You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

After running a few more deterrence patrols along the border, the Pacifica and the rest of the fleet finally returned to Nabaal, leaving behind a small picket to keep an eye out for any further Zentradi incursions.

However, even though you were back in home territory, that didn't mean you had nothing to do. You and Lara were marching over to the briefing room, having been summoned by the Admiral, no doubt for another assignment.

And all the while, Lara keeps glancing at you with an inquisitive and slightly predatory look.

"Something the matter, Lara?" You finally speak up, eying her cautiously as you walk.

"Mmmmmm, nothing." She chuckles. "Just wondering if those rumors going around were true."

"What rumors...?" You raise your eyebrow.

"Well..." Lara's grin widens mischievously. "Scuttlebutt around the ship is that YOU were having 'teatime' with the good old Admiral!"

"...is that what they're saying?" You mumble. You wonder how people could have possibly found out. Then again, it's not like you or Dorothea were making any serious effort to be discreet.

"So? So? Is it true? What happened?" Lara shifts closer to you, almost uncomfortably close, her face eager to glean more information.

"We literally just had tea. That's all." You roll your eyes. "You do realize that the Admiral's British, right? Tea is a normal thing."

"Yeah, well, it's not often that she invites someone to drink with her!" Lara winks. "But I get ya, it's probably all just part of the job, right?"

"Right." You confirm. "I'm not sure why you're so interested in all this, though."

"Aaaah, well, I guess I just wanted to contribute some of my own gossip." Lara shrugs, her voice betraying a hint of disappointment.

You plant your hand on the wall, using your arm to cut off Lara's path and forcing her to stop and look you right in the eyes.

"What, are you jealous or something?" You ask, putting on the best faux charm you could.

Lara pauses and is silent for a second before bursting out in laughter.

"Hahahaha, that's so corny, Cap!" She hollers as she wipes a tear from her eye. "Don't tell me other girls actually fell for that!"

"Well..."

"Nah, don't worry, I don't need to know the answer to THAT." Lara chuckles as she casually ducks under your arm and continues down the hall. You're forced to jog a bit to catch up to her.

"Guess it's also a little silly of me to pester you about the Admiral." Lara sighs.

"You know, I've always meant to ask." You decide to change the subject. "I've noticed you've always been a bit... on edge ever since that Julie girl showed up."

"Huh? What about it?" Lara raises an eyebrow.

"You have a past with her or something?" You wonder.

"I don't want to talk about it." Lara grunts as she picks up her pace.

Now that was... a bit odd.

You decide to stay quiet, not wanting to risk putting Lara into a foul mood or anything. Fortunately, you're practically already at the briefing room at this point, so you wouldn't have to deal with any sort of awkward silence.

In the briefing room, you see the normal faces. The Admiral, Karla, and Amy. Kellerman wasn't present, which meant that this was something solely meant for your own little unit.

"Neumann, Williams." Admiral acknowledges your arrival. "Please have a seat so we can begin."

Both of you comply and take a seat. Karla is the first to speak up.

"Well, let's get this started, shall we?" Karla grins. "Considering how well Amy's test run performed in the previous battle, we've seen fit that she's ready for her first public performance!"

Amy remains silent, but still has a bit of a grumpy expression.

"So... a concert?" You raise your eyebrow.

"The people in this sector need to know that NUNS is protecting them, and that they have a galactic idol on their side!" Karla continues with that confident grin.

"So propaganda, basically." You grunt.

"Entertainment!" Karla corrects you.

"Some would say those two are one and the same." Dorothea comments coolly.

"Either way, we can't let this chance to improve the morale of both the military and the civilian populace slip through our fingers!" Karla snaps her fingers and a number of holographic posters and ads showing Amy in her full idol getup appear behind her.

"Is she ready for this?" You ask as you turn your gaze to Amy.

"O-of course I am!" Amy claims, trying to keep a brave face up.

"Don't worry, she performed marvelously in the battle, and this is still her first performance! The crowd will be in a forgiving mood!" Karla chuckles.

"Well, if you put it that way." You shrug. "So what do me and Lara have to do with all this?"

"Well..." Dorothea leans forward but then pauses. "Perhaps it's better if Karla explains."

"Can do!" Karla winks. "You remember that mysterious person you reported during that little party a while back?"

"Yes." You nod, recalling that waiter that seemed to be stalking Amy. "You found a lead?"

"Well, nothing that strong, but we do have motive." Karla nods and snaps her fingers again. The concert ads melt away to show various pictures and posters of some sort of group.

"They call themselves the "Colonial Freedom Movement', or the CFM for short." Karla sighs. "A bunch of reactionary crackpots calling for unrestricted expansion into Zentradi space."

"But that's suicide." You frown. "It would never succeed."

"Under normal circumstances, yes." Karla nods. "But if they were to have an idol with high fold resonance in their possession..."

And the realization hits you. Amy wasn't a target to these people, but a prize.

"We don't believe they have the resources or the numbers to try anything." Dorothea explains. "But nonetheless, as a precaution, you will be flying air cover over the concert grounds under the pretense that you are providing an airshow."

Amy remains quiet, though still clearly troubled.

"I won't." You assure her.

"I'll also be present to oversee things, so you won't be totally alone." Karla winks. "I know a thing or two about ground ops as well!"

You walk up to Karla before she has a chance to leave, intent on getting more answers from her.

"Cap...?" Lara asks.

"Go make sure Amy's okay." You tell her. "I just have a few more questions."

"Um, sure thing, Cap." Lara nods uncertainly as she heads off after Amy, who makes quick escape from the room.

Dorothea pauses for a moment when she sees you with Karla, but merely adjusts her cap and heads out as well. She was a busy woman, after all.

"Hm? So what do you want to ask me?" Karla asks as she sits on the edge of the table and crosses her legs rather seductively.

"I just get the impression you know more about these CFM guys than you're letting on." You eye her suspiciously.

"Hmmmm, maybe you're right. But that's all you really need to know right now, isn't it?" Karla's sly smile remains unchanged. "I'd be risking my position if I keep giving away information like this freely."

You knew spooks like Karla. The world of espionage was always tit for tat. A trading of favors to one another. Nothing was given away freely, after all, especially when it came to information.

"All right, what would it take then?" You ask. "Not that I've agreed to anything yet."

"Hm, well, there are some matters that are of... personal concern to me." Karla's smile widens just a bit. "Having a skilled pilot like you would be extremely useful."

"Off the books?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Off the books, of course." She confirms, her voice slithering through your ears. "Bear in mind, this is intel I haven't even told our good Admiral here, so it's quite valuable."

Of course, she wants your assistance in some sort of black op in the near or distant future. Not unusual, but still, it made you a bit uncomfortable.

"Come on, I'm sure a smart, ruthlessly cunning woman like you doesn't have to worry about such things." You say, trying to persuade her tell you something.

"You must be must extremely foolish or genuinely attracted to think you could just charm the words out of me." Karla laughs heartily. "That's one of the first things we're taught to look out for and resist, after all."

"Well, it was worth a try." You concede.

"Don't worry, I can handle things as needed." Karla grins as she gets back on her feet and casually walks by you. "If there's anything you need to know, I'll be sure to tell you."

And with one last wave, Karla makes her leave.

Well, you couldn't say you weren't at least a little suspicious at Amy's silence, especially since she was pretty damn noisy almost all the time. You quickly punch in the override code to the door and make your way inside...

The first thing you notice is that Amy's quarters are pretty damn nice. In fact, they're REALLY nice. Even better than yours! It was practically like a hotel suite with all the luxuries and creature comforts you would expect from. Guess it was one of the perks of being an idol.

The living room was not occupied, but far from empty. You could see a large couch and an even larger TV screen. Beyond, you could see a door leading to what was presumably Amy's bedroom. You cautiously approach it and give it a knock.

"Amy? You in there?" You ask

"Go away." Amy mumbles from the other end.

"Amy, I'm just here to see if you're okay." You tell her. "Are you at least decent?"

There's an awkward silence before she finally responds again.

"...okay, you can come in."

You open the door to see a large, rather soft looking queen size bed, a large, blanket draped over a roughly young girl sized bulge.

"Pressure getting to you?" You chuckle as you sit at the edge of the bed.

"Gee, you think?" Amy responds, her voice muffled through her blankets.

Hmmm, it wouldn't do anybody any good if Amy remained cooped up in that little blanket fort of hers. You were going to have to find some way to coax her out.

"So I take it that Karla's talk about the CFM got you all worked up?" You ask, patting what you think (and hope) is Amy's head under the blanket.

"...maybe." Amy mutters.

"Well, how about I teach you a move or two just in case someone tries to grab you?" You offer. "You could stand a learn a few more self defense moves."

"I... I guess that could work." Amy pokes her head out from under the blankets. "So like, are you gonna be teaching me the sort of moves that let me kill three guys with a pencil or something?"

Jeez, where does she get these ideas...?

"Of course." You nod. "Gotta be prepared for everything, after all.

"Sweet!" Amy's face lights up as she throws off her covers, thankfully still dressed under them. "C'mon! Let's go, then!"

Amy practically drags you out of the room and toward the gym.

"Going on a date already?" Lara teases as she sees Amy dragging you out.

"Nah, just a bit of training." You tell her. "We'll be back soon."

"Guess I'll go check up on the Valkyries." Lara shrugs and walks off.

You and Amy finally reach the gym, where you activate one of the training drones for the both of you to practice on.

"All right, Amy, I'll teach you a basic, but effective move you can do." You say

"All right, give it to me, Cap!" Amy nods, eager to learn.

"Basically, if someone tries to get at you, a quick strike to the throat is usually the most effective means to take them out." You say, pointing to the training drone's neck. You demonstrate by walking up and inflicting a lightning strike on the neck, forcing the drone to stumble backwards before it regains its balance.

"The throat...?" Amy frowns.

"It's one of the most vulnerable places on the human body." You nod. "Most armor doesn't really efficiently protect it, and it's very sensitive so a hit will cause a person to instantly flinch. Hell, hit them hard enough and you can crush their windpipe and cause them to suffocate outright."

"Huh, really." Amy muses.

"And if you're going up against somebody significantly larger..."

You again demonstrate by striking the drone in the belly, where the solar plexus would be. The drone bends over, simulating a person getting hit in the gut, and then you followup with an uppercut into the throat.

"Quick, efficient, and lethal." You grin.

"I guess I can get that down." Amy nods in agreement.

"Then how about you try a few drills?" You say as you take a few steps back."

"Sure thing!" Amy grins as her hands ball into fists and she readies herself.

And so you watch Amy perform her drills, relentlessly and mercilessly striking her robotic opponent with swift throat strikes, just the way you showed her.

This goes on for about another hour before Amy finally stops, seemingly satisfied, though also no doubt tired.

"Thanks a lot, Cap." Amy grins as she wipes beats of sweat off her brow. "I really needed to just let off some steam there."

"Hey, I'm always here to help." You reminder.

"I'll keep that you taught in mind." Amy leaps out of the fight ring and starts picking up her things. "Anyways, I guess I should start actually practicing for that concert now. Gotta make sure I got all the notes down, ya know?"

"You go do your thing, kid." You grin.

"U-um, do you want to stick around and listen..?" Amy asks softly, as if she wasn't sure if she wanted you to hear her or not.

"Sure thing." You nod.

The two of you head back to Amy's room. She motions for you to sit down on the couch while she turns on a video on her TV and picks a up a microphone.

"So, uh, Karla said that I had to sing this, and it's a bit cheesy and not really my type of thing but... it's super fuckin' popular."

And then the music starts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1nP2vYO24k

Ah, one of the classics. Definitely a safe song pick, though you guess you couldn't blame Karla for this choice. After all, this was Amy's public debut.

And Amy's rendition of it wasn't half bad, even if she couldn't get her voice up quite as high as Minmay's. You just lean back and soak in the words.

Amy for her part seems to become more relaxed upon seeing your reaction, and her singing quickly starts to harmonize closer with the recording as her confidence picks up.

Jeez, if she were to sing like this at the concert, you were certain she'd knock it out of the park.

All that meant was that you had to make sure things went smoothly.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week, and don't forget Frontier Knight on Saturday!
