Character info pastebin in progress: http://pastebin.com/iB0tb7rz
Dice odds for best of 3: http://pastebin.com/994WTT3g

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roselia)
Dice (Croconaw)
Sorbet (Vulpix)

Location: Outside of the Grass type gym on Tabo Island

“How about a nice, well cooked meal?” You ask.

“Ah. Not many offers for that. May I ask why you’re offering such a thing? Please, in detail, explain your reasoning.”

Well, there are lots of reasons, you suppose. One, is that it’s something everybody needs. It’s universal. Not likely to be rejected or unwanted. Another is that it’s something you’re good at, if you’re allowing yourself to brag a little. Yet another reason is that you assumed, you guess correctly, that it’s not thought of that often.

You reach out and touch the small scratch on his arm while you think, healing it. He reacts in astonishment, unable to find words. But you’re too lost in thought on your reason to really notice.

The main reason you chose it is...

“It’s what I’m best at, I think.” You throw your hands up a little “I mean, it’s the skill I’ve best honed, not that I’m saying I’m the best cook in the world. It’s the best thing I could give.”

Laki whispers to Hana. Hana blushes and they both giggle, giving you a funny look.

“Yes. Language is tricky like that.” The guard says. “That’s why we Loanan’s value the spirit of the word rather than the technical meaning. We believe that intentions should be clear and that people cannot hide behind misleading tricks of language.”

That explanation seemed a little out of nowhere, but you’re always happy to learn something new. You like exploring exactly for that reason.

The guard motions to an area on the side. Not knowing what else to do, you get your pack out and start cooking. Luckily you have a small amount of firewood and supplies to do a quick, small meal without much trouble.

As you’re setting you, you notice that Hana is struggling for something to offer.

“Uh, I uh...” She mumbles. “I don’t mind waiting out here. I could go fishing...”

>Good luck! Hope you catch something good!

Wait, she’s offering to catch a fish as her gift, right? Not saying she’ll go fishing while everyone else does the gym?

Because I want her in the gym so we can squeeze her butt while we watch other people battle.
>>
“Umm, I...” Hana struggles. Her face is becoming sweaty. She grabs her arm, unlocks it, and presents it. “Here!”

The guard is speechless for a moment. He’s not the only one, either. He does manage to get his head around it after a moment. “I very much urge you to reconsider.” He says.

“Uh, right. Sorry. That’s not really useful unless you chop off your arm.” She laughs nervously. “Don’t want to do that!”

“...Yes.”

“Um, I’ll go uh, fish now, then.”

You pull her in by the hip to give her a kiss on the cheek, but because of her legs you end up just yanking yourself forward. Still, your lips reach their destination and you whisper. “Good luck. If you can’t catch anything then you can always offer to move or charge something.”

“Oh. Yeah. Wait, what? I just meant that I’d sit out for the battle, but...” She inhales sharply. “Yeah! I can fish. I -can- fish! Thanks, Herb.” She looks back to the guard. “I’m going to fish, and I’ll bring back something. I don’t know what it is yet, but I’m on a lucky streak lately and if it holds then it’s only fair that I share it.” Oh gosh. She squeezed your hand when she said ‘lucky’.

She looks around for a moment and finds and puts together her fishing rod, then scurries off. Then she stops herself when she realizes that you’re actually right next to a small river. She visually confirms with the guard that it’s alright to fish here. Laki’s already off to a small cave nearby, promising to return shortly.

You get to cooking and watch Valerie’s small show with her pokemon. It’s a cute little physical comedy bit that ends in a beautiful flourish. Personally you think she’s mismatching themes, but it’s still a very impressive display.

Valerie beams with pride, but that fades into amazement and a little jealousy as Abigail offers a beautiful song. With the backdrop of the light mist from the waterful, she’s the vision of beauty and grace. At least, until it’s over and she goes back to her punkish posture and sarcastic tone. “So yeah. I brought you some civilization.”

The guard opens his mouth to say something, but it’s just in time for you to put in a spoonful of what you’ve made. You can’t help but also feel a little pride when it makes him forget what Abigail just said.

“That’s an unusual smell.” A voice says from inside the door. “I’ll gladly battle you out there instead, if you wish. I warn you, inside this gym things are quite unfair in my favor.”

“Can we come in and get a better look?” Abigail asks.

“No. Decide now.” The response is harsh. “Come in now or not at all.”

“Unusual smell?” You ask, as you cautiously let yourself, watching for signs that you’re not allowed. The guard simply watches you. Your pokemon follow around your feet. Gardevoir comes with you as well. Then Abigail and Valerie shortly after. Keira stays behind, waving her hands in front of the guard’s eyes and testing his patience. He hasn’t moved from his spot and, like her, you wonder if he ever does. You wouldn’t test it like she is, though.

“Yes.” The voice says, plucking the bowl from your hand. “It’s foreign to me. Do you wish me to give a value judgement?”

It’s so bright in here. Your eyes are taking a moment to adjust.

“Uh, if you’re asking if I’d like to know what you think of it, sure. I always appreciate feedback. It’s how I improve.” Please like it. Man, you feel strange without an islander friend here to help you in case you don’t understand what’s proper. Well, you guess Abigail counts. Maybe.

Gobble tries reaching to get the food back, thinking you’ve been stolen from. You signal him that it’s alright. Mace, to your surprise, has a readied stance against the gym leader.

He looks like a normal person of high status here. An older man with a slight belly but in otherwise good shape, white hair, and the usual important robes and headgear. His is a little different, with lots of fashioned wood and a casualness to the way it hangs. You can tell right away that he rarely wears anything else and doesn’t worry about keeping it looking proper like some of the others.

The gym is beautiful. It’s got a series of branches overhead in an amazingly complicated pattern that filters the water into a simulated rainfall below. A small creek forms below to drain the excess and it even has fish in it. The grass is such a vibrant green that you almost think it’s painted with something, and there are all sorts of flowers and plants around, and even a group of Combee.

“It is depressingly delicious” He says as he tries to hand it back. But he stops himself and gobbles down the rest with haste. “Too good. Mph. Thank you, I was famished. I have no advice on how to improve it, although I wish it were worse.”

Valerie and Abigail exchange a look, and even give one to you. You’re as clueless as them. “Um, thanks?”

“Ah yes. I should explain. I’m a prominent member of a xenophobic group that wants to keep non-Loanan’s from settling here. Food like yours is another difficulty in delivering my message.”

You must have misheard. Or he must be joking around or testing your or something. That was just so blunt!

“Oh!” Abigail suddenly shoots up. “I knew I recognized you!” She says with a surprisingly friendly voice. “I’ve read some of your work.”

“W-what?” Valerie finally says something.

“Oh yeah. Our gym leader here thinks Loanah should stay majority Loanan, and put back the rules against foreigners staying, or give them one small island to live on.”

“A simplification, but yes. Thank you, young man.” He hands back the bowl. “Now, who am I battling first?”

>Woah! Back up! What?

You’re worried about disrespecting an elder here, but you’ve asked questions before without it being considered offensive. Here goes. “Why are you being so polite if you don’t like us?”

“How could I dislike someone I don't know?” He says with an odd jovialness. “Oh no. I’ve heard that accusation many times. I have no hatred in my heart for you or anyone else simply for being different. I quite enjoy know there’s such variety in the world. I just don’t see a prosperous future for Loanah if it’s no longer Loanan. Look at Huka. Huka is already looking almost indistinguishable from other major city in the world, and it’s identity means less every day while problems mount. Different groups coming in, not integrating, and clashing with their different values. There’s no peace in such a place! No philia! No sense of belonging. No future worth having. Why, just recently a young halfling girl came and won a gym badge, but she clearly had identity issues. Poor girl, torn between worlds.”

“Maybe Jane feels that way because of people who hold racist views making her feel unwelcome.” Valerie says, barely able to keep her voice steady. She seems more confused and overwhelmed than angry.

“Oh? You know this for a fact? Well, let’s say that is the case. It’s purely because of people like me. Then do you suppose as Loanans become a minority in their own home that there will be less, or more people concerned with their diminishing representation and values being given less priority? Human nature, being what it is, will make the people here harder, more tribalistic, and more hostile. I don't want to see that. I like the warm, friendly place we have. A squatter in your home makes even the best host rude, eventually.”

“How friendly is it to kick people out?”

He sighs, like he's heard this question a lot.. “Not very. But every day of inaction is worse in the long term. I’d like a civil, orderly, and friendly solution before a terrible clash becomes inevitable. You must understand, I don’t wish you any harm. I hope your future is prosperous. This is better for my people and yours, as you would have less reason to come here and we’d be able to have good relations. I don’t wish to make our problems into your problems either. What is the old mainlander saying? ‘Tall fences make for good neighbors.’ None of this would have become a problem if we simply prevented people from moving in in the first place.”

“What makes you think a terrible clash is inevitable?” You ask.

“History!” He waves a finger. “When one central authority rules over multiple, distinct peoples, it’s called empire. Empires are not free. By necessity, they must repress to keep stability. And even then, eventually, all empires fall. I don’t want to see the freedom or self determination of my people or others lost. I will prioritize the well being of my people above all other considerations though. I would not trust someone who says or believes they wouldn’t do the same.” He comes to a stop from his pacing. “And finally, even if none of what I predict comes to pass, you must concede that Loanah and it’s values and ways of life will forever change under current trends. If nothing else, I want to keep my people and their legacy safe. Violence is not the only way to destroy a people.”

“You used to write under a pseudonym, right?” Abigail asks, poking around the building casually. “How come you’re so open now? Won’t the clergy have you removed?”

“I’m old. I’ve kept my views to myself and watched things change in my home without voicing opposition for fear of losing my position and respect. I no longer care. By the time I’m removed I’ll be dead anyway. At least if I give voice to my concerns for the future I might find some solace in the next world.” He leans down. “Before you ask, I have no intention of treating you any different in a battle than I would a Loanan. But also don’t expect the soft bigotry of lowered expectations some others might have offered you. The values of my gym are without compromise, as any values worth having are. Now, are you ready?”

Do we even want to battle this guy? If we win, and take his badge, we’ll just be carrying a reminder of him and what he stands for around with us.

We could win and refuse to accept the badge though.

We could double battle him to try to prove that people together are stronger than apart.

I’m kind of waiting for him to insult Hana, or Bella. Then Herb’ll go off.
>>
>>2152937
Better off just going through this as any other gym. Politics have no place in a pokemon battle and any petty act would strengthen his position. Carrying around his badge however could be viewed as having his approval.
>>
“Do you want to go first?” You ask Abigail. “I want to wait for Hana and Laki.”

“Me? Ah. I’ve already been on my journey there, Herby-boy.” She thinks. “But I did turn down a lot of gym battles. And it would be an honor to fight you, sir.”

“You’re kidding!”

“Nope. Dude’s got balls. And he’s mostly right.”

“He wants to kick you out of your home!” Valerie almost shouts.

“Like I said. -Mostly- right. My people aren’t moving. We were awarded our town fair and square. Besides, we mostly keep to ourselves anyway. It’s the other mainlander types that give us a bad name.”

“I can’t believe what I’m hearing.” Valerie whispers to herself.

He non-verbally acknowledges Abigail and waves a hand out to the arena. “How many badges and pokemon do you have?”

“Just the one badge. And one pokemon.” She says. “That okay?”

“Yes, that’s fine.” He makes his way to the other side of the arena. “And thank you for your polite attitude. I didn’t expect such a response.”

“You didn’t expect me to avoid ‘redding out’ and I didn’t expect so much honesty from an elder Loanan. It’s a day full of surprises” Abigail shoots back. Despite the words, her tone is light and joking. “So, what are the rules?”

“Quite simple. We battle here, under this area, just like normal. But look around carefully before we begin, what do you see?”

She stops and thinks. “Lots of reflective surfaces bringing in the sunlight, and water dripping from the ceiling. I don’t get what the big deal- Oh!”

“Yes!” He spreads his arms. “All the benefits of Sunny Day for my grass pokemon, but fire remains weakened under the rain. It’s quite the home advantage, wouldn’t you agree? Even flying types will find the hot sun and constant wet downpour to be draining while maintaining flight.”

“Good thing I have a bug type.” Abigail says under her breath.

As they’re about to start, Keira comes in. “Hey! How’s it going? Woah! Abigail’s battling?”

“How’s it going?” Valerie asks in amazement. “I’ll tell you how it’s going! That man over there is a- He’s-!”

“What?” Keira cocks her head.

“Nevermind.” Valerie says, taking you aside. “Herb, should we tell Keira what he’s like? She’s just had her faith rocked from her issues with the clergy.”

“He's a very polite but opinionated old man who wants to kick out or isolate all mainlanders to keep Loana safe and to resolve a future conflict he sees as inevitable before it starts.” You tell Keira.

“What?”

“He said he’s, and I quote: “a prominent member of a xenophobic group that wants to keep non-Loanan’s from settling here. Valerie’s mad, I’m confused and sad, and Abigail’s just used to it I guess. He’s polite, though.”

“Oh.” She says. “Sorry.”

You give her a quick pat on the shoulder to reassure her. He’s been polite, and you can sort of understand where he’s coming from even if you might not 100% agree.

“What splendid colours!” The gym leader shouts to Abigail after she releases her Vivillon. He sends out a Lilligant.

“Thanks!” Abigail says, touching her hair. You don’t think that’s what he meant.

The battle is actually pretty short. Abigail gets a few good moves in at the start, using Bug moves that hit hard while his Lilligant uses Teeter Dance and Quiver Dance. Just as it looks like she’s going to take it down though, Synthesis heals most of the damage and the pretty grass pokemon strikes back hard.

Bella pulls your leg and points.

“Yes, Bella.” Laki’s voice says from behind. “You’re prettier.” She picks Bella up and cuddles her. “What’d I miss? Oh nice! Abigail’s getting destroyed!”

Well, she’s not wrong. Abigail is losing. Her Vivillon can’t stand the rapid series of blows. But you do notice that it’s wings are deflecting a lot of the water without much worry. It puts up a pretty good fight. It almost makes a comeback, until Lilligant uses Light Screen to block the light rainfall, and then uses Grass Whistle to put it to sleep.

“See that?” Laki says. “The rainfall makes too much noise for Grass Whistle to be very accurate. Crafty.”

You all watch as Vivillon is declared unable to battle. They meet up around the side of the arena after and discuss the battle, and he even presents her with what looks like a small bag of medicine for her pokemon.

“Where’s Hana?”

“She said she might be a long time with fishing, and for us to go ahead.” Laki says. “So, you up next, or am I?”

“You can go ahead.” You offer.

Laki stretches. “You know you don’t have to impress Hana, right? She’s already really, really impressed with you.”

You smile.

“I think he’s hesitating because-” Valerie leans up to whisper in Laki’s here. You feel just the slightest twinge of concern when Laki looks like she enjoys Valerie's breath on her ear a little too much.

“He said what?” Laki’s posture changes.

“He’s been very polite.” You try to interject. But Laki is already very aggressively making her way to the battle area. She bows, but briefly and just doing the bare minimum.

“I’ll be your opponent next. Laki. One pokemon.” She flashes her badges quickly.

“You’re quite the impatient young lady.” He says. “Yes, yes. Let me see here.” He fiddles with his pokeballs, trying to choose the right one.

“I don’t mean to rush you, respected elder. I’m just eager to have our battle so that I can continue on to my plans for later.”

He chuckles as he finds the right pokeball and tosses it. “What might those be?”

“I’m going to impregnated by my mainlander boyfriend.” She winks at you and tosses a pokeball.

Wait. WHAT?

Bella scrambles from her sitting position to the top of your head. She looks at Laki, then you, then back again. Mace sighs and settles into a comfy spot. Gobble is confused and doesn’t know what to do.

Valerie turns as white as her dress. Keira just smiles blankly like Laki said she’s going to go buy moomoo milk at the store. Abigail slaps her forehead.

That’s moving really fast. Your mind reels. You’re not even married yet!

“Herb?” Abigail snaps her fingers by your head. You’re too lost in thought, though.

“Maybe I could find a job...” You mutter to yourself.

Wait. She’s just angry, isn’t she?

“There it is.” Abigail laughs, apparently recognizing your realization. “She had you going for a second there, huh? And the way you instantly started thinking about getting a job?” She laughs. “Pretty admirable, in a sucker sort of way. Cute.”

You still weren’t sure until Abigail confirmed she was joking. You’re both humiliated and a little grateful that she cleared that up.

“Cute?” Valerie repeats.

Abigail rolls her eyes. “In a platonic way. Yeesh. But uh, still, don’t tell Laki I said that.”

“UNRELENTING AGGRESSION!” Laki shouts from across the gym, directing her Chatot. You’re still sort of mentally shaken and only half paying attention to the battle. It looks like Chatot is trying to use all the water to help it’s sound attacks. But Laki just said before that the rain was making it hard for moves like Grass Whistle.

And then you see her plan. As the Bulbasaur tries to fire attacks, Chatot uses soundwaves to create waves in the water to block them. It dampens some, blocks others, and fails complete in some cases, but it does seem to make a difference. At the same time though, you can see how trying to fly under the weight of the water is draining Chatot’s energy.

Still, through some miracle of timing and relentlessness, Chatot manages to get in there and use Peck until Bulbasaur is unable to battle.

“You’ve done well.” He congratulates her. “A skilled battler if I’ve ever seen one.”

“You’re not angry?” She asks.

“No. But I am warning you now, that your own anger, as useful as you might have found it today, is not your ally. I can see a lot of anger in you. If you’re not able to control it, it will rot the roots of your relationships.”

Laki is about to shout something off, but she stops herself and bows. “Thank you for the advice.”

“Thank you for a thrilling battle.” He says as he bows, then comes up with a badge. “Please stick around. I’d like for you to wish on a new seed, as is tradition for all victors here.”

Laki mareepishly comes back to you, showing you her new badge. “Uh, so yeah. I think I got a little heated there and said some stuff. Just forget that happened, okay? Don’t get weirded out or scared or anything.”

“Well,” you hold her hand. “I’m fine with whatever happens, as long as we can face it together.”

Laki turns a deep red. “Do you know what you’re saying? Jeez, Soft Hands. Talk like that and you’re going to scare me off.” She moves her toes together and looks down while both hands hold yours. “Seriously. You're inviting trouble just saying something like that.”

Not knowing what else to do, you give her a quick kiss on the lips.

Bella nods in approval and your small group shares a tension dissolving laugh.

“Sorry! Sorry!” Hana comes rushing in. “The guard let me in. Sorry about the hold up.”

“What’d you catch?” Valerie asks.

“A boot.” Hana looks down. “He said it was a nice gesture to clean up the waterway. I think he just felt sorry for me, though.”

“Ahem.” The gym leader coughs for your attention. “Young man. Herb. You are still interested in battling, are you not?”

“Go on.” Laki pushes you forward. “He doesn’t get mad easily so I don’t know what advice to give other than doing your best. He’s not that tough.”

Abigail kicks the ground. “He’s pretty tough...”

“What sort of battle would you like? I’m always happy to oblige the style you choose, within reason.” He gives a friendly smile. It’s weird. You really only see a kindly old man. There’s no deception or hostility in his eyes.

“One pokemon each.” You decide. “Just like the others.”

“I hope you’re not just asking for that because I’m an old man. I can handle longer battles.”

You throw up your hands. “I didn’t mean to imply anything!”

“Relax.” He says. “I’m joking. That’s perfectly fine. You’re quite the considerate young man, though.”

“Um, thank you.” He did see that you and Laki are together, right? If it makes him upset, he’s very good at hiding it.

He nods.

“Go Herb!” Hana says from the sides. “Uh, how did everyone else's battles go? Good?”

“Yup! Went fine. No time to talk about the details though!” Abigail blurts out and quickly cups her hands around her mouth. “Yeah! Go Herb!”

You look at your pokemon. Dice is dipping his tail in the water playfully. He might have a good advantage there. Mace is testing the rainwater with very weak pulses of energy, like he’s trying to figure something out. Gobble is always ready for a fight and punches his palm, but he stops the aggressive gesture to look up to you to make sure that’s okay. Sorbet is the least anxious to go out there, not wanting to get wet, but she also doesn't want to look to weak to the others and might have something to prove. Bella is enjoying the gym layout a lot and looking very fresh. The sunlight and light rain must be good for her.

Gardevoir appears behind you. “Who will you choose?” She asks with a slight tone of impatience. She’s looking at the gym leader though. You guess he’s getting tired of waiting. To be fair, you have been standing here thinking for what’s probably a long time.

You know, I think I found the contradiction in this guy’s thinking.

There’s no two groups of people more different (in body, psychology, culture) than humans and Pokémon. But they’re still better together.

If he really believes different people should be kept apart, why train Pokémon?

Compared to how different he is from his Bulbasaur, he and Herb are practically brothers.

And I think we should say as much to him before we leave.
>>
>>2155477
The clear counter-argument to that is that many Pokemon/Human interactions are exploitation by the human side.
>>
>>2155576
Ok there N. I think more Pokémon have attacked Herb than Herb’s seen exploited by people.
>>
>>2155634
I guess I should have said Pokemon/Human relationships. But my point was there is a clear master/servant dichotomy and that's exactly what this old man is afraid of. The will of the mainland trumping that of the islands. Even with the best of intentions the islanders are no longer in control of their destiny.
>>
>>2155814
I mean, I really wouldn’t call it a master/servant relationship. Certainly not between Herb and any of his Pokémon.

If that’s how the gym leader treats his Pokémon then I guess it makes more sense why he thinks the way he does.
>>
>>2155951
Herb is In Charge of his Pokemon. This guy clearly does not want the mainlanders to be In Charge of the Loanans, so that argument wouldn't be great.
>>
>>2156053
Herb is In Charge of Bella/Gobble/Sorbet/Dice because they’re very young and don’t have experience dealing with human situations. But he’s certainly not in charge of Gardevoir, and Mace is often the one keeping Herb out of trouble. The relationship between a trainer and Pokémon is more familial than of ownership.
>>
>>2156096
Come to think of it, this was briefly touched on earlier in-quest.

“Yeah. Wrestle us. You’ve got to prove you can protect your girls. To demonstrate what you're made of.”

“Isn’t that a little...”

“Rapey?” Hana finishes. Not exactly the word you wanted to use, but you don't correct it.

“What? Oh jeez. No! Come on! This is my culture here. It’s symbolic! You don’t call catching pokemon slavery! It’s different!”

“Girls aren’t pokemon.” You say

“Humans used to be.” Laki says with conviction. “Now come at me.”

Pokemon is great for giving a lot of room to do different stories.]

The light mist and bright sunlight make a nice little rainbow in the middle of the battle area. A small creek lines the side and healthy grass fills the space between small rocks.

He throws out a pokeball as you turn to your little Grass pokemon.

“Bella, are you up to battle?”

She snaps to attention and takes on a fighting pose. Awww, she’s imitating Gobble! She even gives a thumbs up, just like him, and targets it at Laki’s Bergmite.

“Ah! What a wonderful pokemon!” The gym leader exclaims. “Very healthy looking. I can tell you take great care of her. Well fed, I’m sure.”

“Oh. Thanks!” You can’t help yourself. That was exactly the type of flattery you respond to. You look at his pokemon. Oh dear.

It’s a massive Executor with a super long neck. It takes a single step forward and you can feel the vibration in the ground ever from here.

Belladonna gulps. It’s a bit intimidating. She holds her Black Sludge tight.

“I understand you have a few badges and shards, young Herb. I hope this old man can provide some level of challenge for you.”

I can't remember exactly, but wasn't there talk about a.... It wasn't Soul eater but it was another anime inspired quest for a possibility.

Though personally I hope this one keeps going for a long long while. I know Herb's not been terribly motivated to do gyms much and do a lot of community work but I'd STILL like to see him give the league a serious shot.

As for the next quest, I wouldn't mind doing something not Pokemon-related. I'm actually really interested in seeing how you do other settings, Gobble but I'm also pretty sure I'd start missing the Pokemon quests halfway through. Oh well.

If it was another Pokemon quest, maybe we could go for a psychic as MC? Clair was really fun and it could make for a pretty different character. I'm guessing it would be hard to balance, though, but we could have some heavy drawbacks for the stronger stuff. I don't know, keeping Pokemon quests fresh is tricky.

Out of all the Pokemon quests I've read Gobble's is the best of them all. The regions, the characters and the narrative style of battle really does it for me. That being said I'd love to see Gobble do one of the game regions like Kanto. A cool ace trainer like Red would be fun, a martial artist or a psychic would be interesting too.

“Egg Bomb!” He yells in command. It roars and comes stomping forward.

“Bella! Use Attract!”

Bella glances back at you, unsure if you really called that. She looks to Laki to see if it’s okay and Laki bounces her hip out as an example.

Bella turns back to her charging opponent and mimics Lakis gesture.

You think it’s going to strike with it’s neck, but it lifts a large egg it got from seemingly nowhere, stops in its tracks, and drops it. You don’t like the way it’s looking at your little Bella.

“Now that’s a smart opening move.” He says. “I thought maybe I was being too harsh with you, but I can see I’ll have to avoid holding back! Executor! Confusion!”

Executor starts shaking its head and trying to focus on Bella. It’s strong, huge, and scary, but you can also see a noticeable difference in speed between it and Belladonna. It seems to value defensive movement over speed by its nature.

>>2156618
The thing about Mystery Dungeon is that I feel the games do a really good job by themselves. Both the mainline Pokemon games and the anime lack something that the other has, and that's why these quests are so good. There's also the more mature themes and all, but mainly it's the fact that the adventure itself is more implied than actually experienced in the source material.
Mystery Dungeon, however, has really good characters, development and plot already, so I personally don't feel the need for a MD quest.

Of course, that's just opinions and I'd read and enjoy anything Gobble wrote.

Exeggutor suddenly becomes addicted to bellas toxic due to the infatuation.
>>
“Toxic!” You shout. Bella plays with the Sludge in her hands for a moment, gets herself into position, then takes off at her opponent. She runs up the side of a small rock and leaps. Oh no! What’s she doing!

Her tiny body floats through the air in a soft spin. You think she misheard you until she slaps the Toxic into one of Exeggutor faces. It moans at

It’s Confusion is slow to arrive, and doesn’t look like it was as strong as it could have been. Maybe it’s just that Bella’s better able to take the blow. It still hurts, but you thought it would be a lot more hurtful that it was. She must have a boost to her defensive abilities. Her healing from the sludge doesn't hurt, either.

“Very good!” He compliments. “It’s time for us to play smart. Knock Off! Remove that item it’s holding! Switch heads for who is in charge to disregard the Attract!”

Crud! Does that work?

The massive pokemon starts charging forward again. It twists it’s next around to so a different head is in front, but it looks like an uncomfortable position to be in. You wonder if the trade off is worth it, because it’s ability to react and it’s aim will probably suffer.

The giant Grass pokemon charges at your poor, tiny Bella. Oh gosh you can’t even look! She must be paralyzed with fear because she’s not moving.

You cover your eyes, but peak through your fingers anyway.

Belladonna winks and Exeggutor stops cold. At least, it’s legs stop. The rest of it and it’s hefty weight keeps going. It rolls over her, only inches away from touching her. It rolls and slams onto it’s back.

Bella leaps onto it’s belly and reaches up into the sky. The sunlight, the light mist, the vibrant energy of this place all help her boost her strength. You can almost see her sucking in the sunlight and the very aether around her into herself. When it’s over, she’s bursting with power. Her muscles strain and flex. Her presence is almost scary to you. And her grin...well, you’re starting to worry about the poor Exeggutor now. Bella’s strength looks unreal.

“AWESOME!” Laki shouts. “YES!”

Exeggutor doesn’t look like he has that much of a chance left, but the gym leader isn’t calling off the match. It doesn’t seem like it’s in any danger though, so you guess he might be planning one last move to try to reverse the situation. With Toxic taking it's toll, it's only a matter of time unless there's a miracle.

“Poison Jab!

Bella pulls her fist back, and a sharp poison point of energy forms on her petal-filled fist. Her evil grin as she’s about to finish her opponent is a little concerning, but you’re sure that’s just her showing off and not the face of someone about to smite their enemies beyond what’s legal in a pokemon battle. Belladonna couldn’t actually seriously hurt someone, right? Oh gosh you hope she goes easy.

“Zen Headbutt!”

Wait, what?

A head on the end of a very long neck comes flying in. She adjusts herself to face it and strikes out, hitting the neck. At the same time, the egg-shaped head slams into her.

“A cross counter!” Abigail shouts.

Bella flies back. Even with her increase strength, her weight just isn’t close enough to keep her from lifting off. At the same time, Exeggutor cries out in pain. That attack hurt a lot. Even with what you assume its many years of experience and training, it’s the underdog in terms of strength right now. The execution of it’s technique does seem a sliver more polished, though.

Bella recovers in mid air before sliding off the arena. She stabs into the ground to stop herself.

Exeggutor breathes heavily as it somehow gets to it’s feet. Toxic is just about done running through him. He can’t take this for much longer. It can barely keep standing.

Bella is deeply hurt from that attack. You suspect that under other circumstances, she’d be out like a light.

She stands tall despite her injuries. You can see a lot of Laki in her right now. She lowers herself and gets ready to charge.

“Bella! Pin Missile!

“Psyshock! Do your best!”

Bella doesn’t waste any time. She throws both arms up and unloads a storm of tiny little pins at the massive pokemon. She a direct challenge the the vertically falling rain. Hers is shinier, prettier, stronger, and strong enough to push her opponent back.

And to it’s credit, the pokemon tries to hang on. It’s eyes even glow, and for a moment you worry. But the glow fades and Exeggutor comes crashing down.

You sigh in relief. Bella though, slowly walks towards her opponent. Doesn’t she know it’s over?

“Good work, Exeggutor.” The gym leader quickly retrieves his pokemon to her disappointment. “And you too, Bella.”

She turns back to him. Her frustration in no longer being able to show off her new, temporary strength is blunted a little from his compliment.

“You took on a opponent many times your age and experience and came out on top. You moved with grace and acted with strength. You must have a good trainer, but I suspect the both of you could not have managed such a fine victory without the efforts of the other. There’s a strong bond there.”

She’s completely subdued now. She’s grinning from ear to ear with happiness. Still full of energy, she leaps into your arms. After some quick petting and praise, she leaves your hands and leaps to Laki.

“That really was the perfect selection. Her Leaf Guard ability stopped me from using some of my more utilitarian moves. Very wise.”

Oh. He’s really heaping on the praise. You feel like you should say something back.

“Oh. Well, thanks! Exeggutor was very impressive too. He pushed really hard and didn’t give up.”

He laughs. “Ah. Flattery won’t save you on the day of removal.”

“W-what?”

He laughs harder. “Kidding. Kidding. It’s actually a multistage plan with incentives. Carrots over sticks, you see. It’s all in my book.”

“Oh.” You scratch the back of your head. “Um, on a different topic, do you have any advice? Anything from the battle that stuck out at you.”

He scratches his chin. “She’s ready to move on to the next stage.” He says. “She’s bursting with energy. She’s clearly mastered her form. I recommend evolving her at your earliest convenience.”

“But...Bella’s my youngest pokemon. I had her in an egg.”

“Believe me. I understand how you feel. But different pokemon advance and grow at different rates. I’ve seen some Caterpie unable to evolve after a decade and some within only a week of hatching. But time always moves forward for them. You can’t always fight change.” He says, but his voice and posture changes a little in mid sentence.

You glance back at Belladonna. It’s not that you want to hold her back, but that’s a big change for her. Going to her final form so quickly...it just feels so sudden.

“Would you like a Shiny Stone? I have many. It wouldn’t be a bother. I could even oversee the evolution if you’re unsure. Doing it now while she has her strength up from Growth would make it very easy for her, and be a great reward for her efforts, I’m sure.”

>Yes please. Offer her the stone now after explaining to her and getting her consent.

Man, this gym leader has really gripped me. He’s different from other nationalistic movement leaders in that his rhetoric isn’t based on a fear of a particular people, but rather that cultural change means destruction.

It would almost be convincing if it weren’t for his ideas of blood purity. The insinuation that Jane *shouldn’t exist* is pretty fucked up.

It’s interesting to think about everyone’s reaction to him. Valerie quickly equated him with other nationalistic, anti-immigrant movements.

Personally, I was thrown by how tactics used against racist ideas won’t apply here. Proving that we’re just as good as anyone else won’t prove anything to him because he doesn’t care if we’re a good person or not, only that we’re different.

I would have thought that Mace would like this guy, since Mace also believes that change means identity death. But instead, Mace seemed to recognize him and already distrusted him. I wonder what he knows?

Gardevoir also provides some insight. The fact that he hid his annoyance shows that he’s not exactly wearing everything on his sleeve like he seems to. He may be arguing in an intellectually dishonest manner, omitting or replacing parts of his actual beliefs to make his argument stronger.

Laki’s got to be conflicted. Maybe as much as Keira just was. I want to have Herb ask Laki’s opinion on if his presence hurts anyone.

Speaking of Keira, this can’t be an easy follow up for her, but she’s at least better prepared for it now.

Hana’s an interesting one. Unless she was chatting during our match, she doesn’t know about this guy’s history. And if she does, what does she think? Does she even consider herself Loanan in the same way Laki or Keira do? Way back at the start of the quest, Palm said anti-mainlanders used her accident as a propaganda piece. Does Hana know that?

I can only imagine that Herb would find this encounter depressing and draining. He’ll probably also want to call his family and double-check that they’re settling in well and without the harassment of any less polite nationalists. It’ll give us a chance to hear mom’s thoughts on our relationship at least.

Personally, I think that the mingling of cultures serves to make both of them change and grow, in a good way. I don’t know if Herb has had any impact on this guy, but maybe Keira, Hana, or Valerie will battle him and exchange some choice words.

I wonder what people would think if Herb got his Tookoo recorded...
>>
>>2157503
I just thought of this, but if we kiss Hana for good luck:

>Oh? Are you going to try to incense me with your plans of giving birth to halfling children too?

>I’m fucking barren you greasy old prick!
>>
>>2157578
Also, for when we say goodbye, while it’s probably too dramatic:

>Goodbye,young Herb.

>Goodbye, and thank you for being honest. I wouldn’t want to have mistakenly respected you.
>>
>>2157325
>Yes please. Offer her the stone now after explaining to her and getting her consent
>>
>>2157587
What's not to respect? The guy sounds like he's totally in the right to be honest.

No need to be catty and aggressive with someone who has only been kind to us just because he doesn't like globalism and is worried about his culture.

>>2157325
>Yes please. Offer her the stone now after explaining to her and getting her consent.
If there was ever a time for it, now would be the time.
>>
We should teach Bella Toxic Spikes, Stun Spore and Aromatherapy before she evolves. Maybe Synthesis too but that at least is a Roserade move tutor attack.
>>
>>2158659
Like I said, it’d be almost convincing if it weren’t for the blood purity stuff.

A smile and a joke doesn’t excuse pro-segregation efforts.

>>2158690
Gobble said before that moves that would normally be cut off by evolution aren’t in this quest. Although I still think it’d be easier to learn them before evolving.

Plus I don’t trust this guy.
>>
>>2158816
The blood purity stuff seems to be a tertiary concern for him if it's a concern at all, and ultimately that's a factor that we seem to be latching on to, not him.

I'll remind you that we met an operative for what I assume is his organization, and they literally extended us an invitation to join because we seemed like we were open minded about them protecting their culture. Furthermore, Abigail has more of a dog in this fight then we do, and she seemed to be rather nonplussed by it.
>>
>>2158842
So should we go back to the mainland then? Or stay and believe that we make Loanah a worse place?

Honestly you can have whatever immigration policy strictness you want but don’t try to get rid of the people that are already there.
>>
Are Herb/Val/Jane/Hana citizens Gobble?
>>
I wonder if this guy would want Hana in the country? She’s a native born ethnic Loanan but she’s less interested in observing Loanan culture than Herb. If this guy wouldn’t want her out of the country it’d be hypocritical, and if he does want her out of the country it’d dive Herb a good reason to be mad.

I wonder what Laki thinks of Hana’s attitude towards Loanan culture?
>>
Hey has Herb used pet names for the girls?

Honey, sugar, and sweetie all seem obvious. But are there others?

If the girls are being grouchy we could call them “salt and vinegar”.

And when they’re sweet, “peaches and cream”

I’m also partial to sugar-beet, honey-melon, and moon-pie.
>>
>>2159878
I think the dude would be happy with mainlanders staying if they preserve alolan culture. I doubt mainlanders are that considerate though, from what I've seen Irl the old fart has a point. Not a lethal one but one that can still wound and draw blood.
>>
>>2159878
He's not planning to force people to leave, he just wants to incentivize it. Its probably the best way to do it, considering how the mainland would probably react to a forceful removal.

If you're willing to take a cash payout to leave the islands, you probably aren't that invested in living there.
>>
I feel like this guy is a real good example of letter vs. spirit. He’s phrasing everything nice and polite, but the central spirit of the message is that foreigners are different and that’s bad and you can’t get along with them and eventually they’ll ruin the country.
>>
>>2161491
I think you're just taking it really personally and extrapolating it all the way out to full on racial supremacy or something.

The guy loves his culture and doesn't think mainlanders are integrating well, so he's reaching for the most obvious solution available with a minimum of actual malice.

Instead of getting angry with him for having a different opinion then you, in this situation you try and come up with a solution that makes everyone happy or you just accept that you're going to have a difference in opinion and let it slide without getting angry, which is exactly what he's doing.

If he was being antagonistic I'd be right there with you, but that's not the case.
>>
>>2161523
It’s a bit more than a difference of opinion. He wants Herb and his family out of the country. (The place Mom was able to find work.) He is actively a leader trying to get them out of the country.

Either Herb disagrees with him and should try and stay, (which right now means arguing the point with an anti-mainlander leader) or he agrees and should start making plans to move.

This guy might be polite but he’s still an antagonist.
>>
>>2161595
>He wants Herb and his family out of the country.
No, he wants mainlander culture to leave the country, specific individuals leaving are only incidental and a requirement if he doesn't want their culture to get slowly diluted.

Herb is totally fine because he's receptive to island culture. And honestly, I don't need to speak for the man, we can ask him ourselves once the quest is back online.

And if he does tell he wants us gone we'll argue with him, and we'll likely win. But we can do that without being a snotty little punk about it.
>>
>>2161687
How would you measure whether someone brings mainlander culture? Laki has travelled, and is familiar with mainlander culture. Should she be incentivized to leave? Polu is enamoured with the “Hollywood” equivalent, and holds a different religious view than most native born Loanans. Should he be incentivized to leave? Hana has no desire to integrate herself. Should she be incentivized to leave? Kiera was pretty resentful of the clergy for a while. Should she have been incentivized to leave? We know how he feels about Jane, and any kids she has will be quarterlings or halflings.

So if we’re charitable and say he really isn’t judging people based on race or nationality, how does he plan on determining who should stay and who should go?

I’m very suspicious of this guy because I’m suspicious of any plan for segregation. But yeah, you’re right that it’s better to ask him questions once we can before acting up. But we can use this time to prepare those questions at least. What would you ask? Just, “do you want me and my family to leave?” ?

I’d certainly challenge the idea that diversity leads to discord and purposelessness. People are better together than segregated by race/nationality/religion/whatever it is you think determines a person’s culture.
>>
>>2161783
The thing about it is the guys not really in the right or the wrong he's in a dead zone. I do truly understand what he's getting at some people just can't get along with other cultures despite what you think. I've seen one bad case in particular that made me think about segregation and how sometimes it's for the better.
>>
>>2161783
They're meant to leave if they take the fucking incentive to leave. If they leave, they clearly don't give a shit about staying. Full stop.
>>
>>2161876
But who is the incentive offered to? And what is the incentive? If you offer a lump sum of cash to everyone to move out, you don’t get people moving out because they don’t share Loanan cultural values, you just get a mass exodus of Loanah’s poorest families, (which probably aren’t the people who moved in for the new industry jobs.)

And even then, it’s not like offering an incentive can’t be immoral. If I offered someone 200$ to stab themself, i’m not morally neutral, I’m preying on the poor, which is wrong.
>>
>>2161910
You're asking a bunch of questions you don't have answers to and using them as your entire basis for being upset. Maybe instead of leveling all kinds of accusations at the fucker you should, I don't know, ask him?

Or maybe you should just call him a douchebag based on what you think he might say.
>>
>>2161934
Planning out questions to ask him to find out if he’s actually as bad as I suspect is exactly what I’m doing.
>>
>>2161979
Just a dude worried about his culture and changing demographs, it's not easy being on the receiving end of a culture shift, especially if you have any nationalistic ideals/tendencies to begin with.
>>
>“When one central authority rules over multiple, distinct peoples, it’s called empire.“

Honestly it sounds more like a call for a more representative governing body. It’s not an empire if everybody’s the same in the government’s eyes.
>>

[I'm glad he's gripped you. I hope I'm not overstating this, but I'm trying to avoid having any of my personal views be pushed in this quest or make direct references to real world issues. Some of the stuff I felt would be appropriate to touch on in the setting has become pretty big in political talk these days and I don't want anything to be considered as a reference to some specific topical issue or anything.

I also don't want character traits to be conflated with ideals they believe in. An asshole can still be 'right' and a heroic character can still be 'in the wrong' and all that. I like to consider it more just what the character would believe in given their life and ideals than anything. Sorry if I'm rambling on this point, I just want to avoid hamfisted topical commentary. I might be a lewd fanfic QM but even I have standards.]

In agreement here. Change is hard, and his concerns are valid. Our biggest issue is with his proposed solutions.

I think the only way to preserve the Loanan culture is to turn the tables and force their culture onto the mainland. It wouldn't be easy, by any stretch of the imagination. But change is inevitable, and that would hold even if they successfully kept mainlanders out. After all, future Loanans might not safeguard their own traditions and cause their own identity to stray from what currently exists.

Ultimately, the stasis he's looking for will never come to be. His best bet is to spread their culture far and wide, and make sure, however weakly it may be, that it influences as many future generations of people as possible.

Also, hi Gobble!

Seeing some of what Val puts up with on the contest circuit paired with her phone calls to Hana would be nice. Just a day or so in the life to get an idea of why she's so stressed and why her friends seem to matter so much in helping her relax.

Well, I'm a bit distracted since all the questions I really wanna ask are directed towards the gym leader, especially seeing what he thinks of Hana, and how Mace got a read on him so quick.

Are you keeping a list of the previous suggestions? I wouldn't want to repeat myself too much and be a pester.

How old is Mace again? Older than the great split, or younger? Older than the protector, or younger?

Other than that...

I gotta say, I'm not too interested in the sexual parts of the lewdbins. They're good, but it's the emotional charge they carry that's important to me. Which sex acts they are don't really matter too much. (especially since it seems Herb changed out of his disguise before powerbanging Hana) Well, maybe seeing Herb top/dom Laki. Or have Hana top/dom Herb or Hana. But other than that, I'd like to see if Laki's been scared into wanting to use protection since Herb's response to her outburst. And also, now that Laki's said he could "scare her off", I wonder if Herb's scared about jumping the gun on "I love you"? But if he waits too long, it would seem like he favors Hana...

It would be cute to have Herb ask Hana how to have the guts to put himself out there like she did, but to Laki.

I think the biggest thing I've wanted for the longest is more development of the relationship between Hana and Laki. Their relationship doesn't even have a canon name for it yet (though you did seem to like my suggestion of "sal-mates"). I want to know how both of them feel about each other. What does Hana think the expectations of this type of relationship are? She's probably gotten them from her three foster moms. What does Laki expect? How are those expectations different?

Speaking of canon names for things, did you decide not to call Loanah's faith "Mewori"?

I was also earnest when I was asking what everyone's citizenship status was. Though perhaps Loanah doesn't have the same cultural value on it as the States.

Oh, and a snippet about how news of Herb's shard-gathering travels would be cool. I think a bin would be a good way to flesh out the vague idea of "reputation". Certainly, people don't seem to be underestimating him anymore.

Merry Christmas Gobble! Hope you and everyone here is having a wonderful season!

So Laki wants us to breed her and her wide hips, right? How does everyone feel about this? Timeskip while we make a family?

Also, if another girl was added to the harem, who would you want it to be?
>>

Timeskip would put us past our journey, wouldn't it? We'd need to put that off until we were finished with our adventure, basically.

I remain in Keira's camp above all others, but Val would be interesting too. I'd be worried about Jane fitting in given her... quirks. Abigail is a newcomer and doesn't seem interested, but it'd make for an entertaining dynamic with Laki.

I'm more interested if either Laki or Hana would want to bring in another girl eventually and who it would be. Would they want to bring in anyone we currently know, or would they prefer someone outside our current circle?

I'm now picturing Hana and Laki doing professional interviews with harem candidates in an office environment, complete with professional attire. And all Hana can think of is that she really wants to get into a roleplay scenario with Herb and Laki, maybe drawing in someone else depending on which exact fantasy she settled on.

The hatesex between Lake, Jane, and Herb would be insane.
>>
>>2177303
Eh, I'm not big hatesex. But if we wanted to go a normal dominance route, maybe we could set up a lewdbin where Herb takes part in the fertility ritual and a bunch of girls join in. Laki and Jane do their usual one-up routine, and the subject of sexual prowess comes up. Keira jumps in to 'referee' on how well each of the girls pleasure Herb, and everyone goes along with it (somewhat confusedly) since it is a ritual and Keira is the resident priestess. There are totally referees in a fertility rituals if she says there are.

Alternately, Hana brings it up to Keira and she goes along with it. As the event goes on, Hana keeps suggesting more and more lewd things for Keira to have the participants do, one of which involves Laki and Jane servicing Herb at the same time.

...Pretty sure this would be super non-canon. Maybe it'd be better to imagine how Hana would chart out a Herb/Laki/Jane sex fic in her head, complete with mis-characterizations of each of them based on how Hana sees them.

No expanding the harem for me, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Herb and the girls trying out swinging. “Hey it’s Laki’s Birthday, Hana and I want to invite you, (Valerie) to the bedroom with us.”

>>2177334
I desperately want to read Hana’s erotic fiction.
>>
I'm up for expanding the harem, but only in a very limited sense. I'd -love- for the girls to want to bring other people in and I'm personally rooting for Kiera and Valerie with a slight leaning towards Kiera.

I just don't want to stretch the group dynamic TOO much but at the same time I feel like there's possibilities for at least one more person to be involved, Valerie being the most likely considering Laki fetish, Hana being her closest friend on the island, and by god I can only imagine what Valerie would think about being pressed in between Laki and Herb or what Hana's face would be like if something like that happened.

Meanwhile Kiera's still kind of on that verge of so many things, a whole bunch of stuff's changed for her in such a short time. Sexual realization, spiritual and religious discovery, her own plans for the future... I really hope we can spend more time with her in the future, not even for aura stuff but just to give input and be there for her to vent and discuss her own ideas.

Don’t forget to archive this somebody.
