Girl Fight!

Character info pastebin in progress: http://pastebin.com/iB0tb7rz
Dice odds for best of 3: http://pastebin.com/994WTT3g

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roselia)
Dice (Croconaw)
Sorbet (Vulpix)

Location: A small field outside the Grass Temple on Tabo Island

It’s not the way you usually think, but you can sort of understand. Laki wants Jane to respect her. To see her as something more than Laki sees herself in her weaker moments. This is how she thinks she can do it. You don’t know, but you know it’s important to her.

“If you think you should face Jane now, then I think it’s a good idea too.” You tell Laki.

She offers an uncharacteristically soft, appreciative smile. “Alright. Let’s go to the healing machine.”

“There’s a pokemon center healing machine here?” You don’t remember seeing that.

“Yeah. It’s out of the way and not fully up yet, but it can handle small loads. Part of the whole modernization initiative they were talking about.”

Judging from Laki’s tone, she seems to have mixed feelings about it. You can understand. It’s convenient, helpful, and nice to have around, but at the same time it does sort of feel weird inside of a temple. Of course, the modern look feels weird too. You wonder if they’ll change it in the future now that the course of it’s politics have changed.

“Why didn’t you ask me to heal them?” You say as you, Hana, and Abigail catch up with her. She’s walking at a brisk, determined pace.

“Well, don’t take any offence, but you look tired after. I think you should cut back on it. Save it for emergencies or something.”

“Aww, she’s worried about you.” Abigail interjects

Laki, instead of being bothered by being emotionally exposed, just keeps her face forward. “Of course I am. It’s my duty to take care of my man. I thought you were into traditional gender roles.”

Abigail’s the one thrown off this time. “Well, y-yeah. But different ones.”

Laki is too focused to listen. She marches on.

The pokemon healing machine isn’t even manned at first, but you find someone. It’s still not entirely set up, and the room it’s in is just storage. Still, it works, and quickly. After that, you follow Laki to where you know Jane is, your freshly healed pokemon in tow.

Jane, sitting with Keira, shoots up in alert.

“Herb!” She says. She looks more confused than anything. “Come to battle? Talk?”

“You wish.” Laki says, stepping forward. “Your next battle is with me.”

Jane sighs. “I’m trying to work on my peacefulness. Don’t antagonize me, Laki. You’ll just get humiliated again.

Laki’s face is hard to see thanks to the sun in your eyes.

>”You’re in for a surprise, Jane!”
>”Maybe she’s right Laki. Let’s all just try to get along”
>Listen to the voice of Dad in your head and stay way out of it

“Laki and I just finished battling, and if I were you I’d take her seriously. She’s been training, and you’re in for a surprise.”

Jane stops for a second. She looks you over, trying to read you. You guess she’s not sure if you’re just sticking up for Laki’s pride or if you really mean it. There's a shift in her stance, like she's got her guard up again.

Laki says nothing, and the sun still blocks her face. She’s still, like a statue.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?” Jane asks.

“Three pokemon each.” She says.

Jane looks angered by this. “You want to get whipped so badly? Fine!” She looks around, gathering her things up so there’s a clear battle spot.

Keira sits there, looking deep in thought. She eventually forces herself to move out of the way. “Oh, right. I guess I should referee.”

“Priestess Keira.” Jane bows. The sudden formality seems to throw Keira off. “Are you sure? You look tired.”

Keira yawns. “When there’s mediating to be done, it’s a priestesses duty to...you know what? I am tired.” She stretches. “Just...you two try to get along, okay?” She waves disinterestedly and crawls up into a nearby tree to lay on a wide branch.

“Now who’s going to ref?” Abigial says. “I’ve already been on my journey and the kids in my neighborhood ask me to handle stuff sometimes, so I guess I can, but uh, Laki, don’t get mad if I call you out.”

“I could do it.” Hana says.

“What about you?” Jane points to you.

“You’d trust Herb?” Hana almost trips.

“I’m still not entirely decided, but this would be a good test.” She says. “Besides, Laki could use the handicap.”

Again, Laki says nothing.

>You’ll do it

They are pretty good, the story is better than the originals, they have new pokemon distribution across all island and most importantly they have Mantine surfing.

“I’m not the right person for the job.” You say, motioning to Abigail. She did volunteer first.

“That’s what I get for opening my big mouth.” She jokes. “Now I can’t make any jokes until after. Professional neutrality is the worst garbage ever.”

“And you’re alright with this?” Jane asks Laki tauntingly.

Laki again says nothing. She just nods, and throws out her first pokemon, Meowth.

Jane is speechless. The implication is clear. Throwing out your pokemon first instead of at the same time is a sign that you consider the other person as a below you as a battler. Not in a dismissive way necessarily, but you know how Jane can take things sometimes.

“You... you!” She grinds her teeth. But a second later, she laughs. “You don’t think I’ll fall for petty provocations, do you? If you do, that’s the real insult!” She’s really fired up. “Well, answer me! Say something!”

Laki says a few words in Loanan that you don’t understand. You look to Hana, and she shrugs. Whatever they are, they change Jane’s posture. She stands aggressively.

“No bet?”

Laki shakes her head.

“Then let’s begin.” Jane says, reaching for a pokemon.”

“You’re baiting me to use Hitmonlee.” Jane announces. “If not for Herb’s warning, I’d knowingly take the bait, too. But I think you’ve got a trick. Not that it’d matter, but I don’t want to give you the satisfaction of thinking you can make me do anything. Not you.” Jane throws out a pokeball. “Go Fletchinder!”

The firey bird pokemon comes out and makes an imposing figure, despite it’s small size. It’s clearly in top physical condition.

“BEGIN!” Abigail says, as if she just remembered.

“Fake Out!” Laki says.

“Me First.” Jane smirks.

Despite Meowth’s incredible speed in using the move, Flechinder goes even faster, catching the cat off guard and delivering a quick but hard blow.

“Some grand brilliant battle plan so far.” Jane taunts, keeping her eyes firmly on Laki for signs of reaction. “Hey! Are you listening to me? I told you that your silent treatment wouldn’t work!”

Laki still says nothing, but she retrieves Meowth. Something about that seems odd to you, but you’re as distracted by Laki’s silence as Jane is.

“There you guys are.” Valerie comes running from inside the building. “Oh no. Jane and Laki are battling again? Why can’t Jane just stop.”

“It’s not like that.” Hana explains, filling Valerie in on the details as Meowth uses U-Turn

When she’s done, Valerie is distraught. “Oh. Why didn’t anyone stop her? I hate to see Laki’s pokemon hurt.”

“Don’t you think she at least has a chance?” Hana asks.

Valerie looks down, playing with her hair. “It’s not that I think poorly of Laki... Herb, what do you think? Be honest.”

Sometimes you're just compelled by a manly compulsion to lay it all on the line. The only way to lose if she gets scared and backs down.

There's a difference between her usual attitude and this attitude. This one isn't about being hot-headed or a braggart or any of that kind of shit. These are steely emotions, and that makes this a lot more important.
>>
“Laki’s good” You tell you. “I think I missed something.”

“What was it?” Hana asks.

“I don’t know. But I just need to concentrate. Laki’s doing something.”

Hana and Valerie stop talking and look over the field. There’s nothing on there out of place. What did Laki do?

Laki’s next pokemon is Wailord. Jane uses Sunny day before it even appears.

“There’s more to battling than type advantages.” Jane says. She’s still watching Laki and her pokemon closely. She’s still taking her taking though, being careful. Cautious. “What’s your plan? Hmm?”

Laki still ignores her. Well, not entirely. She smirks.

And that’s when you see it! Flechinder’s got something under it’s wing! Pointy and irritating. Some sort of barb that’s stuck to it. It’s wearing it down! You force yourself not to point it out.

“Substitute and Double Team then Swords Dance.” Jane tells her pokemon. “Keep your distance. She’s got some silly plan and we’re not falling for it.”

But Laki isn’t making a move. She has her Wailord use Amnesia instead. As Jane stays back, so does Laki. And this just bothers Jane so much. It goes on for awhile, until finally, Jane snaps. “Fine! Fletchinder! Quick Attack! In and out, fast!”

The attack hits and hurts Wailord, but while it’s strong, Wailord is able to take it.

“Bounce!” Laki says. Her pokemon flies up into the air much faster than it’s size implies.

“That’s our plan? Use your size instead of water?” Jane asks, sounding almost disappointed. “Your pokemon deserve better. Fletchinder, use Double Team again. She’ll never hit you at this rate.”

Fletchinder incredibly fast now, and details of it’s movements hard to spot. It’s no surprise that the move misses. Wailord slams into the soft ground, making a wide crater.

“Enough of this farce.” Jane says. “Fletchinder, you can’t be hit any more, but you can hit her. Acrobatics until it falls!”

Fletchinder is about to take off and execute the move, but it falters.

“What?”

The poor pokemon has almost nothing left! Everyone’s been watching Wailord and Laki and didn’t see that Sticky Barb that’s on it.

“Whirlpool!” Laki says.

“Fletchinder!” Jane looks at her pokemon in concern, then suddenly retrieving it. It barely had any energy left, but Abigail waves an arm, indicating that it’s still in play for when she decides to throw it back.

The whirlpool centers on the crater, creating a big brown swirl.

“It was your Meowth, wasn’t it?” Jane asks. “You...you got me to stall.”

Laki lets herself show a little smirk.

“You called it, Herb!” Valerie says, putting a hand on your shoulder. “That was brilliant!”

Keira looks up a little from her nap. This got too interesting for her to ignore, it seems. But besides that, you have been a little worried about her.

I just finished rereading the first quest a couple days ago.
Also you used the "This is the first time you've seen Robin lose" bit twice. I demand compound booty interest.
>>
Jane sends out Dewpider, who is able to more easily navigate around the Whirlpool. This looks exciting!

But you turn to Keira despite the urge to not miss a moment. “Hey.”

“Hey.” She says, not as despondent as you expected.

“Want to come down and watch with us?”

“Woah!” Hana says in excitement. You cringe. You’re missing it!

“I don’t know.” Keira says. “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking.”

“What about?”

“The clergy, my place in it. Who I am. Who we all are.” She says. “I don’t know. Nothing seems the same any more. But it’s not that anything really changed, I just see things differently and I can’t go back.” She says, swinging her legs over the branch.

You offer a shoulder to help her down. “That sounds tough.”

She shrugs and rides on your shoulder. You were just trying to help her down, but you guess she’s watching from up there now. Her feet gently kick into your midsection.

You catch a bit of the battle. Wailord is hurt, but managed to score some good hits on its opponent. Jane is starting to take this seriously now, but her usual tactics aren’t working. Still, she’s good, and she’s adapting.

“Is it possible to still believe in my religion, but reject my temple? Keira asks absently.

>Whatever she believes in, she can always believe in her friends

“Some mainlander religions do it where they don’t have one unifying body and they seem to be doing okay.”

She kicks a little as she thinks. “What about the people in them? If there’s less unity, that means there’s more reliance on the individuals to figure it out. And people, well, people aren’t that good at it.” She says, unusually bitter sounding.

“I think...well, it’s complicated.” You begin. “I think people screw up, do mean things, get greedy. No one is perfect. But that doesn’t mean they can’t try. People are always flawed. Even the people we admire. And that can hurt, but it's still okay to respect and admire people for the good parts of them.”

She leans her hands on your head. “You’re a good man, Herb.”

Oh gosh.

“Come on. Watch the battle. It’ll do you good to forget about that stuff for awhile and take your mind off of things.”

Dewpider and Wailord come to a crashing stop, with Wailord on top.

“It’s not over yet for Dewpider.” Jane says. “Suck it dry with Leech Life!”

Wailord cries out as the pokemon it’s smothering drains it’s health. There’s no longer any strategy, but a battle of wills. At least, until Laki cries out for another Rollout. Dewpider gets rolled on hard as Wailord stays in place for a few seconds. It catches traction after a second and takes off, coming around the big muddy whirlpool at a high speed. Dewpider gets ready to take it on.

“That Rollout is going to be too powerful!” Keira says, getting into it. “What’s she going to do?”

“Bite!” Jane yells out at the last second.

There’s a quick movement from the bug as it bites into the rolling Wailord. It flinches and comes to a stop. With that, Dewpider latches on with Leech Life again, draining it out.

“Wailord is out of the battle!” Abigail declares.

Laki flinches, then returns it. She sends out Meowth again, and this time there’s nothing to stop Fake Out, followed by Fury Swipes and Quick Attack in rapid succession. The poor spider is overwhelmed and exhausted, and doesn’t last long against the sudden and savage onslaught. You can see now that it was holding back it’s speed when it was the first pokemon out, lulling Jane into a false sense of tempo.

“You’re pushing it, Laki.” Jane warns.

Laki still says nothing.

“Pretty awesome fight.” Hana says, snuggling into your side and putting your arm over her shoulder.

“Yeah.” You reply.

“Everyone’s eyes are on it.” She whispers, putting your hand on her chest.

>Hana! Laki is having a serious battle!

Hm. Meowth hasn't taken too much damage, just a fake-out. Jane will either have to lock in her third pokemon, giving Laki the choice of matchup, or send out Fletchinder. If Meowth can take out Fletchinder (and it might. Fletchinder low and Meowth has quick attack) Laki will still have the choice of matchup. Unfortunately, if Jane picks hitmonlee Laki doesn't have Wailord for that soak trick. And while Nidoqueen is weak to ice, I doubt Bergmite is really in the same weight class.

“Hana!” You whisper. “I’m appreciate it, but now’s not a good time.” You say, then lean into her ear. “Later, okay?”

Hana looks ashamed, and not in the way she enjoys. You didn’t think you were being that harsh, but when you glance over to the field you see Abigail looking at the both of you.

You turn your attention back to the field, but you let your hand slip into hers. You see her perk up out of the corner of your eye. Her hand rests there for a moment, then she strokes your finger a little suggestively. But only for a moment.

“I could crush you, you know.” Jane says to Laki. “If I used my full strength. So however this goes, don’t get cocky.”

Laki keeps eye contact, saying nothing.

Jane continues. “But it wouldn’t be fair. That pokemon isn’t here right now. I’d have to summon it. Five minutes is too long for the switch out time in a battle.”

Laki thinks for a moment. “Do it. I’ll wait.”

“You don’t want this.” Jane warns. Despite the fact that Laki is finally talking, she doesn’t look relieved. “It’s not fair.”

“There’s no point in beating you if you’re not at your best. Do it.”

“Now hold on!” Abigail says. “I’m the ref here, and I enforce the rules. You guys agreed, implicitly, to a standard three pokemon battle. There aren’t breaks like that in those.”

“Who cares?” Laki says. “I consent. Do it.”

“I care! As a ref for this battle, I follow the letter of the rules. I have an obligation and a duty, and how the parties involved feel doesn’t matter. It’s in the guide book for refferees, you know.”

“What do you guys think?” Laki asks the others.

“Rules aren’t as important as people say.” Keira says, still sitting on your shoulder. “...I want to see it. Do it!”

They look to Valerie. “Oh, me?” Valerie plays with her hair. “I don’t know. It doesn’t seem fair to spring some pokemon like this.”

“Yeah.” Hana says. “It’s not fair to Laki, even if she asks for it.”

Everyone turns to you. It looks like Hana, Valerie, and Abigail are against it, while Jane, Laki, and Keira are for it.

I'm saying that in that case, she doesn't need to make exceptions for Jane like she's trying to do either.
>>
>>2118066
If she truly had the ability to summon Sharpebro, God of the Tubular, the earth would truly have been a better place for it.
>>
>>2118052

I like this one. Try going at a gym and saying "Oh if I brought this Pokemon it wouldn't be a contest!" Gym leader wouldn't care. It's on Jane for not bringing her a game. Don't make excuses just because things aren't going your way. Jane would be bragging if she was winning.

From what I see, everyone is making pretty much the same point.

I'm curious if Gobble will write Herb taking as strong a stance on this as anons are. I wouldn't call it out of character, but still unusual and interesting.
>>
>>2118112
Gobble takes the intent of votes in as long as that intent is communicated. Since we’ve communicated the intent, Herb probably will explain it similar to how we did.

“It’s not fair to pause the battle for that.” You say. “Talking about what if’s makes you sound like you’re reaching for an excuse Jane. I never made an excuse when you beat me. You agreed to battle with what you had and now you’re asking for five minutes? It doesn’t work that way. You wouldn’t say this for a gym, right?”

Valerie takes a step away from you, as if worried you'll be shot at. Keira also removes herself from your shoulders. You expect a complete freakout, but it doesn’t materialize.

“Fine.” Jane says calmly, although her glare at you could melt steel.. “It doesn’t matter either way. I just wanted to offer you something more. But I have full faith in all of my pokemon.” She throws out her last pokemon, Hitmonlee.

Laki shifts back to looking determined. She also shoots you a little glare. Uh oh. That is definitely coming up later. You hope she's not that mad, but more importantly, you didn't hurt her feelings.

The battle kicks off again. Hitmonlee uses Fake Out as it’s opening move. It’s not a strong move, but the physical difference in power between the two pokemon becomes very clear in that instant. Once Meowth recovers, it scrambles back into the calming pool that was created from Whirlpool. It throws out Payday as a ranged option as Hitmonlee advances. The handful of change is caught in mid-flight by Hitmonlee and dropped into the water at it’s feet.

“Careful.” Jane tells her pokemon. “She’s been tricky. Take this seriously.”

Laki’s posture shifts in reaction to that.

“Mind Reader, just in case.” Jane commands, then looks up at Laki. “It’s a smart idea, using this pool to slow their speed and give Hitmonlee a handicap for kicks. I'll give you that.”

“So Jane noticed it too.” You mutter. Valerie and Hana both look at you, surprised. You guess they didn’t see it.

Sorbet, who is usually disinterested in most things, is watching the field. Her facial expression shows curiousness and wonder. Like she’s never seen something like this. She’s battled before, but you guess even with then she’s still more used to wild battles. There’s not much strategy in those, from your experience. Wild pokemon lash out more than use smart moves or pace themselves like a trainer battle.

Sorbet quickly looks up to you, as if asking for something. Maybe she wants your input on the battle. This seems like it could be a good teaching moment for her. Whatever lesson you offer now will stick, but only if you keep it focused and simple

>There’s always a way to use the terrain to your advantage

“Look closely” You tell Sorbet. “There’s always a way to use the terrain to your advantage”

Sorbet nods, and looks back to the field. You sense that she’s really absorbing this. She’ll definitely keep it in mind the next time she battles.

The harsh sunlight fades, reflecting the look of the poor, cornered Meowth.

Jane snaps her fingers, and Hitmonlee’s legs spring up so it stands tall. “The shallow puddle of water won’t help.” Jane says. “I thought you earned a better fight from me, but a few cheap tricks and lucky shots don’t make a true battler. Power is important to train, too. I thought you’d know that more than anyone.”

“You’re right.” Laki says. “Let’s show them some power, Meowth. Use it. Thunder!”

Jane flinches for a second in sync with Hitmonlee, but she quickly gathers herself “It’s a bluff! They’re both in the water! I’m not falling for it. She’s trying to get us to back off and buy time for something.” But her confidence fades as a small cloud forms.

“What’s Hitmonlee standing on?” Laki asks.

“The coins!”

Crackow! A mighty bolt of lightning strikes down at Hitmonlee. It’s a powerful, focused critical hit! The powerful muscles of the pokemon twitch and shake as electricity rips through it.

Hana’s hand squeezes yours so tight that you almost fall over. She apologizes profusely after, helping you straight out.

“Amazing!” Valerie says.

“Right? Her aura is strong!” Keira is looking right and Laki. “So bright today.”

Hitmonlee stands in complete shock for a moment, like the only thing holding it up is that it’s legs forgot to collapse. It seems as if Meowth could blow on it to push it over. But after a moment, alertness and anger explodes in its eyes.

Meowth tries to leap back, but the strong foot finds it’s mark and the small pokemon is nearly broken in half. It’s clearly knocked out well before it lands.

“Meowth is unable to battle.” Abigail remembers to say after a few seconds of looking at the limp cat Pokemon.

Hitmonlee breaths heavily. It’s just barely hanging on. That Thunder really hurt. You think pride more than muscle power keeps it up.

Laki wordlessly sends out Bergmite. The little ice pokemon dog paddles in the new little pond, being just a little too short to stand in it and keep it’s face above the waterline.

“But ice is weak to Fighting! And Fire!” Valerie says. “What’s she doing?”

That does worry you a bit, but Laki’s been pulling off plan after plan in this battle. What worries you more is the look on Jane’s face. Panic and anger. You fear she might do something reckless, or take something too far. She seemed like she almost wanted Hitmonlee to follow up with another attack on Meowth. “What trick is this?” Jane asks. “Is it another insult? I offered you my full power and you’re using your least-trained pokemon that’s weak to Hitmonlee and Fletchinder? Where’s Chatot?”

Laki doesn’t answer. That just makes Jane angrier.

“I’m sick of everyone toying with me!”

You want to say something, but you’re too gripped from the battle. You decide to avoid interfering.

“Hail and duck!” Laki commands, not acknowledging the exchange.

Duck? But why? But as you see Bergmite fold itself in as best as it can with it’s tiny limbs, you think you understand. It’s hard to land a solid hit on an ice cube floating in the water.

“Reversal! No mercy!” Jane declares. “It doesn’t matter what you try here. You’re getting

It’s a horrifically brutal attack. Your eyes can’t even follow exactly what happens for a moment with how much speed and power it has. A huge wave of water is kicked up. You flinch, almost certain that the poor ice pokemon is already out.

But Bergmite is able to withstand it. At least for now. Hitmonlee staggers under the heavy hail. But summoning strength from somewhere, still forces itself to stand.

“Sturdy? Just delaying. If Hitmonlee doesn’t finish you, Fletchinder’s speed will!”

“You talk too much.” Laki retorts.

Jane grinds her teeth, fuming. “Finish it!”

“Protect!” Laki counters.

Hitmonlee’s attack bounces off the protection bubble, throwing Hitmonlee off balance. It keeps it’s legs planted firmly in place and wiggles back to an upright position with some difficulty under the hail.

“Why didn’t she use Protect first?” Keira asks.

“She’s stalling again.” Hana says. “Protect is hard to maintain, so she has to space out the uses. But she knew if Bergmite could take one hit, she could lengthen the time he’s out there in the hail.”

“No more games! Feint! Hurry!”

Rather than use Feint, Hitmonlee falls to it’s knees, and then right over.

“Hitmonlee! Get up!” Jane asks of her pokemon. The poor thing struggles. It’s legs splash in the water as it stumbles back and forth to push itself and stay up.

“Powder Snow!” Laki commands. Bergmite uses the move on the water at Hitmonlee’s feet. The fighting pokemon’s feet get stuck and it can’t move.

“Don’t give in!” Jane asks of her pokemon again.

Abigail has her hand up, teetering on the edge of saying that Hitmonlee is unable to battle.

“Just a little more!” Jane asks of her pokemon. It looks back at her, and inspired, forces itself to fight. “Be careful.”

Bergmite paddles away under Laki’s instructions while Hitmonlee marches. The icy water slows it down considerably. It’d look hilarious if the situation weren’t so tense, this low-speed chase.

But Hitmonlee just can’t go any farther. It falls, face first, into the icy, muddy water.

“Hitmonlee!” Jane yells. She quickly retrieves it, close to her, then releases it so she can hold it. “You pushed hard. You deserve a reward later. I promise.”

It faintly smiles, fading in and out of consciousness. She props it against her bag so it can sit up and watch the rest of the battle. “Go, Fletchinder!”

The weakened Flying Fire pokemon is released high into the air, flapping hard to stay steady under the onslaught of Hail. “It’s up to you now! Roost!

“Recover!” Laki commands. Both girls shoot glares at the other. This meddled with their expectations.

“Don’t give it another chance to recover.” Jane says “Ember! Fire as much as you can!”

Laki can’t hide her reaction. She flinches. She must have been hoping for a physical attack against Bergmite instead of a special one. It’s pelted with fire.

“Use the water for cover!” Laki yells. “Try to keep cool and wet, and counter Ice Ball!”

“It’s no use!” Jane announces. “Keep firing and Roost when you need to rest!”

The exchange goes on for a long time. Neither party lets up, for fear that they’ll be overwhelmed. At first it’s a tense slug match where the climax almost seems at hand before someone uses Recover or Roost, but in time it grows to be exhausting to watch. You can’t imagine how tired the pokemon are getting. Hail breaks a few times and has to be renewed, helping Fletchinder make tiny but important gains. By the end of it, the pond is nearly dried up, the sun in setting, and Fletchinder rests on the ground most of the time. The barb has traded hands probably a dozen times before finally being lost.

Keira has fallen asleep. You’re actually thankful for that, she had some heavy bags under her eyes that even her facepaint didn’t conceal. You and Valerie see on the ground, chit-chatting a little and trying to keep the pretense up of watching. Hana is the only one staying standing, and makes a joke about being lucky to have her legs.

“Why won’t you give in?” Jane demands. “You have nothing left! The pond is almost gone!”

“Why don’t you give in?” Laki demands right back. “The sun is setting. That’s less heat. It’ll make up for losing the pond.”

“Somebody please give up.” Abigail asks. “Or I’m calling a draw.”

“NO!” They both say in unison.

You’re losing patience, a little. You understand they want to give their best, but this doesn’t seem healthy. Maybe you just lack that competitive spirit that people like Jane like to talk about. You just can’t see the sense in this any more, though.

You’ve had enough of this. You’re a healer, aren’t you? At least, that’s the power you’ve been given. At first you’ve mostly ignored it, or have used it as a convenience, but the more you use and need it, the more it feels like a responsibility. You can’t just sit back and ignore Hitmonlee. There’s something bothering you about him.

“I’m not going to give up to you!” Jane screams.

“That’s my line!” Laki shoots back. “Not to you!”

“Why do you hate me?”

“What? I don’t hate you, Jane. I mean, sometimes I do, but not really.” Laki shakes her head. “Don’t turn this around on me. You’re the one who... I mean...”

You keep walking. Jane gives you a quick glance but doesn’t want to risk taking her eyes off of the field for even a second.

You ignore her and lean down to touch Hitmonlee. It jumps awake, startled.

“Shh, it’s okay.” You assure him. “Let me take a look.”

“What are you doing, John?”

Your look him over in the fading sunlight. Your hands go over his leg, feeling around. There’s a sudden jolt when you touch one spot. “He’s hurt. I think his leg twisted funny in the frozen water.”

“W-what?” Jane gives half her attention, then after a moment, her full attention. “I would have noticed that. We have a sign for when he’s in trouble.” There’s strong doubt in her voice

You breath in deeply, and funnel your energy into healing him. It seems harder right now. Like the air around you is bitter and harsh. It’s probably just your state of mind from the girls. “There, is that better?”

He relaxes, sinking into his little rut in the ground but looking comfortable in doing so for the first time today.

“What happened?” Jane isn’t looking at the battle any more. Fletchinder doesn’t seem to need much direction to repeat the same thing though. “Is he okay?”

He gives her an assuring look.

“You’re sure?”

He nods.

“Herb, I don’t know where you got this idea, but I don’t need you messing with my concentration. Yes, he was hurt from battling, but he’d tell me if it were serious.”

You look at Hitmonlee again. He doesn’t keep eye contact with you.

“He was hiding it.” You mutter in realization.

[That’s all for tonight, folks. Sorry about the slow pace. I’m not 100% sure if I’ll be running tomorrow. The hours of my new job are also not super predictable yet, but I’m optimistic about this week.

Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roselia)
Dice (Croconaw)
Sorbet (Vulpix)

“Hiding it?” Jane keeps glancing between the battle area and her pokemon. “How...why would you do that, Hitmonlee?”

He looks down, ashamed. As she gives a signal to her Fletchinder and turns her full attention to him, he looks back up with hard eyes and a grunt. Your reaction time in jumping back is slow. You’re tired.

“You’re not fine.” She says back to him.

He grunts again.

“You’re sure?”

He nods.

“Fine. But we’re having a serious talk about this later.” She says. “You too Herb.” She turns her attention back to the fight, but what she sees makes her twitch. The fight has taken an informal pause.

“Ready?” Laki yells. The hail died down and both pokemon are keeping a respectful distance, but haven’t let down their guard. Bergmite looks ready to start it up again the second it gets the signal.

“You...you stopped?” Jane yells back, a vein popping in her forehead. “You’re making a mockery of this fight!”

“I’m not the one doing that.” Laki shouts back, looking at you. “I want you at your full concentration and strength. No excuses.”

Jane makes a fist and keeps her eyes locked. “Why is she being so stubborn?” The question hangs in the air for a moment, unsure if it was rhetorical or not.

Hitmonlee grunts again.

Jane gives another half-glance back. “It’s too risky. I won’t push Fletchinder that far.”

Fletchinder, seeming to have heard that, reacts with some showy and violent flapping. It seems inspired by Hitmonlee’s example.

Jane sighs as Fletchinder starts going high up into the air without her giving an order, breaking the pattern of slugging it out it’s had with Bergmite. “Herb, get everyone father back. Be quick about it.”

You quickly rush close enough to the others so they can hear you, and tell them to clear back. It takes them a second to wake up and pay attention again, but they quickly do as you ask. Laki reacts defensively when she sees this.

You run back to Jane. “What are you doing? Go with them!”

You shake your head, making it clear you’re here to stay. “This better not be reckless. I only have so much gas in the tank.”

She gives you a funny look. A mix between frustration, dismissal, and, if you’re not imagining things, understanding. “You’re always holding back more than you let on.” That sounded almost like praise. You’re touched for a moment. The softness of her face vanishes though, and the mad woman bent on victory emerges again. “FLETCHINDER! COMBUSTION CRASH!”

You’ve never heard of that move before.

“Get ready.” Laki sweats, looking up at the bird that’s almost out of view.

Fletchinder flaps it’s wings, and for a few moments there’s nothing but waiting. But then you see it coming in. Razor Wind! But why? You assumed she was using some sort of Fire move. It looks normal.

Then you see Fletchinder coming down like a rocket, right behind the Razor Wind.

“PROTECT!” Laki shouts. Bergmite quickly summons another protective bubble. And the timing is good, too. Razor Wind lands right on it. And behind it is Fletchinder, covered in flames. It crashes hard into the protect as well, spiraling off the round bubble and out of control.

“YES! Good work, Bergmite!”

A thin line of flame from behind follows in the path of the Razor Wind, making a loud whooshing noise and sucking up air and loose grass and dirt in it’s path. It crashes into Bergmite a second later. The Ice pokemon is caught entirely off guard and lifted off the ground from the force, despite the slightly downward angle it hit at. The heat wave hits you a moment later, despite Jane stepping in front of you.

“BERGMITE!” Laki shouts

The small ice pokemon is out. But being cautious, Abigial takes a minute to make the call. She also has some ground to clear to get closer and to check the fallen bird pokemon. But to everyone’s surprise, it hops to it’s feet. You’re not sure if it can fly, but it makes a show of moving as fast as it can on the ground in little hops. It’s not much, but up.

Abigail brushes a bit of flaming grass that fell onto her shoulder. “I’m calling a tie.”

“WHAT?” Jane stops walking towards her pokemon.

“He can’t fly under his own power. The rules on making this call are about if it could continue fighting under normal circumstances. A freshly hatched Caterpie would still put your pokemon in danger.”

Hearing this, Fletchinder uses Quick Attack, flying through the air quickly and up into the sky.

“See?” Jane says. “He can fight.”

Abigail inhales, and nods. She agrees. “Fletchinder wins.”

The second her arm comes down, Jane goes from standing still to a hard sprint. She catches her pokemon, who apparently isn't able to land safely. Abigail sees this, but concedes that she already made the call and she can't know if it fainted during or after it. Jane cuddles her pokemon closely as Laki does the same for her pokemon.

Rather than a prideful show from Jane or angry contesting from Laki, both of them seem to have an air of shame around them.

You move to heal Fletchinder, but Jane stops you. She uses medicine instead. “He’s not seriously injured, and I’ve seen enough pushing limits today.” She says.

“Fletchinder’s alright?” Abigail says. “Then why are you so mopey? You won your stupid fight.”

Jane holds her pokemon. “I didn’t think he could handle it. I thought he might hurt himself, and told myself it was okay since we have our grand and blessed healer here.” She sarcastically motions to you. “ I didn’t want Fletchinder to think ‘what if’ after losing, but what if I was wrong like with Hitmonlee?.” She’s surprisingly honest. “Why did I let that quitter push me so far?”

Laki doesn’t say anything in response, but that clearly got to her.

“Well, you both fought really hard.” You say, hoping to lighten the mood a little. “I can’t judge beyond that. I think it’s clear you both think a lot of each other deep down, right?”

You think that comment helped defuse some of the guilt or bad feelings in the air, but they don’t seem to totally buy into it.

They look at each other. It’s only now that you notice Laki has something in her hand on a lanyard with the athletic games symbol.

“That quitter? I don’t want her as a fan.” Her words echo the ones from her story about when she was Laki’s biggest fan. Laki looks like an arrow just went through her heart.

“She’s not a quitter.” You say quietly but firmly.

“She quit after the games.”

Abigail, surprisingly, keeps herself quiet and backs up.

Laki holds back any words for a second. She marches up to Jane. You expect a punch to be thrown, but instead, she offers Jane what’s in her hand.

“You’re right. I never took it that seriously. It was a way for me to get easy prestige, and when I saw how much everyone else wanted it and how much they wanted it, and how I was representing Loanah, I choked. I let you and everyone who supported me down. You deserve this more than I ever did. It fits you more.”

Jane holds it up. It’s a participation medal. It’s not very fancy, and it looks pretty neglected, but what really catches your eye is the slogan. “Spirit. Representation. Effort.”

Jane doesn’t have any words. Is...is that a tear in her eye?

Laki breaks the silence and rubs her eyes. “Damned ash in the air.”

“Y-yeah.” Jane waves at it, then brings her hand back to wipe away some more moisture around her eye.

“Doesn’t seem that bad to me.” Abigail says.

They both glare at her. You flinch, thinking the worst is about to happen. But they both share a sort of funny look at the realization that they did the exact same motion.

“Redheads, right?”

“Even more annoying than blondes.” Jane shoots back.

They both laugh. Laki puts an arm around you. “Yeah. He’ll get a good punishing for getting involved.”

Heh. She’s just joking around, right?”

They laugh a little longer, but then when it breaks, things become awkward again.

“I won’t push like this in our next battle.” Jane says.

“Next battle?”

“You’re not going to quit, are you? You’ve got a medal to earn back.” She says, tossing the medal up and grabbing it out of the air. “Beat me and you can have it back.”

Laki’s confused for a moment, but excitedly pumps her fist. “You’re on!”

“Dibs on not reffing again.” Abigail says.

Jane ignores her and sniffs. She sounds stuffed up. “The ash is really getting to me. I’m going to find a sink to wash my face.” She starts heading away.

“Wait! There’s a stream over there!” You shout out to Jane.

She doesn’t seem to hear you, despite how loud you shouted.

“Jane! Jane! Did you hear me? I said there’s a stream over there!”

She finally looks back, annoyed. Her eyes are really water and there’s snot coming out of her nose. She begrudgingly goes towards the stream.

“Wow, golden-top. You’re an even bigger dick than me.” Abigail says, putting her arm around your shoulder. “I’m so proud.”

Laki picks her up like a young Meowth, but gently sets her down beside you instead of tossing the small redhead.

“I’m not that annoying of a blonde, am I?” You ask, realizing you just exposed Jane.

Laki puts her arm back around you and starts walking you back. The others come in and follow. “Not to me.”

“So, you won’t punish me, right?” You ask. You wonder if she’d be in a much worse mood if your little interjection or your vote on the other pokemon had resulted in a different outcome.

Laki just grins down at you. You gulp.

The rest of the night is much more quiet. Pokemon are healed in the nearby machine after Keira manages to get the door opened for you. The mood is nice. Everyone’s tired, but nobody is upset. Laki especially seems like she’s had a big weight lifted off her shoulders.

You wake up the next morning feeling drained from Laki’s “punishment.” Laki’s up, polishing Bergmite. Hana is in the other room with Valerie, Keira, and Abigail. The door is open and they invite you in.

“I guess it’s time to get going.” Valerie says. “Umm, unless you’d like a ride after your gym battle.”

“Oh. I wouldn’t want to impose.” You say back.

“No no. No problem at all.” She says.

“What, is it some crummy dingy or something?” Abigail asks.

“Well, it was pretty small compared to the other boats at the harbor at the mainland.”

That yacht of hers is small? Was it parked next to freighters?

“A ride would be nice, but we might still be awhile.”

“I don’t mind!” She almost jumps at it. “It’ll be awhile since my next contest, so it’s not a problem.”

“Well, okay. Great!” You say. “Thanks.”

“How many girls do you have chasing your degeneracy?” Abigail kicks up her feet. “Yeesh.”

“What? Herb’s just my friend!” Valerie objects.

“I’m game if you ever want to change that.” Laki says, sipping her morning tea and flattening out her tank top. You can't tell from her tone if she's kidding or not.

“Awww, she’s turning red.” Abigial says, enjoying having a new target to bug.

“Matches your hair.” Laki jokes. It's a nice, friendly joke without any edge to it. She must really be in a good mood today.

After breakfast, a light morning workout with Laki, and cleaning and packing up, you’re ready to take off. You’re told the grass gym is about a half day’s walk from here. You should be able to get there hours before it closes before sundown, unless you run into anything time consuming. It’s in-land so a boat won’t help speed it up.

“Great! Let’s get going!” You say, hitching up your bag. “Everyone ready?”

“Yup!” Laki takes up hers. She’s got a lot of your stuff mixed in there. You guess that’s okay. She’s taking it on herself to do the heavy lifting, though.

Everyone else gives the affirmative too. Even Abigail. It’s not a firm commitment to travel with your group since it’s not that far away, but it’s a good sign.

“I am without a bag.” Gardevoir says, looking at the group.

“Here.” Abigail picks up Mace with a grunt. He’s heavier than she expected. She hands him over to Gardevoir. “You can carry this.”

It’s a joke, but Gardevoir takes it literally. Mace isn’t sure what to do and just eventually resigns himself to being carried. You suppose if he’s not raising any objections you’ll let it be.

“You don’t have a bag either.” Hana tells Abigail, taking the initiative to place Gobble on her back like a backpack. Abigail almost falls over. Gobble is having fun though.

“Hana!” Keira laughs.

“I can be cheeky too.” Hana weakly defends herself, going back into her shell as she does.

Before you leave, Laki takes a few minutes to see Jane off. You don’t hear what they talk about, but the body language doesn’t seem that hostile. Laki returns, saying Jane will come by the gym later.

You walk for awhile, enjoying the nice weather and pleasant company. Valerie is chatting up a storm with everyone, like she’s been holding it back and can’t stop letting it out now that the dam is broken. Dice and Sorbet get a little playful as they walk along the path. Gobble sniffs out some food, but surprisingly, doesn’t find it up to his standards and leaves it be. At least, for a moment. He goes back and eats it after a moment.

You think. “What’s after this?” You ask Hana.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, where are we going next? Laki, I’d love to meet your parents sometime soon. And Hana, didn’t you mention that someone who helped you with your arm was on the islands? It sounded like they knew you well.”

Hana gives a nervous look. Laki seems to like the idea of bringing you home, but she hesitates a little too.

“I keep saying it, Soft Hands. You're the man and the leader. You say where we go. But fair warning, my parents can be a bit intense.”

“Mine too.” Hana says.

Everyone gives her a look.

“What? It was a joke.” She shrinks from the attention. “Umm, too dark?” Hana looks around, as if searching for a way to get rid of the awkwardness. "Don't blame me. I just bought the joke from a comedy writer. Cost me an arm and a leg."

"HA!" Abigail is the only one who laughs.

She giggles. “Sorry! Sorry. But you do look great. Enough to make the case for me to try wearing makeup after all.” She takes out her pokedex and sits on the bed. “Well, if Hana’s um, foster family?” You visually confirm if that’s a good term to use, “if they’re in the area, I think it makes sense to visit with them. That is, if it’s okay with you, Hana.”

Hana throws up her hands. “Oh! Yeah. I mean, I guess there’s no good reason why it wouldn’t be.” She looks around. “Just, uh, please don’t make a big deal about it when you meet them.” She says to the others.

“What do you mean?” Laki asks. “Are they famous or something?”

“Well. Yeah. You’ll recognize them when you see them.” She says.

You feel a bit silly, since you didn’t recognize them before. They seemed like nice people. You’d really like to meet them properly. You wonder if they’ll act any different after learning about your relationship.

“Famous foster parents? Lucky!” Abigail says.

“Big shadows.” Valerie says to herself. You sense a strong understanding of Hana’s feelings from her.

You arrive at a fork in the road. Abigail walks out in front of everyone. “Guess you off-islanders don’t know my home too well.” She says, goading Laki to roll her eyes. “No worries! You decide to just head straight there. No time to waste! You guess part of you is still psyched from your battle with Laki yesterday.

You glance over to Keira. She’s looking a lot better today. There’s still something different about her general demeanor, but it’s less pronounced. It’s like a little part of her innocence is gone. She’s just a little more skeptical of the things in front of her.

You arrive at the gym without incident. You’re amazed. It’s a series of huge trees grown into the side of a cliff, right by a waterfall! You didn’t expect to see another waterfall like on Eelilee, but you guess they really like them here. You can see why! It’s like right out of a fantasy movie!

“That must have taken generations to grow.” Hana says.

“Yup!” Keira watches it for a moment, and inhales the smell deeply. “Each generation of caretaker inherited a duty and purpose.”

You go to the entrance, over a surprisingly large grown tree bridge.

“Ho!” A man stops you. “Challengers? And...oh.” He bows to Keira. “Priestess.” She bows back on reflex. The guard continues. “What have you brought?”

“Brought?” Keira asks.

“Yes. What do you offer in exchange for challenging our gym?”

“Like, a donation?” Valerie says, reaching for a checkbook.

“Not in that sense.” He has a slight edge of disgust from her gesture. He reels it back though, after seeing her face. You don’t think he meant anything by it. It was reflex. “I’m surprised you don’t know, young priestess. The leader here asks that any who challenge take it seriously enough and show their understanding of Grass.”

“I don’t understand.” Hana says. “What does that mean? What sort of offering do you want?”

He doesn’t answer.

“Oh I get it!” Abigail ungracefully pushes forward. “It’s a test, right? You’re going to judge us based on what we offer. The reason for the offer is more important than the

“You figured that out just from that?” Laki asks, impressed.

“Nah. I’m just messing with you guys. I already knew. I live on this island, remember?”

“Why didn’t you warn us about this?” Laki demands.

Abigail shrugs.

“Um, so we should offer something the temple might want?”

He gives her a warm but firm look. “Yes. You’ll be asked to explain why you’re making that offering.”

Laki thinks for a moment. “Fertilizer!”

“Ew!” Abigail recoils.

“Nightsoil is of little use...” the guard tries to discourage it.

“No! Not from me!” Laki says. “I’ve heard the dung of certain pokemon makes fantastic fertilizer for some weaker plants.” She thinks. “Is that okay?” I can see what I can find.”

He nods. “That’s a very thoughtful idea. Yes. Just, please be sanitary about it.”

Keira thinks. “I can offer blessings of the Ghost Temple.”

“It would be welcome. But as impertinent as it is, I must ask, why make that offer?”

“I...don’t have anything else to offer.” Keira says, suddenly struck with the train of thought. “That's all I know...”

She wanders to the back before you can say anything.

“You, young man. Do you have something to offer? Feel free to think about it.”

“How about a nice, well cooked meal?” You ask.

“Ah. Not many offers for that. May I ask why you’re offering such a thing? Please, in detail, explain your reasoning.”

Well, there are lots of reasons, you suppose. One, is that it’s something everybody needs. It’s universal. Not likely to be rejected or unwanted. Another is that it’s something you’re good at, if you’re allowing yourself to brag a little. Yet another reason is that you assumed, you guess correctly, that it’s not thought of that often.

You reach out and touch the small scratch on his arm while you think, healing it. He reacts in astonishment, unable to find words. But you’re too lost in thought on your reason to really notice.

The main reason you chose it is...

>It’s universally needed. A safe offering, unlikely to go to waste

[I'm afraid that's the last update for the night. I'll try to run sometime during the week if I can. If not, I'll have some bins finally done. I appreciate everyone's patience with my less frequent sessions since I got my new job. Things are stabilizing.]

(Herb, unironically, while performing a miracle: “I’d say my best skill is cooking.”)

Thanks for running gobble

>It’s unique. A niche that’s not often explored, and maybe something new to them
I feel like we could easily just list every single reason, but that sort of cheapens it for me.

Goodnighty.

[Thanks for coming!]

[Awesome! Saved!]

[Yeah. It'll be a singular one for exactly that reason]

>Herb shrugs. "I'm a giver."
>Cue Laki giving him a devilish look while Hana whispers that he most certainly is.

Oh hey, be sure to add the Tabo shard to Herb’s inventory.

Man, kid sure does collect those fast, huh?
>>

When people ask us how we got our Tabo shard, what are we going to say?

If they know it was a girl who found out the plot in the grass temple, they'll either think we're lying or know we cross-dressed.

You know, the Togepi reminds me, I'd really like to see some more of the rest of the gang's relationships with their pokemon. Jane's relationship with Hitmonlee is really interesting, Gardevoir is going to be a blast to have in the party, Keira's pokemon just saw her go through that slump and probably helped her through it, Bergmite's a little champion, and I don't think we've really gotten much characterization for Glaceon at all.

[Good to know!]

[Very! Herb is racking up some major reputation to people that pay attention to these things. With attention comes a lot of things, good and bad. He might just become a minor local celebtrity if things keep going the way they're going.]
>>
I don't know what having our Tookoo recorded means, but I want it.
>>
“Call me old fashioned but I like a little romance in my orgies.” -Herb, probably.

Make sure to archive this Gobble.
