>What is this?
A quest set in the Naruto universe roughly 27 years before the start of the series following Yoko Yamisaki, a teenage kunoichi on a quest for respect in a world dominated by figures such as Hanzo the Salamander, the Sannin, the Kage, and even the clans of her village.

>Who is Yoko?
Yoko Yamisaki is the 13 year-old daughter of a chemist and a doctor, neither a ninja, who is the only Leaf puppeteer and has a knack for poisons. Her favorite food is strawberry mochi, she is seldom seen without her snake puppet Oreo, and has recently taken to devising techniques utilizing some odd quirks she has involving her voice. She is known for being the physically weakest graduate of her class, with pitiful Taijutsu skills, but makes up for it with keen intellect (most of the time). This has caught the attention of powerful figures, good and bad.

>What’s happened so far?
There’s an archive, but to condense and simplify: Yoko was introduced to Team 9, comprised of her, a clumsy Hyuga named Hideaki, and a peaceful Uchiha named Katsurou. Her sensei is the habitual liar, Jun.
Yoko encountered a legendary figure and caught his attention with a poison of her creation.
A joint mission was taken with Team 6, in which Yoko confronted graverobbers, gained insight from animals, and learned her limitations.
After encountering a role-model of hers again, the young kunoichi set to refining the lessons she gleaned from nature on her mission.
Due to a slip of her tongue, Yoko and her team were brought to an indefinite mission in the Land of Wind for a brutal training by Jun while guarding an abandoned outpost. After undergoing mental training to counter Genjutsu, Yoko started learning the methods through which she can increase her small chakra reserves.
Due to another slip of her tongue, Yoko caught a knife to the gut while trying to defend the outpost. While she almost died, an odd quirk of her body managed to save her when she found her blood could carry the effects of consumed items.
Jun, fearing for her safety, sent Yoko back to Konoha. Shortly before she left, the kunoichi was informed of the destruction of Uzushiogakure and the retaliation she would be expected to assist.

Half-expecting another interruption from the bumps on the road, your ears pick up the driver stopping the cart now empty of supplies so you hop out to the road below and are greeted by the sight of the front gate to Konoha. Even three days of rest hasn’t gotten rid of the soreness and fatigue you feel, you’ll be useless for missions, even training will probably be too taxing in this weakened state. Not that it’ll stop you from trying, you’ll be damned if you can’t focus on improving yourself. The sun is dipping below the horizon as the leaves of the village have started changing color giving the whole scene an orange hue and you start walking towards the gate and enter. Still tired from the fact you were given the equivalent of a soldier pill to heal yourself, your feet carry you towards home and you eat a small piece of jerky from the small bag the driver gave you,

Reflecting on the experiences, you shift your feet to emulate the teachings you had during your meditation, letting the realignment of your system bolster your spirit despite the sorry state of your body to the point you can keep up your pace. The pains in your chest are the only indication of strain, but you ignore them like a fake pain from your training and power forward. Reaching your house takes longer than when you were here a month and a half ago. The sun is almost down when you take off your shoes and collapse onto the couch in your house causing a noise from your parent’s bedroom. Deciding it isn’t worth sitting up and making your torso bug you again, you just yell out. “Hey Mom and Dad! I’m ho-” You grunt in pain as a thin lancing ache interrupts your shout.

Mom comes out and smiles before frowning when she looks at you, she looks like she was settling in for bed. “Oh my god, what happened? You were supposed to be gone for much longer.” You curl Oreo around your mouth and neck to muffle your words before she interrupts before you can. “Did you get heat stroke?” Her worried question punctuates her interrogation as she sits next to your head on the couch and starts brushing your hair with her hand.
>>
“No, I was injured defending the outpost.” She puts her other hand to her mouth. “It was only a stab wound, not like I was gutted.” She gasps. “I fixed it! But… something else happened and I was sent back to get it checked out.” Mom’s face softens.

“I told your dad that this would happen when you were only around boys! None of them knew how to take care of it, so that crappy teacher sent you ba-”

You cut her off. “Ew, Mom, stop. No, my blood worked as a painkiller and they were worried I was really sick. So they sent me back to get it researched.” She looks extremely confused, but you just rest your head on her lap and she continues petting your head. “Where’s Dad?”

She lets out a sigh. “His work has been keeping him in the evenings lately, it’s crunch time because people want their crops to be dried and preserved.” Upset by that, you sit up to go to your workshop and drop off the puppet arm from the Sand. Setting it on the table, you think about what you want to do.

>Grab your black book and see if the notes have been updated, then read until you fall asleep
>Do your own tests on your blood
>Work on Oreo to allow him better weather-proofing using what you learned from the arm

The book sits on your worktable, calling to you as the arm hits the table and you drop off Oreo next to it for work later. Sure, you’ve been out working for the past six weeks, but reading is relaxing and there’s probably new stuff in the book if your mentor is keeping pace. It’s still surreal to think that someone like that thinks highly enough of you to take you on as a student even unofficially. But you have to accept that it’s real, and you’re the only one in your class to be on speaking terms with a Sannin. Grabbing the book quickly and clutching it tightly as you rush to your room, the thought crosses your mind to see if Mom made any sweets, but a quick examination leaves you disappointed. A diet of rice, oatmeal, and jerky has made you really crave something different.

Settling in with your plush snake wrapped around you and under the covers, you crack the book. Oddly, the blank section has been relocated to the front and a note in frenzied script stands out. ‘When you return, expect the Hokage to want to speak with you, when asked I want you to tell him that you think you would greatly benefit from learning more about biology and unique techniques. To that end, I have included notes for said subjects and a section dedicated to review. Unfortunately, teaching notes isn’t my forte.’ Greatly confused by the purpose of such a request, you decide just to read the small review on the last iteration of the book. It’s pretty dry and you end up falling asleep in short time, but the comfy bed and stuffed animal make you feel pleasantly soft and the cooler air of Konoha is much easier on you. You never realized how much you missed humidity.

A dream tries to take you back to that old village and the training from the desert, but you find it steering away now to a small room lined with scrolls and a case filled with books, one scroll lays in front of a figure as you observe from a disembodied perspective. You cannot read it, but the designs on the paper make you feel sick to your stomach as they depict large ogres and demons devouring corpses, they seem to move as you stare. Then the figure turns to look at you, its eyes piercing through the candlelight and appearing as bright a blue as the midday sky. Absorbed in the gaze, you find yourself staring at the sky on a grassy field before sinking into a patch of mud and losing any recollection of the dream. The rest of the night is spent in inky darkness.

“Yoyo, wake up, someone’s here to see you.” Mom is whispering but your face is buried in your pillow enough that you can only grunt in response. As you groan you can barely hear a voice you can’t place your finger on remembering whisper to someone else.

“I think this is a terrible idea.” Someone else shushes the voice and you roll over to see what the big deal is. Seeing someone you slightly recall and someone you easily remember the face of, you scramble to sit up and salute at the Third Hokage, the plush hanging off you and your hair a mess.

Quickly jumping to your feet, you feel a twinge of pain from your torso in protest but keep from letting it show. A lock of your feet shoulder-width apart and you’re at attention. The assistant you recognize as Yujiro comments from under his mask. “Nice.” The room is silent for a few ticks before Mom gets that she’s the odd one out and slowly steps out of the room, but the Hokage stops her gently.

“This concerns you too, I’ll have Yujiro explain it to you out in the kitchen so you can take a seat.” Mom nods and the shinobi follows her out, leaving you alone with the Third Hokage. You’re starting to feel sore from standing stiff for so long, but you just bear it and power on to save face. Orochimaru warned you about this, that’s what you were realizing, but you’re still incredibly terrified.

His casual clothes make you feel like he came here before even going to his office, even though he lives at his office. It’s kind of reassuring that you’re not the only one out of uniform, instead in a pair of pajama pants and a loose shirt, your longer hair hanging messily around the plush snake you aren’t willing to break your salute to take off.

The Hokage breaks the silence and lets out a sigh. “Yoko, you don’t have to salute, just get comfortable. You’re not being evaluated, I came to discuss your condition.” Obeying his words like a direct order, you put down your arm and sit on the side of your bed, doing your best to be comfortable. “How are you feeling?”

“Sore, tired, worried. I don’t know what’s going on and nobody else seems to either. I’m very sure that my teacher is keeping a secret from me, and I’m getting a personal visit from the Hokage so that only adds on to that suspicion.” You reply honestly, it’s not like you can keep a secret.

He blinks and takes a seat next to you. “Can you explain to me what’s happening?”

Pondering how to approach it, you speak. “Either my body is changing, or I’ve always been this way. First thing I noticed is that I’m much better at focusing chakra through my mouth and just using my tongue in general than is normal. I’ve created a thread from it, I made a jutsu that exploits it, and my teammate confirmed that I have more chakra points than normal there.” Getting a bit teary-eyed, you go on after thinking about what you thought when you heard that. “And I had a dilute soldier pill a long time ago, then I got hurt, licked my blood, and it turns out I was making my own soldier pill compound in it. More than I ate. That doesn’t even go to the bloodstream I’m told.” You put your head in your hands. “I think I can chalk that up to some drug or poison Jun has been giving me.”
>>
The Third looks sad for some reason, and puts a hand on your shoulder and pats it before moving his arm away. “Do you love this village?”

Very confused now but now very worried now that he’s asked you that, you reply. “Of course I do.”

“Why?”

Puppets are cool from a stylistic point. Plus they're way more ninja than those jerks throwing giant fireballs willy nilly. Yeah they might not be as good in a straight up fight, but they excel at the whole point of actually being a ninja, who really shouldn't be in a straight up fight by definition.
>>
>>2146938

Yeah, that's why Sasori wasn't an S-class missing nin who had killed and stuffed a Kage for bragging rights. Puppets will do just fine if we put in the effort, same as most any other field we consider.

The weakest member of the Akatsuki besides Hidan who lost to Sakura? Sasori was pretty impressive, you have a point there.

There are better options for stealth though too, like poisons, bukijutsu, and genjutsu.
>>
>>2146973
Good thing Yoko already does poisons on her own and Jun was training her in genjutsu, huh? I'm not saying puppets are the be all and end all, but it clearly has its niche with the sneakier aspects of ninjahood, even if almost everyone eschews it for flashy ninjutsu.
>>
>>2146973
Weakest member of the akatsuki could still wreck nearly any individual ninja in the Five Nations. Gotta keep in mind, aspiring to be like a weak god means you still want to be a god.

Owe boy, not another puppets are shit. I feel like your the same uncreative mind saying that in the last few naruto quests. Between our and the QM's ideas we can really make it shine, and like it or not its whats gonna cover for us being normie tier weak physically
>>
>>2146973
Actually, the one who killed someone heavily regarded as one of the strongest Kages to ever live, that transcended humanity, murdered scores of ninja sufficient to earn him a reputation for it, and was supposedly able to wipe out a village singlehandedly. Puppets are a viable tool in this time period (even though you're absolutely right that they can't possibly compete come Ninja War 4 but I don't intend to carry this story to that point so it isn't a huge deal.)
>>
>>2146973
>who lost to Sakura
Nope, he lost to Chiyo because Sakura wasn't competent enough to take him on without Chiyo literally controlling her body for her.
>>
>>2146987

It's always been popular sentiment, so much so that it never even came up in Clan.

I'm okay with puppets not being able to compete in the 4th war, because I don't think that's the intended purpose of puppets. They're probably the epitome of a sneak-oriented ninja's arsenal. Straight up face-to-face combat means they've failed their win condition in some way.

“Because its home. Its where my family is. Where I've made friends. But it just feels...like home.” You rub your arm nervously, worried about if this is some sort of test of conviction. It’s true, even if you aren’t sure it’s the right answer. Shouldn’t it have been something like a sense of duty towards your village? That’s not really why you like this village anyway.

The Hokage smiles. “That’s what I needed to know. Do you mind if I tell you a story from the Second War?” Seemingly picking up on your discomfort, he adds on. “It’s actually one of those that has a good ending, don’t worry.”

It seems like he’s probably going to explain something to you, so you nod and let him start his story. “It was the middle of the war when a patrol outside the village brought in someone claiming to have information crucial to the war effort, so we of course got his story.” He pauses. “The man had supposedly come from Amegakure, and was part of the team responsible for making Hanzo who he is, and seeing the destruction and tyranny he had wrought the man had felt a need to escape the violence. When he came to us he revealed a critical weakness in the Salamander’s defenses and simply wished to live a life of peace and quiet in exchange.” The Third grimaces and clenches his fists a little.

“That wasn’t enough to make it worth our while though, we knew of this weakness already, so an advisor of mine came up with another solution. He was to use his knowledge to benefit the Leaf, helping create poisons and such for ANBU at a lower price and higher quality. Of course he agreed, but the conditions other than that were steep. His income was to stay fixed at a low point so as to avoid him creating things that could harm the Leaf, the man would be forced to keep all knowledge of this secret, and should he ever go back on his word Anbu was tasked with silencing him.” It doesn’t look like he’s enjoying telling this story.

“But it never came to that. That man was your father, and it pains me to have to be the one to tell you this Yoko.”

Shocked at what you’re hearing, you try to think of what this means. Dad isn’t from Konoha, that’s… not too bad, but everything else makes you feel extremely conflicted. Does this mean Dad didn’t have a job? His long hours could have been him working with ANBU, and this explained the conversation you overheard. He was part of the team that made Hanzo the Salamander into the monster he is? But he couldn’t have been that old when that happened, maybe even younger than you. The village was keeping your family from being well-off...just because Dad could supposedly have made problems if he tried!

This isn’t fair! Dad is the best, he could have been rich with his skills but instead he’s being intentionally held down by the village! “What does this have to do with my condition?” Have you been kept down too? Were you going against something trying to be a shinobi?

The Hokage lets out a sigh. “I never wanted this, but you’re partially the reason we couldn’t take any chances. He was provided with enough to live happily, nothing more or less, so that he couldn’t use what he knew to make someone like Hanzo again. When news came back concerning your condition, he was taken in for questioning.” He looks at you and it doesn’t do much to assuage your feelings. “You need to understand just how devastating your father could be if he were given a reason and the means. He was a part of a family of scientists and chemists called the Dokute. The last time the Dokute were involved directly in a conflict, everyone who fought died, as well as everyone they were related to. They were known for exterminating whole groups of people in single battles, and your father was considered a prodigy when it came to their specialty.”

Fully incensed, you clench your fists. “Where is he? Don’t hurt him.”

“He came along willingly and is cooperating, we’re all very worried about you and no expense is being spared to try and figure out what happened. You’re a member of the Leaf village, Yoko, we take care of our own and your family has been invaluable and upstanding in this village.” The Third Hokage sounds like he’s telling the truth, but you have something else you need to know.

“Is this why we’re poor? Why would you do that?” You’re just so confused and conflicted that you can’t really bring to bear any more anger.

This causes him to look completely crushed. “I didn’t want to, but taking even the slightest risk… the alternative was taking your father from you, faking his death, but that would have been far too cruel. Growing up without much to go around isn’t bad compared to losing a parent, and there are far too many people who would agree already.”

This… it’s confusing, you can’t wrap your head around it easily. “What does this mean? A-am I like Hanzo?” Grabbing the plush around your neck for comfort, you try to push out what that would mean. Someone like him killed so many leaf ninja, and your Dad was a part of that, and you might be like him.

“No, you’re still a part of the village, nothing has changed. But I’ve taken steps to repay Hiro’s loyalty and make sure you’re well taken care of so that you don’t end up getting hurt. There has been much discussion about where you ought to be positioned in the gap without your team too, and I’m very willing to listen to you about it. You can take time off if you need it.” Okay, he definitely does feel bad about this, he’s making that very clear.

We're technically allowed to fight and die for our village now. We should have been told this right away.
Let's get the full story from Dad as well, see if it all matches. Trust but verify. After... I guess we need to find out what is wrong with our blood. This could be an incredible tool, but we have to understand it first. If we can make poison blood by ingesting or injecting it, we may never want for materials again!

Also keep in mind Oro-sensei's suggestion if we can work it in somewhere.

You can’t find it in you to be as biting as something like this probably deserves, you’re barely sure you can think straight, and you manage to hold back the distress you’re feeling. “I just… I want to know what’s happening, take me to him.” Right now you aren’t even sure this is the truth, you want to hear it from Dad. The Hokage nods and stands up, gesturing for you to follow. He seems to get that nothing he could tell you at this point would make you feel much better. When he exits your room, you get back into the civilian clothes you wore last time, the headband seeming a bit less shiny at this point, and follow.

Yujiro seems to be waiting and Mom looks like she’s seen a ghost, just staring at the counter as she leans against it, still smiling but more in the manner that she looks like she’s going to snap any moment. When she sees you, she looks up and tries to seem as happy as she normally is. “I’m going to make a nice, big dinner for when you two get home to celebrate your father’s promotion.” She gets out a large pan from a cabinet and Yujiro chimes in.

“It’s just a pay increase, not a prom-OW FUCK.” Mom throws a wooden ladle at the assistant, catching him off-guard and smacking him in the head with the thick handle. He nurses his head and files in next to the Hokage and you. “Honestly, I was expecting tears, so I’m pleasantly surprised.” The Hokage gives him a quick slap on the back of the head causing the younger man to glare.

The walk through the village seems kind of lackluster, the windy autumn air buffeting you as the Hokage decides to speak. “Yoko, I was actually going to assign you a person to work under when you’re feeling up to it, but after consulting and finding that there’s actually a large number of people who would love to work with you and can likely handle your condition, I’d like to leave the choice to you.” He looks forward and stares at someone who walks past in order to stop what was seeming to be an enthusiastic greeting. “As your teacher will be training the rest of your team for next year’s Chunin Exams, I’d say it’s only fair to let you set your own schedule if you want to keep up. Have you been thinking about what you want to do?”

You’ve been worried about this too, that you’ll fall behind in your goal to be the best ninja ever, do you even still want to do that? It only takes you a second to decide that you will, you’re not going to give up, never.

”I want to develop a style all my own and learn about biology so maybe I can get a handle on… whatever this is.” You recall what Orochimaru told you to say… and you actually do want that. It would help you with a lot, and making something all your own will ensure nobody has ever seen your style before. It’s not that you’d be able to spend more time with him if your suspicion of what this means is correct. Not at all.

The Hokage looks at you and nods. “One of the prospective mentors actually mentioned wanting to teach the same, so that works out. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with who it is, but you should get your rest first.” ...now you’re feeling a little bit better knowing what’s in store. If you’re learning from Orochimaru you might even be able to get even closer to your goal… nothing to do with a crush, Sawako’s so stupid. Who wouldn’t want to learn from someone who studied under the God of Shinobi and is notoriously intelligent? Lost in thought, you barely notice as you reach a door in an alley and Yojiro opens the door.

Inside is a large lab filled with all sorts of machines for distilling, mixing, boiling, and grinding in what you have to assume are industrial quantities, and some other things such as centrifuges and machines specifically meant to observe the changes in blood. You can recognize them from the hospital. Among them is Dad being watched over by a man in a flak jacket with white hair. Only he seems to realize your arrival as Dad goes on talking. “-and I’m so proud, if you ever have kids you’ll get it, but when they start outstripping you on your job, that’s when it’s fun.” They seemed to be having a rather pleasant conversation if the man’s expression is any indication, even though he’s way younger than Dad.

Yojiro stands and sighs. “Sakumo, you were just supposed to watch him, he’s focusing on his work.”

The other man, Sakumo you guess, puts his hands up. “He was the one who wanted to talk, and nothing went wrong so obviously that wasn’t too bad.”

Dad turns to look at whoever arrived as he talks. “It’s boring here, it’s not like there’s much I can do other than wai-” He looks at you with wide eyes. Being honest, he looks terrible, like he didn’t get a wink of sleep while you were gone. But now he’s obviously shocked at something about you. Or he’s waiting for something? It’s too hard to read him as anything other than tired.

The fact he had to do something about that shows the Chunin Exam tournament section doesn't properly support proper ninja skills. No wonder most ninja prefer flashy jutsu, the Hidden Village system practically denies the use of sneaky skills.
Notice how utterly useless genjutsu is in top-tier fights unless you have hax eye powers?
>>2147824
But then they know you're in the ground. The whole point of sneaky ninjas and using puppets is that they shouldn't have much of an idea you're around or where you're at
>>2147779
>Rush to give him a hug
Gotta show him everything's okay with our actions.
>>
>>2147928
Bro chakra strings. expand then away from the point we actualy are. We can also use smoke bomb then go underground and use extend our chakra strings so we can move. There is a jutsu thay allows a user to swin on the earth.

Besides if we are going support i can't think nothing better to be our second release then earth. Since we already have water as our main.
>>
>>2147940
I agree with our second release being earth if we ever get the choice.
>>
>>2147940
Fuck, chakra strings are actually super useful in a straight fight. Could probably rip weapons out of enemies hands, anchor one of their feet the ground to fuck with them, there's a lot we can do.
>>
Running to your dad, you wrap your arms around him and ignore the pain in your side as he lightly returns it. “Are you okay?” He looks so terrible, and you’re worried because if you’re not feeling well then maybe he isn’t either.

“Yeah, I came here on my own.”

“That’s not what I asked, Dad.” You knew that, but he looks like he’s sick or something.

“Mhm, just been working a lot, but I think I at least have an idea of what this is. You’re okay too, right?” He pulls back and looks at your face. It looks like he’s been crying, but you don’t know why, so you nod even though you really are anything but okay. “This is all my fault, I should have…”

The Hokage steps forward. “It’s okay Hiro, you can take your time.” The reassurance causes Dad to pause and take a deep breath.

You know he has to be stressed out, but you need to know some things. “Dad, is all this true?” You just woke up and the Hokage himself was telling you that Dad’s whole life story was a lie and he belonged to a family from Amegakure and… it’s just all too unbelievable. You know Dad didn’t like talking about his side of the family but you didn’t imagine this was why.

He puts a hand to his face to cover half of it as he leans on the table. “Yes… and I was wrong to keep it from you, but let me explain if I can.” Dad wipes his face and looks you in the eyes. “I changed my name, did all of this so I could just forget everything they did to me and made me do… sweetie I made things that killed people, and even then I wasn’t giving enough to the cause. So I ran. I stole something that I really shouldn’t have used to get away, and now you’re the one paying for it. It’s my fault.”

Sakumo keeps his expression but cuts in. “What was it?”

Dad scowls at the memory. “It was an experimental medicine that was made to allow people to metabolize and replicate compounds, but it didn’t really do that, it was made using some rare ingredients and old recipes. They didn’t go well with the chemicals the Dokute were used to and it would cause facial paralysis. So I disguised myself as a trader and left. When it wore off, I thought that was that.” His expression casts downwards. “It came with a cost, I knew that, I was always going to be in at least a little pain from the side effects. But… it might have actually worked, just down the line. That’s all I can think of that would explain it.” Dad slams a hand on the desk, then shakes it out without changing expressions. “It’s my fault.”

Well it will allow us to look in a lot of stuff for inspiration. Since we already have Oreo that is a sneak and restrain puppet you think we should go for a more bulkier one? Like a lion?

I think anons were sugesting for us to go with a chimera theme. One puppet is a goat the other is a lion. And we already have Oreo to be the snake tail.
>>
>>2148141
Yea, it can definitely affect our puppetry, like the person above said. All of our breakthroughs so far that we could have pursued was inspiration from biological beings.
>>

>snake puppet

>>
>>2148202
>Add in the lion being a way so she can enter and be protected

Mecha chimera puppet. But that might be way to much not to mention expensive.
>>
Think we could replicate something like Tsunade's super strength technique with enough knowledge of biology and charka strings?
>>
>>2148212
It'd be a long term goal, something we don't fully finish until we're jonin or equivalent. We have time to build up the proper funding.
>>
>>2148224
Unlikely. Unless we go the kinjutsu route and start to make puppets out of animals bodies. Don't know if that would work thought or if it's even allowed.

Puppets work more with a combination of sealling and gadgets. Might be worthy to look into sealli g so we can seal some jutsus in a scrol and have our puppet release it as a certain moment.

Could even put one at the lion or the goat puppet mouth and have a sealed fire jutsu in the scroll so the puppet can spit fire.
>>
>>2148256
its possible to use jutsu durectly through a puppet, the sand figured out how
>>
>>2148236
True besides gives us a oportunity to be more creative with the puppets gadgets.

>>2148209
Sasori used sealling tags in his puppet arm that allowed it to spam more and more arms imagine that but with mini bird puppets with razor sharp beaks/wings
>>
>>2148270
i was thinking of controlling the entire swarm by stringing them on chakra strings like beads. imagine 70000 bird puppets with razor sharp poisoned wings
>>
>>2148326
I think it would be more cost effective to just use poisoned sebon in a sealled scroll. Besides our girl doesn't have that chakra control yet and only Sasori was heard of controlling more then 100 puppets.
>>

That sounds horrifically inefficient, as well as fucking expensive.

Giving Dad another hug, he seems surprised. “You couldn’t have known, and I’m going to be okay right?”

“You should be, I think this is just something nobody noticed until now, but you’re going to have to be careful. Assuming this works as intended, your blood will steadily increase concentration the more of a compound you consume, but you might not feel the effects. Going off what your teacher said, this should even work if you consume the compound your body produces.” You feel a drop of water hit your shoulder. “It could hurt someone really easily, and I’m not sure how much is different from normal, so be careful. Please?”

You understand the concept, even if you don’t understand how it works. “I will.” This… it could very easily solve your supply problem if you need medicine or edible compounds. Maybe it explains the whole thing with your mouth if you metabolize things differently? It’s all too confusing right now.

Dad lets go and has to push you away from him so you let go. “I think I’ll stay here for a bit, just to go over some things. I’ll be home for dinner.” He smiles glumly as he goes back to looking at his work and Sakumo stands by him.

Yojiro goes to open the door for the Hokage, but stops. “Hey egghead, is this gonna follow your family down the line or is it just a one-off deal?” It doesn’t take long for you to understand what he’s sussing out. “Because a bunch of kiddies that can make drugs with their blood is gonna be a bitch and a half to deal with if that’s how it is.” Okay… that’s more understandable. You were really worried about what he was implying there.

Coughing in surprise, Dad regains control of his voice. “I don’t know, suppose it’s possible. The whole point of the formula was to make a line to produce rare ingredients and poisons, whole thing was inhumane.” He glares at Yojiro and the Hokage nods.

“Very. Thank you for all your help, Hiro.” He seems calm, even though his eyes look kind of red. “Yoko, when you want to see your teacher you can meet him at my office. Focus on feeling better, okay?” The two start to walk out and you salute half-heartedly.

I'll change my vote from exchanging coins to going to the library to research our family
>>
>>2148765
Okay, then that is what we will pick up with on Monday!
>>
>>2148772
>only monday

Ah man...guess that is fine.
>>
Just letting everyone know that we should pace ourselves during training. We don't need to work ourselves to exhaustion again.
>>
>>2148613
>>Go home and grab those coins to see about exchanging them.
>>
>>2148957
We can study sealling pretty easily during our resring time. Sealling is just coating special paint with your chakra anyways.
>>
>>2149450

We gotta rest and relax, too.
>>
So I'm now a whole lot more worried about why we were beat up at the beginning of this quest. Dad's cover might be compromised, we might be compromised, MOM MIGHT BE COMPROMISED!

Also being able to turn Oreo in to a small wooden rod is really cool. If we master that we could have a small harmless puppet suddenly turn in to a massive beast when it is way too late to dodge. We could even go super cheap and have just a stick that turns in to a giant fucking log right over people's heads.
>>
>>2149452
Sealling is basicaly shodo (where an ink-dipped brush is used artistically to create Chinese kanji and Japanese kana characters) it doesn't have mich physical stress and it may be quite relaxing. Also i guess it would help with chakra c9ntrol
>>
So if we can make drugs out of our blood, how would that affect summoning and other blood related jutsus
>>
>>2150074
I think it depends on whether the blood is about the substance or the symbology of sacrifice.
>>
>>2147056
>Katsu is related to Fugaku

wait can this be Sasuke's dad?
>>
>>2150405
Probably a weird uncle nobody talks about
Speaking of clans, for all our hatred of clans we may accidently start one
>>
>>2150413
If we do, were stockpiling knowledge on how to deal with all the other clans techniques and how to defeat them. It already seems like our ancestors have a similar history. Not saying I want to wipe them all out just.. ya know. In case-ys.
>>
>>2150405
Also, if it is his father than oh man are we fucked when rhe chunin exams come by
Minato would exist and we aren't very good at 1v1s
>>
>>2150413
I wonder if Katsu will be Sinshui's father.

>>2150469
Sensei said that Kushina (Naruto's mom) had just entered the academy and Minato went to the academy with her. So No Minato in the exams for at least 2 or 3 years.
>>
Oh for our possible new puppets i was thinking in one to mimic a human or at least a humanoid puppet to make easier to use the trabsformation to jutsu and have it mimic as Yoko.

If we want to keep our chimera combination (snake, goat and lion) i suggest make the goat puppet humanoid like a goat beastman or if we want to be edgy like a baphomet. Would also make it have wings and combine it in the chimera final form
>>
>Lion for offense
>Goat for defense
>Snake for poison sneak attacks
>Combine for chimera zord shenanigans

I'm actually liking where this is going. Now we just need names for the lion and goat.

inb4 lion is named Jelly based on Jiraya and the goat is named ???? after Tsunade.
>>
>>2150608
the goat is called miltank. To honor tsunade massuve mounts.
>>
>>2149450
Yoko finds Sealing boring, which in contrast to her absolutely bonkers progression in Ninjutsu and Poisons, makes it harder to see gains as training sessions will be shorter. (Not discrediting Sealing as an idea because it is extremely useful, just saying it will be rest in the same way reading a dictionary is rest)

>>2150074
Drinking alcohol before summoning yields better rates for animals summoned /s

>>2150405
Fugaku is Sasuke's dad.

>>2150517
This man has the right of it.
>>
>>2150608

Snake is Oreo, Lion is Honey, Goat is Milk.
>>
>>2150930
Sealing is boring. But it would be the less stressfull trainning we could do in our current condition. Besides sealing jutsu and objects in a scroll seem to be the basic os sealling so just learning that and putting it at the puppets would be a good combo.

Although now i want to look at that arm and start to work in a goat man puppet.
>>
>>2151005
Oh god yes! I loved it!! Could even give the goat the japanese name for milk, which is Ginyu.
>>
Well if we make a lion puppet what would be its main functions?
>>
>>2151042
Offense. Claws in his paws as well as saw on his mouth to make is like teeths. His main fuction would be a attack puppet with detachable, We can even use his torso as a capture cage for a enemy shinobi. Leaving the cage a option for when we want to get inside and be protected in the mecha chimera form
>>
Could also make the lion tail be replaced by a tail composed of sharp blades. Who can be detached and lauched and give space to combine Oreo in the chimera form
>>
And instead of a vaporizer to shoot poison we can make use of fire sealed in a scroll and make it release a flame jutsu from his mouth. I would vote for the dragon fire jutsu.
>>
>>2151090
I'm sure we can make a mechanical equivalent without needing to use seals. Except to maybe fireproof the fuel tank.
>>
>>2151104
More worried that using a flaming agent once it pours out of the mouth it might get in the puppets wood. But i guess we can easily solve this with a retractable metal spit to guida the flamed material

>>
>>2151171
I think a corrosive acid cloud would fit Yoko better.
>>
>>2151602
Agreed.
>>
>>2151602
Why not a acid cloud from the goat and a flame from the lion? I will be sincere i'm pushong the flame bit more because the chimera are said to have fire breath.

Acid deployement or another chemical concoction can be done. Wonder how enemies would react to a strong poison that cause skin irritation
>>
>>2151456
Yoko is a cutie. To think she will cause the death of thousand shinobi's with her poisons.
>>
Okay
If we mix the trapping puppet idea with the lion, what would the goat puppet do?
Maybe super tough hyper wood for shock absorption?
>>
>>2152894
Goat can be a defense/bait puppet. Make it with a goat head, a humanoid torso and goat legs.
>>
>>2152987
Ok
So here's somethings to consider
Mobility options
I suggest wings on the goat for versitile movement
Not sure what to suggest with the lion, but all fours would be kind of a dumb thing to do
Purpose and efficency
Oreo is made to be quick and easy to fix while doing the job of restraining and incapactating victims
What would the Goat be designed for?
I suggest durability and being able to take a lot of hits, but what would its general purpose be?
Body blocking?
If the lions purpose is attacking and capture, what is the goat suppossed to do?
Their is also the problem of where are we gonna get the money to make the lion and goat?
Speaking of money i suggest trying to drive that one clan who owns a poison shop, forgot their name, out of buisness

We can start researching chakra shield for defense puppet. Or just use it as a defense/immobilization puppet.

We start saving money from misions and beging researching about puppet. For now we seem to be focusing more in biology then our use of puppets
>>
I think a larger animal, a goat seems appropriate mostly to be very durable and lock down and help us in a battle of attrition against someone, to keep them off us. Perhaps smears with a contact poison on its horns? Maybe it can move by jumping, leaping from place to place like a mountain goat, and it could give it a charge attack and the speed to keep up with a shinobi. Yea and maybe room for something else? If its metallic a organic eating acid would be interesting, like anons have said. Might even work with the vaporizer, freeing up us to get something better for oreo.
>>
>>2156223
We can either make the horns into curved blades, like the sickle from a kusarigama. We can even ass wings to it by using a special cloth to help the puppet develop strenght for a tackle movement.

We can even make the goat body more serpent like. Just like pic related. Also Sasori's blades, the ones he had on his back can work as a frame for the wings, so if the wings are burned we could used it as improvised blades
>>
>>2156223
Organic acid mist sounds excellent, but the problem is that having a metallic puppet would likely raise the price of the materials considerably. Maybe it should have chains or something that could be used to wrap around enemy limbs (like say binding an arm to keep them from using hand signs). Unlike Oreo, if we go with a metal chassis then it would have sheer weight on it's side, which would be much harder to get out of, especially if the chains were spiked and poisoned with something to sap strength or disrupt chakra flow.
>>
>>2156887
Sickle horns with chains attaching it allowing for grappling a enemy then?
>>
>>2156887
Your right, we'll probably need to be selective on where the reinforced metal parts are, but we still need to exchange those coins and I believe we have the earnings from our mission before last. I'd just like to get some time working on puppets before we need to run out of the village, learning about things irrelevant to them.
>>
>>2156948
And we still have that puppet arm to dissect/study
>>
Just brainstorming ideas for a goat puppet; feel free to point out shitty ones:

Metal construction for high durability
Organic acid mister for acid breath that doesn't affect its metallic construction
Chains used to bind enemies; spiked and poisoned with strength sapping or chakra disrupting poison
Electrical battery/generator that can run a current through the chains, effectively turning them into taser chains
Short-range noisemaker that can attack concentration by resonating with the inner ear/neural tissue a la Dosu
Integrated launchers built into the back or sides that can launch payloads such as poison smoke bombs, explosive tags, or flashbangs for ranged pressure
Smaller senbon launcher that's mostly for simple ranged application of poisons or medicines

...And I'm out of ideas.

Walking out of the lab after giving Dad one last hug, you decide that a much less intense day would probably be helpful to you, so the library is a good idea. And this whole thing has you wondering what the family you never knew about is all about. The Third made them seem like horrible monsters that would destroy entire swaths of people on whims, killing indiscriminately, and they managed to stitch together the monster that killed everyone but the Sannin. Your mind wanders to how your Dad talked about them for any differences.

He mentioned a cause that he wasn’t contributing enough to despite killing people. That still feels… wrong. Dad has never been violent, he’s hardly ever yelled before, you only heard it once and that was when you were going to mix something explosive when you were a kid. Him killing people just seems off, and apparently he’s making poisons for ANBU? It’s not like you can judge but he just seemed so pure in a sense, just the chemist who makes preservatives and medical supplies, and now that’s gone. As you walk the street to the library, you notice the thinning amount of people out and about. That’s okay, you’re used to being alone, and most of your friends aren’t even in the town. You bet Takuya is on a mission too.

The quiet building is a bastion in a sense, and you take it gladly, rushing for books on the families of Amegakure and finding large amounts of texts. It looks rather daunting as you look at the atlas-sized tomes, and you have to make multiple trips to carry them all to a table for inspection. Most of the book is small stubs on each family and descriptions of techniques they employ, vague and unhelpful. The stubs on Dokute make you more than a little scared, as the descriptions are anything but vague.

‘Contact causes those attacked to slowly wither away, becoming husks and eventually dying of cardiac arrest. Symptoms vary from weeping sores, pus-filled eyes, rotting gums, nerve damage, and in many cases a complete lack of outward symptoms. Time taken for the death ranges from a few hours to a few years. After death, family members of the deceased start to show similar symptoms and if left untreated this will cause a domino effect (see individual report 5c).’ Swallowing a lump in your throat, the implications of this make you shiver. If someone were to be killed this way, their children, brothers, sisters, they’d all be in danger of death too. It’s way too far, it kills innocent people for no reason, but you can easily see the purpose of such a technique.

It’s made to kill other families. That must be how the Dokute gained prevalence in Amegakure. You know why Dad must have left now, this is wrong, death on this scale is wrong...right? The more you mull it over, the more you realize how useful this could be in destroying the morale of an enemy. And if you have an antidote, you could force entire wars to a close...but why didn’t the Dokute do that? There must be something missing from this.

You close the book and practically jump out of your skin, sitting across the table and reading one of the books you picked is a familiar face.

I think it would be easier if we dissected the puppet in parts.
So we can either figure the puppet limits, if it has one, the weapons in it and etc...

Something like:
Head: Mouth used to launche weapinry, maybe a repeater of poison sebons of anotger vaporizer to deliver acid to the enemy; add in horns like a ram making it like a blade, maybe even make possible to adjuat the blade angles
Torso: blades to slash at a enemy, maybe ass double sebon launchers as the base of the puppet neck, add in a motor to provide a chain and make a eletricic chain teaser
legs (×4):
Tail: detachable tail to combine Oreo, maybe make the tail like a metal whip with a hook at the tip. Both to movlbility and to surprise a enemy. Maybe make this tail whip pluged with the eletric motor
>>

What should you do? You’re just having a relaxing time in the library and this happens, what do you do? What do you normally do when someone sits by you in the library...well the answer is move somewhere else but that’s no good. Oh no, you’re going to actually have to try to talk without just lapsing into conversation about work. “It’s interesting, right? Completely terrible, but fascinating.”

He looks up at you and so you try to appear like you were busy as well, that way he’s not aware you were staring at him for a solid minute. You’re just hoping looking like you were checking the clock actually does that, and a long silence stays as he looks at you. “It is. There’s a lot to be taken from this sort of ability for use outside of the narrower aspects of warfare, I’d assume. Not a lot of useful info here though, obviously missing a crucial part.” Wait...he brought it around to work in a way...is that how he goes about talking to people too or something? Does he just research all day or something, would make sense you guess.

“Otherwise they would have been instrumental in the Second War. Which they weren’t save for one person they created.” You finish his thought.

“Exactly.” Orochimaru smiles softly, it’s surprisingly pleasant for someone with such horrible rumors, so it just goes further to confirming that those are just rumors from kids. “What intrigues me is what they were supposedly working on in the field of genetics.”

You’re familiar with the concept, but unfortunately they don’t make a large deal of it in school, and there’s still a lot unknown. “You’re referring to me, right? What they wanted to do was slavery, worse than that really.” The thought that if your Dad hadn’t left, you might have been born for the purpose of harvesting ingredients, it’s viscerally terrifying.

His smile doesn’t fade. “We’re on the same page, but what they did is still incredibly impressive. Imagine parents being able to choose what abilities their children have, or just ensuring that no diseases occur. It would improve so many lives if turned towards a different goal.” You...guess you never thought about that in the past few hours.

“I think we’re getting to the old ‘all medicines are just poisons in more reasonable amounts’ point.”

He shrugs. “Maybe, but that doesn’t make the medicine any less viable.” Orochimaru puts down the book and looks at the one you’re holding. “You’re doing okay with this?” The question seems sort of loaded, but he doesn’t appear to mean any harm by it.

“I’m still processing it.”

That’s probably not enough for a conversation, maybe you should give him a bit more to work with? “Apparently if I eat more of something, it increases the concentration in my blood so I have to be careful. I’m not even sure why it’s just stuff I eat, wouldn’t it be what I inject?” He likes to explain things, that’s something you need explained.

He seems to be thinking for a moment, then looks at you. “It could be a unique sort of metabolism that changes the function of an organ in your body, but the only way to know for sure would be extensive testing.” Why are you staring at him so much? It’s probably just because you’re interested in what he’s saying.

“Well, that might have something to do with another thing I figured out. I have 365 tenketsu according to my Hyuga teammate. Four extra ones in my mouth.” You produce the sketch Hideaki made and Orochimaru’s eyes go wide. He studies it intensely and his hair falls over one of his eyes but he continues on. How is he not bothered by that? It’s bothering you.

The Sannin looks up and holds the paper next to you, then puts it down. “Interesting, that could explain it in that your body is performing some sort of transformation using those points as a focus, likely some element of a Yin Release. It would explain the lack of physical energy not making you completely normal in terms of chakra as well… but that’s simply theory. If it were true, and this is not a simple biological function but a true ability, you could theoretically alter chemical composition of blood outside your body with this method as well, or simply change your blood’s properties without eating anything. Of course if it was a biological function there are ways to go about enhancing that… similar to what certain members of Kirigakure clans are known to do… there is room to change.” He launches into a long-winded explanation of muttering and talking to himself before recalling you’re in the room as well. “Sorry, it was rude to leave you out.”

You shake your head. “No, that all makes sense, but I think the extra chakra points can explain why my Thread-Spitting Technique is different from normal Chakra Threads. It’s sticky, so maybe those tenketsu automatically have different properties. Could you tell that way?”

Orochimaru is rapt with what you’re saying. “Probably, it’s very fortunate you gained that information. Would you please show me?”

Oh. Oh no.

Turning a bit red, you look away nervously. “It’s kind of gross…” Even as you say that, the two movements form in your mouth, practicing for it. Orochimaru just continues watching, seemingly uncaring for your comment, so you get on with it and run your tongue around the inside of your mouth, finding this much easier than last time you used it. Then you spit at your hands and the thread that comes out looks more like a braided rope than a cord, the tip of it sticking to your hand in a splatter and the other end coming from your tongue as it hangs out.

Orochimaru doesn’t recoil at all, instead moving your hand so he can get a closer look and touching the thread. You only get more nervous with how closely he’s observing it. “Huh, it appears that the end of this is some sort of…” He puts his fingers to his mouth and licks it, making you recoil a bit at his lack of care that he’s licking something that came out of your mouth. “Syrup, you’re definitely either altering your saliva with your chakra or creating this with your chakra. Knowing your blood… I lean to the former, and in turn the explanation involving Yin Release, even though you have an affinity for Water which would also…”

You slurp up the thread and look at him. “How did you know I had an affinity for Water?” You don’t think you’ve told anyone yet.

“It’s a dead giveaway when you just leave a wet piece of chakra paper in your workshop.” That just opens more questions.

“Why were you in my house?”

He shrugs. “I had to write in the book and check it somehow.” You thought it was some sort of jutsu that let him see what you wrote and write his own notes… oh no he was in your bedroom then. This is really awkward… “Assigned to watch you anyways after all that stuff with the missing-nin anyways.” That kind of makes it better but you’re still really embarrassed now. Everyone’s saying you talk in your sleep…

“Okay, so then what. You think I can change my blood on my own?” Move past it Yoko, move past it and don’t think about it.

Orochimaru wipes his hand on the table and snaps his fingers to test the viscosity. You know that trick when it comes to dried adhesives. It’s pretty loud too. “I think so, but it would take quite a few unique handseals, a lot of work, and likely some very intensive training to understand how your chakra flows.” Someone shushes him before he snaps again.

”Can we go over that? I want to get as much in as I can while my team is away.” Trying to push a particularly uncomfortable thought out of your head, especially while Orochimaru is sitting right in front of you, you pat Oreo on the head to calm yourself down.

Orochimaru’s eyes are drawn to the puppet and he leans forwards. “Yes. But there has been something that’s been bothering me.” Oh no, he’s staring. “Your puppet isn’t even painted like the real thing, it’s just wood. It’d benefit from a coat to keep it from getting all worn out, and making it look like a real snake will be helpful down the road.” Y-you’re confused. Then he taps the chin of the puppet and you feel almost intensely jealous of an inanimate object. Why is it more important that Oreo look like a real snake?

“I don’t really have paint, and it’s expensive if I want to make it look real.” If Takuya was in town you could have talked to him about paint. It’d probably make Orochimaru happy.

“Well then I’ll pay for some in exchange for a little work outside what I’d normally ask, maybe give you a hand with it, but there is what I’d need you to do.” His smile makes it seem like he’s playing at something but it also seems like he’s being genuine enough to trust. It’s a hard balance to strike and he ends up actually looking a bit nervous. “It’s really not even that important, I’ll help you with this anyway, but can you see about getting anything from your father on what he took that caused all this? If you can’t that’s fine.”

Why is he so nervous? He’s asking you politely to try to get an answer and not saying he’ll be mad if you don’t get it. Of course, he’d probably be disappointed, but you don’t have to try right away. So you nod. You’ll think about it. Dad probably wouldn’t like being asked but maybe you can work around it. You’d kind of like to know too in case something goes wrong with it.

Standing up and picking up the books, Orochimaru nods as well. “Well then come with me, it’s grocery day too so it’s no big deal.” Putting the books back, you contemplate the offer.

You jump up from your chair and start helping with the books, thinking about something you read in some novel a while ago and blushing subtly while you put the ones on the lower shelves back. “Sure! But why does Oreo have to look real?” Now you’re actually a bit envious of how much attention your companion is getting as Orochimaru inspects him.

“It’s better as a disguise in the situation where I use Summoning. You would be able to get in a more devastating hit while they’re distracted by the amount of snakes.” His strategic thinking even on a day off is impressive and you follow him out of the library. He seems unreasonably calm at most times whenever you look up, he just seems serene. It’s different than most people where they have reactions to things going on around them.

“That makes sense.” Dimly you think about how cool a Summoning animal would be if you had one. Like if you could summon snakes and then have just a bunch of snakes on you at all times. That would be awesome.

“When you recover we’ll probably be sent on a few missions to Yugakure in retaliation for what they did to our allies, I have an inkling it will be espionage so keep that in mind.” That sounds...perfect for you. You do really well at blending in most of the time and lying isn’t hard.

It’s when Orochimaru stops by a shop selling wood paints meant for carpenters that you have a few moments of doubt. Oreo’s bare appearance is a marker for you. It means you’re still learning, that you were a student and so painting meant you were a full puppeteer, same idea behind not knowing your Nature. But now you’re taking that step and you need to pick out some colors based on an actual snake.
>>
The first one that comes to mind is a corn snake you saw in a book once that has white and orange that just stuck out as being adorable to you. It wouldn’t do you any favors in combat, but it’s not like Oreo doesn’t already sort of stand out in most environments with no paint. And it would just look so cute. It’s simple to paint as well.

Another idea is more intimidating, just a brownish green with scales like a python. It would be suitably stealthy and fit with a more scary image, probably look real enough to make people think that an actual snake has buzz-saw teeth. Of course, it looks kind of ugly, and it’s so boring.

Coming to another idea when you pass black and white paint to see they’re on sale, you recall another captive python in a book that was white with black whorls, and it looked really pretty. It actually had a bit of camo to it as well, and it would go with anything you wear. A bit harder to paint...but Orochimaru said he’d help and the thought of his hand guiding the brush for you makes you blush and shake your head. That’s a good option.

Finally, you just see a normal gray and realize that a gray and black stripe would look...okay you guess. Maybe a bit more camo, just as hard to paint.

Taking the two paints that are on sale, black and white, you walk back to Orochimaru as he picks out a few brushes. “These ones were the least expensive, and I have something in mind for them.” You quickly describe the pattern you’re thinking about for him and he smiles as he purchases the supplies. For some reason he seems more than a little pleased with your choice, like it’s somehow nostalgic.

“You know, white snakes represent fortune and rebirth.” He takes the bag and carries it in the crook of his arm while you follow. He seems a bit sad as well, so you decide that leading him somewhere better to paint in the sun would be better. Pointing out a group of tables near a food stall in the market, you take a seat.

Something is sort of bugging you. “Do you think white snakes know that?” You make the joke kind of as just that, but it’s also to take the sad edge off the thought. Deciding to pay for the food, you come back to him holding back a grin while you put the small plate of dumplings in front of him. He paid for the paints so this is the least you can do. “What?”

He actually laughs. “I guess you are kind of right, it’s just a symbol, but symbols are good for inspiration Yoko.” The way he says your name makes you shift a little bit, so you just dig into your food. It’s so much better than the rice, the filling of the dumpling definitely pork. You forgot what pork tasted like. It’s delicious.

Taking a moment to breathe, you ask another question. “So is experience, my inspiration for my new jutsu was a snake, but not because it was a symbol or anything.” He frowns in response and you’re worried for a moment.

“There is a limit to what simple observation can get you.”

You feel like you might be able to know about this, it doesn’t seem like Orochimaru has a lot of perspective outside of work and research. “Maybe you just need to try some new things? Have you ever done any research into Crusher Rats? Or...I have some brain fungus to test out. I went fishing for the first time on a mission, that gave me some food for thought.”

It looks like he’s going to yell at you and you can feel your heart breaking before he looks down and frowns. Maybe you said something that hit home. “I suppose that’s true. Maybe I’ll look into some things that aren’t in my current routine. Still, learning how to interpret the world is important.” Well now he just looks sad.

“Are you okay?” The question comes out and he looks up.

“Hmm? Oh. Yeah, just thinking.” Okay, you’re not falling for that, but you do need to cheer him up. So you throw some threads at Oreo on your neck and start jabbing the mouth to test out the mechanisms.

“A sheep, a drum, and a snake fall off a cliff. What sound do they make?” You raise your voice to a falsetto to give Oreo a voice as you puppet him. Orochimaru looks at you and cocks an eyebrow before sighing.

“Two wet smacks and a crash?”

Oh he tried. “Nope. Baaaa-dum-hisss.” You make the buzzsaws in Oreo’s mouth rev with the hiss and Orochimaru groans.

“Never do that again.”

“Consider it hissstory.” He snorts and finishes his dumplings.

“...”

“Did you not like the joke?”

“No.”

“I thought it was hisssterical.”

He throws his paper plate at a trashcan dramatically as he rolls his eyes. “You just like revving the saws on that, don’t you?”

You smile and the expression is mirrored in his face. “It’s possible.” Taking Oreo off your shoulders and putting him on the table when you finish your dumplings, the rest of the daylight is spent marking with a kunai where the paint goes on the segments, then filling in the paint. You may or may not mess up a few times on purpose so Orochimaru has to help you. Not that you’d ever mess up not on purpose, it was all planned.

It’s almost time for dinner when you’re finished with Oreo, and he’s so pretty looking when the paint dries, even though you’re wearing pretty normal clothes you feel dressed up when you put him on. “Thank you so much!” You try to hold back your enthusiasm to look cool, but it really doesn’t work. Orochimaru stands up and waves as he begins to walk off, ignoring your thanks.

Taking a small detour on the way home and walking down towards the street both the Hyuga and Uchiha Clans live on, you let Orochimaru be humble. Oreo looks much more...complete if you had to put words to it and it makes you think showing him a little love wouldn’t be a bad thing. Since you still haven’t spent pretty much any of your money since your mission six weeks ago you could probably work on some upgrades to him while you recover. Of course, you’re not some pansy, you could probably do some work on a new jutsu if you wanted instead. But wait, you still haven’t been collecting the oil from Teal or the muscle-melting venom from Stripey, and all that stuff from the eel could be useful, and what the Crusher Rat blood did to Hideaki…

Oh you have plenty to do, but it’s just not possible to have enough time. Wait you forgot the contact poison you were going to make… no, focus Yoko. You can start something this evening and then work on it when you aren’t in training. Right now your team is putting their faith in you, so you shouldn’t let them down. When you reach the Hyuga compound, the guard on duty is the same one and you get ready to introduce yourself again right until you notice Hideaki’s sister leaving at the same time. “Hey! Hibiki!”

She turns her head to look at you and rushes over. “Yoko! What are you doing back?” It’s easy to tell that she’s holding out some hope that you’re going to tell her Hideaki is back too, but she also seems nervous about it. She’s dressed in what looks like a modern dress with heels and a purse, which is incredibly surprising given the normal attire you see the Hyuga in, all traditional. It looks surprisingly nice and you wonder if maybe she’s going to meet someone.

“I got injured, so I was sent here for monitoring. Hideaki wanted me to tell you that he’s doing okay.” You get the feeling she’d kill you if you had decided to tell her about you sleeping in the same tent as him, she seems like the type. However, omitting that caused her to sigh with relief at the news that her brother is okay.

She looks at Oreo. “You got the puppet a paint job. It’s pretty.” Oh you aren’t doing the backhanded compliments this time? That was actually kind of fun though.

So you respond with one too. “Thanks. I like your dress.”

Hibiki smiles and looks at the guard as he clearly is ignoring the two of you. “Be careful, there’s been talk about you. Stay away from the Aburame.” She whispers the advice into your ear.

“Why?” You whisper back.

“The Hokage cleared the air about you, said all the clan politics should stay away from you. But I could see the gears turning.” Aaaand now you’re scared. Great.

You recall something you brought up to Takuya before this, and decide Hibiki might know some things you don’t about it. “I actually heard, a while ago when I was in the woods, two men talking about trying to add a boy to their clan? They were smoking and talking about ‘adding his knowledge’ to their clan. One was named Kon and he was trying to set up his cousin.” That’s all you can really recall, maybe they were more specific but you don’t remember after so long. Of course, thinking about it now, you realize that it couldn’t have been Hyuga because they would have seen you, probably the same with Uchiha, and Aburame have bugs and you remember smoke being bad for bugs. That’s three eliminated right there.

Hibiki doesn’t show much of a reaction, but her eye starts to twitch a little. “I wouldn’t worry about that. Certain less well-respected clans try to marry promising ninja in so that they can try to fix something wrong at the top. It’s pretty silly. But that’s useful, thank you.” She grimaces a little. “I’d tell you to avoid any clan that you don’t have a teammate in. No reason to try to entice you as far as I can tell.” It seems like she isn’t exactly fond of telling you that you can trust the Uchiha.

“Thank you, I’ll try to take that to heart.” It never occurred to you that after the revelations from earlier today, you might be more sought after. You find it disgusting really, trying to mash together people for the sole purpose of bettering yourself, it completely removes free will from the equation. Now you’re actually getting a bit angry at the fact that it sounds like this isn’t even uncommon.

“Have a good evening, Yoko.” Hibiki walks off and you move in the opposite direction towards the Uchiha compound.

You think you have this whole ‘talking to clan members’ thing down by now, the guard didn’t even question your presence despite your casual outfit. So you walk more confidently towards the compound with Oreo resting on your shoulders, entertaining the thought that you might actually be a bit taller than when you first put on your headband. The tightly-bound ponytail makes you look a bit less like a child you’d say, and overall you’re feeling pretty good despite the ache in your abdomen from the wound.

When you reach the gate for the Uchiha compound, the guard stops you. “We’re not allowing visitors this late.” He stands straight and unmoving, staring at you.

“I’m a teammate of Katsurou’s.” This worked with Hideaki’s, maybe it’ll work here? Hyuga and Uchiha are basically interchangeable if you ignore the Uchiha being the military police.

He looks at you and doesn’t move an inch. “Okay. We don’t allow visitors this late. If you want something you should come back tomorrow.” It doesn’t seem to be working. “Wait, you’re talking about Cats?” Or it is! “How’d he go?”

Now you’re confused. “Excuse me?”

The guard sighs at having to explain himself. “How did he die? Your teacher must have sealed his eyes, but now I’m curious how he died. That’s why you’re back, right? I can let you see his parents so they can hear it from you.” Oh my god, they expect him to be dead as their first thought? You guess he wasn’t depressed over nothing, that’s just cold. Now you’re almost a bit happy that he’s more fired up, these guys deserve a bit of rebellion if this is how they operate.

Still, this presents an opportunity to get into the compound.

>>
You’re not that interested in doing that today though. “I’ll come back tomorrow. He’s not dead.” Holding your tongue on the last sentence, the guard responds.

“Really? That’s a surprise.” Okay, you need to leave now before you say something you’ll regret. You turn around and walk off angrily, clenching your fist where the guard can’t see it. “I meant to say relief.” His lackluster explanation doesn’t convince you as you storm in a beeline towards your home, rounding a corner by the police department and moving a bit faster, a small bit of pain in your chest driving you on. That’s just unfair. Sure, Katsurou has been kind of a jerk lately, but from what you’ve seen you’re shocked he didn’t decide he wanted nothing to do with his clan and been something like a vet.

As you look ahead, you wonder a bit what your Dad’s family must have been like. Did they treat Dad like this? Or was it worse? It had to have been worse, he left his village to come here. But another scary thought comes after that. Did he teach you everything he knew about chemistry… to pass it on? It would make sense, the Hokage did say he was a prodigy, but that means that your dad must know some variant of how the Dokute wiped out families. If he was responsible for doing something like that…

You think about how Dad smiles, and dotes on you, and did all this for you. He can’t be someone different from that, maybe he used to be, but he isn’t now. Nothing has changed. When you take off your shoes at the door, the silence makes you worried, but it’s the sound of chopsticks clacking that makes you scared. You’re late for dinner and nobody’s talking, so you get the feeling some very strong words were exchanged before you arrived. When you round the corner to the dining room, you can see Dad staring down at his plate and Mom looking so angry it almost forces you back out of the room.

She notices you and her face softens up into the normal smile she wears during the day despite it not actually changing the pressure in the room. “Hey Yoyo! We saved some teriyaki for you!” Oh no, whenever something’s really bad is when she takes that excited tone. She’s overcompensating.

Dad just looks down and mumbles at her, but you can hear what he’s saying. “I hate your fake smile, don’t patronize her.” Mom’s eyes open a crack conveying the amount of rage she’s feeling enough to make you shiver, but Dad doesn’t react. “Better.” This really feels like a situation you’re not going to be able to help.
>>
Sitting down and picking up your chopsticks, you eat cautiously, like you’re hanging off the edge of a cliff. Mom speaks normally, not hiding her displeased tone of voice. “What held you up?”

“I had to deliver some messages for my teammates.” You respond dryly, trying to say as little as possible to avoid saying something wrong.

“You were told to be home for dinner, you had all day, were you too busy painting?” There’s no right answer to this question.

Dad interjects. “Moriko, it’s fine, she needed the time.”

“Of course you’d say that! What makes this an exception?! We barely see each other anymore!” Mom’s crying a little bit, but… you’re not sure if she’s trying to press it to be right.

“It has been a hard day for her, just lay off her, okay? For now at least.” You can see what’s going on, Dad’s taking the blame for this for you.

>”I didn’t realize the time.” (Take the blame)
>Finish your dinner in silence. (Let Dad take the blame)

What do we look like a Uchiha to blame others for our failures?
>>
You can’t just stand by and watch this, Dad didn’t do anything wrong. “No, I just didn’t realize the time… I’m sorry.” That normally works, Mom normally has trouble staying mad at you, it’s just the spoon then done. And you can endure the spoon if it means Dad isn’t taking the blame for something that’s entirely your fault. “But I met the tea… cher… Mom are you okay?” Trying to get some enthusiasm into the room and change the mood with your story about what you did that day only seems to make her turn red. She stands up from the table.

“No. I try my absolute hardest to be there for both of you, to not be the one who’s down about his job, that was a complete lie, and stay positive. When I get no notice at all that someone needs to leave home for a month! Or let’s get really crazy and bring up when I was told there isn’t a deadline! But I can deal with all that.” She takes a deep breath to compose herself. “But when not one, but both of you show up late for the one meal since Yoko came back, that I slaved over, that I was trying to gloss over the fact I’ve been lied to for almost half my life, just so maybe we could be a happy family for one more time until she grows up! I can’t take it.” She starts walking for the door. “I’ll be back tomorrow, don’t ask when.”

She tries her hardest not to break the door as she leaves, and you’re still worried she was close. It...didn’t work at all, you just ended up being included on her anger. And now you feel bad. Dad stares down at his plate, then picks it up and walks it to the sink, doing the same with the plate Mom left behind. He doesn’t talk and you can barely catch a glimpse of his face as he starts washing the dishes mechanically.
>>
The food on your plate looks great, but it tastes like burnt wood as you try to force yourself to eat, and so you stand up, put the leftovers back in the pot, and set it in the fridge for tomorrow. You didn’t know that’s how Mom felt, and your constant all-nighters and injury probably didn’t help things for her. When you’re finished cleaning the table, you walk next to Dad and help him rinse the dishes.

“You should have just let me handle that.” He dries the last one as he says that.

“That wouldn’t have been right, it was my fault.”

Dad sighs. “Sometimes what’s right and what’s correct are two different things. She would have been less mad if it had just been my fault.” You don’t really see how that’s a good thing, you would have been lying to her. Dad goes to lay on the couch, then rolls over so his face is towards the back of it. “I’m going to get some sleep, I have an early day tomorrow.”

Somehow, you doubt that. But trying to pry Dad out of something like this is hopeless.
