"Isn't this where we were meant to meet with the rebel guide?" Kyouko asked from her position behind a nearby tree. You simply nodded in response, you weren't in the mood to talk right now.

Your trek from the and hill had taken a few days, your little detour to the abandoned village hadn't cut into your travel time too much as you had been able to make up for it. Your original plan was to meet up with a rebel guide just north of the town of Chengzizhou on the Ganjiang river, from there the guide would take you to to where Grandma's cell was based. And you had been waiting in the allotted meeting point for going onto a couple of hour now, and yet nobody had shown up.

"Maybe they forgot." Logan suggested from his hiding spot. Unlike your two comrades, you had to stay out in the open in case the rebels showed up.

"Or maybe the army got them. If we're going to play the what if game, then we might as well assume the worst." Kyouko replied, while you didn't like her idea of assuming the worst, you had to at least consider it.

"If so, should we really stay to find out?" Logan asked you. You simply shook your head, one of the many things about being the de-facto commander of your squad was that both of your friends always looked to you for their next moves.

>Stay in position just a little while longer, you've been here for so long that you might as well spend another hour or so here.

"We'll stay for just a bit longer, another hour. If they don't show up then we'll leave." You decided. While you had to give your contact some time to arrive, you didn't want to wait for too long. In the grand scheme of things, you didn't have much time.

Your squad mates didn't respond, instead answering your order with silent acceptance. And so, you waited for even longer. The sounds of the chirping birds, and the water quietly brushing against the shore making up the sounds of nature around you. These sounds however, were pouted by the noise of human life nearby, in the rural town to your south. You kept a keen eye out for any passing boats while keeping an ear out to listen past the distant sound of engines and industry.

After a half an hour, you realised that the sound of engines were getting closer.

"Shit, get down!" You hissed at your squad mates, as you quickly dived back into the forest. You lay flat in the damp foliage and waited for a good 15 minutes for the sound to get closer. But when you saw what exactly was making that noise, you were glad that you had taken cover.

Trundling up the river, moving at around the speed of the few junk rafts that perused the waters was a single Japanese torpedo boat. However, this one had been modified extensively. It lacked the depth charges and torpedoes of it's ocean going counterpart, instead, it mounted a pair of heavy machine guns, and numerous firing positions for it's crew. Thankfully however, you noticed that the firing positions seemed to be unoccupied. In fact, the only visible crew were the gunners for the mounted guns. And both of the crewmen didn't seem to be on alert, instead glancing at the forest and riverside with a bored look upon them.

"What the fuck, nobody told us that the Japs were performing river patrols." Logan quietly hissed from behind you, once again stating the obvious.

"It is a fairly deep river, with a number of boats that travel along it, three have already passed this part of the river in the time that we spent here." Kyouko pointed out to Logan, before then adding. "Then again, one of the people on any of those boats could have ratted us out to the army..."

"Still up for waiting for the contact?" Logan asked you from a few meters to your right. Taking another look up at the patrol boat, you noticed that the gunners still hadn't noticed you.

>Attack the patrol boat, you have the element of surprise.
>Keep low and stay in position just a little while longer, they don't see you.

"They don't see us. Keep low and we'll wait for them to pass." You ordered your squadmates, but even as you gave the order you flicked the safety off your rifle. While you didn't want to get into a fight, you needed to be ready in case the Japanese soldiers wised up.

Thankfully however, the boat's gunners didn't notice you. The pair of them instead choosing to chat to each other rather than looking for threats. The small boat continued on at a sedate pace, and after another quarter of an hour, the boat had passed further down the river. Out of sight, and with it's engine almost having melded away into the background noise of the jungle.

"So, now we have to deal with gun boats." Logan sighed after a short amount of time after tjhe patrol boat had left. "We should have brought a bazooka."

"Sure, and you could carry that fifteen pound dead-weight on your own." Kyouko stated flatly, bringing up the ever-present issue of weight that you had to factor into all of your operational considerations. Hell, just carrying the equipment you had right now was bad enough. You didn't need to add on an extra dozen or so pounds for a purely situational weapon.

The conversation died after a few second as you hushed your squad again. Another boat was coming down the river. And while this one was just a normal civilian one, it was sailing far too close to the river's bank for your liking. Your suspicion about it making landfall was proven correct when it beached itself up against the banks of the river a few meters downstream. As soon as the boat came to a stop, one of the men on the bow of the boat jumped onto the shore with a rifle in his hands.

"American friends! Are you here!" The man yelled in surprisingly good English. A slight Boston accent mixing with his more traditional voice.

>Get up and head over, this guy's probably your guide.

"He's late." You stated simply as you got up from your hiding spot, your backpack being slung over your shoulder as you rose. The man with the rifle looking further down the river, away from you.

"Over here!" You called the man's attention as you made your way out of the treeline. The man quickly spun to face you, startled at your sudden appearance. However, he quickly relaxed when he saw that you were in an American uniform.

"Good to finally meet you. My name is Li Wei, though you can call me Louie if you would prefer." Your guide introduced himself as he walked towards you and your now emerging unit. He passed his rifle into his left hand, before offering his now free right hand to shake.

"Good to meet you Louie. My name is Burkhard Eugen, I'm the team's de-facto leader." You introduced yourself to your guide as you shook his hand, before then introducing your comrades. "The man behind me is Logan Grant, typically he's our radio operator, but with the current mission requirements, his talents are going a bit unused. The lady is Kyouko Osaki, our medic and translator."

"Ah, a Japanese woman fighting for us? There is an irony to be seen there." Louie chuckled as he made to go past you to shake Kyouko's hand. You moved just off to the side to let him through, where he offered his hand to your squad mate.

Kyouko paused for a second, before carefully shaking his hand. But as they shook hands, Louie spoke in Japanese. "Inishie mo ima mo kawaranu yo no naka ni."

Kyouko flinched in surprise at the sudden statement in her native language, before smiling broadly and replying. "Kokoro no tane o nokosu koto no ha."

Louie simply chuckled in response, and let go of Kyouko's hand. He quickly turned to face Logan, who was already waiting to accept his offered handshake.

"It is good to meet you, though I must ask. Your squad leader said that you are the group's radio operator, do you know much about repairing or servicing radios?" Louie asked as he shook Logan's hand, your squad mate's smile seemed to widen at the mention of his skills being of use.

"Assuming that it's US military standard, then I can definitely fix it. If not then I can still make a good attempt for you." Logan agreed to help, his assurance further pleasing your guide.

"Splendid! Now come, we should get going. You'll have to sit in the covered area, the Japanese river patrols have only increased in number and we don't want any of you to be seen." Louie stated as he turned to lead your squad to the boat. The 4 of you quickly climbed up and into the shallow-hulled boat, and Louie quickly cast your boat off by nudging it off the riverbank. He called back to the man on the back of the boat, who started up the small engine at the back as your squad took cover inside the covered part of the boat. The 3 of you now relatively safe from prying eyes.

Deciding not to push your luck with the known Japanese patrols. You instead decided to keep quiet and rest, you hadn't been able to sleep fairly well for a solid few days, ever since you had that nightmare. As such, you instead decided to instead try to catch some rest on the way upriver. As such, you took off your backpack and tried to make yourself comfortable in the narrow craft. You weren't able to catch a full nap due to the sound of the nearby engine, but even resting your eyes for just an hour or so was good enough for you. And soon enough, your sampan knocked up against the land and came to a stop.

"Come on, we shouldn't keep Miss Shufen waiting." Louie said from just outside as you got up from your laid down position. You shoved your way outside, and found that your boat had been docked at a small, bustling village. The people within busying themselves with their daily chores.

"Come on, we don't want to be here when the Japanese come here." Louie pestered you as you stepped onto the docks, Logan emerging from the sampan's covered section behind you. You quickly followed after Louie, who waited for your squad to muster before leading you through the village. As you continued through, a few Children pointed you and your squad out to their parents, who quickly herded them into nearby buildings. As you expected, the sight of 3 heavily armed foreign individuals was something that was of cause for concern, no matter where you were.

"We'll be transporting you out to your destination on horseback. Do any of you know how to ride horses?" Louie asked as he brought you to a set of stables, the horses inside were already set up with saddles and were awaiting their riders.

"I know how to ride a horse. Logan does too." Kyouko announced, the revalation being news to you.

"You know how to ride a horse?" Logan asked Kyouko, you had already knew that he could ride a horse as he had grown up on a farm. Horses were typically used to herd farm animals after all.

"Of course, my family on my mother's side are a line of traditional horse archers. I was expected to learn how to ride, especially as there were few cars in our todōfuken, prefecture." Kyouko explained as she picked out a horse.

"And you Mr Eugen?" Louie asked you as your comrades picked out their stallions.

"I'm afraid that I'm the odd one out for horse riding. I can drive a car, ride a motorbike and fly a plane. But I never learned how to ride on horseback." You explained with a shake of the head. Louie simply shrugged in acceptance.

"That is fine, though you'll have to ride with someone. Unfortunately, we don't have any planes or motorbikes." Louie joked lightheartedly, though he was right, you would have to ride bitch.

Taking stock of your options, you decided to ride with Kyouko. because You would rather spend the long and probably bumpy ride holding onto the only woman in your team. You didn't feel comfortable spending such a long time with your arms wrapped around a man.

That, and you knew that Kyouko would make all manners of jokes at your expense. So you might as well turn the tables on her.

You kept standing around in mock thought for a few more seconds as Kyouko took her position on the horse, her backpack hanging off the side of the saddle. And you waited for her to be looking away before you quickly surged forwards and jumped up behind her. And to it's credit, the horse didn't react to the tall and heavy man jumping onto it's back. Though Kyouko only really noticed you when you wrapped one of your arms around her so that you didn't slide off the other side.

"Hey! Getting a bit grabby now?" Kyouko asked sarcastically as you unslung your backpack and attached it to the opposite side of the saddle to Kyouko's pack.

"What, want me to grab something else..." You admitted slyly, hoping to fluster your comrade. Unfortunately however, all Kyouko did was just turn and stare back at you unflinchingly.

"Arms around my waist, and you'll loose them if they wander." Kyouko stated, her words devoid of any humour.

"Ok! Waist only." You agreed, choosing to back off just a bit. Your sudden change in tone getting a chuckle out of Logan.

"Are you all ready to go?" Louie asked, bringing the 3 of you back to the matter at hand. And as soon as you all nodded in agreement, Louie continued. "Good, follow me."

And with that Louie lead your squad out of the village on horseback. Unfortunately, because you were forced to ride on the horse's bare back, your ride was very uncomfortable. And for a bit, you felt that Kyouko was making the horse deliberately bouncy. Your unit was silent for your trip out of the village, and for a good bit further out of the village, until Louie finally spoke.

"So, do you all have any questions before we get to the base?" Louie asked, obviously trying to be helpful.

"Just a brief overview if you wouldn't mind. Japanese operations in the area, major bases and weak points." You asked the basic and broadest question, and surprisingly enough you didn't have to wait for an answer.

"Well, I don't really know all of their deployments, but I can tell you that there are two main bases in our operating area. One in Ji'an and another in Nanching. They also have smaller bases in towns like the one in Chengzizhou. The Japanese have also started moving in assorted river gun boats so that they can move their supply line between Ji'an and Nanching onto the river. From what we can gather, this is because they want to avoid the risk of roadside bombs and fougasses that we usually set up to harass their supply lines. They've also started using those patrol boats to perform river patrols to hamper any attempts we make to dam the river. We could still feasibly attack these river convoys but..." Louie explained in surprising detail before pausing, you guessed so that one of you could essentially fill in the blank.

"But the river patrol would be better defended than any land convoy, attacking it would be certain death for whoever was sent to do so. Explosives don't really work underwater, fougasses don't have the range and wouldn't work well in the damp conditions. And any kind of cannon or anti-tank weapon that you have puts the operator into range of the enemy guns." Logan filled in, explaining why the idea to attack the river patrols was not going to work.

"Exactly, and we don't have enough anti-tank weapons in the first place to be wasting them on a suicide mission. We also cannot attack the vessels while they are in port in the cities as they are stored away in the Japanese bases where we cannot hit them. We haven't found any weak points in this system, though all of their convoys may be weak to a surprise attack. They've spent months on the lookout for mines and bombs, so the sudden change of pace might be enough to get an advantage." Louie confirmed Logan's assessment, before then continuing on with his assessment.

"What about your cell? Apparently your a bit understaffed." Kyouko asked, having sensed where you line of questioning was going.

"That would be an understatement. We're down to only a few dozen combat-capable men and women. Many more are injured or unable to directly fight. The few OSS teams in the area are a great boon when they come around to help us. But as of right now, there are no teams with us. The last team went out into the jungle and never came back. Miss Shufen will be able to tell you more, but suffice to say that your presence will be a great boon to us." Louie summed up his cell, painting you a bleak picture of his cell's combat capabilities.

"What do you know about the disappearances of civilians in the area? Rumour has it that the Japanese are up to no good." You asked, going off on a bit of a tangent. But still a relevant one.

>>

"When are the Japanese ever not up to no good..." Louie practically growled, his friendly demeanour slipping for just a bit, before he jumped back to a calmer tone for his explanation. "We haven't seen the kind of... extreme depopulation that our fellow communist cells have seen. people have started to move out of the villages, but at the same time, the number of people entering the towns and cities has increased. We can't be sure however, but we know from the OSS that many of the mass disappearances have happened north of Jiujiang. But because of a lack of available people we haven spent the resources to investigate any further."

"Your accent is curious, tell me, where did you manage to learn English so well?" Kyouko changed the subject, apparently sensing the buildup of tension.

"I learned in Nanking, from a western man called Mr Baker. His wife was also a teacher, but that's besides the point. He had a very pronounced accent that impacted on many of his students, myself included. I can't remember exactly where he came from, but it was somewhere in the state of Massachusetts. Regardless, I originally intended to learn in order to become a translator for either the government or for businesses. However, when the civil war started those plans went down the drain, so to speak." Louie explained, at least telling you why he sounded like he was from Boston.

Having decided that you had asked enough questions, you decided to keep quiet and not bother your guide anymore. You had some more pressing matters to deal with, like the fact that you were now fairly hungry. Thankfully, you still had some biscuits left over from your morning allowance from the C rations. So you ate the biscuits one by one as your squad mates asked a few more questions.

"What might we have to do in order to earn Miss Shufen's trust?" Kyouko asked Louie, keeping her question more work-oriented.

"Well, considering that you're heavily armed and look like the kind of squad dedicated to offensive work, you'll probably have to either ambush some convoys, or destroy some bases. It's not safe work, but it's the quickest way to earn Miss Shufen's trust and a few favours." Louie explained, giving you a little insight into what you may be doing next.

"Where are you from?" Logan asked, his question being too far on the personal side for your liking. Though you guessed that he was just trying to strike up conversation.

"I used to hail from the town of Hantun, in western Shandong province. I moved to Nanking before the revolution, and managed to escape the city during the Japanese assault. I then came here and joined the rebellion." Louie quickly explained, obviously not wanting to loiter on the subject.

"Hey, Burke. Give me one of the biscuits." Kyouko asked you, noticing that you were having a snack.

"Sure." You said, before offering the biscuit to your comrade with an outstretched hand. "Here you go."

"I've got my hands full here riding the horse, feed me." Kyouko clarified, opening the doors for you.

"Oh ho ho! So you want me to put it in your mouth?" You jokingly asked, a lewd smile spreading across your face.

"The only time you'll ever be able to do so without be biting it off..." Kyouko returned the innuendo, before opening her mouth. You broke a biscuit in half and fed it to your comrade.

"Are they married? They seem very... close." Louie asked, looking on uncomfortably at the scene.

"Naw, they're just playing with each other. Burke had a girl waiting for him back home. And she's a cutie to boot." Logan explained, making reference to your mutual friend.

"Yep! She cooks, cleans and puts out too!" You boasted with fake enthusiasm. You didn't actually know if Klara did any of the things that you had just claimed, but you wouldn't let that stop you.

"Yeah, she also has enough issues to-" Kyouko began, before almost gagging as you shoved the second part of the biscuit into her mouth.

"Shhhh, there's no need be rude to your better." You mockingly soothed your comrade, the smile on your face only widening as you forced yourself not to burst out laughing.

"I'm gonna shove that rifle up your ass." Kyouko threatened you once as she had finished eating the biscuit. And for some reason, this caused you to burst out laughing. Your laughter echoing through the empty forest as you made your way up towards grandma's encampment.

A few hours had passed by the time you arrived, and the sun was high in the mid-day sky. You had long since left the road behind and dismounted from your stallions, instead using them as pack mules through the undergrowth. Though the base itself was nothing like the ants nest from before. The base was practically a village built under the canopy. Dozens of small huts were packed around the maze of trees, with outlying stone pillboxes for security. The village was complete with a well, a stable and the civilian villagers. Women and children inhabited the village alongside the armed rebels, and those civilians all stopped and stood aside at your passing. You were never one to like being the centre of attention, but part of you certainly liked the entire village of close to hundreds of people parting before you.

it didn't take you long to reach the hut at the centre of the town, the largest one. A tree seemed to be growing up through the middle of it, as if the hut itself had been built around the tree in much the same manner that the rest of the village had been built around this hut. Louie stopped you before you could enter.

"Alright, this is Miss Shufen's hut. She's been waiting for you for a long time, so you ought to head inside. But if you have any questions to ask me before you go in, then now's the chance." Louie explained, before giving you his offer.

"I don't have any questions. What about you two?" You asked your comrades, who simply shook their heads in response.

"Well, if you have no questions then I ought to get out of your way." Louie sighed before stepping aside, apparently a bit disheartened by his knowledge not being required.

"Thank you for helping us this far. Hopefully we'll be able to work together at a later date." You thanked you guide, before walking into the hut. the wooden door swinging open on rusted hinges, making quite the sound as you made to enter.

You found yourself standing in a long hallway as you entered which continued down to the opposite end of the hut, where an open doorway lead to the rest of the hut. Along the walls of the corridor were a number of assorted pegs and coat hangers, where weapons and backpacks were hung up. Closer to the door deeper into the hut, was a set of pegs that had been marked out in white, a sign above them labelled them as "OSS USE ONLY, with the same being repeated in Chinese.

"You think e have to ditch our gear here before we meet with the chief?" Logan asked as he entered, the door closing behind him.

"That would make sense, but do we really want to leave our equipment just lying around?" Kyouko mused from just behind you as you surveyed the situation.

"We'll keep our gear, sling your weapons with safeties on." You ordered, before slinging your monitor over your shoulder. You paused for a few seconds for your comrades to put their weapons away, before leading them through to where you assumed that the leader of the cell was waiting. And sure enough, you were correct.

The room you entered was surprisingly large, even with a large tree growing up through the middle. Said tree was surrounded by what could be best described as a tiny and decorative garden, with a number of wildflowers growing around it. And sat between you and the tree, was a small table. Sat on the opposite side of the table was a fairly old looking woman, stood at her flanks were a pair of very gruff and experienced looking men with a Soviet made sub-machineguns. They both stared dirks and daggers at you as your squad filed in. However, the woman smiled at all 3 of you with a tender smile.

"Hello, and welcome to my humble abode. I hope that you had a safe trip." The woman welcomed you with a smile, apparently not caring that all 3 of you were armed to the teeth.

"About as safe as possible ma'am, thank you. Berkhard Eugen, OSS." You introduced yourself as you made to sit down in front of your host. Kyouko sitting to your left while Logan sat to your right.

"A fact of the times I'm afraid. Would you like some Huangjiu, wine?" The woman offered, gesturing to a small bottle that sat on the table with 4 small cups. You nodded politely in response, signalling that you would like something to drink as the woman continued to talk.

"Well, I must say that your presence here is certainly a boon, the Japanese have been making gains in the region. And we're not in the best shape right now, so I'll be perfectly happy to cater to any needs that you may have, including any questions that you have." "What terms are you on with the Japanese, the locals and the other cells?" You asked, trying to compress your questions into their briefest possible form.

"Well, the Japanese still view us as a threat, enough that they're moving all of their major traffic between Ji'an and Nanching onto the river. Though their local airbase is suppressing us enough that we cannot quickly steal equipment from the Japanese patrols and convoys that we attack. They are looking for our base here, but they've only managed to destroy the bases of some smaller cells." Grandma explained as she poured all of you your drinks.

"And the other cells?" You asked, trying to move the conversation along.

"We haven't been able to get any support from the other cells as they're too far away to actively help up. The last cell to actually help us was the British, and even then that was back when we were at our maximum strength. The smaller cells in the region mostly splintered from our cell after Yang Kun's failed attack. Some however, are completely new, and as such their tactics can be very different." Grandma explained, now passing the cups out to the 3 of you, and keeping one for herself.

"What about the locals?" You asked before taking a sip of your drink as you listened in and enjoyed the slight buzz as you tasted alcohol for the first time in a good week. You had gone through the alcohol that you had looted from the patrol that you had jumped soon after landing in just a few days. So having some wine right now was a treat, even if wine wasn't your first choice of alcohol.

"They still support us to a degree, but I would be lying if I were to say that they were still fully backing us. Ever since the Japanese broke us, we've begun to loose civilian support. They still help us to a degree, but now that there are other cells in the area that seem to be accomplishing much more than us, we're gradually loosing out to the newer cells. We're in dire need of a major victory in order to win-back popular support." Grandma summarised, answering your question as quickly as she could in order to get back to her drink.

Over the next few hours, you talked on and on at length with Miss Shufen. Generally working to understand the situation that her cell was in, and it was not an enviable one.

Her cell was undergoing what could best be described as a slow death. The cell had been a major thorn in the Japanese side, but they had been broken apart during an attempt to wipe out the Japanese base at Ji'an. However, the assault had failed spectacularly when the Japanese deployed aircraft to pin the cell down just long enough for reinforcements to arrive. These reinforcements had broke the rebel attack apart, almost wiping the cell out and having definitely destroyed a good 3/4s of the cell. The cell had further fell apart during the ensuing power struggle and the fallout of the failed attack. As of right now, there were around 10 different rebel cells that had split off after the Ji'an massacre.

While most of these cells preferred the more traditional tactics of harassing the Japanese with snipers and roadside bombs, others had taken a more draconian measure to waging the war. They took the Japanese brutality and reversed it, using Japanese terror tactics against the invaders. However, this had the downside of only escalating the Japanese brutality. In spite of this escalation of brutality from the resistance, the Japanese still had the major advantage in the area. And if Grandma's cell was ever to recover enough for you to count on their support, you would have to pull your weight and help knock the Japanese down a peg.

As such, you had a few options on what to attack. Attacking the convoys was certainly something that could be done, but it wouldn't get you very far. There were bases for you to attack, but for at least the first few bases that you attacked, you would have to take them out on your own. Grandma couldn't spare the men to assist you in your undertaking.

However, your decision on what you would hit could wait for another day, you and your squad mates needed some rest before you could head out for a fight. So you were able to get yourselves a small hut to yourselves to rest in for a few days. And only a few hours after you had arrived in the village, the sun having fully set a while ago by the time you crashed into bed, your tired body finally giving up and letting you fall asleep.

Goodness knows that you would need all the rest you could get.

I'm gonna call the thread here. A bit of a short run, but there hasn't been much of a bite this week. And while I can't be sure I think if may just be that much of the audience has grown tired of WWFTT for now, as such I have posted a poll on my twitter on if I should continue WWFTT for now or if I should restart Pilot Quest. Regardless of the outcome of the poll, there will be a thread on schedule this Friday, so it will be either Pilot Quest or WWFTT.

But, as always, if you have any questions then feel free to ask them. And I'll see you next time!

This abbreviation of 'you all' removes the letters 'o' and 'u' from the word 'you'. The rule with apostrophes in abbreviation is to place it where the letters are removed. Thus, you all becomes y'all.
