Personal Funds – 10 silver stags
Armament – Wooden Sword and a Shield
Men: 0,5 (you)

Thread Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRT3FOOk9ZI

On the last thread you impressed some Vale nobility with Parlor tricks and took some flaming shots with Lord Lyn Corbray who showed some interest towards your product. After promising him that you'd send him some bottles when you got your facilities set up, you retired for the day whilst waiting the crew to finish loading the cargo.

On the following day, you began your study of alchemy and learned to concoct some acids and got into a bet with Lord Lyn's Maester over whether or not you could dissolve gold with it. The manufacturing process damaged your still, but you still managed to pull it off and come out of it 10 gold dragons richer.

However, this feat did not only impress the Maester, but also Captain Stallonos who come nightfall appeared in your room with an offer. Jar and the recipe of Aqua Regia in exchange for an invitation to the Church of Starry Wisdom's annual underground Solstice Occult Auction. Upon inspecting the Catalog, you were tempted by the knowledge on the table and accepted his offer.

Unfortunately, your voyage was cut short by the band of savage mountain folk determined to ruin your day and liberate you of your possessions and potentially your anal virginity. Situation was further complicated by the rain which rendered your firearms temperamental. As the savages cut a bloody swath through your men, you made the ultimate decision.

You chose to detonate your powder stores and sink the ship rather than let the savages have access to your weaponry. Ultimately though, What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger. There was some truth to that. You were not to be reborn from the sea like the Drowned Priests liked to preach, but in the warm and fertile Reachlands.
>>
[1/3]

Rather than be stuck in Iron Islands for another decade at the hands of an abusive drunkard whose wife had long since escaped his grasp, you are now stuck in Toussaint in the Empire of Nilfgaard. No wait, you mean the Reach in the continent of Westeros. Yes, definitely the Reach.

Traditions of Chivalry are a holy thing in here however or at least your father seems to believe so. He believes that the way to immortality is through heroic self-sacrifice and determination against all odds like Ser Tallon, your honored ancestor did. You personally like to call it spite, though never to his face.

There are two things that Reachmen take very seriously: Horseborne impalement and Wine.
They seem to have come with extremely meticulous set of and rules and a form of etiquette regarding both of these things and it is seen as a Faux Pas to not be aware of these rules.
You think you'd prefer beer if you were old enough to drink.

The lands of your house are quite meager, but still situated in a fairly good position with your family's humble keep sitting between the Mander and the Roseroad. The fertile lands beneath the hill which your family's keep sits upon produces an abundance of food from which the peasants pay their taxes as well as a decent amount of cash crops.

The underlying discontent that existed in Iron Isles, in the Vale and well, anywhere else you visited didn't really exist to same degree in here. Peasants generally seemed to be a notch or two wealthier than what you were used to and a bit more stuck up. Naturally, the secondborn and thirdborn sons weren't too well off and would have some problems, but not to the point of wanting to embrace the life of vagabondage like back at the isles.
This made you feel a bit lonely.

Your current family is considerably less assholish than your previous one.

Your father: Bryen Tallon
Though ultimately a rather distant man, he holds on to the ideals of justice, fidelity and self-sacrifice. He still truly believed in the Knight's Oath he took so many years ago. Though he was past his prime, he still is preferring to be called Ser, rather than a Lord.
Peasantry seems to like him well enough for it with sons of some of the prominent members of the community serving as squires under him.

Your mother: Bella Norcross
If your father was living to the ideal of a Knight, your mother would be the lady in his story. Both of them held the idea of the knightly romance and tradition in great esteem, though from different sides of the coin. She would be the one to run the house and offer comfort whilst her husband would defend the land and win her lady love coin and glories.

The Heir: Bobbert Tallon
Your Older brother, the heir seems to be committed to following in his footsteps, hungry for glory and chivalric recognition. He truly loves his horses and diligently takes care of his equipment. Something you as a smith can respect him for.

The Twins
Then there's your younger siblings. Rickar and Ayenna. The Twins seem to stick close to eachother. They are sweet and well behaved. Father says that Rickar is going to become a Septon and that Ayenna is to become a handmaiden and then marry some famed Knight.

Then, there's you.
Since you're the spare for the heir, you too were to become a knight. You had no say in this matter. Maester protested, pointing out that you'd have the potential to rise far in the ranks of the Citadel, but your father denied him. It was more important that a Knight would inherit than the distant possibility of having a voice in the conclave. He stated that as soon as he'd find a knight suitable for your temperament, he'd make you squire for him.
>>
[3/3]
It is currently the third month of 275 AC
You are currently 7 years old.

Whilst your current father has been far more invested in your future than your previous one, that also meant that the amount of freedom you've received has been much more limited.
Your upbringing was to temper you towards becoming a squire with you having no say in the matter and as such, you were to be sent to serve as a page in the court of House Tarly as you came of age.
Age being, right now.

This mostly meant that you'll be running messages, serving drinks, cleaning clothing and weapons and learning the basics of combat or at least that's what the Maester told you.
He also said that pages might also be taught playing of musical instruments, singing, reading, writing and learning board games, though that might just be him trying to make it sound like a summer camp or something.
Supposedly your older brother has also been serving at this court for few years.

Whilst you are still young, you had a bit of time to work on a project.
What was it? (Pick 1)

>You were bored, so you 'borrowed' the forge time and again a when when the smith was away to make yourself a master-crafted piece of equipment in secret.
>Double Barreled weapon (Pistol or Musket) -comes with 30 cartridges

>You spent the time on self improvement (Gain 1b dice towards one of the physical stats.)

>Write-in suggestion (I might veto if it's too unreasonable)

>You were bored, so you 'borrowed' the forge time and again a when when the smith was away to make yourself a master-crafted piece of equipment in secret.
>Pattern Welded sword (Beautifully made and high quality, might be worth some money.)

For now we're probably going to be using swords for a while. Might also lead to some money (or favor) potential if needed.

Rifled guns are cool, but we'd get hell from our family and others. Would rather our rep not start at "Han shot first". Honor is too important in the Reach.
>>
>>2136194
Honor is nothing more than a tool in Reach.
Most of it is just pretense to make up an excuse for all the landgrabbing, the whatever sort of fuckery they come up with, but it helps maintain stability within the once four kingdoms of reach.
As long as their appearances are good enough, they can just put their word against yours and roll you over with fabricated claims.

Appearances are a way to display one's strength in Reach.
Sort of like how Tyrion got dogpiled on his moment of weakness because nobody was afraid of besmirching their honor by coming up with fabricated stories of him.
If one has fame, a good name and distinguished service, it suddenly becomes more difficult to act directly against such an individual without causing waves.

Reach is the second largest of the Seven Kingdoms, but unlike the North, it is by no means sparsely populated, yet it still maintains itself and not by merit of simply letting your vassals do as they please, but by upholding the traditions which enforce stability.
>>
>>2136164
>Rifled Weapon - preferably a musket rather than a pistol.
>>
>>2136164
>>2136294

Now that I think about it, we already have skill in marksmanship and we have more potential with guns. We can play the reputation & honor game when we get there.

Changing to
>You were bored, so you 'borrowed' the forge time and again a when when the smith was away to make yourself a master-crafted piece of equipment in secret.
>Rifled Weapon (Pistol or Musket) -comes with 30 cartridges
>>
>>2136314
Forgot to specify that I prefer a musket. (I think if it's rifled, it would be a long rifle? Not sure)
>>
>>2136164
Much as I'd like us to keep up the momentum on our still, I can't justify choosing it over a rifled weapon. Therefore my vote goes to:

>Rifled Weapon (Pistol or Musket) -comes with 30 cartridges

Specifically; a musket.
>>
>Rifled Weapon - musket KNIGHT

>You finished the designs for the booze distiller with both a temperature and a pressure gauge and best part of all, glass parts are entirely optional!

>>2136318
Well since it's master crafted, meaning you put considerable amount of time into crafting and planning it, it's going to be something along the lines of 1800 Baker Rifle of immaculate quality and adjustable sights.

It would take you couple of months to create another piece of equal quality.
Trained shot with such a weapon can reach impressive ranges, but in the age of armor it can rarely be fully brought to bear.

Additionally, rifles by nature have a slower reload as the fouling must be cleaned out.

Still the weapon is state of the art when it comes to long range shooting to the point that an argument could be made that it ought not to be tournament legal as it can in the right hands shit all over even dragonbone bows.

Also, with better marksmanship skills could we bring the rifle to its higher ranges? Allegedly the Baker rifle was meant for around 180m, but some could snipe people 500m if they were master marksmen. (Our current marksmanship skill is at 4)

Not really.
There's not a single conflict in which reachmen really fight in where you'd face Jaime as he sort of is in the Kingsguard.

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't Jaime still on his way south when Battle of Blackwater happened?

So, in summary; I still vote for a rifled musket.

Pic unrelated.
>>
What is a rifled musket?

Does it have the same disadvatage of becoming useless in rain like our previous weapons did?
>>
>>2138787
Unless we've also invented percussion caps, yes.
>>
>>2138792

Can we focus on that instead of making a masterwork weapon which will become quickly obsolete (if we continue developing firearms)?

We should continue developing the skills and knowledge from the previous lives. Inventing percussion caps would be a big step in that direction.

>>2138651
OP, can we do that? Work on developing firearms further in these years?
>>
>>2138802
Nah dude the vote is already done.

On another note, I slept on something (yes Im that pathetic) that mabye we could significantly advance health in some way.
>>
Difference between a rifled weapon and a smoothbore weapon is that a rifled weapon has grooves on the interior of the barrel which when fired, rotate the projectile as it leaves the barrel helping to stabilize the projectile. In practical terms, double the range minimum.

This allows the weapon for much greater range and accuracy than your average smoothbore, which as the name would imply, just has a smooth barrel.
The Disadvantage of a Rifled blackpowder weapon is that the barrel must be cleaned after every single shot in order to prevent fouling, thus reducing the reload times.

This is also the reason why automatic weapons aren't viable when using blackpowder as well. Without a clean burning powder, the weapon's action tends to jam up eventually.
Of course, methods of getting around this were invented about the same time percussion caps and the sufficiently advanced alloys to allow revolver cylinders started popping up.

This generally involved the use of greased up projectiles and watting, which would help clean up the barrel when firing, but this technique primarily was used for blackpowder revolvers if I am not mistaken.
>>
>>2138807
Vote hasn't been locked in yet.
I'll lock it in when I've got an update ready. Feel free to change your mind about it if you want.
>>
>>2138808
so, can we try going for percussion caps then?

And if we do develop percussion caps, doesn't that mean we will be able to reload much faster and thus have faster fire-rate?
>>
>>2138810

>>
Just caught up on everything, somehow less salt than in Dollmakers quests.
I was so looking forward to being the Alchemist Lord of the Seas. But I guess we get to do some cool stuff now.
>>
>>2138802
You would require the appropriate facilities for doing so.

To name a few you'd need a laboratory, better metalworking tools, access to a major trading hub to get materials that aren't domestically available and potentially other things as well.

Big problem you'll naturally face is that research and development is a full time job. If you are to get any lands, you'd have to delegate almost all the tasks relating to actually running your territory to either a wife, your family or your servants.

You cannot do everything yourself regardless of how smart and talented you get, but you can reduce the cost and labor associated with many things. Given time of course.
>>
>>2138816
Moving away from percussion caps, but in terms of easier and just as useful arms development, can we get to work on the minie ball? Pretty much completely solves the fouling difficulties with black powder rifles.
>>
>>2138816
So, that's a no then?
I suspected that it wouodn't be that easy to get the percussion cap tech but if we do focus on that, will it be easier in the future or is making a rifle better choice?

If we develop the still now, we should be making money by the time we are of age, right? Or at least it will be easier to set up our business if we do so, right? And with the money we make, we will be able to afford a labratory and other stuff you said.
>>
>>2138815
Technically speaking that route is very much open still, though postponed.
It is entirely possible that you can upon coming of age just fuck off and do your own thing.

Maybe you'll get a ship later and become a Knight-Captain or something?
Maybe you'll decide to join up with Stannis and sail with Davos as part of the royal fleet?
Maybe you'll join someone else's fleet? Every single region has some sort of navy, some less pathetic than others.

You're not the heir, you're pretty free to wander around as a knight scouring the land for tourneys and for lords to serve as long as your brother doesn't kick the bucket without an heir.
>>
>>2138808
I wonder if there was ever a method that simply infolves having preloaded barrels that you can just twist onto the firing mechanism or something
>>
>>2138821
You know what? Fuck it. It's a masterwork. Let's have the Minie balls in. The notion of researching them is dumb as hell considering that you guys OBVIOUSLY had some interest in musketry before dying the first death.
Let's say you made some tools as well to cast some Minie balls for your rifle.

+2 extra damage and Long Range perk
You only start taking aiming penalties at 300 yards instead of 200 yards with 1 bonus dice (or regular dice if no bonus dice available) for every extra 100 yards.

This means that you can roll down to 1d6 to hit to see if you strike a target at 600 yards, provided it's within the line of sight.

The true problem you'll have with replicating rifled muskets is that the proper tools for actually making them don't really exist, so you had to go about it the long way.
>>
>>2138836
Solution like that would be considered extremely expensive as standardized tools for creating parts like that didn't exist, which mean that only the guy who made them can fix them and very few people actually could make screw parts.

I would not be surprised if some nobleman had a weapon like that made at some point though, but no doubt the idea was not seen as a good one by the wider society.
>>
>>2138814
You lacked the necessary tools, facilities and resources to try and research percussion caps.
>>
Question: Can we increse our honour, prestige or whatever it was that these people find so important by hunting savages?
>>
>>2138846
Awwwww. What about paper cartridges btw? On a scale of 1 to 10 how difficult would it be to develope them? I wouldnt put it past being as difficult as the minie ball.
>>
>>2138852
Well, this is Reach and Maesters in oldtown ought to have paper being produced.

I do actually remember giving you some cartridges for personal use when you first started. Can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to swipe some paper for cartridges.

Just don't expect to magically have unlimited supplies of the stuff.

Alright, as far as I can tell, the consensus is to the Musket Knight.

At a very early age, you with as much secrecy as you could muster, managed to swipe enough materials as well as "borrow" some tools at opportune times, allowing you to craft your very own weapon.
With very little else to do at such a young age save play and help with the occasional trivial chore. You had a fair bit of free time, which allowed you to put meticulous detail on the design, emphasizing on range and accuracy over all.

You did not have many opportunities to test it as you weren't that often unsupervised and the Maester would probably have figured out quick that you've been helping yourself to his stores. Not that he ever seemed to use most of the stuff. You're pretty sure most of the non-herbal stuff is just in there because he thought it was interesting and then forgot about it.

Your would change when you reached the ripe age of 7 when you were to be hauled off to become a page at Court of House Tarly to learn etiquette, horsemanship, heraldry, hawking, hunting and other things that a young aspiring knight ought to know.

I currently lack the time to create a long update, but I'd rather not let the thread waste away, so here's a couple of things to vote on.

As a page, you would act as a servant to House Tarly in exchange for education. Such learning scenarios would allow you an opportunity to distinguish yourself, that is if you didn't intentionally wish to avoid making a commotion. If you wish to play through this childhood time, I will accommodate. However, if you wish to timeskip until you become a squire, I will allow that as well.
Start this run as Squire at roughly the same age as last run?

How about "The Last Kiss"?
>>
I was reading through the rulebook and stumbled upon a bit of a loophole that may or may not he canon.

To be precise, it relates to the wording used regarding the Maester Oaths. Upon completing one's chain, they are "Allowed" to take the oath.

I started looking into this and indeed, it seems that one could indeed forge as long a chain as he wanted while being committed to never say any oaths.

Still, Maester job is relatively cushy, prestigious and extremely well paid, so I doubt that there are any known cases where someone entered the Citadel and managing to forge their whole chain only to say "Nah bro, I think I will pass on the oaths since look, it says here that it's technically optional." and then just leaves.

Interesting tidbit

It is 281 AC.

You've finished your time as a Page and your Father has found you a Knight to Squire under.
One Ser Hector Heronford he met during a tourney at Lannisport in honor of Prince Viserys' birth. Upon returning home, you were shortly introduced to him and sent off to join him on his journeys.

Supposedly he was a Questing Knight of Matchless valor, who took an oath to win a hundred jousts to prove his worth to his Lady, whom he refuses to name so as not to bring shame unto her if he fails.

You spent some time going from tourney to tourney, partaking at various smalltime jousts, however, you are now heading to the big leagues. The Tourney of Harrenhal, just like everyone who is anyone.

During your time as pages for Lord Tarly, you and your Elder brother Bob got a lot closer. Maybe he started to mature? Maybe you started to feel lonely? Maybe you simply missed having someone like Devran around? Whatever it is, he now thinks you have mental issues, but he recognizes that you are extraordinarilty talented at the same time. Like a Savant, or so he likes to call it.

Your life as a page didn't entirely go without incident.

You were seen by many of the tutors as the worst and best kind of pupil at the same time. Obstinate, unmalluable but nevertheless terrifyingly talented and quick to grasp things for someone so young.
You got beaten many times for backtalk, but they did realize rather eventually that such half-measures as physical punishment was not enough to change your way of thinking.
Lord Randyll ended up chalking it up to your stubborn lineage and stated that boys will be boys.

Few people short of the Maesters actually had qualifications to teach you in several subjects as you when it came to letters and numbers, you tended to be on par with your teachers.
It was the more physical sort of education that you most benefitted from and the Master at arms was quite pleased at the progress you showed.

You did also 'borrow' a language book on High Valyrian at times and did some independent studying. You can probably order a beer at this point.

Oh, and Bob impressed some knight with his guts and got himself made a squire a couple of years before you. He really takes the whole 'defend the weak' part very seriously. Even though you were more than a match for him during spars, he did seem to always view you as one of the weak.
Funny thing that.

> Your stats have raised!
> Fighting 4
> Athletics 3
> Agility 4
> Endurance 3
> Animal Handling 4
> Weapon proficiencies gained: Sword, Shield, Lance, Bow (1b+ to all)

You may be a fresh squire, but you didn't start from scratch. Noble squires have a distinct advantage over lowborn ones. You have a slight advantage over the highborn though you are no match for a Knight yet. A trained Man-at-arms would be your equal.
Not necessarily in strength, but in skill.
Rather impressive for a 13 year old, but not entirely unheard of if you count someone like Sword of the Morning into the equation.

Long story short, Rhaegar kidnaps Lyanna Stark who is bethrothed to Robert despite already being married.

This naturally pisses off the Starks, which leads her older brother banging at gates of King's Landing, yelling "Come die you emo cunt.".
The Mad King puts his whole gaggle on trial, which included a lot of important people. He demanded a trial by combat, which lead to him having a bucket of wildfire dumped on him and his friends tortured to death.

Not to leave things to this, the Mad King wanted to exterminate the bloodlines of the traitors, which lead to Baratheons, Starks and Arryns ganging up as well as their allied the Tullys showing up on their side as well.

After pacifying any loyalists amongst their ranks, that masterstroke lead to four of the seven kingdoms uniting against the mad king.

The remaining three however...
Reach carried the whole war for the King
Iron Islands naturally didn't give a fuck and only at the end decided to side with Robert Baratheon
Dorne is rather infamous for it's reluctance to send troops anywhere, but they did Rhaegar's wife, Elia Martell well enough to aid their cause.
Westerlands kept blowing off the king until they could betray him and sell him out to Baratheons.

Thus Jaime became the Slayer of Kings and Robert King
>>
You are now about to enter the point in time when Jaime is to be put on King's Guard and Rhaegar will try to woo Lyanna by offering the honors of winning to tourney to her rather than his wife, thus crowning Lyanna his queen of love and beauty.

There was also an incident where he tried playing some of his emo songs to her. Had you picked up singing and musical instrument at this point, you could have pulled off some hit songs of your own.
>>
I have a crazy idea....

what if we kill off emo boy
>>
>>2143741
We could mix poison with his drink, that would stop this whole war but keep the mad king in power.

Good luck getting close to the Prince when you are still too low down the totem pole to be guaranteed a meeting with any of the high lords, let alone the heir to the throne.

Also, everything he puts in his mouth is tasted by someone else.

Also, keep in mind you do not have anything to gain from self-sacrifice. To you the world ceases to exist and you move on to the next if you kill yourself in an attempt to change history.

>>
During my flight I went through the rulebook and turns out I have been calculating the damsge wrong all this time.

You don't roll for damage.
What you roll for is either fighting or Marksmanship and multiply the degrees of success with weapon damage.
This means sword in your hands would do 3 damage per degree of success you get over enemy's combat defense.

Basically, this would have meant that had you bought or made a suit of really good plate armor, you probably could have taken on those boarders with this ruleset.

It also makes lighter armor still really fucking good.

The only difference seems to be guns which ALWAYS do the same damage of they hit regardless of the stats.

Going to bed. Expect some rule changes when I get back. I did mention this was a learning experience for me.
>>
>>2144251
Interesting. Look forward to any future personal fights.
>>
>>2144483
Basically pistols would sell like hotcakes, considering that it's a sidearm that allows a relatively untrained marksman to cause damage to rather tough opponents with very little sacrifice to carry capacity.

Every knight and lordling that were no marksmen probably want one after trying it out.
>>
>>2143839
Is this a cannon thing which actually happened in Thrones, or is this something just for the quest?
>>
Okay, so Rad suggested we look into the process behind making fulminate of mercury if we want percussion-caps to upgrade our ammo, so I did, and while I was skimming the Wikipedea article on Edward Charles (who invented it) I came across this:

>In 1813 he invented a method of refining sugar which involved boiling the cane juice not in an open kettle, but in a closed vessel heated by steam and held under partial vacuum.
>At reduced pressure, water boils at a lower temperature, and so Howard's development both saved fuel and reduced the amount of sugar lost through caramelisation.
>The invention, known as Howard's vacuum pan, is still in use.

Does Westeros have sugar?
>>
>>2147202
We had this discussion recently, if sugar should be present and the answer reached I can't remember but there is no particular reason to believe we couldn't find such a plant with sufficient exploration and study.
>>
>>2147187
Yea, it's something that actually happened.
You can check the wiki for it.

Also, Jaime won his first squire's melee at your age so he is at least on your level when it comes to swordsmanship even at such tender age.

>>2147202
Sure does, but not really that much. Sugar canes are primarily an Essosi thing and Westerosi sugars are primarily made from honey. There might be few maesters that do know how to make Syrup, but thus far the idea of maple syrup isn't widespread in the north as Maesters are not trusted there and literally anywhere else he land is better used for other sort of development.
>>
>>2147263
This is a bit unrelated to the tournament.

If we ever visit the citadel for some reason and find many alchemy books or find many alchemy books for another reason, could we learn to create more exotic metals? (Of course not Valyrian Steel, that takes dragon blood and other stuff)
The maesters may be behind us in many places, but they know a lot more than most people think. (Mountain super zombie soldier is their super science) I wonder what kind of alloys and metals they came up with. Other than magic metals, they could know the secrets to metals we don't know and metals that were lost to time back on Earth. (Wootz steel for example)
Just thought about this from how much knowledge alchemists have hidden away in complex, "encoded" books after we got HCl from our first alchemical book.

Just some thoughts, not too relevant right now since we're at the tournament at the moment.
>>
>>2148609
You would not have access to the forbidden section of course.

This would contain certain military secrets, volumes on magic and dragons, all the original original manuscripts and various other books that are not politically appropriate at the time.

As to what kind of alloys do they know?
I'd have to think on that on case by case basis. However, considering your past in metalworking, they would know fewer than you.

Wootz isn't a secret anymore to us if I am not mistaken though?
Wasn't Wootz just an alloy of steel and glass that was a bitch to work with.

Necromancy is absolutely forbidden in Citadel and books relating to that art are banned, not just in the citadel but in general. Qyburn learned the rest of his arts somewhere else. Keep in mind he traveled with a Qohorian mercenary company, so what he did was ok to them.

Alchemical books are all encoded because it draws heavy inspiration from hermetic societies of our world.
>>
What the order of Maesters primarily tend to be are healers, historians, stewards, librarians and postmen all in one.

They aren't people who reverse engineer things.
They aren't pioneers who make new scientific discoveries.
They aren't a cabal of magicians or a gathering of alchemists.

Order of Maesters is far more mundane than people believe it to be. Guys like Qyburn and the like aren't the norm in the citadel.

The Citadel is the closest thing Westeros has got for a wikipedia. The Maesters may not have an answer immediately, but a Maester serving at Lord's court would be able to send out a Raven to Oldtown or any other Maester he knows and ask, thus being able to get an answer at a reasonable timeframe by medieval standards.

Just a heads up on the whole deal with getting a ship.
Since I actually found rules on how to roll for trade skills, the likelyhood of you actually managing to make similiar amounts of money as with a longship as I let you get away with before will probably go down.

Then again, none of those jobs were standard.
One was smuggling a renegade Knight, first one was just Harlaw wanting to indirectly meddle with your family and the last one was effectively blockade running.

None of them were bog standard sailing jobs
>>
>>2150568
Invest at least 2 silver stags and spend 10 hours for at least 5 days. After this, roll a challenging (9) Cunning test. A success grants you 6 x profit of your initial investment.

This is what the rulebook says about trade skills.
I do not think this is too well designed, so I need to homebrew this to use degrees of success.

Just out of curiosity, since you do sort of have the skillset and the breeding this time, which Lord's court would you preferably see yourselves in?

Even though Stannis is the future "Rightful heir" and not a plotter, he does get rhllor in his life in the future, and magic can perma-kill us. I would rather stay away from the magic fire pyre.

>>
Hang on; I just remembered something from the Velo quest:

isn't Bobby B. assassinated? Could we maybe do something about that? When does that happen?
>>
>>2151672
Bobby B gets drunk and loses a fight with a wild boar.
We could keep him from dying if we get someone more loyal to him as his cupbearer.
>>
>>2151630
Depends on the magic and how it is wielded.
If you just get burned with dragon fire or stabbed wifh an obsidian dagger, that won't permakill you.
However if you start playing with your soul as a bargaining chip, then yea, you probably would die permanently if things go tits up.

Certain forms of magic erode ones memories as a cost, so those could eventually lead to an ego death.

>>2151672
He does sorta get poisoned when hunting and gets boared. You could try and prevent this, but it will take over a decade to get to that point I believe.

>>2153627

>>
Primary advantage of Stannis is that he is a lawful ruler to the core.
Downside is he is inflexible, unsociable and his wife is a heretic.

Renly is the polar opposite. Flexible, popular, but ultimately weak willed and moody ruler.

Starks are very high-strung on the whole honor business. Then again, North is yuge and you rarely have to deal with them if you get lands there.

Robert is a pretty good king altogether. He is sociable, but doesn't take any shit. Downside is he doesn't want to rule and any stuff you make for them will end up in Lannister hands

Speaking of Lannisters, their advantage and disadvantage is that they are quite happy to throw away pawns that are no longer useful to them and replace them with ones that are.

The Vale on the other hand is in the pocket of Petyr Baelish via Lysa Arryn. You have no idea about their long term plans.

Riverlands are sort of a clusterfuck. Always at center of every war and fractured politically, lacking a strong leader.

The reach is all about popularity, which means that even if you were monstrously strong like the mountain, you'd be unlikely to ever get anywhere without approval of the lords and ladies of the realm.
Also, your persuasion is pretty shit.
>>
Also, don't think it's gonna be THAT comfy in the Reach.
Not like War isn't coming there as well during war of five kings
>>
>>2153834
There's also the upcoming Greyjoy Rebellion as well, which means Ironborn raids.

>>2154240
Hopefully by that time we'll be able to turn them from iron born to lead buried.
>>
>>2154256

>>
>>2154256
If ever near the coast, I approve of taking pot shots at iron born raiders for target practice.

(Bayonet for the rifle anyone? Or just have a "public" long sword if push comes to shove?)
>>
By the way, you guys aren't carrying your rifle publicly because you wanted to keep it a secret and since there's really no way to store it clandestinely while on horseback, it is waiting for you at your house. Just ought to let you know.

You aren't exactly traveling by carriage after all. That's the primary advantage of pistols. You can keep them hidden.
>>
That is unless you suddenly stopped caring that people see your boomstick when you got squired.
>>
>>2160107
Any reason why we might wanna keep it secret? Having it around might be good for practice when people aren't looking
>>
>>2160247
Given how low in power we are some lord might force us to make them for him and we would struggle to get out from under his thumb.
>>
>>2160273
Well, that would be a Tyrannical action. Still, your current King is one, so you know.
>>
Also, you're not as vulnerable politically as when you were Ironborn.
There's a fair bit more peer pressure even for assholish lords not to try and fuck you.
>>
My trip to Rome has ended.
Still, this week is Christmas, so don't expect anything during the weekend.

One thing you may wish to consider is whether or not you want to try and start your own branch house or try and get more involved in the family business.

It should be pointed out that if you wish to stay in Reach and use guns, you might want to consider that Knights are very well established within Reach, which means the political pushback against use of such weapons would be all the more greater.
You'd probably face similar problems in the Vale as well.
>>
Use of wildfire, poisoned weapons, sorcery and nasty tricks like pocket sand are generally speaking frowned upon by the polite society.

Guns would probably fall into that category for most people as well. + Knights don't like it when you spook their horses.
>>
>>2160623
I'd rather not make too many waves or anything till we have enough independence.

How hard would it be to get a private houseguard for ourselves in the future? Or is that only a thing for lords themselves?
>>
>>2160741
You mean as in the Personal Guards unit that is in the rulebook?

I would say that they're something you can't get without being landed as they are very much elite and it would imply a certain degree of investment in terms of not just coin, but also infrastructure to support them.

Of course, I might allow you to hand pick people to form your personal guard if you can convince them to follow you, but I won't let you just slap down 1200 Gold Dragons on the table for that unit.
>>

>>
>>2160877
We have a vendetta and bonus against savages. I don't think anyone would mind if we went hunting for mountain tribes. Other than that, iron born are fair game if they're raiders.
>>
>>2161409
Ironborn might be raiders, but they aren't savages. Not by Westerosi standards at the very least.
Ironborn do build towns, cities and castles.
Old way traditionalists aren't the only faction in the Isles.

Savages would be Wildlings, Dothraki, Mountain Tribes and the like. Knights raid and pillage as well it should be remembered.

But yea, when war breaks out with Ironborn, they become fair game. You could hypothetically try and steal one of their ships and start raiding THEIR coasts, stealing away women, thralls and whatever else you find.

Odds are we will be knighted at anywhere from 16 to 20 given that only a handful of skilled fighters were knighted at 15.
So unless we can avoid squireing for anyone we will be serving under our knight until after Robert B. takes the throne.
However we will be 13 at the time the kingswood brotherhood is destroyed so if we are able to engage them then we could have a chance at an early knighthood.
Fun fact, this would make notably us a knight younger than Jamie L. (knighted for deeds of valor when fighting the kingswood brotherhood) but still older than the youngest knighted man, Daemon Waters.
But to do so we would need to serve under one of the following knights one of the unknown who fought the brotherhood.
Lord Sumner Crakehall
Ser Arthur Dayne
Ser Barristan Selmy
However if we squire for Dayne or Selmy we will almost defiently be neck deep in fighting if we fail to get knighted before the rebellion.
Also Dayne helps kidnap Lyanna makeing the Starks bear some animosity for us if we squire for him.
However Lord Crakehall lives in the westerlands so if we squire for him we will stay out of the fighting and live alongside Jamie Lanniester and Merrett Frey ((a strong, slow, clumsy, stupid youth who takes a blow to the head and never gets knighted) He is also a bully)

>But to do so we would need to serve under one of the following knights OR one of the unknown who fought the brotherhood.
Also Urrigon Greyjoy the fourth son of Lord Quellon Greyjoy will die in 8-9 years from having his fingers cut off then unwisely sown back on.
The maester that reattaches them is later killed the same way.
>>
We could always buy our knighthood.
Ask our parents some money for gear, gamble it all on the bouts we know will end up happening.

Namely Rhaegar becoming Champion. We use the money to bribe a hedge knight to anoint us and legally speaking we are free to do whatever as we both have the rank of a knight, some pocket money and we are of legal age to be considered a man in Westeros.

This is true.
Then again, it reflects more poorly on the knight willing to sell the knighthood than on the individual willing to buy it.

If you stay true to your vows and uphold the ideals of knighthood, people might think you're a bit roguish and crafty, but not that spitting upon the institution of Chivalry. As long as you live up to the role of a knight, nobody will call you a false one even if the title was bought.

As long as the whole thing makes for a good story for the bards and doesn't portray you as a douchebag, it's good PR.

Of course, your dad would disapprove, thinking it an underhanded method.
Then again, he'd think that your rifle would be an extremely underhanded weapon as well.

Also, I'll try to write at least one update before Christmas.

>Pre-Christmas Update!

[1/3]

In the distance rises Harrenhal, a veritable behemoth of a castle, more akin to a mountain shaped in the form of a hand grasping from the edge of the horizon, it's great towers peeking from the horizon whilst the walls were still hidden by the curvature of the planet.

"We're almost there my faithful Squire! We ride towards the grandest tourney the world has ever seen with Knights all across the realm seeking to prove their worth! Honor and Glory are within our sights."
You trod on your Rounsey's back in your knightly master's wake, with disinterest at his latest Drama show.
"mhm"

He begins to make exaggerating hand gestures as he begins once again retelling the tale of his quest.
"Yes, it is within this Tourney that I shall win my hundreth tilt and crown my Lady Love the Queen of Love and Beauty!"

You adjust your position in the saddle and pull out a notebook from your saddle and look at your records.
"You're still at 36 victories from my counting."
"Pardon?"
"Since I became your Squire a year ago, you've tilted lances 60 times in total, which means you've 60% chance of victory on average."
He scoffs
"My Chivalry is not something so petty that can be measured in mere numbers."
"Whatever you say Ser Hector."

The Two of you kept on riding towards the massive castle in the distance as Hector made sure to introduce himself to every stray peasant and retell his tales with varying degrees of embellishment depending on the audience's interest.

Still, even though he's a drama queen and a braggart, the numbers do not lie. He is competent enough to score himself on the top half of any knight he faces. You had doubts of your father's choice initially, thinking that the two of you would mix about as well as oil and water, but your initial appraisal was quite wrong.

Since he thinks himself the best thing since sliced bread- Wait, that doesn't work since pre-sliced bread isn't being sold yet. Another thing on the list.
Anyhow, since he things himself so magnificent, he also thinks that his squire must therefore by proxy be magnificent and above certain tasks, thus leading you to be liberated from some of the more menial tasks of being a squire and more focused on horsemanship and fighting.

Perhaps he recognized your talent for picking things up quite quickly.
Perhaps he simply thinks that he's a great teacher and full of himself.
Perhaps he thinks that the more skilled his squire becomes, the greater his own prestige shall be.
Regardless, he has begun to include you into the stories he spins every time now. Naturally the stories always focus around him and his nameless lady love, but you're included as his faithful squire and sidekick.

Hooray

[2/3]

After hours of riding towards the great castle, you began to truly understand the enormity of the construct. Standing outside Harrenhal's walls, you began to wonder exactly where did they get all the stone for this construct.

While you're no architect by trade, you still cannot help but to call into question it's ability to remain standing. It should be way too large and heavy to remain standing at the shape it is at. The design itself didn't seem practical in the least either.
The Scorpions standing on the walls, their range and accuracy would be such that it's doubtful they could even hit a man sized target from that height.

Despite it's size and Grandeur, the castle was still a ruin.
Save for the parts that were sawn off, most of the castle and it's walls were deformed from being subjected to dragonfire generations ago. Even after hundreds of years and several attempts, the repairs of the castle have barely progressed anywhere. With this pace, it could take another thousand years until even a single tower is restored to it's former glory.

You mused whether or not such a construct was even doable with modern technology and engineering or whether or not magic was utilized in it's construction. You also wondered whether or not the stone itself held any special qualities that made the castle possible.

"Come Squire! Surely folk both high and low have been awaiting the arrival of Ser Heronford and his trusty Squire for days. Let us alleviate them of their suspense."

You roll your eyes and follow Ser Hector to the gates, through which many a rider and pedestrian alike was coming back and forth from. At the feet of the Gatehouse, you began to finally realize the true enormity of this place. The Gatehouse itself was far larger than any keep you had thus far seen. Be it during your travels as a Squire or as a Captain, it was colossal, though it sort of defeated the point of a gatehouse, as it were not that much of a bottleneck.

The Guards at the entrance were making sure that everything was in order. The Tourney itself wouldn't start yet for five more days, but they were already making sure everyone was accounted for before entering the courtyard.

As you approach, the guards standing by the palisades directed you to a bookish looking man who was sitting under a pavilion set underneath the gatehouse with a large tome.
"More contestants I see? You're a bit early, but it's fine. We were expecting as much. Might I have your names please?"
"I am Ser Hector of Heronford and this is my Squire, Arthur of House Tallon. Perhaps our deeds precede us. I am on a Quest to win a hundred tilts for my Lady."
The Man smiles patronizingly at Ser Hector
"Alas, I'm afraid such a tale has yet to reach my ears. Let me just take a record of your device and you're good to go to continue your noble quest... Very good. I wish you best of luck in the Tourney. Next please!"

You walked through the massively oversized gatehouse into the courtyard. It was more akin to going through a particularily large alley with two apartment blocks on each which formed into one via an arcing roof high above.

"So, what next oh illustrious Ser?"
"We go see if your family has yet arrived."

As you finally made it through the Gatehouse, you were assailed by an impressive sight. Streamers bearing colours of the great houses hanging at nearly every entrance showing the areas which were allocated for use of those houses and their vassals.

Harrenhal could accomodate everyone. There was no need for pavilions, save for the pleasure and convinience of the noble lords as well as serving as shops for the commoners, many of whom were hauling goods to the market area near the tourney grounds.

Riding through the Reachlands sector, you found your family's sigil under the Tarly's camp alongside with other familiar sigils. After a bit of questioning of the servants, you found out that your entire family had arrived to this Tourney as well earlier today and that they had been given a chamber inside the Wall, which had a window view towards the tourney grounds like so many noble houses did.

After finding your way to the quarters assigned to your parents, your father immediately walks to greet Hector.
"Ah, Ser Heronford! It is always good to see you. Hopefully my son had not given you too much trouble. I heard he was quite a handful when he was a page."
It wasn't my fault they weren't up to the task.
"Certainly not! He has the makings of a great Warrior. Indeed, he already could give any man-at-arms a run for his money and then some in an honest fight. In a less than honest fight though, a lesser knight might fall to him. Truly I could not ask a more fitting squire."
Your father releases his grip on Ser Hector's hand and walks to you.
"How about a hug son?"
"If it would please my Lord Father."
He looked at you and there was an akward tension in the air.
It was a bit strange. At this point you were past your 60's mentally, which made you technically older than your father. You didn't really know how to handle this sort of situation. As much as you despised your earlier father, at least you knew where you stood with him, it was a mutually hostile relationship.
That was simple.

He decided to walk through the barriers you had erected and give you a hug despite the strange atmosphere.
"I understand I haven't spent much time in your life, but it's for your own good. You'll understand that when you're older."
"If you say so, then surely that must be the case."
You really don't know how to handle him.

*Ahem*
"Lord Bryen, I'd like to request your permission to enlist your son Arthur to the Squire's Melee if you'd allow me."
What
Your father looks at Ser Hector with a stern and serious face
"You do understand that he is just 13. Youngest lads normally are at least 14 in the Squire's contests. There will be several adults competing as well. I do not think that is wise."
"Lord Bryen, Jaime Lannister managed to win his first Squire's melee at 13 years old."
"At a tourney arranged at Lannisport fighting against his own bannermen. That is a very different situation. This is the greatest tourney in living memory!"
He looks at you
"Besides, I'm not even certain this is something he'd want to even do."

Voting for:
>Yeah, why not? Sounds fun.
Except maybe phrase it more like "If the bold Ser Hector has faith in me, then I do not fear the challenge!" or something like that.
Honestly, I'd rather not, but I think this could be kind of crucial to maintaining a good relationship with our knight. Besides; what's the worst that could happen?

Also: does Ser Hector actually have a lady love, or is he just a bit of a window-licking turbo-mentalist?

It's just that you mentioned he never calls her by name & that makes me wonder if we're embroiled in some faux-medieval super-autist's quest to impress his imaginary waifu.

Pic unrelated.

You aren't actually sure if he pulled that out of his ass. He never revealed her name to you, but you are pretty certain at least 70% of the stuff that comes out of his mouth is complete bollocks.

Entertaining for sure, but almost complete bollocks.
Still, all of his bullshit has at least a kernel of truth to it.

There is a lady love and an oath like this somewhere I have read about. Once I find it again ill post it here.

Also this could help us meet the knight of the laughing tree.

You muse the notion in your head. Sure, you might be an utter manlet in comparison to most of the contestants nor are you particularily specialized in any particular style fighting yet, but you're fairly certain that you're more experienced than them in fighting.

In addition, it'd be a decent opportunity to earn some gold and glory, not to mention it'd look great in your resume in the future.

"Sure, why not? Could be fun."
You give a smug grin at Ser Hector whilst emphasizing your speech with dramatic hand movements
"and if the Bold Ser Hector has such faith in me as a fighter, then how could I possibly back down from the challenge?"

"Well said my faithful squire!"
He pats your on the back

Your father still looking unsure.
"Fine then, I suppose I'll give you a chance at glory, but not until after I see your developement personally. Your brother ought to be showing up soon as well with Ser Hosman. We'll talk more after that."
"Until then however..."
He goes to fetch a small lockbox and hands it to you along with a key
"If you indeed are intent on fighting in the tourney, you ought to at least make sure your equipment is in order before that. Here. don't spend it all in one place."

You open it and look inside.
There's four gold dragons in a small bag as well as another larger bag of silver.
>Gained 4 Gold Dragons and 210 Silver Stags ( 1 Gold Dragon = 210 Silver Stags)
>Total assets now: 1050 Silver

Gold. Now, that's a sight you've rarely seen since your death. Hopefully you'll get more in this life than last. You could get a decent shield and armor with this. Of course, you could save money by making the armor yourself, though 5 days isn't really enough time for creation of a Masterwork plate, nor would you have the funds to do so anyhow.

You mind is racing at the possibilities. There's a fair bit you could do with this much money. You know that Rhaegar is going to win this tourney. You also know that a mystery knight is going to show up, so you could gamble money on them if you felt like it, provided you don't interfere with the tournament results in any way.

Still, winning the Squire's melee in a stage as large as this could possibly get even you anointed by someone important. Of course, you could always become a Mystery Knight yourself and compete in the Jousts.

Money and Tourneys
>How Knights tend to earn money outside of their salaries:
>In most tourneys, Knights and Squires who lose in tourneys forfeit their arms and armor to the victor, as well as their horse, should there be a joust in question. Losers often ransom their equipment back for coin and it is considered dishonorable to refuse the ransom, save in situations when such ransom is insultingly low.
>Thus, any Knight or Squire who wins at least 2 or 3 matches tends to end up walking out with more money they came in with.
>The Champions of Tourneys earn a prize money set up by the Lord.
>Defeating opponents of wealth and prestige can lead to a big payout as the ransom for their gear is fabulously high, but this is balanced by the protection offered by the immaculate equipment and training they can afford.
>Letting your opponents reclaim their equipment without paying ransom is considered a very honorable deed by many and is usually only done as recognition of a worthy foe.

You look into the eyes of your Lord Father
"Thank you. I'll be sure to put this to good use."
"Yes, well, I'm sure you're eager to go ans spend it right away, so I won't keep you any longer. Just don't spend it all in one place."

You close the lid on the container of your newfound wealth and put it in your satchel.
"Once again, thank you."
You give to your distant father figure an akward hug before taking off with Ser Hector.

As you walked with Ser Hector down the stone stairways of Harrenhal's immense walls you talked about the upcoming challenge that lies ahead.
"Have you decided what you're going to get? I personally wouldn't worry about getting a new weapon. Tourneys as high status as this will always provide loan equipment for participants in order to prevent foul play and accidents."

"Do you have any recommendations?"
"That depends what sort of tactic do you want to go with. You're pretty small and agile, so a good shield with light armor could work pretty well for you."
You took a break at one of the windows and looked as the peasantry building wooden watchtowers in the backrow for the wealthier non-noble patrons of this event.
"Alternatively, you could always get some better armor. It's better against less skilled opponents than you, but your reactions will be a bit slower due to the added weight. However with the added protection of armor, wielding a two-handed weapon is not so dangerous anymore."
"Is there a reason why you shouldn't wield a two-handed weapon whilst wearing no armor?"
"Sure, you could do that, but it's only a matter of time you get unlucky and then it won't be pretty."
You look at Ser Hector's kit
He's wearing both a half-plate, a shield and a sword.
"Any reason why I shouldn't mimic your kit?"
"Money for the most part. You can't exactly afford a suit like mine with your budget, no?"
"You never know, I'm a pretty good haggler."
He scoffs
"Largesse is a knightly virtue. You shouldn't be so niggardly."
"Says the man wearing half-plate to the boy in leathers."
He bonks you on the noggin
"Go get your gear sorted, I'll need to enter us into the lists."

Costs of them
>>
It should be pointed out that Jousts are the crowning moment of the tourney and will happen as the last event, meaning that any winnings you earn from the Squire contests, you can put towards gambling if you'd like.
>>
>>2167617
I'd honestly say either ring if we are going light or make our own scale, splint or brigandine because as we grow older we can adjust the amour unlike plate which will only fit us now
>>
also are we a manlet because of our age or are we just generally short
>>
>>2167627
If you are making the armor yourself, you could also make munitions armor which sort of obsoletes ring and scale armor.

Check the Advanced armors picture as well.
You lack the pistol for making proofed armor though, but you don't need to worry about them since nobody has guns but you for now.
>>
>>2167634
You are short because you are on your late 13's
You are about as tall as a Crannogman at the moment
>>
Easier way to go about this is ask what sort of style do you intend to fight with after the tourney and go with that.

Like if you want to wield a two-hander, you probably want to make some pistols later as you cannot carry both one and a rifle.

If you want to snipe on foot, you probably want a towershield and a sidearm.
If you intend to do so on horseback, you probably should ditch the shield altogether and possibly swap it with something easily carried on yourbelt like a buckler and a sidearm.

Or you know, you could go full Indiana Jones and abandon armor in favor of a whip and a revolver as soon as you can.
>>
make munitions Armour for 300
buy either a bastard sword or longsword for 700/500
and a large shield for 40 or a tower shield for 60 if we go with the long sword
>>2167648
I see ourselves using rifle on foot/sea/sieges but I can't see us reloading a black powder rifle on horse a brace of pistols would be better for mounted combat imo
>>
>>2167667
You could always buy a battlewagon or get yourself a squire if you are worried about the reloads on horseback.

But yes, you would need a carbine or a pistol to reload on horseback, which mind you isn't the worst tactic ever.
>>
>>2167690
You said our rifle is basically a Baker rifle, yes? That's not a particularly long weapon, it's more than possible to reload on horseback even if a shorter gun would be more practical. If we had to clean the fouling out every time, that'd cause problems, but the Minie balls solve that issue so really there's nothing stopping us from using our rifle on horseback.
>>
>>2167861
True, it's doable while stationary.
Of course, you as of now are still too short to pull it off. As a full grown adult, yea.
>>
For now, we're in a tournament and need a melee kit. I'm supporting going munitions armor for 300 and getting the largest one handed sword we can with a shield.

Gun knight can come outside of tournaments.
