You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Currently, though, you were sitting across from Dorothea, here ostensibly to answer for that little fiasco that was your infiltration of the Boneyard. Sure, you managed to escape with some valuable intel in the form of the Boneyard's maintenance server, but your extraction was far from clean.

If you could call shooting down an entire squadron of VF-171s clean.

"You certainly have a way of making things more... colorful." Dorothea sighs. "Theft of government property? Six CDF VF-171s shot down? With all that destruction we might as well have just blasted the whole base from orbit."

"Hey, we didn't kill anyone at least, right?" You shrug.

"Officially, at least." Dorothea gives you a slightly annoyed stare. "The base pilots may be fine, but I do seem to recall you mentioning shooting two people claiming to be MPs."

"Yeah, there was that." You admit. "But Karla's already combed the base records and there's nothing mentioning personnel deaths. And not a single peep of anybody named Arbil."

"The man who tried to recruit you." Dorothea grimaces. "I suppose that's more than enough proof the CDF at best has been infiltrated, at worst is fully complicit with the CLF."

"I suppose so." You nod. "Karla and her team are already trying to decrypt the server I nabbed from the base. Hopefully it'll give us more leads."

"Hopefully." Dorothea sighs as she sips her tea. "I suppose it's good to hear something went right for once."

"Something wrong?" You raise an eyebrow at Dorothea's foul and tired mood.

"What isn't?" Dorothea grumbles.

"Bad news from Earth?" You guess as you lean back in your seat.

"Did I make it that obvious?" Dorothea shakes her head. "It's nothing you need to know about."

"Come on, it's not like there's anybody else here." You shrug. "Besides, it looks to me like you want to get it off your chest."

Dorothea gives you a cautious gaze, as if she was contemplating whether it was worth breaking protocol, but you see one blink take much longer than normal, you could tell that she finally caved.

"Ever since our first skirmish with the Zentradi, and the attempted kidnapping of Amy, I've sent a fresh request for reinforcements and support back to Earth." Dorothea frowns. "Unfortunately, additional fleet assets are still unavailable. They're still occupied trying to tie down the Brisingr Cluster."

"And the CLF?" You wonder.

"The NUNS military considers it an internal colony matter and won't get officially involved." Dorothea explains. "Which means they're going to kick the problem over to Intelligence, and I doubt they'll be in a sharing mood when it comes to operations."

"So, that means..."

"...it means we've been sent up the creek without a bloody paddle." Dorothea pinches the bridge of her nose in frustration. "I'm expected to hold this sector with what I already have on hand. And it is not enough. Not nearly enough."

Dorothea then finally finishes off her tea, and that's when it clicks. That odd, faint smell in the room that had piqued your interest.

Alcohol.

More specifically, rum. Had she been spiking her tea with it?

"It's rude to drink an not offer any to your guest, you know." You point out with a smug smile.

Dorothea pauses, betraying her surprise to your comment before shaking her head with a slight smile.

"I guess I can't hide anything from you, can I?"

"Not when you make things so obvious." You retort.

"Well, I suppose I can spare a bottle or two." Dorothea chuckles.

"Just a glass." You say simply.

"Of course. Can't afford to get completely drunk, right?" Dorothea chuckles as she pours two glasses, sliding one to you.

You pick up the glass and raise to her in a toast.

"To things, going right, I guess."

"To things going right." Dorothea says in agreement, returning the toast.

And you both down your glasses. As always, Dorothea's selection was impeccable, the spice of the run stimulating your body from your tongue all the way down to your stomach.

"Thank you for that." Dorothea smiles with appreciation. "There's not many other people on this ship I would trust to have a drink with."

"I suppose I should take that as a compliment." You chuckle.

Still, you were starting to feel that Dorothea was getting to dismiss you or move on to a new subject. You were both still on duty, after all, and she was a busy Admiral. You probably only had time for one more question.

"So, speaking frankly..."

"You mean we're not right now?" Dorothea snorts.

"...I was wondering how you ACTUALLY feel about all this." You finish. "You can put up that typical British stoicism all you want but if you really were feeling calm you wouldn't be drinking this much."

"Speaking frankly?" Dorothea leans forward, putting her head very close to yours. Uncomfortably so. "I'm tired. And frustrated. I feel like I'm trapped in a pit that I have no way of escaping as officers and politicians thousands of light years away drop more and more dirt on top of me."

"That's.... a very vivid image." You gulp.

"The price of early 'success', I suppose." Dorothea grumbles. "I pulled off a 'miracle' once, and they expect me to do it again."

You wonder what exactly she's referring to when you see her hand unconsciously reaching for a second bottle.

"Admiral, I don't think that's a good idea." You say, calmly putting your hand over hers, halting its motion. "You've still got a fleet to run, don't you?"

"W-wha?" Dorothea blinks in confusion and looks down at her and your hand, finally realizing what's happened. "A-ah!"

Dorothea quickly pulls her hand away and coughs to regain her composure. Even this wasn't enough to truly crack that British stoicism.

"That will be all, Har- Captain." Dorothea quickly corrects herself without missing a beat. "Also, we have another assignment for you. Lieutenant Williams should have more details."

"Yes ma'am." You nod as you get up, salute, and exit the office.

However, out of the corner of your eye, right before the closes, you can swear you catch sight of Dorothea taking a big sigh of relief.

...huh.

Your first hunch was to check out the hangar, and sure enough, Lara was there, personally checking up on her VF-19, tracing her hand along the hull as her eyes scanned her craft for any faults or imperfections.

"Hey, Lara." You say as you approach.

"Cap! Good to see ya back!" Lara's expression brightens considerably when she sees you. "Heard you got into a dogfight without me!"

"Ah, I wasn't really doing much fighting, honestly." You shrug. "How were things on your end? Amy didn't give you too much trouble, did she?"

"Nah, we just hung out while we were waiting for you to come back. Watched some more shitty movies and her taught her a few basics in piloting." Lara grins. "Amy's off doing practice right now, though, so she's gonna be busy for a while."

"Figured." You nod. "The Admiral said something about a mission?"

"Yeah." Lara nods and pats a large cylindrical object mounted underneath the wing of her VF-19. "We're gonna have to deploy these ahead of the fleet."

"Some kind of weapon?" You frown as you examine the device. It didn't really look like a conventional weapon, though you could tell there were fold quartz components in it.

"Uh, I don't quite exactly remember what the eggheads said, but it's some sorta fold wave amplifier?" Lara scratches her head. "Apparently we're gonna be intercepting a Zentradi force that's trying to use a nebula to cover their advance. Fold space is all wonky in there so these things are supposed to stabilize the area so Amy's song can work!"

"And they need us to deploy these?" You frown.

"Kelly's got his hands full flying CAP and recon missions." Lara shrugs. "And only TSUs are certified to handle this sort of equipment, anyways. Command was very specific on that."

"Great." You roll your eyes. "Any timeframe on this."

"As long as we get 'em deployed before the fleet arrives." Lara explains. "So, like, within the next day or two."

"So, it's just going to be us two." You frown.

"There'll be a Cateye out there to provide us some sensor support, but yeah, just us two!" Lara smiles. "Ain't it great?"

"Guess it'll have to do." You sigh.

"Great!" Lara grins and points to your VF-19. "Your bird's already been kitted out, so we're good to go once we get the green light!"

"Right." You nod, when you suddenly hear an alarm notifying you of an incoming large craft.

The hangar crew immediately clear deck space for a large cargo hauler which lands in the space. The bay doors on the hauler open up to reveal the VF-4 you had stolen from the Boneyard.

"HOLY SHIIIIIIIIT!" Lara squeals as she practically teleports over to the hauler. "IS THAT AN HONEST TO GOD VF-4?!?!"

"Looks like it is." You nod, chuckling at Lara's enthusiasm.

"DUDE, DO YOU KNOW HOW RARE IT IS TO FIND A WORKING MODEL!?" Lara's eyes shine. "Looks like an original build, too! Not a reproduction! Where'd it come from!?"

"I may or may not have been involved in procuring it from some people who may or may not have being doing bad things." You say very, VERY vaguely.

"Works for me." Lara says, not even missing a beat. "Can I fly her?"

"Maybe after this mission." You chuckle. "Besides, she's not in the greatest of shape right now. Needs a lot of TLC."

"Which I am more than willing to provide!" Lara winks. "C'mon, then! Let's get this mission DONE, then!"

"Sure thing." You nod.

You and Lara promptly load up in your fighters and launch. Leaving the Pacifica and the rest of the fleet behind you, you both fold jump to your next destination.

Both you and Lara defold right on the edges of a massive gas cloud. The nebula that Lara had been talking about. In front of you, it just looked like a massive wall of purple dust and smoke, limiting your visual range.

As far as your sensors were concerned, that nebula may as well be a solid wall. You couldn't get any sort of accurate readings, with the nebula's particles giving you all sorts of false returns and data. Your onboard systems simply weren't powerful enough to pierce the galactic veil.

"Damn, looks like our Cateye support got held up." Lara grumbles. "Typical."

Well, you weren't all to eager to enter into a nebula when all you could rely on to spot the enemy was limited visibility. Then again, just dawdling out here aimless could be just as dangerous, leaving you exposed targets out in open space.

"Let's just go." You say as you gradually throttle up. "No sense just sitting around waiting."

"Straight in, damn the torpedoes, huh? Sure thing!" Lara says happily.

And so the two of you progress into the nebula. The sensor interference gets so bad that you just shut them off altogether. Thankfully, you still had inertial guidance, so all you needed to do was fly in a relatively straight line and drop your fold emitters at regular intervals.

"Shit, this place is kinda creepy, honestly." Lara muses as she deploys one of her emitters, her Valkyrie barely visible in the dust, reduced to a fuzzy silhouette. "You feel kinda cold inside, don't you? Really gives me the heebie jeebies."

"Now that you say that..." You don't exactly feel cold, but you feel an... emptiness inside you. Now that you were aware of it, it felt a little unsettling. "Yeah, let's just get this done and get out of here."

"Don't have to say that twice." Lara replies. "All right, last emitter dropped."

"Okay, let's turn around and-" You pause as a glint of light catches your eye. You turn your head and squint hard.

"Cap?" Lara asks, curious as you why you weren't change course.

"Wait a minute..." You squint even more. And that's when you recognize what you're seeing.

Zentradi Regulds. It looked a small squad of them. Four standard types and one scout type. Some kind of patrol?

"Five contacts. Four battlepods and one scout." You report to Lara. "One o' clock low."

"Wait- oh, I see 'em." Lara confirms. "We gonna jump them?"

You weren't comfortable just leaving these Zentradi battlepods at your back in order to leave this nebula. There was always the chance they detect you and jump you or accidentally stumble into you. Then again, you had the initiative right now and could jump them, but the nebula limited your options. Missiles would be right out.

Then again, you got another idea. Maybe you could tail these guys back to their carrier...

"Hold it, Lara, we're not here to fight." You grunt. "They haven't seen us. Let's disengage while we can."

"Fine, fiiiiiiiine." Lara sighs.

The two of you turn your Valkyries around. You couldn't safely fold jump within the nebula, so you needed to get out of this damn dust cloud first before reaching safety.

Thankfully, your greatest fear of getting jumped from behind by a squadron of angry Zentradi never materializes. Both you and Lara are able to disengage safely and exit the nebula. Hopefully those emitters you dropped would actually work when the real battle came.

Goddamn you weren't looking forward to flying in that mess in full combat conditions.

"Man, pretty boring mission, right?" Lara sighs.

"I'd prefer a boring mission over one that gets us killed." You reply as you fold jump.

You and Lara return to Pacifica with no issues. However, as you land, you see something curious.

You catch sight of Amy sitting in the cockpit of the VF-4 you had captured.

"Huh, guess her practice is over." Lara muses.

"I can see that." You nod, wondering what to do as your VF-19 sets down. Looks like Amy hasn't even realized you and Lara had returned.

You climb up a maintenance ladder at the rear of the VF-4, staying out of Amy's potential line of sight from the cockpit. Confident that she hasn't realized your approach, you creep along the top of the VF-4 right behind the cockpit, where you could see Amy working the (thankfully disabled) controls.

"Don't worry, I got your back, Red 5!" Amy says to nobody in particular, apparently completely immersed in her little fantasy scenario as she jerks her stick to the side. "These guys are fuckin' amateurs!"

Oh man, this was just way too priceless. You just continue watching silently. As Amy keeps making fake flying and weapon firing sounds, working the stick and throttle in simulated maneuvers.

"Going in for my attack run! Keep 'em off me for a few more seconds!" Amy grunts as she makes what is presumably a sharp dive. "Almost got a target lock...

You lean down and whisper into Amy's ear.

"I HAVE YOU NOW."

"AAAAAHHHHHHH!" Amy yelps, immediately shooting up from her seat. However, the moment she does so, the top her head smashes into your forehead with a loud crack.

"OW!" You grunt.

"SHIT!" Amy yelps.

"Hahahahahaha!" Lara bursts into laughter watching this whole event unfold.

"WHAT THE FUCK, CAP?!" Amy fumes, clutching the top of her head in pain and giving you an annoyed frown.

"Sorry, I was just trying to surprise you." You laugh as you rub your forehead. "Guess I kinda underestimated what would happen."

"YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT YOU DIIIIIID!" Amy roars.

Shit, you were going to need to find a way to defuse her before she tried to attack you.

Well, you knew one surefire way to get Amy to calm down. You simply reach your hand out an headpat the girl.

"H-hey, that's no fair..." Amy whines.

"Hah! That's kinda cute, Cap." Lara laughs as she climbs up to where the two of you are. "What's it take to give me one of those."

"H-hey!" Amy whines. That's for me only!"

"Hnnnnn?" A smug grin begins to creep across Lara's face. "I wonder what the Admiral would say if she saw you two timing her like this, Cap..."

And that's when you realize, just hanging around Amy, you feel that cold, empty sensation within you when you were flying in the nebula gradually fade away.

However, you don't give it much thought. At least for now. There was going to be a fleet action soon, and you needed to prepare for it.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week. And don't forget Frontier Knight on Saturday as well as a CIMQ Christmas Special this Sunday! Don't miss them!

I'm glad Amy likes the VF-4. Since it's a trainer, once we get it fixed up Lara and Us can take her out and teach her how to fly.

Then when she gets good enough, get her a VF-19, 22 or 25 and kit it out Fire Bomber style with Speakers and Fold Emitters/Boosters.
