(Picking up directly from >>2076239)

You hear footsteps outside of the room, and Ivan, Helen, and Roland come by the front.

Ivan: "That is him, yes?"
Roland: "Judging by the fact that he is bound with duct-tape... I would guess so."
Helen: "H-H-H..."

Helen rushes forward, blithely ignoring the laser tripwire.

Albert: 'Wait, don't-"

Just as Helen reaches the tripwire, you hear something short out with a spark, and the light goes out, freely opening up the room. Helen strides forward and punches Joshua in the face, full-force.

Helen: "HOW COULD YOU DO THIS YOU MONSTER!?!?!?!??"
Helen pounds on Joshua's chest with her pale, thin hands, moaning in sadness and pain in between each bout.

Joshua: "Like you-*ghh*- have any ri*sshh*ght to call me owowowowthat."
Roland: "Are you attempting to imply that you have the moral high-ground over us? Typical self-justifying behavior. It gives me hope: perhaps you aren't an incurable psychopath. Maybe you'll be able to feel regret once you're incarcerated for the rest of your natural life."
Ivan: "Maybe, maybe not, it doesn't matter right now."

Ivan walks up to Joshua, gently pulls Helen off of him, and grabs his face by the chin.
Ivan: "Tell us how to leave the island."
Joshua: "I already told you how-"
Ivan: "No. Tell us where the boat you used to get here is. Lead us to that, and in exchange I'll let the police deal with you. Otherwise..."
Joshua: "Look, if I could have escaped already, I wouldn't be here. That piece of shit's trapped me on here with you."
Ivan: "You are one person. We are 15 people. Tell us how to get to your boat."
Joshua: "It's a sub, actually. five-man submersible in the control bunker, which none of us can access with someone inside; it'd be like sticking your hand into a volcano."
Ivan: "So you say."

He turns to you. "I think the rest of you should go away now. I am going to make him tell the truth."

>Shouldn't we at least tell the others?

Albert: "We are not going to torture him, Ivan. It's unlikely that he'll tell us anything useful anyways."
Ivan: "Are you sure? Ah, well, then, I suppose it comes down to the next thing. Now, let's get him to the cafeteria."
Ivan pulls Joshua up by the scruff of his neck and marches him out of the building. You follow, uncertain of what is to come next.

The rest of the group is assembled in the cafeteria when you arrive. You see Henry's face blanch when he sees Joshua's suit, and can hear the metal of his gauntlets clack together as his fist tightens. Joshua's face is completely blank: it's the look of a man walking up the gallows.

Tiago: "So, that's him?"
Giovanna: "The context of Ivan's message indicates only one answer to that."
Roland: "Yes, indeed, this is Scarlet."
Pauline: "So? What are we waiting for? Let's kill the bastard!"
Ivan: "Wait, friend Pauline. Only one of us can leave the island after killing him, and it is the one who does it. I think it is best if one of us with connections leaves."
Henry: "..."
Pauline: "Yeah? Well... I've got tons of connections!"
Ivan: "I was actually thinking of Albert. As a minor celebrity, his word may be trusted by the international community, compared to some others."
Pauline: "But-"
Ivan: "I understand you are scared, friend Pauline, but I have faith that Albert will be able to rescue us all easily."

Ivan turns to look at you, his eyes as hollow as ever.

>It shouldn't be me

>>

>Oh fuck, this was his plan, wasn't it? I knew there'd be a catch.

There's probably something else to it like the winner dies instead of everyone else.
>>
>>2077790
>We shouldn't kill him!
You KNOW there's going to be a cruel twist to this, Ivan. (turn to everyone) Are you seriously considering this? Even after everything we know about Monokuma and how they do things? I'd rather direct B-list actors than even think of killing this man.
>>
>>2077790
>We shouldn't kill him!
A twisted catch is practically inevitable in this deal. Like the killer can leave the island, but then gets killed in the sea, for example. Or the killer leaves and the rest are executed. There's just no way Monokuma would let someone leave and get help for the others.

Albert: "Are you all seriously considering this? Do you really think that the mastermind would just let us leave and get help?"
Ivan: "He said he would, and, well, the mastermind has to keep their word, right?"
Albert: "Perhaps, but there must be a trap here. Monokuma's offering us this as a motive: if we do this, we'll play right into his hands."
Pauline: "...Wha? I mean, can't we just do it anyways? I don't care if it's what he wants, I just want this to be over!"
Henry: "You... you cannot possibly be suggesting we just let this monster live, after what he's done to us?!?!"
Alexandria: "Yeah!"
Tiago: "I agree with Albert."
Albert: "?"
Tiago: "If we kill Scarlet, it's a tacit admission that we're willing to play by the rules of 'kill or be killed'. It will harden us to murder yet again; making the next killing easy. And... this is perfectly in the MO of Ultimate Despair. They use hope as a weapon against itself. Holding out an opportunity like this, to lure us into false hope... that just serves to intensify our despair."
Roland: "I concur. We agreed not to kill him, Ivan!"
Ivan: "Yes, if he had anything useful to say."
Roland: "You never said that-"
Ivan: "It didn't need to be said. Or do you not want to leave, friend Roland?"
Roland: "Of course I want to, but-"
Ivan: "Then it's decided. Friend Roland, you do the honors."
Roland: "I couldn't!-"

Albert: "Aren't you listening? No one's going to be killing anyone!"
Ivan: "Oh, they aren't? And why is that? Because you say 'no'? The last time I checked, we all can do as we wish."
Roy: "...You always act like you're in charge here. You aren't."
Christina H.: "This isn't a good party dynamic right now..."
Roy: "Shut up. I personally don't see any reason to kill Scarlet; we can use him as a human shield, if nothing else."
Helen: "That's... barbaric!"
Roy: "It's necessity-"
Henry: "ENOUGH."
The argument is suddenly cut short as Henry lunges forward, sword driving towards Joshua's neck. Alexandria blurs in response, and the sword goes clattering away as the street fighter pins the armored Henry under the weight of his own armor and launches a quick series of jabs into his face.
Alexandria: "YOU AREN'T STEALING MY TICKET OUT OF HERE!"
Henry: "YOUR TICKET? IS THAT ALL THIS IS TO YOU?"
Henry drives his armored elbow into Alexandria's stomach; she barely flinches, but the force of the strike is enough to give Henry a chance to throw her off of him and go scrabbling for the sword, by your feet.
Both of them pause at the sound of muffled laughter from Joshua.
Joshua: "God, you really are stupid, aren't you? He just won."
Alexandria, Henry; "SHUT UP!"
Joshua: "No. You fools are clearly going to die without me if you're going to act like this, and that probably means I'm going to die, too, so I won't shut up. Like it or not, I'm in the same boat as the rest of you."
Ivan: "No, you are not. Now, shut up."

Albert: "Both of you calm down right now. I want to hear what he has to say." You put your foot on the sword's half, blocking anyone from picking it up.
Joshua: "At least one of you can think. There's only one reason why the mastermind would let me live and put that rule about killing me out there; to divide your group."
Christina H: "It's a zero-sum game, right? Only one of us can claim the prize, so we end up fighting each other over who gets it."
Tiago: "Which weakens the group... as expected of a Remnant of Despair."
Joshua: "And by punching each other, those two meatheads just did exactly what the mastermind wanted. One of you is going to kill again soon, and then we'll be forced to have another class trial."
Ivan: "You mean you will try to kill again unless we kill you first."
Joshua: "No, Svengali: I hate getting my hands dirty, and besides, any of you could beat me in a fair fight. I'm just a load."
Ivan: "Then we should lighten the load, yes?" He turns to face you.
Ivan: "What do you think, Albert? As long as he is alive, there will be a temptation to kill him, but... I must admit, he does seem a bit clever. Since you have appointed yourself in charge, how about you make the decision, leader?"

>Kill him: he's too much of a liability.

Albert: "Put him in my room for now; I'll make sure he doesn't do anything harmful and that no one else tries to kill him."
Ivan: "So, you take responsibility for him, yes? Very well."

Ivan looks at the rest of the group.
Ivan: "I think tomorrow we all should start working on a way off of this island, but, for now..."
Henry: "For now, I will kill this scum-"
Ivan: "Henry, I understand you want justice, and you will have it. Be patient."
Henry seems to calm down a bit with Ivan's chiding, and, eventually, the group disperses, with you leading the bound Joshua to your room. Once there, you push him into a chair.
Albert: "You'll stay there for tonight."
Joshua: "Fine, fine, I suppose I deserve this... I don't suppose you'll unbind me now? It's not like I could beat you in a fight even if I wanted to."

You bend over and rip the duct tape off of Joshua's wrists.
Albert: "Don't think this means I trust you."
Joshua: "Oh, thank God!"
Joshua eagerly peels the tape off of his legs and rushes into your bathroom. He emerges a few minutes later.
Joshua: "You don't know how long I've been fighting to keep that in-"
Albert: "How the hell are you talking to me like that?!"
Joshua: "Like how?"
Albert: "Two days ago, you were trying to kill us, and now, you're acting like we're friends."

Albert: "Yes, because trapping us on a deserted island and telling us the only way to leave is to kill each other just means-"
Joshua: "That I wanted you to have to make hard choices, for once in your lives. Admit it; before now, the hardest choice you probably ever had to make was what kind of expensive imported coffee you wanted to drink in the morning."
Albert:"You don't know a thing about my life! If a film I'm directing doesn't make its budget back, my crew suffers."
Joshua: "But you don't, do you? You know what my biggest worry was when I was 12? Whether I was going to steal enough money to eat one halfway-filling meal that day, or if I was going to have to eat rancid leftovers out of the garbage, or beat a rat to death with a bit of concrete. My 'Ultimate Luck'? It's bullshit. Maybe it kept me alive long enough for Hope's Peak to oh-so-graciously lift me out of the slum I was living in, but it didn't do shit else."

Joshua slumps into the armchair.
Joshua: "Now piss off and let me sleep."

You fall into an uneasy slumber late that night; the presence of Joshua in your room unsettles you deeply...

You jerk awake as the sun hits your eyes through the cockpit window. The steppes of central Russia roll beneath your private jet as it sails towards the FOCUS compound. You wasted days cutting the red tape needed to arrange access to FOCUS; it seems that the facility is so secure, even the head of the Intelligence Division needed a through background check and approval from the 1st, 2nd, and 7th Division Heads to access. Which, you suppose, is more than reasonable; the damage someone could do if the heart of the Future Foundation's secure network was compromised would be incalculable. One of your bodyguards comes up to you with a glass of water and a small oatmeal square; you could have indulged in champagne and prepared French cuisine, but you prefer to eat plainly before working on a case.
Jason Abernackie: "The pilot says we'll be touching down at the compound in an hour, Ma'am. Just let me know if you need anything else."
You smile slightly at him, wave him away with a slight motion of your hand, and make a note to have his yearly physical moved up; his use of sunglasses indoors to conceal his hangover indicates that the alcohol dependency mentioned in his personnel file has suffered a relapse. You have no doubt from his steady hands and even tone even in the midst of a hangover that he'll still be an effective bodyguard, but the long-term effects of his dependency are worrisome. You pull out your FF-issued smartphone and connect to the secure network:

You send a message to the Deputy Director:
D5HQ: EN ROUTE TO FOCUS. UPDATES ON HOPE'S PEAK CASE?
D5VQ: SANFORD RAID WAS A DEAD END: FACILITY IN PACIFIC NORTHWEST WAS EMPTY. OUR INFORMATION WAS WRONG: SANFORD WENT BANKRUPT SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND HAD MOST OF ITS PROPERTIES BOUGHT UP BY THE TOWA CONGLOMERATE. AGENTS ARE ATTEMPTING TO COMPROMISE TOWA GROUP SECURITY NOW, BUT THERE IS A NON-ZERO CHANCE THAT MONACA TOWA IS INVOLVED. INVESTIGATION OF TOWA WILL INVOLVE SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL COST; WILL REVIEW SITUATION WITH 2ND AND 1ST DIVISION WITH YOUR APPROVAL.

Makoto: "...?"
Makoto: "Monokuma? Are you sure?"
Kyoko: "Yes, and I'm not the only one: I know that Byakuya, Toko, Hina, and Yasuhiro received similar messages; did you not receive one?"
Makoto: "I might have, but there was an... incident involving one of the juniors doing some summer work, and the servers have been down since."
Kyoko: "Incident?"
Makoto: "Yeah... long story short, advanced computing systems and insects don't mix."

Kyoko: "I was just trying to lighten the mood. But... you aren't wrong about this being a serious matter."
Makoto:"...You don't think it could be Junko, could it? I mean..."
Kyoko:"It isn't. We have her corpse; at least, the parts the Remnants of Despair didn't cut off. And her brain-scan is completely isolated from any AI system, so we know that it cannot be that, either."
Maktoto:"Yeah... I guess you're right. I mean, it wasn't like the last time we saw Monokuma, it was Junko, either."
Kyoko:"Whoever this is, I will uncover them, don't worry. And afterwards... I'll take a few days off and come over for the opening ceremony."
Makoto: "I really hope it's that easy. That'd be nice, for once..."
Kyoko:"Yeah. Well, I'll have to turn my cellphone off in a bit, so... I'll see you soon."
Makoto:"See you."
You don't hang up your call reluctantly; you're in control of yourself, after all. But that doesn't mean you want to hang up on him.

FUTURE FOUNDATION EXECUTIVE OVERVIEW: FOCUS COMPOUND, SCANDINAVIAN PENINSULA
AREA: 500 ACRES
POPULATION: 3,000, INCLUDING SUPPORT STAFF
FOCUS IS THE NERVE CENTER OF THE FUTURE FOUNDATION'S INFORMATION NETWORK, AND THE HEAD OFFICE OF THE 7TH DIVISION. THE FUTURE FOUNDATION INTERNAL ARCHIVES ARE STORED ON BOTH SOLID-STATE DRIVES AND ON PHYSICAL COPIES IN A SECURE VAULT WITHIN FOCUS; OTHER NOTEWORTHY OBJECTS IN THE FACILITY INCLUDE ONE OF THE ONLY THREE EXTANT COMPUTER SYSTEMS CAPABLE OF RUNNING THE NEO WORLD PROGRAM, THE GLOBAL NETWORK OVERWATCH AND SECURITY INTELLIGENT SERVITOR (GNOSIS) MACHINE, AND A PROTOTYPE QUANTUM COMPUTER, CODE-NAMED "PALANTIR".
The rest of the file goes into precise breakdown of funding, site history, and various other minutiae; you give them a brief once-over and download the file to your phone for future reference.

A quantum computer? You hadn't heard of this development before. Your understanding of the topic leads you to believe that a quantum computer could handle exponentially more computations than even the most sophisticated supercomputer while using only a fraction of the power. If true, this sort of computer could be extremely valuable...

Your musings are interrupted by your bodyguard.
Jason Abernackie: "We're about to into descent, ma'am."
Kyoko: "Oh, we are? Good."
You turn off your phone and buckle yourself in for the descent. Five minutes later, you've wrapped yourself in a thick coat and are striding across the tarmac towards FOCUS.
The central building of the compound resembles a pentagonal pyramid of concrete in the Brutalist fashion, with small windows peeping out of abcesses in the material. The building looks to be about 40 feet in height, but, to your understanding, there are several subterranean floors as well.
The site director of FOCUS and an assistant are out on the runway when you arrive; the director's glasses are slightly fogged from his breath in the cold, and his long, blonde hair is pulled back in a ponytail, but he still gives you a friendly smile and wave as you approach. The assistant nods slightly and continues reviewing something on a tablet; despite his age, he has grey hair of medium length, with two strange cowlick-like tufts near the crown that slightly resemble the horns of a goat. Both of them are dressed in official Foundation attire.
Mikko Hypponen: "Ah, Director Kirigiri! Welcome to our little compound!"
Kyoko: "Thank you, Director Hypponen. I didn't expect such a personal greeting from you."
Mikko Hypponen: "Well, to be quite honest, I was very curious when I heard the head of the Intelligence division would be conducting a personal investigation of my site!... Is there a reason for this? I'm afraid my superior didn't see fit to brief me..."

>To be honest, I was looking for an excuse to get out of the office
>Your systems may have been compromised. I'm here to find out how.

Kyoko: "I have good reason to believe that your system has been compromised by an outside party and used to send threats covertly to Future Foundation members. I'm here to find out how they did it, and who they are."
Director Hypponen: "A compromise? In FOCUS? That's extremely unlikely; it's more probable that a remote unit elsewhere was hacked and these messages were sent through our hub: we cannot do a personal deep-packet examination of every set of data that passes through the network on a given day, and GNOSIS, although an AI, is limited in what it can search for."
Kyoko: "You shouldn't be so dismissive of the possibility: and even if you're right, your staff can help backtrace the message to the infected unit, yes?"
Director Hypponen: "Of course, of course: anything to help ensure the Future Foundation's internal security."

The odd-looking assistant of Hypponen looks up from his pad.
???: "Director, your 3:00 appointment with Human Resources? About the UV lights?"
Director Hypponen: "Oh, damn! Forgot all about that! Listen, Nagi, push it back; I want to be free to help Director Kirigiri however I can."

>No need for that: I'm certain I can begin my investigation on my own
>Thank you, Director Hypponen
>What's this about UV lights?

Kyoko: "There's no need for that, but I would like an answer about why you want UV lights installed."
Director Hypponen: "Oh, that is an easy question. It has to do with-"
Kyoko: "SAD, yes?"
Hypponen: "It seems you already know, then."
Kyoko:"It's quite obvious, when you think about it. Finland is located at a polar extreme, which means that during the winter months, there can be as few as 6 hours of sunlight per day. In addition, the very nature of the FOCUS compound means that few employees get much exposure to sunlight on any given day: the walk between the habitation blocks and the various facilities is likely their only chance to get sunlight; and, in months where the sun sets in the early afternoon, that can lead to employees going for weeks without sunlight. This leads to depressed mood as a result: Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD."
Director Hypponen: "Yes, and the best way to treat both SAD, and the vitamin D imbalance caused by low exposure to sunlight, is through a light therapy. But how did you know that it was SAD, and not, say, that I needed them as part of a disinfectant regime?"
Kyoko: "If you needed UV lighting for use as an antiviral or antibacterial agent, you wouldn't be talking with your Human Resources department."
Director Hypponen: "As expected of the head of the Intelligence Division! Nothing gets by you! I wonder why you even asked?"
Kyoko: "I wanted to confirm my suspicions."
Director Hypponen:"Well, they are confirmed. Now, if you wish to speak with me after the meeting, I will be in my office or overseeing the programming team, most likely. I will leave my capable assistant, Nagisa, to assist you."

Nagisa bows to you: low enough to indicate respect, but not so low that it seems insulting. His voice is a quiet, feminine monotone, and his eyes are dark and serious. You can tell he has seen horrible things in his life; the kind that leave you a different person afterwards.
Nagisa: "Director Kirigiri, I am honored to meet you. I will assist you to the best of my ability in your inquiry."

Kyoko: "...Have I seen you before?"
Nagisa: "Of course you have; you have access to the personnel files of all employees at this station, and I was labeled a member of Ultimate Despair during the Tragedy. I can only assume you already knew this when asking me, so that must mean..."
Kyoko/Nagisa:"I/You need to know if I/you can trust you/me."
Nagisa: "Obviously, you can: my... involvement with the Warriors of Hope... I won't say anything tacky, like 'If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't', as that is worthless sentiment. But I will assure you that my goals are completely aligned with your own; I joined the Future Foundation after my pardon because I want to make the world a better place, and the Future Foundation is the most effective organization enacting that goal. The fact that someone could compromise the system here..."
Nagisa: "Do you think it could be her?"
There's a slight stutter in Nagisa's tone when he says "her".
Kyoko: "I'm not sure yet, but you can help by retrieving metadata on all messages that were sent to my work computer in the past week."
Nagisa: "Of course."
Nagisa manipulates his pad for several minutes, then turns it to face you. Displayed is a tabulated list of IP addresses and the attached messages.
Nagisa: "As you can see, all of the messages initially appear to check out; however, after closer examination, this one right here..."
Kyoko: "What's wrong with it?... I must admit, I'm rusty on the finer details of IT."
Nagisa: "There's nothing wrong with it per se, but for two things. First, it's connected to a FF ID that isn't in use; it's valid, but there isn't an actual employee attached to the number. Secondly... the security data is nonsense. It looks like someone just... slung code together at random."

>Camouflage, maybe?
>Whoever did this is good with code... I want to take a look at your on-site employee database.
>It sounds like someone in HR made a fake ID; I want to talk to them.
>This could have been injected directly onto the hub, yes? I want to examine it in person.
