How to Run:
Do something you think is fun for yourself and interesting for your players. Games of this calibre are sustained by your monomaniacal madness and intent to focus on the gradual accomplishment of something.

Set up a setting, situation and story that could be enjoyable. Having a story and intention in mind helps a lot, because it helps your clarify purpose, fun and mechanics.

Pitfalls -

Dependent Dice Rolls are a bad thing. Everyone posts their action ahead of time, so having actions that rely on multiple stage rolling is terribly inconvenient ("Roll xxx stat. if you succeed, gain ppp thing when you do xxx").

Try not to have an overly mechanically complex sort of system, but have a few things that can helpfully answer a lot of WHAT IF. THe WHAT IF is 75% of the fun. I get a giant big great smile out of seeing what people come up with / try to do / attempt to fix a situation by doing.

General Tips:

Have a set phase timer and stick to it.
People's actons are theirs, never override or control what they actually do
have fair rules.

I run my games using a tablet, photshop, a prepared map and a layer with individual sprites. This is easier for me. You could probably do it all in Paint with a mouse if you wanted ( a cool spacecrawl did that ).

Come up with a setting or idea first, some general thought. Mechanics follow from that. There's ten thousand ways to make small unit tactics fun, but you don't have to - how about a skirmish where everyone controls a mercenary warband? Or a legionairy maniple?

We had to demolish one of the smaller huts to make way for moving in the scanning material and excavation tools. The technicians are set up already and siphoning off of the main power supply. That'll reduce our vulnerabilities are bit.

Unfortunately the Corpers will probably want to walk straight down this new highway we constructed, so it'll be a bit touch and go.

We do have the one fancy gift from Orbitact. They retrofitted the command APC with a designation controller for a drone bomber rack.

Mjolnir missile drones! My, it's almost like Orbitact actually wants us to celebrate christmas out here.

Well Hellion and New Guy, looks like its on you until we mobilize the reserves.

The Corpers brought in Heavy units for this. They're mean, hard and slow. Function as mobile cover for anyone standing behind them too, and their armor rates an astounding 10 so your basic weaponry will hardly dent it.

If you can get behid them though, they're a bit more vulnerable and grenades won't care about their armor if it lands on the other side of their shields. And if you get real desperate, try a magshot. Should do the trick.

The technicians are counting on ya.

Sorry Trooper Dave, we don't issue combat axes to active personnel anymore. It turns out they're field ineffecient, and besides, the shovel doubles.

You would have to specify an allotment of movement and an allotment of attacking, from the basic combat standard of 2 actions.

It's all rather simple, really.

You create a unit from the general ruleset - which varies by game. In this case you are a TROOPER, and have /very/ few choices.

On player turns you take your actions, of which you have 2. You can move up to your alacrity stat (10), shoot or attack or punch or try to dig a hole with a shovel OR hit someone in the face with a shovel. The sky's the limit of your shovelling, or more practically, the length of your arms.

And then you take turns, the other side take turns, and at the end you're either down and we have to Reinstate you into a spare body, or you're alive and you've learned something while picking up a skill or two.

The technicians managed to leg it while they were busy making new ventilation channels in the command APC.

Left the scanning gear still running, and I guess they took that without much issue. APC is wrecked. Managed to make it out with the Instancing Mainline, so troopers Hellion and Dave can re-iterate fine.

ALLRIGHT, here's the deal - we got kicked out of the town last week by the damn Corpers, and they've been moving in heavy equipment ever since. Must of it comes through here, this little pass guarded by a thirsty patrol and those two bunkers.

Your job is to sweep the patrol, get the bunkers and get the Officer in charge. Then we can ambush the next supply convoy through, ride it into town and pull the old Trojan Spelunking Horse Trick on these damn Corper bastards, and then we dig through six hundred tons of mountain and hook ourselves up with a spaceship.

Heavy Byjiorn engages a Corper heavy in a shield pushing contest, but neither can damage the other locked as they are. Instead they kick up a lot of dust, sweat and grit their teeth.

Behind the lines the snipers take a chance to reload their guns - all except for one, who turns out to be surprisingly spry and whaps Green in the face.

With a heroic charge, Heavy Byjiorn blocks a sniper shot and draw the attention of the other heavy. Unfortuantely it leaves his back wide up, and the corper returns the earlier "axe to the back of the skull" favor with gusto.

Huh, didn't now they had one of those. That's a mini-turret, Byjiorn. Spits about 2000 rounds a minute for about a 3 minutes. That sniper didn't have time to activate it, since he was busy aiming. You're lucky it didn't start.

Maybe you could do something with your tools.

As for det-charges, it's simply an action to [Prime]. you have 2 action a turn, so you'd simple prime 2.

That's a hardened bunker shell, trooper. Det-charges aint gonna crack it unless you wire them up real good.
