bit of water.

You rap on your armor a bit, knocking out some of the loose ash and soot still stuck in the crevices and cracks until you have an entire handful of it.

And then you forcefully smear the ash right into the Elf's face. Maybe he didn't like the stuff, or maybe he came to the realization that you were literally rubbing the remains of his comrades onto him. Nevertheless, the Elf finally cracks.

"You monster!" He snaps. "We will cleanse this these lands of your foul taint! Whether it takes one year or one thousand, it will be done!"

Well, it seems that worked.

"Hmmmm, good work, Templar." Havel rumbles as he steps forward. "What shall we try asking him?"

"Better be quick about it." Niko points out. "I don't think he's gonna be conscious for long."

You nod to Havel, who steps forward.

"What was so important about that Ruin you would pick a fight with the Mages?" He growls.

"What is buried... should stay buried." The Elf mumbles. "The sins of the past must never come to light..."

The Elf then slumps forward completely out cold.

"Damn." Havel grunts. "I suppose that is enough interrogation for today."

You turn to Havel and point in the direction of Eisenwand. Do the others know of this development yet?

"No, this is strictly Templar business at the moment." Havel responds. "We cannot make rash accusation without proof, of which this Elf here will be the only source."

"You sure it's a good idea to keep this under the rug?" Niko asks.

"As I said, this is Templar business." Havel rumbles.

Not enough evidence. This could be just a band of rogue elfs. Just like the 'bandits' in the forest. We need to find out more.

But maybe we should warm people about the ruin so the mages don't end up doing what all mages do.

You nod, deferring to Havel's judgment. This was a serious matter that would require some discretion, especially with Semiramis present within the city. You sense things would be very sensitive politically.

"I will have to report these findings to the High Marshal." Havel says as he strides out of the dungeon. "Make sure the prisoner is properly restrained before you leave."

"Right right." Niko sighs as she steps forward.

You look to Niko, searching for an explanation.

"Oh, you wanna know what's been going on, huh?" Niko frowns. "Well, uh, yeah. The past couple of days was just Havel wailing on this guy here, trying to get him to talk. But I've also noticed a lot of movement around the Monastery, too."

That grabs your attention. Surveillance?

"Pretty sure it's the Elves scoping the place out." Niko frowns. "I was certain I was discreet in getting this guy here, but then again, the may just be watching this place as a precaution. Enemy stronghold, after all."

Understandable, but troubling all the same.

"Well, if you want, I guess we can go out and, er, 'discourage' them from snooping around!" Niko gives a sly grin.

"All right!" Niko grins. "All we gotta do is wait till it gets dark, and then jump 'em when they start crawling out of wherever they're hiding!"

Yeah, sounded like a plan.

"Looking forward to it!" Niko's eyes gleam.

As the two of you speak, Sol drops ever lower, and shadows begin to fall over Eisenwand and the Monastery. It wouldn't be long now...

Considering the orc horde the Order is dealing with, I wouldn't expect a large force coming to help.

Maybe a few nuns, and knights supplemented by a bunch of new recruits for 'on the job training'.
