During the night, something goes bump.

You wake up to the sound. You have no indication of the exact time, but it's still dark out. The sound came from outside your room. Just outside your room. You presume it's Viliga going to the bathroom or something, as your room is right next to his. However, you decide to check on it just in case. You open your door and check out into the hallway. There's nobody there.

I must've been imagining it, then.

You go back to sleep.

In the morning, you help to cook breakfast again, although not quite at the same amount of overenthusiasm, then Lelestzam takes you to the study. She shows you the first page again, the one with the full list of character segments. She goes down the list on the right:

Then, she pulls the beans back, and gives you a good number. You count through them, and there are fourteen beans. She isn't saying anything, so it looks like you'll have to try and say how many there are.

She puts the beans away, then opens her book again. She flips to a page with a drawing of the sun, the moon, and the stars.

"Om. Vumon ze bong ke, hajebshia." She closes the book. She stands, bows to you, and leaves the study. However, as you're preparing to leave as well, you notice she left a different book behind. That book looks somewhat old, and has a somewhat long title. Observing the front, you also notice a small circular imprint on the bottom left corner. Inside it shows many of these patterns, drawn in great detail on the pages. None of it makes sense to you and you're not sure what it's for, so for now you decide to keep the book and return it the next time you see Lelestzam.

You leave the study. The castle courtyard is completely dead. Everybody who is there seems to be completely engaged in their hobbies or within their quarters. Out of curiosity you walk to the front gate. It's left open, and the guards merely stand at attention when you walk near. They don't try to stop you from leaving. It seems you have complete free reign at the moment. You are able to explore Wanjish, or you could use this free time to interact with one of your cohorts. You decide to:

Despite the freedom you've discovered, you decide to spend your time more productively with Hflei and Vanrir. Training with these two has so far proven to be the best way for you to build your strength, which you will need if you are to slay one of the devil's generals. You make your way to the dojo and sure enough there they are, sparring. They end their match and bow to you. This time, instead of a sword, they give you gloves and start trying to hit you.

They slowly bring training swords down toward you, and allow you to push against them with your hands. The very first swing is taken by Hflei. You push against her sword. It hardly moves at all due to her strength of grip, but then Vanrir comes and moves your hand along the blade, letting it rest in a different position along its length. You try pushing again, and to your surprise you have complete control over it. Hflei lowers the sword. Vanrir swings at you this time, and you attempt to hold it at the same position as with Hflei's. However, this time you cannot move it at all. She takes special care to point out Vanrir's hands. They are holding the sword slightly differently than how Hflei's were. She moves your hands to another position on the blade, and again you have full control.

They show you another advantageous location with a third hand position, then alternate between them as you block their swings. You learn the names of the hand positions, "Akobes", "Kakobes", and "Gakobes." They don't show you how to hold the sword in the three positions yet, as the remainder of the session is spent balancing the sword on your finger again. Your stamina had increased since last time, you've nearly doubled the amount of time you can hold the sword on either finger.

The session ends with bows all around, then you give them the fist forearm gesture and walk off to the courtyard.

I should really learn what that's called, pretty soon I'm just going to start saying I'm fisting people and nobody wants that.

What you find in the courtyard is not the usual peaceful scene. There are six or seven...

Reporters? Well I mean, they do have recording, mixing, and radio, so I suppose it's not so far removed, but the cameras...

Your history has led you to be severely camera shy, but you can no longer allow that to influence you or prevent you from performing your duties. You're a princess, god damnit. So, instead of hiding your face or running away you put on a smile (you're not sure if you're genuinely happy about pushing beyond your own shortcomings or if you're just forcing it), and give a big wave to the journalists. They take pictures of you, then start walking up. It seems they want to ask questions, which is going to be a real problem given your disposition. You try to think of a way to deflect them, and still get them their story...

...Food! I can bake them something, they'll get a story about the princess who gave her uh...his belligerent poperazzi food!.

You beckon them to follow and you hop to the kitchen. You rush around looking for ingredients, anything. If you're doing this, it's from scratch. The only things you even know how to use here are katchi and faio fruits.

A pie, maybe? Jesus... Alright this is happening.

The dough was easy enough. Flour, water, salt, and butter. You shred and mix the katchi skin in with the dough as well. You mix the katchi fruit and faio for the filling. You roll it flat, line a baking pan, scoop the filling, then layer and weave strips of dough on the top. Into one of the many ovens it goes.

Oh, I didn't think this through... Now what do I do, they'll want to talk to me while it's in the oven!

You reluctantly turn around, but rather than faced with a rabid mob of reporters, they're all calmly waiting, and you see Katchi and Viliga standing behind them. You give them a smile, and they take it as a sign that you’re okay with a couple more pictures. They each snap only one or two, then begin chatting among themselves. Katchi and Viliga jump into their conversations as well. For now, it seems like you’re over the hurdle. When the pie is done, you offer them more pictures of you holding it, then you slice it up and give one piece to each reporter. They seem to like it. When they’ve all finished, the come to you, thank you with the same phrase used by everyone the previous morning, and leave giving you various friendly phrases that sound like goodbyes; “Vitjido d’ vitjido moiche eu”, “Bong nom”, and others. You follow them to the gate and give a final wave as they walk back into Wanjish.

That wasn’t actually so bad. They all seemed very friendly.

Free of reporters, your time is once again yours to do with as you please. Will you

You decide to explore this city while there's still daylight. You know a little about the layout from when you came. What you've decided is south is where you came and the bridge which you first crossed. When you were taken to get registered at the adventurer's hall, you were taken west. The road branched many times, but you remember the way. Just beyond the hall is a busy district of town. There are dozens of shops dedicated to all manners of goods, and another huge bridge leading west off the island, and there's still yet more to this section of the town that you didn't get the time to see. Your knowledge of the city's layout has expanded, and now you have the ability to visit the shopping district during free time. You will have to explore more to access the remainder of the district.

While out and about, you spot the balded head of Viliga in and amongst the crowd. He spots you as well, and calls you over. When people see you walking with him, they seem to be interested, but you go undisturbed. Viliga leads you to a shop you passed earlier. He takes you inside. Viliga appears to know the owner, and the owner him. As with most people you’ve met so far, they seem to be on friendly terms with him. “E Kaliwa, vumo, detzu ensœ sem t’ nom he. Semhe ithon jesi dhezh.” Viliga turns to you, “Chaz, vumon bancheu Kaliwa.”

You smile and wave.

“E, jesdh… hrelao œ? Hajebshia, dubong moitze. Fotzhi, fotzhi.” You follow Kaliwa to the back of the store. There, he looks you over, then digs around in several chests and drawers. He presents you with four items. In front of you sits a small sword, a bow, a stick, and a dagger. You pull out your pockets, to show you have no money.

Viliga grabs your shoulder gingerly but firmly, then grabs your hand and places a small pouch of coins in it. “Vumon kedi yuzha. He hinsa. Nanif gemishu.”

Looks like he’s buying, in which case you get to choose:

Oh that's a wand isn't it. That's totally something a fantasy world would have, right?

Kaliwa nods. "Nglao d' kobe, chenhe gemitzu cho f' atatzu. E, yiposœ œ. Kiro golotchi wech."

I think he just said the price... Golotchi? A, ka, ga, o, ko, okay so six hundred.

You open the pouch that Viliga handed to you. Inside, there are various coins, all inscribed with the symbols for the numbers. Lotchi was the easiest to remember, just a circle, so you find six coins with the circle symbol and hand them to Kaliwa. He seems satisfied, and lets you pick up the stick.

Oh that's a little disappointing, I was expecting some kind of jolt of magic or at the very least a buzz, hey why is everything upsi--

When you wake up, it is late at night. You are back at the castle, in your room. You have a bad headache, and your ears are ringing. Ti is sitting in a chair next to your bed, reading.

"Ti?"

When she notices you're awake, she hurriedly closes her book. "E, Chaz, amoitzu!" She rushes toward the door. "Aithonze delsa!" She returns about thirty seconds later with Viliga in tow.

"Venbimija, Tits. Katchi gegezhu."

"M."

"Chaz," says Viliga, "ichinthen f' atasu no?"

Although you can't understand his words, you can hear the concern expressed by them. You sit up, and although it causes you to be slightly dizzy, you are perfectly fine.

"E, bong ke. Mœn yensa?"

You nervously scratch your head and laugh, "I don't know what the fuck that means Viliga..."

He does the same, "Sanasana..."

Katchi enters the room with Ti, carrying a medicinal bag. "Banhe amoitzu no?"

"Om. Sem-- E Banhe ichinthen. Mœn ensœ?"

Katchi nods in response to Viliga. She takes out a flask from her bag and hands it to you, "Vumon gaitho yuzha."

You take the container and drink, it's water, and it tastes really good right now.

"Katchi, sayi nani ke no?" Asks Viliga.

"Hn, heso peyo. Chaz nglao d' kobe kobetzu ozen sayitza f' tettza gilli, Lelestzam lou tettzo. Semhe shi hetzo peyo. Tubuzha."

Viliga sighs. "Tits, yohi gamzhœ."

"E, Viliga?" She replies.

"Vuze, gamzœ!" Viliga is stricter and raises his voice, almost looking legitimately angry. Ti wastes no time in obeying this time around.

"O-om, hajebshia." She exits the room and closes the door behind her.

Viliga calms down, but his tone is still eerily serious. "Katchi, vumo duhajebshikel. He loe sharaageso no?"

Whatever's happening is a big deal. Katchi kneels, although she is clearly taken aback by this situation. "Om. V-vumon buyi gilli, he chenhe t' dhezh. Hajebshia, sharaagetzo."

"Bong. Lelestzam heso peyo lun, se--banhe hwuvihi wetnimo enjœ sudemisi."

Katchi is still flustered, but she stands and replies, "Hwuvihi wetnimo? Kiro detza ensœ peyo."

"M. Ka win dhezh enjœ. Tetso loe He t' yohi vitchi œ."

The two nod to each other, then to you, as they leave your room.

Now alone, you realize your grand adventure has hit some kind of snag. Something is very wrong.

You have an important decision to make. Consider it carefully.

You dial up Muhammad on the brainophone, and it starts ringing.

I don't know how I did that.

After about eight rings, a woman picks up the phone. "Offices of Muhammad, praise be upon him, how can I help you?"

Oh, uh, hi, is it possible for me to speak with Muhammad?

"I'm sorry, Mr. Abdullah isn't available at the moment, he's in a uh, meeting. Can I take a message?"

What? Wait aren't you the... nurse... from when I was there before? Look, this is important.

"I can't do that, he told me to keep you busy if you called. He doesn't want to talk to you right now."

Jesus, this is ridiculous. Can he hear me right now?

She whispers, "What's that? Okay," She speaks normally again, "He says he can't hear you."

For crying out... Hey Muhammad, look I'm calling to say I'm sorry okay, could you just talk to me directly.

"...Okay he's coming on, I-I'll talk to you later."

You pull your hands across your face, and then there was the big man himself. "Hello?"

Hi Muhammad.

"So uh, what's goin on man?"

I called to apologize.

"Oh, yeah... Thanks but I'm like y'know totally over uh, it."

Good... So, we're okay then?

"Yeah sure. Anyway what's the four one one down in fantasy land brother?"

Well, shit's kind of hit the fan honestly, and everyone seems to be freaking out.

"Oh? Hold on, let me see what happened." Your eyes roll back for a moment, and the last hour of your memory or so plays back quickly. "Oh damn. Alright, so do you want the good news or the bad news?"

The... good news?

"You know what I don't even know why I asked the question it's all the same. Anyway, both good and bad news is I can tell you what happened, but a little bit of backstory first. So, when you got sent down to that world, I had to first send you to the realm of the old gods. That was that void place that really sucked. I had to do that because the old gods have a special power that not even I have. They can inscribe a sigil on the human soul. A sigil is basically just a symbol that directs the change of energy between forms, what forms to go between, how much energy, how quickly, all that good stuff. Some of them, when they get really complicated, can do really cool things, and some are so complicated that only deities can remember and write them. Not only that, but the sigil that sent your soul down to that world and gave you a new body, that's the kind of sigil that needs the deitiest deities to write it since it had to be written directly on your soul."

"Unfortunately for you, it's still there. Old god's sigils don't just up and vanish, they've got some serious staying power. The people of that world call the thing that makes energy change forms 'Hwuvihi.' Don't get that confused with energy, it's the thing that makes energy change from potential to kinetic or electrical for example. When hwuvihi is directed through a person, it doesn't necessarily do anything. Just because energy has the ability to go somewhere doesn't mean it will, and even if it does it won't do anything unless it's told to change forms by hwuvihi, which wouldn't happen normally if there's no sigil there. Ordinarily, hwuvihi doesn't bother with the soul at all. But, if a human tries to control it, such by holding a magic wand, then the power to do so is drawn from the soul. And, if something that does control hwuvihi, say a magic spell that lets you hear other languages as your own is used on you, then even if it's a small amount, there's some hwuvihi pushing energy through your soul. For you, if it's telling energy to go through your soul, it's going to get caught up in that sigil, which will tell the energy to go through however many complicated steps those old farts in the void originally wrote and start pulling your soul out of your body. Luckily, that sigil needs a lot of energy, so without some serious firepower your soul isn't going anywhere. But, that won't stop it from getting tugged on and hurting like a bitch.

That's what happened when you picked up the wand, and it was so intense that you passed out. As for everybody else, this kind of reaction is really rare. So rare, that it's been kept a secret within royalty and their sworn protectors. They referred to the phenomenon as a 'Hwuvihi wetnimo,' which literally means a hwuvihi allergy. I guess you could call it a magic allergy if you wanted to. Viliga said that there were two others that they knew of who had the allergy. Anyway, that means you're going to have supervision for awhile and you'll have less free time. This allergy, it's not permanent, and the more you use magic and/or grow your soul, the more the soul sigil will deteriorate.

You hear the secretary/nurse girl in the background of the call, "Byeeee!" Then the call ends.

You go to bed.

In the morning, Ti wakes you up, and everything seems relatively normal. She doesn't act out of the ordinary, and you feel perfectly fine. The morning goes according to routine, that is until breakfast. Katchi and Viliga are absent, leaving everyone slightly uneasy. Afterwards, you have some free time, although you are unable to leave tha castle now. You decide to:

You feel guilty about not checking on her last night, so you head over to Ti's room, and knock on the door. One thing you instantly notice, her chalkboard is no longer so standoutish. It has her name neatly written and centered, no more drawings or "pyun" next to a smiley face.

The door opens and you're greeted by Ti. Her hair is more orderly, and although she smiles, it's more solemn. "Hajebshia, bizhe."

You enter her room. It's cleaner than before. The desk is free of papers, and her bed free of even a wrinkle. She pulls the chair from her desk, and gestures for you to sit. "He t' kemyu nani no?"

Her demeanor is entirely different. The tone of her voice, the motions of her body. It's all neutral, stiff, and controlled, like she's doing everything with intention.

"Hajebshia, nanij f' tetja peyo. He an nanin tzo no?" She stands perfectly still, with excellent posture simply smiling and waiting for a response.

You decide silence is the best approach. You turn around and close her door, then walk to her bed. You sit and try to get her to do the same. She reluctantly does, and also drops her forced smile. She avoids making eye contact with you.

"E, chenhe medmasho peyo lun, butfen peyo f' atasu œ..." She closes her eyes and tilts her head down. "He t' jizen nom... An, he t' nom, yiposœ peyo. He Viliga n' Chaz t' kemyusini na, sem loa so." Her voice begins to break. "Mazta... Mazta!?" She lunges forward and grabs your shirt, burying her head in your chest. "Mazta chenhe vitsi sudemitzi, nu mazta vumo loa jo f' ylusi no!?" She is crying. You hold her tightly.

"It's okay," You say, patting her back.

"Chenhe burdenso yensa peyo... Viliga burdenso yensa peyo... E mazta? He Chaz t' hesgaitho entsœ tzo gilli, mazta he zhweso no?"

She continues crying for several minutes, holding on to you.

This outburst, it's not the kind of thing that happens in a few days. This girl has had insecurities mounting for months if not years. I know what that's like, I just wish I knew what they were.

After she has finished, she stands. "Oze vom, He t' jizen nom enshœ peyo. Chaz gilli peyo, he t' gemis." She opens the door for you, and it seems like she wants you to leave. You oblige. As you're leaving, she gives you some final words. "Hajebshia... Chaz... Venbimija." Although her words have sadness behind them, she smiles as they're said. This is a real smile.

Then the door closes.

You go back to the courtyard, and find Lelestzam waiting. It seems like it's time for your lesson. You follow her to the study, where she gets set up.

"E, Chaz, Oze he t' ya homitzœ. Chenhe gegetzu no?"

That'll be about the book then. Oh well, best to give it back before she takes it.

She doesn't make any further actions that indicate she wants the book back.

You shrug.

She grabs her book and opens it to a new page. It shows a man and a woman, with body parts labeled.

She points to the eyes on the woman.

"Moi." You say.

She nods, then she covers her eyes. "Chaz moishu peyo." She uncovers them again. "Chaz moishu!" She alternates between the two, saying "Moishu peyo," when her eyes are covered, and "Chaz moishu!" when they are not.

Next, she covers her ears. "Deshu peyo," uncovers, "deshu!"

She closes the book and hides it beneath the table. "Ya moishu no?"

She sets the book on the table once more, then touches her finger to the cover. "Kobesu." Then, she grabs the book and holds it above the table. "Kobesa." Finally, she sets the book down and holds your hand. "Kobeso. E, Medmaso no?" She lets go and holds the book in front of you. "Ya kobezhu."

She shields herself from your gaze, speaking through the strain of a woman's embarrassment. "Ahn...! Chaz t' buyi korupso f' ylusi peyo...!"

"Omelette... Du froma--ow!" Your intense beam of eyesight is interrupted by a heavy book whacking the top of your head.

She stands, holding her arm to her chest in a dramatic pose of regal proclamation. "Ha! He korushi peyo, ha-jeb-shi-a!"

She puts the book away in her bag. "E, dumemyamai vom fotji. He lou Hwuvihi nu kiro chremiso buyi f' yasu yensa lun, kiko he moizhe."

Your lesson for today is over. You still haven't seen Katchi or Viliga all day, and you're mildly worried. Actually, you're very worried and anxious, because everything's gotten much more tense and strange since you touched the stick, so you feel as if it's your fault. However, you can't let that distract you. You still can't leave the castle, so it seems you'll have to find a way to occupy your free time...

You head into the library. Kamyen and Lelestzam are sitting about as far from each other as possible, with their backs turned to boot.

They hear you enter and turn simultaneously. They lock eyes with each other for a brief moment, before returning their eyes to you.

"Chaz, vuko vitzhi!" Says Lelestzam.

"An, semhe lou akakashisu peyo." Returns Kamyen.

She turns her malicious cone of vision his direction again. He remains unphased. It looks like you won't be able to get them to sit together, so you sit with...

Undeterred by their feud of increasingly intense glares, you continue with your mission. You want to read that book, and it's Lelestzam's book, so by golly you're gonna sit with the person who can tell you about that book.

"Sorry Kamyen, maybe next time." You say, as you show Lelestzam's book to communicate your intentions. Rather than reply, he simply huffs and returns to his own reading.

You sit down opposite the small tutor, but she moves to be next to you while reading. You open the book, and she holds the page. She begins reading aloud to you.

"Vumo ya yasa lou, sœnhe t' fcheni hwuvihi d' tongur f' medmayasa. Vuzen fonhe t' medma lou, hwuvihi krako d' litsyu f' funlensœ tesh d' pioi. Buyikedi fochusi lou, krako litsyuso vom malibo f' funlensœ. Kedi jik krako liœsu for, yatza zobuyi lou litsyuso. Len, itho ensœ. Itho buyikedi kobezhu, so holki moizhu."

Beneath the words is a circle. Writing is in the edges, but it's impossible for you to tell where it starts or ends on your own, as it wraps all the way back on itself. There are also multiple lines of text on the edge and within the center, with connecting lines drawn all across.

"Kobesu peyo no?" Asks Lelestzam.

Oh, kobezhu, kobesu, touch it, right. You touch the center of the circle with your index finger. The paragraph above it morphs and changes, reforming into a single word: bong.

Well if that isn't the cat's paja--"--choo!" Suddenly you have a very slight headache and your nose has stuffed up. Huh... They weren't kidding about it being like an allergy were they? I wonder why having my soul tugged at makes me sneeze...

Fate decided that was enough for today, as your session of reading is interrupted by one of the guards from the front gate of the castle. "Chaz, hajebshia, vuko ensœ no?" His words carry an urgency. "Vuze Viliga n' Katchi deltza!"

The guard gathers you, Lelestzam, and Kamyen, and takes you to the front gate. The second guard arrives a moment later with Hflei and Vanrir. Katchi and Viliga soon crest the hill in front of the gate.

Viliga speaks, "Zhœnhe, kemyu enjœ. Katchi medetsi, he adœnveso fotchi f' atasu œ." He walks past you all, leaving Katchi to explain.

Katchi nervously smiles and laughs. "E... Vittzido t' holki gilli, Chaz gaisu."

Kamyen interjects. "He semhe t' tzo holki ravasu lou, he t' sae gujisa f' yensa no?"

"K-Kamyen, he medmaso na, n--"

"So peyo. Chenhe shi tso peyo." Kamyen turns around and walks back to the library.

Katchi looks somewhat dejected, but proceeds anyway. "Fonhe lou Kamyen enjœ peyo jair lun, fottsi. E, vitji no?"

Hflei, Vanrir, and Lelestzam all nod. Then, they start to depart back down the hill away from the castle. You follow them. They go a route that is familiar to you now, to the adventurer's hall. Rather than to the counter, or the tables, you're taken to a posting board. There are several flyers around, and Katchi shows you three which you can choose from.

"Vumon ka kemyu d' noi gilli a gemizhu."

The three flyers she pointed to say the following:

"Chengose kemyu" followed by a symbol which looks like "+", "Ko Dudun thotsmœnwen chengozhe. Wanjish t' kut ensœ he t' thots jik kashikatju tzo ensœ."

"Chengose kemyu + Ga dudun gururu chengozhe. Gururu Wanjish t' nut ensœ."

"Gegesu kemyu + He t' oil t' geit nomkedi. Wanjish jik makiyonuso for, uyumitza. Chenhe gegetzu lun, he Wanjish t' iyat d' dumaifon ensœ. He t' nem Kertormi Fig."

You grab the third listing, which is different from all the others.

If it's different, it must be more interesting. I don't see any others like it even outside of the three she pointed to.

However, the others seem to feel slightly different. Lelestzam groans, and Vanrir sighs. Katchi tries to remain upbeat about it, "Tenœ... Chaz t' jes kemyu! ... E, zhœnhe...?"

You're pumped up for your first quest, but everyone else's somewhat sour attitude kind of ruins it for you. Katchi leads your party into the busy shopping district. "E, fonhe gilli fotchi. Hflei n' Vanrir, chensœnhe nut-iyat horse. Lelestzam, fonhe Chaz adhe ensœ ylusi peyo. Chaz, Lelestzam w' he, hwottze lou fotsi yensa no?"

Hflei and Vanrir nod, then walk off on their own towards the part of the district you haven't been to yet. Lelestzam and Katchi stay, but they're waiting for you. Judging from their posture, it seems you're being presented a choice between accompanying one of them or the other. You choose to accompany...

You haven't interacted with Katchi since the day you came, so you might as well take the opportunity.

"Hot potatoes batman, she's got a penis," you say, nodding toward Katchi. They just take it to mean you choose to go with her.

Lelestzam nods. "M, oze moise." She runs off, leaving you and Katchi to yourselves.

"Chaz, fonhe nomkedi loe horse. Medmaso no?"

In response, you shrug. You've gotten the general idea, you're all splitting up to search for something within the shopping district, but what that is you haven't the faintest.

"Nomkedi." She feigns a small circle with her fingers just above her bust, then takes her hands and makes a motion with both hands, seeming to wrap around her neck, connecting behind her nape and where she feigned the circle.

A necklace? Locket? Something like that. Well, at least I've got an idea now. You nod to show understanding.

"E bong, Fotchi œ! Sa, Hflei n' Vanrir," she points in the direction the two went, "nut-iyat fottzi. N' Lelestzam," pointing toward where she went, "nut-lopi fottzi gilli... Chenhe n' he kut-lopi fotsi sudemisi... M." Her final statement sounded like she was going over what she said in her head, just to confirm it was right.

The two of you start off toward the northeast portion of the district, searching high and low for the... nomkedi. You notice that Katchi isn't just scanning the ground but people as well, to see if any of them have it. You prioritize looking in small places where something might get kicked under. You look beneath stairs and between buildings. Unfortunately, neither you nor Katchi seem to have success. It's time for a change of strategy. Although you're not sure how to communicate it to Katchi, you think it's best that you...

This isn't working... We're never going to find the thing just wandering around out here. How likely is it that it's just out on the road anyway? If something valuable like that was left out, then either someone's taken it already, or it's been kicked out of the way of the thoroughfare.

You run up and try to get Katchi's attention. She is resolutely running her eyes across every person within viewing distance, completely focused on her task. You pull on the sleeve of her shirt.

"Katchi,"

"hn... e? A, Chaz. Gegesu no?"

You shake your head, figuring in an appropriate response to her question. Or at least you think she asked if you found it yet, something along those lines, hopefully. "Nomkedi..." You wave your arms around to try and get across 'here', or 'this street', "peyo."

"E? Kiro bong lun, hwoko ensœ no?"

Okay, so the message got across, now what? You motion for her to follow with your hand, and you jog over to an area where the buildings are tightly packed together, and you point towards the alleys between them.

"A medmaso, gaifun Chaz! M, biche."

She gleefully leads the way into the dark labyrinth ahead of you. Luckily for you, it seems these areas are actually kept remarkably clean. There's no garbage or litter, although there are a few stray fish.

Hold the phone. That's a fish outta water, walkin around on its fins.

"Mrow"

Yeah ok.

"Chaz, hwoko ensœ no?"

"Cat fish!"

Oh, now I get it.

"Keat... Fœsh... Chaz t' dutetmon fuifoi œ... A! Thotsmœnwen. Ngao f' tetsa peri thotsmœnwen."

Just then you notice, it was hard to see at first due to their shiny scales, but the thotsmœnwen in front of you has something shiny wrapped around its body. You hold out your hand and click your tongue, to try and get the thing to come. It's cautious of you, but you're able to get close enough to take off the shiny thing. It's a locket.

"Katchi, nomkedi no?"

She hops over to you, scaring off the thotsmœnwen accidentally.

"Om. Kiro nomkedi. Chenhe gegetzu. E, win gol lou moiche."

You meet the others back at the shopping district's eastern entrance, then you all retire to the castle. It's gotten late while you were searching, in fact it's just about when you normally go to sleep. But, as you're preparing to do just that, your pocket buzzes. Your instinct is to pull out your phone and see who texted you, but when you try you're greeted by your now glowing stat card. Where once it said "Westi enjœ peyo", it now has six glowing green options, which you're strangely drawn to touch. It takes you a minute, but you eventually decipher them to say...

You touch the one labeled "Gaifun".

You feel ever so slightly more intelligent.

Afterward, you retire to sleep.

That is, until something goes bump in the night.

You wake up groggy to another noise. This time it was more distinct. That wasn't outside your door, it was your door. It just opened a bit. You would like to grab your magic stick for self defense, but before you reach for it atop your nightstand you realize that might be a bad idea. So instead, you grab the candleholder next to it. The door hasn't moved any more than where it was just a second ago, so you walk over to it. You ready your candleholder and pull open the door, but nobody's there. You peek down the hallway. Viliga's room is to your left, and the hallway ends there on that side. To your right is a corner that leads to the stairs, and just for a moment you think you see something rounding that corner.

You run out of your room after it. You see it briefly again at the bottom of the stairs. It turns right, so you follow.

It's heading toward the front gate!

When you reach the bottom, you catch a glimpse of it running toward the front gate. It's too dark to make anything of its figure aside from it being humanoid, and you think it has some kind of tail. Unfortunately, it's out of the gate and gone before you can catch up. At the gate, two guards lay on the ground motionless. You check them closer and they're alive, just unconscious. One of them starts to wake up, and when he sees you he begins prostrating.

"H-hajebshia! Dœnvetzo, tubuzha!"

You wave him off. It doesn't seem like they were sleeping on the job. They were probably knocked out by whatever tried to enter your room. When he stops, you try to tell him about the intruder with gestures and miming, but it doesn't work. For now, you're the only one who knows about this, and if you can't find a way to tell the others, you'll have to be the one to deal with it. Untill then, you return to your bed and sleep away the remainder of the night.

In the morning, everything is as usual again. Katchi and Viliga are present at breakfast, and there's no heavyness in the air. After breakfast, the day's pace picks up. It doesn't appear as if you'll have any free time this morning, as Katchi, Lelestzam, Hflei, and Vanrir all disperse to the quartership.

Oh, that's right. The quest isn't actually over, is it? We still have to return the locket to its owner.

You get dressed and prepared to go back into town as well, and gather in the courtyard with the others. When everyone is ready, you all depart. However, rather than going to the hall or to the shopping district, they take you along a new route. A little ways along this northward road, you stop at a stable. There, the group hires a cart. You climb in, and you're taken further along the road. A ways in, you get a glimpse of a really interesting setup. There's a large inletted area along the coast, with steep walls of rock on all sides, easily extending into the lake about fifteen or twenty feet below. On your level, a lattice of catwalks hangs over the gouge, with strange cranelike devices attached to rails along them. Katchi points to them and calls the complex structure of boards and devices the "Kut d' hadi". The road branches several times, and stops between where the catwalks emerge from the ground.

Overlooking the kut d' hadi, you spot a tall cylindrical structure. You might be tempted to call it a lighthouse, but you can't tell for sure one way or the other.

Further beyond, you follow a long switchback, which leads into a very residential looking area. It's still a little early, so there's not much activity, but the people who are out and about wave as your cart drives by. You expect to stop somewhere along the road in this area, but instead you go well beyond it, onto a bridge leading east and off of the island. It looks like you're in for a longer ride than you thought.

Crossing the bridge takes a few minutes at a solid trot. On the mainland, you emerge into a cleared path within a forest. The path is wide, and after about half an hour the forest thins, giving way to a carved section aside a narrow river.

"E, Nani kiron mœnliœ d' jem no?" Asks Katchi.

"Gwanili." Answers Lelestzam. "Sanasana... Katchi, chenhe iyat gilli Wanjish vittzi œ?"

"M. He t' hwokon Tsuyeppo."

"Tsuyeppo? Pier l' dume peyo no?"

"M œ."

"Sa, nani lou vuko vittzi no?"

"Hn... Komowut l' nom yentza f' atasu."

"A, metbiausu. E Hflei, Vanrir, chensœnhe winkodh œ."

Hflei answers for both of them. "M. Stoiriz gilli vittzi. Mazta f' medtezhu peyo."

Lelestzam turns her gaze to you, "Chaz? Chenhe t' hwokon nani no?"

Boy howdy, here we go. Alright everybody let's play the feud.

"Lelestzam, anbuyi ensœ, Chaz of gilli vittzi œ. Desu entzœ peyo no? Ven f' gegechu no?" Katchi's voice changes from genuine curiosity to sarcastic overacting.

Lelestzam does the same. "Om Katchi, chenhe bong f' atasu œ! Chaz, kiron royo œrth ensœ no?" She points directly upward. You get the distinct impression you're being teased.

You look away and puff out your cheeks. "Yeah whatever, you guys aren't even pronouncing it right."

The ride follows this river for nearly two and a half hours before you spot signs of a city. At first it's scattered homes and buildings, but it becomes gradually more dense as you continue northeast along the river. Eventually the cart pulls beyond a wall into the dense urban center of the city, and stops at a stable similar to the one back in Wanjish. The river runs through the city, and in the distance you can see a castle, far more grand than Viliga's. The city is absolutely packed with people and buildings as far as you can see. More of the people around you are dressed in more expensive looking clothes, but everybody still maintains the same friendly attitude that you've seen so far from the inhabitants of Wanjish.

"Vumon dumaifon Vavila. Pier bitze." Says Lelestzam.

"Kertormi Fig loe horse jetsi." Says Hflei.

"A, sanasana... Fonhe horse sudemisi peyo. Banhe t' hwoko f' heso."

"Bong no, Katchi? Hwoko no?" Asks Lelestzam.

"Hn, vumon nomkedi moizha." Katchi shows the locket to Lelestzam and flips it over. Engraved on the back is an intricate symbol (that looks like pic related). You never noticed it, but that symbol is actually the same as on the banners flown outside the city's walls.

Lelestzam laughs on seeing the engraving. "A, medmaso! Sa, hajebshia Kertormi moise fotchi œ!"

You all begin walking, and although it's far you soon reach the castle. You pass by thousands of people. Some of them look like citizens, some look like adventurers, some are merchants, but the one constant across all of them is that they don't look poor. Even when you see someone who isn't upbeat and confident in their stride, they're dressed well. Children run and play in the streets under a complete lack of supervision, and they wear clothes that make them look like the sons and daughters of wealthy statesmen. Even in Wanjish, where people's lifestyle wasn't so extravagant as here, you never actually saw someone who you thought to be homeless. The economy in this country, if this world even has countries as you think of them, must be very strong at the moment.

At the castle, two guards stand at the gate. They don't physically stop you, but they do engage in conversation. "A, kedjama, hero! Nani sœnhe t' kemyu no?"

Katchi answers the guard. "Hero. Sœnhe Wanjish gilli vittzi. Kiko lou hemisœ nanin enjœ, hajebshia loe. Moishe no?"

"E? Wanjish? Chensœnhe..."

"M, fonhe akinya t' hfuli do."

"A! Viliga t' kemyujama!? Benhe t' geit enjœ no?"

Katchi pulls out an envelope sealed with wax. You catch a glimpse of the seal. It's a similar complex symbol to the one you saw on the locket, but it's different in the details.

The guard bows and allows you all to pass. You walk through the castle and are soon in a chamber similar to Viliga's. Within it a handsome man sits in a chair. Katchi kneels before him.

"Hajebshia, chenhe t' nomkedi gegetzu."

"Hn... Venbimija." The man stands up and walks to Katchi. But, instead of taking the locket from her, he walks past and approaches you.

"E?"

"Vumon weyan sem... Kovet sem t' nom he œ? M. Chenhe nem Chaz no?" He gingerly grabs your hand, and pulls it to his mouth. He kisses the back of your hand, and holds it in his. "Chenhe t' kobe pier monin, hajebshia."

He releases your hand, and seems to be waiting for your response.

You blush at the man's advances, bashfully curtsy, and fan yourself with your hand. "Why, little old me? Oh I think I've got a case of the vapors! Even though I'm a boy I'm so embarrassed."

The man smiles awkwardly, "A, hajebshia, Kiron detzu ensœ peyo dutetmon nani no? Semtetjœn œ."

"Kertormi, semhe medmasho peyo," says Katchi.

"Fonhe t' dutetmon... tetsho peyo no?"

"Ime, semhe t' hwokon œrth."

"...Sana. Sa, chenseœnhe t' makiyonus gilli venitzu sudemisi œ! Oil t' geit nomkedi poeltza f' venbimija. Wofuto, vuko gujisa n' dœnveso f' feiteniso, Totozhu. Kemyusini, ohe t' yohi moizhœ nu, gadogujis loe gujismai halezhi." He claps his hands, and servants come to escort you all. As you're being led out, Kertormi calls your name. When you look back, he winks.

You are led to a room where you can set down your small bag of belongings, and then you are taken to a dining hall. Both the room and eatery are more luxurious than those of Viliga's castle. For dinner, a wide assortment of well made meats, fish, and crab. It was already prepared and the table set when you arrive, else you would have offered to help cook, if you could have figured out how to that is.

After the meal, enough time has passed in the day for sunset. Kertormi poses you all a question.

"E, zhœnhe, vuzedœn delsa no? W' vuko dœnveso no?"

Everyone looks to you for a decision.
