ASOIAF Reincarnation: A Male Powder Fantasy – Thread 3

Ninth Month of 285 AC, Heart's Home, The Vale
Powder Storage – 2910 shots worth (3500 Unmixed)
Funds – 54 Golden Dragons and 1870 silver stags
Armament: 30 Flintlock Muskets, 5 Volley Guns
Men: 30 Former Ironborn Peasants, 10 Drifters from Vale

On the last thread you finished the installation of 5 Volley guns unto your longship, upgrading it's firepower. You also met Captain Sark who was at the head of your fleet to Heart's Home and made a lasting first impression on him by causing a scene at the trading company.

You also met up with the rest of the captains belonging to your fleet and demonstrated them exactly how committed you are to not being fucked with. They were all impressed with the armor piercing capabilities of your weaponry. One of them perhaps more than others.

Captain Stallonos offered to purchase your pistols from you in exchange for occult manuals and a bottle of a shade of the evening. An offer that you accepted.

You also finished the construction of a prototype still and brewed a small clay bottle of liquor before setting out to Heart's Home, in which you were greeted by a familiar face.

[1/3]

"I believe it is considered rude to decline an invitation to dine in the Lord's Castle. Ser Randar, if you don't mind introducing us?"
After the shock of surprising reunion, Ser Randar made the introductions.

"Lord Corbray, this is Captain Eddard of the Long Night, third son of Manderik Manden, a highborn Captain from the Iron Isles. It was on his ship that I came to Vale in the first place."

Lord Lyn Corbray was a thin and a handsome man who kept his brown hair at a shoulder-length. He was wearing a very finely crafted tunic of silk and linen coloured and decorated in the likeness of his house colours.

"Ah yes, the nobleman who held pirates for ransom!"
There was a chuckle across the table.
"Truly a pleasure to meet you. Come, sit and eat with us. You are free to stay in the castle for the duration of your stay, I'll have the servants prepare a room. It won't do to have an acquanitance of Randar's sleep out in the cold, much less when he's a nobleman."

You were seated next to Ser Randar on the Lord's table whilst the retainers and guests had their own tables on the sides and a table in the middle filled with various dishes that the guests could help themselves on.

"So, how do you know Lord Corbray?" You decided to ask.

Randar's expression shifts, his eyes soften while his face hardens.
"I fought alongside Ser Lyn in the defense of Gulltown. Bravest and most skilled knight I ever saw. Never shying from danger and always charging onward."
He raises his cup and looks at Lord Corbray with a smile, to which he in turn raises his cup in acknowledgement with a smug look.

Randar doesn't look so smug.
"It was unfortunately a battle that we lost. He yielded to Lord Arryn's forces and accepted the pardon, joining up against the royalists whilst me and my men rushed to the Trident to join Rhaegar's host on the opposing side."

He looks at his food for a moment before continuing.
"He distinguished himself in that battle. After his father was wounded, he picked up his family's Valyrian blade and in a reckless charge slew Lewyn Martell. He is a knight whose valor and loyalty was recognized by both sides of the war."

He begins to cut down on the steak in front of him with a hint of frustration.
"Apparently, that achievement was enough that rather than suffer sanctions and levy restrictions for raising his blade against his liege, he was instead awarded a gold stipend by the crown and his family exempted for any and all punishments that would be set upon the rest of the loyalist houses."

You notice one of the servants going to Lord Corbray and whispering something on his ear whilst Randar was talking.
He says something, but you can't tell what to the manservant and the manservant disappears after a moment.

>GAYDAR ACTIVATED
Hm? That's funny, it seems that there's only male servants...
You take a look around for a moment.

Wait a minute... This is a complete sausage fest! Not a single woman in sight. Wait... Sausage. There sure seems to be a lot of it at the table. Curious, it's not really a food nobility normally likes overmuch... Perhaps he picked that habit up during the war?
Wait. Interior decoration adheres strictly to color scheme, well dressed, clean shaven, has obviously put some effort into keeping his hair clean, scented candles, exotic foods...
Oh and there's also a bunch of burly sailors on the table as well.

Hmm...
You take solid three gulps of wine from your goblet. Ok, clearly nothing to see there.

"So, what brings you here Captain Eddard. Did you reconsider my offer and divine my location with heathen magics?"
"Not really, I just picked the only job that was available for a Captain like myself. Unfortunately, I hear it's plagued by clansmen."

"Yes, the sanctions that the crown has enforced upon the former loyalists have hit them hard and Lord Corbray is very much the exception."
"With the levy restrictions in place and the diminished manpower from the war, the losing side faces hard times in the Vale as the mountain clans have figured out many of the houses which cannot afford to go on the offense anymore."

He looks approvingly at Lord Corbray
"Lord Corbray has already petitioned Lord Arryn of the Vale to be more lenient in the military limitations for so that the lords could raise sufficient amount of men at arms to be more than just on the defensive, but it's likely that it will take at least a year, maybe two in the worst case to actually get approved."

"Bah! Enough about boring political garbage. Let's have a look at the goods that you've brought for us."

The manservant that was previously whispering comes up with a box that looks similiar to some of the ones that were loaded on your ship and places it on the floor in front of the table where you and the rest of the nobility were eating.

He slides open the box and produces a bottle, which he presents to the Lord.
"Myrish Firewines! About damn time. My cellar has had to deal months without."
He opens it without hesitation.
"Take the rest to the cellar. Tell me Eddard, can I call you Eddard? Have you ever tried firewines? The burn from them is quite something."

Unrelated question. Any of you nibbas know when syrup and the sugar made from syrup actually started popping up in Europe?
>>
>>2110506
If europe had trees capable of producing syrup, even prehistoric societies would have harvested it, considering that native americans got that sweet maple juice since they pretty much got to the continent.
>>
>>2110506
Not particularly but I could look into it.
>>
>>2110547
See, I know that in Canada sap was harvested since time immemorial.
Can't seem to figure out though at which point Europeans figured out Syrup.

It seems to me that until people showed up in the new world, Europeans were importing sugar from the west indies.

Just like how Indians didn't have he wheel, the Europeans might have neglected Syrup.
>>
>>2110563
Well, the world of a song of ice and fure is pretty close together in comparison. So you could say non honey/syrup sugar sources are easier to aquire than in real life.
>>
>>2110551
> http://www.sucrose.com/lhist.html
According to this site sugar arrived in Europe after the crusades of the eleventh century but the only date as to it's actual recording given is 1099, in Britain. It however is unclear as to it's use by this point in time beyond being a spice.

Given this fact it is up to you OP to decide if it would be applicable for use in Westeros. However I would point out that much of what was needed to make it available to the rich in the real world is available in Westeros and Essos thanks to the supply of slaves and warm, wet growing enviroments.

I found a few alternatives as well:

A roman fruit reduction / fruit syrup.

Technically this would work but it would require selective breeding to raise sugar content and an existing market for such a substance and such. You could bullshit a plant like this existing naturally mind you and it wouldn't exactly be too far off.

>>2110563
Seems according to Wikipedia we got to it in the 1600's. The locals showed us how to get it.

As to the importation of sugar, some was produced in Europe but the costs of it's production and the limited usable arable land prohibited it being of any note.
>>
>>2110574
>Fire*
Plus its not like sugar is hard to come by in the first place. Aside from honey, the reach has a load of fruits and stuff that are native to the area, some imported as well
>>
>>2110574
Well, the North is fantastically underdeveloped, so I wouldn't put it past them if they didn't know of it. Unless I can hear reference to it, that's another invention you could make.
>>
>>2110576
Sugar is definitely a thing in Essos. I would Imagine Volantis would be pretty big on that trade.

Reason why I am looking for sugar is because you need sugar for rum.
>>
>>2110611
Eh, if we can't get sugar for rum we can make whisky or another high strength alcohol.
>>
>>2110611
Extracting sugar crystals from honey and syrup is pretty straight forward, I dont see why we would need an easily accesible sugar plant in the first place.
>>
>>2110627
Of course it would be preferable if we had actual sugar but my point still stands.
>>
>>2110627
True, honey is often used for this purpose.
Point was that Syrup from tree sap is probably not something that probably exists.
>>
Syrup made from Weirwood sap distilled into liquor.

>"No, I must admit I have not." Take the drink

"I must admit that I have not, though I most certainly would be open to the idea of trying some."
He pours some into your goblet and you begin tasting. Rich flavour, sweet yet spicy taste and a pleasant scent. You can feel the sugary texture of the drink as it flows ever so slightly thicker than water down your throat, giving a nice warm burn as it makes it's way down to your belly.
You estimate it's alcohol content being somewhere between 20-30% Overall rather strong for a wine.

"How do you like it?"
"Exquisite. It goes down smoothly. The Flavor is quite rich. I can see why people are paying so much to have it imported. It would seem I need to improve my product quite a bit to compete with this."
He looks at you a bit surprised
"Oh? You own a vineyard?"
"Not exactly. I have a little side project going on which is an attempt to create a stiff drink. While there really isn't much flavor thus far, I can certainly boast that mine will not lose to the firewines if it's just sheer potency."

He looks at you as if that caught his curiosity.
"Really now? I would very much like to try this drink of yours."
"I actually do have a sample piece on my travelsack if one of the servants wouldn't mind fetching it? It's the small clay bottle and oh, bring the little wooden cups as well.

Once the servant returned with your belongings, you requested him to bring some tinder from one of the candleboxes.

"Now, the way you can tell the drink is really strong..."
You pour some hootch into the makeshift shot glasses
"Is when you can do this."
You took the light from one of the candles on the table and ignited it with the piece of tinder. As you did so, the people around you started looking at you a bit warily as the blue flames danced from the cup.
"Now then..."
You rise up and grab the makeshift shot glass.
"Bottoms up."
With an excessive motion you pour the still flaming liquid down your throat with some the guests covering their mouths as they look at you go.

The taste... Well, it's nothing to write home about. It's just straight up vodka. Doesn't really taste of much more than Ethanol.

After seeing you pull off your stunt, Lord Corbray grabs his shot and smells it a bit.
"Smells a bit like you could get drunk from just the humours."
"You actually can. Eventually"
He looks at you skeptically
"I guess I'll have to take your word for it. Light me up."

He stays there looking at the blue flames for a moment. Giving the pretense of hesitation as if it's too crazy to even try until finally dropping the act and pouring it down his throat in an excessive motion. As he did, the hall erupted in clapping and cheers.
"It burns when it goes down, I'll admit that much. I think I do still prefer the firewines for the taste though."
>>
>>2112229
[2/2]
You pour another shot
"Randar you care to try as well?"
He looks at you for a moment and then at the drink like he is unsure
"Oh, what the hell."

Lord Lyn grabs the piece of tinder and forcibly lights up the drink while Randar was still watching it. After a few moments of watching the blue flames in mental preparation, he decides to close his eyes and bite the bullet.
As Lord Lyn Corbray began clapping, the rest of the hall soon followed.

Lyn grabs your bottle and cups and walks around deciding to push few others into submitting to drink the burning cup. The Spectacle of hesitation, drinking of fire and cheers was repeated a few more times until the bottle finally ran dry.
"I simply must get some more bottles of this... What do you call this drink anyhow?"

It should be pointed out that should he accept your offer and you remain here to construct a distillery for him, you will be forfeiting your current assignment and all the bonuses attributed to it as you did not finish the job.

I suppose we could also offer him the opportunity to house part of our start up enterprise as a business proposition. But that would have to take place later down the line when we have less responsibilities and have more manoeuvring room
>>
>>2112367
You probably should know that you don't exactly have any property rights or (any other rights for that matter) save the ones that the Lord of that region says you have.

Properties can be seized and incomes sequestered with or without justification depending on how honorable the Lord is.
The Greyjoy Rebellion would most certainly be a good justification for any lord to take all your investments for himself if you started up a business on his lands. It's as normal as is pillaging the countryside for supplies.

If you wish to start up a distillery for your own, that's entirely doable, but I should also warn you that without sufficient rank and status or political clout, it's almost certainly going to be leaving your hands for good the moment Greyjoy rebellion starts.

If you want to invest on anything. You need a title or a strong patron. Preferably both. It should also be pointed out that Lords can tax you as much as they fucking want. If they think you're making too much money, they can just plunder your enterprise.

We must protect our secrets for long term benefit rather than a large short term profit. After this trip we can look into creating a larger scale distillery or something but I'd rather we focus on military and naval affairs over alcohol production.
>>
>>2112395
Yep. Once we've got a decent base there we can consider creating a distillery even to be worked by the locals or something but for now, the benefits are outweighed by risks.
>>
>>2112395
Yea my take on the world of Ice and Fire is rather bleak.
Essentially, every single nation in the world is dysfunctional in their own way, but the only alternative to these dysfunctional nations is the rampant, savage rapine that happens outside of their borders.

The so called "free folk" break exchange their shackles of society so they may live with even less comforts than the slaves in a world where everyone must be equally miserable or face the animosity of the tribes less fit to survive who seek to steal all they have and split it amongst each other.

The Kingdoms of Westeros are ruled by bunch of semi-communistic military dictatorships bundled under a much larger dictatorship.

Braavos is arguably least affected by inherent systematic problems as it affords a great degree of freedom to it's citizens, but there's a different sort of problems in there.

The Slave cities obviously live under constant threat of rebellions and as such must cater to the whims of both Mercenary Companies as well as the Dothraki.

Summer Isles have long since been in decline as their traditions of breeding and pacifism have lead to a vast overpopulation on their little island that they solve by having to exile more and more people and no direction other than towards savagery.
Those that survive this fate are certainly not happy.

Then there's always Dany, who recognizes that shit be broke, but she is too incompetent to leave anything but ashes in her wake. She realizes that the city is suffering due to slavers ruling the city, but cannot seem to realize why the slaves she put in charge would be overthrown when she leaves no fighters to enforce that rule.
She gets rid of slavery, but doesn't end the old rulers, leaving them with their lands if they submit.
This also doesn't work because she doesn't realize that almost all the farms are run on slave labor, which means famine will follow.
She later tries to resolve this problem by cultivating trade with her enemies so she can begin importing food.

In this world, there is no happy ending if you don't make one.
The world has largely remained stagnant for thousands of years save for when Valyria was destroyed and world lost a lot of knowledge and the world will remain stagnant for a thousand more years when you're gone if nothing changes.
In a sense, this world is very much like a Limbo
>>

>Summer Isles have long since been in decline as their traditions of breeding and pacifism have lead to a vast overpopulation on their little island that they solve by having to exile more and more people and no direction other than towards savagery.
...How competent are they as farmers and shit? If we're lucky we can use these guys to bulk out our own numbers in non-combat roles when we've secured some land since they seem fairly good for that sort of thing.
>>
>>2112460
Not in the least.
You move any farmer north or south and they need to be reeducated because the crops and soil are completely different.
This is why empires historically expanded east and west, not north and south.

Had Starks decided to fight against Aegon, much like Dorne, they would have been unconquered for this reason. You cannot hold on to land of it produce insufficient food.
>>
>>2112460
Also, there's massive cultural and religious gap between you and they would view you as an uncultured savage because you are white.

You'd have to pull out all the stops if you want to become king of the nibbes

>>
>>2112465

>>2112475

>>2112494

>>
>>2112541
Wouldn't it make more sense to sell the boozemakers then? We could invest the moneys on guns.

Moonshine isn't exactly lethal technology and if we are not planning on making an empire with it, why not ditch it?
Best case scenario, we can buy some cheap antiseptics and possible fuel everywhere.
>>

>>2112550

Why do you think he would make introductions for you? You are at most a friend of a friend if even that.
>>
>>2112586
He seems interested in having more of our drink. If we can convince him to invest in the production of that and prove his belief right then he'll almost certainly listen if we mention other inventions.

Still though, I'd rather focus on getting ourselves stronger militarily for the eventual conflicts so we can profit. That and if we can get a proper boat we can work on better versions of our inventions while we travel between places. So if it proves too hard, no loss to me since I mostly want to focus on getting more ships, men and then a base of some sort.

Besides. Selling the idea for a distllery is much more profitable and less risky than a goddamn shipping job for some merchants guild.

tl;dr. Think before voting, and stop acting paranoid and being a dipshit Westerosi

>Friday update. Don't judge

"Spirits, that's what they're called. Name comes from the method of manufacture. In a sense, they contain the spirits of regular beverages. The exact method of manufacture I'm afraid I cannot yet divulge."

He nods approvingly
"Yes, of course. Something like this would obviously be a trade secret shared only between family members. Still, where who would I talk to getting a box of this stuff into my cellar?"

You give him an apologetic shrug
"I am sorry, but that is all there is. We just drank all the spirits in all of existence. That's the last of the only batch that has ever been made of that drink. It'll take time for me to make some more. Alothough once I get facilities set up, I'll personally send you some bottles for taste testing if you'd like."

He smiles and raises his cup
"I'll look forward to it then."

After the parlor trick of drinking fire from a cup, things sort of quieted down. Sark regaled the audience with tales of slavers, pirates and spicers from the Stepstones until the desserts were served. Slices of blueberry pie with some whipped cream. After enjoying it with relish, people started to head to off.

Whilst you were dining, the servants showed you to one of the guest rooms. Not a particularly large room, but there was at least a decent enough bed. Sturdy old wooden thing with a wool mattress suspended on ropes. Beats sleeping on the ship at least.

It'll still take whole of tomorrow to swap out the cargo, which means that you'll leave in the morning in the day after. Dangerous journey for sure, but you need to make the money somehow. You certainly aren't one of those people who are satisfied with just what they've got.

That means you'll still have one day to spend in this rather magnificent old castle.
During your stay you...

We can do that after the major revolution that we know is coming since that'd either destroy or make us lose control of any such establishment. Plus we can refine our distillery further so the longer we hold off setting up the bigger our initial output and shit.

Also we are making money. Quite good money all things considered given that we've incurred low costs on this trip ignoring the volley guns and gambelson (which we'd want anyway) since they are a one-time investment.

Fact is once we've done this job the guild will have more reason to trust us and we can see about getting a better ship or something to enable bigger missions and shit.

>>2113633
I'll back this.

>>2113713
This.

The simple fact is we've got a solid plan: get more men, ships and guns. When the revolt comes, fight as a merc and get rich before or after conquering part of the stepstones and create our own mini-empire. Fact is if we can get to 200 men we can start acting as a merc company. Not to mention the potential we have as siege engineers since walls are a serious obstacle without cannon.
>>
>>2113689
Alchemy is a real thing.
It's got three facets to it.
Because treatises on alchemy tend to be so filled with allegory and encryption in form of symbolism in an attempt to keep the idiots who don't know what they're doing away, the layman reads it as if they're talking about transmuting lead to gold and doing all sorts of other mystical stuff.

The learned, spiritual man reads deeper philosophical meaning from it and sees it as a as a ritualistic pursuit of enlightenment and doesn't even consider the pursuit of materialistic gain.

Finally there's the actual scientific facts buried beneath the allegory, the pictures and the colorful speech that can be unlocked after a great deal of study.

"Our Gold Is Not The Common Gold
It is the immortal Gold.
Cheap. Cheap. Cheap.
Despised by fools.
Appreciated by the Wise."

The ASOIAF Alchemy differs from the real life one in the sense that it's extremely difficult to tell apart at which point they're talking about a magical phenomenon and at which part a more natural one.
The truth in Alchemy is hidden under a mountain of lies and many more naive Alchemists might believe some of those lies or who knows? Maybe the Philosopher's stone is a real object rather than a symbolic way to describe spiritual enlightenment?

The rituals remain similiar still to real alchemy and there are factions based around the different philosophies in my take of the Alchemist's guild.

They can't exactly seize your assets if they're liquidated.

If you're not owning distilleries, but rather selling them.
Like you manufacture the complete package which allows the lords to begin production of their own alcoholic spirits, you can keep your operation a lot smaller as you basically just sail to their lands and they pay you to set up the shop.

As your actual business isn't tied to any land, they can neither seize your assets nor sequester your incomes since that sort of thing is beneath them.
They could try to seize your ship and crew for military operations, but I'd assume you'd got enough guns by that point that it's not so realistic of a concern.
>>
>>2113767
Like, it's beneath them because it'd be akin to banditry since they'd be stealing from you without having any claim for it unlike if you'd build on their land.
>>
>>2113767
There is still virtually nothing in place to stop then from confiscating due payments and royalties however. So it would be infinitely more secure and eventually profitable to maximize our modern knowlede and condense all of our production in our domestic hold.
>>
>>2113781
>Royalties
You wouldn't get any in the first place as there simply is no such thing as intellectual property rights.
Also, you obviously wouldn't want to run that business during wartime.
>>
>>2113781
Also, how do you plan on maximizing your knowledge or getting lands with no money, connections or achievements to your name?

If you forever hold your secrets close to your chest, then you will die with them without your greatest achievement being a longship captain who was rumored to have magical powers.
>>
>>2113810
I'm with the anon that we need to make some cash. Gear up our guys, and go through some fights with them.
Always remember put some one we fully trust over some one more capable if the mission is of priority.
Making out vets feel worth while to stick with us. And letting those know we stick with/support our own.
We need to set up a merc army of sorts. With guns we can easily deal with 3-4 times our numbers on land especially when using rotations. And once we create cannons we can do the same with every large ship we install them on.
A line of musketeers shooting every 10 seconds is a scary thing. Even at 10 a line. By the time any enemy gets to our front line we have easily won moral wise.
We should just look into training our men to hold their own for an actual fight. And armor that does well resisting arrows.

I only tend to lock in votes if it's got 4 votes going for it.
Alchemy's only got 3 I think.

Although I doubt it's really going to change, I don't feel like changing my habits since it there's been many cases where 3 votes is not enough to seal the deal.
>>
>>2114028
Fair enough.
>>
https://youtu.be/mzsdORUPk48
Fun little experiment I found.
>>
To be fair we could probably greatly increase our numbers if we focused on it for a short time. I mean if the mountain tribes are threatening shipping they must have ships of their own which we can almost certainly board, capture and then make use of ourselves either selling them for funds or directly. At the point we have 5 ships crewed and equipped like our current one we'll have 25 volley guns with 50 rowing and firing crews backed by 150 musketmen and whatever else we decide to produce or procure.

At that point we'd be a damn strong force for whomever hires us. Able to pierce the strongest armour and defeat the fiercest charge. Hell throw in a bombard or two and we'd fuck up castles too.
>>
>>2114106
And inventing reasonably effective pinapple grenades would be very easy, as well as to produce them. At that point we could certainly take and hold a stronghold within a day.
>>
>>2114272
Yep. The only potential threats would be sheer numbers overwhelming our fire-rate and supply of gunpowder, a force of long range archers, cavalry (dubious) or a dragon (a fair bit less dubious but still questionable) along with spies and shit.

Although we could counter most of these problems by taking a page from the Mongols and having literally everything mounted either onto a cart or on a horse.

Whilst waiting for the peasants to handle loading up your cargo, you decide to relax a bit and grab one of the esoteric books that you traded some of your esoteric weaponry for whilst enjoying tea in the gracious Lord's Garden.

>12 on discovery of hidden meanings
>18 on deciphering the allegories
>18 on real life application of the knowledge

>????

You took a comfortable position, relaxed and began reading, but what you expected wasn't exactly what you got. You were sort of expecting a short manual on alchemy, but what you got was something else entirely.

Every single sentence was loaded with several layers of hidden meanings and references to things you did not know. You read a sentence once, you get one meaning. You read the page, you get a different one. Finish the chapter and the meaning of that sentence had once again changed for you as you realize it could mean something entirely different.

This book may be a short one, but you could tell that whomever wrote this put a lot of effort making it as hard to read as possible. You are not entirely certain what this book is even referring to with the art of blackening. Spiritual transformation required on the path to enlightenment? Magical art which is the first step towards creating the philosopher's stone? Highly encrypted method of trying to teach the reader about fermentation, acids and distillation?

Only through experimentation and further study could truly lead you towards the true answer, if this book even offers any answers to begin with? For all you know, it could just as well be a catalyst required to push you towards the path of "the art" as it refers to it.

However, as you continued to read through this short little book, you think you found yourself more or less on the same page with the author on many of the things. Going over the book several times, his references to animals and symbols seemed to make more and more sense. You don't know how much of the works of the author are based on reality, but this is indeed a multi-layered book.

It explains the spiritual and physical transmutation of self required in order to practice the most basic form of alchemy and the ritualistic path to reach the state of facing one's own shadows.

It explains that through combination of both understanding of the world and the spiritual elevation of facing one's own shadows leaving behind the undesired parts of himself, he had purified himself, reaching a state of the calcination, the state of body reflected in the state of the mind and the spirit.

"He who feels the Call of the Great Work must be willing to die to be reborn. You must go through each of the Alchemical transmutation stages, which will make him from a man of lead to a man of gold."
>>
>>2115934

Your exploration of the Higher Mysteries shows some promise.

>Congratulations! You've uncovered the secret to create various mineral acids!
>Congratulations! Your understanding of the medieval fermentation and distillation techniques has increased!
>Congratulations! You've discovered a shady-ass ritual which inolves imbibing some weird potion that may or may not kill you!
>Congratulations! You can now make such things as Hydrochloric acid (Spirit of Salts) amongst other things, provided you pay for the materials!
>>
We should acid attack the unburned half of the Hound's face.

As you finish studying your little book, you stretch out and yawn.
As your awareness of your surroundings returns, you notice another man reading in the gardens as well. Clad in robes and with a necklace of chain with each link forged from different metals hanging from his neck he reacts to you as you close your book and rise by halting his own studies.

Sitting on a table with a heavy tome and a teapot from which emananted the scent of boiled mint leaves he speaks to you.
"It's a good place to read is it not? The light and the wind is just perfect in there."
You give a quick look at your place of relaxing study.
"It seems I've stolen your spot Maester."
He pours some tea for himself.
"Oh worry not. Seeing my reading spot taken is a small price to pay for seeing more highborn willing to take their time studying about the world rather than obsessing over the sport of horseback impalement."
He realizes what he just said and puts up an apologetic expression.
"Apologies if I've offendeded you."
You smile at the odd man.
"None taken there weren't many horses in the Isles."
"Tea?"
"Oh, please."
You offer your empty cup to him that you were drinking from during your studies.
"Maester Narmen"
"Captain Eddard of the Long Night"
"Ah yes, the man with the flaming cups."
"Parlor tricks, nothing more."

The Maester looks over and gives points at your little book.
"Forgive me, but I'm curious, what sort of book would it be that has an Ironborn Captain so enthused?"

"It's an Alchemy tome called the Spirit of Salts, I acquired it from some shady Braavosi."
The Maester laughs
"Trying to figure out how to turn Lead to Gold are you? Sorry, I shouldn't mock. Yes, I believe I too read a tome with that name in the Citadel. Filled to brim with superstitious hogwash covered in complex language and nonsensical allegory."

He extends his hand
"Mind if I take a look?"
You shrug, thinking it probably wouldn't hurt and let him have a gander of your booklet.

He grabs it and flips over a few pages.
"Yes, definitely the same book. I wouldn't waste any more time trying to figure it out. It's just the way Alchemists like to frustrate true seekers of knowledge. They leak out nonsensical Grimoires every now and then that hold not even a shred of truth and then teach their secrets to their apperentices behind closed doors."

He gives the book back to you.
"Don't worry. It's a common trend that the more learned nobles try to pick up an alchemy book at least once in their lives. There is no shame in that."

He goes back and sits on his table.
"You want cold, hard truths, you can find no better place for them in all of Westeros than the Citadel. I recommend you visit if you ever have the chance. It's really one of the few places in Westeros where you can find learned men."

I wonder if alchemy is worth the effort on the whole but we can always sell these books once we've read them. Who knows, we might learn to do something that we can't with science.
>>
...*can* we dissolve gold? I thought we just learned how to do some acids; isn't gold insoluble?

If we can dissolve gold then yeah, go for it.

Also; nth-ing the asking about a reward for contributing to the Citadel.

It will give you information in basic chemistry even if you fail to unlock any of the magic shit.

"I think this thing is pretty straightforward once you get through all the allegory and loaded language. I think it might just be their culture to talk like that, kind of like dockworkers have their own lingo."

He chuckles
"Secret wisdoms only for the initiated, right? I've heard that before. I wouldn't put much stock on whatever you learned from that thing."
You look at him smugly and reply
"Wanna put your money where your mouth is?"
He looks amused and a bit intrigued
"Go on."
"This page here, Green Lion devouring the Sun. I'm pretty sure it refers the dissolution of gold. Wanna bet I can pull it off with the instructions from this book and the raw materials that are described in this book?"
He thinks for a moment, as if knowing he shouldn't but at the same time tempted to do it anyway.
"That's all well and good, but what would we be betting on?"

>Gold
>Books
>Something else? (What?)

"By the way, what rewards would there be to contributing to the Citadel?"
He looks at you with a bit of a puzzled expression
"Well that depends what you mean by contributing. The Conclave does frequently pay people who bring them rare books as well as bring them copies of the more in demand books. Although that's primarily for commoners. Nobility tend to deal more in favors and the favor of the Conclave can go a long way as Maesters sort of are in most every court."
He lowers his voice
"So if you come across a collection of books or scrolls, even old records, the Citadel would certainly not forget any such donation."

You think for a moment.
Developing a functional printing press would certainly be a way to earn money or favour with the Citadel depending on how you would utilize it. Of course, you'd have to design one first, but that's a worry for another time.

>>
>>2118630
I should point out that the only books you have to gamble with are the esoteric books and that naturally since you've never done this before, you'd need to actually roll for knowledge to see how well you can pull it off on first try.

Also, if you lose your alchemy book, it means you lose the recipes as well since you didn't exactly memorize them this far.
You could of course re-research them a lot easier.
>>

ehh let's bet on gold. That's something we can recoup easy as.

>Of course my lord is trustworthy and wonderful and he is always truthful, forthcoming and honest with his peoples. Certainly my lord would never abuse his position for personal gain like some sort of scoundrel.

Is he gay
>He doesn't take it in the butt if that's what you're asking.

What kind of favors are the conclave able to pull?
Ok, now this is something I could actually realistically answer.
The Conclave has connection to more or less every single Maester in existence.

This means they have the ear of almost every single important person in existence.
This means that if you say... Wanted to go and convince one of the Lords Paramount to swear vassalage to them, they could possibly make that meeting happen with just their recommendation.
It would be up to you to actually convince them that you're worth the job though.

There's also the issue of educated labor.
Learned men aren't that common in Westeros.
You've got the guys in the guilds who are the only specialists in their fields, but the quality of their craft wildly varies due to the nepotism.

You've got the Maesters who know a bit of everything, but usually more than most about those subjects that then study into the role they're put into. Essentially they've got a general civilizing education with whatever they've researched. Their education is paid for by the clients, so you can get idiot Maesters as well who just had their links bought and paid for.

Then you've got the learned men who received religious education. These guys know how to read and they're a lot less bookish than the Maesters but tend to be pretty talented since the clergy only pays for education of those who are promising.

The Maesters control the largest source of accumulated knowledge in the Seven Kingdoms in the form of Library of the Citadel though and their prestige as a font of knowledge does go a long way when people ask which guild should they hire for which job.
>>
Couple of things that I terms people ought to understand.

Honor
Literally means how much you care about how people think of you. If you are thought of highly, people think you're honorable. Honor is not synonymous with conscience. Being obsessed with one's image is Honorable and that's essentially the moral system feudal world operates on.

Conscience
This is the thing that Tyrion has. It's the moral sense of right and wrong. Almost every single noble values honor over Conscience. Indeed, nobility who act with Conscience are few indeed. Those that do tend to fail. Good players who play the Grand Game know which pieces they need and which they don't and are quick to discard those that no longer have use to them at the first chance given.

Prestige
This is the thing that generally speaking views your value to society itself. The more prestigious you are, the more valuable people think you are. The more valuable people think you are, the more they care about what you say. The more they care about what you say, the more likely they're to ask or give favors to you.

Fame
This is the thing that measures how much people talk about you. The more famous you are, the more likely people are to try and seek you out just because they're curious about you. Prestige and fame do not always go hand in hand.

Favors
Though not always honored, they are a currency far too valuable to ignore. Gold can only achieve so much and after certain point, you realize that your gold only exists for the purpose of generating favors with the right people in order to not only maintain your position, but also to grow in strength.
Once you start dealing with exchanges between settlements, between towns, between cities, between fiefs. Gold begins to lose it's value rapidly as things that simply cannot or should not be bought with gold start to become more common.
The higher up you go, the less wealth will be associated with stores of mere coin.

Bet on

>Something else

Specifically; a favour to be named at a later date. This fellow may be able to get us in good with the Citadel at some point.

Also; would the Citadel *really* welcome the advent of the printing press, a device whose primary purpose is the quick and easy dissemination of information? When their entire position is based on having a monopoly on such information?
>>
Status
The story of nobles who simply ended up being pushed out from high society is all too common. Either they fell out of favor or simply no longer had anything that anyone else was interested in because they were either too incompetent to hire or too untrustworthy or otherwise not worth having in one's court.

Being forgotten by the high society to a nobleman is nearly equal to a death sentence as they will hit a brick wall. Sure, they may no longer be involved in any of the schemes of the highborn, but they will no longer enjoy any of the rewards that came with navigating that territory.

Even when they manage to find something that their noble friends might benefit from, loss of status is a hefty blow to a nobleman. Markets dictate that your product is only worth as much as you can sell it for. When nobody's willing to buy from you, any product you have in your hands suddenly isn't worth a dick.

You are not of high enough status that you can casually mingle with the lords, so don't take the ability to meet with important people for granted. They will in all likelihood, simply refuse to see you like all so many would be sycophants because you're not important enough.
Unless you prove yourself worthy, your opportunities will remain few.
>>
>>2118677
Not if you you try to horn in on their territory.
If you try to upset their oligopoly position on the sale of literature, they will try their best to make sure you're a social leper.

If you instead work with them, such as selling them printing presses or offering them such a copying service, without trying to cut in on their market share, they'd most likely welcome it.

The Citadel would naturally have some books they'd never copy to anyone, but with printing press the Maesters that do exist on the field could all have the exact same set of books with the fraction of the price since they'd be more available.
This would be of value to them as it makes their job a lot easier.

Also, Maesters are the primary clients of the Citadel Library, so the less the Maesters themselves copy books, the more books the Citadel can sell to them, which means if they can drop the prices enough, they will be increasing the demand for certain commonly desired tomes.
>>
>>2118677
But yea, if you want to get good on with the Citadel through a favor, it's a simple enough matter of writing a letter of recommendation for him.

That would more or less guarantee you one meeting with an Archmaester
>>

Well then super-duper, Gary Cooper! That's the bet; a letter of recommendation to the Citadel vs... I dunno, a sloppy blow jibber or whatever he wants.

>Gold

[1/3]

"Gold would be a fairly straightforward bet, right?"
He looks at you little disappointed.
"What? I'm not a man who bets things he can't afford to lose."
"No, no, I think that's a good policy. Still, gambling for money is a bit plain don't you think?"
You shrug
"Seems to work for the enthusiasts of horseback impalement."
He chuckles at this
"True enough, true enough. So how much do you think betting on this?"
"How about the cost of a suit of plate armor? 10 gold dragons ought to be good."
He thinks for a moment.
"Yes, I believe such an amount of coin ought not to be too outlandish for either of us. I'll let you borrow the materials from my laboratory for it."

He guides you to his little office room. On the table there were weights, scales, cups of various sizes, mortar and pestle and some glass containers clearly labeled with their contents. He also had a full bookshelf, indicating that he clearly had the funding to back up his confidence.

"Rock salts, Alum, Lime, Saltpeter and Green Vitriol, these are what I believe were described in the books. Can I borrow some of the glass containers as well?"
He shrugs
"As long as you clean them up afterwards and don't break them, it's fine by me. Not that I couldn't buy new ones with the Gold I'm about to win, but it's still an inconvinience."
"Thanks. I'll head to my ship and get to work. We'll see at dinner whether or not this book had any truth to it or whether alchemy is just hogwash."
He waves you away.
"How mysterious. Go on then. Do your little rituals or whatever you need to do in order to conjure this water of the kings."

You headed back to your ship and got to work. Your little still needed a bit modification to work, but you managed to get it working. The results... were not exactly as you'd liked it.
As you began making the acids, you came to an unfortunate realization. Copper is soluble with Nitric Acid. This means that your little still would be unusable for this sort of work.

>Knowledge 19

However, you did manage to come up with a quick makeshift solution. It only needs to work once, so you bought some clay pots of the right shape in order to make a makeshift alembic to create your acids. Now, you had no idea if this would work, but you were running out of time. There was no proper gas seal, but fuck it. You just needed to gather the fumes.

The Calcinated Alum, The Saltpeter, the Green Vitriol were all heated in your makeshift Alembic to produce the "Primal Water". The fumes were harvested, cooled and stored, a substance that if the book is to be believed, should be able to dissolve silver.

The Spirit of Salts you managed to create through bubbling the fumes of the Rock Salt through your normal still before damaging it with the Primal Water.

Primal Water mixed with the Spirit of the Salts ought to be able to produce the water of the Kings. All that remains is wait for the dinner to unveil this little concoction.

[2/3]

The spread was lavish as it was yesterday and many of those present were already eating as you and Maester Narmen approached Lord Lyn Corbray.

"Forgive us for disturbing your dinner oh Lord, but there's been a bit of a disagreement we'd hope you'd give us a helping hand in."
Lord Lyn has a look of being on the edge between annoyance and curiosity as Maester Narmen addresses him
"You see, me and Captain Eddard had a little bet and I hope you could be a witness to us as we solve which of us were right."
His annoyance fading a bit, he asks
"What sort of bet was this?"
"It was a simple one. He bet me he could melt gold with the information he peered from some shady alchemy manual. I bet him he couldn't."
He claps his hands and smiles at the two of you
"More parlor tricks then?"
"We shall see won't we? The Price of this bet was 10 Gold Dragons to be paid for the winner of the bet. We were hoping that you, as a third party, would produce the coin which we would be testing this on."
He waves at the direction of a servant.
"Get the pouch we seized from the smuggler."
Upon receiving his pouch, he grabs some foreign looking tiny gold coin and flicks one over to Maester Narmen who catches it.
"Now, since this is a refreshing change of pace from the normal tedium, if anyone else feels like betting as well on the result of this, now is the time."

Apparently gambling was not just something that was done by sailors and pirates. Nobility too seemed to enjoy the game of chance just as well. Maybe that explains why there's so many blood feuds that the families have with eachother?

As Lord Lyn states that, Captain Sark eagerly yells out.
"20 Dragons on Captain Teach! Any takers? ANY TAKERS!?"
As you turn your head to the direction of the excited yelling, you see Stallonos smile smugly at this scenario.
Locke and Stallonos seemed to be perfectly happy of taking on that bet.

After a few moments of bets being placed by the people standing at the hall, you began your work.
You took the two chemicals you'd concocted and poured them together into one of the glass jars, sealing it with the cork and give it a good shake, creating a liquid with a distinct orange hue.

You drop the tiny golden penny into the liquid and place the glass jar into the table as everyone watches the little coin just bubble away in your solution.
The Maester watches as the little coin dissolve as the liquid begins to turn more yellowy as he does his best to keep a poker face.
Lord Lyn smirks
"It would seem that the Coin is indeed gone. Captain Eddard wins the bet."

As you look at the reactions, you saw plenty of self-satisfied looks as well as sour faces of those who were annoyed for backing the wrong horse.
Captain Sark was rubbing his hands with a shiteating grin.

After the little parlor trick, Dinner ended up proceeding rather quietly. Maester Narmen seemed rather skeptical whether or not you actually procured that substance from your ship or actually made it yourself today. However, he wasn't such a poor sport as to call you a straight out cheater. He simply implied it strongly.
You did get the money off him in the end though.

As you were about to retire for the day, the candles in your room suddenly all go out.
Immediately following that, there was a knock on the the door.
It was the shady book dealing Braavosi.
"Good evening Stallonos. I must say, the book has already paid itself off quite marvelously."

He had a bit more tense look on his face.
"Do you still have the water of the kings?"
"I might do. What's it to you?"
"What do you want for it?"
"You mean the recipe or the actual physical object?"
"Both."

>How do you reply?
>>
>>2121308
Shit what kind of value does it have?
>>
>>2121315
You could always try and ask him why he wants it before making the final decision.
Not that you have any reason to trust anything that he says.
>>
>>2121308
Ask him what he is willing to pay, because it would have to be a great deal to run afoul of the Alchemists. And I say run afoul because they are clearly unwilling to sell it to him outright so he had to pass around the book and see if anyone else could figure it out.

Then try to buy it off them.
>>
>>2121308
>As diplomatically as possible: "What do you want it for?"
>>
>>2121319
This sounds good
>>
>>2121319
Just FYI, Alchemist's guild isn't somewhere that just anyone can pop up at and buy a ton of wildfire or something.
Some random Braavosi wouldn't probably get within 10 feet of the guild hall before being arrested for skulking around Crown assets.

Though the Crown utilizes the Guild of Alchemists a lot less than they used to, the guild almost exclusively deals through the Crown. They were kept under a tight leash during the Targaryen reign and now even tighter still during Robert's reign.
Ned Stark, Jon Arryn, Robert Baratheon and Jaime Lannister all are united in their distrust and dislike for that organization, which means that they're on thin ice.

Also, you don't know if the book you got even came from the guild in the first place. For all you know, the Alchemist's guild has forgotten how to produce Aqua Regia if they ever even knew about it, along with so much more that they've forgotten over the years.
>>
>>2121338
Fair point, but his request reminds me of when the faceless men ticked a maester to be to hand over a book from is keeping and then killed him. The more caution the better.
>>
>>2121343
Well, you don't know if he's a faceless man either if that's what you're insinuating.
No, you can't roll awareness for that. Yours is too low for that.
>>
>>2121349
Of course not, but a shady man wanting a secret way to melt gold is fairly suspect.
>>
>>2121307
>yellowy
Whoops, it was supposed to turn reddish, not yellowy.
>>
>>2121355
It's not melting gold. It's dissolving it.
There's a difference.
>>
>>2121399
Maybe he wants to sneak into a treasure house and dissolve all the gold, or some other fell deed.
>>
>>2121405
Or you know, throw some aqua regia at a dragon to see it dissolve.
>>
>>2121407
...would that work?
>>
>>2121449
I don't think so.
But a stronger acid might work, especially if we keep it in some glasses stored in the stomach of a dead goat for them to chomp into.
>>
>>2121453
At that point though we might as well make it an actual bomb or poison.

Anyhow, I'm for telling him how we did it since it shouldn't be too dangerous. I mean, seriously, it's only the ability to create a few acids and dissolve some noble metals. He clearly doesn't understand the alchemy behind it and if we are vague enough, merely explaining how to create the result rather than the method behind it, he shouldn't actually learn too much.

FUCK CAPATCHA
>>
>>2121457
Better to sell him just the acid, that way if he wants more he has to come to us.
Also we could buy back our handguns most likely.

>>
>>2121462
The proliferation of arms is no issue as already discussed. As to the acid, he seemingly wants the recipe as well as any of the substance.

FUCK CAPATCHA
>>
>>2121399
Is there any commercial application for dissolved gold in the 7 kingdoms?

And let's ask him what he wants it for
>>2121471
>>2121462
And I'm game for selling a few batches of it
>>
>>2121449
The Dragon probably would be reasonably pissed until all the acid had either vaporized or neutralized if you threw Aqua Regia at it.

Splash it on it's eyes and it's pretty likely you blinded the bugger.

In fact, Aqua Regia is a substance so nasty that amateurs with no experience working with Acids would likely blind themselves or otherwise fuck themselves up with the stuff due to the fumes.

You as a Metalworker had to have some experience with using acids for cleaning up your machinery from contaminated lubricants, so you knew how to take the necessary precautions.

Due to the danger and expertise required to create and handle the stuff, it's not far off to call it the King's Water as few others could afford to acquire it should they ever need it.
>>
>>2121482
If you are interested in the commercial application of acids, it's usually fairly simple.
Purification and refining of materials as well as chemical tests.
Iridium and Osmium are substances that are refined from platinum with Aqua Regia for example.

Indeed, with acids you could experiment to create steel alloy which by its very base properties would be far superior to the castle forged stuff as it largely need not even be forged.

This of course would require a laboratory.
>>
>>2121499
It would also require prior knowledge of those substances or at least a theory that they were potentially extractable. So it's doubtful that is his motivation...

Fuck it, let's give him it in return for either some more books, a ton of money or something.

>285 AC
Why the fuck does everyone initially think that you can just reverse engineer fucking everything?
If it was that simple, he could just swipe the fucking jar from you and bail.

Do you honestly think the methods of scientific testing are so advanced in a medieval setting which has generally speaking regressed in it's technological level that one could simply reverse engineer, well, anything?

Sure you'd probably be able to figure out the function of an item after a careful study and examination, but as to actually replicating it? How the fuck would they even go about doing that? Exactly who would even have such a skill set?

He pulls out a pamphlet from his pocket

[THE STARRY WISDOM LIBRARY]
[CATALOGUE OF THE GREATEST OCCULT BOOK AUCTION OF ALL TIME]

"This is an exclusive event for the chosen few. I have already spent more than I can afford in that place."
You go flip through the pamphlet and it lists a fair few shady looking titles, including volumes on necromancy and qohorian demonology and blood rituals.

"I could arrange a way for you to get into the auction. Rather unique opportunity wouldn't you say? Normally only members are allowed in, but you could use my invitation and go in my stead."

You think for a moment
"Why not just offer me some more of your books?"
He sighs
"Because I need the ones that I have for my work. I cannot sell them, but the auction offers more than I could."
"I doubt I am much better off in terms of gold than you."
He laughs
"I suppose you aren't, but Gold isn't the only thing one can bid."

Rather a strange and suspicious deal.
"Can you elaborate what do you even need it for?"
"I'd rather not if you don't mind. It is better not to ask such questions from fellow practicioners."

Well, it takes couple of weeks to take back to Gulltown, but if you are heading to both of the stops, let's see...

1 day to unload
1 day to load
about a week to make it to the first stop and back

2 days on another switch
about 10 days for themnext back and forth trip

2 days on final switch until heading to Gulltown

soo... approximately 40 days of work if you don't call it short and hit it to gulltown, which should give you a couple of months of leeway to make it to Braavos, which should be a couple of weeks as well to make it there.

Church of Starry Wisdom... Where have you heard that name before? Hmm...
Still, this is an opportunity to gain access to literature forbidden in most of Westeros and Braavos isn't that far away.

> Purchase the Invitation to the Braavosi Occult Book Auction

You look upon the cataloque. You probably cannot afford to buy many items on this list depending on how wealthy the members of this sect are.
"Hmm..."
"Just to clarify, when you say that you don't need to bid with gold, what do you mean."

As you state that, he starts to look a bit uncomfortable. His voice quiets to a whisper as he starts explaining.
"You bring the items to the high priests that you wish to pawn off. Gold, Books... Other things... Contracts and Favors sometimes as well can be traded for tokens."
"The tokens can only be used in the auction and will not be refunded."

Strange system.
"So... how exactly do I know that I won't get outbidded on everything and lose everything?"
"You do not. All you know is the starting bid."

You look at him with a bit of suspicion.
"Fine, you got my curiosity. I'll accept the trade."
"Excellent. Wonderful."
He relaxes as you say those words.
"Then, the recipe and the substance?"

You procure the completely sealed jar where you poured the substance.
"You'll have to drill through the clay to get it out at this point. Didn't want to take any chances with the humors."
He grabs the jar with a grin.
"Then the recipe?"
"It's just Strong Water and Spirit of Salts mixed together in a ratio of 1 to 3."
"and how did you make those?"
"Don't you know? The book you gave to me explained how to make those."
He looks at you skeptically and annoyed.
"That is not true. I have gone through that volume several times. It only skims the beginning of the Art of Blackening, but it only has but a single ritual of putrefication contained within which allows one to begin the practice of alchemy upon reaching the state of whiteness."
He must be referring to that weird recipe for 'Facing one's Shadows'

"Whatever, I'll just write down how I did it. You figure the rest of it out."
You grab a few pieces of parchment and use the desk in your room to write the step by step instruction on creation of the Aqua Regia.

Once you are done, you hand it over to Stallonos.
"This is it."
He immediately begins on skimming through it.
"Yes and what of the ritual?"
"You can wear silly wizard hats and robes while you do it I guess. What do I care?"
He looks at you mildly annoyed
"Look, it's the same deal as with the guns. It just works. Don't question it."
He looks at you, wondering whether or not to believe you. He pockets the recipe nevertheless.
"You will find the instructions as well as the items necessary for entering the solstice auction in your ship tomorrow morning."

He leaves the room and you are left to wonder what sort of meaning did he draw from the book.

Will continue on writing later.

I'm telling you; Mr. Bean clansmen.

Come morn, you and the rest of the Captains made haste to set sail to not waste sunlight. Hopping in your ship, you checked your belongings. Someone had placed under the boards of your dedicated spot and without the realization of the crew no less a bag.

Inside the bag you found an eerie looking mask, a pitch black robe, some sort of necklace, a ritual knife and a ring. There also was a notebook containing a series of replies you apparently needed to know by heart before entering the auction.
You all the items into a strongbox. It's probably best if nobody sees that you have these things.
This is a lot less innocent than a mere alchemy book.

>Awareness – Success
>Myrish Lenses – Distance

Your convoy spent some fairly uneventful days of sailing through the valley towards the first checkpoint. Your drudgery was broken as you spotted some sleepy clansmen in the distance on your routine scanning of the perimeter with your Myrish Lenses. You also spotted the scheme which the clansmen seem to employ in order to take over the enemy ships.

Apparently, some of them had neglected to properly cover up their ships, thus revealing their hand. They had at least a couple of ships what you could tell hoisted up the hill on both sides of the river, ready to be ridden down the hill on any passing ships, taking them from the sides.

Whilst your convoy was moving on, you ordered your men to prepare for battle and signaled the rest of the fleet to do the same. Weapons were loaded and everyone was ready to fight.
As your fleet moved onwards, you suffered a rather unfortunate turn of events. You noticed that the dark clouds hanging from the sky had started to rain.
Rain + Gunpowder = Very little boom boom

The Clansmen had blocked the river with their stolen ships.

'He who relies on magic is fighting with a glass sword. That's how the saying goes doesn't it?
So, what to do in this scenario.
Enemy is in the front, blocking the river and the only way forwards is through them.
There's Clansmen on the hills ready to Vinland Saga their way down to the river with multiple ships.

It's fight or flight
>Retreat. Leave the Convoy to fend for themselves.

Get a sheet of iron, a plate cuirass or something similar, under a tarp of some sort. Heat the iron until it was unpleasantly hot to the touch but not absolutely scorching. Spread out wet powder on hit iron and let it dry.

Alternatively, since that's risky, quickly get the kegs of gunpowder under a tarp. Have the men scoop out the layer of wet material to get to the dry. Then very carefully reload any mucked up muskets. If we can keep the men sheltered they should still be able to fire.
>>
>>2125895
How many ships on the hills? What number of clansmen are we looking at?

>>2125907
Assuming we can get something like this working, I support it. At the very least we might be able to get a few volley-gun barrages into them before we're out of good powder.
>>
>>2125907
this, I mean there is no way that all of our powder is wet/that we can`t fire anything. We might be severely nerfed right now but we can still fight.
>>
>>2125907
You do not have any metal armor because you didn't buy any. Your plates and bowls are primarily wood as well.
Also, you don't have a kitchen in your longship, which means you don't really have any sort of firepit or something on your longship that you could use for that sort of thing anyway.

Main issue is really that when lock mechanisms are damp or wet, they keep misfiring most of the time as you aren't using percussion caps, but rather flintlocks.
Also, with the match cords getting damp, you're going to have problems igniting them or keeping them lit for the volley guns as well.

You didn't exactly make locks for the volley guns as they are a rushed production model.
>>
>>2125919
You don't know their exact numbers, but each ship on the river more or less matches your own crew in numbers.
You yourself only could spot two that were poorly covered up. There might be one or two more that you couldn't see.
You could tell however that they did try to make sure they weren't spotted.

You have no idea how many Clansmen are on the hills asides their scouts.
>>
>>2125926
So what you are saying is our guns are going to be firing infrequently and unpredictably if at all?

>>2125931
Okay so we're fucked in terms of numbers but if we're lucky the reason they're relying on stealth might be a lack of experience and gear. If we are lucky we can blitz a ship or two, secure a flank and hold the line long enough for them to decide to disengage or for us to fire off a volley from our guns.
>>
>>2125938
>So what you are saying is our guns are going to be firing infrequently and unpredictably if at all?
This is correct.
Basically, misfire bumps your unit's turn down the line a bit if they roll 4 or less.
They will attempt to carry out the order again if they have the time, but the enemy will take their turn carrying out their orders while your units misfire.

Any misfire orders that end up at the last of the turn list immediately mean that the order was a failure.

Essentially if you get 3x rolls to shoot your muskets and they all misfire and the enemy unit manages to finish taking all his turns, the turn ends and leaders can give out new orders.

Btw, you cannot exactly give orders to the other ships. You don't have radios.
>>
>>2125895
>How long has it been raining?
>Is the powder already wet, or merely in danger of becoming so?
>Why Do our troops not yet know the importance of keeping thier powder dry?

>>2125907
This.
>>
>>2125963
>>2125926

If you wanted a cuirass, you should have bought one senpai.
If you wanted a kitchen, you should have bought a ship with room for one.

Generally speaking, people do not eat warm food in ships if they can help it.
Lot of sailors eat even their fish raw most of the time because firewood takes a lot of space from a ship when you're cooking to many people with any sort of regularity.
>>
>>2125986
Sorry, I should have been clearer; I ment we should try and dig some dry powder out of the middle of the barrels.
>>
>>2125961
And the likelihood of a misfire is what again? Also how many turns should it take for their hill ships to board us and where are we in the convoy? I presume the second to last ship but I want to check.

Also is capatcha being a bitch for anyone else?
>>
>>2126000
I take it you really wouldn't want to take perfectly good powder from the barrel where it's nice and dry and then mix it around so it gets nice and damp like the outside environment?

The problem isn't the powder getting damp right now, it's the fact that the guns are wet, damp and really not designed to handle it.
Most of your powder is perfectly fine and dry inside their little powder horns. You purposely built them with the purpose of protecting the powder inside from outside elements after all.

It's when it comes out of the horn when the problems arise.
>>
2/3 times when you try to fire, the shots will misfire.
>>
>>2126020
I take it would be in no way easy to solve this issue with guns until after the battle? Even temporarily? Hell one good volley is all we need at close range to even the field...

>>2126023
Well shit. Based off of how accurate our crew are and the fact we don't have our volley gun's for the most part, this battle is probably going to get our crew slaughtered if we aren't careful.
>>
>>2126033
Not really, no.
Usual doctrine when regarding the rain during the Napoleonic wars was that you simply didn't engage the enemy when it was raining if at all possible.

If you had to, you'd preferably shoot from somewhere that shields you from the rain so you only had to deal with the dampness, rather than the wetness. You on the other hand, have an open topped vessel.

Longships suck senpai.
>>
>>2126073
Just a question, with all of our earnings from this trip, assuming we survive all the way, could we get a proper ship without bankrupting ourselves?
>>
>>2126095
You could have gotten one from your first job as well, though it depends on what you meant by proper ship.

You even had enough money that you could have shipped low value goods independently at untraveled routes thanks to the compass and keep making a reasonable profit thanks to your high cunning.

There really was absolutely no reason for you to pick this job. It really was the worst one of the lot of all the options you could have picked.
>>
>>2126124
Eh, I think the reason we took this was it seemed interesting. More so than what you are suggesting.

Still, once we're clear of this job we can look into getting the sort of vessel we could've gotten after our first job and doing that probably while we read a bunch of books and shit.
>>
The Bigger ship had been safer and made more money per trip and been better protected.

Independent work would have been riskier economically, but safer as you'd be unlikely to face pirates in open seas.

Joining a respectable Captain's fleet would not have gotten you as much coin, but would have gotten you safer journey and experience.

Making a large scale distillery operation for the Lord would have been time consuming, but it would have gotten you plenty of money, a friend from a well respected house and fair bit of status.

The Criminal work would also have had higher pay and lower risk than this.

Mercenary work would have been more or less similar risk, but higher status and potentially better pay.
>>
Oh, and if you really wanted to max out on he cash, you'd have haggled with the Guildmaster at the start.
He was asking you to do a shady job and you agreed to do it for a lot less than you could have.

Lord Harlaw would also have given you way more for that Razor than it was worth and pretend he was fooled with the agenda to push you to become friends with greenlanders and visibly wealthier for it.

>Ramming speed
You have chosen wisely

Annoyed by this turn of events you made a decision.
It's all or nothing.
"Ramming speed. We're going to break through and shoot whomever tries to board before they make it to our ship with full force."
"Captain, are you sure that is-"
"MAN YOUR POSITION SAILOR WE'RE PUSHING THROUGH!"
"Protracted battle is not in our favour in this rain. Our guns and powder will keep getting more and more wet. We need to deal maximum impact with our first shots!"
"IT'S ALL OR NOTHING! WE STAY AND WE GET BOXED IN! WE BREAK THROUGH, WE WILL WIN!"

At this point Devran joins in.
"You heard him lads. The Captain wants to hit them with his axe. Get us closer."

There's chuckles all around.
"LET'S WARM OURSELVES UP WITH THE FIRES OF WAR! UNTO BATTLE!"

>Athletics DC 9: 9 – Push the enemy ship to to widen a gap for the fleet to exploit - Success

The ships are now side by side, one of the musket squads manages to put in some more bullets into the smoke.
>Marksmanship: 11
Somehow despite the smoke, they somehow managed to inflict some damage unto the mountain men that were attempting to board your ship. "THAT'S ENOUGH! They're recovering! Get us out of here."
>Warfare DC 15: 14 – Disengage – Failure
>Warfare DC 9: 14 - Switch target to your ship and begin boarding – Success

Was it the sounds of battle? The Concentration on trying to get the guns to fire? Perhaps they wanted to just put one shot in before retreating? Perhaps you gave the order too late? Whatever it was, you watched as the enemy began jumping over the side of your ship through the smoke and go at your men.
You felt yourself filled with anxiety. You were now dancing on the razor's edge.

>Agility 9 – Success – 3 enemy squads manage to board your ship.
>Fighting 13 – DC 6 + 5 due to attacking from smoke
>Athletics 3+2 Damage. Armor negates 3. Your men receive 2 damage, they are down to 4 hit points.

At this point it was pointless to give any more orders. Your men had to repel the invaders off the ship or you were done. It was time to take matters into your own hands. You push one of the newbies from the volley gun and took aim.

Work you piece of shit or we're all dead.

Your Crew has combat defense of 6.
Once someone goes over your combat defence by double, you get criticals depending on how by how much much you overwhelm their defenses.

Since they went over by 4, one of your squads suffers a wound.
>Crippling Wound: You cripple your opponent with a dreadful
wound. In addition to the damage dealt, your target gains 1
wound. This injury does not reduce damage. If your opponent
cannot take another wound, he dies.

"Some attacks are so brutal and so deadly that the only way to overcome them is by accepting a wound. A wound removes all damage taken from a single hit in exchange for taking -1D on all tests. If number of wounds taken equals your Endurance rank, you die."

You make rush past the men to the next unfired volley gun as rain and blood drips down on the deck.
"Come on, once more. I just need one more good shot to turn this around. Just one more hit and we'll outnumber. Them two to one. SHOOT! SHOOT YOU GODDAMN PIECE OF SHIT!"

Whilst you were struggling with the volley gun, the mountain clans started to overwhelm your men. If only it wasn't fucking raining. If only it wasn't the fucking rain, these savages would be reduced to a fucking pile of corpses.

Damages
6+2 (Squad 2 Routed and badly wounded)
7+2 (Squad 3 Routed )
10+2 (Vale Auxilaries Routed)

Most of your men are jumping ship and trying to swim to the shore. You are left but a ten or so loyal men standing by your side as the mountain men approach you with a rapey looking grin.

You are now outnumbered. The remainder of your men are also thinking of fleeing.
The battle is lost. However, there still one thing you can do. One last act of spite. They may have beaten, but the rest of the fleet has broken through... and still have the powder barrel at hand.

>I'll be damned if I'll let a bunch of mountain savages take my ship, my money, my grimoires and my fucking guns. We will all go down in a blaze of fucking glory.
>Fuck it. We've lost I'll swim ashore and try to make it back to civilization.
>Maybe they would accept surrender?
>>
You guys picked a smart choice in trying to break through as it minimized the amount of dice the enemy would get as you'd be both taking an enemy by surprise and only facing one foe.

Had you had support from another captain, you'd have won with this tactic, but you got Melvin the Craven.
Had you had good weather, you'd have won with this tactic, but you got rain.
Had the devastation perk of the Volley Guns actually activated, you'd have won with this tactic.
Had the crew rolled good in fighting, you'd have won with this tactic.
Had there been less misfires, you'd have won with this tactic.
Had that last Volley Gun shot actually landed, you'd probably had won as you'd have outnumbered the enemy 2 to 1.

Alas, the dice gods did not will it so.

>>
>>2130644
They broke through already through the hole you created. They aren't there to kill mountain men, but to ship goos.

Sark is about to bail soon from his boarding action with covering archer fire from his partner.

Big problem is that if you let the clansmen get your ship, they will use it. They will torture information from any captives and they will use your guns for their own ends till they run out of powder.
>>
Also, there's no telling you can even make it to the shore. They might just shoot you in the back with their bows, throw some spears or axes at you or you might get torn apart by wild animals.

Also I'll be honest and say we should probably not go into the north for our next re-spawn. The Reach seems like it could work out well.
>>

>Reach
Good place to flex agri tech and pick up a ship.
>>
>>2130756
Reach, it's the wealthiest and most populace. That, to me, says there's a chance we might be able to spark a little bit of industrialization.

Two copies of you cannot exist in the same timeline, sorry.

You're going to have more than enough problems dealing with the return of the magic into the world as well as the coming zombie apocalypse even without having to dodge sniper rounds.

I sort of made a decision that I wanted to have this quest focus more on the world of Ice and Fire than people from this world.

I do sort of want to deviate this from the Velo Quest.

ANY AND ALL VOTES RELATING TO THE FINAL DECISION MUST BE REPLIES TO THIS POST OR BE DISREGARDED

The North
Most abundant in resources, but also the least developed of the Seven Kingdoms. It has a low population density, it's menfolk are rowdy and they still hold to the Old Gods with some exceptions.

The Grasp the Starks hold over the North is lax, as the territories are vast and people are often left to their own devices. As long as the honor of House Stark is not insulted, the Lords can largely do as they please as their liege lord and his men are rare sight indeed.
This of course comes with the downside that old blood feuds run strong and conflicts between houses tend to often run their course before their liege lord even hears of it if neither side has his ear.

Like Stormlands, personal honor runs strong here, though in the north it's more of a commitment to not be fucked with.

The Reach
Save the Capital, the most technologically advanced region in Westeros and it's breadbasket, producing much of the foodstuffs, but more importantly, it's also one of the major population centers of Westeros with a strong knightly tradition. Knightly honor and pageantry is taken very seriously in here.

Where the Vale Knights are more serious and devout in their Andal tradition of knighthood, the Reachmen romanticize it more, praising the ideals of knighthood, whilst focusing less on it's religious aspects.

Stormlands
The most martial place in the Seven Kingdoms to the point that not a single city charter has ever been signed on this region. There is only one rule in this region and that is of the uncontested rule of the Lords and as such, frequent displays of martial skill and personal honor are deep seated in this region.

This strict adherence to only having feudal vassals in the realm has lead to some problems as the inefficiency has sort of stagnated almost all economical growth in the region, as the industries remain more or less the same over the years.

Only way to raise one's status in Stormlanders seems to be through merit in battle, which makes them often quarrelsome warhawks by nature, seeking out fights for even mere perceived insults.

Screw industrialisation until we're either a land-owner or major merchant.

Let's see if we can't get a proper mercenary force together and all that good shit. Fact is the more we learn and level up in these lives, the better. So let's do some high risk lives and get good at fighting, designing and all the other shit we need to get far in this Game of thrones. If we can become a masterful swordsman or merchant or gambler or blacksmith in one life, we'll keep those skills in the next. If we can learn another language, spoken or written, we can still use it in the next. Anything we do and practice sufficiently is essentially a permanent boost to all of our future lives. If anything this means we should drop into the north and train ourselves up there for a few lives. Essentially this but with shit like academic knowledge, fighting skills and anything else we want:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VF5P7qLaEQ

The God-emperor of Mankind had more than 30,000 years to become the brilliant being he was and to consider everything. I think we can get the important shit nailed down in half a dozen lives, max.

>>2130817
I say the Reach for now but we should still consider the other options, for the reason I have outlined above.

Industrialization is only a good idea if you have the connections to make use of the massive production output.

Much of the knowledge and skills you desire are reserved for those quite high in society. Prestige, Wealth and connections are a must to acquire some of this knowledge and only under special circumstances would I ever reincarnate you into a major house.
>>
>>2130817
I vote for new game. It doesn't matter to me where
>>
Imma say north, less fuckery from the lords
>>
>>2130931
I know I don't intend for us to be reincarnated into a major house. I expect to gain whatever money and such we need by arm, by wit or by chance.

Anyhow I know much of the knowledge I desire is guarded and expensive but we managed to secure some in this run. Given we are only going to get smarter and more insightful as our lives pass, who knows what will become of us beyond a greater and greater pool of knowledge to draw on.

Main point is this, although getting killed is a set back, it is also an opportunity to dedicate our next life to merely getting more skilled rather than actually trying to do everything in one life, we learn and train in another so that our next run after that is far better prepared or even the same run depending on how lucky we get.

So I suppose what I am saying is, we shouldn't treat dying like it's the end but rather like it's an opportunity to reflect on what we did wrong and what we need to do right next time. Along with starting slightly more prepared and ready for whatever we decide to do.
>>
>>2131013
It's not less fuckery, just well, different sort of fuckery. Imagine like Imperial Russian style administration with Starks as the Tsars of North.

Every region has their own particular brand of fuckery they use to get ahead in life.

Westerlands possibly is most meritocratic, as Lannisters frequently put psychopaths in charge if they achieve results, but there are no friends in there.

Reach cares most about appearances and public opinion. Popularity and fame are some of the key parts of the doctrine by which reachmen play their game.

Dorne is very much trying to trick your enemies into fighting unnecessary battles to weaken them.

North is much about forming strong alliances with marriages between houses to become just straight out powerful enough to do what you want.

Stormlands is more interpersonal. It has a very strong feudal culture and it's much about impressing one's lord with military achievements, earning glory over one's rivals.

Riverlands is a place where the liege is weak and lords are ambitious. Often times, the Tullys are just as much pawns as they are players.

Vale is a lot more boring overall. It's brand of dickery is quite bland as it's rulers are relatively stable, not counting mountain clans raids and it's largely murders over succession.

Everyone more or less hates everyone in the Islands, but they can't straight out kill eachother so they mostly just do things to spite the other houses.

Dickwaving is important everywhere.
>>
Oh, and Crownlands play to the tune of the capital, this doesn't always mean the king.
>>
>>2131020
Rest assured, you'll pick some skills on each run.

Whether it be something simple as playing an instrument or learning social skills in forms of persuasion.

This time around you ended up learning to run your own business and do some relatively basic chemistry.

WTF is going on? Did we die?
>>
>>2131187
Basically we're in a situation where everything is FUBAR unless we want to spend the next three months getting back to where we were.

Alternatively, we die and respawn as a new person with all of our new knowledge and shit ignoring physical stat improvements and anything we had not memorised well. So only the stuff for the bravossi dark magic thing which we lost our only way of getting to anyhow.
>>
>>2131208
Plus we still know that Braavos has a market for eldritch lore.
>>
>>2131224
To be specific, you know that the Church of Starry Wisdom funds it's operations with a secret auction in which it peddles to its members occult items during one of the biannual Masked Solstice Balls of Braavos.

You also know that they're shady as fuck considering all the dark magic shit they put into that catalog and the mask and robes that gave you very much a secret cultish vibe when you first inspected them.

persevere
>>
>>2131208
Well then lets "Persevere" None of that pussy load and save crap.
>>
>>2131426
So you want to persevere after being told we've lost our ship, our crew, our guns, our books, our money and are currently significantly in-debt to the guild we were doing a mission for? Under the assumption we can not only make the checks, which OP mentioned would kill us if we fail, to swim ashore but also can actually manage to resurrect some sort of success from this character?
>>
>>2131466
You want to rage quit because it got to hard? There's an X on your tab you can use.

We can reincarnate when we die.
>>
>>2131466
It's not that there isn't a way to survive through this, but it's going to require good rolls as well as you figuring out a way to make you untouchable to your debtors.

Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot of ways to pull that off.
I can only think of like 3, maybe 4. Unlikely that you'd ever sail again.
>>
1. Find a rural Lord which you can impress that's willing to hide you in his castle.

2. Join a religious community, like the one in Quiet Isle. This will mean that you'll be working for the faith and only the faith, but whether or not you'll rise anywhere, that's a whole other story as your persuasion ranks aren't that high.

3. You try and join a criminal gang. They probably would be the one doing the collecting anyhow. Big problem with this would be that you'd most likely be making guns for them.

4. You go to a Castle and announce that you wish to join the Night's Watch. They'll get you to a recruiter and you'll never hold any lands or titles.

This is assuming you survive the trip.
>>
>>2131600
What if we agree to help overthrow the king with that knight guy if he helps us with our debt?
>>
>>2131600
I say let's flee to the Quiet Isle and spend a thread making it dank as fuck.

I like that idea. We did pretty good in our brief foray into accounting so should have a decent time. Always accounting to be done.
>>
>>2131614
You have no idea where he is. He left around the same time as you did.

>>2131628
You need to figure out a way to secure a passage to that specific place as you have no money and no ship.
>>
>>2131560
Hell no. I just see no reason to pointlessly make yet more obstacles and slow down our progress because you think it's "rage quitting" or "cheating" or whatever.

>>2131600
These are the only ways we get out of this apparently and would you look at that: literally none of them are as productive as a decent fresh start.

1 sees us in hiding and lacking the ability to do much of anything. 2 sees us probably do fuck all for the next few sessions minimum and even if we did get a decent position, we aren't gonna be in control: the community or order will be. 3 sees us become the toady of a criminal gang. 4 is literally waiting to die from white-walkers or free-folk.

>>2131659
That is yet another problem.
>>
>>2131600
Personally, I like option 1 here. I enjoy the mental image of our protagonist playing mad scientist in some rural lord's dungeon.

Obviously we have to escape our current predicament, but I say we give it a go!

So you'd be born 2 years into the past, into the year 278, a year after the Defiance of Duskendale.

Robert's Rebellion happens at 282-283.
This means you'll be 14 by the time shit starts happening, which means you are technically speaking old enough to fight in the war, though it's stretching it.
>>
>>2133275
ehh, I plan on supporting our alcohol empire's development.

Are we going to start as a similar powered minor lord's child?
>>
>>2133277
More or less.
Not quite as low powered as House Baelish holding only a tower and a handful of peasant families in his lands, but still quite minor.

Your dad has a castle though, albeit that it's just a modest stone keep without any external walls built to it.
Like so many reach houses, yours too primarily makes it's money through agriculture.

Cattle, Cash Crops being primary export, though the farming peasantry do like to pay their taxes with food rather than coin, which also lends that towards exporting as well at times, most often after it's been fermented.

Your household is wealthier than the one you were last reincarnated in, but their expenses are also higher as more is expected of them. Prestige is also much, much, MUCH more important in this region than anywhere else.
>>
>>2133314
So what you are saying is that we have more subjects under us? Good, that works in our favour if we decide to go the gunpowder route to power again, given how easily we can train them and how we just want sheer numbers.

Second, how close are we to our father both personally and in terms of succession?

Third, do we have any sorts of library or scholar in our father's castle we could study under in our free-time?
>>
Rolled 3 (1d4)

>So what you are saying is that we have more subjects under us?
Your father has subjects. You? Not so much.

>Second, how close are we to our father both personally and in terms of succession?
As to books... Your father does have a Maester under his service who has a shelf almost full of books relating to his work, not quite a library, but your house does have a study of sorts.
Many of those books are borrowed from the Citadel, so they're not really property of your family.

Naturally, Maesters are a tad expensive. They're after all supposed to be both confidants and consults, which means they do expect a certain degree of funding to ensure their loyalty.

>Second, how close are we to our father both personally and in terms of succession?

Excellent. We can read the shit out of those and learn from him as much as possible.

>Many of those books are borrowed from the Citadel, so they're not really property of your family.
So long as we get to read them. Plus it means we might be able to get other books over time...assuming we can convince the Maester to send in such a request.

>Naturally, Maesters are a tad expensive. They're after all supposed to be both confidants and consults, which means they do expect a certain degree of funding to ensure their loyalty.
True.

>>2133360
>2nd in the line of succession.
So we're not the heir but the spare?

That's good. Important enough to receive a good education and all that lovely stuff yet not the immediate target for any rivals of our father's or any such problems. Plus if we're lucky our older brother will go and get himself killed.
>>
>>2133408
Hypothetically speaking yes.
Practically speaking...
You'd need to first build up a faction that's willing to back you in this, because without supporters, you'll just end up being a figurehead at best while the guys with the soldiers take over your lands.

There's also the fact that if you get known for kinslaying, you're going to have a bad time. Nobody will associate with you, which means that you'll get put on a trade embargo if you're lucky.
Big deal with Reach politics is popularity.

If you're unpopular with the people and with the nobility in the Reach, that's just a big sign saying "Please take away my lands and assets from me. I am defenseless."
Layers of pretense in reach are so thick you can cut through them with a knife.
>>
>>2133408
Not necessary. Remember; Robert's rebellion starts when we are 14 (just on the cusp of being old enough to fight in the war), meaning our older brother will deffo be old enough to fight.

If he carks it in the war, we're next in line and can comfortably wait for old father time to do our dirty work for us regarding dear ol' dad.

On a tangentially related note; if our family makes it's living from agriculture we might be well disposed to direct our research towards the chemistry of fertilisers, and perhaps labour-saving farm devices such as threshing machines.

>Operation 72 Virgins: Go

You decide, fuck it grab the ashbucket and pour it's contents to the powder barrel. It could blow at any moment now. The moment one of the embers hits powder, this barrel is going kaboom.

You stare down the savages as they approach you and narrow your eyes.
The rain is falling around you.
"Last chance you illiterate fucks. Get off my ship or die."
The Clansmen laugh as they approach you.
"Our Valley. Our ship. Our cargo."
Your eyes open and your face turns into a mad grin.
"Wrong. My barrel. My cargo. My fucking ship."

You kicked the barrel over thus mixing it's contents, the embers kept for lighting match cords and lanterns within the ashes tumble and turn along with the the powder, igniting them with devastating effect.
You did not feel anything as the flash and wood shrapnel engulfed you.

After the detonation, there was no sound.
Just a high pitched whining after the thump that you heard from hitting the deck and muffled screams of the savages.
The Colours are drifting away from your eyes and you no longer feel the rain on your skin. You see out of the corner of your eye as the men which survived the blast are rushing to abandon the ship in the wake of the ginormous hole you tore into the vessel.

There was no winner in this battle.
Their Wounded will be like die to the last man from the wounds they suffered from gunshot. They received no bounty to claim as the ship began to sank into the lake. The goods you were shipping would be spoiled by the river when they managed to finally get their grubby hands on it.
You made sure that they paid dearly for a fat load of nothing.

Like the Flames of Valyria, their prize would be snuffed out of existence and the blood price paid for the effort would never be returned to them.

Lying on the deck your life beginst to flash before your eyes. No memories from your original life, just the bad memories from this one.
"-I hope you'll at least die a Captain."
Fuuuuck youuuu toooo

It's getting cold. The surface of the water has already covered one of your eyes.
You think to rest for a moment, just to relax your eyes for a bit.

As you do, it doesn't feel so cold anymore. Just dark and warm.
You breathe in the water as you sink into the depths.
>>
>>2133509
You nudge awake from your slumber. You don't know how long you've slept, but you feel alive again. Your hands, your limbs still barely responding to your commands. After a moment of weakly searching around in the dark with your hands, you feel that you're surrounded by warm and somewhat soft walls.

Panic strikes.
The walls begin closing in and squeeze you forcefully.
You are too weak to resist, your limbs are not yet that strong from the injuries you suffered. The walls inched you through the fleshy caverns and after harrowing hours, you finally see the light. You feel the cold air upon your skin as sounds of woman screaming could be heard in the background. You try to swear, but only weak cries come out.

As you slowly became accustomed to the temperature change, you started to calm from your panicked state. Breathing was uncomfortable, like your lungs weren't used to it. Your first thought that you had came too close to drowning and damaged your lungs somehow.

Still, you no longer were drowning. You were alive, still alive. Again, alive. You were placed upon your mother's breast as she looked at you with tears of relief in her eyes, her face still red with exertion. Though you do not know this woman, just for a moment, you felt at peace resting upon her warm busom.

"Congratulations Lady , it's a boy."

It is the year 278
You have been reincarnated once more.
This time to a House in the Reach. Once again war will be looming over your teenage years for when you reach 14 years of age, Lords of North, Vale, Riverlands and Stormlands will rise in bloody revolt against King Aerys.

House Tallon began with a Knight eleveated posthumously with great ceremony after he fought side by side with one the scions of House Tyrell, defending him on a trial by seven long ago against an unjust Lord's vicious champions.

All seemed lost as his comrades were defeated in battle by the vile false knights. Outnumbered and alone, rather than to yield and save his life, he carried on diligently through the trial to the death, slaying the remainder of the three warriors standing against him.
He would later fall to his wounds however.
The story became so romanticised in the Reach courts as the champions were notoriously unpopular, having slain more than a few popular knights that after that trial, House Tyrell proceeded to further enoble the Knight by granting him a petty lordship posthumously to inspire the other knights of the Reach to equal acts of fidelity bravery.
His son would proceed to inherit the lands of his father and continue the knightly tradition of self-sacrifice and bravery to this day.

The Colours of House Tallon remind the house of Ser Tallon's deeds for all eternity.
Black for grief of losing such a great man and Green for holding on to the hope of victory to the end.
Falcon symbolizing his inspiring legacy.

The Vassalage of House Tallon would later be granted to House Tarly of Horn hill for their filial service and as such they remain to this day. Lesser than most Lords in wealth and status, but more than mere landed knights in status.

You are born as a second son into this family

Your house is but a minor one, situated in the borderlands between the realms of Horned Hill and Highgarden.
Though rural and small in size, it has access to a river and the Rose Road.
The humble keep in which your family resides in is called The Knight's Refuge. It stands atop a hill from where it oversees the smallfolk within working within the demense.

There are no riches of minerals in this land and extra timber is frequently purchased by neighbours when the patch cultivated forest fails to produce enough.
The peasantry in the land do not exactly specialize in any particular sort of crop. The farms the smallfolk tend to often alternate between what sort of crop each house grows periodically in order to avoid competing with prices at any given time and thus avoiding disputes between neighbours.

For coin the lands of your household primarily sell flax and other cash crops along with excess food that is collected in form of taxes and often converted into beers and other beverages before selling it onwards.

Famous Knights earn more money than your shitty longship does, just FYI.

Landed Knights are the sort that often can afford to build a castle if they score well in tourneys.

>>2133595
That's fine. Fact is that we can get good employment with the fighting / command skills he'll get us trained in and what experience we've developed for alchemy and such will always be waiting for us when we're in a position to take advantage of them.

It's not necessary for you to be stuck with sword and shield.
Sword and Shield merely is a popular choice due to the fact that they are sort of iconic knightly weapons alongside with the lance.
Chivalry is after all largely about the art of Heavy Cavalry.

Ranged Weapons largely aren't considered Chivalrous, but at the same time adhering to the ideal of a true knight has nothing to do with one's choice of weaponry.
Of course, people tend to look strangely on a knight who can't joust.

Well, you didn't lose your soul. Yet.
There's actually a couple of ways to kill you permanently in this world that do happen to exist, but none that do so without magical shenanigans.

I still didnt consent to just suicuding ourself. Fuck this salt runs deep. I need a permenant fucking tab just with your quest open.

Musket Knight is entirely possible.
You could compete in marksmanship contests with your exotic weapon.
Of course, it'd either have to be freestyle tournament or a crossbow contest.

Even if you didn't win, it'd certainly be unusual enough that people would talk about it and people would want to go hunting with you.

Granted, you'd probably want to invest a lot of money into creating a sort of masterwork weapon. Possibly with an adjustable scope.

I do intend to make a new thread as you begin your new life.
Also, you'll be starting out relatively young as well.

One thing you guys should know that I'm going to Rome next week, so I'll be unlikely to update much from the 13th day to the 19th unless I can write them up quick.

I have replaced the necessity for railroading with sufficiently high political difficulty.
I am one of those people who believe that the dark ages were not devoid of progress because pf Christianity despite what people want to claim.

The problem and indeed much of the progress which mankind saw during the dark ages was not so much technological, but more administrative, organizational and legal.

Some of the Greatest Advances in the art and science of statecraft that humanity witnessed happened during the dark ages.

In this world, you got to deal with the fact that you live in a period where nation-states themselves are a relatively new concept which were only born through the aid of Magic it should be pointed out.

TLDR: Politics in this age are cutthroat as fuck
