In a time of global conflict, the elite international task force Overwatch was formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. For a generation, the heroes of Overwatch protected the world, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and was finally disbanded by official U.N. order. Soon world conflict and terror rose again. Governments weakened by strife ceded power to mega-corporations. Militaries were replaced by private security forces. Some omnics returned to war with humanity; others remained peaceful, but faced fear and violence from humans affected by the war. The global crime syndicate Talon, in the absence of their perpetual rivals, rose to vast wealth and power, pushing entire nations into chaos.

You are a young man who's been many things: adventurer, treasure hunter, freedom fighter, and international criminal. But before all that, you dreamed of helping defend the world with Overwatch. When you encountered Tracer on that fateful night and agreed to help her rebuild, you didn't quite realize what you were getting yourself into. Joining as the first new recruit of the reborn team, you soon found yourself as unofficial leader in coalition with Athena, apparently the world's only benevolent Mind.

In the weeks since then, you, Tracer, and your new friends have travelled the globe, recruiting former agents and newcomers to the cause, and doing what you can to protect the citizens of Earth from the forces of chaos, oppression, and war. Although most people don't realize it yet, Overwatch has returned. But against Talon, Anubis, and the allied megacorps, is one small team of vigilantes really enough?

The world needs heroes, and you're trying to be one of them.

Last time on Overwatch Quest:

The Titan mech, Korea's recurring nemesis, rose from the waters of the Pacific Ocean and marched on Busan, destroying everything in its path. With the Korean military committed to the northern front with Czernobog's army, it was up to Seeker and the Overwatch agents to stop the Titan.

After a rough landing, our MC aided the ace mech pilot Dva, in town on a forced publicity tour, in defying her superiors. Together with Dva, you infiltrated the interior of the Titan and destroyed its control centers. Just when you thought you'd won, Anubis made an attempt to assimilate the mech for his own ends, but you put a stop to that as well. The Titan was disabled, and the city of Busan was saved.

After the victory, facing a court-martial and a return to the restrictions of being a public relations pawn, Dva accepted your invitation to join Overwatch.

It's been a few weeks since then, and while adjusting to having a bratty, outspoken teenager on the base is still a challenge, her reputation as a war hero granted her some measure of initial respect. Since then, her impressive performances in initial training exercises has everyone looking forward to seeing her in action in the field.

You made sure she feels welcome as a member of the team.

Choose 1-3 ways to make Dva feel welcome:
>Interrupting her stream while wearing an animal mask.
>Turning the water cold when she's in the shower.
>Offering play-by-play commentary on her PT sessions.
>Just generally being a wisecracking asshole.
>Write-in.

Unfortunately, she has been returning the favor by not only beating you repeatedly in video games but also:
>Making fun of your lack of height difference.
>Cold water shower counter-strike.
>Sharing embarassing stories about you with the other girl agents.
>Just generally being a snooty bitch.

So I'm new here and i just binged read this entire quest but this kind of bothered me.

How does Tracer change into different outfits, doesn't that thing lodged onto her keep her into this timeline or something?

Also who is lewder Mercy or Tracer?
>>
>>2210740
Odds are she can take it off and be fine for a decent amount of time.
>>
>>2210740
The thing 'lodged' onto her can-

>>2210757
Well, this.
>>
>>2210740
Tracer doesn't need to wear her time anchor at all times. As long as she is within close enough proximity of it (or is in a room specially designed with the same technology), she'll be fine. Winston did precisely the latter and gave her special lodgings so she can live in comfort without wearing the harness 24/7.
>>
>>2210740
>>2210762
Plus, if she ever loses the time anchor (like she did in the Doomfist cartoon), Winston can eventually find her again in the timestream and recover her.

Maybe.
>>
>>2210762
i thought we had shared bunks, not seperate rooms or did we upgrade?

I kind of forgot?

You oversee several of Dva's initial training sessions and PT evalutations, ostensibly in a supervising position as Overwatch's de facto commander. But really it's so you can sit in the observation area and make fun of her by doing play-by-play commentary. Sometimes one of the other agents drops by and joins you, getting in on poking fun at the rookie agent.

"She's closing in, ladies and gentlemen," you say into a pen you're holding up like a microphone. "Her fifth pull-up in a row is within striking distance. Can she do it? Is this the day, Chris?"

"Hard to say, Al," Tracer says. "But she looks like she's gettin' real close. Ooooh, she's tryin'. Look at that face!"

Dva's face is red with frustration, partly in anger at you, partly in intense effort as she struggles to lift herself up to the bar for the fifth time. Reinhardt stands nearby with a clipboard and stopwatch, looking on. Dva's hand slips, and she lets out a gasp as she tries to right herself, but the other hand slips off as well and she falls right on her ass. She winces and rubs her behind as she picks herself up.

"Ohhh, and she hits the dirt!" you cry out.

"She'll have a sore bum after that one," Tracer says.

"But you have to applaud another valiant effort from our competitor."

"Why don't you come down and help spot me?" Dva calls out to you. "Oh, right! You couldn't reach that high!"

Tracer cracks up, and you feel a flush of embarassment. "I'm not that short, dammit! I'm -- I'm average!" Tracer gives you a pitying look and pats you on the head which just makes you feel worse.

The verbal jabs continue back and forth over the weeks that Dva settles in. You manage to keep things from getting heated, staying within "friendly rivalry" territory, but it sometimes gets intense. You have a covert advantage from everything you know about Dva from her stream, but she gains plenty of ammunition to use against you from a couple of afternoon tea gossip sessions with Tracer and Mercy, where she hears all about the various goof-ups and embarassments you've inflicted on yourself since you joined Overwatch.

There was also that time you contracted Hackercat to hijack Dva's vidstream and put an overlay of Kappa on her face, but hide it from her own computer processing the stream. She chattered away for several minutes thinking everything was normal, a huge grey smirking face plopped overtop her own, before the messages in chat finally became overwhelming and she checked her feed on a different source. She stormed out of her quarters shouting your name, but you acted innocent. Hackercat later sent you some video clips of the event, and you both had a good laugh.

It wasn't so funny later, though, after Dva turned off the hot water to the showers when you were inside. You couldn't prove it was her, of course, and she could do an even better innnocent act than you. None of the security footage showed her near the water controls. Could Athena be in on the conspiracy?

One evening at sunset, shortly after a wholesome dinner -- Reinhardt and the kitchen drones made schnitzel -- you spot Dva alone sitting up on top of the communications array building, looking out at the sea with a wistful gaze.

It hits you how much she's given up by doing this. The military might have restricted and confined her, but at least she was in her country with legal citizen status. She had order, structure, and a clear purpose of protecting her friends, family and homeland. Leaving everything she's ever known to join a vigilante squad must be difficult.

She hasn't noticed you yet.

You head up to the roof of the comm array. Dva hears you coming up the stairs and watches you warily as you approach, but you just sit down next to her and look out at the sea without saying anything. Eventually she turns back and looks out as well. The two of you spend a quiet moment watching the golden sunset's reflection dance among the waves.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" you say. "That was one thing I didn't expect when I joined. I figured I'd be living in some cramped military facility where I'd be looking at concrete and steel all the time. And you know, there's a little of that. You should have seen where we were sleeping before we got the dorm rooms built. But there's also this." You gesture out at the view.

"Yeah," she says. "It's really something." A gentle sea-breeze stirs her chestnut hair.

"It must be tough," you say to Dva. "Leaving your home behind for a crazy long-shot. I've been there."

"When you joined up?"

"No. Before, actually. I left home a long time ago. Joining the team was more like finding it again. I know what it's like, though, striking out into something unknown. Your friends, your family, your house, everything that's been stable in your life suddenly gone. It's tough. That feeling of belonging somewhere is gone. You'll find it again." You wait a few moments before asking, "How do you feel about your decision?"

"Good," she says with resolve. "I mean, yeah, I went AWOL from my country's military, and my squad is on the front lines against Czernobog without me, and my family is probably in a government compound somewhere now, and I'm an international fugitive. But other than that, great!" Her voice cracks a little as she says this. The breeze kicks up again, stronger this time. Dva wipes something away from her eye. "This stupid wind ..."

"Do you wish you could go back?" you ask quietly.

"No," she replies firmly. "I've made my decision. This is the right thing to do. The war isn't going anywhere. One soldier isn't going to make a difference there. But here --" She looks down at her white-gloved hands. "Here I can do something. I can make a difference. I know people think I'm just a brainless starlet, that I get shuttled around between movies and PR stunts. But I'm not like that. That's not me. I want to fight!"

"I know," you say. "That's why I invited you."

Dva smiles at you, and you feel like despite your friendly rivalry she knows she can depend on you. You let a comfortable silence extend for a few moments before asking, "How do you feel like you're settling into the base?"

"It's all right," she says. "It's no Hollywood hotel, but it's a lot better than a military camp. The food is better, too. I wouldn't have guessed that so many agents could cook."

"They had seven or eight years in between teams," you say. "Guess they had to fill the time somehow. Plenty of opportunity to learn something about food. Unless you're Tracer, in which case apparently you eat pizza and take-out for almost a decade."

Dva snorts lightly with laughter. "Really?"

"Really. She tried to help Mercy cook one time and -- let's just say it was one time only. She's a real goofball sometimes. We love her, though."

Dva says, "I like her. Everyone has been nice to me. Except you, of course." She sticks her tongue out at you playfully.

"Ahhh, I'm just a schoolboy at heart, you know? I tease you because I like you." You give her the roguish smile and see her look away bashfully. You stand up and rest your hand lightly on her shoulder for a moment, saying, "I'm glad you're with us, Hana," before taking your leave.

So how exactly are we going to get around the addition of Moira to Talon's roster? Doomfist, too--he was released sometime after our last non-OVA thread, right? She's a nasty fighter in a scrap and her past history with our own Dr. Ziegler in the Overwatch organization might make for some...enlightening conversation, when we get around to it.

Few agents have civilians they are close to -- this life enforces a certain isolation from the ordinary citizenry -- but those who do take the time to write to them. Some take up hobbies. McCree and Hanzo have been seen dangling fishing lines from the cliff by the comm arrays. You and Dva set up a small corner of the base as a games room with an old monitor and video game consoles, where you and Genji struggle in vain to beat Dva at any video game ever. A Sisyphean task, and a humiliating one at that, as Dva takes every opportunity to rudely celebrate her victories, often dancing on the coffee table with her skirt swishing as she praises herself and mocks your skills, lineage, and sexual prowess.

Torbjorn is mostly healed from the wounds he took in his brutal solo battle against the guardian of the Avalon Vault. You were a little worried he'd hold a grudge about you abandoning him to chase that girl. But he agreed that the mission, stopping those weapons from getting into the wrong hands, was the important thing. "What's another organ or two replaced by machines?" he says. "I've hardly got any of the real things left at this point."

That was an interesting night, you think while on the way to the Situation Room. Many times you've gone over it in your mind, thinking about your mysterious doppleganger, the girl referring to herself as Bandit, your old identity. Her costume wasn't perfect, but it was enough to be weird, especially up close. It was like fighting against a mirror. One that shot back.

You haven't come any closer to figuring out who she really is. A modified clone of you, grown in the Lucheng bio-vaults? An alternate universe version of you, slipped through a dimensional doorway? An insane admirer? A crazy ex-girlfriend? Pharah? Silver? Brigitte? You even have a surreal moment where you wonder if she's the real Bandit and somehow your entire history, all of your memories, are just a fabrication. What if you were the fake Bandit the whole time? You shake off the eerie thought.

Have you told the team about your strange female copycat, or have you evaded the subject and asked Torbjorn to do the same?

Who did you tell?:
>Only one or two people who you're close to.
>The "inner council" of veterans.
>Everyone.

What did you tell them?

>Nothing. With Talon, the megacorps, and Anubis on the loose, the team already has too many things to worry about. This is your problem, and yours alone.

You called together the veterans of the old team. Tracer, Winston, Mercy, Reinhardt, McCree and Torbjorn. Genji had disappeared with his brother on a mysterious ninja mission, but you would fill him in later. Gathering in the situation room, you told them about what happened in the Avalon Vault. They already knew about the mission, of course. You had to tell them since you brought back the Positron Rifle and all -- awkward otherwise to explain to them why there was a superweapon in the lab. But you hadn't been specific about the enemy you faced. You needed to try and come to grips with it first. Having gotten nowhere, you decided to inform the team.

You left your mask off, lying on the table.

"So you're sayin'," McCree said, a puzzled look on his face. "That you fought a girl version of you."

"Pretty much, yeah," you acknowledged. "I've been trying to figure it out since then -- wanted to have some kind of clue before I told you all -- but I've got nothing. Just ideas. Maybe she's a clone? Alternate universe duplicate?" A hollow laugh escapes you. "I even had this idea it might be my mother. Some kind of age-reduction gene therapy or advanced power armor. Chasing her lost youth, or some kind of insane revenge scheme. She's done some crazy things when it comes to me. I wouldn't put it past her."

"So she called herself Bandit," Tracer said. "That's the name you used before you joined us, right? That's what you called yourself, that first night."

"Yeah, I used a few names during those years, but I was mostly Bandit. Uhhm." This was difficult to admit to that room. You've grown close to these people, started to develop friendships with them. But they're also still your heroes from boyhood. It's hard to admit some of the things you've done to them.

"Go on, luv," Tracer said. "We're listening."

"I was a thief," you started out with. "Some of you know this by now, but I'll come straight out and say it. I liked to think of myself as a treasure hunter, or a freedom fighter, but it's just a question of point of view. I started out by taking things from the old tech-vaults, things sealed away that no-one would miss. But I grew bolder. I moved up to the corps. Sometimes it was something the executives were using against the people. Weapons, drugs, payment records. Sometimes it was something valuable, or just for the thrill of it. Every once in a while, I'd steal something just because I knew it would hurt someone. I'd take something they loved."

"Why?" asks Mercy.

"Because I saw what they were doing to the world," you say. "Trying to establish a new feudalism of greed. Taking anything they desired, no matter the cost. Doing anything they wanted, no matter the risk. Someone had to do something. I had to stop it." You hesitate. "At least, that's what I thought at the time. I'm starting to see that it was only partly true. It was personal. I wanted to hurt them. I wanted to hurt them like --" You realize your fists are tightening, and you force yourself to relax.

"Go on," Mercy said gently. You look around at supportive faces, and take the plunge.

"All right, well, this isn't a confessional and you guys aren't priests, but I'll give you the short version. I was born into that life. An executive. A noble son. I hated myself for it. Wanted to do something about it. That's what I was trying to do. But I don't know if what I did actually helped anyone.

"That's why I'm glad to be on the team," you said, looking at everyone in turn. "It's finally a chance to do the right thing. To know that I'm making a difference."

You cleared your throat, embarassed after spilling your personal secrets to a room of your heroes. "Anyway, that's the deal. I figured it's about time you guys knew about this. It's relevant to the whole thing with girl-Bandit, so I gotta tell you as part of the team. And, well, most of you guys have been straightforward with me about yourselves, and who you were, and the things you've been through. I'll return the favor as best I can."

FemBandit hasn't shown herself directly since then, but Silver contacted you to know that a couple more jobs have been done that fit your old profile. People seem to think that she's you, back from whatever hiatus you were on. As much as it annoys you, the mistake is an easy one to make. The Overwatch version of your outfit is different, and you're not exactly running in the same circles anymore. It would be easy for your old contacts to think that this Seeker they see on darknet news running around fighting robots is some new guy, and the person calling themselves Bandit raiding from tech-vaults is the original.

The off-time from missions has come to an end, as Athena finishes an intelligence report from her darknet analysis functions. She has identified activity from Talon agents who have infiltrated several locations around the globe. Their objectives and timetables are unknown, but they appear to be trying to coordinate with local crime syndicates. Athena recommends sending a team as soon as possible, one that's ready for anything.

"It's about time we got a chance to be proactive," you say to Athena, looking at the holographic globe in the situation room, etched in blue light, the Talon infiltration sites marked in red. "I just wish we had a better idea of their plan. We're putting out fires where they flare up, but Talon is still making progress towards their ultimate goal, whatever that is. There's some bigger picture here that they see and we don't. Maybe this time we'll be able to link into their comm system and learn something useful."

You review the potential destinations and decide which Talon cell to deal with first.

Personally we should arrest them. Our standing how small it is would take a hit. Plus they have caused millions in damage and caused deaths due to their bombings. I think many people including some of our team mates will not approve of this. Blackwatch recruited criminals and look how that turned out and some people might think we are restarting it if we recruit them.

You decide that the Talon cell in Australia will be your target. There have been a lot of weird rumors over the years about Junkertown and the Queen, rumors about a secret treasure buried deep in the irradiated outback known as the Wasteland. Something like that would surely draw Talon's interest, and whatever the treasure turns out to be -- a weapon, a reactor, gold doubloons -- it's going to be something that's worth keeping out of their hands.

There's also the rumor, of course, that the explosive maniac known as Junkrat stole the treasure and hid it somewhere. That's got to be crazy, though. Right?

You take some time in the situation room to discuss options and various plans of attack with Reinhardt, Mercy and McCree. Most of the time since you joined up, you've all been reacting to one attack after another. This will be a good chance to go after Talon for a change.

When you and McCree exit the room to go find a coffee maker, talking about how that room really needs one installed, you find Dva waiting outside. "Uh, you can just go in," you say. "It's not a secret briefing or anything, we're just trying to avoid the "too many cooks in the kitchen" feeling. Everyone will have a chance to weigh in on how this goes."

"Oh. Huh. You really weren't kidding about having a loose chain of command here."

You shrug. "It's not really our thing. We're not military, at least not anymore. No reason to act like it."

"In that case --" Dva hesitates, then blurts out, "I want to be on the mission! I was sitting around for months before Busan, talk shows and PR vignettes and other stupid stuff. I want to help!"

>Sure. Let's see what you can do out there.
>No dice. You haven't finished training, and we don't have a satellite in place to supply you with new mechs.

"I'm not sure," you say, thinking it over. "We don't have a satellite in place to supply you with new MEKAs yet."

"So I won't use the self-destruct sequence," she says. "Plus if it does get wrecked, I've got my own gun! What have I been training for these past few weeks if I'm just going to sit in the cockpit?"

You look at McCree, who shrugs.

"All right, sure," you say to Dva. "Let's see what you can do out there."

"Woohoo!" Dva performs a victory pose from some obscure video game. "I'll show you I've got what it takes!"

That night you lie awake, thinking about the upcoming mission. This should be fairly simple, right? Get some intelligence on Talon activites with Athena's help. Track them down. Make arrests if possible, take them down if otherwise. So why do you have this nervous feeling?

You've been to Australia before, but only Sydney. Never the Outback. Certainly not the irradiated sector, the Wasteland. The rumors paint it as a harsh and unforgiving place, where if you don't die from radiation, heat, venomous insects, or drop bears, you're likely to get shot and robbed by the infamous bandits and rebels of Junkertown for your trouble.

Your previous encounters with Talon play out in your mind. The elusive and beautiful Widowmaker, whose bullets have nearly taken the life of an Overwatch agent on more than one occasion. The sly hacker Sombra, who hasn't yet revealed herself directly, but you know is controlling Talon's information warfare. The vengeful ghost known as Reaper -- despite having destroyed him yourself, you have the feeling you'll see him again. And of course, the two Junkers, the dangerous maniacs Junkrat and Roadhog, who seem to be working for Talon as mercenaries. According to rumor, they were kicked out of Junkertown, exiled by the Queen for some unknown offense. So it's hard to say whether they'll be involved in this.

You have no idea what to expect when you get to Australia.

It can't be that bad, right? you ask yourself, staring up at the ceiling.

Of course not, you tell yourself, and roll over to get comfortable. Nothing to worry about.

This will go fine.

Could we switch armor and gear before we go? Seeker seems to take a lot of hits every mission and a vote for an armor change seems like a good idea. Switching to medium or shield armor would work better for seeker I feel, seeing how often he directly fights and how he solos a lot.

The rattletrap convertible careens down the battered old highway, a long empty stretch of abandoned road that cuts a straight line through the desert. Wind blasts past your helmet at incredible speed. Your ears are filled with the roar of the engine, the chaotic blast of the stereo, the rattling of the car's less-than-stable chassis, and the wailing chorus of sirens. You turn around in the backseat to see the fleet of police cars chasing you, a line of red and blue flashing strobe lights stretched out along the road behind you.

Off-balance when the car swerves wildly to avoid a large stone, you fall out of your seat and land in the back footwell. You're still picking yourself up when a frosty beer can comes flying out of the driver's seat, clanks against your helmet, and lands in front of you.

"Sorry about that one, mate!" cackles Junkrat, twisted around in the driver's seat. "Crack yourself a coldie! You're in for it now whether ya like it or not now, so ya might as well enjoy it!" He lets out a maniacal laugh and starts drumming on the steering wheel in time to the loud music playing from the barely-functional stereo.

Grunt.

"Right you are, Roadie! Time to give these bronzies a shake of the tail!" Junkrat cranks hard on the wheel and goes off-road. Huge jury-rigged sand tires dig in and kick up a plume of red dust as the rickety vehicle speeds into the open desert. The police cars follow you, spreading out in a line that seems to cover the horizon.

"Now see here, mate," Junkrat says, twisting around in his seat again to shout at you over the din, seemingly forgetting to the fact that he's supposed to be driving. "The thing about the Wasteland is it ain't a place for tourists. If you ain't from around here then you're gonna get eaten up right quick! But you stick with me and Roadie here and you'll do all right. You'll see! All we need to do is--"

You shout, "Watch the road watch the road watch the road--!"

The car goes over a cliff.

You, Junkrat and Roadhog are thrown through the open roof into the air, and for a moment you feel like the coyote from those old cartoons, and that if maybe you just don't look down, you'll be fine. Then gravity takes hold, and, all three of you screaming, you start to fall.

Record scratch.

Freeze frame.

Yep. That's you.

Now you're probably wondering how you got into this situation, right?

Well, to find that out, we need to go back.

Earlier that day ...

You step into a bar in a small settlement and trade stop on the edge of the Wasteland. When your eyes adjust from the harsh sunlight outside to the dimness of the dingy tavern, you see surly men and women in dirt-stained mining gear or ragged, dusty clothes. Some show signs of radiation poisoning. An empty Rad-X vending machine lies askew on the wall.

You're wearing civilian clothes, hopefully frayed and worn enough to fit in around here, but your helmet is tucked away in its collar, and you've got your weapon. This is just an intelligence-gathering mission right now, so you shouldn't need it, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Everybody in the bar shifts to take a subtle look at the newcomers, then turns back to their drink. Your disguises as Australians seem to be working. So far so good. You turn to your companion, who is doing their best to remain inconspicuous:

You say to McCree, "Charming place, right?"

"Absolutely," he says. "Just the kinda place ya look for to crawl into a bottle after a hard day in the dirt." He lights up a cigar and says, "I'll get us a couple drinks. I'll even get 'em to wipe the glasses off for ya. Why don't you have a look around?"

McCree heads to the bar, trailing cigar smoke. You clear your throat and try to act natural. Even after years crawling the world's underside, you still don't feel at home in places like this. Something in the city with music and a lot of flashing lights, sure. Not here.

You head towards an empty table with two chairs nearby, casually scoping out the place.

You have a casual look around, trying to figure out if your contact is here and what you should be wary of. The glances from the other patrons are sullen but not overtly hostile. Still, you should probably take care you don't say or do anything too out of the ordinary. Easy to draw attention from the wrong crowd out here.

You spot a guy in the back corner with a slouch hat tucked down over his eyes and his boots up on the table.

"Hey there, pal," you say, taking a seat at the table next to him. "My friend and I are out here seeing the sights."

"Best turn around, then," he says in a thick Ozzie accent. "Ain't nothing out here but rads and desert."

"I'm pretty set on it," you say. "It's been a dream of mine for a long time to experience the, uh --" dust, thirst and death? "--the wonder and majesty of the outback."

The guy shrugs. "Your funeral, mate. Buy me a pint and maybe I'll tell ya about it."

You gesture to McCree, who brings over three pint glasses of something that might be beer. You ask the guy in the slouch hat what he does, and he claims to be a farmer. You ask what he farms, and he grins. "Best not ask that 'round here, mate. I'll tell ya about my farm, though. Lovely place." He starts to describe dimensions, distances and landmarks that don't make a lot of sense, until you realize he's actually giving you the information you need while pretending to talk about something else.

"I think I can figure it out from there," you say. "Thanks for your help."

From outside the bar, you hear shouting. Getting up and peering out the dust-stained window, you see a hovercar -- a clean one, factory stock without any of the weird modifications you find around here. A gang of young men dressed in tattered leathers and mohawks are dragging a pair of Omnics out of the car, laughing and taunting them.

"Please," you hear one of the robots saying. "We don't want any trouble."

One of the punks hefts a crowbar. "You fuckin' gearboxes asked for trouble when ya stepped off the robo-res." The punk strikes the bot in the face with the crowbar, producing a metallic clang and knocking him to the ground.

"Best leave it, mate," says your contact. "Round these parts you don't want to be known as a can-fucker. Bad blood between men and bots, or bad oil I guess." He sips his drink. "It's a shame, but folks 'round here are still real mad that their land was taken from them for the robo-res. You boys best finish your drinks and be on your way now."

You hear more clanging noises as the punk strikes the Omnic repeatedly with the crowbar.

"Your farm sounds nice," you say to the man in the slouch hat, tossing a couple bills onto the table and standing up. "Hope I get to see it sometime. Stay here and have a drink, Jesse. I got this."

The man sighs and pulls his hat down a little lower. "Can't say I didn't warn ya, kid. Good luck all the same."

McCree raises his glass as you head outside.

After taking a moment to adjust to the harsh sunlight, you get a good look at the four wasteland punks. They're wearing a motley assemblage of leather and crude metal, motorbike jackets and welding masks, outlandish hairstyles, holding tire irons and crowbars. You remember when two or three punks like these might've scared you off. But after facing down giant Omnic deathbots, a pack of desert rats like these don't seem like much.

The Omnics are on the ground. One of them is badly damaged, the other is trying to shield him with her body, pleading for his life.

"Nice hit," you say to the last punk to land a strike. "These fuckin' tin cans, right? They're always, uh. Taking our land and our jobs, or whatever." You try to remember what these anti-Omnic types use to justify their anger. The whole "susceptible to godmind corruption" thing might be a legitimate complaint, but in your experience, most assholes like these just beat the shit out of bots for kicks. Still, you make an effort. "Pencil-pushers think they can take what's ours and give it to these gearboxes."

You look down at the helpless bot, sparks flying from his damaged sections. Part of selling Omnics to the public was lowering their strength so they couldn't physically force their will on humans. The other side of that, unfortunately, is it leaves them targets for violence themselves. The bot and his companion look up at you, seeing another tormentor joining the ranks.

You were hoping to wait for a convenient moment where you could attack the punks and blame it on something else. But he won't last long enough for that.

"Mind if I take a shot?" you ask the punks while pointing at the bots. "I've been dying to get my hands on one ever since my girlfriend left me for vibro-dick."

The punks laugh. "Sure thing, mate," one of them with an impresive mohawk says. He hauls the female Omnic up into position, holding her in place for you. "Have at the fuckin' bitch!"

"Okay," you say, and you reach back and drill a haymaker into the punk's face, knocking him into the dirt. "Fuckin' bitch."

The other three are taken by surprise, and before they've gathered their wits you're darting among them. Two well-placed gut-punches and a kick to the nuts later, and all three of them are lying on the ground in danger of losing their lunches.

You brush dust off your shoulder. Didn't even break a sweat. Easy, right? Not sure what that guy in the hat was so worried about.

You look around. Nearby are three big cars with spikes and chains welded all over them. About thirty wasteland punks are lounging around them, and have just watched you kick the shit out of three of their guys. The ones on top of the cars jump down. All of them pick up their weapons.

"Ah geez," you say, and take off running, the wastelanders in hot pursuit.

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of places to dodge a thirty-strong pack of wastelanders in a small trading outpost like this one. You try to lose them in a maze of abandoned tin shacks and improvised shanties, but it seems that some of them know this area. You round a corner to see a pair of punks drop down from the roof in front of you. You turn to go the other way and see three more running your way. You look back the way you came and see the main pack closing in, whooping and hollering. Some of the punks have even stayed on the shack roofs, in case you try to climb for it.

You're boxed in.

"Fellas," you say, raising your hands, wondering when you should go for the gun. "Let's talk this out, okay? We're all reasonable people here."

"Do we look reasonable to you?" asks a wastelander wearing spiked shoulder pads, a hat with an ostrich feather plume, and no shirt.

"Looks can be deceiving," you say, trying to be optimistic.

The punks start to close in, savoring the imminent violence, but something stops them. There's a commotion in back of the main group. You see a wastelander get hurled straight up into the air and come crashing down. Panicked shouting erupts. Something about -- hogs?

Uh oh.

The punks scatter to the winds. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean you're alone.

"Hooley dooley!" says Junkrat, a wide grin splitting his face as he leans forward to leer at you. "Looks like we saved you from a right blue there, mate. Those tossers were about to have you and no mistake."

Grunt, says the gigantic man in a leather hog mask next to him.

"Good point, Roadie," Junkrat says, looking up at his corpulent friend. "I'd agree myself. One favor deserves another, don't you think so, mate?" he asks, turning back to you.

"I'm listening," you say. Honor among thieves, one good turn deserves another, and all that. You're not in a position to refuse anyway.

"Here's the deal, me bucko," Junkrat says. "Me and Roadhog have had our eyes on ya ever since your arrival on the scene. Seem like you've got a real sharp 'ead on your shoulders. Maybe not the full quid. I mean you did join that team of do-gooders. Fighting giant robots, corpsec, Talon flunkies? On purpose? All that shooting and violence. Who'd do such a thing like that, I ask you? Now!" He grins and gives you the finger-gun with his other hand, the mechanical prothesis . "How'd you like to come blow some stuff up with me and Roadhog here?"

"I'm not really in the blowing up business at the moment," you say cautiously. "But go on. Why me?"

"Oh, we 'eard you was involved in some fun stuff before this, so we asked around. Turns out this wanker in the mask running around with Overwatch is the thief who cracked the legendary Xanadu! Couldn't believe it at first. But then we realized, you were just the man for something we had in mind."

"And ... what something is that?"

"Oh, nothing much," Junkrat says, throwing a lanky arm in a comradely fashion around your shoulders. At this proximity you can smell him, unwashed outback dirt mixed with the oxidized odor of gunpowder and explosives. "Just one little job, that's all. It's really not a big thing at all. Just a teeny tiny little eesny weensy job."

Roadhog says, "Gonna blow up Junkertown."

"Wait, you can talk?" you ask. "And -- wait, hold on. Blow up Junkertown? Are you serious?"

"Mate," Junkrat says with an earnest expression, still with his arm around your shoulder. "Do we not look serious to ya?"

You're sweating profusely and thinking about just how you're going to play this, when you hear engines. The Junkers hear it too. For a moment, all three of you are still. Then Junkrat's eyes widen. "Ah, shit! It's the fuckin' bronzies! We'd better get outta here or we're sprung!" He and Roadhog start to head down the alley they came from. "C'mon, Sneaker or whatever it was you're callin' yaself. We've got a ride!"

"Maybe this isn't the best time?" you say, looking between buildings to see the oncoming wave of police lights. "I've got a private mail you can contact me at, it won't be the first time I've done jobs on the side since I joined the team -- oh, shit --!"

A metal hook flies out, snags you by the ankle, and hauls you off your feet.

Roadhog carries you upside-down by the ankles to the "car", a jury-rigged open-roofed rattletrap made of spare parts. He tosses you in the back seat, then somehow squeezes himself into the passengers'. Junkrat skids over the hood and leaps into the driver's seat, pulling at levers. The archaic internal combustion engine coughs to life, spewing exhaust. Junkrat jams down on the accelerator, the tires squealing. He speeds off just as the police arrive, and the chase is on.

(Continued)
>>
>>2214699

... and so that's how you ended up in mid-air above a canyon, about to fall to your death.

For a moment it seems like time has frozen. Is this really where your life will end? Falling to your doom after a reckless car chase, shanghaied by two insane Australians?

Roadhog hurls his hook at the cliffside. It snags on a rock projection.

He reaches out and grabs Junkrat with one meaty hand around the waist.

Junkrat lunges forward from his awkward position and grabs you by the wrist with his mechanical hand.

The three of you swing toward the cliff face like three demented Tarzans on a vine, and you wince as you approach the rocks at high speed, but Roadhog slams into it first, his vast stomach blunting the momentum and leaving you with only a bruised shoulder.

The three of you hang there, suspended above a certainly fatal drop.

"Now that's a fine how-do-you-do and no mistake," Junkrat says.

So you're hanging suspended above a huge drop into a canyon, a dizzying fall under your feet to the ground far, far below. Way too big a drop for your boots to deal with. The only reason you aren't falling is because Junkrat is holding on to your wrist with his mechanical hand, and Roadhog is holding him, and Roadhog's hook is attached to the cliff. So you could say they saved you, but of course these two idiots abducting you and driving off a cliff are the reason you're here in the first place, so does that really count?

"We seem to be in a bit of a pickle," Junkrat admits, scratching his head with his free hand as he looks about. "Any ideas, Stealer?"

"It's Seeker," you say. "Is that really so hard to remember?"

Carefully reaching out to take a handhold on the cliff face, you look up at the climb to the top. Getting up this thing the regular way would be impossible. But when you have wallrun boots, it's only close to impossible. With a desperate scramble, a misplaced step that almost sends you pinwheeling into empty space, and a gut-lurching leap at the end, you manage to grab the edge and pull yourself up on top of the cliff.

You flop onto your back in the dirt and take a moment to breathe a sigh of relief, before you hear the chorus of sirens and remember that dozens of police cars are bearing down on you right now. Your instinct is to run, but maybe handing over wanted fugitives to the police would be a way to gain favor? On the other hand, you're a wanted fugitive too. You'd think that the distinction would be obvious between a heroic vigilante and the explosives maniac who's a serious contender for the all-time record property damage record holder. But cops often don't see it that way.

"Yoohoo!" you hear Junkrat's voice calling out. "A little 'elp down here would be appreciated, mate!"

You go to the edge of the cliff and look down, wondering how the hell you're going to get get those two up here by yourself, especially Roadhog. But Junkrat is already climbing up his friend's back. He waves up at you. "Lovely day, innit? Toss me a rope or somethin'!" He starts pulling himself up the winch chain.

You take off your jacket and tie it into a makeshift rope, lean on your stomach at the edge and dangle the jacket-rope down. Junkrat reaches up with his long arms and just barely snags it. He wriggles up the jacket, clambers over you in an undignified scramble, and collapses in the dust. "Whoo! Thanks, mate."

You both get up and brush yourselves off.

"So," Junkrat says. "I'm guessin' that since you're a hero-type now, you're not about to let me blow up the lawmen over there, are ya?"

"Sorry," you say. "This straight and narrow thing can be a drag, I know."

Junkrat scratches his head. "Any other ideas what we should do regardin' this extremely large group of police cars drivin' straight for us?"

"Nope," you say. "Any ideas about how to get your friend up the cliff?"

"Not a clue," he says.

You both try to come up with something, police sirens getting ever louder and closer.

Then you hear a different engine sound cutting in over the mix. You look to the side to see a civilian car driving parallel to the cliff edge at a high speed. It brakes hard and skids to a stop in the dirt right in front of you.

(Continued)
>>
>>2217310

Vwoop! A blue blur streaks out of the driver's seat and forms into Tracer in front of you. "Hiya, Seeker -- woah!!" She realizes who your companion is and draws her guns. "Hands where I can see 'em, mister!"

"Woah there," Junkrat says, raising his hands. "We're all friends here, no need to make a fuss. How d'you do, miss? Name's Jamison, but most folks call me--"

"I know who you are," says Tracer. "You realize we've fought before, right? King's Row?"

Junkrat slaps his forehead. "That's what it was! I was tryin' to put me finger on it. You're lookin' lovely as ever, Tracey."

"Anyway," you cut in to stifle Tracer's incoming angry reply. "We need to get out of here before the cops arrive. We're fugitives, and while they wouldn't be able to arrest us, they might get hurt trying. And Tracer, I know this is going to sound weird, but -- I want these guys to come with us."

"What?" Tracer says, taking a step back. "Them? Oh, no. No no no no. This one and -- wait, hold on. Where's the other one?"

Roadhog's hook lodges into the edge of the cliff. You hear a motorized winch running.

You say to Tracer, "I'll explain later, but right now, you gotta trust me. Okay?"

She hesitates, then nods. "Okay."

You and Junkrat go to help up Roadhog -- it takes both of you to one arm, but you manage it -- and you get them both into the backseat of the car, Roadhog barely squeezing inside. "No funny business," you warn them, slam the door, and head to the front. McCree is there in the passenger seat, leaning back with his boots up on the dash and his arms behind his head. Fortunately there's a middle seat in the front you can sit on instead of riding the gearshaft with your -- well, gearshaft.

"Enjoyin' the local hospitality, kid?" McCree asks you. He turns around to tip his hat to the Junkers in the backseat. "Howdy, folks."

"G'day, mate!" Junkrat says cheerfully. "Name's Jamison, but most people call me--"

Tracer blinks into the driver's seat, pops the brake, and speeds off, kicking up a high tail of dust. She stays parallel to the cliff edge, the cops coming in from the side. The civilian car she's gotten ahold of somehow has a serious engine, one that can actually compete with the police cars, and she just barely makes it past the line and out into the open desert again.

"So," Tracer says, pausing as the car bumps over a sandy hillock. "Wanna give me the short version about why this is a good idea?"

We are the terrorist too in case you forgot. Also Orisa is a rogue AI made by a fucking 11 year old. Taking her means we have to babysit Efi so Talon doesn't kidnap her. Assuming Raven even has that piece of shit that could be called "lore" in this setting.

To a vast majority we may as well be the same.

But I think the point of this mission is to learn more about the Junkers so we can see how feasible recruitment is. At the very least we need to try and keep them from siding with Talon anymore

We need numbers and offensive punch. And not more DPS choices; we have enough of those as it stands. The Junkers give us that: Junkrat's great either frontline or for area denial, and Roadhog is just a gigantic mass of flesh and hook and shotgun blasts that can easily handle solo confrontations. We nab both of them, alongside D.Va, we should be good on offensive punch and we'd can begin refocusing on trying to find Support choices.

If we have to babysit an eleven-year-old, we babysit an eleven-year-old. Brigitte and Torb I'm sure would enjoy having an extra hand in Engineering, and Winston I'm sure can handle a whiz kid.

"I think we can work something out," you say. "Something that helps us both."

Tracer sputters. "But -- they're with Talon!"

"Sure, but superheroes have villain team-ups all the time, right?" Tracer looks at you, confused. "That is, I mean -- I think they can be a useful resource, if a dangerous one. And besides that, I owe them one for saving my ass back in town. Honor among thieves or something."

"As I recall," McCree says, "You're the only honest citizen in this car, Tracer. So you oughtta be used ta teaming with outlaws by now. Sometimes you gotta take things as they come."

Tracer groans in frustration but keeps driving.

"Hey mates," Junkrat says, turned around in the backseat looking out the rear window. "I think we got a problem on our hands."

"No bloody kiddin'?" Tracer says. "What tipped you off first? Was it the sirens or the flashing lights?"

"I mean another problem," he says. "One a lot bigger than a few dozen bronzies."

"What could be bigger than --" Tracer looks in the side mirror. "Oh."

You turn around to look out the back.

Okay them we don't put the A.I into combat until we're sure that she's on our side, maybe put her into Robo-Daycare with Bastion and have Efi work and learn with and from Winston, also isn't Athena an actual Godmind? And evidence that they can be friendly?
>>
>>2217564
Athena would be a Godmind if she wasn't chained and leashed to all hell.

And the fact is, AI are completely alien. They might be friendly at first, but eventually they'll diverge from our understanding of "friendly" and "good."

The Junkertown raider fleet has arrived.

A car with a massive spiked ram on the front plows into a police car, knocking it over and sending it skidding on its side. A truck has a wastelander manning a harpoon gun in the back -- he fires and the harpoon embeds itself in the ceiling of a police car, then retracts, yanking the car over and sending it tumbling in a destructive roll. Gunfire erupts from mounted machine guns, small arms, and the weird and wicked implements of destruction that the insane and inventive wastelanders of Junkertown have devised. The police cars don't have the armor or firepower to fight back, and soon peel off.

You ask Junkrat, "I don't suppose there's any chance they came to rescue you?"

"Mate," he says with a terrified look. "We just stepped in it."

"Big time," grunts Roadhog.

Tracer has a determined look on her face. "One of you two get ready to take the wheel," she says to you and McCree. "I'll do what I can do slow them down."

"You best drive, buckaroo," McCree says. "I ain't much of a car fella, but I know a thing or two about shootin' a movin' target." He checks the cylinder on his revolver, snaps it shut, then looks down the sights.

"Don't do anything stupid," you say to Tracer.

She grins. "I wouldn't be here with you if I was smart, would I?" In a blue flash she disappears from the car.

You grab onto the steering wheel and hold it steady as you shift over to the driver's seat. Once you gain control of the vehicle, you look in the mirror to see a blue light zipping in and around the Junkertown cars, chaos and destruction following it wherever it goes. As you watch, a tire blows out and the car goes flipping end over end through the air.

"Quite the sheila you got there," Junkrat says, watching in awe.

"She really is," you say, changing gears and getting ready to try and outdrive a fleet of savage wasteland raiders in their home turf.

Official Blizzard site says "Efi repaired and reconfigured the robot and installed a personality core that she had designed herself."
Sounds like Orisa is just a custom Omnic. and not the next Omnic Crisis waiting to happen. She bought Orisa with Grant money. If the Adawe foundation caught a wiff Efi would make a new god AI, do you really thing they would let Orisa be made?

"We'll help ya out, mates," Junkrat says, picking up his homemade grenade launcher. "Like you said, honor among thieves! Never let it be said that Junkrat and Roadhog were without honor, that they ever left an ally unaided, a friend unhelped, a--"

"They're here chasing you!" you shout at him, feeling a vein twitch in your forehead. "It doesn't count!" This fucking guy.

"Just relax, pardner," McCree says, unrolling his window. "We got this." He puts his left hand on his hat to stop it from blowing away, then leans out the window, aims the revolver, and fires. A Junkertown car's windshield cracks, and the car spins out of control and crashes.

Roadhog smashes the rear window with his elbow and clears out the glass with a swipe of his arm, giving Junkrat a firing line. The mad bomber whacks his grenade launcher to bring it to life and pulls the trigger, impelling spheres painted with madly grinning faces in an arc through the air. The bombs bounce and roll before detonating, a chaotic mess of explosions that sends multiple Junkertown cars flying. Junkrat is giggling and laughing as he slaps his weapon and another set of five bombs lock into place. Holy shit, does he have a fabricator in there making more bombs? The idea of Junkrat with practically infinite explosions might, other under circumstances, terrify you, but right now it's an incredible asset. Another series of explosions blossom among the Junkertown fleet.

McCree and Junkrat are doing work, and you're putting pedal to the metal, but the wastelander fleet is gaining. They're veteran bushrangers, and they've preyed on this land for years in vehicles custom-built for this purpose, riding down anyone weak or isolated in these lawless lands.

Two cars pull up on either side of you. One has a harpoon gun, the other has huge spinning blades affixed to its wheels like some kind of insane Ben-Hur chariot. A state of intense focus takes hold of you. When your gut instinct says, now! you tap the brakes. The harpoon gun fires straight through the space your car was about to occupy and instead lodges in the bladed car. The wastelanders shout and argue at each other as each car's occupants try to dislodge the harpoon from their side, the cable line drawing tight between them.

"Mister Roadhog?" you say. "If you'd be so kind?"

Grunt, he says, and leans out his window to throw the hook. It catches onto the harpoon cable, and he yanks on it with an assist from his winch. The cable tugs both cars off balance, and they whipsaw and swerve before one of their hoods strikes the ground and the car flips. You hit the gas and your car narrowly makes it under the harpoon cable before it pulls the second car off balance and they both crash and roll.

A metallic chunk sounds as Roadhog severs the winch's connection to his hook. He starts to draw up a new length of chain. "Got a fabricator for those too?" you ask.

Grunt.

"Seeker, I hate to bring up even more troubles," McCree says. "But it looks like a storm's a-brewin'."

You noticed that the sky ahead was getting dustier, but you figured it was just the effects of the chase. You didn't see that what you're heading towards is a cloud. More than a cloud, you realize as the epic scale of the thing becomes apparent. A towering storm of dust that looms for miles in height, filling the horizon, an awesome and terrifying force of nature.

No way around. Only way back is through the wasteland raiders.

"Looks like a real corker," Junkrat says. "Electrical storms in there that'll fry ya to a crisp. That's if the dust doesn't flay the skin off your bones. 'Course the raiders would have to be stupid to follow us in there." He giggles.

"We're going in," you say with a confidence you're trying to make yourself feel. For some reason you think of that movie you watched with Tracer. What was it that cool pilot guy said when he flew into the asteroid field? "Never tell me the odds!"

McCree says, "We didn't, but uh -- well, I just hope you're right about this." He rolls up his window and shifts his poncho around to cover the front. "Good thing I'm dressed for the weather."

Vwip! A blue flash zips through the open rear window and into the seat beside you. Tracer sits there, breathing heavily, her uniform torn, blood smeared on her forehead.

"Are you all right?" you ask, concerned. "You're bleeding --"

"It's not mine," she says with a dazed look on her face. "Just -- just keep going. I'm kinda tired." You expect her to add something about how crazy it is to be heading straight into the dust storm, but instead she just slumps back against the seat and stares at nothing. You wonder how much energy she spent back there. How much of her own personal timeline she just burned through in a few minutes of real time.

You forge into the storm.

Chaos surrounds you, a maelstrom of sand and dust and heat. A furious wind buffets at the car, threatening to pull you off course, and you clamp down on the wheel with both arms, forcing the car's path to stay straight.

The car protects you from the storm. Mostly. You get the feeling that if the vehicle had been seriously damaged in that initial scrap with the wastelanders, this would've been a bad decision. As it is, with an intact windshield and side windows, and the engine and tires fully functioning, your ride through the storm so far is uncomfortable as hell but not actually harmful. Unless you count the car's paint job.

The world is enveloped in swirling red dust. Through it you see flashes and sparks of blue light in the distance ahead, or sometimes catch a glimpse of the lightning bolt directly, the boom of thunder echoing under the roar of the storm. Behind you and to the sides, you catch faint glimpes of the spiked bodies of Junkertown cars. Guess some of them were crazy enough to follow you in. Nothing you can do about that now. All you can do is hold on, try to keep the wheel straight against the force of the storm, and hope for the best.

Who can say how much time has passed in this journey through the dust? It could be seconds. It feels like hours. The howl of the wind is constant. Over it, sometimes, you think you hear screams. The five of you are silent, willing yourselves to survive.

The car drives on.

(Continued)
>>
>>2217808

Finally you emerge, the dust thinning and then finally clearing, and you catch a glimpse of the blue sky above.

You are alone.

You pull the car behind an outcrop of rock big enough to hide behind, park, and get out. The storm is beginning to pass. You scan the area with your helmet's filters.

Nothing.

"They musta turned back," Junkrat says, climbing out of the car. "Either that or they got crispy-fried." He groans as he arches his back in a stretch, does a couple squats, then jumps up and claps his hands. "Whoo boy! That was a real smasher! If I didn't know better, I'd say the five of us make a real fine team!" He grins at you and holds out his fist for a fist-bump. "What do ya say, chum?"

"You know it, mate," he says. "You need anythin' to go explodey, I'm the man to do it."

Roadhog joins him. He looks down at his smaller companion without saying anything.

"I'm fine, ya big lunk," Junkrat says, giving the man a playful slug in his gigantic belly. "Got some sand in me teeth, that's all."

Tracer and McCree have a short, quiet discussion before they join you outside the car. Tracer has an annoyed expression on her face and her arms folded. She huffs air up to blow a spike of hair out of her face. "I ain't happy about this, but I'll hear what you got to say."

McCree says. "We're okay with creative solutions to problems, as long as people don't get hurt."

"I had an idea or two about that," you say. "We'll give you the quick rundown and see if you're on board. If not, maybe we can modify it." You look at Junkrat. "All right, tell them your story."

"Well," says Junkrat. "It all started when mummy and daddy--"

"I mean the part about the job."

"Oh! Right, right, of course. The genius plan to infiltrate and destroy Junkertown from within, created by yours truly. I'll tell ya all about it." Junkrat leans forward with a grin. "You folks are gonna love it."
