NEW PLAYERS WELCOME

Welcome to Gyrocite.

You play as an all-around "handy man" for an upstart company whose invention could change the world along with its partners. Your current job is keeping a crowd busy while you "covertly" stop a bunch of terrorist peasants.

Don't worry about catching up or trying to understand it all. Just play along

Previous Thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/1929406/

The crew has done well to keep the crowds distracted while they handle the would be bombers. Now they need to find the rest of them. On the other side Lirenis and Julien find themselves is pequilar situations

A quick start guide is there to explain general concepts. The full rules are here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hRb7fQuzeSfjKbbYNOWa6V1xWs3-CM9lKBBDkJFcQ8I/edit?usp=sharing

Don't worry about all the math. A character calculator is provided to make things easier here. Just make a copy for yourself. Sorry, can't give edit rights:

Although it's billed as a Skirmish this game is a full on TTRPG. Character creation is time consuming but rewarding. Train yourself and figure out your abilities by trading in your Merit Point for certain abilities. You raise Stats, or acquire PRQs with them.

To get in quickly. There are premade loadouts to use here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uRMvILWgQcC_R96y6GH7uUTRKu4DOMtjkt9DrbOL7nA/edit

Pick Fencers for decent tanking, Gunslinger/Brawler for DPS, or try your hands at keeping your fellow handymen alive as a Medic. If you try to make your own character, and I invite you to, there's a basic template to follow below

Also, you can get more updates on my twitter:

I think I should clear up some rules about GFEs. Turning on/off a GFE costs 3AP. Turning it off makes it immediately lose all charge and it must regain at 75% rounded up EN to start functioning again unless you have the PRT that changes that to 50% instead. GFEs won’t start working until the next Action phase so don’t expect to have a backup GFE work. This harshness is specifically to stop cheesy high JUP builds where you have 10 prometheus ready to protect you, or hot swapping GFEs to abuse the Aegis. Losing your shield will always make you very vulnerable even if it’s for a turn.

When a GFE is broken and is recharging I’ll go ahead and put an R next to the current energy to indicate its status so to avoid confusion.

The Fuchinzs eye Julien for a brief moment; sizing him up. Their eyes reveal a calculus happening determining if the Chrysian is an asset, an opportunity, or a liability. Finally the woman speaks. A noticeable accent colors her speech.

????: You are not with other Chrysians. What is it you want?

The man steps forward next to the woman: Jinhai you manners please. This is what they say is “chatting”. You with long hair.

Jinhai: Jing-jo he not with the other Chrysians. He sit with the Gyre.

Jing-ho raises a brow from the news: Very observant sister. May you be trying to make a better deal than Eldson?

" A proper greeting here would be to take my hand and shake it" he explains

"You are very observant it seems, come, let's move out of the way of those who would want to move around, for politeness sake"
Julien walks to the railing and leans on it casually
"You don't beat around the bush, I like that, saves time from being wasted, so I won't waste yours either, as a courtesy. I won't talk numbers now, but I can tell you that Eldson is already nearly a thing of the past, his assets are eroding and he's making one last gambit to keep his ship afloat, do you know he lost a RATHER import lab and some of his most valuable prototype weapons a time ago(the fool even had them lying unsecured in unlocked boxes out in the woods!) and his primary scientist works for us now too? he's a desperate man making deals he can't keep, making threats to those smart enough to let his aged plans rust and wither with him. And I can also say that that-"
Julien motions to the crowd of people screaming at the stage in the distance
"That is the future, my friends. A future where a humble man like me can kill things many times my size over, Eldson's cheap metal toys included, Im sure he mentioned those to you, and I'm sure I can arrange for you to see the piles of scrap me and my associates made of them with our technology, if you were so inclined, or even use a field yourself, think about it friends, make the smart investment."

Julien grins wolfishly for a moment, nodding his chin toward the chrysian knights watching the show
"Do you think members of her queens knights would be watching the gyre demonstration so astutely if there wasn't something so wonderfully *valuably* /enviable/ about it?"
Julien watches aleid fall with a frown as the crowd erupts into a final cheer before grinning whimsically to himself, and pushing off of the railing

"Haha, damn I knew I should have been on the stage instead, ah well, c'est la vie. Well then, since you don't like wasting time I'll waste yours no further and be going, unless you have any questions, that is."
Julien prepares to walk away, his eyes confident and sharp as he nods at the pale skinned people and turns his back to them

Samantha returns to her seat after speaking with her subordinates. It’s evident the day’s events have shook her slightly.

Beaker: Samantha dear are you alright?

Samantha: Yes professor thank you for asking.

Beaker: I wanted to tell you. Have you ever heard of Alan Mantin?

Samantha: Isn’t that the Airship mogul?

Beaker: Yes quite. I see that your technology is quite ahead of his and Eldson’s.

Samantha is surprised from the news: He’s developed a Gyre field emitter too?

Beaker: No not quite but it seems he’s been working on Jupimer Grav drives and he’s been able to make some strides in that technology. While you’re not a friend of Eldson’s I believe he may be profitable business partner. I can introduce you to him at tomorrow’s ball

Samantha is taken aback: Yes that would be wonderful! Thank you professor.

Despite the insane amount of delays and hiccups that only took 13 turns. Thank you all for playing. We'll continue on to phase two sometime this week. Please try to keep updated on the IRC. She pulled up her sleeves, the left one tearing off, then washed her hands. Struggled with the sink, couldn't find a way to turn off the flow, jammed the sticky tie into the pipeworked and hoped for the best then swung around and faced the door. Deep breath. Deep breath. As of now C+. You missed a critical objective due to a player leaving prematurely. You'll need to consider the roles that will and might be needed in any given assignment. The system gives you an inordinate amount of flexibility between missions. You can comfortably have 3 PRQs and still "main" a role such as support or DPS. I build the missions with a pre-determined loadout but I don't make it impossible to have some success.

>>2008866
Okay I'll continue to update twitter

Seeing as this thread is slowly dying now would be a good time to get some feedback. Here's just some things I noticed:

-While there was less to draw as this mission had way less action it still took just if not longer time to process turns because of the amount of dialogue and planning that had to go in to NPC interactions

-The "Occupations" have clearly defined roles but are able to accommodate shortfalls albeit at a diminished capacity

-

-The system works fairly well with PVP. Some things I'll consider next time:
>turns go through four "rounds". AP would be divided by four with remaining AP distributed at the earlier rounds.
>Initiative is determined by 1d24+MAR+VEN. 1 initiative roll for all rounds or a roll for each round.
>actions that use more than the allotted AP for that round "carry over" to the next.
>Guns receive a higher damage penalty than melee weapons from "tracking"

In other words if a guy has 18 AP and another has 13 ap each they will have four "rounds" where 18 ap guy has 5 5 4 4 and 13 ap guy has 4 3 3 3 for the respective rounds. Both roll a 1d24. While 18 AP guy has a certain advantage it's not 100% sure he'll come out on top.

Moving on here are some questioned I'd love answered if possible

How is the game playing for you? Are there any frustrations you have with the class? Please bear in mind this isn't the time to whine about not being able to do xyz. Or player A is better than player B because they got decent rolls and you didn't

What would you like to see more/less of?

Is it fun?
>>
>>2010628
May just be me, but it seemed that the social game was just emphasized to much. Leaving the battle focused char mostly to do little chores or the like. While i know that this mission was meant to be social focused..Or i just missed about every clue or intrigue thrown at gairan...I dunno, its probably just me, but it seems that everyone may have to grab a social PRQ, to at least get some gliding potential...maybe a general social prt? But even then that leaves specialized people to do the job waaaay better..
*shrugs*
Its probably just me in the end.

>How is the game playing for you? Are there any frustrations you have with the class? Please bear in mind this isn't the time to whine about not being able to do xyz. Or player A is better than player B because they got decent rolls and you didn't
Honestly can't think of anything to bitch about, game runs smooth and typically what I wanted to happen ends up happening, maybe some GM lectures On what would help you process could-you know- actually help you process
>What would you like to see more/less of?
>More
More wackey as hell characters!
MORE!
More interaction with the secondary (tertiary?) NPCs like Gerald, deacon, Benson, ect.

>Less
Life gets in the way and I can understand that, but the start-stop-start-stop really hurts momentum, maybe it's best to wait until you're certain you can run for a good few days uninterrupted after a chain of "life butting in" incidents, or have a "grace period" after a disaster where you let the game rest so you can just deal with life, instead of trying to start a thread and having it die? Just spit balling here.

>Is it fun?
I got a bit bored here and there during the course of these threads, but that was typically while waiting for other players to make their objectives happen, and patience is the best answer for that.

Overall I was engaged, and especially for these face/noble interactions I was wondering how to get through the messes you tossed at me, and delighted at how my stupidity actually managed to work(and hopefully translate to bold confidence), I understand that there's only so much you can tell me, but sometimes it did feel like just slightly too little to work on, however.

>Grade
Aw. Well, it was unfortunate that we had no one else to place inside the restaurant. The size and access restrictions of this map did make it difficult, but a fun challenge. (Resource allocation is hard.)
>PVP
How would this system handle actions of greater ap cost than available on a round? (Spotter, for instance)
>Gameplay?
So far, things look good. The system is flexible enough to let each player be whatever they want to be, and remain an effective contributor. I do worry that we are seeing more roles to be filled than we have players&prqs, but each time we complete a mission we have the opportunity to expand our bag of tricks.
>More?
Indications of enemy health. Or, more to the point, a better sense of how effective any given hit is on a foe.
>Less?
Life getting in the way of playing games, on both player and gm sides.
>Fun?
Yup. (The flavor text on the map amuses me)
>>
>>2011831
>How would this system handle actions of greater ap cost than available on a round? (Spotter, for instance)
you simply don't act until you've "paid" for the act

So if you were to use it and you had 14 AP and used spotter you wouldn't act until the last round with your last 2 ap.

Let's say we had two goons with 14 ap and 12 ap

goon A

>move NNWN (4ap)
>-@Passing Cut (2ap)
>swing vibroblade (5ap)
>-@Pinpoint focus
>attack again (3ap)

goon B

>-deadeye
>-aim +20% (2ap)
>fire shredder (6ap)
>Move WWNW (4ap)

rounds are going 4 3; 4 3; 3 3; 3 3

goon A uses 6 ap for his first action so he's so on round 2 he'll be at 2 ap for round two and still "acts"
goon B fires their gun along with aiming for 8 ap. Meaning that the first two rounds are "occupied" with firing the gun and they won't move until the third round.

so goon A's move and Goon B's shot are both processed but goon A get's their cut in before goon B moves. As long as you have a single AP left for the next "round" it's processed so their actions are sorted by how close they can manage these.

>This thread
The social part looked interesting and the shadow warfare was entertaining to watch. Not much else to say as I couldn't participate.
Oh, and subclassing prior to the mission is difficult when we have no idea what is actually going to go down.

>PvP
The PvP was pretty cool, but from a Fencer's standpoint not very encouraging. I may drop into the irc if you want a full breakdown.
Breaking the turns into four rounds should help with the issues.

That said, it WAS cool to watch.

>The game and my Class
In general the miss chance is annoying, but I can see that it is there to add some uniqueness to the class. Honestly the random chance involved in both attacking and parrying can frustrate me. I am not a gambler by nature. Thus why I play a Fencer/Tank.
Now, in normal combat the Fencer is a blast to play, though the timing on Parry attempts can be tricky to manage. The maneuvering abilites gained in {Fencing+} look fun to play with too.

Dynamos also look super fun, and it is too bad it basically prevents you from doing just about any else useful.
Oh, and prior to this fight I really thought that only the defenses needed the GFE charged. Lesson learned. There was no winning in that circumstance for me. (I have no idea where he keeps all that ammo.)

I find it difficult to give you just the right amount of information without ruining the entire surprise of a mission. I'm fine tuning that

PVP was never intended but I saw an opportunity for it to be feasible. Also I found it useful to really see how much abuse you guys can take. Pugs are still disgusting with the right set up and gunslingers are a consistent threat.

Thank you for the feedback.
>>
>>2010628

>Playing: Smoothly.
The system is internally consistent, and you have a good grounding in working out the cost of actions. I think the math is kind of beautiful, in a way.

It says something I can throw together a patently ludicrous build (Street Rat Engineer Medic Union Servant) and /still/ feel like I can contribute to situations, and for people who are less prone to being complete fools in chargen, it looks even smoother. The flexibility of PRQs being permanent but PRTs being changable is a very good touch.

>Frustrations
Medics appear a little ill-suited for their assumed task. There's something in the setup that prevents their functionality, and it's an interplay of AP costs to move, AP costs to "Medic", requirements of equipment + EQ costs + Supply stacking + teammate shielding + EN regen + lack of RES wounds, given the abilities of the former. There's also the fact that few people seem to take true "damage" - either their LI soaks, or their EN catastrophically breaks so bad in face of overwhelming force they take 8-12 damage and die.

The addition of some chemical trickery to the medic is welcome, and plays well. The real problem here is that your "true" HP pool as a player is your EN; the moment that's gone you're dead in the water in current conditions. Changing it into a "chemical buff first", "emergency triage second" class helps alleviate some of it.

>More
Is "Everything" an acceptable answer? This was fun. Struck a good balance between exposition / carnage / build up / world building / sudden violence.

>Concerns
I have them.
>>
>>2012831
>Concerns
Let me have them:

There's an interplay with [Competence] that I think becomes problematic, as the sources of stacking Competence increase with every new addition of class / item / prt.

Many small modifiers add up, and it skews the system baseline of what is otherwise interesting math. Examples:

A 2d3 cm brute is acceptable dangerous, and a good weapon for a sneaker, trading raw damage for concealability

A 2d3 cm brute + 20% prone + 20 % flank + 20% sidesweeper + 40% focused precision + maybe 250% servant backstab bonus is a 2d3 * 3.5 dmg weapon at 2 AP cost per attack. That's not so much "stealth weapon" as it is "nuclear strike to the back of the head".

The same applies more dangerously to people with a less inane chargen setup. You're seeing people stack aim + spot + prone + bullets + gunslinger or any variation on fencing / brawler / murder PRQs.

The same applies to social stuff (Dress + Street Rat + Mer? I'm at +10, and I'm not trying). Stealth (Prone + Servant + Clothes + Camoflage...)

You need to come up with a system that limits the total stackability of bonus modifiers to some hard metric, otherwise things will escalate beyond the capability of the math to work. You're sort of seeing it already, where what is meant to be trade-offs in DMG vs EN vs LI vs RES vs RE become >I attack once for infinite damage.
>>
>>2012834
I also have a minor system gripe, in that you have a lot of really interesting non-class PRQs that people could pick

Dowsing Rod! Sentinel! Check 'Em! Skittish!

etc

but because these only grant a single effect with limited application, they simply aren't as useful, relevant or interesting as say Dynamo Engineer. Compare picking between "Check 'Em" and "Noble". One gives you a random chance of fun crits, the other allows you a backstory, fighting, access to items, social manipulation, observation, infiltration. . .

I want to suggest you split things into PARTICULARS, PECULIARS and POTENTIALS / Quirks / something. Give people 1 of the latter for free at chargen, and specifically make them those "specifically limited thing". Then perhaps you can pay 5000 notes to acquire a new one, or a statpoint, or some combination of the two between missions.

This would also allow you to create new potentials without neccessarily needing to create an entire supporting class structure for it, as you simply slide them in under quirks.

This is relevant because I don't think anyone so far even has considered taking Check 'Em. Or Sentinel. Or Commanding Presence. Or Intimidating. Or Fighting Spirit.

They're all good, interesting traits, but they pale in comparison to everything else and this creates a situation where people grow erratically between missions because pickng up an entire new class unlocks a lot of combinatorical potential.

It would also prevent the kind of competence escalation you are seeing if mission rewards were +1 Statpoint + Notes, and 1 statpoint is then 1 stat OR 1 new "Quirk", while picking up an entirely new PRQ would indeed revolve around notes + stats + maybe a drawback. Example: Grenadier already costs 6000 to unlock + costs for grenades. We have 1 grenadier for this exact reason, and it feels absolutely appopriate. Advanced PRQs costing notes + statpoints was a really, really good move to cap the amount of sudden progress people make.

( More people having more reason to put stats into actual stats instead of new PRQs also mean your competence problem solves itself, as base hit rate is often xdy + stat, and +stat means the system stops needing so many +comp modifiers )
>>
Incidentally, with the increase in raw competence + combined modifiers + output damage + weapon effects, Skittish starts being the one "trait" PRQ that you really, really want as it offers a flat defense against incoming murderizing.

Suggestion:

Make it a normal action. Increase the cost to 5 AP. Make it hit >18. This means people can start actively defending against attacks with something other than "Parry", and means your doom-stack of competence isn't /as/ much of a problem because there's a mitigator at high cost. Then the Skittish Trait can improve that dodgy action a step.

Essentially, at the moment your system radically favors all out offense at the edge of your burst limit because defense options aren't quite up to par in the same way as a competent Gunslinger has ability to go dakkadakkadakkadak or a brawler uppercuts you into the stratosphere.

WORDSWORDSWORDSWORDS I'M SORRY
>>
>>2010628
People need more ways to respond to attacks in general. The ranged vs melee PvP was less interactive than the melee vs melee, since it basically reduced to 'does the melee character close the distance and take out the ranged character before they get unloaded on'?

In particular, since Fencers are intended to have a reactive playstyle, they should definitely have a response to getting shot (for instance, a PRT that allows them to parry bullets), like the Gunslinger gets in Tit for Tat.

With respect to defenses against melee, melee characters have parries, while ranged characters have the minor but inherent defense of being several tiles away to begin with. You might consider giving advanced ranged classes the ability to somehow counter melee attacks as well.

That said, you've stated that bare hands count as melee striking weapons. Are we then also able to parry with our bare hands, given the required PRT?

I'm not going to comment much specifically on my own class, since given your comments on the rolls, my fight with Aleid wasn't a good representation of our average abilities, and my fight with Serval was over too quickly to tell much - except that barring situations where I'm permitted to set up for ridiculous combos, it feels like a fair number of the PRTs are designed more for battlefield control than pure damage. Is this the intended design direction of the class?

I do, however, agree that a prt for dealing with melee attacks as a ranged weapon user would be nice.
