/qst/ - Quests

As the dropship rumbles though the sky, the mid flight peanuts and briefing comes into play as huds play the commander for the mission. "Commander Morrison here." He barks over comms. "The TE rep couldn't be here for the briefing, So you pilots will have to deal with me." The pop up of his voice line is moved to the side to show a picture of a desert landscape. "This may not look like much, but under this sand the assumed main site of reddit's research into the creeping plauge that is affecting south america. Now due to GI fighting nearby, local TA have been lured off and forced reddit to hastily abandon their lab. Now we know they didn't get everything...." The sceen shows another pop up of a convoy of reddit suits and drones being fired at from AC forces. "But we know their lab must still be in there as TE tells us they couldn't have moved the samples with their convoy." The screen returns to the desert landscape with a holo projection of what looks like a termorsense scan of the base. "We need you to get into the hive like structure of the base and get the samples so TE can do their own work on the fungus. They tell us reddit has something important about them, and that's all I care about. ETA is about an hour. Land and get the job done!"

As the dropship lands outside of the what you assume to be the area of the base, the opens to a vast expanse of nothingness. "Oh. And while you might have not want it on you." Morrison speaks. "I'm being told it's actually some kind of blob thing that can infect suits. Don't let it touch you." The first issue you notice is that while your HUD shows where the entrance is, Yet it's low incline into the ground and slight elevation below it. it's covered in sand and barred to you. A terminal next to the door. The wind howls across the bay of the dropship and the sand threatens to get everywhere......

Sorry I thought you posted sooner.

>>2019509

Thermals don't show much on the door. However the floor and sand show some heat in the camera system that is at the doorway. Termorsense and the recon data shows that there is armor covering them.

>>2019513

ASS shows slight radioactivity on the floor and around the door. The levels and scanned half life of the isotopes show it was used for cleaning purposes.

Radar shows the area is clear around you. And that a weather balloon up high already might have scanned you from it's own radar.

Scanning with radio however gives you the automated radio station of reddit. Currently it's playing a sad moe song from some anime from before suitfall. However the taste seems poor to you. Maybe lucky star if you ever watched it? You can tell however it connects to the network's public servers however with spyware.

>>2019538

You however get a full picture of the base. 6 levels with a wide area around it. With a very small cavern around it from the mining of the area for resources (you feel snug if you didn't have burrowing.) Trying to poke the walls however shocks your weapon and show the walls were made to prevent you from simply burrowing in. You do however find maintenance ports you can poke your worm port into if you wish. Terminal seems to have access to the reddit civ level wifi with it's password of PASSWORD, with the others locked with higher access. ASS shows that there are holes everywhere in the cavern. Those worms where a blessing to be removed.

Plugging in you already noticed the hostile AI and Suit on the line paying attention to the scans being thrown about and the fact you where in a honey pot. Breaking out into a separate network, you notice the maintenance ports have already been sealed on the inside, and that cutting though would take time and be noticed, but with the data from the network.... Possible. You can't tell where the target lab is, but you think there are doors on the top where everyone else is, and the bottom where there is a small industrial and mining center..... The AI has not noticed your presence in it's network yet.....

As you enter in, you first notice how that the cameras in the room are swiveled as well, but not looking at you yet. After that is the fort sized elevator system that is across from you in this level.

While you can't really have enough time to be calm enough for take 10 systems, you are calm enough to get that general info while avoiding the cameras. You find there are four levels of Wifi, each more encrypted then the last. "What is this?" Marauder lowers his weapon as he turns to the guard, weary "the things I do for my job" contempt radiating from his posture.

"Well, it looks to me like the situation is: 'I have a gun, and also I just saved your life.'"

Reloading his metalstorm offhandedly as he talks, he goes on.

"Now, I'll level with you, I'm not actually here for you. Your bosses sent me and him here because apparently someone screwed up and neglected to recover everything that wasn't nailed down, and they couldn't spare any of their own manpower, so they get out an emergency burst transmission about this with a very tempting payout on it and that was our lot."

Done reloading he lowers the gun completely.

"It looks like you got left behind too. Sucks, but also not really my problem. I'm here to recover the stuff and stop AC from getting their mits on it-"

He cocks his head pointedly at the blaring alert alarms.

"-Which it sounds like they're working on. So!" He leans in; "Here's your options: You can help us do our job, and we'll throw you a bone and watch your back pro-bono till we're all out of this, *or* you can make all our lives harder."

"What'll it be, Baul?"
>>
>>2020394

>Right. Forgot to mention how much damage you took. And I did not notice the tesla Collider as well.

As you dodge, your weapons and tactics go off as planned. Before the tesla collider goes off, two drones already fall for that gambit and shoot each other. Then As the TC goes off, everybody but you takes the EMP hit and the drones all limp and stop dead in their tracks. the robotics line stops for the moment, and no drones are being made.

>>2020406

You move out of the way, and the drones sneak into the room with no issues. Inside you see teir one weapons and terminals everywhere. You see lockers and everything that marks a normal security office except for the lockers. You see Baul's locker there.

>>2020429

As you fire and hit the line, breaking it while it's down, you notice the drones firing at you stop from the EMP blast. Your suit functions fine because of FF protocols, but you can't say the same for anything else near you..... You notice the command room for this area was separate from the blast....

>>2020437

Baul sighs as even in his suit you can see him relax. "Right. Of course they didn't send a rescue party.... Well I can work on those terms...." He then goes back to the elevator panel and presses the 4 button, causing the floor to lurch. "I don't know how long we have since AC never backs down... And I'm surprised that one suit did..... But the warning is still going off so they must have gone into the basement... I'll work with the odds that you'll help me if that gets me away from AC."

He looks at you as the elevator slows down

"But whatever you do, DON'T let the samples break. This shit will turn you in a second into a monster. I know that from being the only real security here. I don't know what this stuff is, but there are enough samples to fit in a suit storage space."

As the door opens the suit shudders. "Just DON'T get shot either. That never ends well with how those containers work. And M.O.D.A.C.K is going to fire on us as soon as we try and take this stuff away from the base because you don't have a code to let it know I or it can leave."

This will be after you break though the rest of the facility. Deep in the lab there is the A.I's room labed. M.O.D.A.K. "Modular Operations Dynamic Amniotic (brain) Kotainer."

After it's turrets are broken and it's core left defenseless, it turns out to be a brain with a brainwave harness stuck in a life support machine jar.

It would work to a degree. Sadly whatever person they where is gone, and only the new A.I. owns the mind. Takeda would spend the next many weeks before the deployment in converse with this curious AI out of a human brain.

In a way they were polar opposites. He was a person who lost his brain but retained his mind, and MODOK had retained its brain but lost its mind.

I would feel remiss not to share this piece of perfection that Boat made after the mission.

Oh, and since it was never explicitly stated here's some clarification: the pair of us mercenaries knew going in that we were working on behalf of a client who wished to remain anonymous and who wanted the samples for themselves, so we inserted ourselves into the squad sent on this operation with the intent to hoodwink or otherwise betray them and steal the samples for ourselves.

Here's a brief bit of post victory RP that followed the mission:
https://pastebin.com/87bn7n7M

Also in case anyone reading this later is wondering what became of Baul, we got a bunch of offers from various parties for him (most wanting his head for generally being a traitorous weasel), but we eventually elected to turn him back over to the Armor Corps as a way of smoothing things over with them.

Not for free of course, we collected the bounty on him first. We have to maintain SOME standards.
