You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

"So you want to go over the plan again?" Karla chuckles over the radio.

"Yes." You sigh loudly so she can hear. "Especially since I'm flying into what is possibly an enemy stronghold in nothing but a disarmed VF-171 held together with nothing but spit and tape."

"It's simple, really." Karla explains. "You just approach the boneyard just like any delivery pilot, use your cover credentials to get inside the facility, and try to uncover any evidence of wrongdoing on the part of the Colonial Liberation Front! Simple!"

"Easy to say when you're in an orbital command center." You grumble.

"My my, were you always this mouthy in Special Forces?" Karla chuckles. "But don't say I don't have your well being in mind! You have ample backup in case things go wrong!"

"Backup, huh?" You say sarcastically, looking at the empty dusk sky outside your cockpit. "I don't see it."

"That's the point, isn't it?" Karla breaks out into full laughter now. "Serpent 1-1, how about you give our friend some reassurance?"

That's when you see a flicker of light right above you and you crane your head up to see a VF-22 Sturmvogel, painted in pure black, flying just above and in front of your rickety VF-171. Meanwhile, your sensors weren't picking anything up and they were one of the few systems on this rust bucket that was actually working properly.

Looked like they made some big improvements in the VF-22's stealth systems while you weren't looking.

Wait a minute. You squint a bit. Most pilots, even Special Forces, couldn't help but to personalize their craft in some way, and the community was small enough that you could reliably recognize the craft they flew just by looking at them, even if they were sporting different paintjobs.

But what struck you about this Valkyrie was the complete and utter absence of any sort of identifying or personal marking. Just pure black. No frills or flashy bits.

Which led you to believe you knew who was watching your six...

"Tarin, that you?" You ask.

Silence.

"It's okay for you to speak to him, you know?" Karla butts in. "You two are acquaintances, right?"

"Nice to see you again, Harry." Tarin's voice responds. Simple, curt, to the point. Just like how you remember.

"So, still have any reservations?" Karla asks, her voice just as charmingly infuriating as ever.

"I guess not." You sigh. "Still, is this really going to work?"

"Your ID is ironclad, and it's not like your face is well known. It'll be simple!" Karla tries to assure you.

"I can stay on station above you if you want." Tarin adds. "We chose dusk as your arrival time so we could use the darkness to mask our presence."

True, with Tarin staying on station above you, she'd be able to respond very quickly in case something went wrong. Then again, staying up there also meant there was a larger chance she'd be detected, as unlikely as that might be...

"Tarin, mind hanging back a bit?" You request. "I don't want the base getting spooked seeing ghosts in the sky."

"...roger." Tarin acknowledges as her VF-22 banks away.

And just like that you lose sight of her again. Your sensors still aren't any help. Then again, just knowing she was nearby was a big relief.

"Junker 9-9, please respond. This is Boneyard Control. You have not confirmed your approach vector."

Shit! You immediately get your mind back on the mission, recalling all of your cover details.

"Sorry about that, Control. Junker 9-9 coming in on heading 6-2-6."

"Roger that. Safe landings, pilot."

That's when you finally see it. The Boneyard. Sure, there was supposed to be some fancy, official name for the base, but that was basically what everybody called it because, well... that's what it was.

Located on the other side of a mountain range, the Boneyard was set in a desert area, where the tropical rain clouds couldn't reach over said mountain range. That made it the perfect area to store old and unwanted equipment in the long term. Up ahead, in the dim orange light of dusk, you could see the faded outlines of countless Valkyries, destroids, ship parts, and colony modules, all laid out in the desert waiting for the day they would be either restored, recycled, or outright scrapped.

On one end of the Boneyard was the main landing strip and a small knot of buildings where the decommissioning and restoration of stored craft took place. Other than a few sporadically placed guard towers, a simple chain link fence, and the occasional foot patrol, there wasn't much security. Who would go all the way out here to steal some obsolete military equipment?

Either way, you make your landing without any issues. You exit your plane and are immediately greeted by an officer, his face glued to a clipboard.

"Good job..." The officer takes the time to raise his head and squint at your nametag. "...Mills. We'll handle the craft from here."

"So, uh, what do I do in the meantime?" You ask.

The officer looks up again, obviously unhappy he's had to take his eyes off his clipboard again.

"Sorry, I'm new here." You shrug.

"Obviously." Officer Clipboard sighs and points to a squat building on the other end of the runway. "That's the commissary over there. That's where we have the pilots wait until we can ship them out on the next outbound flight."

"I see." You turn your head to the other knot of buildings. "What about those?"

"The Engineering and Adminstrative blocks." Officer Clipboard grunts. "Though you've got no reason to head there, do you?"

"Do I?" You shrug.

"As long as you don't head into a restricted area." Officer Clipboard shakes his head and shuffles off, not wanting to be distracted from his precious clipboard anymore.

Hm, well, heading for the commissary would put you in contact with the other pilots. Might be a nice source of rumors and intel.

Then again, the Administration block would have all of the records of everything that went in and out of the Boneyard. There had to be something in there implicating the CLF.

Finally, there was the Engineering sections. If parts and planes were being smuggled out, that's where the magic would happen.

However, you didn't have much time. The next outbound flight would be in roughly an hour, and base security would get suspicious if you didn't turn up by then.

Your first thought is to head for the commissary. It was an obvious spot to go to and it certainly wouldn't arouse any suspicion. You look both ways to make sure you wouldn't get run over by a vehicle or plane before quickly jogging across the tarmac towards the small but brightly lit building.

You calmly walk into the commissary, which was actually quite empty, which was odd because usually this would be dinner hour. Then again, you can't imagine the staff for this base being very large, so maybe they were still on shift or something.

There's a couple of MPs standing guard, a single cook working the cafeteria line, a trio a mechanics, and couple of pilots like you. The smell of cheap cafeteria food and coffee fills your nostrils, causing a rumbling in your belly. Even though the flight here wasn't that long, the rushed nature of this mission mean you didn't exactly have a lot of time to top yourself off.

However, before you can even step foot forward, the two MPs are already up in your face.

"Sir, you'll have to come with us." One of them says.

"Excuse me?" You blink.

"Just a routine security check." The other MP explains. "It won't take long."

Alarm bells were immediately ringing in your head. You glance at the other commissary occupants, but they either didn't notice this little altercation or didn't care. You're not sure if any or all of them were in on it or not.

Then again, maybe you were just being paranoid.

"Sir?" One of the MPs asks again more sternly, his hand inching closer to his stun baton.

You decide to play along for now. Maybe these guys could lead you to the big fish. Or at least someone higher up the food chain.

Though of course, this was insanely risky. Even if you signaled Tarin for help, it would be no guarantee she'd be in a position to save you if you got into trouble.

Nevertheless, the MPs lead you away from the Commissary and towards the Engineering hangars, oddly enough. You eye them warily, but they don't make any sudden or aggressive moves on you. They were certainly playing their cool.

Finally, you're led into what looks to be a small machine shop repurposed into a makeshift office. There was a steel work table, and simple, steel chairs, and lots and lots of tools of types and sizes. In the background, you could hear the whine of power tools and the hiss of welding torches. If something were to happen in here, you doubted anybody would hear.

The two MPs take positions on either side of the door, and an officer steps in, viewing a tablet.

"Hmmmm, so it seems there are a few... inconsistencies with your records, 'Airman Mills.'" Your interrogator raises a suspicious eyebrow at you. "Is that your real name, in fact?"

Well, in your training, you were always taught to stick to your cover until you knew for sure it was blown. After all, an innocent person would always stubbornly insist that they were right.

"Of course it is!" You huff. "Come on, don't tell me this is because I didn't dot the right i or anything!"

Your interrogator then pauses and chuckles as he takes a seat across from you.

"Don't worry, your paperwork checks out." The man smiles. "I'm Lieutenant Arbil, by the way."

"Pleasure." You nod, trying to look nonchalant. "So uh, any reason why we've got this little secret squirrel thing going on here?"

"Well, I've been going through your record, and I was wondering if you were having any trouble with your living costs? An apartment in Nabaal city center must cost quite a lot."

"I've got roommates." You shrug. "And I don't have a girlfriend to suck the life out of my wallet like a Protodevlin, you know?"

"That makes sense." Arbil chuckles. "But wouldn't it you like to make a little extra every month?"

"How much extra are we talking about?" You raise an eye eyebrow. Were these guys seriously trying to recruit you?

"How about, five thousand credits?" Arbil's grin widens. "Whenever you bring another Valkyrie in, all you need to do is take a little detour, have a coffee break, and then continue on your way."

"You borrowing parts from the planes or something?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I never said anything of the sort." Arbil shrugs. "So how about it?"

You glance at the two MPs. Even if this was just a completely unrelated smuggling ring, you knew that they weren't going to take no for an answer. You already knew too much.

"That's quite the interesting question coming from you." Arbil narrows his eyes. "What exactly are you getting at?"

"Look, I'm not dumb or anything." You shrug. "I heard about what you guys tried to pull during the concert. Shame it didn't work out, right?"

"And let's say you're right." Arbil's grin tenses for a second. "What would you do if I said yes?"

"You guys recruiting?" You ask. "You're gonna need pilots, right?"

"That we do, that we do..." Arbil nods. "Unfortunately, authorizing an.. upgraded package like that is not my call. I'll have to make a few queries."

And with that, Arbil politely gets up and pauses at the door.

"I suggest you stay put for the moment. This won't take long."

And then the door shuts. The MPs remain there like sentinels.

This looked to be your chance. If you tailed Arbil and hacked his comms, you might be able to get a lead higher up the chain. Or maybe your little gamble will work and they'll actually think you're an eager recruit.

But still, Karla only said your credentials were solid, not ironclad. You had to decide on the right time to make move...

You pause when you see both MPs crane their heads very slightly. A sure sign they were being contacted via radio. That wasn't the best of signs, but wasn't necessarily bad.

No, the bad sign was when they started reach for their holstered sidearms. You reach for your own. Thankfully they did not opt to disarm you first. You fire on the left one, putting three rounds in his chest, but you don't have time to switch to the second MP before his pistol clears his holster and aims at you. You kick the metal table over and take cover just as he fires, bullets whizzing right over the edge of the table as you hunkered behind it.

This was not good. You didn't have a visual on the guard, and he knew perfectly well where you were. Sitting here was just asking to get flanked, or if he was smart, he'd just lock you in the room until reinforcements arrived.

Maybe it was time to call in Tarin to help you out. Your cover was blown, anyways.

Not intending to just let your opponent take the initiative, you do the first thing that comes to mind. You push against the overturned table, using it as a makeshift shield as you move forward. You hear more gunshots and see the table surface get dented in from the bullet impacts, but fortunately this work table was built tough. You keep pushing until you slam into the wall, catching the last MP in the middle. He screams in pain, but that's all he has time to do when you aim your gun and fire, your shot going through the bottom of his jaw and straight out of the top of his skull.

Meanwhile, the busywork of machines and tools continues to buzz and whine in the background, nobody the wiser thanks to all the noise. Perhaps that's why they chose this place for their "interviews".

Regardless, they were on to you now, but you could still salvage this, hopefully. You needed something to bring back to Karla to work with, but not a lot of time to do it.

Okay, okay, you could still do this. You take a deep breath, reload your sidearm, and reholster it. You had a small window right now. Time to take advantage of it.

"Tarin, my cover's blown. I'm going to make a move to recover the maintenance server and we'll extract."

"Roger." Tarin replies simply. "I've got a lock on your beacon."

You open the door and head deeper into the maintenance hangar. You pass through the main work floor, where you could see rows of VF-171s in various states of repair and dismantlement. Over a dozen mechanics and technicians were rushing to and fro, stripping the airframes of anything useful, too caught up in their work to notice or care about you.

And in the back, you could see the mainframes that connected to all of the Valkyrie flight computers to synchronize and update data, including every detailed record of what happened to each individual component.

And there was the primary server, plugged into a computer tower. The door to it wasn't even locked, you guess because the engineers needed constant access to it.

Now you just needed to figure out a way to escape with it.

All right, time to put those Special Forces skills to work. While you were by no means a tech expert, you knew enough about electronics that you could operate basic machinery and systems. All you had to do was just unplug the thing and get the hell out. Simple.

You quickly and discreetly unplug the server and stuff it into an extra work bag you see lying around. Fortunately, nobody seems to notice as you shuffle out of the back door.

However, as you do, warning klaxons whine. You see Valkyries taking off from the airstrip and flashlights from foot patrols spreading out. Judging with how they seemed to be combing all corners of the base, you were pretty sure they didn't have a solid idea of where you were. As long as you could stay ahead of them, you'd be fine.

"Harry, I'm on station." Tarin announces. "It's going to be tricky getting out, though."

"See any exits?" You ask.

"You can try one of the parked Valkyries or grab a truck near the hangars." Tarin suggests. "Or I can come down and pick you up directly. Might cause a bit of a scene, though."

"Noted." You respond. "I'll try to procure something on site."

"Roger." Tarin replies simply.

You could already see your target. A rather secluded and forgotten hangar on the other side of the Engineering block. You could see a number of trucks parked outside, and the noses of a few Valkyries poking out the front...

You jog over to the hangar and look at the Valkyries gathered within. Disappointment immediately sets in when you see that many of the Valkyries, in fact, are not fit to fly. Many are missing wings, engines, and other critical components.

Thankfully, though, there was one very old VF-4. A retired trainer, obviously. It still looked fairly intact, but kind of beat up...

"Has anyone checked Hangar C yet?" You hear someone yell outside.

Shit, no time. You leap into the cockpit and pray the plane will activate when you hit the power switch...

There's a loud hum as the engines finally thrum to life, and the instruments and HUD wink on. Looks like all systems were green. Well, no weapons, those were already stripped out, but beggars couldn't be choosers.

"YES!" You cheer.

However, your commandeering of this ancient VF-4 has not gone unnoticed, as you could see numerous flashlights outside coming your way.

You needed to start moving and fast.

"Hey Tarin, let's try not to kill these guys, okay?" You say. "We're not sure how involved all of them are."

"Roger." Tarin responds as simply as ever. "

"HALT!" You radio suddenly blares. You look up to see a squadron of VF-171s blocking your way. Two were in battroid mode blocking the runway, while the rest were in GERWALK and hovering in the air, weapon trained on you. "STEP OUT OF THE VALKYRIE!"

However, none of them see Tarin's VF-22 as it swoops down from above like a bat. A few autocannon bursts flashing in the night, and you see the airborne VF-171s spinning out of control in the air as their thrusters and wings are shot out.

The two battroid VF-171s spin around to try and find the target, but Tarin is too fast. Her VF-22 transforms to battroid mode in midair and two blades extend from the forearms as it drops down.

Two clean swings send the heads of the VF-171s flying through the air.

And all of this happened in the space of a few seconds. Tarin certainly hadn't lost her touch.

"Now's a good time to leave." Tarin reminds you, her VF-22's red optics glaring at you.

"Right." You nod as you hit full throttle and boost away into the night.

---

It takes a while for you to reach the rendezvous point, much deeper in the desert where civilization hasn't quite reached yet. You follow the beacon and land your VF-4, kicking up a storm of dust and sand. Standing there waiting for you is Karla.

And behind you, Tarin's VF-22 lands.

"Excellent job, you two!" Karla claps as you open up your canopy. "Not quite as clean as I would have hoped, but you at least made your escape!"

"And I have some intel." You say as you pull out the workbag with the stolen server.

"Hm, yes, we'll have to get our techs to work on that." Karla nods and spins around. "Come along now, Captain. We'll need to be returning to the Pacifica. Tarin, take care of the evidence."

You see Tarin's VF-22 shift to battroid mode and aim its autocannon at the VF-4.

"Hm, I didn't take you for a connoisseur for old Valkyries." Karla raises an eyebrow.

"What can I say?" You grin. "I've got a thing for the classics."

"Always more surprises with you, huh?" Karla chuckles. "Though that means we're going to have to file off all the serial numbers and give its history a good scrubbing. That's a lotta work and trouble for us, you know. How are gonna make it up?"

"Can't you just let me off out of the kindness of the yawning, empty void in your chest?" You say simply.

Karla bursts out into laughter, nearly dropping the server as she wipes a tear from her.

"Oh dear, I do have to admit that's a good one!" She snickers. "But not quite enough!"

"How about I break the bad news to the Admiral?" You roll your eyes.

"Now THAT sounds like it's a deal!" Kara grins and waves at Tarin's VF-22. It immediately lowers its weapon.

"There's still too much heat to fly this thing directly back, but I'll arrange some transport." Kara explains. "Let's head back, shall we?"

"And Tarin?" You ask.

"She'll escort us as far as Pacifica, but you of all people should how busy she is. Got places to go, things to do, people to kill!" Karla smiles. "Not all that different from what you're doing now, now that I think about it."

"Just I hope whatever's on that server is worth it." You sigh.

"For both yours and my sake, buddy!" Karla nods. "I mean, she'll probably just verbally reprimand me, but who knows what sort of dark, depraved acts she'll force upon you!"
