Eight Month of 285 AC, Gulltown, The Vale
Powder Storage – 2910 shots worth
Funds – 2607.5 Silver Stags

On the last thread you finished delivering the rogue knight Randar to Gulltown, made some serious money and had about a week off during which you designed plans for a moonshine still as well as a makeshift temperature gauge, which you haven't gotten around building yet.

After a week of studying, you decided to get some better equipment for the crew, acquiring some padded armor and shields for your crew and sent out your quartermaster Devran to go look for some new recruits whilst you checked out the the local trading guild for employment.

During your search for employment you made a discovery. Nobody wants to talk to some no-name youngster that's dressed up in a gambeson, so you made an effort to make yourself look more representable and you managed to get an interview for a dangerous shipping job to areas where the
Mountain Clans have been the most active. They have claimed several ships already.

The pay wasn't great, but they said they'll let you know the moment the fleet returns to Gulltown after which you'll negotiate upon the last details of the contract before setting sail.

[1/2]
You returned from the interview wearing your posh clothes to be greeted by your Quartermaster Devran.
"So, how'd it go with the guild Captain?"
You sigh and give a shrug at Devran
"Could have gone better, but I did get us booked for a job on a route that the Mountain clans like to attack frequently."
Devran rubs his eyes
"Fuck. Well, I hope they're at least paying us well."
You shake your head
"Overall what they're offering is less than what we've been making with our previous employers thus far if we don't distinguish ourselves in battle and earn those bonuses protecting the fleet."
Devran sighs
"Suppose there isn't much chance of that happening is there? We don't exactly have any trained fighters on board and we lack any form of true ship-to-ship weaponry."
"On that point, how'd it go with the recruits?"
"Not too well Captain. Found only about 10 rowers willing to join."
"And the Chef and the Combat Trainer?"
"I'll still have to look for those. Few people willing to sail under the sails of a heathen captain with no name to himself. Fewer still agree to sail without a roof on top of their heads without knowing the destination."
"Shit, I was hoping to have some good news on that regard."
"I still have to break the news to the crew. You did sort of promise them easy money when they joined your crew and thus far you've provided what you promised. It's very real possibility that they might demand extra for dangerous work."

"Tell them that I haven't exactly signed anything yet and if we can think of something better before the fleet shows up, we could always do that. It's still entirely possible that something better might turn up."
"So when's the fleet supposed to show and pick us up?"
"Yesterday"
"Fuck. That's not good. Either there was a storm or..."
"Or they're dead or delayed otherwise, yea."
Devran puts his palm on his forehead.
"Look, we can't spend these days being half-assed. You need to either get us a better job or we need to start get our boys ready for a fight. These aren't some swamp rabble we're going up against. These are Mountain Clans, Wild Savages that practice cannibalism and kidnap women into their rape caves if the tales are to be believed. These are men who have made Raiding not just their profession, but also a way of life."

What is your plan?

>Commence Operation Ribauldequin [ We've need to increase our firepower FAST. Let's rent out a forge and start making some barrels. We'll make some volley guns to keep the savages away from our ships. (Cost: 9 Gold Dragons a piece to manufacture a 10 barrel swivel mounted Ribauldequin)]

>Commence Operation I'm-too-good-for-this-job [ Fuck the guild. I'll go look for a better job. I there's still that Captain's club, the less than legal work and the nobility. I'll just go ask around for a job that doesn't involve godless savages. ]

>Commence Operation Feel-the-Bern [ Let them have lots of free stuff so that you can silence your opposition and go through with this operation anyway. ]

>Commence Operation White Lightning [ You know what? Fuck shipping goods. I should just finish off that still, head to the castle, find some investors, build a distillery, sell the company for profit, pay off the debts and keep the difference.]

>Commence Operation Write In [ You have some random dude in the internet come up with his own idea ]

At the very least we can check what the less legal jobs were and maybe do one or two while we wait for the fleet and to get our crew more experience.

>>
>>2080035

>>
>>2080038
We don't have tower-shields. More so traditional round-shields.

But aye two of these "Ribauldequin" seeing as we will most likely need to fire on more than one ship.
>>
File: Ribauldequin.png (494 KB, 526x860)
494 KB
494 KB PNG
Ribauldequin overall isn't a very long range weapon nor does it fire very fast.
The advantage of this weapon however is that units hit by Ribauldequins need to pass a willpower save in order to not get disorganized even if the damage doesn't force them into such a state.

Units that are disorganized take -1D to all checks until they reorganize themselves.
However, it does a long time to reload and should not be used until you need to severely discourage an enemy.
It is entirely possible that these weapons may only end up being fired only once during a fight.
>>
>>2080043
Yeah...they seem shit. I'm going back to supporting:

>Commence Operation I'm-too-good-for-this-job [ Fuck the guild. I'll go look for a better job. I there's still that Captain's club, the less than legal work and the nobility. I'll just go ask around for a job that doesn't involve godless savages. ]

Cause working for criminals is probably better paying, is safer and is almost certainly quicker.
>>
>>2080043
>>2080051
So those are more like shotguns than Chainguns
Maybe that is even better (in some way), depends of the size of the barrels

producing a canon/bombarda is way to costly and to hi-tech for now
>>
>>2080038
It should be pointed out that affixing shields to muzzle loaders isn't a good idea since whenever you're reloading, you sort of need to move in front of the shield.

It works wonderfully with breech loading cannons however, which is exactly why in the 1700's despite the much closer range of the fighting, they still did not put any armoring into their field guns even though they were the most expensive pieces of equipment on the field.
>>
>>2080000
>[X] Commence Operation I'm too good for this job

Also I'd be in favor of operation White Lightning
>>
>>2080055
They are volley guns.
Just like the name says, you can crank up an extra volley in an emergency. Or several, if you've got more than one, but it takes about 5 turns until it's ready to fire again.
>>
>>2080061
>it takes about 5 turns until it's ready to fire again.
And they need how many crew for maximum firerate? Would 2 a piece be plenty?
>>
>>2080067
2 people is the maximum you'd really need.
You can still operate it with just 1 guy if you want to, like if you wanted to have one guy focus on aiming and one guy focus on reloading.

You can also save the use of field guns like this for the non-marine crews.
Also, you don't necessarily have to accept the dangerous trade route to get ribauldequins. You can order Devran to start making the barrels anyhow.
>>
>>2080095
Oh that isn't why I'm inquiring.

I was just considering the fact that we have 10 people dedicated to rowing, who in combat, could be made to act as gunners.

Which gives us enough crew for 5 of these things, at a cost of 45 gold assuming we can't get a discount from the volume we are producing and such.
>>
>>2080114
You won't get a discount for producing them.
Still, 50 barrels is a bit of a steep order, not that it can't be done, you might just need to borrow some apprentices for swinging the hammers to get the job done quick enough to get the volley guns done in like 10 days minimum.

You'd probably have to toss in a bit extra for the rushed order, but considering the overall size of the investment, it's not a very large amount of money in contrast.

We can afford a few of these and if we wait until the enemy are fairly close we just unleash one of these badboys into a cluster of enemies.

and I would like 4.

Apparently 2 would probably be enough, and 3 would be safeish but 4 is affordable and makes it something that won't be an issue for a while and allows us to commandeer an enemy ship and place one or two on it.

Guys there is a reason that 5 is the ideal number: we can fire one every combat turn and it means our rower-crew who lack any combat experience have a purpose during combat.

Any more than that and we have inconsistent firepower and a lack of free manpower to man them.

I'll put my faith in your calculations.
Pic kind of related.
>>
>>2081767
Well I'll admit I am hardly at 100% today so I doubt my numbers are entirely correct. Essentially, it takes five turns for a volley-gun to reload which means that with five of them, you should be able to maintain constant fire until the crews tire, ammo runs out, the guns break from the constant firing or generally something fucks up.

However this is based off the assumption that the gun begins being reloaded the turn it is fired. That it takes "five turns to reload" including the turn of firing. Otherwise we need six of them. Should that be the case then we'll need another two crew to make use of them. View the attached image for a visual explanation I've thrown together in paint.

Simply put it's just there because you're generally speaking situated in the back steering the boat.
It's for the ease of access to the captain if needed because your warfare skill is better than the crew's.

Also, you can use it as a mutiny gun.

[1/2]

You thought to yourself which would be the best option. It was entirely possible that you simply couldn't be able to find any better jobs. Like, it could be that this is it.
Additionally, you do need to add more firepower to your ship eventually as 30 muskets aren't that frightening, so you might as well get to it now.

"Let's rent up some some forges then. We've some work to do. I'm going to need about 50 barrels done as soon as possible."
Devran starts smiling
"Longship armed with 80 barrels of death. It'll eat on our powder storages when we unleash that on anyone who thinks themselves hard enough."
He puts a finger on his chin
"Provided we get access on ingots of wrought iron and forges immediately we'll ought to be able to get it done within two weeks, provided there's no delays. I will need some serious funds for this operation though."
"You have it. Find me a workshop we can rent as well as some helping hands for the hammers. I'll head up to the carpenters and make an order for the parts we need made."
He pats you on the back.
"It's a plan."

Devran managed to find some retired blacksmith's workshop to rent for a few weeks, a man gone almost deaf by both old age and the sound of hammers. He also managed to find and borrow some swole apperentices from the nearby forges for the hammerwork as you visited the local carpenter's guild and made the order for the wood parts.

The following days were filled with forging of barrels for you, Devran and the apperentices. Whilst you were working, you got to know them a little bit better. Apparently one of them was a bastard of some noble house or the other. One called Janos Stone, lad of about 15 years or so. They never told him which house his father belonged to.
The whole thing was kept very quiet-like. His father had apparently paid to get him accepted as an apperentice when he was still in his mother's womb.

It was his first time talking to a bonafide nobleman in person. He was quite impressed how you were both a Captain of your own ship and a skilled smith at such a young age. It looked like he was feeling pretty proud of being a half-noble after your exchange.

It was hastily made work, but with smart good division of labor and eager workmen, the barrels started to pile up. Naturally, the apperentices were only involved in the actual shaping of the barrels. The welding work was done by you and Devran. Some of the tools you needed to bring from your ship in order to adhere to the standard of the rest of the barrels.

By the 7th day, the carpenter's guild showed up with their works. The finish was rough, but the measurements were correct so you did not have any problems even if they didn't look too pretty.
>>
[2/2]

On the 9th day of work however, one of your crew approached you.
"Captain, some fellow from the Guild wishes to see you, something about the fleet returning and the shipping job you were booked for?"
"Shit. We're almost done, but we need at least a couple of days more time. Devran, you keep on working, I'll go and buy us some time."

Right, better not look like a murderhobo before I head in there. They seem to like to keep up their appearances and all. You swap out of your smithing leathers, clean yourself of the soot and and put on your noble clothes.

As you entered the guild, you saw a grizzled captain arguing with the clerk. He was surrounded by four meanest looking sailors you ever saw.
"Just as I told ye! 2 Fucking ships lost! Aye need Captains that can handle themselves in a fight! Not these pansy landlubbers who shit themselves at the first sign of trouble."
The Clerk, clearly nervous of the intimidating looking gentlemen tries her best to calm him down.
"Please calm down Captain Sark. As I told you, the guild will do it's best to get you the best ships and captains it can within a reasonable timeframe."
His facial expressions changed like the weather at those words, calming into a friendly smile. Whether it was madness or simply sarcastic pretense, you could not tell.
"Well go on then, tell us of these Captains you've gotten for us."
The clerk starts to look more uncomfortable at each passing moment
"There's... Captain Locke of the Broomer."
The Captain's eye twitches as he hears the name.
"Locke is a cunt who won the ship in a gamble. Who else have you got for me?"
"There's Captain Lazoros of the Firebrand"
He rubs his eye
"That cunt is a fucking fireworshipper. Who else have you got?"
The Clerk starts to look desperate as the Captain's disapproval rises.
"Last one of the available Longships belongs to an Ironborn sailor."
"Ironborn sailor? That seems promising. Go on."
She starts to look relieved as if she just found what her client wanted to hear.
"Yes, the Captain's name is Eddard Manden. He is captaining a ship called 'the Long Night'."
The Captain face changed to a serious one and his eyes were like a brewing storm.
"You don't mean to tell me he's related to Manderik the Motherfucking Manslayer?"
"Erhmm... I would not know. You'd have to ask him."

This is a juicy opportunity for a dynamic entry that you simply can't let go to waste. You pull out your pistol from it's holster and point it to the ceiling. Fuck, this is going to be loud. Normally shooting indoors without ear protection isn't a good idea, but goddamn this is going to be fucking worth it.

*BOOOM!*
Fuck-damn that smarts

Everyone in the building flinched and began holding their ears and suddenly all eyes in the building began looking at you with confusion looking smug as all hell, pointing your pistol in the air. Even the Guildmaster rushed from his office to see what the fuck was going on.
You slide your gun back to it's holster walk past the Captain and his lackeys who are looking at you and each other confused.

"I believe the guild requested my presence."
She tries here best not to look at you in the eyes as you seat yourself comfortably in front of her desk, much like Darksied goes and sits on other people's couches without asking for permission.
"Err... yes, the umm... fleet has returned and will be preparing. For the voyage. That is, if you still are planning on joining."
You can feel the captain staring holes into the back of your head.
"Yes, that is why I am here. Although sadly, I must inform you that the outfitting of siege weapons on my longship for the journey will take a few more days."
She doesn't look too comfortable over the subject of an ironborn longship armed with siege weapons sailing on her coasts.
"Erm... you don't need to worry about that. It's fine, it's fine. It will take few days to just get the goods off Captain Sark's fleet. Feel free to use those days however you like! If you needs some more time, just talk to Captain over there."
She tries to push you off as his responsibility.
"My thanks. Captain. If you don't mind, I've some work to do."
You give a nod off to the grizzled man as you trod off before turning around.
"Oh, and here's some silvers for the roof. Have a pleasant day."
You toss her a small bag of silver and walk outside past the guards who are now looking at you very suspiciously. It was more than enough to pay for the repairs. That should keep you from getting arrested for putting a hole in their roof.

You return to the forge and get back to work on finishing off the volley guns.
"Right, I went and explained our situation to the guild and got us some more time from the guild. They told us that if we need more time, we negotiate with the fleet Captain."
Devran keeps his eye on his work as he talks to you.
"That's good. We need these things done before we set off."
"Oh, by the way, do you happen to know anyone called Captain Sark?"
"Nope, never heard of him. Why?"
"Well, he seems to know my father somehow."
He stops ceases his work and stops to think
"Hmmm.... Honestly can't remember. Sorry. Wasn't that close with your father."
"Well, I guess that makes two of us. Right, back to work then."

After couple of days, the parts were finally done and were ready to be installed on your vessel. As you were transporting the goods back to your ship for final assembly, a young lad came to see you.
"Message from Captain Sark to Captain Eddard! He says to meet him at the Captain's Lounge once you're done for the day."
You toss a copper to the kid and send him off.

"Right boys, let's get these things installed. We don't got all day."

The swabbies looked a bit confused of these contraptions whilst your old mates seemed to be visibly impressed of the weapons. With the volley guns being visible for all the world to see, there's no longer any purpose in keeping the muskets hidden under the boards. Instead, they're now kept under a gun rack in the middle of the ship. Despite the primitive design of the ship, it's starting to look like a contemporary military vessel.

You've lost 45 Gold! You now have 44 gold!
Your ship now has 5 Volley guns and 30 muskets!

With both barrels empty and no retinue of your own covering you, you're soon overwhelmed by the guards and taken to the dungeon.

You stand accused of murder and disruption of public order.
You are given two choices.

You request a trial by combat, but since you committed your crime in broad daylight with plenty of witnesses and since you are of such a low political importance that there's no repercussions, he does not feel like granting you a trial by combat is in any way necessary.

Your guilt is without question.

You attempt to create a conspiracy in your prison cell, but the rats and insects remain unconvinced of your arguments. Perhaps they have a Warg somewhere interfering with your schemes or perhaps the language barrier is simply too much to overcome.

Perhaps they are all working for the Bogdanoffs and seek to bring about your end in order to usher in a new world order ruled by an iron fisted interdimensional regime of hyperintelligent super mutants.

Regardless, you know that these pests will voluntarily remain unconcerned as they will not live to see the repercussions of their actions. They only care about their petty rivalries as they fight over territory in this dank cell.

>Head to the Captain's Lounge and see what Captain Sark wants.
[1/2]

You decide to head off to the Captain's Lounge to meet this Captain Sark.
The entrance alone seems to reflect the high profile nature of the establishment. The Building is gated behind a brick and iron fencing. Though not excessively large, a great deal of money has obviously been sunk into the construction and decor of this social club which is reflected in it's employees. Six warriors clad in coats of plate armed with billhooks are standing in guard outside the establishment wearing equipment that even you would consider of good quality.

As you approached the opulent building the guards locked eyes with you. One of them greets you in a deep and severe tone.
"State your business young man."
"I am here behest the invitation of Captain Sark."
He looks at you a bit skeptically.
"One moment please."
He puts two fingers in his mouth and whistles sharply. Soon after a young, well dressed servant boy rushes at the gates. "You called mister?"
"Go check if Captain Sark invited one... What was your name again?"
"Captain Eddard"
"You heard him."
The little gopher sprints to the door and makes his way inside. In a few moments he peeks from one of the windows and gives a thumbs up.
"Alright, go in then. Cause no trouble."

You walk through the Iron gate onto the terrace where several men of higher status seem to be enjoying the evening with Wine and Steak. The Servant boy rushes to greet you "This way please." As you followed the boy through the stone building, your thoughts began to trail off. After making a first impression like like that, how could you possibly top that off? What sort of expectations would he have of you after seeing you show off like that? Still, it you can't put a price on an entrance like that.
Your thoughts were cut off as you reached your destination.
"Right through here please." The little servant boy said after knocking and opening the door for you.

Inside you were greeted with the sight of several Captain Sark sitting on the table with various other men in various states of dress enjoying lavish meals and ribbing on eachother as you enter.

"Come on Sark, how many ship has it been thus far? Shouldn't you leave that route to the better Captains? You clearly cannot handle it."
"Oh that's rich coming from you Locke. Last time I checked you've lost more ships than me."
"When you gamble, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose."
"And since when isn't sailing a gamble as well then?"

For a moment you began to think this would be a great time to redo what you did at the guildhall, but at that moment the dark haired, grey-eyed man who had this unnerving vibe going for him stood up.
"It seems that the last Captain of the Long Night has decided to grace us with his presence."
At that, Locke and Sark stopped bickering.

"I believe introductions are in order. I am Captain Stallonos of the Shining Light and these-"
"We can talk for ourselves Stan. Captain Sark of the Brazen. Used to sail with your father back in the day."
"I am Captain Lazoros of the Firebrand, adherent of the Lord of Light and a-"
"and cunt who don't know when to shut up. NEXT!"
"I'm Melvin, I Captain the Merryheart. Good to meet you."
"Captain Locke of the Broomer."
"Captain Eddard Manden, son of Manderik Manden the Manslayer, Captain of the Long Night."
The rest of the captains look at you a bit oddly.

"So, let's talk about what each of our ships bring to the table."
Melvin raises his hand. "If you guys don't mind, I'd rather abstain from the violence if at all possible. My crew aren't exactly warriors."
Sark scoffs
"I think that nobody ever expected anything from you in that department Melvin." Locke adds.
Lazaros rises his hand.
"My ship is armed with a rotating spitfire, we can throw either burning oil or pitch at our foes if need be as well as 10 warriors of the fiery hand and 40 seasoned sailors."
Locke decides to chip in.
"I think that your little firethrower will not be particularily useful in river fighting."
Sark nods "I agree with the cheating cunt. Speaking of whom..."
Locke gives the stink eye to Sark as he states smugly"I've 40 crossbowmen aboard my ships and a scorpion."
Sark returns the stink eye with his own.
"At least all of my men know how to fight when the mountain cunts come bearing down at us instead of being helpless the moment we get boarded. My ship's never lost a boarding battle."
All eyes turn to you.
"Now then, what does the Captain of the Long Night bring to the table?"

Anyhow by the time we've got the resources to afford that, we're probably going to be a major player with a huge army and at that point I'd rather not give anyone under us that heavy of a firepower advantage seeing as we'd be busy designing new shit and managing our nation.

If we make a fleet of them then no individual one of our captains is going to have the firepower advantage to turn on us.

Percussion caps? Highly doubt we would even be able to properly visualize the concept IC, Im pretty sure we are opperating off of a matchlock system. Rifling would probably be way more doable, as would conical projectiles. The physics behind them would have been long documented by now.
>>
>>2086955
You cannot make rifled muskets without proper workshop as you do need to design a suitable lathe for it.
Same thing applies to percussion caps as well. You cannot really make them without a base of operations.

How about Storm Hailer for the Volley guns because of the hail of bullets and the cloud of smoke and Thunderers for the muskets for the sound they make?

Consider we're Ironborn.
There's already rumors about us being literally the anti-christ insofar as Ironborn religion goes.

Bare in mind that our protagonist has all his past-life memories from our world (which is how he was able to build guns in the first place), so I imagine that he already knows the basic principle of percussion caps, he just needs to work out the practicalities (much like the modern still we're trying to design).

But yes, in terms of improving our guns; rifling should be the priority.

The purpose of this meeting is to determine what sort of fleet formation you guys are going to use when you hit the danger zone.

If you're going to act coy instead of putting your cards on the table, they WILL blame you for any losses the fleet takes due to you omitting facts.

You give them a shrewd smile

You roll your eyes and pull out one of your pistols.
"My crew primarily utilizes this type of weapons."
He looks at the device within your hand.
"Seems like elaborate worksmanship, but what is it supposed to do besides be a fancy club?"
You put the pistol back into your holster.
"Same thing that your scorpion does. It kills people through shields and armor, the key difference is that mine fits into a pocket and doesn't need a crew to man it."
The Captains look at you skeptically
"I'll believe that when I see it."
"How about a bet then? 5 Gold Dragons say that the standard issue ranged weapons of my crew will rip through any suit of armor you can procure and through a shield no less."
Locke seems amused at the prospect.
"I like you kid. You're on. I'll take that bet, anyone else joining in on this?"
Captain Stallonos raises his hand.
"You've got my interest young man. I am in. Provided you accomplish this feat without a siege weapon, I don't mind paying you 5 Gold Dragons to see you do it."
Locke looks
"How about you guys? Sark, Lazoros?"
Lazoros puts out his hand.
"Man should not gamble with his blessings."
Sark bites his thumb
"Oh, that's right? You're broke aren't you?"
He looks at you and narrows his eyes and studies your features.
"10 Gold says you lose Locke. How about that?"
Locke waves his hand

He smirks
"I am a master navigator. My ship is primarily armed with archers as well as my personal guard consisting of four bravos from the Free Cities. They are quite good at fighting aboard ships."
"I should very much like to hear tales of the Free Cities at a later date, if you have the time."
"Oh? Planning on making a trip to Essos?"
You shrug
"Possibly at some point. Not too likely until I graduate from my longship."
The other captains gave you a strange look as you said that
"Oh dear.."
"Hmm?"
Sark looks uncomfortable of the subject and decides to speak out.
"Being a freesail is dangerous business. Trade Princes and the Spicer Guilds really, really dislike the newcomers. They're generally speaking in bed with the Pirates. I once had a crack at trying to run spices. Lost a lot of good men trying to do that and lost a damn good ship too. It's a long story. Story that doesn't have a happy ending. Maybe one day I'll tell you the rest of it."
Apparently Spicers and Trade Princes are something you should beware of if you try to sail on their lanes. That's a good thing to know.

After everyone had their fill to eat, the meeting was concluded and your entourage moved to the docks. As you left the Captain's Lounge, you noticed something. All of these Captains had their own entourages who followed them everywhere. Maybe it was expected of them as a show of status or something. Maybe they all had enough enemies that it was warranted? It does give them a lot more prestigious atmosphere.

Locke had one of his men go fetch a chestpiece made of lamellar armor he claims he won in a gamble from a Qohorian sellsword. It certainly was a piece of decent quality as far as the armors you've seen. Definitely above a suit of maille. He also brought some crossbows from his collection and some bolts because he thought it'd be fun to shoot all sorts of things.

You took a piece of shoreline from side of the docks to have your little shooting practice in. Stallonos tipped off the guards to see that you wouldn't be bothered when you had your fun. You also mentioned that it might get a bit loud.

One of Locke's men went and put up some fruit as well as the suit of armor for you to shoot at from the docks. You got men from all crews watching. The captains had set up a table with some chairs as well as a box on the docks from atop which they could shoot the assorted targets on the beach.

"Alright then youngster, let's see that strange weapon of yours in action."
Stlalonos says to you whilst enjoying wine from his goblet.
"I'm ok with taking gold too."
Locke laughs as he takes
"Come on lad! Make me some money!"
Sark yells from his seat.
Melvin is just sitting there enjoying the free wine.

Your shot echoes throughout the docks like the sound of thunder as the ball speeds through the barrel, ripping through both air and armor straight at the heart of your hapless foeman, striking the target with such force that it pushed one of the scales right through the back.
As the smoke cleared, you knew your shot had been true.

Locke, still nursing his ears after the sudden loud noise asks.
"You want to try again? Did it not work properly or something?"
You look at him strangely as you took a moment to process that question.
"No, it did what it's supposed to. It went straight through the chest."
Stallonos quickly stands up and pulls out his Myrish lenses to inspect what had you wrought.
"There's a hole straight through the chest. One of the scales is missing."
"Let me see."
Locke grabs the lenses and sees his armor perforated.
"Go check the damage."

One of his crew rushed to the target went to have a look. He took one look at behind the target and then decided to turn the suit of armor around to show it to the spectators in the docks.
"It seems there's a hole in the back as well." Stallonos remarks
Locke looks at you with
"Fucking hell, how does that work? You just point that thing and it makes holes?"
You shrug
"That's the gist of it, more or less."
"And... how many did you have these again?"
"About 30 of these specifically. There's also the 10 barreled beasts I just finished installing."
"Fucking hell, you planning to start a war or something? Where did you even get these?"
At this point, you see a dark silken purse flying to your direction and you instinctively catch it.
"5 Golden Dragons, as agreed."
Locke starts rummaging through his coinpurse as well.
"Aww hell... I guess I have to pay up."
He puts 5 gold dragons on the table.
At that point Sark perks up. "Didn't you forget something you cunt?"
"Like what?"
"We had a bet as well."
"I shall deduct that from your debts. You still owed me 20 from the last time. Now you only owe me 10."
"You moneygrubbing little shit."
"How about double or nothing? If you can shoot a crossbow better than me, I'll forgive your debt entirely."
"You're on shitcheeks."
"The rest of you want in on this?"
Stallonos scoffs
"Sure thing, I bet to you that Sark will lose horribly in this contest."
"Oh fuck you Stan!" Sark yells out
Locke waves his hand
"Fine, fine, no money then, but let's have a contest anyway. Loser pays drinks or something boring like that."

Each of you picked a crossbow from one of Locke's collection and started shooting. While you and Locke were more or less scoring the same, Sark thought it'd be a good idea to try and make sure that the loser has to pay as much as possible for the drink, so he gorged himself on wine.
Tactically speaking this didn't seem like a great move, but drunk as he was, he still managed to tie with Stallonos.

>You: 19
>Locke: 19
>Melvin: 20

"HAHAHAHA! Howsit feel Locke? You lost to fucking MELVIN of all people!"
"Oh go fuck yourself Sark you old sack of shit. You lost to him as well."
"Aye, but I was drunk! You lost to him sober you sorry cunt! HAH!"
Locke kicks him off the pier.
"YOU DONE IT NOW YOU SWINDLING FUCK!"

As Locke and Sark were squabbling, you notice Stallonos looking at your musket mesmerized. He notices you looking at him and speaks.
"From my understanding, magic was supposed to be almost completely dead this far west. Even during it's glory days, I believe Magic wasn't a thing used so brazenly."
You shrug, not knowing what to say to that.
"If you don't mind telling me, I would love to hear the tale of how you came to acquire these artifacts and how they function. I should also like to purchase one if you are willing to depart with one of them."

>>

Short-term?
Turn a good profit as a captain with a boat for hire.
Medium-term?
Not sure. Maybe set up our own proper work-shop to build up our technology base while selling some of our 'inventions' as a source of income (while keeping the best toys to ourselves, of course).
Long term?
Your guess is as good as mine. Global conquest, perhaps?
Pic possibly related.

>>2091560
Become a powerful captain with many ships under our command equipped with advanced powder weapons and manned by loyal competent sailors running as many trade routes as we can.

Then, when the GOT story-line kicks, get involved either seizing land or getting even more rich as a mercenary captain. That or we attempt to takeover the pillars by creating a network of fortifications that can destroy any trade through it that doesn't pay which'd basically make us a pirate-lord.

After that? Conquest, unification, advancement and legislation.

Do we really have the power to defend our selves from a Lord that finds these awesome and wants them at all costs.
For now we can say we fpubd it with the recipe to make the ingrediants to fire. And we sell the bullets and powder as well. Make some nice change on top of the bet. We will likely need to upgrade these guns next time we have money and some time to our selves anyway.

Short Term = Get some more funds and a safe haven/base

I like the long term idea of ruling the Stepstones and the trade routes that flow through it a lot better. A lot of power and money without having to deal with big powerful vassals. Our technical advantage would be greater on the seas because there is no cover and with steamships we could outgun and outrun the enemy ships. With land forces we're easier to overwhelm with sheer numbers
>>
>>2091665
Trying to construct a steamship is going to be a very difficult process because the tools and machinery to manufacture machinery of that size simply do not exist.

There is also the problem of manufacturing jobs in general. You can't just pick random bums from the street. You need an educated workforce which you personally will simply not have the time to train.

You'd need possibly hundreds of workers with Maester level metalworking degree to try and manufacture heavy machinery required for construction of a steam ship and that's before you actually retrain them.

Creation of a steam warship was an expensive process even for the British Empire. You need to basically be on par with the Lords Paramount on a monetary and infrastructural level before thinking of that sort of project.

Basically, until you make like 5000 - 25000 Gold a Month, steam powered warship will remain a dream since that's a project that can easily end up costing you hundreds of thousands of Gold Dragons just to put out a single ship, not taking development costs into account.

Also, no.
Any Lord that wants to shit on you can, though yur ship at this point has gotten to the point that your petty lords will probably think it's way more trouble than it's worth to try and fuck with it.

Like if you show up on the doorstep of someone with like 100-200 trained men and 1 or 2 ships, they probably would not pick a fight with you if they are not dumb.

If you want to get lands quick, you could try to start that mercenary company. You kill enough rogue knights and someone is going to either try to make you go away or tie you to their service.

Whenever there's conflict, acquiring a lordship is often not an impossibility. You could try to keep your ear on the ground and try to listen for rumors about such things.

Be it North, Reach, Dorne, Stormlands, Crownlands, Iron Islands, Vale or Riverlands, there is always a conflict brewing somewhere. King is not the only one who grants lordships afterall.

If you have a well trained and equipped fighting force, becoming a petty lord is very possible even during "peacetime,"

Btw, the Robert makes over 50 000 GD a month as his personal salary, though that money DOES pay for the maintenance fees of his properties and personal military.

Fun facts:
It is cheaper to develope a functional aeroplane than a steam warship.

Lords Paramount and the King can crash the value of Gold regionally on a semi-regular basis if they spend frivolously due to the high tax rates.

Killing people is one of the few lines of work that doesn't have an established monopoly in Raddyverse.

Honor is how you are perceived by other people. The better people perceive you, the more honorable you are, your personal integrity when measuring honour is irrelevant if people do not see it.

I'm going against the knee jerk reaction of not trying to make you guys overpowered and instead try to make the forces against progress more and more assholish in their nature to the point that I've actually had to thus far tone it down A LOT in order to make you, you know, not just die horribly.

I could have just forced you to straight out convert to the Faith of the Seven in order for you to get any jobs in Gulltown because you didn't really have any connections, you weren't famous, your family wasn't exactly well known, your ship was shit and the whole deal with the research didn't really work out for you either, so I had to quickly come up with a plausible plotline for the Vale while considering your limitations.

I really had to drop the subtlety in order to push for the narrative that "hey, status is a really, really important thing in this world if you actually don't want to work for the glory of others" to the point that I almost feel like I overdid it.

>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkJymMK33Zk

The primary advantage of a functional airship, even if a mere hot air balloon, would be the immense prestige involved with successfully creating something like that. That doesn't mean it's just for showboating though, there's also a very clear and distinct military advantage, which is that you can see really, really far from up there.

Commanding the battle from the skies with flags will give a tactical advantage to leaders. After all, a leader stuck in middle of the battle has no idea what's happening on the other side of the field.
It also helps monitoring the surrounding areas for raiders, bandits and enemy fleets, giving faster response time to any threats.

Valuable addition to any army with the wealth to pay for the contraption as well as the training for a man to become versed in it's usage.
>>
>>2091865
Yea, the ignition certainly will give you problems, but ultimately both will require a machine shop to make as well as some pretty heavy industry.

Big problem you'll have is that when you're the only one making petrol, there's not a whole lot of refueling stations.

All it would take is one spy to successfully steal the formula for gunpowder and, if everyone else has guns, we suddenly lose our advantage.

At the moment our guns are little more than a metal tube sealed at one end, and our ammunition is just lead balls; anyone could replicate this technology fairly easily if they get the chance to examine one of our muskets, then the formula for gunpowder is the only cards we hold (see above).

I'd much rather wait untill we're equipping our men with WW1-esque, bolt-action, rifles, *then* start selling old-timey muskets to everyone else. I'm very uncomfortable with the idea of other folks having weapons anywhere near the level of whatever we're currently using.

>>
>>2092500
The metallurgy behind guns and cannons is actually surprisingly complicated.

Gunpowder meanwhile is surprisingly simple. Though things do get a little tricky when you are after smokeless.

For advancing our weapons a huge deal will be percussion caps, rifling the barrels, and paper cartridges for faster reloading.

Actual improving upon the metallurgy is going to be a tricky bitch and a half, but we won't have a choice if we wanna develop guns with enough firepower to pierce plate mail.

There was a good reason after all why guns coexisted for so long with armor and melee weapons.
>>
>>2092500
Even if you literally handed out the recipe for Gunpowder to everyone for free, they would remain a novelty for years to come.

Majority of arms and armor in Westeros is in fact several decades old. The only true form of mass production that exists in the Known world is the Arsenal of Braavos, which is capable of creating a single war galley in a day.
This sort of thing is so rare it's considered one of the wonders of the world.

Theft of technology and reverse engineering are overall almost unheard of, but guilds killing over encroachment on their markets is commonplace.

Your guns are technically speaking state of the art level technology in Westeros. Attempting to replicate it without you would be a very costly process and most likely shortcuts would have to be taken which would probably cause a fair few of the weapons to blow up.

The only reason why you can do this so cheap is because you personally don't have to hire master smiths or alchemists to produce the powder and you can personally handle much of the woodworking as well though you aren't exactly a carpenter.

If you had to pay for a famed smith or an alchemist, the costs would be immense.
Technically speaking, each of your volley guns could be worth more than your longship if you found a buyer for them.

That is provided that powder is more affordable than the available substitutes in the market which are quite expensive.
>>
>>2093074
and no, this is not an endorsement for you to go around handing guns out to everyone you meet or to this guy in particular.

Also, you won't get WW1 era weaponry in a LOOONG time at this rate. You certainly will not make them when you are stuck on a fucking longship without a brand recognition to your name or any friends in high places.

This is from a GoT wiki

>Books and writing
Different societies have their own writing systems. The main one encountered is the one used for the Common Tongue of the Andals throughout Westeros. The Andals introduced the first full writing system to Westeros: the First Men before them only used a basic rune script for the Old Tongue which was only used for basic inscriptions on grave markers, etc. The Dothraki do not have a written language. In the novels, it is stated that the Valyrian languages in the Free Cities and Slaver's Bay have their own glyph-based writing systems, but no attempt has been made to represent this in the TV series.
The novels refer to characters in Westeros using both "parchment" (made from animal skins) and "paper" (made from wood pulp). This is not incongruous to the setting: paper was introduced to real life Western Europe as early as the twelfth century, though it did not surpass use of parchment for many centuries. Generally, parchment was still used for important documents - legal charters, important diplomatic messages, etc. - while paper was a cheap, less durable alternative. Given that Westeros is loosely based on the War of the Roses in England during the 1400s, it is not contradictory that their society uses a mix of paper or parchment for different tasks. Paper seems to be often used for more common tasks: the messages sent via the raven network are described as being written on little scrolls of "paper" - paper is thinner and lighter than parchment so it is probably easier to roll, easier to fit more writing on each roll, and easier for the birds to carry.

More important hand-delivered messages tend to be written on parchment, particularly royal decrees from King's Landing. Most if not all books are made out of parchment, not paper: books are usually commissioned or hand-copied and thus more like luxury items, so anyone commissioning one will have it made of high quality. They don't have cheap mass-produced paper books.

No mention has been made of printing press technology, and it apparently doesn't exist in Westeros (and probably not in Essos either). The printing press was only introduced in real-life Medieval Europe in the mid-1400s and took time to be implemented, again matching the general historical period of the setting. It is unknown if other societies use earlier forms of printing, such as wood-block printing, etc.

Can't fault a man for recognizing quality product when he sees one. No sir! Reluctant as you are of selling your prized weapons, there's no harm in testing the waters and hearing what he has to say.

"I made these things with my own two hands. That's about all I'm willing to share about them. Can't exactly divulge secrets of their creation that easily just because someone asked."

As you said that, his expression shifts for a moment and he peers deep into you, as if he's trying to find something in your face that simply isn't there.
"Master Smith as well as a Captain. That's quite an impressive skillset of someone your age."
He states as he keeps making you uncomfortable with his inquisitive gaze and smug smile.

So, assuming I'd be willing to part with one of my fantastic works... Just out of curiosity, what exactly would you be willing to offerm me for it?

He leans back from the staring and begins to ponder what the correct answer might be, as if he had something else in mind when he first expressed his desire to buy a gun.
His eyes lift to meet yours.
"I think I have some curiosities that might or might not interest a man such as you. Copies of certain rare books and other rarities from the East."

You cock your head. Rare books?
"And what exactly would these books be pertaining to?"

"Why what else? The higher mysteries of course."

An Occultist.

You wonder for a moment whether or not this is a good idea for a moment. You have no way of confirming whether or not he's a charlatan, but then again, magic is supposed to be a real force in this world, though at the moment it is practically nonexistent in the continent you stand on.

"Alright then, you've got my interest."
Stallonos smiles as he gives off an eerie feeling about him.
"I thought I might."
He stands up.
"Follow me and we shall continue to discuss this with fewer prying eyes."
You follow the creepy cult man as he leads you to a disheveled building in the town. As you enter, you get the distinct feeling of being watched. Warning bells are ringing in your head. You're following an occultist to his den in pursuit of strange literature. This seems less and less like a good idea with each passing moment. You get the feeling that things are about to turn lovecraftian at any moment.

The interior is dim and unlit as would be expected since neither gas nor electric lighting exist. Yet. But that fact doesn't make the dark interior of the building any less creepy.
"Wait here, I shall fetch some candles."
You see him disappear into the darkness and return with a lit candle. Hmm... it smells of Lavender

"One moment please."
He locks the outside door.
"Come. I keep the items are upstairs."

Upon entering the dark room, he lights more candles and you see shelves of curious items. It is hard to tell what exactly what they are, but besides books, you also peer glass bottles, talismans, stones of various shapes and sizes, most of them black but not all. There is also a human skull in the top shelf with strange carvings on it.

"Impressive collection is it not? They are all things I've picked up in my journeys on Essos, most of them I had to pay a lot of money for, which is one of the reasons why my ship and crew have so much sank in size recently that I have to take a job such as this."

You look at the floor and see strange symbols drawn on it in chalk.

He puts it on the study table and reaches out to grab some thin books, almost like pamphlets, but not quite so thin. Books with no more than 100 pages each.

By the way I just think I came up with THE fastest way for acquiring a lordship.

You show up at Castle Black and negotiate with the Lord Commander for a chunk of the Gift that is not worked this very moment to effectively become a vassal of the Night's Watch.

You would have to personally start up the settlement yourself, but it would get you the title of a Lord Mayor if you just bought a lordship.

Big problem is naturally that you will have to deal with the Wildling raiders and the eventual zombie Apocalypse, but hey, it's cheap land.

I deem flintlocks far too advanced for a trade of even this caliber. Magical artifacts will be easily accesible for our current line of work. We could try to spin a different, inferior product. But that wouldnt make for good business. So thats my piece.
>>
>>2098655
May I inquire as to your reasons for this?
>>
>>2098654
We have exclusive rights to our technology. I highly doubt that even this guy will be able to replicate such an item for a while even with magic hocus pocus. Im not comfertable potentially throwing away our advantage to a man like him. If we can replicate our arms, and he has the same access to our knowledge. There is sparce a binding contract that will stop him from whoreing out our very own invention for his benifit.
>>
>>2098662
Basically we will be placing ourselves in a unique position of weakness with this deal. Our technology is entirely unique. His books by his own words can be easily found and replicated.
>>
>>2098664
>I highly doubt that even this guy will be able to replicate such an item for a while even with magic hocus pocus.
All the more reason to give it to him.

>If we can replicate our arms, and he has the same access to our knowledge. There is sparce a binding contract that will stop him from whoreing out our very own invention for his benifit.
You mean besides OP stating that even if we told every single person in westros how to make gunpowder it wouldn't amount to shit for years? To quote from >>2093074:

>Even if you literally handed out the recipe for Gunpowder to everyone for free, they would remain a novelty for years to come.

>Majority of arms and armor in Westeros is in fact several decades old.

All of these facts amount to the statement that the replacement of weapons in westeros is incredibly slow and guns are an incredibly complex and costly thing to produce and thus would take at least a decade to pass from occasional novelty and specialist weapon into actually being a common sight and even then only in the hands of the rich.

So we can state fairly certainly that this guy, who seemingly only intends to collect knowledge and is far from being the richest or most well connected or most powerful man, would struggle to safely and cheaply replicate enough of our muskets or other gunpowder weapons to actually become any sorts of threat or to effect their presence in common knowledge.
>>
>>2098683
>I highly doubt that even this guy will be able to replicate such an item for a while even with magic hocus pocus.
I meant this in the present sense, wherein givin the knowledge that he has at the moment.

But fine. I suppose you have made your point.

If you ever make it to Asshai or join one of the sinister cults in Braavos, sure.

>We have exclusive rights to our technology.
To be perfectly clear, you haven't patented guns nor gunpowder. In order to do that, you'd need to lobby the crown for a patent office to be founded.

>We will be placing ourselves in an unique position of weakness
He'll probably figure out that flintlocks don't work too well during rain I guess. Is that such a huge weakness for you? You decide.
>>
>>2098705
>We have exclusive rights to our technology.
Not de jure, de facto.
>He'll probably figure out that flintlocks don't work too well during rain I guess. Is that such a huge weakness for you? You decide.
I was under the impression that a man such as he would be crafty enough to exploit the invention as soon as he got his hands on it, get exclusive rights of production and start a new gun monopoly as soon as able. Which would certainly screw us.
>>
>>2098702
Well, it's not as if it's IMPOSSIBLE to recreate firearms if you've the aid of magic.
Get some Qohorian Bloodsmith and decent enough Alchemist and you could create a relatively safe lead belcher.
Still, that's a whole lot of effort in terms of logistics alone and you'd also need the appropriate amount of gold and blood to make that thing a reality.

In a more practical sense, these weapons represent a get out of a fight free card.
anyhow, pistols for occult material coming up it seems.
>>
>>2098705
Just a question, how much would it be reasonable to expect it to cost him to manufacture a musket of quality equal to those we make use of?
>>
Well let's see... just a barrel of similiar quality would be likely to cost him at least 9 gold to reproduce.
The firing mechanism arguably requires a lesser degree of expertise, but I'd have to reckon it'd still be at least half of the cost to make.

Single gun made by him would cost more than a suit of full plate though and reproducing propellant on his own would be like about 5 silver stags a shot while to you it's like... almost 10 shots per silver depending on the market prices.

Still, it's remarkably cheap price for some people to just straight cheat through a fight you'd normally lose.
>>
>>2098789
True but I'm just getting these numbers to prove a point: even if he knew how to produce them to exactly the same level as us, he'd be fucked to get the funds for it.

>I want it all
>I want it all
>I want it now

You look at the items on the table and you pick up the bottle of shade of the evening, uncork it and smell it's interior and rotate it around. It's smell is terrible, like that of rotten meat and it's movements are viscous. It's colour is that of a deep, dark blue. For all you know from the books, this is probably the real thing.

You cannot verify the other objects in the table so readily. Once the years come, maybe you can unlock some secrets of magic and exploit them for your own purposes. It is a force now dead, but what is dead may never die, but rises again harder and stronger. Even if it's just some minor thing that you will learn, some minor bend in the laws of reality, it could help you to take technological shortcuts.

"You said you wanted to buy one Stallonos. However, allow me to make a counter proposal."
You place the bottle down at the table.
"I'll give you both of my personal self-defense weapons for these."
You pull out one of your pistols and place it on the table.
"They are compact, elegant, concealable and can pierce all but the toughest armors with but a pull of a trigger. I will naturally also show you how to use them and give you enough substance for about 30 shots for each pistol."

Stallonos feels your pistol, admires it's fine lines and points it at the shadows and smiles under the candlelight.
"Do we have a deal?"
"Oh, we most certainly do good Captain. We most certainly do. It's perfect."
"Good, let's bag up the goods and head to my ship. I'll give you a crash course on the operation and maintenance on the products."

You carry your newly acquired property in a burlap sack as the two of you waddled towards the docks. It was getting dark out pretty soon so you had to hurry up to get your business concluded. You sure as shit didn't want to end up bunking at Stallono's creepy place.

>Awareness: 11 close, but no cigar.
>As you leave, you get the distinct feeling of being watched, but could not pinpoint where.

The two of you stood near the entrance to the warehouse you've been bunking at. You deposited your property into the strongboxes and begun the training.

"Right, you grab this one and do as I show you. First, since I always carry them loaded, we discharge them. First, bring the hammer to full-cock, like this."
He pulls the hammer back just as you do.
"The weapon is now ready to fire, point it towards the pumpkin over there. Line up your sight between the notches. Do NOT flinch after the powder ignites or you'll miss. Once you're ready, pull the trigger."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CKhdyGVnkk

>15 Great Shot Stan!

"Good shot. Again."
You put your cocked pistol into his other hand. He takes aim and fires.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CKhdyGVnkk

>14 Still decent!

"It seems like you're a natural at this. Next, we go through the process of preparing the weapon to fire again and for that, we use this."
You pull out your powder horn and grab one of the pistols.
"The tip of the container has been made so that it gives the correct amount of powder for the pistols when you turn it over like so and press here."

You place the powder back and grab a patch of watting and some powder.
"Now, we actually place in the projectile. I prefer to use lead since it's nice and heavy but well, if it fits, it shoots, though results vary. You use the watting to seal it up nice and well and then ram the bullet down with the little rod I've included in each of them."

You hand over the powder horn
"You try."
He does as you instructed.
"Is it ready to fire?"
"Almost, we just need to complete the final step, which is priming the charge."
You take the powder horn back, pull the weapon to half-cock and pour some powder in the pan and close the frizzen.
"The weapon is now in half-cock. This means that the trigger cannot be pulled, so that you need not worry about accidental discharge. As you put the powder in, it is loaded, but until you pull the hammer to full cock, you cannot fire the weapon keep this in mind."
His weapon is now primed and loaded. You hand him over the other pistol and fill out his powder horn.
"Congratulations. You have now completed the basic firearms training."
"Wait, that was it?"
"Oh, right, you'll probably want the holsters as well. Not like I have use for these until I make some new ones. Yes, the weapons are simple to use, but actually hitting with them consistently will take practice."

He looks at the weapons
"Is there anything else about these items I should know about."
"Not really? You try to copy it, it'll probably blow up in your hand and kill you and there's always the obvious thing that wet things don't burn."
"Can the powder be dried afterwards?"
"Yes of course. I'm not a hack. I produce quality goods."
"What will happen if I use more powder than the premeasured amount?"
"You'll hurt your hand, how badly depends on the powder quantity. Any more questions?"
"What If I put in more than one ball?"
"It probably won't blow up in your hand, but I wouldn't guarantee it."
"If there's a ball in the barrel and no powder, can you get it out?"
"You can try and stick some powder from the hole in the side with a pin into the barrel and try to force it to move. Any further questions?"

Stallonos puts on the holster and stores his weapons.
"I am quite satisfied. More than that, it's definitely a masterwork design. Most crossbows do not have such safety features. They truly are pieces of art."
"Well, I made them for personal use. It'd be pretty daft to not put effort into them. Just, you know, take good care of them. They're part of the original firearms. Couple of generations down the line after both of us are dead and gone, those things will be worth a LOT of money for the right buyer."
The two of you shake hands.
"You have my word on it."

The shady book dealer leaves into the darkening night and you make your way to the bunk you've set up on the warehouse and rest with your men for the night.

We need a base of operations, a safe place to rest and keep supplies for when our ship is out of space, i dont trust some random warehouse. We should keep on trading and recruting more soldiers.
Once we become strong enough we can request or demand land and titles, or we pay the iron price and become a Pirate King in the stepstones, this would work well as a base. If we are are gonna play the money making game we make a deal with the Iron bank and sell them some firearms, they are very wealthy and they would pay great ammounts of money for Thunder sticks.

Anyways just some of my suggestions.
>>
>>2099417
If you intend to become a Blackpowder king, just remember to take the location into consideration.
Stepstones may not necessarily be the best place for Sulfur as I am not entirely certain if there even are islands there which are volcanic.

All I know truly is that it suffers from storms relatively frequently and that the stepstones used to be have a land bridge connecting it to Essos.

One of the major benefits of the stepstones is that not only does it avoid stepping on the toes of any actual kingdoms and such until we are strong but that if we can fortify and police it sufficiently, we have a stranglehold on trade through the region. Granting us access to all the goods and money that flows through.

>>2099466
Eh, that is probably fine. I mean even if we only had minor deposits of sulphur to work with in our own lands, we could purchase more from elsewhere to support our efforts.

After all, it's not like we're going to be firing thousands of shots every day against the pirate "kingdoms". Chances are they'll surrender, run or die before we'd run out of ammo if we had even 400 shots worth of gunpowder per week being produced. At least at first and after that I'd expect the smart ones to look into allying with us.
>>
>>2099639
After a quick search on the wiki, I have to concur and say that we are very much on the same page. Considering the proximity of the islands to major resource production and trade, we will be able to aquire all of the logistical and economic backbone necessary to throughly develope any and all of the islands to our vision given time. This is even considering the frequent storm generation, which on a positive note can be easily harnessed into natural energy via windmills and lightning harvesters later down the line.

The primary concern however that comes to mind, is the issue of the native population and furthermore the native leadership. It has been long withstanding that the stepstones have been home to literal an-cap tier populations and veritable scum, often of a multi lingual foreign disposition and with many leaders who stink of treachery and deciet.

Depending on overall population size, I would recommend some proper solutions to these problems, which would be either forcible relocation of populations or thorough iron-fisted subjugation. This relocation could either be selling communities into essosi slavery, forced domestic labor, or even genocide. All of which will be easy to accomplish and sustain through our fancy tech.

Assimilating the stepstone pirates would not be worth the effort, even the long term benefits wouldnt stack to the costs to be frank. Resetling the islands with carefully recruited volunteers of a more noble and servile disposition would benifit us more on both resource managment and intrigue theaters.

Granted overall the differences could very well be marginal. And even if our current crew is composed of largley lowlives, if every man in our little nation were composed of such men -as well as our subordinates- I just cant see an end to trouble.

Fun and dangerous yes, but not stable or loyal.
>>
>>2100318
I want to add on to the little spiel at the end. Right now we are personally managing and looking over 45 people, the smallest of islands could be harboring a population of twice that number. If we were to secure bloodstone, the largest island, I would expect to see a permenant population in the hundreds of thousands, subjugated pirates included
>>
But hey mabye im just talking out of my ass. Op is god so he knows best. If the pop of bloodstone is a third of my estimate then I can safely consider my hypothesis bullshit at birth.
>>
I like the idea of us having couple of islands
>>
>>2099639
It actually does step on toes of a lot of people, but it's contested.
Lys, Tyrosh and Myr all have colonies there and Iron Throne also has claim on the lands.

Still, if you aren't a major power in Stepstones, ripples won't be caused.

>Restock on Powder materials
>Finish that prototype still

You decide to go and visit the markets to go looking for some Sulphur and Saltpeter. Looks like some local family apothecary kept a crate in stock of the stuff in the back room.

It wasn't a particularly fast moving item, it had been sitting in there for a good year or so and the family that ran the apothecary was happy enough to see you buy it off their storage so they gave you a good deal on it. Apparently they acquired as an extra when bartering with a spice merchant on the docks for some medical herbs long time ago.

After finishing that affair, you decided to spend the rest of the free time on working on the still as the dockworkers were figuring out the cargo storage. It was a rather simple construct of some copper containers and piping. Built so you could take it apart and assemble it at will. Naturally, it's so small that it won't produce any great quantities of Aqua Vitae and it requires someone who has experience in firetending to make it churn out booze.

>18 Great job!

Good thing that your dicking around with the forge has given you some affinity on working with open fire. The testing of the still went marvelously. It burns when an ember is thrown into the mix. The concept definitely works, but could be refined further. For now however, you've got a small bottle of the strongest booze in town for... medical uses. Yes, strictly medical.

Time for departure was nigh.
You and the other Captains had assembled once again at the Captain's Lounge to go through the route one last time while enjoing the last decent meal before the journey.

Captain Sark takes the lead
"Right, let's go over our route and formation again before the journey since we've a newbie in the area."
"Since we've got 6 ships, we usually move in pairs. Side by side. That means our lads won't get flanked from both sides by the mountain cunts. Ranged ships paired with boarders generally speaking. One supports the other."
Locke puts his mug on the table.
"Question is who gets paired up with Melvin this time."
Mood gets a bit darker.
"What's wrong with pairing up with Melvin?" You ask
"I hear the good captain is cursed." Stallonos answers
"Whomever pairs up with him tends to end up with a most unfortunate end whilst his crew tends to somehow make out of it alive."
"It ain't no fucking curse. The fucker is just craven and the chances are you'll have to deal with two ships when he and his crew avoid the enemy like a slippery eel. The Mountain Clans don't even bother attacking him at this point." Sark replies
Locke chuckles at this
"I thought you said your crew had never been defeated in a boarding battle."
"And I'd like to keep it that way you shit."
You raise your hand
"Just out of curiosity, with the increased risk, there ought to be a bonus involved, yes?"
"There is. There's 25 gold extra if there's no fighting and you'll get 100 gold bonus if there is considering that Melvin sure as shit will never earn any combat merits, so you'll definitely be entitled to his and nobody will deny the worth of your ship. That is if you survive."

You ponder on this for a moment. That means you'll get guaranteed 40 gold just by making it to the first checkpoint. If there's fighting along the way, you could make far more than the 15 gold that was promised.

On the other hand, it could mean that some of your crew might end up dying in a worst case scenario.

Dangerous opportunity lies in front of you. What do you choose?

Your eye twitches at that comment as you feel a tingle at your solar plexus.
"The rest of the pairings should be fairly self evident then, right?" Locke states
He takes a sip from his steaming mug.
"I'll take Lazoros and Sark takes Stallonos. All we need to do is be clear on the route we'll go."
"No objections? Then it's unanimous."

Captain Sark pulls out a map.
"First, we'll be going to Heart's home. The trip there should be... relatively safe. Only about a quarter of the ships get attacked on the way."
"After unloading our cargo, we'll be given some shipments to take downriver."
"The first checkpoint here, it's a toss of a coin whether or not we get attacked on the way."
"We'll unload our goods and load theirs on board and ship them to Heart's home."
"At that point, we'll discuss whether or not we want to risk the final checkpoint or do we pick up some supplies from Snakewoods or Strong Song to haul back to Gulltown."
"Basically, we start taking casualties or finish the route, and then we'll head back home."

You start making some mental calculations.
15 gold for each shipment completed. If you managed to actually make through this entire endeavor by taking the longest possible route, you'd be making 8 stops until the journey is complete. That means 120 from shipping alone with either 25 gold bonus if there's no fighting and 100 gold bonus if there is. Maybe more if there's loot.

No wonder these men were attracted to this route. Even without the special tax exemptions that you receive as a highborn, the money from this arrangement can help a man get rid of debts or simply to jump higher in the world, provided you survive the journey.

"Once we're done, let's head to our ships and set sail. No point in dallying further."

After finishing the breakfast with the Captains, each of you head out to your ships own ships and set out to the sea, leaving the scenic town and it's mighty lighthouse behind you.

>62 Normal weather, you got some good wind as well!
>88 Precitipation! Weather changes too: It's 33, which means Rain!
>70 Normal weather, the wind conditions are optimal!

It approximately two weeks of sailing to reach the fingers. On the way you and your fleet stopped and resupplied at Snakewood before continuing up river to Heart's home.

>30 No Attacks

The route to Heart's home was uneventful. Perhaps the mountain clans were further west, perhaps they were busy fucking goats. Either way, you profit when they stay at home. You peered the castle of House Corbray standing atop a dominating hill on the riverside with their colors waving in the air. Three black ravens in flight, holding three red hearts on a white field. This is it.

Under the hill there was a walled village, larger than the village back in Anchorall and with more stone housing than wood hovels, but it had a quiet charm about it. The tallest building in the village was a humble which had been painted white.
The village was not prosperous, there was a relately small pier which struggled in accomodating your fleet as it was primarily built for fishing boats rather than longships.

Whilst you made your approach, there were some clearly important looking individuals wearing the colors of House Corbray, seemingly ordering the villagers to move their boats to the shores to make room with empty carts awaiting. You decided to put on your noble clothes while you were still in the distance.

Upon reaching the humble little pier, you jumped off the ship as your men secured the vessel. Rest of the captains seemed to have the same idea as they jumped and stretched out a bit before all of you moved to the end of the pier to meet the men at arms.

"Greetings travelers. I trust you are the ones carrying the goods ordered by honoured Lord Corbray from Gulltown?"
"Aye, that we are."
"Lord Lyn Corbray hopes that the good Captains would join him at his castle for a dinner whilst the menials transport your cargo. However, before that, I should collect the names of those in attendance."
Sark's face once again shifts from neutral to intense as he eyes up the man and then it changes back to normal again as he cocks his head back.
"The red cunt is Lazoros, the youngster is from House Manden, the Braavosi is Stallonos."
"Me, Melvin and Locke you already know."

The man has someone else write it down.
"Very good. I am sergeant Carn, here to escort you to the castle and see that your goods find their way to my lord's hands without delay. If you would be so patient as to wait until we get the first carts loaded up and we'll make our way to the castle."

The Vale was quite scenic. Mountains flanking rivers, castles and fertile fields tended to by the smallfolk. It was very idyllic medieval image. There was a strong sense of tradition amongst the people, like everything had remained unchanged for hundreds of years in this valley.

The castle itself was an imposing thing. Large, oversized even, just like most every castle in Westeros you've seen thus far. It was a very old looking thing, reminding of some of the old Andal castles built on the Iron Islands. It was not an advanced design. It had four towers and crennellated walls as well as some arrow loops on the walls and single gatehouse, but it wasn't really partitioned too well outside of that.

At the table sat the Lord's family, as well as many of his trusted men at arms. There was some bard playing in the corner whilst the smell of wine, freshly cooked beef, vegetables and scented candles filled the air.

As you and your entourage took the first steps into the dining hall, you were announced by the herald.
"Entering Captain Eddard Manden of the Long Night, Captain Melving of the-"
At those words his head turned and your eyes me his.
You both froze, like deer at headlights.
There was someone sitting at the table that you already had met before.

Your previous client. The Rogue Knight whose loyalty to a dead cause had led him to a doomed quest through the realm, seeking for support to overthrow Robert's Reign was sitting at the table eating mash of vegetables and stir fried strips of meat with a rich, dark sauce and a serving of wine.

His lips parted
"What in the seven hells are you doing here?"
"Ser Randar, do you know this young man?"

To be continued?
Probably

>Congratulations! You've reunited with Ser Randar
>Congratulations! You're in the Danger Zone
>Congratulations! You completed the first part of our assignment

Will put up more once I actually finish up writing. I have limited amount of time each day and didn't get around updating it today. Weekends are at the very least guaranteed.

I sort of need to catch up on the machining course.

Hmm... It's more for status rolls than persuasion, wearing clothes fitting of your status will make it easier to meet people.
It won't really make them like you more, unless you roll high enough in status that they think you important

Also, unremarkable rolls.
Your manners leave a neutral impression.
