You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, your party was being confronted by a massive water elemental summoned by a mage of ill intent. The elemental, fueled by the endless amount of water stored in the cistern underneath it, looked to be a difficult enemy to defeat.

However, like all elemental constructs, this water elemental had a core within it keeping its body together. All you would need to do is pinpoint and destroy it. Though the problem was the core was relatively small, and constantly moving due to all of the micro currents and eddies within the elemental. Even now, you could catch the glint and shine of the core swirling and spinning through the living water.

Morgan, Lucina, and Nino were preparing to engage the beast as it advanced upon them, with Naru hastily casting blessings of Sol on them and herself for protection. The elemental was currently ignoring you, but you had no weapon at the moment, having thrown it to keep the mage from fleeing. Your halberd was still there, sticking out of the squirming and twitching mage.

Here's a few ideas to deal with our new problem:
>if it's made from fresh water, freeze and smash it to bits
>electrocute it
>toss something oily/greasy at it, and burn it via Nino (or try to find out if our dragon form allows us to breathe dragonfire)

Nino shouts something as she casts her spell, and a wind of frost blasts forth from her hands, freezing the base of the water elemental upon contact. The ice begins to crawl up its body, but slows down quickly, unable to push through the sheer density of water in the elemental's body.

That's when Lucina dashes in, her sword now coated with frost and mist as she slashes at the elemental, her enchanted blade likewise freezing water to the touch.

You start rapidly ascending the path of ice as you catch sight of the core. You plunge your arm into the water, which is much harder than you had initially thought. Your arm reaches for the core, but a fast current blows it out of your reach...

And that's when Morgan's arrow zips in. It was a masterful shot by all accounts, as she would have had to account for the water bending the light around the core, obscuring its true location, as well as the currents and the mere impact of the arrow on the water deflecting its course. Despite all those obstacles, her arrow strikes the core, nicking a chunk off of it and cracking the crystal.

The elemental roars and explodes, scattering water in all directions. You manage to catch sight of the core tumbling in the air before dropping back down into the cistern.

"Okay, we chased it off for now!" Nino says as she waves her hand, freezing the surface of the water. "But it's gonna come back for us!"

"Well, we took down the guy who put it here." Morgan says as she plants a foot on the fallen mage's back and pulls your halberd out. "Can't we just take them in custody and leave the rest to the Mages?"

"I don't like the idea of just leaving a water elemental down here..." Lucina frowns as she looks down on the ice. "If we leave it alone, it can come out anywhere in the city and hurt more citizens..."

You walk forward to the mage, who was having their wounds treated by Naru and you pull their hood back.

It was a man. A young man, actually. And human, too. Not an elf. Still, you couldn't completely discount the possibility he was an Elven agent.

"Awwww, kinda anticlimactic." Nino sighs.

You grab the mage by the collar and nod to the girls. You'll take care of this.

"All right." Lucina nods grimly as she turns around, her sword still exuding frost. "Morgan, Nino, get ready."

And right on cue, the ice begins to crack and crumble as something powerful below tries to bash its way through. Water begins gushing from the cracks and collecting together.

"Naru, stay back." Lucina adds.

"Don't have to tell me twice." Naru grunts and turns to you. "I patched him up enough that he should be safe to move. Don't be afraid to go all out."

You give a nod and sling the mage's body over your shoulder. You need to get him to authorities as soon as possible.

You charge through the now cleared tunnels and chambers back the way you came. Halfway through, you nearly run straight into Niko and a half dozen Manaknights.

"Whoa! Hey there, big guy!" Niko yelps as she leaps out of the way.

"Got into trouble again, huh?" Caroline grunts. "Typical with a Templar!"

"But from how Niko describes it, this issue does fall within our purview." Justin observes.

You nod and show them the the mage you were carrying.

"H-hey! What the hell! I think I recognize this guy!" Caroline sputters.

"It does appear that he is affiliated with the Mages." Justin leans in for a closer look.

"Hey, speaking of that, where's the others?" Niko asks.

A sudden loud rumble that reverberates through the tunnel seems to answer that.

"Better not be wrecking the place!" Caroline scowls and turns to the other Manaknights. "You guys take this criminal scum back to the Tower! Me and Justine will handle things down here!"

By the time you get back to the main cistern, you could immediately see that the battle was not going well. Morgan and Nino looked as if they had been knocked out or otherwise disabled, their limp and soaked bodies laid down at Naru's feet, who was desperately holding up a golden protective barrier to stave off the merciless lashings of dozens of water tentacles snaking off the reformed water elemental's body.

Lucina was still on her feet, her ice blade managing to freeze and shatter all of the elemental's attacks. But with the sheer number of tentacles and limbs, it was impossible for Lucina to break though its defenses on her own.

"Get them out of here!" Lucina yells, pointing to your beleaguered party.

"Don't worry, we'll hand this situation." Justin says calmly as she strides forward, the surface of the cistern water freezing beneath her feet.

"Yeah, we'll take this sucker down in no time!" Caroline boasts as pulls out her baton.

"Well what's the call, boss?" Niko asks, sword in one hand and kunai in the other.

Get them far enough away so that Naru can heal them, then run back to help the others. Maybe, since we have two mages on hand here, we can get them to launch us at the core. If we get propelled fast enough, we might be able to bodily smash the core.

You nod to Niko. The party always came first.

"All right!" Niko nods. "I'll cover ya, then! Go!"

You start running down the stone walkway towards the rest of the party. Meanwhile, Justine and Caroline join up with Lucina, using ice magic to continue chipping away at the water elemental.

But that didn't mean it wasn't unaware of your presence. Already, some of the water tentacles began shifting their focus on you, lashing out like whips.

And that's where Niko came in, dashing and and slicing up the tentacles as they came in. The limbs dissolve back into normal water as they're separated from the main body. She throws several of her kunai as well, knocking out other more distant tentacles she couldn't reach.

As this happened, you finally get to Naru. Both Morgan and Nino were unconscious and soaked to the bone.

"They both got hit by a big ass wave." Naru explains. "Knocked them out cold."

You nod and bend down, slinging Morgan over your shoulder and cradling Nino in your arm. The weight of the two girls was nothing to you.

Now you just had to get them out of here.

You manage to cut yourself free with one swing of your halberd, sending you crashing down on the ice below. Thankfully, Lucina and the blue twins were foresighted enough to ice up the water's surface to prevent anyone from falling in, as well as limiting the elemental's mobility.

"Watch it, Templar!" Caroline grunts as she vaults over you and clubs the side of the elemental, freezing a chunk of it. "You're getting in the way!"

"It would be appreciated if you would clear the area." Justin adds as she contributes her own ice attacks, sending a rain of icicles hurtling at the elemental and freezing more sections of it.

"You two of all people should know better than to doubt the Templar's prowess." Lucina grunts as she slashes one of the elemental's arms off, the appendage freezing and shattering to pieces upon impacting the floor.

"Goddamn, will this thing ever die?!" Naru groans as she puts up a fresh barrier, warding off a fresh wave of water sent from the elemental.

"We're fighting on the worst possible terrain." Lucina says grimly. "It keeps drawing moisture from the cistern below and regenerating itself."

"Which means our only remaining option is to eliminate in one decisive strike." Justin concludes calmly. "Caroline, if we use up our remaining mana at once, we should be able to completely immobilize the elemental, if only for a short while."

"Better than nothing, I guess." Caroline groans. "That means you or the Princess have to take care of it!"

However, as you charge up, you can feel the ice rumbling and shaking. Upon realizing what was happening, you quickly push Lucina off of the elemental.

"What are you-?!" Lucina yelps.

And that's when the elemental explodes and shatters, sending ice fragments flying in all directions. You yourself are flung into the air, ice shards flying and slamming into your armor.

Naru's barrier thankfully shields Caroline and Justine form harm, but the two girls were on their knees, completely out of energy. Lucina, given enough time to react thanks to your push, manages to roll behind a support pillar.

You, meanwhile, hit the ground hard. One particularly large ice shard embeds itself into your right shoulder, piercing through the thinner armor around the joint.

But as a tradeoff for that desperate area attack, the elemental's core is exposed, lying on the ice, but water was already starting to pool around it.

Lucina was already dashing forward to stop it. Naru was dashing the opposite way towards you.

The coldness of the ice was causing a paradoxical burning sensation in your shoulder as your nerves reacted negatively the sudden temperature change. Not to mention, the warmth of your blood was also starting to melt said ice, steadily opening up the wound and causing even more bleeding.

You grunt as you get back up to your feet, your halberd hefted in your left hand. You were going to finish this beast, come hell or high water. You sprint after Lucina, running past a very confused and concerned Naru. That elemental could not be allowed to reform.

You ignore the pain, the dizziness, and the intense cold you feel in your body as you charge forward. The elemental was starting to reform, and lashes out a watery appendage at Lucina. You manage to charge in and swing your halberd, smashing the appendage apart and giving Lucina the opening she needs.

Burning with white fire, Lucina's sword plunges into the weakened elemental, instantly flash boiling its body. The core clatters to the ice and Lucina smashes it with a simple boot stomp.

"Thanks, Templar, that was-" Lucina turns to you, her smile instantly turning to a gasp of horror.

It's just now that you realize that you weren't standing anymore. In fact, you were lying on the cold ice, all feeling starting to leave your body. Your perspective immediately shifts as you're put on your back. Naru looks on with grim resolve as she presses both hands and your torn shoulder, and you feel a faint warmth.

Further back, you could see Lucina, Justine, Caroline, and Niko looking down, concern clearly plastered on their faces.

You try to nod, or to raise your hand to let them know you're all right, but your body suddenly feels so very heavy. And so do your eyelids.

Perhaps a nap is in order...

You find yourself engulfed in an endless sea of flame. You stand up and look around, still clad in your armor. Oddly enough, you didn't feel any pain or discomfort at all.

Were... were you in Sol's embrace now? Did that mean you had died...?

NOT YET

You pause and look around, wondering where the source of the voice was, it's booming intensity overwhelming the roar and crackle of the flame around you. Could it be Sol himself talking to you? You had heard stories of Templars and priests having vivid visions of him on the cusp of death-

HEED THESE WORDS, TEMPLAR. THE PATH YOU TRAVEL WILL TAKE YOU PLACES EVEN MY LIGHT CANNOT REACH.

That was an extremely... cryptic warning.

YOUR COMPANIONS MAY LEAD YOU TO SALVATION OR RUIN. TREAD YOUR PATH CAREFULLY.

And just as quickly, everything goes black, as if the flames were snuffed out. You close your eyes and open them again, and are blinded by light. Real light, this time.

"Oh, you're finally awake." Solana's motherly voice floats through your ears. "You were out cold for a while there."

Your eyes begin to adjust, and you see Solana's smiling face. You immediately recognize that you were in the Church infirmary, in one of the private recovery chambers.

"You looked awfully troubled in your sleep for the past few days." Solana continues as she dabs at your forehead with a cloth, wiping away the collected sweat. "Did something happen?"

You make the sign of Sol and point to your eyes.

"A vision of Sol, you say?" Solana leans in closer. "What did He say to you?"

You pause for a second and then shrug.

"Ah, well, that's not surprising." Solana chuckles. "Many of those who have seen Sol say He only speaks cryptically or in riddles."

You frown. That didn't sound very helpful at all.

"What can I say? We mere humans cannot possibly comprehend the motivations or the minds of the gods. To claim otherwise would be, well... rather heretical." Solana smiles.

You then look around, trying to find your armor.

"Ah yes, your armor is currently being held safely in the armory for safekeeping. You were unconscious for quite a while, after all."

You raise an eyebrow. How long were you...?

"You were unconscious for two weeks." Solana explains and pulls away your blanket to reveal your bandaged shoulder wound. "Your main artery was pierced and poor Naru was only barely able to close the wound before you bled to death. Our magic can heal wounds, but we cannot simply create blood out nothing."

You look to Solana again. How were the others? Were the sewers safe now? What about the mage you captured.

"Please, all will be explained later..." Solana tries to calm you down. "Now, I'll tell the others that you've woken up."

The others?

"That Morgan though, she's been here the whole time, waiting for you to wake up." Solana gives you an inquisitive eye. "Did something happen between the two of you...?"

You just simply shrug and Solana laughs lightly.

"In either case, I'll let her know you're awake. Though I have to warn you, she's been quite... well... she'll probably be VERY cross with you."

You nod reluctantly. Whatever Morgan had in store for you, you probably deserved it.

"Well, don't say I didn't warn you." Solana says cheerfully as she opens the door and motions for someone to come in.

And Morgan quickly shuffles into the room, her hood up.

"Now come on, you don't have to slink about the Church like that." Solana remarks.

"But-"

"Not buts. Unlike the Templars we are all a very tolerant lot!" Solana says half-jokingly.

"R-right." Morgan nods as she lowers her hood, revealing her animal features.

"Ohmygosh it just gets cuter every time I see it!" Solana squeals as she rubs Morgan's wolf ears with her hands.

"H-hey! Stop that!" Morgan whines, her cheeks turning pink.

"Oh yes, sorry, you'd probably want the Templar doing that, right? I'll leave you two to your privacy then~!" Solana says happily before quickly exiting and avoiding Morgan's wrath.

"Jeez, she's so weird..." Morgan mumbles before she remembers why she's here and turns her gaze on you. "You... you... IDIOT!"

Morgan then leaps forward, straddling your chest as the nonlethally throttles you and shakes you about.

"DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID LIKE THAT AGAIN!!!" She yells before pausing to wipe tears from her eyes. "Because y-you made a promise to me, remember?"

You reach your good arm up and pat Morgan's head. It was true that you had acted quite recklessly back there, and now you felt rather bad considering how worried you made Morgan.

Your headpat, combined with Morgan venting her frustration finally calms her down and she leans over and presses her forehead to yours.

"It's good to have you back." She whispers.

You ruffle her hair a bit to return the sentiment.

"A-anyways." Morgan coughs as she finally gets off you and sits on one of the chairs at the side of the bed, her cheeks still pink. "A lot's happened while you were out."

You raise an eyebrow. What exactly did she mean?

"Well, first things first, that mage we caught died in Mage custody."

You nearly leap out of the bed. After all the trouble you went through to capture him he just went and died? How?

"We're still not sure what happened." Morgan sighs. "The Mages are trying to stay hush hush about it, but it's likely that he either took his own life or the Mages went overboard in their interrogation. And if he talked, the Mages aren't sharing that info."

Well, that was certainly a problem.

"Semiramis is organizing some sort of big banquet and is inviting all of the city's big shots." Morgan continues. "And get this... she even invited Havel and Ozen and... you."

You almost leap out of your bed again. What was the meaning of this?

"Yeah, we're confused about that as well." Morgan frowns. "Maybe it's a trap, maybe she's just trying to be nice, or maybe it's just an excuse to spy on us. We don't know this point yet."

This was certainly very troubling.

"Anyways, now that you're awake..." Morgan shuffles nervously. "You can head back to the Monastery or... we could stay here a little longer."

You give Morgan a curious look.

"W-what?" Morgan's face goes fully red. "Why are you looking at me like that?!"

You nod and settle into your bed. You don't see the harm in staying here a little longer, even if it were among the stuffy Paladins.

"All right." Morgan nods with a smile on her face. "Oh right, your armor!"

Morgan reaches into her cloak and brings out your helmet. Had... had she been carrying it around the whole time...?

"I figured you want this when you woke up." Morgan says a bit sheepishly. "I know how you always like wearing it."

You give a warm, genuine smile, which causes Morgan to smile too.

"Oh right! The rest of your armor is still in the armory! I'll go fetch it!"

Morgan leans forward and gives you a kiss on the forehead before jogging out. However, she pokes her head back in briefly.

"You do. Not. Leave. This. Room." She says sternly.

You have no choice but to nod.

"Good, because I'll track you down otherwise." Morgan adds before leaving.

Well, you suppose things could have been worse. You turn your helmet over in your hands, slowly remembering the feel of cold steel through your fingertips.

The door begins to open again, revealing...
