An autistic goat with a shovel and a bucket wanders the land for adventure.
First thread: >>987786
-----

“-And what, now you’ve turned to stealing and banditry? You blind to hypocrisy or something?”

You’re standing on open grassy plains a short distance from a road that heads north.

Armed with the knowledge that your socks are far more holey than they should be, you’ve decided that getting shoes is actually kinda important. So after finishing up at the river you went east, and after a few hours of uneventful travel you find yourself here watching some people yell at each other.

“We told ye last time, Mertens. If yer not with us, ye’r against us!”

A large man stands in the middle of the road aiming a crossbow. He has a sword strapped to his belt and wears worn leather armor, and around him are five other men and women holding various weapons and looking angry.

Across from them, also on the road, is a big wagon pulled by two horses.

Or maybe it’s called a caravan? Because it has a big bent cloth roof thing? You don’t know.

Driving it is an older gray-haired man in cleaner-looking clothing, and standing with him are three people also holding weapons. He hops off the wagon’s front seat with a hand on the scabbard at his waist.

“Fah! How many of you have even swung a sword before? Come an’ try it!”

You’ve stopped ten metres or so away from the scene with Ashtia, the wolf looking almost bored at current events. Some of them have noticed you and are trying to get their respective leaders’ attention, but the two men are too busy shouting to be bothered.

You wonder what to do.

You put your bucket on the grass and touch Ashtia’s fur, because she’s fluffy. She doesn’t seem to mind.

It’s hard to think when there’s so much noise, though. The peace and calm of the river was so much nicer…

“Sto~p,” you say. “No shouting allowed.”

Oh, they already stopped. Because they finally noticed you, and are staring.

Mmmmmnnn, you didn’t think this far. What do you do now…

The older gray-haired man looks at the wolf, then at you petting her. “Hey, girly! Sick the wolf on these idiots and I’ll give you twelve silver!”

Silver? Silver... Cakes. Shovels. Cats. Nnnnn...

“- dragging an outsider into thi- !”

“- ‘s called having coin, nitwit- !”

Oh. Coins. You want shoes and things, but you don’t have any money. But he’s asking for Ashtia to do something. You haven’t really asked Ashtia to do things, she just kinda follows you.

>

I don't mind being a patsy but Ashtia isn't really Baphy's to command
>>

>>
>>998348
Just want to say I love your writing style. I don't think I've ever seen anyone do second person unreliable narration in a quest before but it really lends a disjointed feeling to the whole thing I would expect from someone autistic. The monologue bit from the first thread where Baphy struggles to put a name to what she was feeling as she buries the fallen druid was especially powerful; not ashamed to say I was a little misty eyed after that.
>>
>>998399

I will agree with this anon, said much better than I can put it.

I'm assuming this is the option for trying to make the doggo vomit in them. Probably a bit uncomfortable for it but sometimes you gotta take a hit for the team. Mama needs a new pair of shoes.
>>
>>998348
>[ ] Nnnnah. This doesn’t really concern you.
Ashtia is probably sentient and much smarter than we are. If she thought attacking was appropriate she would have done it already.
>>
>>998399

(Thanks man. Means a lot to hear, because this is pretty damn experimental for me so I'm always worried about if the tone and style is fitting, or if I'm being too vague on details for the sake of Autistic 4.)

You face the big man with the crossbow. “Go away please.”

“...No?” He looks at you. “Just- Stay outta this, wildblud.”

You tilt your head a bit, thinking. “‘Kay.” You sit on the ground, the grass tickling your thighs. Ashtia lays down next to you.

For a moment, nobody seems to know what to make of what happened. Then the two men seem to come to a silent agreement that the two of you aren’t there.

Of course, that’s all they agree on.

“Last time, Mertens. Leave yer wagon.”

“Shut up and shoot,” the older man responds. “Go on! Get on with it!”

With a thudding twang the crossbow bolt flies through the air. The gray-haired man steps to the side and the bolt hits him in the left shoulder. He flinches but otherwise loses none of his vigor, drawing his sword with his uninjured arm and crying out angrily.

Then everyone else is moving, weapons drawn and looking for blood. The wagon’s guardsmen and guardswoman wield swords and sport light leather armor, while the other side is a lot more patchwork. The bigger man has the only shooting weapon in the fight, but though his crossbow doesn’t look that big it still takes him time to load it again.

In that time the older man charges him, forcing the crossbow out of the fight and making the big guy draw a woodcutter’s axe.

You take the last red fruit out of your bucket and bite into it. Ashtia makes a sound when one of the angry people on the big man’s side strays close. You put the fruit down, pick up your shovel and hit him on the head very hard. Then you sit back down.

This one seems sweeter than the others. Does that mean it’s more or less ripe?
>>
>>998488

When you’re paying attention again, that is after finishing your fruit, you realise the side with more people lost. That seems weird, but you don’t question it.

You watch the big man and his friends run off the opposite side of the road into the distance. Apparently nobody was actually trying to kill each other, but you think there’s some severe injuries on either side. Lots of blood, too.

One of the guardsmen seems to have a broken leg. He’s sitting on the ground, being bandaged by his friend. The gray-haired man looks at you, breathing heavily.

“You-” he starts, but then pauses. He seems to think about something, then straightens up, sighs, and gives you a wry grin.

“Enjoy the show, girly?”

“Do you have shoes?”

He blinks, then looks at his feet. “Uh, yes?”

“Can I have them?”

He looks at you, then at your feet, then lets out a short, barking laugh. “No, girly. And I don’t have any other pairs, before you ask. Try the leatherworker at Wervik, or the other traders.”

You don’t know what a Wervik is. You pick yourself up, brushing the blades of grass off your legs, then point and ask. “What’s in the wagon?”

“Mostly cotton, from Antwerp. Great big farm, but the place hasn’t even got a loom.”

Cotton sounds fluffy, but you already have a wolf.

You can’t think of another direction so you end up following the old merchant and his wagon to Wervik, which is apparently a town about a day’s travel along the road north. Being tired and wounded from their recent fight they only go for another few hours before setting up camp in the late afternoon, deciding to spend the rest of the day on first aid and rest.

>The guardswoman is setting up a campfire and doing stuff. Go pester her.
>>
The old merchant, who told you his name was Udo Mertens, is helping with taking and setting up tents from his wagon while the injured man rests on a nearby log. The guardswoman has found flat dirt ground and has placed a ring of stones on it, and is now gathering tinder for a fire.

She looks young, though you’re not very good with ages. She’s also not completely human like the others - her features are lithe, her skin tinged a pale violet. Smooth but short black hair frames her face, and her eyes are bright green.

You decide to pester her for no particular reason.

“Hi.”

The woman smiles a little nervously. You’re not sure if that’s because Ashtia is sniffing her.

“Hello. Umm, was it Baphy?”

You nod.

“I’m Claritia,” she says. “Ah, did you want something?”

“I’m bored.”

Claritia pauses, seemingly unsure. People do that a lot around you for some reason.

“... I’m about to go look for phirin fruit. You could help if you want.”

“Phirin?”

“Oh, for the bandages. They help with wounds and pain.”

Rolls are pretty much always 1d100 best of 3, with criticals overriding. I try to take into account degrees of success.

Traits are applied as bonuses - each rank of a trait is +5. Traits can only stack with those from a different category (character+skill, but not skill+skill).

Clari leads you and Ashtia west to the forest, which is about an hour away. You’re carrying your shovel and bucket, as always, and for the most part stay quiet. Some questions do come to mind, though.

“Why are you purple?”

Her reaction is more surprised than expected, and kinda funny. You have to wait a moment for her to gather herself.

She tells you she’s half-fae, on her mother’s side. Which of course makes you ask what that means.

“Not all that much, actually. I think my fairy blood is kinda weak,” Clari answers, scratching her cheek. “And fae are really rare, so I don’t know anyone else like me. Though, mum was really good at illusions; making people see, hear, smell things. I can kinda do what she does, but not nearly as well.”

“Can you show me?”

She tells you she’s tired, then changes the subject.

You’ve reached the forest. Ashtia pokes you in the side with her snout, then pads off to menace more poor animals.

Clari tells you that the phirin fruits you’re looking for grow on vines that climb up tree trunks, and are small, bumpy and yellow. The two of you stay at the outer edges where the trees are sparse, but don’t find anything.

So you walk a bit deeper in. The half-fae woman doesn’t want to stay when night falls and it’s growing close to evening, but neither of you want to go back empty-handed.

Then you find what you’re looking for - bright yellow teardrop-shaped little fruits lining a thick vine that spirals up a tall tree.

Clari frowns, looking up. “Guess we can only get a few. It doesn’t look easy to climb, and I’m still sore from earlier.” She turns to you. “Do you think you can try to pull some down?” She asks, gesturing to your shovel.

You aren’t really paying attention to her words, though. Instead you’re thinking about the sound in your ears.

You put your bucket and shovel down then stand up. You close your eyes, listening.

A tune, windy and woody, hollow and full.

Something in perfect accord with the rustling of leaves, the breeze between the trees, the tiniest steps, flaps, and squeaks of the things that live. A quiet harmony, which your breath and heartbeat joins.

You start humming with it. Slowly, letting your voice entwine with the tune.

The serene melody grows with you, and the forest sways with your song.

When you open your eyes there’s a bunch of vines resting on the ground in front of you with the phirin fruits still attached. Around a dozen of them, you think. Claritia lets out a squeak, staring, though not entirely because of what you did.

There’s a small girl, half of even your short height, standing to your left and staring at you.

“You have a nice voice,” she says, her voice soft and clear like a bell.

You look at the diminuitive girl. At her soft brown hair, her innocent, sleepy yellow eyes, her gossamer dress and wings.

“Thanks,” you remember to say.

“Are you going to sing again?”

You tilt your head, a bit puzzled. You can still hear the humming around you.

It was fun, so you do it again.

You sing, wordlessly. You let your thoughts, your heart dictate.

You sing about leaving a lonely darkness. You sing about being unsure, about not knowing your way.

You sing about loss. About the strength it takes to move on.

You sing about a wide, open world. About a land that lives. About vibrant grasslands, sparkling rivers, dancing trees.

You sing about the wind at your back, and about tomorrow.

When your song finishes you feel exhausted, but alive.

The fairy sung with you. She seems to have enjoyed herself, smiling brightly.

“Okay. I’m coming with you!”

You walk through dusk back to the camp with a vine of phirin fruits wrapped around you like a scarf, a little fairy girl riding a big brown wolf at your side, and one very, very confused purple lady.

Sup. The adventure continues in 14 hours, in this thread - tune in then!

Really am glad to hear people are enjoying the quest. I do have a twitter: @boxofmithril. Thing is I use it for another quest, so you'll end up seeing tweets for that as well.

A tidbit - for phirin fruits, 'enjoys being sung to' was actually a part of what RNG gave me. That's... probably one of the main inspirations for why things turned out the way they did. Also, when I was searching for forest images a dryad popped up, then when I searched for dryad images a fairy popped up. So that's why that happened.

I really did not expect so much NATURE. Makes me think about how different things would have turned out if Baphy looked for a village first instead of wandering into the forest.

I also want to note that I'm being wary of adding more companions. The fairy was very out of nowhere, and I won't hand you a loli for every natural crit. I don't intend to turn this into Baphy's Roaming Circus Quest.
Though, when I type it out like that it sounds like it'd be kinda fun.

Night’s falling when your little group reaches the camp, finding the uninjured guardsman sitting on a small boulder waiting. He’s examining his steel sword while holding a gray cloth rag, and puts both away when he notices the four of you approach.

“Bit longer than expected. Something happen-”

His attention is quickly drawn to the little fairy girl riding Ashtia.

“Long lost relative, Claritia?”

“No, Mac. No,” the half-fae woman replies, sighing.

“Hm. Guess she ain’t purple, anyway. Why’s she riding the wolf?”

The fairy puffs up. “My name is Lulette, and this is my noble steed!”

Noble steed makes a dismissive chuffing noise.

“... Yes.” The young man pauses, glancing over his shoulder at the merchant and the other guardsman by the campfire. “Well, I won’t complain, at least. So long as she doesn’t decide to swap out parts of my face or something.”

Lulette smiles innocently, then fades into invisibility. The guardsman surreptitiously places a palm over his nose, just in case.

You don’t have a tent and don’t really care for one, so you fall asleep on the ground curled up next to Ashtia.

All of you wake up early next morning, and are greeted by the colours of the world looking different from the day before. The ground is yellow, the sky is a soft gradient pink to green; the condition persists until Ashtia appears holding a giggling Lulette in her mouth.

According to Clari, Lulette is very well-behaved for a fairy. “We woke up at the same place we slept with everything intact, after all.” You wonder what the young woman’s childhood was like.

They give you some bread to eat before setting off. It’s chewy.

The trip is a little dull, but the morning breeze is nice and cool so you don’t mind. Udo pulls his horse to a stop a few hours in.

Claritia cuts off two phirin fruits from your vine. She took two last night as well, and leaves the rest for you to keep. She hands the two fruits to the uninjured guardsman.

His name is Macarius, and apparently his father works as an alchemist in a nearby city or something. You don’t really pay attention.

You do pay attention when he cuts open one of the small yellow fruits with a dagger and picks out the small seeds. He then slices the fruit up and places them in a mortar and pestle, grinding them into paste. It looks kinda tasty, but he says they’re just bitter and numbing.

With the dagger he spreads a thin layer of the yellow mush onto a cloth bandage, which he uses to wrap up his injured friend’s leg. Then he does the same thing for the gray-haired merchant’s shoulder, swapping out the older man’s blood-soaked bandage.
>>
>>1005478

You take your bottle of clear liquid from your bucket and show it to Macarius.

“See how it’s a little blueish-green when you do this?” He says, holding the bottle up to the sunlight and pointing. “It’s Melfam’s solvent. Mixes with most plants and can concentrate their effects for pastes and potions. Even a little bit is useful.”

He says your small bottle of the stuff would cost around ten silver, not counting the cost of the small glass bottle. You don’t really know how much ten silver is, though he tells you it’s a lot if you’re not a merchant or a skilled tradesman.

You also show Udo your shiny rock.

“It’s a rock,” he tells you.

“A shiny rock.”

He concedes on the shiny point, leaving you triumphant.

It’s afternoon when you start to see smoke from chimneys and triangular thatched roofs of stone and timber homes. Wervik is without walls and feels almost more like a village than a town, except for all the people crowding its streets.

It’s busy, and its song is the shouts of tradesmen touting their wares, the hundreds of feet against hard dirt, and the chattering between travelers and friends.

Udo leaves you at the southern gate, where a town guard stares at the big brown wolf nervously.

“You said you were looking for footwear, right? Wervik’s leather-worker is Yunin. Doubt she’ll have traveling gear your size, but give her a day and she’ll figure something out.

I doubt those phirin will keep for another week, so I’d either get them mashed up and stored or just sell ‘em. Try the apothecary or pester the traders at the market.

If you really need the coin, you could try the adventurer’s guild as well.”

You ask the older man what an adventurer is, and he replies with “a mercenary with a wanderlust problem or enough naivety to play hero.”

Claritia tells you they’re staying at an inn on the south-eastern side of town, near the stables. That inn is the more expensive one of two in town and used mostly by merchants, and she says you might want to look at the other one if you want a place to stay.

“We’ll be in town for a few days, then we’ll go to Silvercrest,” she tells you with a smile. She says you’re welcome to join them if you want to, though you don’t know what a Silvercrest is.

Lulette wishes her a nice trip, after which the half-fae stumbles and falls forward onto the ground.

They’re such good friends.

You start wandering through the town. Having spent the past two days in the wilderness makes being surrounded by so many people a little bit weird, though everyone gives you and your big brown wolf a wide berth. Oddly, Ashtia doesn’t seem to feel uncomfortable about being here.

Lulette isn’t visible, but if you strain your ears you can hear the light flitting of her wings.

You do your best to remember Udo’s directions. Straight through the town, past the chorus of excited voices from the market place, turn right, look up for a sign with the picture of a herb.

Ashtia sets herself down outside and you leave your bucket with her, then you open the door to a quaint little store and an innumerable array of smells; fresh, minty, peppery scents, sweet heady aromas, among many others. Shelves against the walls are lined with clay pots where little plants of all shapes and sizes grow.

You think you should’ve left your shovel outside, too.

Behind a wooden counter sits a balding and frail-looking man wearing small round spectacles. He looks up when you enter, smiling gently.

“Come in, come in. Welcome,” he says, his voice soft and croaky. “We haven’t met, have we? I am Adalphen Tatur. How may this humble apothecary help you, young lady?”

You tilt your head, thinking. “My name is Baphy. Will you give me things for these?” You say, holding up the vine of phirin fruits with your free hand.

He coughs off to the side twice, lightly. The old apothecary gets up from his seat and takes a closer look at the vine while adjusting his glasses.

“Phirin fruit? Good size, recently ripe. A good find, Miss Baphy,” he says, then looks to the side of the stall. “I do apologise, but please ask your friend to not touch that.”

Lulette appears out of the air floating near a very small but very carnivorous-looking plant slowly inching towards her outstretched hand. She flies onto your shoulders and hugs your forehead, pouting.

“Imp’s Bushjack is not very safe to play with, little lady. I wouldn’t want someone to get hurt in my store.”

Adalphen Tatur tells you he can buy your phirin fruits for one silver and six copper each. He tells you each silver coin is twelve copper when you ask, and he guesses that a pair of good travelling boots would be around twenty-four silver.

You walk outside and come back with the little bottle of clear liquid, and the old man laughs.

“You might get more than the cost for the solvent for what the glass is worth, Miss Baphy. I won’t buy the vial, but I can pay eight silver for the solvent.”

If we sell 6 fruits and the solvent we'll have 17 silver, and if we sell the glass to a more appropriate shop for somewhere around 8 silver, we'll have enough for a decent pair of boots with 3 fruits leftover, perhaps less if we can't get as much as he suggests for the glass vial.

(I don't think Baphy considers haggling, or understands the point of it.

I think she'd only haggle if a price doesn't make sense to her, but then it's not so much haggling as it is correcting reality.)

So keeping a few fruits is a thing. Then there's whether or not to sell the solvent.

You think the phirin fruits can be useful, though you might need some bandages or spare cloth to use them. They also smell nice and minty.

The solvent thing you’re not really sure. It sounds like it can do lots of things though, so maybe you should just keep it. So you do.

You walk outside and come back to show Adalphen Tatur your shiny rock. He tells you it’s a shiny rock.

The old apothecary takes a small curved knife from a drawer and starts taking the phirin fruits, leaving two of them for you. You ask him whether someone would give you things for the vine.

“It can be used as rope, but phirin vine isn’t very strong,” he says. “You also don’t have very much, so I wouldn’t expect anybody to buy it.”

He hands you ten silver and six copper coins for seven of your phirin fruits. You actually don’t have anywhere to keep them, so he gives you them in a little cloth bag.

You glance up at the fairy sitting on your shoulders, wondering what she thinks. She looks at you, nuzzling her face into your hair, then grins wide. “Lulette wants to buy something too.”

She hops off and hovers in the air, pointing to the plant from earlier - you think he called it a Bushjack?

Bushjack. Fun word.

“I want that!”
>>
>>1006031

Adalphen chuckles. “Imp’s Bushjack is not very common, little miss, and difficult to uproot without hurting it. It needs pure water as well, or it would get sick,” he explains.

“I can take care of a plant!” The fairy says while flitting around the little space there is in the shop.

The old man starts to speak, then stops to consider something. “Little miss, would you happen to have any dust?”

Lulette pauses in mid-air, then seemingly from nowhere takes out a little bag. It looks like a leaf that was tied up with its own stem, and smells sugary.

The apothecary thinks for a bit longer. “I may be able to arrange something.”

You leave the store with your phirin vine-scarf lighter. You place your bag of coins in your bucket along with a small ceramic watering can, which contains a bright blue stone embedded on the inside.

Lulette hovers in the air at your side, hugging a little clay pot with what is basically a flat, teethy green mouth on a stem growing out of it and looking very pleased with herself. You think it’s trying to eat her.

It does shrink down when Ashtia sniffs it, though.

>

You’ve traded 7 phirin fruits for 10s 6c, contained in a little cloth bag tied with string.
You have a Purifying Watering Can.
Lulette has gained an Imp’s Bushjack in a clay pot. It eats insects and may enjoy biting people.

The holes in your socks won’t go away themselves, so you decide it’s time for shoes.

Actually, they will go away. After a few days. You still need shoes.

The apothecary said good boots would be around twenty-four silver, but you could settle for something simpler.

You’ve just had your socks this entire time, after all. Do goats need traveling boots?

Lulette and her new plant disappear again while you try to remember where Udo said the leather-worker was.

You pass through the marketplace, and notice there’s a man standing on a wooden raised platform thing and shouting. There’s two others next to him that look like guards, though with metal armor instead of the leather stuff the other town guards were wearing.

“Residents of the town of Wervik! The bounty on the criminal the Witch Of Crows has been increased,” he shouts over the noise of the market, waving a piece of paper in the air. “Soldiers and mercenaries are strongly encouraged to visit the adventurer’s guild for details!“

Mmm. Is that the kind of stuff you’d do at the adventurer’s guild?

The people in the marketplace don’t seem to like him for some reason. Some of them look kinda angry.

The yelling man says something about how the people of Silvercrest are obligated to something something, losing your attention completely.

>>1006297

Meandering about eventually takes you to an outfitter’s store, where a man greets you at the entrance and directs you to a round and lively woman who calls herself Yunin.

You express your need for footwear, which she agrees with quickly with a glance to your feet, and also remember to say you only have 10 silver.

“Not a whole lot to work with, huh. Let’s see...” Yunin walks out of sight behind a doorway, and you hear things being shuffled around. She brings out two pairs of low boots, one that’s made of cloth and the other leather. The second one looks very worn.

“These ones are very simple, and I’ll give ‘em to you for three silver,” she says, tapping the cloth ones. You don’t think those ones will last very long if you go walking in a forest again.

“These,” she says for the leather ones, “are a little old, but still tough. I’ll let you take ‘em for eight silver.”

You’re doing a lot of thinking today. This is new, and kinda tiring.

As always, tell me what you think, and what you want to see more of!

I'll take a short break and run again after a few days. You can keep track of me at https://twitter.com/boxofmithril, I usually announce a thread somewhere between 12-24 hours before starting.

I'm archiving this stuff at http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=GFQ, for anyone who misses the older threads.

And do remember to vote on that last choice, or I won't know where to start next time!

Also post goats. Wolves and fairies and little flytraps are fine too.
Also suggest a name that Lulette will give her Bushjack.

Oh, I should also note. The apothecary wasn't really trying to jip Baphy - when Macarius said the solvent costs about ten silver for that much, he was referring to buying price. If you sell to a merchant it'll almost always be below market price. Sorry if I was being unclear about that.

But we don't just have a wolf.

After we sell our fruit and get shoes, we should ask the apothecary for lessons in exchange for fetching more stuff for him.
