The struggle for hegemony over the orient reaches its final crescendo as the Tengar Khaganate marches into Osaka, capital of Zipang, laying waste to everything that crosses their path.

Within this cyclone of hell, three young conscripts put their escape plan into motion. With a vehicle supplies secured, they now face the challenge of putting up a good enough disguise for the guards stationed at the checkpoints.

Cont'd from previous thread

We’ll be counting on you then, Satoru.” For some reason, I feel as if my friend has suddenly assumed the role of a tour guide of sorts. Not that I am complaining, the man known as Satoru Aono has always been a reliable person regardless of the situations we find ourselves into, and it’s no different now.

“Here’s how things go.” He elucidates, “We have three uniforms: one relatively clean, one with bullet holes and covered in blood, and one bleached gray with debris and soaked with liquid ragnite. Not the most inconspicuous disguise but can pass as a crew of wounded returning from the front lines.”

“Where’d you get the clean one then?” I question.
“The guy with his brains all over the floor of course, and speaking of which, I must thank you for presenting me with an enemy uniform in such pristine condition.”
“Then wouldn’t it make more sense for me to wear that?” I shrug “It’s my hunt after all.”
“Except I’m the one who’s doing the talking,” he retorts. “The wounded and the one tending the wounded though, those roles are up for grabs.”

With that, he tosses me another set of uniforms, this one belonging to the flame trooper, which emitted a stench so potent I swear my five senses blacked out a moment.

“Ack, it smells like rotten sewage and gasoline.” Yanagi covers her nose with one free hand.
“Well, liquid ragnite composite is quite notorious for that smell.” Satoru follows up with the same action. “Unfortunately this is the best we have, lest we try excavating the dead buried under the rubble.”
“That wouldn’t be practical,” I say, handing the soaked uniform to Yanagi.

“… You’re joking.”
As expected, Yanagi clearly had no intention of taking that uniform by any means. I simply shook my head in slow motion.
"Look, this might smell bad, but surely it's better than being soaked in blood-"
“HELL NO! I'm not putting on that thing! Do you have any idea how volatile that fucking shirt is?"

“Then how about we can let democracy decide?”
Knowing what this entails, the two us instinctively latched our attention onto the only third party present in this situation.
“Oh good grief,” Satoru pinches the bridge of his nose. “You really want me to do this?”
Well, he certainly did not have a choice.

“I suggest you play the role as the wounded then, Subaru,” He concludes, “the reason being that it makes you less identifiable, considering your heritage.”
“I get it, better safe than sorry.”
It was a sound argument on the basis of safety, and Yanagi was quick to accept it nevertheless.
“I suppose we get to changing then.” Yanagi shrugs, taking the soaked uniform of the firetrooper she then proceeds to take off the first layer of her combat dress…

Wait a minute; was she really going to undress here, right in front of us?
“On the other side, of course!” she follows up, again giving me that dead-eye stare, "What, were you expecting I change out here for you to see? What am I, a stripper?"
She sniffed out our expectations like a dying ember.

"Oh no, certainly not. Not at all."
Satoru denied the accusation as calmly as he could, but it doesn't take a genius to tell he's harboring ulterior motives.

"Yeah, you'd better not.”
Gathering her belongings, she walked around the corner, lurching her head back out to give us both one last warning before disappearing behind the vehicle.

Being so thoroughly denied, Satoru let out a short sigh of disappointment.

“Well, what do you say, my friend?”
I could already tell what he's about to suggest.
"What are we going to do about such unfortunate...circumstances? I'm not saying it is right, or that we should, but what reasons have we not to?"

“You’ve actually got a point there.”
Since we are all treading on the thin line between life and death at this moment, I might as well treat myself with some quality eye stimulant, just so to leave no regrets if I were to lose my life here.

“Then please have a go for yourself.”
Shifting a bit more to the side, Satoru offers me a better viewing angle right through the half-track’s empty seats. Donning the tattered and bloodied enemy uniform, I clocked my head back slightly, just enough to make a glance to the side of my view while obfuscating this action with myself undressing.

Yanagi’s skin showed a bit of tan, a testament to how long she has been on the field. Glints of sweat littered over her neck and soaked her black top. Everything below that was obfuscated by the rest of the vehicle, unfortunate, but I’m satisfied never….

“Ah…”
That came out our mouths the moment our eyes met.
The very next moment, my vision is covered with the underside of a military boot.
“Do it again and I’m shoving semtex up your ass.”

“Don't be such a disgrace, my friend. Have some shame.” Satoru joins in, the bloody traitor.
Alas, I at least managed to get what I want, and that alone was enough. Having that in mind, I finished the last touch of my disguise by burying my face and sprinkling my hair with debris, coating them white.

Yanagi, already finished up on her side, returned back to our side of the vehicle, arms crossed and anger certainly directed at me.

“Did you really have to do that?”
Surprisingly, she sounded more disappointed than angry.

>Well since we might all die here, I thought I might as well…

“I don’t quite see the problem, I mean this isn’t the first time we saw each other half-naked,” I answered with an innocent smile.

Yanagi’s glare softened, and eventually, she gave up with a sigh.
“Fine, Subaru, but maybe you can wait till we put an end to all this and get to the beach, then the two of you can ogle at my body as much as you want.” She traces a finger down her neck for emphasis. “Don’t you agree I’ll look far better in my swimwear than say, this?”
“But we there’s also a possibility we might not make it out of the city.” Satoru answers.
“That’s why the two of you should work hard to make that an achievable possibility!” Yanagi teases, throwing my friend’s answer right back at him. “Print the image of me in a two-piece in mind, and use it as the drive to get us out of here, easily done isn’t it?”

I couldn’t argue with her on that one, and neither can Satoru for that matter
“And that’s a promise?”
“Promise” she affirms with sincerity.
One thing was certain though, and it was that this is the Yanagi Morishima who I know. Despite being caught in this tragic war, her cheerful and optimistic nature has not changed a bit.

“Time to go,” comes Satoru’s voice as he leaps onto the driver’s seat, with me taking the seat beside him and Yanagi taking the seat behind us, we start our trek towards Osaka’s outskirts.

“You’re not changing your rifle?” Satoru asks, gesturing to our stolen weapons cache “There’s one there and more than enough ammunition to supply your average sniper.”
“Thanks, but I still prefer this one.”
He raises an eyebrow in response. "Anything special about your rifle?"

"It's a standard Type-97 I received ever since marksmanship training, and... that's about it, really."
"Don't tell me you grew sentimental for it over the time it served with you."
Yes, says the person who clutches a foreign made pistol close to his chest at all times. Though on a more serious note, Satoru was half-correct on that matter.

"Yes and no."
"Meaning?"
"Well, since I've been using this same rifle way back during my first target practice, I've grown quite used to aiming and shooting with it," I say, picking up the Type-97. "Changing to another rifle means I'll have to get familiarized with that one all over again. That takes time, the one thing we don't have.”
“Reasonable, you’d rather keep the gun and my aim, for the time being."
“Correct, and plus it’s not like I can’t refill my Type-97’s ammunition once we get into friendly territory.”

My gaze shifted towards Satoru’s chest, his foreign pistol peeking out slightly from his disguised uniform.
“And you?”
"I got this from my father, as a means of protection. ‘The least I can offer', in his words." He confesses, continuing the drive "He wants me to bring it back to him in one piece, and I plan to oblige."
A piece that is passed down from one generation to the next it seems. If that’s the case this particular pistol must carry a far greater emotional value for him than my Type-97 is for me.

As the conversation finishes, we ended up on a ruined crossroad, it is here where Satoru pulls the half-track to an abrupt stop.
“Alright, from here there are two ways we can go, the usually stationed checkpoint or straight through a Tengar comms post.” He explains. “The stationed checkpoint is usually garrisoned by conscripts from the late Yu Dynasty, aka the suckers we buried under the rubble not too long ago. Since I speak their tongue, I’ll have a better time trying to fool them. The downside is I can hear some distant fighting coming from that direction, and I’m not sure if that’s going to affect us.”

Satoru was right. From time to time the sound of artillery shells boomed from a distance, not too close from where the checkpoint is supposedly located, but not in any way far either. But, we are technically close to Osaka’s outskirts, what battles could be happening here that required the use of tanks and artillery?

“The Tengar comms post, on the other hand, is manned by the steppe barbarians themselves. Sure, they speak the language the Yu people speak, but I don’t think they give a rat’s ass about their well-being unless we bring them something important. Intel for example.”

“Let’s take the one where we’re less likely to be busted,” I say, pointing to the road to the right.
“I agree.” Yanagi backs my suggestion.
“Right, then start playing your roles” Satoru proceeds to steer the half-track towards the direction of gunshots and artillery fire, the sounds becoming ever more pronounced.
Lying motionless at the back of the vehicle, I kept my back slouched and head down as my body feasibly felt the half-track coming to an abrupt stop, followed almost immediately with someone shouting a foreign language.

「停!」 <Stop!>
「你哪支部隊的?」 <State your origin.>
The voice was loud and coarse, but that was pretty much expected from the Yu people living up the north.
「29軍102旅32營。載傷兵的。」< The 29th corps, 102nd brigade of the 32nd battalion; I’m here with the wounded.>
Satoru responded with a near exact tone and accent, though his voice was slightly muffled out by a barrage of artillery piece shattering from afar.

「瞧你這口音,你哪裡人啊?」<Look at that accent, where’d ya from, boy?>
「陝原秦山人」<Qinshan of Shaanyuan, Sir.>
「哎喲,老鄉?這可真巧啊!你那兒碰到什麼事沒有?」<Oh, a fellow villager ain’t it? What a coincidence! What happened back there?>
「剛才有人碰到詭雷,除了他倆其他都死透了。」<Guys stepped into some booby trap, everyone’s gone other than those two over there.>
The Yu soldier takes a short peek at us before returning to Satoru.

「可真不走運。」<That’s some real shite luck ya’ll have out there>
「唉,要不是咱們這麼能打,哪會被抓來這兒打什麼狗屁鬼子」 <Aye, we certainly wouldn’t be here wasting time killing island monkeys if we weren’t so good at it.>
Hearing this, the soldier lets out a sigh.
「韃子要殺鬼子,關咱們什麼事?最好早點一起死一死,咱們好回家過年!」<What’s our concern if steppe barbarians and island monkeys want to kill each other? Let them have their way! They better fuck each other up so hard neither gets to ever recover, then we can get home just in time for new year’s.>
「可不是嗎?」<How I wish that was the case.>

The small talk between the two continued on for a little more, and before I knew it, I was loaded off onto a cart, and placed into…
Wait, is this a coffin? And that stench… Yanagi is lying beside me?

“Satoru, what’s going...”
“Quiet!” he demands, clearly frustrated at the turn of events. “You two can laugh at me all you want but at least do it when we get out of the danger zone.”
In contrast, Yanagi was fighting hard to conceal her pent-up laughter.

“What… what’s so funny?” I asked in a whisper.
“You’ll know once we get out.”

Even with my body lied down completely still, I can still sense the movement of this new vehicle was slower than the half-track we hijacked. The thundering barrage of artillery and gunfire continues to loom over us like a specter, somehow it always sounded as if the fighting was nearby, like a persistent predator stalking a prey. That is until the noises die out all of a sudden.

“Get off.” Panting heavily, Satoru manages to blurt out his words filled with irritation, and as Yanagi and I got off, we could see why he has adopted such an irritated attitude, and also why Yanagi was trying to hold back her laughter.

We were carried in some sort of makeshift ambulance that can be aptly described as a large coffin fused with a bicycle, something that was more fitting as a silent comedy prop as an actual tool on the battlefield. Just picturing someone riding this on the road was enough for me to empathize with the embarrassment and physical strain the ‘driver’ bears, much less something my friend was subjugated to. This imagery also made me laugh, to which I joined Yanagi’s chorus upon an exhausted, miserable Satoru.

“Those fuckers want the half-track because another batch of, of guys was about to get deployed... And gave me this shit, because there’s a shortage of actual ambulances.” Cursing the men from the previous checkpoint, Satoru musters up the last of his strength to land a kick onto the peculiar vehicle, almost losing his balance in doing so.

Approaching my fatigued friend, I placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Hey, at least we all got out of there.”

The outlines of gray debris and concrete roads were gone, replaced by a slope of unpaved road flanked by dense greenery from both sides. A setting sun douses the landscape orange as smoke continues to arise from the center of the city. Standing on top of this hill and tracing back our path, it was impressive to see how much we’ve trekked from the last checkpoint, all this on the back of Satoru’s stamina.

“Thank you, my friend.”
And from him was a sincere smile from someone who is usually described as devious and deceitful
“Aye, the things I do for you.”
With that, he drags himself wearily to an old, worn down bus stop not far ahead, and proceed to sit on the stool to finally get some rest. Yanagi and I followed suit.

As we rested at the bus stop, I spot something that looks like wreckage on the side of the road not far ahead.

Sniffing out the forest, writing

What could possibly have done this...?
Even when looking at a distance, the damage on this armored vehicle was phenomenal. As in, the wreck itself looks half-melted, as if exposed to some intense heat.

“What is it, Subaru?” Yanagi asks with concern, noticing my distress.
“I… I have a bad feeling about this place.”
“Ah, I get it too. It’s as if someone has purposely set up a place like this.” Satoru chimes in, standing up. “I’ll go ahead and investigate.”
“Wait, you don’t have...”
“It’s my job.” He says, taking out his pistol. “Search around the greenery, I have a feeling that whoever came here before us did not waddle around on the road as much as we did.”
He scurries ahead for the damaged armor, following his advice I took to examining the forest while Yanagi took cover.

Fresh footprints, this was the first thing I noticed, and not even a day old. In fact, there was a high possibility that this person might not even be far away.
The second thing I noticed was that this was the only set of footprints around here. There was no variation in size or shape of the contour, and they strung together in a continuous stride. This meant this was only one person, but…
I turned my attention back to the destroyed armor, to which Satoru was currently investigating.

Since there were no other tracks other the one here, a high powered tank is out of the question. But then were no known single ‘lances’ that could do such powerful damage as to melt an armored vehicle. Well… at least the conventional lance rockets that are fielded in the standard military. There was one particular lance that might be able to achieve that, but to use that weapon requires the user to have some very ‘specific’ qualities.

“cтoй” <Halt>, orders a sharp, feminine voice out of the blue. While I cannot decipher what she said, it sounded a lot like Rus language, a common dialect from no other than the East Europan Imperial Alliance, Zipang’s most powerful ally on the Europan Continent.

I slowly placed my rifle on the ground and raised my hands, placing them behind my head. Satoru did the same, despite not turning back to confirm my actions. Yanagi, though slightly confused at first, eventually followed up with the same action.

“We did what you asked, now show yourself!” I yelled at her general direction.
For a while, there happened to be nothing but silence, but eventually, I could faintly see a figure emerging from the darkness of the forests, stepping into the orange sunset and coming down the hill. With a leap, she positioned herself onto the wrecked, half-melted vehicle.

There the woman stands, one hand grasping a machine gun, the other holding a huge field gun ripped straight out of a Tengar anti-aircraft post. Her flowing long hair was that of magnificent platinum, flowing like a veil in the evening breeze. A pair of crimson pupils contrasted nicely with the woman’s pale skin and hair color. Her face was that of an impeccable beauty, but her stature was abnormally tall, even for someone from the Empire.

Most notably, her body emitted a faint but domineering blue aura, making her ‘glow’ of some sorts. While I do not know what this entails, there was one thing I know for sure: my hands were shivering behind my head.

But it appears that I have caught her attention. Slowly, she lifted the field gun on her left hand and pointed the barrel at my direction. Other than almost giving me a heart attack, it demonstrated her monstrous, inhuman strength.

“You, who are you.”
As expected, her accent was extraordinarily deep, though not incomprehensible.

“I… I am Subaru Kurokawa, son of Vice-Admiral Kagetora Kurokawa of the Zipang Combined Fleet.” I blurted out in one quick sentence.
“Zipang… Zipang…” she closes her eyes as if she was trying to remember something.
“A-i-ko-to-ba”
Huh? Love words?
“Lalilulelo!” screams Satoru from under her.

And just like that, the menacing imperial drops all her weapons. That repressive blue aura also dissipates along with her action.

The three of us were all too happy to breathe a sigh of relief

“Ah, so… Subaru Kurokawa-san, Satoru Aono-san, and Yanagi Morishima-san, correct?” she inquires with a soothing, amiable smile, and a stark contrast to the murderous killing machine that she was seconds ago.

“I am Margaret Vladimirovna Denisov, your cavalry.”
“Cavalry? You’re late!” Satoru complains, collapsing back onto the stool.
“Traffic.” She replies, gesturing to the half-melted wreck.

As unbelievable as it is, there was a part of me that though she might just have the power to cause that sort of damage. Yanagi was certainly not buying into it, however.

“Nice to meet you, Kurokawa-kun” she holds my hands in a clasp.
“Ah… it… it’s a pleasure, Denisov-san.”
How bizarre, just a short while ago she looked like the reincarnation of Asura, now her attitude has been nothing but angelic and sweet. In truth, the warmth of her hands seems to have warmed up my entire body.
“Hmm, smitten right off the bat I see?”
“Yanagi!”
While I expected some reaction from Margaret, she only clocked her head, as if she did not understand what that meant at all.

Though since she's here, she probably knows things we don't.

“Since you’re here, then this must be the rendezvous point, am I right?” Satoru inquires, trying hard to bury his fatigue.
“It is!” In response, Margaret points to the top of the hill. “The transport is there.”
“Well, let’s get going then, I need a recharge.”
With Satoru leading the way up, the three of us followed behind. Margaret, in particular, appears quite eager to know more about us. By that, I meant she’s been sticking a bit too close.

Well, not that I’m complaining about potentially having someone of her caliber as a close friend, the experience was just quite… alien. Walking side by side, it became clear that I only reached her shoulder. Even with that gentle disposition, the difference still made her slightly domineering.

“So someone sent you here, specifically to rescue us?”
She gives me an assertive nod. “Your father”
“Wait… my father?”
“Yes, and they tagged along!” The tall woman warps an arm around Yanagi, pulling the girl to her side much like a kid.
“Yanagi, you and Satoru…”
“Heh, well, we were worried about you too, even though the Vice Admiral didn’t want us to come.”
“It shows that he loves you!” Margaret adds.
“I guess…” To be fair, my father’s work left me with little contact with him most of the time. I, as his son, then took up the mantle of preserving his dignity and prestige while still living under his shadow. It would be great if we actually had some time to spend together, but the war has made that impossible.

“Say Denisov-san.” I began, “Could you be one of ‘those’ people?”
“Those people?”
“Are you a Valkyria?”
The Valkyria, legends say that they were superhumans that protected the Europan continent against the various warring Darcsen tribes thousands of years ago. It was only until the recent Second Europan War that confirmed the existence of their descendants. And just like the legends say, they possess phenomenal powers that can only be described as superhuman.

“I am!” She answers eagerly, reactivating that blue battle aura from earlier, “thanks to my family.”
It was clear that Margaret takes great pride in her heritage. I’ve also heard that the Empire takes those with such potential and places them in questionable research institutes, I wonder if her family knew it and protected her from such fate.
Alas, knowing that a Valkyria is on our side of the conflict was always soothing to the mind.

“Denisov-san, do you know what things are like in the surrounding area?” I ask. “How far back have our comrades been pushed?”
"Not good, and barely holding out," she says. "But your father has an ace in the hole, so don't lose hope yet."
"An ace in the hole?"
"You will know when we are back in Kure."

Reaching our destination, the Valkyria pulled over a camo net, revealing a large motorcycle complete with an accommodating side-car. Taking off the blanket covering the side-car, she pulls out four sets of clothes: two casual and two uniforms for construction workers, a new set of disguise

“From here on I am Eirene Hauser, war photographer.” She announces. “Kurokawa-kun will be my assistant. Morishima-san and Aono-kun will be workers for my brother’s company.”

And I'll end the run for today. Apologies for the last update taking so long, I placed a bit too much stuff in it and had to cut off 1/3rds of it to use as the opening of the next session.

As usual, I'll be around for some questions and suggestions, and I'll be running again either on Thursday or Friday, if things go well.

Completely my fault, edito-kun said the same thing as well and I ignored him.

“I feel like I’m better suited playing a construction worker,” I suggest, taking the other set of uniform. “It’s commonly associated with people of my heritage after all.”
“Ah… I... I see.” Margaret mutters, surprised at my decision. “I thought your kind here did not like being associated with the average darkies in other countries.”
“We’re still good at what we do, so that’s fine,” I assure her.
While she was correct that the ‘Zipangnese Darcsens’ actively shun the Darcsen lineage and culture, the people of my heritage still dominate the fields of engineering. Apparently, it was the case in certain Europan countries as well. In this case, this was something to be proud of and makes for a more sensible disguise.
“It’ll be weird for a girl to be at a construction site, so I’ll take that uniform as well,” Satoru says, grabbing his share.
“Then I’ll be in your care, Denisov-san.”
“You’re welcome, Morishima-san.”

And just as Margaret finishes, she starts undressing her gear.
Unlike Yanagi, this was not a simple tease where she moved to some concealed place after throwing us a cheeky one-liner. Instead, she appears to think this is something completely natural to do, leaving her buxom figure out on full display.
“Gracious, you have a death wish or something?” Satoru immediately pulls me to face the other way, and around the same time, I snapped myself out of this temporary surprise.

“It’s okay, I don't mind!" came Margaret’s voice, but even then the two of us decided against it as such to not leave any bad impressions. Well, even if she didn’t take offense, Yanagi most certainly would make a big fuss about it, and I’m not quite sure if any of us really wanted to face her wrath.

Cramping two people inside a motorcycle’s side-car was probably one of the most uncomfortable rides I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing, but that did not stop Satoru from collapsing into slumber like a dead man. I personally took the time to take a good view at the natural scenery of the nation that has yet to be destroyed by war, but like my friend, I eventually fell prey to the Baku as well.

“We’re here.”
Awoke by Satoru’s declaration, I found myself looking at a stretch of land marked “Under Construction” just as dawn starts to break on the horizon. No one was here, but that was expected considering it’s barely morning.

“Someone will be picking up the two of you soon,” Margaret says, pulling up her goggles. “We’ll see each other later.”
“Have fun!” Yanagi adds before the two take off for Kure’s main gates.

Kure, is it? The sounds of seagulls, the scenes of warships docked in port, the unpredictable tides, and the smell of home… It sure feels nostalgic to be back here again, even if it has already been occupied.

“What are the two of you doing here?”
And finally, something that wasn’t the sound of bugs and the wind caught our attention, just as I was getting tired of staring into the horizon as well.

“This area is off bounds for you. Who gave you permission to leave your workstation?” scolds a secretary-looking figure coming our way. Her dark blue hair and matching eyes indicated a Darcsen Ancestry, while her name tag identifies her as simply, ‘Rise.’ Thereby confirming her as a foreigner… or is she?

“I want the two of you to report to the overseer’s office immediately,” She commands, “and don’t let me say it twice.”

“You’re from the Hauser Company?”
"You followed Ms. Eirene here, didn't you?" ‘Rise’ shoots us a glare, the kind of expression typical of someone who was looking at trash.
“Ah yes. We’re terribly sorry.” Satoru answers, playing his part as a grunt worker.
Well, since she did mention Eirene, it was safe to assume Rise was indeed on our side.

“Can you lead the way?”
“Follow.” She shoots back.
The three of us head off in a trek that took us deep into the forests of Northern Kure. Straying farther and farther away from civilization, it became clear that this isn’t a place anyone would find work in, much less so for mere construction workers.

“It was an act, but I still must apologize for my attitude back then.” Rise says, before lifting up a camo net to reveal an entrance of a bunker. The apology, unfortunately, appeared less than sincere as a result of her naturally malicious appearance.
“By the way, the name is Akane Akasaka. Outside, I’m Rise, the overseer of the Hauser Company’s Zipang Branch. I suppose the Hauser Company needs no explanations?”

“It’s the Denisov Research Foundations isn’t it?” Satoru comments, “They never actually pulled out of this country when the war broke out.”
“Correct.” Akane answers, opening up the hatch. “The Empire, our ally, could not afford an all-out war with the steppe barbarians with the Atlantic Federation still at their necks. Hence they required another means to support us… through NGOs like the Denisovs.”
“I was wondering why some princess belonging to the Empire’s richest conglomerate would turn up in a place like this, it makes much more sense this way.”

“But Margaret’s identity… How did they manage to keep her a secret from the research institutes?”
“Anything is possible with all that money.” Satoru states, entering the hatch, “However, her coming out now might be linked to the result of some recent political struggle within the Empire.”
“Rumors say that the current political faction that controls the Empire, which assumed power after the Second Europan War, had the backing of several NGOs,” Akane adds. “And while this is also a rumor, it is said that the heirs of the Denisovs have always sported natural platinum hair since birth. However, none of them ever exhibited powers of the Valkyria… till now.”
“Because until now only the men from that family were publicly known figures,” Satoru explains. “If the ancient legends were anything to go by only their women exhibit such inhuman powers.”

I remembered what Margaret said before about her family, how she talked about them and her heritage with such pride and confidence. Now I can see where it all came from, yet at the same time, it’s also quite an important legacy for her to live up to.

“Denisov-san couldn’t have been their only reinforcement right?”
“You don’t have to worry about that.” Akane chuckles, “The Denisovs supplied us with pretty much the best of their gear. Too bad they came a bit too late, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make use of them when the time comes.”
“Oh, so what other fancy toys have they sent us?”
“Other than the copious amount of small arms, we have the Empire’s latest state of the art engineering in armored warfare, but most importantly, these guys are heavily involved in creating Admiral Kurokawa’s ace in the hole.”

That word again, while this thing did have my father’s name on it, everyone who seemed to have some knowledge to what it has behaved as if it was something that could turn the tide of the war even in the most desperate of moments. Can a weapon like that really exist? Can the Denisovs really create something of that caliber? I get why Margaret would hype it up, but a local like Akane?

The tunnel became increasingly wider, more lighted, and ‘modernized’ as the three of us continued deeper. From time to time, the sound of heavy machinery could be heard from within the walls.

“This place used to be an old ragnite mine back during the Shogunate Era,” Akane explains, pointing at the walls. “It was originally modified it to act as a temporary base, though with the influx of Denisov’s personnel this place has become quite lively as time went on.”

I loved writing Aiteng since I got to do a character who can perform Olympic level power play gymnastics. But unfortunately, it appeared a bit hard to connect her with the other characters around her, leading to everyone else being underdeveloped. That went against what I originally wanted for this quest, which was to have a core of 4~5 main characters and flesh them out as much as possible.

She'll still be playing a very major role here and a possible route. Writing from Subaru's POV was just easier for me to achieve what I originally set out to do since everyone is more or less confined together.

Plus, this still doesn't impede me from writing and fleshing out a scheming and manipulative milf just like I did in the original script.

Anyways, I'll put up the next thread tomorrow and announce it on twatter.
