You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

"This one's going to be a fucking mess." Kellerman grunts.

You nod at Kellerman's blunt assessment as you little group including you, Kellerman, Lara, Julie, and Dorothea observed the holomap of the expected battlespace. Of course, the majority of it was obscured by the massive nebula you and Lara had just dropped some special fold emitters in. Amy and Karla were noticeably absent, though you suspected they were getting ready for the battle in their own way.

"Never thought they'd be crafty enough to sneak in through a nebula." Lara whistles.

"Just because they're uncultured doesn't mean they're stupid." Julie crosses her arms, obviously a bit annoyed at Lara's offhand comment. "In case you don't remember, there's an entire Zentradi military caste dedicated to military tactics and strategy."

"Right, right..." Lara huffs.

Now you were really starting to get the impression these two didn't quite get along. However, now was not the time to press into that matter.

"As we discussed before, our plan is to engage the Zentradi right as they exit the nebula." Dorothea speaks up.

Indeed, the map showed hundreds of blue dots arranged in a bowl-like formation facing the nebula. Red dots, showing simulated Zentradi ships, began emerging from the nebula right into the middle of the bowl, exposing them to a vicious crossfire.

"The idea is to eliminate the leading elements of the fleet while their command, control, and communications are interrupted with the tail elements." Dorothea continues. "This way we can effectively eliminate their fleet piece by piece rather than facing it head on."

"Sounds like a plan." Kellerman nods. "What about actually fighting in the nebula?"

"I'd rather keep the fleet out of it, but I'm not opposed to small units performing tactical actions within." Dorothea explains.

"Nice! Close in fighting is just my thing!" Julie smiles as she cracks her knuckles.

"Me and my boys will make sure nothing leaks through the net." Kellerman declares.

"Of course, we'll be deploying Amy again this time." Dorothea turns to you. "While the fold emitters you deployed will be a great help in the nebula, they still won't be as effective as the systems integrated into your Valkyrie."

"I think we'll do better confusing the enemy as they appear." You say as you cross your arms, your eyes still examining the simulated battleplan. "Any idea on enemy fleet strength?"

"Unknown, but it's certainly larger than a scouting mission." Dorothea says grimly. "We're estimating at least fifty capital ships plus support craft."

You nod at that. The current NUNS fleet strength was around three times that. A rare occasion where you'd still retain numerical superiority, but the Zentradi had reserves to spare, so any loss on your side would be felt."

"I figure we'd be able to shoot off the Big Gun when the fighting starts?" Kellerman suggests.

"The Macross Cannon?" Dorothea frowns. "It would be better to hold it reserve until the Zentradi fully commit their forces."

The Macross Cannon. You pause at the very mention of that. Short of reaction and dimensional warheads, the Macross Cannon was the most destructive weapon in the NUNS armory, capable of wiping out entire fleets in one shot.

"But won't it be better to catch their fleet by surprise?" Kellerman replies. "They don't have any idea of our fleet's already cut them off, much less our composition."

"Which they'll immediately know if we fire the cannon." Dorothea calmly points out. "And since the nebula prevents us from pinning down the exact location of the main fleet, firing blindly in there is a huge gamble."

"I'm with the Admiral on this one." You chime in. "Even if this is a larger force, the Zents are still just probing our defenses. We don't want to let them know we've got a Macross-class ship here waiting for them."

"Thank you." Dorothea nods. "If possible, I'd like to eliminate this fleet by conventional means."

"Admiral." Kellerman frowns. "This isn't like-"

"That's all." Dorothea says sternly. "Pacifica will be in position with the rest of the fleet in an hour. I suggest you use that time to prepare. Dismissed."

"What is it?" The CAG turns and crosses his arms, obviously not a man whose time was easily wasted.

"I can't help but ask, but what were you going to mention to the Admiral?"

You can see Kellerman's frown shift from one of mild annoyance to one of deep regret.

"Fine. Sure." You nod, deciding it was best not to antagonize the CAG right before a big battle.

"Forget we said anything." Kellerman turns and and heads off. "Good luck out there."

It's then that you realize that Lara has taken off ahead of you. You double time it down to the hangar, where you can clearly see the entire deck was a surge of activity. Techs scrambled to and fro, carting munitions and parts as they tried to get every Valkyrie combat ready. You spied Lara over by your Excaliburs, overseeing the final fittings.

"Hey, hey Cap!" Lara waves happily to you. "The Admiral's cleared us to use FAST Packs! This is gonna be awwwwwesome!"

FAST Packs were additional, external modules that could be mounted on Valkyries to provide extra capabilities. However, their main downside was that they were huge and bulky, which obviously made your Valkyrie an easier target. Thankfully, at least the weight was offset by the additional engine boosters mounted in the pack.

"Well, what options do we have?" You ask as you walk up.

"Well, we got the standard Super Pack, giving us a lot more missiles to clear more of those battlepods." Lara grins. "Or the Strike Pack, which has some freaking huge beam cannons to blast part capital ships."

Both sounded suitably destructive.

"And uhhh, there's this new one called the Sound Booster." Lara scratches her head. "Not quite sure how it works, but Karla says it's supposed to help boost Amy's song? Somethint like that."

"Guess I'll take the Sound Booster." You decide. "Might as well give Karla the data she wants, huh?"

"Heh, pretty brave of you to slap that on." Lara laughs and punches you lightly in the shoulder. "Don't worry, I'll keep ya covered, no problem!"

You notice that Lara had mounted a Super Pack on her own Exalibur. It was to be expected, considering her personality.

"ATTENTION ALL PILOTS." Kellerman's voice rumbles through the intercom. "WE WILL BE DEFOLDING IN TWO MINUTES. ALL SQUADRONS PREPARE TO LAUNCH."

All hangar activity immediately intensifies as hangar crew begin dashing out of the way of the taxiing Valkyries heading for the launch deck. You and Karla dash for your Excaliburs as your FAST Packs are bolted on.

"So, so." Lara says excitedly. "How are we gonna play this, Cap?"

"We'll going to play this smart." You instruct. "We'll hang back with the fleet and react accordingly."

"Awwwwwww, fine." Lara whines.

"We're a support unit first and foremost." You remind her."

"Right, right." Lara sighs.

Finally, it's your turn to launch. You and Lara catapult off. In front, the nebula loomed like a massive, solid wall. So vast it filled up your entire cockpit view. Behind, you could see the twinkling lights of the NUNS Ninth Fleet. Hundreds of ships and Valkyries ready and waiting for what's to come.

And then a familiar song begins to fill the open channel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOaSh1-d9gc

Looks like Amy was getting started, and right on time.

"Incoming contacts detected!" You hear Pacifica's sensor officer squeak. "They'll be emerging from the nebula in T minus thirty seconds!"

"All ships assume battle stations, Pacifica will be transforming into Battle Mode." Dorothea announces.

Sure enough, you look behind you to see the massive supercarrier shift into its humanoid form, like a giant Valkyrie. At the same time, the first few Zentradi ships begin to emerge from the nebula, their bulbous green prows breaking out like needs piercing a balloon.

"All units fire!" Dorothea barks.

Immediately, the twinkling lights behind you flash as particle beams lance in like rain. The first Zentradi cruiser doesn't stand a chance, its prow glowing white hot and melting into slag. The smaller destroyers and frigates don't even stand a chance, exploding almost instantly under the surprise assault.

Soon, though, more and more Zentradi ships begin to pile out of the nebula, in some cases smashing in the wreckage of their fellows or ramming into the sides and rears of allied ships as the frontline slowed or attempted to maneuver. The combination of the hail of fire and Amy's song was definitely blunting their momentum.

However, not everything was going well. Clouds of Regulds began swarming out the nebula to support the capital ships, their smaller size and faster speed letting them evade the heavy cannons of the NUNS ships.

You also begin spotting groups of Zentradi battlesuits. Most definitely ace pilots and veterans who were more formidable than the standard Reguld.

And finally, you caught sight of one crafty Zentradi cruiser, which had rammed one of its fatally damaged fellows and was using the burning hulk as a shield to advance on the NUNS firing line. Other Zentradi ships were beginning to gather behind it for protection.

"All right, that's our cue, boys"! Kellerman calls out as he signals for the Valkyries to advance and counterattack.

"Lara, feel like playing with the big boys?" You ask.

"Always the biggest." Lara laughs. "Whatcha got in mind?"

You check your sensor screen again and see a unit of four battlesuits harassing a NUNS corvette that ventured a bit too far forward and tag it.

"You see what I'm seeing?"

"Oh yeah, those'll look nice on the nose." Lara says eagerly. "I'll follow your lead in, Cap!"

You open up your throttle and your Excalibur boosts forward with a jolt of speed, pushing you back in your seat. You forgot that you had a FAST Pack equipped, which had increased your acceleration significantly. You readjust your inertial dampers to account for the extra speed as you dive in on your first engagement.

You crank the output of the Sound Booster to maximum, and your whole Excalibur shakes and vibrates as the mounted speakers go full blast, not just broadcasting over the open channels, but every possible channel and every possible wavelength of sound.

All four battlesuits immediately freeze in place as if paralyzed. Perhaps they got hit hard by the song?

Hell, even you were humming along with the tune unconsciously.

"W-whoa." Lara gasps. "That's some powerful shit right there."

"It is." You nod.

However, that's when you see the corvette's AA guns swivel the target the disabled battlesuits.

"Thanks." You nod as you boost over to the inactive battlesuits. "Lara, help me out here."

"Okay, okay..." Lara's Excalibur follows your lead.

You switch your Excalibur to Battroid mode and reach out, grabbing two of the battlesuits and pushing them forward. Lara does the same as you two home in on the Melmetzer, which you quickly recognize as a an allied Zentradi carrier. Makes sense, actually.

You instinctively glance at your sensor screen, and do indeed see a single contact, moving and and coming in FAST. Looked to be a single unit. A Meltran battlesuit, similar to the one Julie piloted, except this one was painted crimson red as it blasted through the AA defense nets of the surrounding capital ships, homing in squarely on your position.

"Coming to save her friends?" Lara grunts. "She's gonna catch us at this rate, Cap!"

Lara, you get the prisoners to the carrier, I'll handle this bandit." You order.

"You sure, Cap?" Lara asks, obviously a bit worried.

"I got it." You assure her. "Trust me."

"All right, Cap." Lara's Excalibur thrusts forward and awkwardly moves to push all four disabled battlesuits away on her own.

That just left you against this Zentradi ace, one on one.

Amy's song was still going strong, its steady beat coursing through the hull of your Excalibur. Perhaps another musical attack can fell this ace. It was worth a shot, anyways. You switch back to fighter mode and loop around, doing head to head against the rapidly approaching battlesuit.

However, before you can even flip the switch to power on the boosters, the Zentradi ace seems to predict your move, laser cannons blazing. Your pinpoint barriers absorb the initial hits, the barrier is only concentrated around your cockpit. Deathly accurate laser fire shreds into the speakers, causing them to explode and knocking your Excalibur off course. However, the battlesuit wasn't finished. As it speeds past, it reaches an arm out, grabbing onto your left wing and tearing it off like paper.

And all you can hear is deathly silence as the Zentradi ace hovers menacingly above you, laser cannons locked directly on your cockpit.

"Cap!" Lara cries as she tries to loop around to assist you, but the Ace taps her knuckle against your glass canopy. An obvious warning to Lara not to come any closer.

However, the fact that you were not dead meant this Ace had different priorities in mind.

Suddenly, your radio buzzes with badly distorted static, but you can hear one word crystal clear.

"Trade."

Your life for the prisoners, huh?

You hit your ejection button and your cockpit explodes. Explosive bolts blow your canopy off mere milliseconds before a rocket booster in your seat propels you clear of your Excalibur. The Ace, not expecting this move, is caught off guard as you zip past her battlesuit's head.

"COMING IN HOT!" Lara yells as her Excalibur swoops in in GERWALK mode, scooping you up in her arm as she unleashes a swarm of missiles at the Ace.

The Ace immediately disengages, though not from yours or Lara's heroics. A fresh squadron of VF-25s swoops in, but the Ace is gone in a flash, boosting back for the relative safety of the nebula.

"Sir, are you all right?" The squadron lead asks.

"Yeah." You nod as you crawl into the backup seat in Lara's fighter.

"New orders. Both of you are being recalled to the Pacifica immediately."

"But the fight's still going on!" Lara protests.

"Straight from the Admiral." The squadron leader says sternly.

"It must be serious." You sigh. "Let's go back, Lara."

"Your call, Cap." Lara says glumly as she turns her Excalibur around.

As she makes a beeline straight back to the Pacifica, you take the chance to look back on the overall battle. And you see that things seem to be taking a turn for the worse.

More and more Zentradi ships were pushing out of the nebula in a more organized fashion, pushing perilously close to the NUNS defense line. You wonder where exactly the Zentradi had gotten this newfound drive from when you realize something.

The channels were silent. There was no song.

Did something happen to Amy? Maybe that was why you were getting recalled-

Suddenly there's a blaze of light as a beam of golden energy spears straight through the Zentradi fleet, evaporating the entire formation and cutting a hole straight through the nebula. Once the light subsides, all that's left is ionized gas and spheres of molten slag. What few Zentradi ships remain are quickly mopped up or flee back into the nebula.

Lara brings the Valkyrie back to the Pacifica, her cannons still glowing red hot from the discharge as the plane lands.

Lara thankfully manages to land her Excalibur safely in the hangar. Already, you could see quite a few damaged Valkyries quickly being repaired, and more coming in. You're the first to step out of the cockpit when you hear someone running over.

You turn, assuming it to be a tech coming to check on you and are caught off guard when it's Amy of all people, still in her idol costume. She runs up and slides to a stop next to you, tears in her eyes.

"You... you..." Amy pauses. "YOU IDIOT!"

And that's when she punches you in the face. You feel the impact and lose your balance, falling right on your ass. Kid's definitely been practicing.

By the time the stars clear from your vision, Amy is already gone.

"Jeez, she really did a number on you. "Lara whistles. "Though between you and me, I thought what you did was pretty cool."

"Yeah... thanks." You sigh. Great. Now Amy was pissed at you.

"Amy, I'm not leaving." You say. "I'm staying by the door until you want to talk."

Silence. A silence that seemed to cut you to your very core.

You sigh. With little other choice you sit down against the wall, finally taking a deep breath to reflect on what just happened.

It's just then you realize that your hands were shaking. That's right, just a few scant minutes ago, you had a very close brush with death. Something that wasn't helped by your impulsive ejection seat ploy. Sure, it worked, but there were just as many chances of it going horribly, horribly wrong.

"I figured I'd find you here, Harry."

You look up to see Dorothea standing above you. Her face showed an expression that wasn't anger, annoyance, or disappointment. Just genuine concern, this time, with all pretenses of duty and protocol completely gone.

"Honestly, what am I supposed to do with the both of you?" She shakes her head with a sigh.

>Dorothea shoved everything aside came to see how we are doing.

Wow. She does care.

What do we know about her so far?

What I remember:

>-She's British and nearly 30 (so she and Harry are about the same age and both from Earth)

>-she's an only child with parents who have expired

>-she made admiral extremely early, possibly after pulling off a "miracle".

>-she's been sent to keep Nabaal with insufficient resources and support OR be a convenient scapegoat the big shots back on Earth can blame when Nabaal falls. She is aware of this and it bothers her.

>-She drinks to cope with stress and drinks quite a bit.

>-We are one of the few people she seems to be comfortable talking to and relaxing with who also still feels comfortable talking to and relaxing with her since she became a flag officer.

I wonder if and how much Admiral Dorothea Nelson's drinking is effecting her judgement and ability to strategize.

Also how good IS/WAS she and what was that "miracle" she pulled off in the past?

With 3 competing Zentradi fleets out there, any one of which outnumbers ours by a stupid margin, and Nabaal's local militia seeming to be at best incompetent and at worst traitorous, we can't afford having our leader boozing herself dull.

Even if we end up not pursuing a relationship with her, we should probably do what we can to get her in her best state of mind since we seems to be one of the few people she connects with.
