At this point, you don't really have much else to talk to him about. And you seriously need to get out of these clothes; probably should burn them for good measure.

Sun Woo looks like he has a few last minute arrangements to make, so he calls a servant to bring you to the baths. You left your belongings in the room with the Head, so neither you nor the servant have to carry them, and follow along. You do bring a clean pair of underclothes with you; can't forget those.

The entire complex is quiet, aside from you and the servant there's no one in sight. Considering who lives here, you figure that there'd at least be guards standing watch or something, but no there's just a calm quiet over the area. It's not entirely silent so it's not unnerving, it's just odd to you.

The bath's a lot larger than you're used to, though you're not sure what else you were expecting. There's some kind of giant bathing pool, something you've never seen before. It looks inviting, but time is of the essence here so you stick to a show you find off to the side.

You have to remind yourself several times to keep moving as the experience of having an actual bath after all this time is something you're not going to forget for some time. After what feels like several pounds of dead skin has fallen off you, you give your hair one last scrub and step out. The servant is gone, you're not surprised, but she did leave you one of those two-layered robes that Easterners wear a lot. Putting on your clean underclothes, you pull the robe around you, slide on your shoes, and leave the bath.

The way back to Sun Woo is pretty straightforward, though you imagine he's probably in the middle of something currently; he likely wouldn't mind if you wandered about for a bit...

Thinking about it, it'd be rather stupid to get lost here. Might as well just walk back to the room.

The scenery is unchanged from when you walked passed earlier, though you do feel a bit awkward in the robe; not sure how this is supposed to be comfortable at all.

Making it to the greeting room, you walk into to find another familiar face across the table from Sun: his son.

"I really have to go?" Jun Woo looks rather put off, likely at the fact that he'll have to attend some stuffy party rather than do whatever it is he normally does.

"Of course," Sun's smile is still there, though there is a bit of a sharpness to it that you're not entirely used to, "It'll be a good opportunity for you; you'll be dealing with these kinds of things in the near future, it would be smart to get used to them now rather than later on," His gaze flickers over to you, "Ah, John, welcome back. Your clothing is in the next room over," He points to a door leading out of the room.

Jun seems a bit happy to see you, though it's likely because his father isn't focusing on him alone.

"Thanks," You start to walk towards the door, grabbing your belongings, though you do stop and give a nod to the two of them before exiting the room.

This room is a bit less sophisticated, looking more like a simple storage area that someone threw up a screen in. Thankfully, your clothes are laid out on a table rather than on the floor so that's a good thing.

Looking over the set, you're a bit surprised at what Sun Woo got for you. It's a rather simple gray suit-jacket, white collared shirt, blue tie, black belt, gray slacks, and a pair of black dress shoes. Nothing too fancy or frilly, though you're sure it'll still look better than you do normally.

Stuffing your old clothes in your bag, you pull out your rapier and pause. There's the rest of your gear in here, though you immediately have to discard your armor; no way you'll be able to sneak that in.

You have to consider if you want to bring anything else to defend yourself with.

What's protocol for weapons at such parties, to the best of our knowledge?

If rapier could go with our attire, bring that. No holdouts, especially not the silenced pistol.

Also no armor means no !pipboy, right? We should make some sort of civil-appropriate case for our growing kit, but that's for somewhen else.

As for a case, you do have a toolbox.

> Just take the sword

Althought if Sun doesn't approve we will take it out. It's not that we don't feel safe here it's just the sword is already a part of our get up.
>>
>>1971035

Thinking it over, your sword should be enough to keep you safe; anything worse should be dealt with by the guards. You will need your gear if you're going to actually do your job right, so you throw your gauntlet and your Multitool into your Toolbox alongside the rest of your tools.

From there, it's a rather simple matter to throw on your attire. Whoever the tailor is, you'll have to thank him at some point because he did a rather good job. Pulling your tie up and looping it, you feel an odd sense of nostalgia from the feeling of wearing dress clothes for the first time in years.

Hell, the last time you went to a party was back in Westmire; was it Cassandra's birthday party? You don't remember it well, probably because you spent the entire time in an out of the way corner...

Shaking off the old memories, you grab your rapier and secure the sheathe to your hip and leg. Making sure that it won't jangle around too much, you grab your toolbox, belongings, and re-enter the waiting room.

Jun Woo looks like he's accepted his fate as his father has a rather smug look on his face. Both of them turn to look at you as you enter, a single eyebrow raised on both of their faces.

"Well," Sun smiles at you, "You certainly clean up well".

"Thanks," Is your dry response, placing your belongings back into the corner before turning to him, "I'll need this with me when I examine the armor".

He takes the toolbox with a nod, "You'll have when the time comes".

Walking over, you pause for a moment before awkwardly sitting on the floor at the table.

"Are you looking forward to this?" The son sounds like he's about to be tortured, looking at you with the expectation that you'll somehow have a way out for him.

Your response isn't a hard one; after all, Sierra'll be wearing a dress there... "A bit, honestly".

Jun's reaction is an absolutely aghast look, his face holding it for a moment before he sighs and drops his forehead against the table. The entire fiasco gets a laugh out of you.

"Have you ever been to a party like this before Jun Woo?" Considering how he's been acting this entire time, you're a bit curious at this.

The fact that he goes slightly pale at your question really, really catches your attention, "Uh, yeah... One. It was a while ago though..."

"You mean your eleventh birthday six years ago?" Sun Woo cheerily adds in from the side.

Huh, he's 17 then? Looks a bit older than that if you're being honest...

"Hey!" Jun looks rather off-put at apparently being outed, lightly glaring at his father.

"Don't worry about it too much," You wave to catch his attention again, "If you really feel out of place, you can always come hang out with me; I probably won't be doing too much until I have to look at that armor".

He scratches his head awkwardly, "Err... Thanks?"

"Not a problem. Though, if you really want to enjoy yourself at a party, you've gotta get a date; either before or during".

That last comment was offhanded at best, but Jun Woo freezes in place at your words. Sun starts laughing again, "John's right, Jun, you'll need a date for this party".

"No!" He immediately shouts out, looking distinctly embarrassed at his own reaction a moment after, "I mean... Ugh, just not her again..."

"What's wrong with Joo Yeon-Ha?" Oh?

This has to be one of the most blatant displays of attempting to change the subject, but you can let it slide. For now.

Giving Jun a look, you draw the rapier and hand it, grip first, to the young man. Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Sun Woo looking in apt interest as his son looks over your creation.

"Wow..." You can see as he runs his fingers along the metal, occasionally over where the Conductor material is, "This is certainly a unique design, never seen anything like this before".

"I made it in a day because I had nothing better to do," After a moment, you shrug at their reactions, "What? I was bored, wanted to test out what I learned how to do with what I already know".

"You already knew how to build a taser from the ground up?" Jun Woo doesn't look convinced at your explanation in the slightest.

He gets another shrug from you, "I learned how to previously, yeah. Though that's a rather long story, I'll have to tell it to you another time".

There's a moment of silence, then son turns to look at father, "Where is this guy from again?"

"The City of Airgrid, one of Shirahoro's biggest trading partners".

"And is every Westerner in Airgrid as insane as John here is?"

"No, I suspect John is his own version of insane".

"Ha ha, very funny," You give the two laughing men a frown, but little else as you can't really say much in your own defense. You did hijack a caboose not too long ago...

There's not too much time left until you have to leave now.

"At least I can practice my own special brand of insanity..." You can't help but mutter aloud, much to the amusement of the other two.

"Sun Woo, at least tell me that some idiot isn't going to be trying to smash the armor I'm supposed to be looking at to prove it's protection?" After a few moments of silence, the question comes to mind. Seems like a rather important thing to ask now that you think about it.

He smiles in his usual manner, "Don't worry about it, you'll be the only one running any kind of test on it; including the seller".

"Good," You sigh in relief, "Speaking of the seller, is he someone I should get to know?"

"Well," His smile slips slightly, "I'll be honest, he's not exactly the type of person I'd normally trust. It's part of the reason why you're coming along in the first place".

"To make sure you don't get swindled, got it," You lean back a bit as the last, and arguably the most important, question leaves your mouth, "And what's the drinking situation looking like for this party? I have a feeling I'm going to want a few in me at some point".

Your comment apparently cheers Sun Woo right back up, as he's got a full-out grin on display now, "Part of tonight's entertainment will include a few of the more well-known bartenders running the hotel's bar for certain periods of time".

Right, Sierra mentioned that she'd be doing that, "Anyone in specific to get a drink from".

"I'm not much of a drinking man, at least not anymore," He rubs his chin a bit, "But the two who standout most are arguably Shirahoro's best bartenders: 'Mr. Perfect' and the 'Glass of Gods'".

"Sounds fancy".

"From what I know, they're both rather strict on not getting their customers too inebriated".

"Now that just sounds horrible".

That gets another round of laughs, and the three of you enjoy some light-hearted conversation for a few more minutes.

After that, it's time to leave for the party. Grabbing your things, and making sure to tuck Sierra's present into your pocket, you follow the father-son pair out of their homestead.

Leaving the compound, you note that the sun is just beginning to set over the horizon. Guess you talked longer than you thought.

The walk isn't a long one, though you do note that you've gotten a few strange looks from people passing by; probably due to Sun Woo's presence more than anything else really.

Either way, before you know it you're at the place "Hotel Cardinal". It's a rather impressive building, right on the border of the Cloud and Water Districts. In typical Shirahoro fashion, it's a mix of Western and Eastern architecture and design; rather tall too, coming in at six stories high. At least Sierra isn't working in some dump...

Sun Woo and Jun Woo both enter ahead of you, citing some last minute preparations. You tell them you'll catch up with them in a bit.

Looking about, you don't see anyone else in the vicinity. Sierra told you that she was going to get ready with her friends from work, so she'll be around sometime later you suppose.

Either way, you've got a bit of free time now.

While your out here, taking a look around is probably a good idea. Nothing should happen tonight, but you've stayed alive this long by never actually taking those kinds of promises at face value.

The front of the hotel isn't too much to look at, a pretty standard Eastern style face that you're sure leans to a similarly styled reception area. Aside from that, there's nothing else around. There is a kind of side alley to your left, so you decide to walk over there.

This is a bit more interesting, as it contains a rather familiar face munching away on something while he's examining a side exit.

"Surprised to see you here, Gladiator," You call out as you approach, not wanting to have any issues with the man.

"Hmm?" He looks over you, still chewing on his snack, "Mmm... John, surprised to see you too. I'd ask if you're attending the party, but your clothes answer that question".

I'd rather shit didn't go down tonight" You're no where near prepared enough if shit does hit the fan.

"Nothing on our end," He doesn't seem too off-put by your question, "I'll be accompanying the Don around for the evening as his personal guard".

"So you are attending the party then," Can't imagine why else they'd be here.

Gladiator takes another bite out of his food before speaking up again, "And the auction".

"Buying or selling?"

"Both," Is his immediate response.

There's a pause as you think about that for a moment. "Alright... By the by, is Dutch around?"

Gladiator pauses, as if considering how to answer your question, "He'll be around, just not in the hotel".

"That's not real an answer, you know," You frown a bit at the dark-eyed man.

He just shrugs, "I can't tell you where exactly he'll be, operational security and all that, but Dutch and a few of our better guys'll be sitting on standby during the party. Anything serious happens, they'll be coming in to get the Don to safety".

So, Dutch is going to be just off-site incase some serious shit goes down...

"That's good, I think," You're not entire sure if you're alright with having a Genovese hit team breaking down your door, but at least you know it might be coming, "Well, let's just hope that you don't need it".

"See you around," You give him a casual wave as you walk by, looking down the rest of the alley.

"Actually, John," Turning around, Gladiator isn't walking towards you though he is facing you, "Archmage told me to tell you, 'You're right, there is something strange going on in the Earth District. I'll let you know if I find out more'. No idea if that makes any sense to you or not".

"It does, thanks," It certainly doesn't make you feel any better about things though. Actually biding the man goodbye now, you continue your walk around the hotel.

The rest isn't too remarkable either, mostly service entrances and side alleys; no one's around either.

Eventually, you make your way back to the front of the hotel. Time to scope out the interior.

The interior is quite impressive. It's a rather simplistic design, but that just makes the rooms feel that much more open and large.

The floor plan is rather simple: reception right in the front lobby, a set of stairs off to the side heading up to the hotel rooms, and several large rooms reserved for the party in the back along which are a handful of smaller meeting rooms. The room in which the auction will occur is even larger than you thought, with a second story balcony overlooking the entire affair.

From the looks of things, most of the guests haven't arrived yet. There are a few hotel workers running about performing last minute arrangements. They're too busy to give you more than a passing glance before continuing on their way.

All in all, nothing looks out of place; an observation that doesn't really make you feel any less uneasy.

The question is what to do now.

Really, there's not too much for you to do at this point. Unless you want to raise suspicion, there's little else you can do to scope the hotel out.

So, when faced with a lack of things to do, you go to your usual default: finding the nearest bar.

Along your quick journey, you note that a few more people are trickling in now. No one you recognize, but that's honestly a good thing with the type of people you know. Either way, you pass through reception without an issue.

The hotel's bar is located right next to what looks like a restaurant of sorts. It's strange to see a bar like this; you're much more used to the compact wooden style of the average street bar than this which is practically open air in comparison.

Behind the counter is a single young lady, methodically working on polishing a set of cocktail glasses. She's dressed up in a dinner vest and bow tie, probably company uniform, rather than a dress of sorts. Your approach doesn't go unnoticed, as the lady looks up and there's a slight frown on her face before she speaks.

"I'm sorry, sir, but the bar isn't open yet".

Your response?

"You sure I can't get a drink?" The sheer scorn in her eyes is amusing in its own right, "I'm joking; I'm not here to drink... yet".

She sighs, going back to cleaning the glass in her hands, "Unless you're waiting for someone, you might find something more interesting in Hall C where most people are entering right now".

"I am waiting for someone, as a matter of fact. You wouldn't happen to know a lady named 'Sierra'?"

This gives her pause, her eyes looking over you evenly, "Who's asking?"

"Oh, my bad," You try to give her an even smile, "I'm John, a friend of hers".

"John, John..." She looks to the side, pondering your name before her face lights up slightly, "Oh, you're that guy. The Artificer, right?"

"That's me,"

"Last she told me, you were cooped up in the Bastion; I'm surprised that you're here considering that," There's a single, raised eyebrow accompanying her statement.

You shrug; not much else you can do, "I managed to crawl out of the sweat and soot for tonight".

"Apparently so," She sounds a lot more relaxed now, probably due to the fact that you're not some random snob causing trouble at the start of her shift.

"She say anything else about me?" You can't deny you're a bit curious about this.

"She's said a few things about you; the most interesting one being that you're dangerous," There's a thin smile on her face, "I think I can see why".

"That is interesting," Frankly, you can kind of see where she's coming from, but for Sierra to flat out say it to someone is a bit odd, "Do you know why she said that?"

"Sorry!~" She exclaims in a sing-song voice, "Bartender-Customer Confidentiality; I'm sure you understand".

You sigh a bit, "Not sure why I thought I'd get a straight answer to that". Looking over the bar, you note that there's a lot of glasses and bottles of alcohol already out and prepped, "I know there's a few bartenders coming in tonight, you know anything about them?"

Her smile slips a bit, "You're asking about 'Mr. Perfect' and 'Glass of Gods', right?"

"Unless they're the only two manning the bar tonight, not really".

"Oh, right," She looks a bit embarrassed, "They're the two most people ask about. Aside from them, myself, Sierra, and the other Cardinal bartenders will be serving. There are a few others from some of the other major bars in Shirahoro that I know are coming, but that's all of them".

"Got it, thanks. Actually, I never got your name".

"Kyoko, my name is Kyoko. Stop by later, I'll show you my skills," She's got a calm smile on her face now.

Biding Kyoko goodbye for now, you turn back towards reception. More people are coming in now, so you go with the flow a bit towards where the majority of them are going.

That turns out to be the previously mentioned Hall C. There's a general air of chatter to the place, though you don't really see anyone of note around. So, wandering a bit more, you find your way to the meeting rooms.

"-s not a problem at all! I am honored to host a Councilman!"

"Please, Chairman, there's no need for frivolous formalities while it is just us".

"Says you! Hahah!"

Walking into the room, you find Sun lightly chuckling, Jun looking attentive but bored, and a third older gentleman cheerily laughing.

"Ah. Motomitsu, this is the man I mentioned previously," Sun motions to you as you approach.

"Hmm..." He looks you over with a slight grin, "Don't you think he's a bit too young to in the company of such old geezers?"

They laugh again while Jun just gives you a look that screams 'then why am I here?' to you.

while we wait for story teller a few ideas to make when we get back to the forge

1. 4 pronged spikes that are small enough for several to be held in the hand. we throw them on the ground and if the target is not wearing tough foot ware then they are going to get stepping on lego times a 100.

2. a grapple hook, pressurised air firing a hook connected to a length of rope that we then use our own upper body strength and arm muscles to climb and retrieve. or in combat situations makes a impromptu projectile weapon that can be retracted into the launcher. do not use the recoil function when climbing or it will rip johns arm off

On the subject of steam/magitech grappling hooks, the two different versions would be a kind of modified harpoon launcher and a arm mounted grapple launcher for Heavy/Medium power armor. Both versions will require an Aim roll for properly firing the anchor but since the mounted version will be attached to framework of the armor it is on it won't require a STR check like the handheld version will. If you fail the STR check, I'll do a single 1d100 roll and based on that result something'll happen. Thinking 100-51 is the hook being pulled out of target, 50-26 is the weapon being yanked out of your hands, 25-11 is the weapon taking a point of damage, and 10-1 is on of John's shoulders getting dislocated.

Maybe we could add a clockwork transmission gear to the grapple so when it retracts, it starts pulling slow and then consistently speeds up to it's max speed, thus preventing arm dislocation.

"Considering my occupation," The joke comes together in your mind, and you really can't help but tell it, "You're actually several centuries younger than what I usually work with".

There's a pause between the four of you as they catch on to what you're implying, then Motomitsu bursts out laughing, "Oh, Sun Woo, where did you find this kid?"

"He just walked into the city; I found him after the fact," He's got that same smile on his face, though it's a bit warmer than you're used to seeing while he's at work, "So, what are you doing here John? I figured you'd be out enjoying the party".

"Just figured I'd stop by," You shrug, "We'll have to talk again sometime, sure there's plenty to learn from you. But in the meantime, I'll just be borrowing this guy right here," Jun doesn't look too happy at you when your hand messes with his hair, but he does look rather hopeful at being able to get out of the current situation.

"That's not a problem. Enjoy the party, I'll send for someone to get you when the time comes".

"Got it," Giving one last nod to Sun and Motomitsu, you and Jun Woo exit the meeting room.

"Thanks for that John," He gives you a grin as the two of you make your way back to Hall C, "Thought I was going to die of boredom back there".

"You're welcome," You look around a bit, just checking your surroundings. Doesn't seem to be anyone around.

Jun's quiet musing as interrupted by you clasping his shoulder.

"Doubt and Uncertainty are perfectly normal feelings for someone in your situation; hell, you're not the only one who's had them," You pause here for a second, "But, the good news is that you and this gal are on good terms already. So just talk to her and don't worry about it too much".

"'Don't worry about it'," The young man gives you a smirk, looking a bit better than before, "That's the extend of your advice? Man, you're pretty bad at this".

You slap him across the back before laughing at his expression, "I don't want to hear that Mister 'Nervous because I've got a lovely gal to marry in the future'. But enough about that, we've got to enjoy this party!"

"And how are we going to do that?" Jun looks nervous again, though that's probably due to the fact that you've thrown an arm around his shoulder and are pulling him to the door.

"I'm glad you asked. We're going to the bar!"

The two of you separate as you open the door, beginning to make your way through the crowd now in the hall. There's not enough people to be a problem, though, so making it to the bar you find it still quiet. Kyoko's still here, just finishing serving a guy his drink.

Her expression lightens up a bit at seeing you, "John, figured I see your mug around".

"Alright, and what do you want Jun-Woo?"

The young man in question looks a bit confused at Kyoko's question, "You know me?"

"Yep," There's a simple smile on her face, "Never met you personally, but your family is rather well known as I imagine you know".

"Ah, well..." Jun looks around, clearly not used to being at a bar, "Give me something light, I'm not a drinker".

"Got it!" She cheerily replies, turning around to get your drinks in order.

There's a moment of quiet, during which you look over the crowd in the room. It's a good thing that you do, because walking right through the door now is a certain female elf.

Sierra's done up the nines, at least in terms of how she normally is. A simple, black dress hugs her form, a sleeveless thing that runs from neck to knees; the only thing keeping it from being conservative is that one side of the skirt has a slide up to her upper thigh. The entire look compliments her hair nicely, which has been simply pulled up into a single long ponytail and left to freely flow down her back.

Given how she's slowly looking over the entire room, she evidently hasn't seen you yet.

"I'll be back in a sec," You half-mindedly mutter to Jun, not bothering to wait for his reaction as you get up and slip into the crowd.

At some point, Sierra notices you as you approach. Her breath clearly hitches as your eyes meet.

"John... Ah, err..." She looks down at the floor, unable to meet your gaze, "You look... h-good..."

"You look good too," Walking up her side, you offer her your hand. After a moment of surprise and apprehension, she tentatively takes it in her own.

With the sensation of her hand in yours, the crowd around you falls away as you walk Sierra toward the bar. There's a simple, calm moment in this fragile point in time where just you and her exist.

There's a strange pang in your chest when it ends upon reaching the bar, Jun looking at you with a bit of surprise. Guiding your lady friend into the stool next to yours, you give the young man a wink from the corner of your eye and sit down.

"Jun, meet Sierra; friend of mine," You lean back a bit so that the two of them can actually see the other, "And Sierra, meet Jun; he's the son of my boss".

"Sierra! Oh my, you look amazing!" Kyoko sweeps in, practically fawning over her coworker.

"Kyoko..." She looks a bit embarrassed, but still happy at seeing her.

"John..." There's a poke to your side, turning around to see Jun leaning in towards you to get a more private word in while the ladies chat, "Where did you meet someone like her?"

It's a funny story...

You snort a bit in amusement as the memory comes back to you, "In a bar, ironically enough".

"Seriously?" Jun looks rather doubtful, though you don't blame him.

"Yep, happened a few months ago... Wow, yeah, it's been a few months at this point... Nevermind, regardless, I'd just gotten off this piece of shit's caravan in this backwater town about a week's travel from here. Naturally, I had no idea what I was going to do; never been to the place before and I stuck out like a sore thumb. So, I decided to find the local watering hole and see if I could find any work," Reaching out, you swipe up a tall glass Kyoko left behind for you. Taking a decent chunk out of it, you decide that she's got rather good taste in beer, "First place I went to I almost walked right back out of when I realized it didn't have a job board. That was when I turned around and found a certain someone looking at me from across the bar counter. One thing led to another, then several things led to another, and now we're here".

Your 'story' gets a slight glare out of the young man, "That doesn't sound like anywhere near the whole story".

"It's not," You look at your glass rather than at him, "And it's not the kind of story you tell at a party".

"You'll have to tell me it another time," Jun sips a bit at his drink, a pale ale.

"Sure," You turn back to him with a grin, "So, you know about me and Sierra now. What's the story between you and Yeon-Ha?"

"Yeon-Ha?" Turning around, Sierra's attention is now back on you two, "Who is that?"

Jun looks like he's about to try to deflect the answer when you speak up, "The gal this guy is betrothed to".

"Oh my," The elf has a small smile on her face, "Congradulations".

"T-Thanks..." The embarrassment is clear across his face.

"Well, come on now; how do the two of you know each other?"

"Ugh..." Jun downs another portion of his beer, "Our fathers are old friends, so the two of us would be brought along when they met up. We spent a lot of time together during those days, everything from playing to studying together. The last few years, however, we haven't gotten as much time together".

"What's her father do as a living?" You take another sip after asking your question.

"Well," Jun trails off a bit, "I suppose 'Adviser' would be a good word for what he does. It's a bit of a simplification, but that's it".

"He's a Consultant than," Sierra speaks up, looking past you to the young man.

"Yeah, that's the word".

"So, why don't you just plan something out with Yeon-Ha if you want to spend time with her?" You give Jun a single raised eyebrow over the lip of your glass at the look he gives you, "What? It's pretty obvious you want to be around her".

"Shut up, John," He takes another long chug of his drink, "Ah, well, I cou-"

"Jun!"

At the yell, the three of you turn to look at a young lady approaching the bar. You're not at all familiar with Eastern Formal Wear, but if you had to assume this would fall pretty far under the 'conservative' category. It works for her, though, dark silver hair framing a gently smiling visage complimenting her white dress nicely.

Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Jun with a slight flush on his face.

"Jun, it's been a while".

"I-it has! Uh...," He looks a bit off guard, glancing over at you for a moment.

"Go get 'em champ," You mutter the line underneath your breath as you stand up from your stool, looking up at the young woman, "Yeon-Ha correct? Jun here's said quite a lot about you, but we can speak another time; I'm sure you want to catch up with your friend here".

"Yes," Sierra stands up along with you, giving her a slight bow, "We'll have to speak later on".

"Hoo Hoo," She smiles at the two of you, "Thank you both".

Finishing off your beer, you give Jun one last grin, which he responds with a look of utter betrayal, before walking off with Sierra.

"I went along with it," She speaks up from alongside you, "But did you really have to leave him like that?"

There's a smile on her face, so she's not actually upset with you. Looking over your shoulder, you can see Jun slowly relaxing in Yeon's presence, even getting a laugh out of her with something he said.

"He's young," You start, turning back to your date, "But he'll be fine".

"You're talking like some old man," Sierra grins at you, "So, what do you want to do now?"

That's a good question; there's a few things you could do.

"Hmm... Actually, let's find a quiet corner; I've got something for you," You get a curious look, but no actual resistance as you guide her to one of the unused meeting rooms just outside the hall.

"Well, what is it?" Sierra separates from you a bit.

"No, no, no, that's not how this works," You wag your pointer finger at her teasingly, "This is going to be a surprise so you need to close your eyes".

"Is this going to be like last time?" That's a rather good question, considering the situation the last time something similar to this happened.

"Naw," Brushing it off, you give her a disarming smile, "There's no one here trying to kill us".

"Fine..." Sierra lets out a huff, though she does close her eyes.

Reaching down into your pocket, you pull out the inlaid Mana Crystal in the necklace you made. Taking a breath, you walk up to the elf and gently slide it around her neck, closing the clasp away from her skin and letting it rest against her chest.

"What...?" With a sense of confusion, she opens her eyes and looks down at your trinket. Her face lightens up immediately at the realization, "John! This is...". Right there is when she places a finger against the crystal, pausing as she figures out what exactly it is, "John..."

"Hey, I like function and form".

"John oh John..." Shaking her head from side to side, there's a bubble of mirth coming up despite her best attempts to suppress it, "What am I going to do with you?"

"How about we go dance?" There's a grin on your face as you offer your hand to Sierra once again.

Pulling Sierra along, you find that your luck is still holding: a portion of a hall has been opened up with a band just finishing their warm-ups. A few couples are taking the first tentative steps onto the dance floor. You move with the intent of joining them, when there's a slight tug on your arm.

Sierra is looking up at you, a hint of nervousness painting her features, "John..."

"Yes?"

"I...Uh," She glances between you and the dance floor, "I don't really know how to dance..."

"Oh, that's no problem," You give her the most reassuring smile you can manage, "I don't know much either, but I do know the ones in which the man leads. All you have to do is follow my steps".

There's still a bit of reluctance to her, but you tug her along to the dance floor; in the background, the band is off into the first movement. Turning to her, you help Sierra get her hands in the right places: right on your shoulder and left entwined with your right. Once she's oriented, you place your hand on her hip and lead the two of you into the dance.

There's a few stumbles to start, you have to rely on your stoicism to get through a heel to the foot at one point, but eventually Sierra manages to sync up with you. As you continue along, those old dance lessons, buried under years of memories and actually relevant skills, begin to correct and smooth out your movements. You and the elf move step in step, practically gliding across the floor. Once again, you feel that sensation of the world falling away, leaving only you, Sierra, and the beat of the band guiding your movements.

Sadly, you can feel the song entering it's last lines; so after a few more steps, you break apart from Sierra, only holding her hand, and give her a deep bow just as the band cuts off.

Standing up, there's a rather lovely blush spreading across her face. After a moment, you realize it's only partially from your actions; the other part is the fact that several people who you guess we're watching the entire spectacle are applauding you two.

Giving them a broad smile, you keep Sierra's hand in your own while you lead her off the floor.

Finding a small break in the crowd, she looks over her shoulder at you with an mixed expression on her face, "That was... rather impressive John".

"Want to meet my boss?"

"...what?" The elf looks confused as you suddenly speak up.

"Well..." There's a sheepish grin on your face, "I might have told my boss I'd introduce you to him tonight".

"And who exactly is your boss?" There's a bit of concern in her voice.

"He's-"

"Right here," Looking over, you do in fact see Sun Woo's smiling visage right next to you, "After that performance the two of you pulled, I couldn't help but say 'hello'".

After a moment of hesitation, Sierra manages to compose herself, "I'm Sierra, Bartender here at Hotel Cardinal".

"Hwang Sun-Woo, Head of the Main Bastion, it's a pleasure" There's a slight amusement to the man's grin as she freezes a bit at his title.

"I-I hope John hasn't been too much trouble".

"Oh, he's been more trouble than I could have ever imagined," His eyes flicker over to you, "It's not everyday that an out-of-town Westerner walks in and starts breaking expectations".

Sierra releases a mock sigh, "John, you just love causing trouble for everyone don't you?"

"Please," You cross your arms in front of you, "If I wasn't causing trouble you'd be bored out of your mind from the lack of excitement".

The three of you enjoy a laugh at that statement, enjoying the slightly more relaxed air.

"Well, we're heading over to the bar next. Do you want to join us Sun?" Might as well offer it, even though you're fairly certain what his response is going to be.

"Sorry, but I have a few other people I need to talk to," He gives you two a nod, which you both return, "I do hope you enjoy the rest of your evening".

With that, he's off; probably to go rub shoulders with someone else.

"So, we're going to the bar then," Sierra glances at you, "Seems like a bit of a unilateral decision on your part".

"Fair enough, where are we going then? Another storage closet?"

Shocked silence is the only real description of how she reacts to your words. There's a shit-eating grin on your face and you know it.

"Bar it is".

Making your way through the crowd is a bit harder this time. Mostly because there's just more people in the hall and crowding around the bar, but also because a few people definitely take notice of you. You give them a once-over, but you don't see anything amiss so you ignore them.

Just before you get to the counter, there's a bit of a commotion coming from the lobby.

"Sorry for being late!" Pushing through the crowd is a black-haired elf. Looking at him, he bears a striking resemblance to the one on your arm currently.

"So," Looking down at Sierra, you motion to the man, "That's your brother?"

"Yep," She just shakes her head, though it's mostly with mirth rather than disappointment, "That idiot is my brother Ryu".

"Ryu!" That there's Kyoko, giving him a slight glare as she works on an order, "You were supposed to be here an hour ago".

"I know, I know!" He places a box of sorts that he was carrying on the counter before turning and throwing his long coat off, "I just had to grab a few thin-".

It's at this point that his gaze snaps to you, or rather to Sierra, as you both approach.

"Ryu, you never change do you?" There's no bite to her words, only an amusement to her voice. A few people get up and walk off, so you grab two of the free seats.

"And you're still so cruel, Sierra," He does a rather good impression of fake tears, you have to admit. He glances over at you, giving you a look over, "I guess this is the 'John' in question?"

She pauses, not entire sure what to say you guess, "Yeah, this is him".

"Well, John, it's good to meet you. Sierra's said you're an... interesting man".

"That's one way to put it. And it's good to meet you, Ryu; not sure if I mention what your sister's said about you, they weren't exactly flattering" You add to the theatrics by leaning over the counter and faux whispering the end of the sentence.

"Sounds like her," Is his cheerful response. The two of you enjoy a laugh at Sierra's puffed up expression.

Unless Sierra's actively casting, or they're a kind of detector of sorts, it's hard to tell that she's a Mage. As for recognizing what the necklace is, the average person wouldn't be able to realize what it is at a glance but even if they did know what it is it is essentially the magical equivalent of carrying a dagger: it's a weapon, but it's not something that conveys the same kind of threat as a larger Mana Crystal.

"So, just how 'interesting' did Sierra say I am?"

"Can't tell you that," He smiles at you, "Good bartenders don't talk about their customers; its rather rude".

"Too bad," You sigh, putting your hands on the counter, "I assume that includes embarrassing childhood stories?"

"Hey!"

Ryu ignores his sister's outrage, thinking on your words for a moment, "Well, I suppose those didn't occur over a bar counter, so it wouldn't be a problem. But, let's save that story for another time; you're here for a drink yes?"

"Right," Smiling at Sierra for a moment, you turn back to the man, "I've heard you're a bit of a big shot around here; why don't you surprise me?"

"Alright, and I assume you want the usual dear sister?"

"Yeah, yeah," She doesn't look all that thrilled at the theatrics, though she's got the barest hint of a smile underneath it all.

Stepping back, Ryu begins going through the box he brought along, pulling out an elongated spoon, some kind of beaker, and a bottle of some kind of spirit. He grabs a few other things below the counter and starts working on your drinks.

You've visited many a bar before, used to beer and straight liquor, but this is something completely different from what you're used to. It's a few steps shy of a performance with how smooth and crisp his movements are. In no time at all, he's pushing your drinks across the counter.

Sierra's drink is whatever that spirit was in a short, stout glass with a single chunk of ice floating on the surface. Yours, by contrast, is a simple glass of some clear cocktail without any ice whatsoever.

Reaching out to your drink, you give it a testing sip. It's... a bit strange; you can taste the alcohol in it, but the liquid itself goes down like you're drinking water. Ryu wanders off to deal with another customer, leaving the two of you to drink in silence.

Or, rather, leaving you to drink. Sierra, by contrast, looks down into her glass sadly. You're about to speak up when you hear her mutter, "You didn't have to do that, dear brother".

Tilting her head back, the elf downs the entirety of her drink in one go, "Well, it's been fun, John, but I think it's time for me to help out. I'll catch up with you later".

Recognizing the change in air, you smile at her and let her go.

Finishing off your drink, you considering what to do now.

Might as well check in with Sun, you don't exactly have too much else to do.

Walking around the crowd, you keep an eye out for Jun and Yeon. You don't see them, but you hope they're having a good time.

The Councilor is a surprisingly hard man to find, though you guess he's probably a bit busy dealing with the political cluster fuck that's happening tonight. You still try to find him, but you're not getting anywhere.

Turning around, you're met with Gladiator practically making a beeline towards you. You manage to catch his gaze, and he nods towards one of the meeting rooms. The fact that he wants to have a private conversation with you don't give you any kind of good feelings; in fact there's a cold drop of dread sinking into your stomach.

Taking the long way around, you avoid the crowd as best you can and make to the room.

Walking in, you see Gladiator leaning against a wall. He looks up as you enter, but you waste no time cutting to the chase, "What happened?"

He pauses for a moment, looking as if to confirm that there's no one else in the room currently before speaking, "We don't know yet; what we do know i-".

"John?" The two of you whirl around, watching as the same man you were previously looking for walks right into the room, "And... The Head of the Genovese Mercantile Group's Personal Guard if I'm correct".

Sun looks between the two of you, not a hint of a smile on his face. Gladiator glances at you, probably not sure of how to handle the situation.

Now what?

"I worked for the Genovese back in Airgrid," You start after a moment of awkward silence, "I'll tell the entirety of it later if you want, but Gladiator here is a friend".

Sun doesn't look convinced at all, his eyes locked onto yours. A bit unnerved at how he's acting, you turn to the other occupant of the room.

"Regardless, tell me what's going on; there's no way it isn't urgent".

He pauses, looking from you to the Head then back to you, "Look... Something might be going on. I just checked in with the hotel guard; three minutes ago two guards failed to report in. No one's heard anything, no one's seen anything, but they're just gone. I took a quick look at their posts myself, but there's no sign of foul play at all. This could just be two idiots running off to fuck on shift, but I've been around too long to dismiss this".

Shit. Shit shit shit... Gladiator and Sun look at you, making you realize that you just said that aloud.

"I'll increase security within the hotel," Sun Woo eventually speaks up, "Do what you must to protect the guests". He stands up, walking over to the door, "Oh, and John? We will be talking about this".

With that, he's gone.

"I've put Dutch and the strike team on high alert," Gladiator mentions, already moving for the door, "I don't know what you're doing, John, but just keep your eyes open for me".

You're now alone in the meeting room, just stewing on your thoughts.

You could just walk back into Hall C and pretend none of this ever happened.

You could also take a walk over to where the guards went missing or to the roof to get a better look at your surroundings.

No, you can't ignore this; regardless of what comes of this you want to be aware of what is happening.

You've got a thought to go up to the roof, but you decide on head out to where the guards last were. Odds are if you're going to find anything it'll be there.

Slipping out of the party without notice isn't hard, considering that you're currently by yourself. Making it outside, you turn to the side street that Gladiator mentioned.

It's not entirely unlike the alley you were in earlier that day, the main difference being there's several closed down shops along it. There's no one out here, though considering just how late it must be you're not surprised there's no civilians walking around.

Looking about, you have to admit that Gladiator was right: you don't see anything suspicious or out of the ordinary.

There's a cold chill in the air, setting you slightly on edge, but you can't find anything tangible here.

Gritting your teeth, you consider what to do next.

If there's nothing down here, then you need to check out the roof. First, however, you need to let Sierra and Ryu know something's going down.

Unfortunately, you run into an immediate problem when you head back inside and find the bar absolutely mobbed; the two elves running around like mad fulfilling orders. There's no way you'll be able to pull one aside to tell them what's going on and saying that there's suspicious activity in front of all those people will only end badly.

You can't waste anytime here, so you duck to the side and, while no one is looking, slip into the cordoned off stairwell. Taking them two at a time, you quickly ascend the three stories. Roof access isn't an issue either, as you scramble up a ladder from the third floor.

Pushing yourself up, the first thing you note is that the wind up here is far worse than it was back on the ground, the cold sea air coming off the harbor cutting right through your clothing and nearly setting your teeth chattering.

But that vanishes entirely when you look up and see three hooded figures occupying one corner. As one, they stand up, look over at you, and then without a word all leap off the roof to the next building over.

Running to the edge, you can see the trio making their way towards the Fire District.

Your first response is to draw your pistol and fire. That ends half a second later when you remember that you're not carrying it. Keeping your eyes on them as they vanish into the night, you consider what to do next.

Sun and Gladiator need to know about this. So, despite your impulse to give chase, you turn and descend back down to the lobby.

Thankfully, it only takes you a moment to spot Gladiator. He also notices you, and the two of you head to the same meeting room as before.

"What's the problem?" Is his immediate question as you walk in. Guess he's as jaded as you are at this point.

Naturally, he doesn't take your refusal to spill the beans very well. He backs off a bit when a few seconds later Sun Woo walks in as well.

"I caught three hooded figures in all black on the roof of the hotel just minutes ago," That silences any immediate comments from either of them.

"They were just wearing hoods? Nothing else identifying?" The Head questions, looking at you intently.

You shake your head, "No, just hoods and robes. I couldn't see any weapons on them either, but with how baggy their clothing was that doesn't mean a thing".

"Where are they now?" Gladiator speaks up, his arms crossed in front of him.

"Ran off towards the Fire District," You turn to him, "They were taking the rooftops, so I didn't bother trying to follow them further. I then came right here".

Silence fills the room, no one speaking as you all mull on recent events. Sun breaks first, beginning to walk for the door, "I'll notify the guards. Keep in mind that the auction is about to begin; John, you have about an hour before I'll need you for that job".

With that, he's gone.

"I'm going to update the strike team," Gladiator pulls out some kind of mobile device, getting ready to speak into it.

Could it be the three were the guards to begin with? Slipping out of stations and putting masks on? You've got an urge to go out and investigate what's going on, but if anything is going to happen it'll happen here. With that in mind, you bid Gladiator good luck and leave the meeting room.

Right as you step out into Hall C, one of the guards makes the announcement that the auction will be starting shortly and that anyone wishing to either participate or watch should head over to Hall A now. You are a bit curious at what'll be for sale and this'll probably be your chance to relax a bit.

So, you follow the crowd over to the relevant hall and take a seat. There's one of those colored paddle things with a number on it underneath your chair.

The auction starts off pretty slowly, a few people who you guess are artisans are selling off paintings and sculptures.

Considering you have no interest in buying them, you take the chance to inspect the crowd for anything out of the ordinary.

Looking around, you actually spot Jun and Yeon sitting together on the other side of the room. Seems like they've really warmed up to one another, Jun in particular looking far more at ease than he was before. Guess you didn't have to worry about them after all.

Turning back to the stage, you're just in time to watch the Don walk out with a box in hand.

"Ladies and Gentlemen!" His booming voice quiets down the audience rather quickly, "We here at the Genovese Mercantile Group in Shirahoro are proud to have been producing and trading quality products since our branch's inception three years ago. Since then, we have made great strides to bring wealth and prosperity to this fine city. However, those three years of progress pale in comparison to what I shall be unveiling tonight".

That declaration gets a few murmurs out of the crowd, the mafia boss clearly enjoying himself as he opens the box with deliberate slowness. It's not the same, but you can clearly recognize the influence of those computers you worked on months ago in the design of what he's pulled out.

"Thanks to the ingenuity and dedication of our companies' brightest minds, we have created a computer system that surpasses any other out on the market currently! As I speak, the first shipment of these units are being sailed out across to the Western side of the continent; it will be available for order here in Shirahoro in four days. But!" He smiles broadly here, looking over the people present, "I have six of these units with me tonight! Starting bid is 5 gold pieces!"

There's a silence from the crowd as people glance about from one to another. That's suddenly broken when someone shouts out a higher bid. After that, it's a race of people attempting to outbid the other, quickly going well out of your price range.

All the while, the Don is looking on the proceedings with barely restrained glee, which only grows as the second unit's price skyrockets like the first's. Seems like he's definitely taken the spotlight of this event.

Taking a breath, you walk right up to the male twin and sit down. He looks up and smiles at you.

"What can I get for you John?" For a moment, you almost envy how calm he sounds.

"Something without alcohol," That got his attention, though he doesn't waste a second before he's conjuring something up. After a bit, he slides something that actually looks like it's got alcohol in it across the counter.

"You've been a bartender for some time I assume, Ryu. You ever get into a bar fight?" Grabbing the glass, you pull it towards you like you didn't just ask some obsurd question.

Ryu looks like he ponders the question for a moment, "I don't believe I have".

"Perhaps I should rephrase my question then," Pulling the drink up to your lips, you whisper out your next line so you know no one else hears it, "Are you armed right now?"

There's a silence as you take a draw of your soft drink. It tastes surprisingly well for something without a punch. When you place it back down, the man is looking at you with a neutral expression.

Leaning forwards a bit, Ryu puts a fake smile on, "What's the real problem here?"

"Dunno yet," You return his gaze without a problem, "But I'm only one guy, can't be everywhere at once. I need you to keep an eye out" You flick your eyes over to where Sierra and Kyoko are laughing cheerily.

Ryu just nods, apparently getting your message. There's no other words between you two as you slowly finish up your drink, taking the moment of calm to relax.

Sadly, the drink eventually runs out, and you step away from the counter.

You're pretty much out of time currently and, when you turn to leave the area, it's confirmed when a guard tells you that Sun's waiting for you in the same meeting room you found him originally. Wasting no time at all, you head straight there.

Entering without fanfare, you find that it's just you and the Head in the room.

"You called for me?" Keeping your tone as professional as you can, you walk up to Sun.

He looks you over evenly, "I did; we'll be making the transaction shortly".

Looking about the room, you can't help but raise an eyebrow at the lack of any seller or armor.

Sun just sighs a bit, "I told you that the seller was a bit... eccentric. So, we'll be doing the deal out on the auction floor".

"You're joking".

"I wish I was," He looks off to the side, his mouth a thin, straight line, "Apparently he's not too happy that the Genovese Mercantile Group stole the spotlight of the night; he wants to have his moment of attention".

"He sounds like an idiot".

He gives you a look, but doesn't attempt to refute your claim.

After a moment, he stands up and motions for you to follow. Based on what you know about the general floor plan, you're essentially heading to the 'backstage' of the auction floor.

It occurs to you that you're alone with Sun, now might be a good time to ask him something:

"I'm guessing you've got Jun and Yeon secured?" You know how badly your question could be taken, so you try to keep your voice as neutral as possible.

"Of course," Sun doesn't seem too concerned with you, "Yeon-Ha's father would have my head if anything happened to his daughter. They're in one of the meeting rooms together currently".

"You stuck the two of them in a room alone together?" There's a bit of humor back into your voice, "I'm sure Jun wouldn't try anything, but they were looking rather cozy when I saw them earlier".

For some reason that's what gives him pause out of this entire conversation. He looks like he's about to say something, but that right when you make it to backstage.

The man who you assume is the seller, given the way he just reeks of money; from the assortment of rings on his fingers to the two ladies hanging off him he might as well just be throwing coins around.

Sun Woo falls on the sword of having to talk to the stupid bastard, while you have a nice gentleman hand you your Toolbox. A quick check tells you that nothing's been touched.

Aside from that, however, you're struggling to understand what it is you're looking at.. The fact that you're unable to simply start cutting open the armor plating to get to the interior doesn't help you at all.

It's right then that the curtain rises and the sell starts making his "I'm not bragging at all" speech. The whole thing just screams idiocy to you and that frustration forces you to look away from your work.

"So, how does it look?" Sun walks up beside you, looking over what you're examining.

You, however, just shake your head, "Can't give you a conclusion yet, just give me another mi-".

It's at that point that you see a dark shape smash through one of the second story windows. There's a moment where time slows and you can see that dark shape heading straight towards you.

Or rather, Sun's completely exposed back. Without thinking, you leap to your feet and shove the Head out of the line of fire. With a look of surprise, he doesn't quite process what's happening until he impacts with the stage floor under you as you throw yourself on top of him.

Your assailant slams into the space you were just moments ago, rolling with the impact to come back to its feet.

And you really mean it, because it doesn't stand up straight adopting a more bestial slouch. Following him comes one of the hooded men from the rooftop, who lands with far greater grace and stands with a sense of poise that is severely lacking from the other two who follow him as well. The fact that he also draws a thin curved sword from his robes also distinguishes him from the rest.

But that's entirely ignored by the audience, who all watch in horror as one of the shambling things' hoods slide off. Sickly white eyes with no pupils and horrifically sharp, elongated teeth completely ruin an otherwise perfectly average human male's face. For a second, there's only the sound of harsh breathing and your rapier flying into your hands as you try to get Sun to his feet.

Then, the screaming starts.

> And that's where I'm ending things here for tonight. Worry not, we will be continuing from here tomorrow in a new thread. One that won't be semi-abandoned because of midterms. See you all then.

Give Sun a very knowing look as he gets on his feet. Temporarily equip as much of the armor as we can in the time it takes to roll initiative.
