Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=stranded+mech+quest

You are Captain Alex, Proxima Aquarii Federation, 4th Fringe Machine Infantry. When heading to a routine exercise, you and your mech ended up somewhere other than outside the backwater base on a polluted world you called home.

Now you're stuck in a world that's verdant, green, and full of life, where people use 'magic' and gods rule. You were pretty sure it was a sophisticated LARPer's personal planet, but Mirna, from the Apha Centauri Conglomerate has stated otherwise.

You are an ace pilot, the elite of mech operators, and you pilot the Newt, a durable and quick military mech. You can't seem to use up your ammo. You have two crewmates, Hilda, a convicted witch, and Seirye, an elven slave under a mind spell that serves as a mechanic.

You have accepted a quest to steal back an artifact from Mera's temple. You are currently bargaining with a witch in a hidden city in the sewers of the Imperial Capital.
>>
>>2191236
You show the crone the medikit. Her eyes widen as she stares at it.

"What is this, child? What is this trinket?" She sniffs the air and takes a step back, "Clean. metal. Yes, this is from somewhere far away... not of this plane... A rare thing this is. A cure for pain? No, more... far far more." She narrows her eyes, "A valuable thing to you to be sure. What secrets do you seek to ply from me?"

"What have you got?"

"Hexes, spells, and charms. Your little country witch can use them, but I will only give her the secrets of one school. We witches only know a few spells of each, so she'd learn four new spells."

Hilda clears her throat, causing you to lean back, "Witch magic is heretical because it bypasses blessings from gods. A hex is effectively a curse. A spell, is, well, magic for battle. A charm is a type of enchantment for bolstering things... or controlling things."

You consider the options you could get for the medikit.

"Charms" You respond, handing her the medikit.

"The contract is sealed then. Young witch, I bequeath my knowledge to you." The hag cackles and points to Hilda. Her hand glows as Hilda does the same. The magic fades and the crone cackles, "That's all I can give you without an apprenticeship and training. Be grateful, no other trinkets can buy more spells from me."

Hilda staggers back, you go to her to find out what it was she learned.

"There are... four charm spells, all for living in hiding and dealing with those who find out... I've learned... Unwrite... A charm that causes people to lose their memories that I choose. Perfect Disguise, a charm I can place on someone to completely transform them into someone else... Puppeteer, a charm that takes control over someone's body and turns it over to a witch, and... Hexen Aspect, a charm for a weapon that imbues it with heretical magic..." Hilda shivers.

It sounds like some morally questionable charms to you, but you'll take what you can get. You glance back to the crone, only to find both her and her stall have vanished, leaving you in the undercity market. Next to her is a rough-looking creature selling primitive firearms. A variety of ne'er-do-wells and ruffians abound, with a place for hiring services... A slave trader is down a ways too. It looks like there's a ladder up to the imperial city too.

You thank the empty space where the witch's stall once was. Hopefully she can hear you. You head towards the hiring place, ignoring the slave trader.
You head to the hiring place, an old man stares at you from behind a barred window.

"You don't look like you belong here... We've men for hire for all sorts of tasks. Whaddaya want?"

"All sorts?" You ask.

"Yea, if ya don't want to pay adventurers, these folk'll do dirty work for coin... for a while, that is." The man glares at you, one eye milky with blindness, "We got thieves. assassins, cutthroats, burglars, thugs..." 'Temporary hiring based on task,' reads a sign to the side. None of these folk look trustworthy at all. They charge 5 gold per person too.

>What do you do?

>assassination

none the less, i'd say we should get a couple of thugs to cause a scene of some sort outside of meras temple to distract people so we can just waltz on it and nab mirnas thing

How much gold do we have again?

Honestly causing havoc is probably more beneficial. Have a bunch of them pretend to have a plague, or give a couple of them a plague on the low-down. Something disfiguring but non-lethal, to occupy the hero's time. Send him on a fake fetch quest to get a "cure" when really it just stops on its own after a week.

I have no idea why I think we can do this.

Too bad we can't make a memetic corruption spell that makes people just believe they're sick, and that passes from person to person.

15 gold remaining

You think a moment before placing 10 gold onto the counter. The old man behind the bars bites one of the coins to test its softness. He nods.

"Alright, ye've paid fer the lives of two of our roster. I'm givin ya the Blackmaul brigands." He whistles into the room and points to two of the men, "Oi, layabouts, this bloke just bought yer miserable hides."

Two hulking fellows stride up. One is an elf who's had his face carved into. With short black hair, he reminds you of those hardcore military types with the flat top. God, those tryhards. The other man is this muscular fellow with a mishmash of armor plates and a crude mace on his back. He's human, but he also looks pretty damn mean. You note the old man tossing the men four of the gold coins each. He turns to you.

"These are Gravis the carver and Hoss the maul, the blackmaul brigands. You've purchased their loyalty what you have em do I know nothing about."

They look to you, "So, you're the guy who's paid for us, hrm? We'll be livin large with these coins. What do you need two men like us for? Intimidation? Got a rat that needs crushing?" They shift about, "cute girls you got there. Someone hurt em and now you need an enforcer?"

"No... I need you both to make some noise in front of Mera's temple." You state. They both look at each other and laugh.

"Oh, that's it? You got it boss. What do we do after that?"

"We'll see after that." You reply to the thugs.

>You have purchased the Blackmaul Brigands, a duo of mercenaries turned outlaws. Low-profile, these two ruffian's lives are yours to use and dispose of at your will.

Hilda taps your shoulder, "Uh, I don't mean to interrupt, but... You do know that gold coins are worth a lot, right? Adventuring gear and material is extremely expensive because the adventurers often never return... Spellbooks even more so. A gold coin can buy you a house in this city."

She explains that the usual tender is copper bits, or portions of a chopped coin. 10 makes a copper coin. 100 copper coins makes a silver bit, and 10 silver bits makes a silver coin. 100 of those makes a gold bit, and 10 of those makes a gold coin. Books, which are hard to produce and transcribe are worth quite a bit, but SPELLBOOKS are worth a small fortune. This is why witches teach students, rather than self-study. Regardless, the elite in Mera's city have a great deal of gold coins, so prices here are even higher than normal.

You have the means to infiltrate the temple. Or you could look at other underworld stalls, such as the burly greenish man hocking weapons or the slaves.

Hilda's perfect disguise will hide you from Mera if you encounter her, according to the witch.

You approach the stall, which appears to be "Gog McThurg's Guns (and axes!)" Behind the vendor are gunpowder weapons and a few axes.

The vendor, though... Is a hulking greenish creature, humanoid, but with a jutting lower jaw. it chews a stalk of wheat slowly as he follows you with his gaze, eyes hidden under the brim of a straw hat. A large pair of overalls sits on top of the biggest polo shirt you've ever seen. The creature huffs at you.

"Awright now, this 'ere's Gog's guns, and I's got da best guns, ya hear? Dose boys up top think they so fancy wit' da armor and swords, but My guns? Boom. Armor is crushed." He slams a massive fist on the counter for emphasis.

"...Do you have shortswords?" You start.

"No! I don't carry no pansy-ass swords. I carry guns and AXES. You wanna be a man, you use axe. Wanna be badass? Shotgun. Only da best at McThurg's."

"Armor, perhaps?"

"Whatchoo need armor for? You have gun and sword can't get close."

"My magician here..."

"Oooooh fer da human girlie. I see." Gog nods, "Not a warror. Fragile like a priest. Yes, I see." He reaches under table and tosses you a shirt of mail, "Take this for da human lady. Too small for Gog, for real men. Keep, but only take if you buy. What do you buy?"

Gog's stock is as follows:
Axe - 10 silver coins.
Gun - 20 silver coins
Big gun - 50 silver coins
Biggest gun - 1 gold

You order the biggest gun, a gun, and an axe.

You have 13 gold and 70 silver pieces

You are wondering about larger guns when the tusked fellow drop a gunpowder cannon on the counter, rigged to a rifle stock. There is no way Hilda could carry this.

"Biggest gun." The creature grunts, before setting a sawed off twin-barrel shotgun beside it, "Gun. Aaand... Axe." An axe, simple, but wickedly sharp, is placed beside the sawed-off weapon. "Don't ask fer ammo. Guns enchanted. Just hit hammer back.

"Do you have any more armor? Or bigger guns?"

"Bigger guns? You want even bigger guns, go ask dwarves, or go to da mountains. These guns for people. Mail shirt was all I had. You want armor, go to mountains. Good leather up there. Dragonhide maybe." He crosses his arms, "I sell guns, not armor. You want bigger, like cannons or somethin? Ain't got those."

It seems that unless you want to purchase more guns, Gog McThurg won't be of much help. You hand Hilda the sawed off shotgun and let one of your thugs deal with the cannon on a gun stock you just bought. The axe is slipped onto your belt. There is a slave trader not far away, as well as a path upwards.

You probably have all you need to enter Mera's temple for your heist, but contingency plans help.

You have the gear and the crew, you head to the temple location. The original plan was for the thugs to cause a distraction with each other while you enter the temple.

As the temple is a shrine location, encountering Mera is VERY high. Hilda's disguise charm could mask your appearance, perhaps. Her spells could also be utilized to bypass access. Seirye appears to have no role.

Or you could go loud, but... Somehow you doubt being in a trance in Mera's temple is a good thing while your group raises hell in the imperial capital.

You request Hilda try her magic on you to hide your appearance. She admits she might get it wrong but she tries her best. She casts the enchantment on you and...

"Oh dear... That's not what I wanted at all..." The witch gulps, "W-well, I can remove the charm after the heist, but..."

The first thing you realize is everyone is taller. A lot taller. Also your hair is longer. You appear to be enchanted into the form of a youth.

"Why am I a girl?" You ask.

"I don't know!" Hilda stammers.

Well, at least Mera won't recognize you, and nobody will suspect a kid... Though you're really glad it's temporary...

No matter, a disguise is a disguise. Time to rob a temple.

The thugs are wondering if you want them to hassle people or each other.

There are three entrances. The front is the most noticeable and obvious. The left side bears a door in the middle of the temple. The right side has a doorway near the rear of the temple. When observed, you note that both are rarely used, but the far back one has more activity.

The thugs are deployed. The begin arguing with each other and gesturing in front of the temple, making a scene. A few of the temple priests and priestesses move in, and a couple town guards. You see a few more rush out of the temple to the now-forming crowd as you sneak to the right.

You enter the room and find that it is, indeed, a bathroom. Although only in the bathing sense. Nobody is here presently, and there is a nice pool of steaming water set into the floor. Luckily your outfit doesn't leave footprints, nor does Hilda and Seirye's.

Facing the wall like before, the door to the left seems heavier and more important. The door behind you is made of laquered wood. You can hear footsteps behind it and muffled voices.

You head through. The room is empty, save for glass cases containing a variety of unidentified artifacts. Mirna's ward occupies the far wall from you, surrounded by a purple barrier.

Hilda frowns, "That's a memory barrier. If you touch it, your memories will be erased... A pure mind, you see. We'll either need the head priestess's staff, or someone with Mera's blessing to bypass it.

The door on the left side of the room has much louder voices behind it.
The doors to the baths are behind you.

"It could be a trick! We need to cast wards on the doors."
"Not without the head priestess's approval."
"But she is out there!"

"Alright, listen. Zavar's magic is spuer bad, okay? And you have Acarit's blessing too? Oh my, child. And another I can't recognize. Alright, allow me to set you back on the straight path.."

"Light magic!" You respond, deciding to play the part of the innocent child to continue the charade, "I have friends I wanna help."

Mera laughs, "Of course. What an enviable motivation." A ball of light descends upon you as warmth fills you.
>You now know the 'cure ailment' spell. A staple spell in adventuring.

"So, uh, how are you?" You ask, trying to get some intel on the enemy at hand.

"Oh, young one, you wouldn't understand. It's very hard. You see, a long time ago, those very bad people did something terrible to me and my friends. They tricked me and took away something very important from me. And now it seems those very bad people have a champion... Some sort of faceless monster from a hellish world of war and death. And they roped you into this as well. Heed my advice, child, stay in the cities. Outside is dangerous and full of very bad people."

You think a bit, deciding on how to word the next question, "But, you fight them, right? Why do you look after people?"

"Yes, I do, and I won for quite a bit, but now I'm fighting alone. Child, I look after people because I was once... Ah... I'm sorry, it pains me too much to reminisce. I'll send you back. I'll be sure to tell my priestesses to treat you well, alright? Come visit another shrine soon."

With that, Mera and the white space fade away, leaving you in the shrine once more.

>what do you do?
>>
>>2204917
Well I didn't expect to actually get a blessing from Mera, this will be awkward when she sees us again.

Wait does that mean that she can burn us from the inside like that guy we defeated at the beginning? How do we defend ourselves from that?

Regardless, you decide to get back to the mission. As you turn towards Hilda, the light feeling of your disguise fades... but you still seem to be in the same form.

"Hilda? What happens when the feeling of the charm vanishes?"

"Oh, that means the enchantment is lifted. Why?"

...shit.

"Wait, is it gone?!"

...shitshitshitshitshitshit.

"Alex, is it gone?"

"FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-" Hilda covers your mouth frantically halfway through your cry of suffering. Thanks to her ineptitude, you are stuck like this.
perks:
>Innocent appearance. +40 to encounters with gods. +20 to persuasion.

She lets you go as you stop, breathing heavily, "Mera blessed me. She's not omnipotent. Let's get the ward, and get out. Now."

Back the way you came is the ward. There are other entrances to the shrine though, including another in the back, and one to the other side of that heavy door... oh, and where those men went...

How do the military weapons designers justify this sort of extravagant usage of space and tonnage?

I've already had to modify my mental equivalent for this universe's mechs from proper MBTs to IFVs after the storage area was introduced, and now I find out that there's a goddamn toilet in it too?
>>
>>2205241
it's part of the cockpit module. It's basically just a small septic tank that can be dumped at will. It's more compact than an airplane toilet...

The newt is a long-term field mech. A team of newts can operate as a camp. The cargo space is mostly for ammunition.
>>
>>2205117
>>2205151
You quickly retreat to the trophy room. You wait a bit, listening for Mera's goons before cautiously approaching the ward. you approach the barrier.

This is it. If you've messed this up, it's the end for you. Holding your breath, you reach forward and... grip the ward.

Nothing happened. You remove the ward. You briefly glance around before looking back to Hilda, "OKAY THEN!" With that, you book it.

You scurry out of the bathroom and out the side. The thugs are being broken up by armored guards. You could probably send Seirye to get them, or leave them to it.

You also need to get out of this city somehow with this ward.

>what do you do?
>>
>>2205307
>Send seiyre to get them while you hurry back tell seiyre to tell them their duty is done they can get drunk or for their pay waste it all for you care.
>>
>>2205307
The ward looks like a staff? Disguise it as some kind of weapon and sneak out the same way we did in - pretending to be adventurers.

And sure, send Seirye to get Gravis and Hoss. Tell them the last part of their job is to go through the motions as though they're fencing something off on the black market. If we ever are in town again, we might look them up for more work, so don't disappoint us on this!

>>2205289
Despite that, it's only crewed by a single crew member per mech without any spares? Seems odd to me, but I suppose there isn't any point pursuing the matter.
>>

You snuck in as adventurers, so you'll sneak out as adventurers. With a bit of... borrowing... you wrap the ward in burlap and have Hilda carry it. Seirye is told to notify the thugs, and she rushes off to do so. There is a bit of chatter, but you sneak around the crowd while it disperses. Seirye soon returns, toting that cannon you bought earlier.

You pass through market square. The sooner you get to Mirna, the sooner she can tell you how to return to normal... Oh, and maybe get your blessing from her too. That'd help out.

However, as you near the gate, a realization comes... You walked in as three adults. Now you are clearly a child.

THE MECH'S OFFLINE. This motherfucking cocky asshat! If you decided to pull this shit on YOUR guard duty you would have been court-martialed, re-ranked, and shipped off to the plague-jungles of Kim's Folly to pilot a fucking Piped tank.

Holy shit. Hilda glances back at you and pales at the sight of your expression, "I-I'm really sorry, I was sure it would be temporary! Maybe... maybe you could ask Mirna? Please don't be mad at me, Alex, it was an accident!"

she keeps this line of speech until you reach the mech. Mercifully your DNA markers still match, though you have to adjust the hell out of your seat and controls, as well as the rearview mirror... how annoying. The mech starts up fine though.
