ASOIAF Reincarnation: A Male Powder Fantasy – Thread 7

Character Sheet: https://pastebin.com/RsQUNkkx
Future Updates and Shitposts: https://discord.gg/DP7kpEf
Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?searchall=powder+fantasy

Fifth Month of 281 AC, Lands of House Whent, Castle of Harrenhal, The Riverlands
Powder Storage – 60 cartridges
Personal Funds – 0 silver stags
Armament – Mastercrafted Flintlock Rifle, Squire’s Sword
Protection – Munitions Grade Armor, Kite Shield

On the last thread you received a visit from King Aerys himself who apparently was some sort of Christmas molester hellbent on killing Santa Claus. Unfortunately just before he was about to seal the deal, Dothraki Extremists hijacked a plane and ran it to the Harrenhal’s towers.
Of course, all of that turned out to just be a dream in the end.

After waking up, Ser Hector decided that it’d be a great idea to sign you up at the Squire’s melee and you weren’t one to go against his judgement in this matter. However, prior to accepting your participation, your Father demanded you to spar with you brother in order to see whether or not you were qualified.

You received some funds to get some equipment for yourself and decided to use one of the many unused facilities at Harrenhal to create a suit of Munitions Grade Armor quickly and cheaply with your limited funds as well as buy yourself a larger shield.

After getting your ass knocked on to the sand by your brother it was revealed that your Father might have been more concerned about your brother’s refusal to accept the Anointment due to not feeling himself worthy, rather than of your skills at arms. With your loss however, he decided to go through with it in the end.

You decided to spend the few free days you had putting on some bets for the coming jousts in the hopes of multiplying your funds and preparing for the Squire’s melee, which is where you’re at now.

After a bit of fighting, you noticed that your skill at fighting was a few notches above the Squires in this Tourney.
Though you might be weaker and smaller due to your size, you still made short work out of the lowborn squires who were wearing the bargain bin equipment and right now, you’re about to repeat the feat on one of the firstborn squires.
>>
After seeing the skillful blow of the Highborn squire against your pitiable flanks, you decided that he was the closest thing to a proper fight in this match.
The Poor Squire he’s fighting seems to be in a pretty sad state too.
It’s time to call dibs on that one before someone else notices this.

You grab a mudball and toss it at the back of the noble one.
”HARKEN! YOU SEIZED OUR FLANK! I CHALLENGE YOU!”
Whilst he takes a quick look at you, the peasant squire starts distancing himself from the noble one. Either he likes his nose or he can’t afford to give up his armor.

As he turns his eyes back to see the weakling draw away from him, he grips his steel and faces you again.
”I ACCEPT YOUR POMPOUS CHALLENGE!”

He charges towards you and strikes against you with reckless blows, each of them with enough to cause you severe harm should he be able to land a decent hit. His size and physique were more impressive than yours with each blow carrying with the much more weight than yours.
Despite the barrage of swings, your defense barely manages to hold until finally you see an opening amidst his fierce advance strikes.

”EAAAARRGHHH!!!”
Thus, blood stained the soil.

Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the the beast, for it is a human number. It’s number is 6, 6, 6,5. You rolled 4 degrees of success with the 23, which means a crit with 3 sixes. This means that not only did you 1 shot him with the blow, you also left a bloody wound too which requires immediate medical attention.

The Blow was nothing short of magnificent. If someone told you to do it again, you’d be unsure to be able to pull it off even with a hundred tries.
You swung your blunted weapon at the weapon hand of your opponent at a perfect angle and distance with just the correct momentum, causing the full power of the swing be centered into the tip of the blade.

The Red Streak went from the root of his pinky, extending a bit to the underside of the arm, the tough leather gloves and padding torn by the strength of your blow. It was not a mortal wound, but it was still bleeding nastily.
He was unable to fight now and for the next few months you reckon.

Once again you watch how the battle developes.
To your surprise, without you the melee was rather even when you weren’t interfering even despite the advantage of numbers you initially gave them. Sure, it’s still 5 vs 3, but at the same time, one of us is in the match in name only.

The Show goes on. What do you do now?
>The nearest guy to me just finished off his opponent, let’s go say hello to him.
>Just wait and see how this developes.

Specifically; keep an eye out for whether any of our chaps are in trouble. If somebody is, step in & help.
>>
>>2202534
Err.... you could do that, but considering that it's a contest and not a live battle, you'll have a bit harder time actually judging when someone is "in trouble", seeing that they're relatively equal in terms of strength and skill.

By the time you've realized they're about to be struck down, you wouldn't really be able to move fast enough to prevent them being dropped out.

Like in a real battle if someone would get wounded or pushed to the ground, you'd be able to tell when it's a good time to step in, but seeing that the rules of the tournament disqualify you the moment you fall down, it's not really that simple.

I mean, you'd maybe be able to do it with a gun, not with a sword when the guys are out of your sword reach + hovering over your allies like a helicopter parent, waiting for them to fuck up so you can interrupt the blows which threaten them would dishonor the contestant.
>>
>>2202567
Oh. Fair enough, then.
I change my vote to:

Basically, waiting around gives the rest of the contestants an opportunity to beat someone and thus earn the ransom.

Going for a 4th kill is if you are hungry for coin and glory.

There is ultimately never an option which makes everyone like you. Question is what are your goals here?

I use the same system as always.
4 is the rank for your cunning which is used for distraction.
4 is the rank of your fighting and you get 1 bonus dice for that from your training, which means you get to throw away the lowest dice of those five.

That means you put dice+9d6 into the options field.

That's also the reason why I was using a metric fuckton of dice, because I was rolling for all 13 other contestants.

Because these are thus far nameless squires, they don't get 3 tries for individual rolls unlike people who are actually competent enough that the 3 tries for each roll is excusable.
>>
Rolled 1, 6, 5, 3, 3, 2, 3, 1, 1, 6, 3, 6, 6, 4, 3, 1, 2 = 56 (17d6)

Results of the dice aren't affected by the people who roll them.
Except when you roll exceedingly well or poorly.
>>
Let's put it this way, it doesn't matter if you roll badly anymore, you can only roll better at this point.
>>

>Challenge is issued
>Khorne is pleased

You grip your blunted tourney blade, still red with blood of your fallen opponent and point it towards the nearest free contestant.
NEXT. YOU.
As you take a few short steps, with your bloody blade pointed at him and decides that you’re either too dangerous to ignore or that he simply refuses to back down from a challenge.

Either way, he charges, still panting from his last bout and abandons all defense in favor of trying to take you down as quickly as possible.
This, however, does not happen.
Your defense holds as the much larger squire in his glimmering scale armor gives all he has towards trying to rush you down, but you aren’t so slow that you’d fall to such an attempt.
Every blow blocked, parried or dodged by the skin of your teeth until you finally manage to return the favor, a stab straight at the Solar Plexus and the exhausted squire falls to his knees.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvV3z-XG2JA

Once again after felling your opponent, you watch the rest of the field.
The match is decided at this point. Though your opponents valiantly defend to the last, possibly to diminish the shame of being taken out in the first round or simply trying to claw a small shard of victory from this, they all fall one after another to exhaustion, superior numbers and skilled blows delivered with purpose.

Though you were the youngest of contestants in this lot, today you stand tall, victorious and triumphant over the battered bodies your rivals. This Contest was yours without a question.
After brief checking for injuries and rest, the ceremonial exchange of arms would take place where the losers would yield their armor and shields to the victor as was tradition.
Arms too if fight was with live steel, but such is not the case this time, the blunted weapons were made not to kill unlike in the more ancient contests where fights were until first blood.

Your bounty is as follows.
4 regular shields
2 Suits of Scale Armor
2 Suits of Padded armor reinforced with leather.

The losers and winners both stood accompanied by their knights around a large cloth placed unto the ground with the spoils of victory placed unto the sheet.
The Losing Squires would be in their regular clothes, rather in their armor whilst the winners would stand in full battle gear.

How do you wish to handle the matter of loot?

First impressions are important, we can make a killing later by making spirits.
>>
>>2205761
I keep forgetting my trip.

Also, before we do any war or adventuring, let's actually get our alcohol stuff going. We spent time researching that and money is always nice.
>>
>>2205764
The more money we have now the more we can bet and then we'll have more to start the spirits up. But I'm pretty sure we're still a few years away from setting it up
>>
>>2205761
How much are you exactly expecting to make with your spirits?
Wine merchants rarely come anywhere near lords in terms of their income.
>>
>>2205766
Well, you certainly wouldn't want to try and start making spirits now because this is the year of the false spring. This means that Winter is gonna come back in a bit, which in turn means that food prices will go up, because increased demand in exports.

There's also the fact that War can be quite profitable as certain investments tend to give a whole lot of returns as conflicts emerge. After all, everything tends to become a lot more expensive.
>>
>>2205771
Not as much as with arms or conquering people but I'm fairly certain it'll be wayyy harder for spirits to catch on than guns
>>
>>2205794
Well, there's going to be a demand for certain, but people won't seek you out for the stuff.
It's going to be a lot harder for spirits to take off when it's essentially a luxury good held under a strictly controlled monopoly by you.

Also, it will require somewhat educated labor force to operate the distillery anyhow.
>>
By the way in case you didn't realize, the market prices for their gear are relatively high.

600 silver stags for each scale armor
300 silver stags for the padded leathers
30 silver stags for each shield

Provided they agree to pay the market price ransom, which isn't so certain for the poorer squires, you'd be able to amass 1920 silver stags.
You've bet 720 stags thus far.

Changing my vote to full ransom. We don't need full honor, just enough honor to be a knight. We're going to be gunning people down in the future, "Kill a man before he sees you". If honor wasn't on the line I would support going full merchant on these squires.

I try not to take sides whether you believe me or not.
What I do try however try to give enough information to avoid salt so you don't blame me for the decisions you make.

In this particular instance your personal honor would have cost you quite a bit of gold with nobody but you ultimately knowing the true cost of that gesture.
That alone doesn't make it an invalid choice.

Of course, I'm not 100% unbiased but should you choose an option that's less than profitable or even self-destructive, I will always allow that and I will try to write the story in the direction the players wish to take it.

Just, you know, ASOIAF doesn't really have plot armor save in the form of destiny points, which are a limited resource.
>>
>>2209255
Which means that even if you build up a narrative, that only has as much power as the NPCs believe it does.

>nobody but you

Except all the squires, and their knights, and all the people who worked the melee, and the hosts....
>>
>>2209267
What I'm referring to here is that the 1920 stags that you would have given up was far from the true cost of Honor.
The True Cost of Honor would be in the loss of the Winnings.

Essentially, by gambling the 1920 stags on top of the 720 stags you already put in, you'd stand to gain almost 1000 Gold Dragons from the gambling, which is no small amount of money by anyone's standards.

That's what I was referring with the true cost of Honor.
>>
>>2209272
Except, we have zero guarantees the bet works. You don't even know if we even want to bet it all at that. It just seems like there's definitely a path you want us to take because you keep saying it over and over like it's already decided.
>>
>>2209267
Because those were such large sums of money we were talking about, I had to be absolutely certain you wanted this or else it would have been seen that I shafted you off a fortune.
>>
>>2209276
True, you have no guarantees.
It's also true that I probably shouldn't have assumed that you'd wish to gamble it even though you did gambled all your previous funds.

I don't really have a chosen path for you as I have ran out of premade material ages ago.
I apologize if you think the Isle of Faces bit was railroading, but it's actually in the lore that it repels common people that try to get to there.

Of course, had you rolled well enough, I'd have let you get in there through the magical defenses.

>Traditional Ransom
>1, 1, Both the Hedge Knights can afford to pay for their squires ransom.

[1/2]

Ser Hector Heronford steps forth.

"Honouring the time honored traditions and customs of contests of arms, you shall be offered a chance to reclaim your arms and armour of your with a ransom amounting to no more than what is considered the reasonable market price for such items with not as single coin more asked."

Knight with bull's horns on his shield steps forth, armored in plate painted in dark red and orange.
His face betrayed him of Stormlander descent.
"Aye, I'll pay form my Squire Hector you pompous git. How a man like you managed to get a Squire like that, I'll never know."
"Much Obliged Ser Eastbend."
Salty
He places a pouch of silver as well as couple of gold coins on the sheet on the ground and takes his Squire's arms and passes them on to his protege and smacks him on the head.
Upon receiving them, the Squire places his right hand upon his left breast and bows as was custom.

>Gained 620 Silver Stags

Next was a knight in an intricate set of full plate armor with three grasshoppers on his shield and plumage coming from his helm, apparently he was the one whose squire's hand you cut. Everything from his apperance screamed that he was a Reacher as well.
"Fair enough ransom. We shall meet it, though I'd like to learn the name of the Squire whose blade strikes so true."
Arthur of House Tallon, secondborn of Bryen Tallon."
"Hmm... I've seen that name more than a few times in Tournament listings. You come from good stock. Hardly suitable for someone like Ser Heronford."
"
You bow at him, not saying anything
"Right, the coin."
Likewise he tosses a pouch of silver coin onto the canvas alongside with couple of gold coins upon a hankerchief.

>Gained 620 Silver Stags

Next were the two knights clad in coats of maille, one with a horseshoe on his shield and another with a fife. Hedge Knights most likely, probably local ones too from what you can tell.
The one with fife on his shield steps forth.
"Here. 320 Stags."
He tosses it to the sheet and takes his squire's equipment.
The Horseshoe knight follows suit.

>Gained 640 Silver Stags

Once your ransoms were handled, the rest of them handled their own ransoms in a civil manner.
Afterwards, everyone shook hands with one-another, even the Squire whose hand you mangled, participated, though it wasn't much of a handshake through the wrappings, merely an impression of it.

Still, it was rather impressive that the squires all went through it despite the bruises and injuries they suffered from the melee. If nothing else, they certainly were valorous if not so very skilled.

You walk back with Ser Heronford to your family's quarters, your ransom tossed into to burlap sack over your shoulder as again, was tradition.
"Did you see their faces? They were positively green with envy."
Ser Hector's face was shining with pride with a wide smile beaming across his moustached face.
"Is that truly chivalrous conduct? Ser Heronford?"
"Perhaps not, but they had it coming to them for a long time. You did good."
He gives you a pat on the back

You see your family's streamers in the distance as you walk towards the wall.
"Looks like you've earned enough to get yourself a decent suit of armor."
"Think I should get one?"
"Probably not just yet. Competition will get a bit tougher from here on. Wouldn't want to lose an expensive suit of armor that you've barely worn."
He empties the remainder of his flask to his throat.

"Don't think I can win? I did trash those other squires pretty well didn't I?"
"The Peasants and Dregs will have dropped out by the second round. Real Challenge starts here."
"What do you mean?"
He smiles at you
"Just that. Lot of Contestants don't compete to win the tourney, but rather for the ransom money. If you manage to take out someone with more expensive armor than you, it doesn't matter if you lose to them."
He puffs out his chest
"Of course, I would never do anything so unchivalrous."
"Right..."
"Don't worry, though they may be bigger and stronger than you, It's unlikely they can match your skill with a blade."
He looks towards the sun
"There's still a while until the feast, get yourself presentable. No doubt after a performance like that, you've been noticed by the other contestants"

[1/2]

You decide to once again go and make some bets. The Bookie looks at you a bit oddly, but can't truly prevent you from gambling as you legally speaking are an adult.

"I know I can't exactly stop you from betting since you are legally an adult and all, but are you absolutely certain this is what you should be doing with your money boy?"
"Yes, I am absolutely certain."
He shrugs
"Alright then young lad, I'll line up your bets, but only because you so insist."

The Betting station was a very heavily guarded, large elevated wooden stand in front of the Wailing tower for ease of access to the vaults. All the coin spent in the Tourney will be kept there and there was a good dozen men keeping books of the deposits from not only the bets lined up, but also on the money earned by the businesses operating in the Tourney.

As he wrote up the bet, you received a token made of brass minted on the spot with the amount of your bet on one side, numbers of entries as well as the date and with the Bats of House Whent on the other.

The Token would apperently not be useful for the cashing in the prize if someone just found it as it was made in your name, but primarily serves as evidence for a debt made. Of course, it was not foolproof, but it symbolized how seriously House Whent took this affair.

Leaving with your pockets empty once again, you had some time to kill, so you decided to hang with your brother Bob whom you were seperated from approximately two years ago when he became a squire.

His room was a fair bit larger than yours. His room also had a balcony from which to observe the tournament proceedings. Perhaps Harren the Black had the rooms on the walls designed to have a view to the courtyard for such a purpose? Then again it could be just to help with the ventilation.
The door to the balcony was closed as of now.

"It's a bit chilly this far North don't you think?"
"That so? Maybe it's a bit more drafty in here thanks to the balcony. Wanna swap?"
"As if. The view is worth a little pain."
You open the doors for a bit to check it out. The view was quite something. Whilst you weren't anywhere near the top half of the wall, the enormity of Harrenhal and the coloured streamers, the horses, the fancy clothing of the mingling nobility, the practice of the squires...
The people attending the tourney really had made the ruined castle come alive if only for a moment.
"Hey! Close the door."
You shut it
"Quite the event is it not?"
"First time seeing this many people?"
"In this lifetime I suppose. Another time perhaps."
"You still believe you've been reborn?"
"I've had little reason to believe otherwise considering my observations."
He gives a sad smile
"You really haven't changed a bit."
"Same can't be said about you. What the hell?"
"I did train pretty hard to get to this point, though I suppose the campaign in the Kingswood did do it's part as well."
"I've been meaning to ask, did you meet anyone interesting in there?"
His expression shifts
"Interesting as in...?"
"The Kingsguard? Or you know, one of other big names like Jaime Lannister for example."
"I didn't really talk with them, but I did meet them, yes."
"So, you or Jaime, who's harder right now?"
"Hard to tell, I didn't get to see him fight."
"Oh."
"So, was it true?"
"Was what true?"
"That I beat you so silly as a page that you didn't feel like becoming a knight?"
"Don't get too full of yourself Arthur."
He stands up from his recliner and lies down on the bed.
"I don't know, I guess I did feel like I haven't proven myself yet, you know? Like I hadn't done enough to receive my Anointment"
He rolls over from his back and faces you
"How about you Arthur you didn't get a choice in becoming a squire. Do you even wish to be a knight? If so, why? I don't really see it as something you'd have chosen."

Bob ponders at that answer
"Is that what Knighthood is to you? Just a matter of convinience? You don't have any ambitions of your own?"
You think a moment, there was one thing you wanted to do when you grew up.
"Well, there's one thing."
"Go on, let's hear it."
"I want to fly."
"Hah! Afraid you're stuck with that. Dragons and Griffins both happen to be endangered species."
You cross your arms and look at him smugly
"Wait. You aren't serious are you?"
"So what if I am? How hard can it be to make flying machine?"
"You've heard the tale of what happened to the Alchemists who tried to create an artificial dragon? If Gods intented men to fly, they'd have been given wings."
"I don't see any of the seven have any wings either, just saying."
He chuckles at that
"That's bordering on blasbhemy you know."
"Then they should have given them wings then, shouldn't they?"
"Now THAT I'm pretty sure is blasbhemy."
"Harsh."

There's a knock on the door.
"It's open."
Familiar face of Maester Jorvan peeks out
"I apologize for disrupting your family time, but the grand feast draws near."
"So you came as well? Wait, who is running things back at home if you're here?"
"Relatives from your mother's side, one Gartheon Norcross I believe the name was. He has been tutored to become a Castellan for years. But please, make yourselves presentable. It is not good to keep your Lord Father waiting."
"Thank you Maester Jorvan, we'll get ready for the feast immediately."
"Very good, I shall go and enjoy my dinner with the rest of my colleagues."
The Maester closes the door and leaves.

You stand up from the chair and stretch out your arms.
"Guess I should also take my leave as well and get ready for the foodage."
You jump out of your chair and stretch your arms
"One last thing before you go."
"What's up?"

You think on that a bit.
You came from an era of contractual obligations, not of some vague, but nevertheless binding oaths which could be forced unto people at the tip of the blade with no means of actually enforcing those oaths save by guilt and peer pressure.

True, you could get your head chopped off for breaking an oath, but that really depends on the sort of oath you took. Oath of the Night's Watch? Off with your head. Oaths of Celibacy? Slap on the wrist and a good laugh. Knight breaking the oaths of protecting women and children?
Ten Hail Marys or Mothers or whatever and a reward from your lord for a job well done.

"I don't think I'd keep either of the oaths unless I felt like either oath was worth keeping."
"So you'd be perfectly fine with being called a false knight?"
You shrug
"Can't please everyone. Anyhow, I gotta hurry up and change something far more uncomfortable."

You returned to your room and were dressed by one of the servants into a Doublet and Breeches woven from silken thread, coloured in the green, black and white of House Tallon. As you reached downstairs, the carriage was awaiting to take you to the Hall of a Hundred Hearths.
Harrenhal was not such a large place that it was far more comfortable to navigate the interior by horse, especially when one was wearing finery.
>>
>>2220855

[2/2]

The Hall of a Hundred Hearths was quite possibly the single largest room you've ever been in. The Antechamber itself was large enough to park an passenger airliner into, the main hall?
Though the main hall wasn't in the greatest state of repair, it was still magnificent behemoth, though keeping it warm was obviously quite a challenge.
The Walls were covered in Tapestries, many depicting either significant moments in history of Westeros, history of Harrenhal or in the history of house Whent. There was naturally a tapestry depicting this very tourney as well.

The floors were of smooth slate and there were two galleries at the ends of the hall, overlooking the feast. The place for musicians, entertainers and naturally the guests of honor. There were also some side rooms where the guests could get a moment of privacy and rest a spell, or to put it more bluntly, it was a place where people would either go to fuck, scheme or haul off the people who'd have passed out from all the excessive drinking.

The spread on the tables were quite massive, though it wasn't as if everyone could eat on the same table. Major Lords, Royalty, Guests of Honor and the like, they all ate from the finest table holding to the most exquisite dishes utilizing only the best parts of animals and best fruit whilst dining with masterfully crafted silverware.

The Heirs and Lords ate from one of the finer tables as well, though there was a clear difference in status between the first and second group. Dishes on this table were much simpler, though most certainly abundant. There even was a wine fountain at this section, the more minor lords were naturally seated further away from the best dishes and the wine fountain.

Bit further back were the places for the knights, spares, second and third sons and the like. Your place would be in here as was Ser Hector's. Pies, Ciders, Ham and Chicken are primarily the foods spread around your section of the table.

The Hedge Knights, Bastards, Squires and Pages enjoyed a bit more basic dishes further back, not necessarily made from the best parts of the animals, but at least there was plenty of beer at that table at the very least.

During the feast you decided to:
>Stay primarily at the table and socialize with the other people of your status
>To see if you couldn't find any of the squires you fought with during your match
>To see if you can't manage to mingle someone a bit higher above your status

Just so you know, feasts, tournaments and parties are generally speaking the best and only ways to make contacts and meet new people within high society.

There's gonna be plenty of feasting to come yet in the following days during which friendships, business partners and alliances are both forged and cast aside by the attending nobility and this is an opportunity for you to make acquaintances with such people from other realms.

Of course, disregarding the game of courtly intrigues is entirely possible.
There's plenty of well to do Lords who just go carousing to have a good time or get away from home but even so, there's no such person who doesn't have their own wants, desires and ambitions in life.

Robert is being pressured massively by the burden of his crown.
He utterly despises Targaryens, but at the same time his Targaryen heritage is where he draws his right to rule, which is why he is forced to sit upon the same chair as the Mad King.

He fills the hole left in his heart by Lyanna with rampant hedonism.

His marriage is an utter trainwreck where both Robert and Cersei hate eachother, but Robert seems to prefer to avoid conflict with her as was seen with his willingness to have Lady killed.

He also knew his children looked nothing like him, but willingly turned a blind eye, probably because he was already so beaten on the inside by the point that he needed someone he trusted to back him up to stand up against his wife.

After going out of shape, he no longer had the one thing that he could take pride in and he probably knew it.

The way I see it, Robert's depression might have been what caused him develope an eating disorder, thus becoming fat.
>>
>>2222628
You're right, I see how I was wrong. Mad King Aerys the sanest.
>>
>>2222628
Despite all this, Robert was a man of remarkable resilience and talent as he was a man who wasn't ultimately defined by his misery.

Whilst he completely neglected administrative duties within the small council, he was a man who was well known by the lords, making several public appearances.

His constant tourneys and willingness to take any excuse to leave the capital endeared him not just to the Lords, but to the knightly classes especially.

From the eyes of the peasantry, Robert's rule was time of abundance as few people would know the state of the treasury.
From their perspective his rule was blessed as summer lasted long, crops were abundant, there was plenty of coin and revelry going around and the King was no distant figure.
Prosperity seemed to flow inexhaustibly from the land.

The moment he died all went to shit.
Can you imagine the confusion caused by that war? No wonder they seeked solace in the faith.

The North is essentially the frontier territories of Westeros. Largely underdeveloped, but also great stretches of land with not enough people to clear it for usage. Think of like Russian Empire. They largely still cling to the old gods, though southron influence has slowly been creeping up. They occasionally have problems with the Wildling savages every now and then but climbing over the Wall is a pretty big hassle.

The Iron Isles are essentially a hold of the maritime people of Westeros. The only resource they have in abundance is Iron. They worship the drowned god which tells it's followers that anything that you don't deserve to have anything that you can't either make yourself or take by force. Not everyone in the Isles longs for the old way though as every region has their own factions.

The Riverlands is essentially the center of much of the industry in Westeros as thanks to the river powering their mills. The Rulers of the Vale, the Tullys are the weakest of all the Lords Paramount in relation to their vassals and as such they wield limited political power. Riverlands is also the center of almost every major war in Westeros and it's farmland keeps being pillaged by armies as that's how armies tend to resupply in this time period.

Westerlands are run by the Lannisters, it's the wealthiest region in Westeros thanks to it's mines producing a metric fuckton of gold. It's not the most populous nor fertile land, but they do tend to have more money and as such, their economical sector is pretty well developed. There are of course, always exceptions.

Dornish are the proud desert people which view themselves above rest of the Seven Kingdoms as they still fancy themselves as unconquered and wholly separate from rest of the Seven Kingdoms. The Climate they live in lends to production of various exotic crops, but ultimately Dorne is a rather poor region.

Stormlanders are basically what happens in CK2 when you refuse to have any City or Temple vassals and just keep building Castles for feudal vassals instead and as such, the people in there hold martial skill, honor and prestige in high regard. The Stormlands have far more developed martial tradition, but rather neglected economical sector overall.

The Vale is the place where Andals landed. They're the guys who brought the faith of the seven and knightly traditions to Westeros. It's a mountainous region filled with barbarians and knights killing each other, which is the most immediate problem to the development of Vale's economy as there simply are no safe trade routes and any rural settlements get raided.

Hmm...
Okay fellow /qst/-ers; what are our long-term goals?
The way I see it there are 4 real options:

1.) Start trying to establish contacts in the Iron Isles so that we can later establish a good source of lots & lots of lovely iron for building our stuff.

2.) Start trying to establish contacts in the Riverlands, wherein the early, green shoots of proper industry may be found, and we could (at some point in the future) establish a factory or factories.

3.) Begin sucking up to the Lannisters in the hope of securing a wealthy patron to fund our various projects with their infinite money cheat.

4.) Start trying to establish contacts in the vale, for superior opportunities to introduce some bloody savages to a bit of red-hot, high-velocity, civilization.

Personally, I'm changing my vote to

Well, I say Industry, but this is in medieval sense. Transport of goods is really easy due to natural canal and the watermills offer a pretty steady source of power for triphammers, sawmills and grinding stones.

Also, don't expect any technological progress any time soon, it's remained stagnant for good thousand or so years. There might be few individual artisans with skills surpassing common knowledge, but their techniques do not seem to spread, possibly due to the slow travel of knowledge and non-existent spread of techniques as nobody wishes to give up their monopolies.

The North for example still has places which is still in process of moving to the Iron Age from Bronze age. Almost every specialist in the region must be imported.
>>
>>2223183
There's also the abysmal levels of literacy, which mean that few could ever actually learn those secrets in the first place even if given instructions.

Most of Nobility is of the Military classes too, which means they see building mills and learning things not involving in their managament or military duties is a bit below them.

Maintaining Traditions seems to be work enough for most places.

Get contacts in every port in western westeros, and start up the best shipping work the world has ever seen.
If we invent a compass we could really make our routes faster and more effeicnt than anyone else, and dodge some pirates in the process.
And so Captains don't steal them we could say we need to refill the compass with "compass fluid" every year of so. That way they stay leashed to us.
Big money in shipping goods.

Riverlands sounds good, but it gets destroyed during wars, also it only has coast on the west side of Westeros. Vale has port potential and has a central location for shipping if we go the compass route. (We really should use that, it helps navigation SO much.)

As you sat on the table reserved for the less important guests near Ser Hector, you decided to dig in and have some steaming hot meat pie with some boiled peas and a herbal salad as a side dish, downing it all with a good amount of cider to sate your immediate hunger.

"See that Arthur? We are within the promixity of actual Royalty, eating in the same room as them. If you win the melee, you'll be guaranteed a seat of honour in their table next to the Kingsguard themselves! The Finest Knights in the realm!"

"I take it you are a fan?"

"You'll understand when you see them fight. It's not just their skill, but their conduct as well! They have completely dedicated themselves to the Chivalrous path and reached it's pinnacle, B
beloved and respected by all."

You look from your seat to the Gallery from which the Sword of the Morning overlooking the whole feast hall with an indifferent look. He was naturally wearing his arms and armor as Kingsguard fight against the unexpected

It's a bit of a funny feeling.
Man so feared and respected by his peers and you, capable of making him disappear with the pull of a trigger relegated to eating with the unimportant guests.

"Ser Hector, I did good, right?"
"Aye, you did splendidly. If you had been paying attention, you'd have noticed that there's plenty of squires that have been looking at you."
"Really?"
"Well, you struck 4 foes with down, each with a single strike at age of 13 without taking a single blow yourself."
"Right, and because of that, how about you do me a solid in return?"
"I'm in a good mood. Do tell"
"You've been traveling around for a while haven't you? If you know anyone important in here you could introduce me to, I'd appreciate it."
His smile vanishes and he puts his hand to his chin.
"Fine, I'll introduce you to some people. Come."

The feast was in full swing, people were eating, dancing, singing and playing various games which were deemed appropriate for the scenario. Nothing quite as stimulating as fingerdance in the Isles, but you did see plenty of men partaking in many contests of skill and strength alike.

Hector took you to a group of men chatting and playing what looks like darts.

"Ah! Hector. It has been forever since you left home. Good to see you! Have you decided to stop traveling and return home finally?"
"As if! I've still to finish tutoring my squire."
He was a man dressed in garish pink and yellow
"Arthur, this is my uncle, Lord Chrestan Erenford. The Master of Swans for Lord Frey."
"Ser Chrestan, meet the finest Squire in the land, Arthur Tallon."
"Pleasure to meet you young Arthur. Meet by good friends Ser Leslyn Haigh, Ser Andrey Charfton and Lord Tylan Nayland of Hag's Mire. We're all Frey men at this bunch."
"Pleasure to meet you good Lords and Sers. Tell me, what is it that the Frey men talk about."
Chrestan takes a sip from his cups.
"Mmmm! Boggers most recently. Fucking nomads. You're from... Reach, yes? You're lucky not having to deal with them. Listen to this, just this month, we had to break apart another encampment trying to settle in our lands yea? We found good fifty stolen sheep belonging to the various families living in our lands."
"So, what'd you do? Kill them? Send em to the Wall?"
"I wish! They're part of the Northern territories, so we aren't allowed to kill them in order to preserve peace. This isn't the first time this has happened either."
He grabs some darts and swings one in full force at the target
"Because they keep on migrating in their land, we don't know which Boggers belong to which house, so the only thing we can do is beat the shit out of them and banish them."
"Has Lord Frey tried appealing to the Starks?"
"Aye, but Winterfell is mighty far away and North is the Largest of the Seven Kingdoms. Any response from them will most likely take years, that is if there ever even is one."

Lord Tylan takes the darts from the target after Chrestan had his turn.
"You must forgive Ser Chrestan, he's grown quite frustrated that this affair hasn't gone anywhere. How about you join us for a game young Arthur and tell us about the Reach."

You took the darts and spent the rest of the evening playing darts with the Frey men, telling them of your time in Horn Hill, where Randyll Tarly liked to also speak in great length of his dislike of the Dornishmen that viewed the Reach with greedy eyes.

> Acquainted with Ser Leslyn Haigh, Ser Andrey Chrafton, Ser Chrestan Erenford and Lord Tylan Nayland! You may now talk to these people whenever you meet them without seperate person doing introductions.

Nah, you played quite well.

They did have a good time talking with you and they found the stories from Reach quite interesting as they themselves do not travel overmuch considering their occupation.
>>
Day 2 of Harrenhal's Tourney.

Just as Ser Hector said, the participants had dwindled quite a lot.
There were no unpainted shields, poor quality weaponry or cheap armors in sight. Those that had such equipment when they started either dropped out or were simply skilled enough to win better equipment from their adversaries.

You went out with Ser Hector to draw your straw in order to determine which team you'd be shuffled into this time.
"Ring 3, Team 1. That is... There."
There was an empty ring, still waiting for participants to arrive, so you went out to sit on the fence and wait for the other participants.

Then, the first one arrived with a straw on hand.
"This wouldn't happen to be the side of the team 1 would it?"
He was almost a man grown, wearing a Clarion on his shield, and his armor was of scale. Good start. At least he wasn't an untrained peasant.
"Aye, if that's what you're looking for, you found it."
"You're quite young."
"I've been told that."
"Interesting armor you've got. Not a whole lot of Squires have breastplates."
"Easier to repair I suppose."
"My name is Ronas Throng, yours?"
"Arthur Tallon."
"Yes, I heard of your fight. You broke through the enemy flanks and took down four squires, each down with a single strike. Very young contestant with a breastplate and a Heron shield."

Another fellow wearing scale shows up, this time one with a bat and a crescent on his shield.
"Drack of House Vallerd, pleased to make your acquaintance. I trust this is team 1."
"That it is. I'm Ronas Throng, this is Arthur Tallon."
"Wonderful, smiting eager peasantry was quite a distasteful experience wouldn't you agree?"
"It sort of does make you feel like a bully doesn't it? Still, at least they learned their place, wouldn't you agree Arthur?"
You shrug
"Some people just want to have a story to tell. Ain't no shame in that."

Just as you said that, some squires clad in Maille arrived, apparently squiring for Hedge Knights, but unlike the peasants you faced, these didn't look so green. Thomas with a Dice on his shield, Morr bearing a fox on his shield and finally Matt with a Lightning Bolt on his shield. All three of these squires came from Stormlands it seems and they got to know eachother during the feast apparently.

Finally, there was the last one.
Young man wearing a wolf on his shield and bearing arms and suit of maille of exceptional craftsmanship. Even if you did not recognize the sigil, you could tell just from his equipment that this young man was not a nobody.

"Greetings fellows. I am Benjen of House Stark, it seems we'll be allies for this match."
>You'll be fighting side by side with Benjen Stark, the thirdborn son of Lord Rickard Stark Warden of the North and Lord of Winterfell.

Well, I think in this particular instance it would be rather pointless.
You pretty much butchered your way through the flanks at your last match, so nobody's gonna say no if you want to take the guard of the same flank.

Overall this formation doesn't really have anyone's interests in conflict.
Ronas Throng heard of your fighting, so he's pretty much ok fighting by your side.
The Hedge Squires all met eachother during the feast, so they're ok with being put together.
Drack Vallerd being a man who does sort of care about status, finds it an honor to fight alongside a member of a house so well bred and prestigious as Stark.

I don't really think there's any reason to roll for this particular formation.
+ it's also tactically speaking sound.

>>2230263
But crits shouldn't work this way. According to that chart we would have downright killed him with another six, meaning the better we are at swordplay the higher chance for unintended murder.

Unless we actually plan on crippling or killing someone, criticals should just make our intended actions exceptionally successful.
Though I understand that accidents happen during tourneys but I think they should be reserved for critical failures, not successes.

Anyway, rolling.
>>
>>2230300
Don't worry. Because this is a tournament setting so the effects of crits are mitigated to a degree since you're not striking with lethal weaponry.

Crippling in this case just means you managed to fracture some bone, not like you crippled him for life or anything, but it means that he'll need a good while to recover unlike the other guy whom you struck with your blade that just got through this with stitches and even in the case of being struck with a killing blow, they'll still be able to roll endurance to see whether or not they recover, provided it's not a horrible death, but if they fail it'll still be a death.

You can lower the chances of fumbles quite easily with more bonus dice if you're worried about them.

Also, depending on the equipment used, I'll mitigate the results as is appropriate, but in this particular instance, yea, you did cause a bone fracture.
>>
>>2230323
But yea, tournaments are a dangerous business. Every large tournament usually ends with some casualties.
>>
>>2230300
But yea, if you do get 5 at fighting, which means effectively a Master fighter, you don't even need to roll to beat up people at like 2 or 3 anymore unless they're grouping up on you.

Also, you guys sort of DID make the conscious decision to NOT try and disarm the enemies or fight defensively, but instead attack them at full force.
>>
Rolled 5, 6, 5, 6, 5 = 27 (5d6)

>>
>Standard attack (fumble, hit ally)
>Standard attack (Critical hit with 4 sixes)

The Bell is sounded for the fights to begin.
Both groups of young fightiers form up in shield walls, grasping their weapons and preparing for battle.

Confident of your previous victories, you grasp steel and strike at the fellow at their flank as you approach one-another. However, pride cometh before the fall, your opponent dodges and your blade strikes at your ally.
There was no time to think, he strike was coming for you after that fuckup, you must intercept.
You turn your blade and strike with all the force you can muster at the opening to intercept.

”AAAAAARGGGGHHH!!!!! MY FUCKING ARM!”

He dropped his blade and dropped to the ground, clutching his forearm. You did your best to try and recover from your fuckup and you did. As he screamed out, the fellow next to him was distracted enough that Ronas managed to get a solid hit in.

Benjen Stark seemed to have managed to cause his opponent to yield. Both Flanks are now broken. Yours more so than the other. You’re watching the guy writhing on the ground, you’re pretty sure his arm is broken.

To be perfectly fair, this is still JUST a squire's melee.
