/qst/ - Quests

>The Intro
Hey y'all. If you couldn't tell, this quest will be taking place in the well known DC Comics universe. Here there be gods and monsters, magicians and aliens, and even a clown or two. But bear in mind that due to various time travel related and or multiversal shenanigans, the DC world is ridiculously complex as a whole. So I'll be running a very streamlined version of it. And to be up front about it, it will likely be shaped by my own likes, dislikes, and biases.
Oh, and aforementioned shenanigans won't be making an appearance.
Mostly.

>The Rules
I will write up the life of our young hero Morgan Barret, a high school student who has just truly begun his career as a superhero in Gotham City as Gray Ghost, you will be given prompts to direct him.
Some things will require a dice roll to determine success or failure or something else entirely. Write In's are absolutely encouraged but I reserve the right to torpedo anything.

The voting period will last 20 minutes after the prompts are given. I will then announce the voting closed and write up the chosen response.

>The Dice
We will be using 1d100 ninety percent of the time here. Best of three. We might use something else when applicable. I'll be running with a loose sort of degrees of success/failure thing here so no real DCs.

Metabrawl. You don't know much about it. But you think you have the cliffnotes on that shit. Metabrawl is a metahuman cage match event ran by a woman simply called Roulette. What we know, is that she's been kidnapping metahumans in various ways, one of them being hiring HIVE to round some up for her. And then forcing them to fight, sometimes to the death, for the entertainment of others. You have to assume rich assholes.

Honestly, who else would pay out the nose to personally watch people with superpowers kill each other? Ted still hasn't come out of his office. He clearly didn't want to talk about Metabrawl. The look he had on his face said that loud and clear, if him walking off and not saying a word for twenty minutes wasn't clear enough. You've been sitting here with Blondie, neither of you saying a word.

She's just kind of chillin, her injuries are probably keeping her in one place. Which is good if she still feels inclined to run off alone. So you might as well start talkin now before she takes off. "What the hell Artemis? Why would you tackle a Titans lead by yourself? Let alone without telling anyone."

She just keeps watching the floor. "How do you know I didn't?"

"C'mon, you didn't mention anyone else and I'm pretty sure any of our teammates would be here if they-."

"Fine." She cuts you off. "Yes. I went alone. Happy now?"

"No I'm not fucking happy, you still coulda ate it today and you won't tell me why you'd do it in the first place!"

"Why does it matter? We know everything we need to know, Roulette is kidnapping metahumans and making them fight so she can make some cash, it's not the first time she's done it." Artemis zips her jacket and stands, although on shaky feet. "They're gonna move their operation again but I was able to get a tracker off on one of her fighters before I ran for it. I'll find them again."

"And then what? Get your ass handed to you again? Artemis, we need to tackle this as a team."

"No, the Titans don't need to cover this one. I can do this, I just need some time... and information."

"So in other words, your just gonna throw yourself at it again." She's got no answer for that, she just continues counting her arrowheads. You've never seen her like this.

>"Artemis, you need to tell me whats got you like this." (Requires Roll)
>"Fine, no Titans. How about some outside help?"
>"What even did this to you? You got stuck between Freeze and Firefly and came out okay."

If you're gonna make a dent, you've gotta know why she's being so damn hardheaded. "Artemis, c'mon. We've been fighting together for almost a year now? And I ain't never seen you this riled up. Whats got you like this?"

She still won't look at you, but she stopped counting arrowheads. So it's a start. "You've gotta promise you won't tell anyone. And I mean you won't tell a soul, Morgan."

"I won't tell anyone a goddamn thing, I swear."

Taking a deep breath, she lets it out. "Someone has been working for Roulette personally, kidnapping metahumans to use in her fights. I've been looking for him ever since we caught this lead. Sportsmaster. He's my dad."

It takes you a moment to gather your thought into a sentence, and when you do, you' realize you probably should've kept your mouth shut. "I- aw shit."

"You're telling me."

You step a little closer, lowering your voice. "So, you're afraid the team would find out. Artemis, I don't think it's that serious-"

"No, you don't understand." She whips around, her ponytail almost smacking you in the face. "Their my friends too, but people like them. Who spent their whole lives in this world. Where you came from matters. If they learn about my dad, that's step one to me being kicked off the team, or worse. Even Dick, he's sweet and and caring, but Batman is his mentor. When he knows, Batman will know. And I don't wanna know what he'd do if he heard about this."

"I think you're being a little paranoid."

"You'd be too if your father was a well known mercenary and a killer with a list of enemies a mile long. I don't wanna ruin what I have with the Titans, or Batman, so that's that." She finishes prepping her arrows and loosely hangs her quiver over shoulder. "So are we doing this or what?"

>"I still think we should call the Titans."
>"Fine, but we still need help to tackle this."

Sunvabitch. It's not like you can say no after she trusted you with that. "Yeah. Yeah, fine. I'm with you."

That puts a smile on her face at least."Good. Now, if were gonna catch up, we're gonna need a couple things."

You hold up a hand, stopping her in her tracks. "Hold on Blondie, I still think we need somehelp to tackle this. And we found this lead as a team so it feels shitty to go off without at least letting the rest of the Titans know."

She crosses her arms, and you brace for an argument but she relents. "Alright, I can live with that. Who were you counting on for outside help though? I don't think we can count on Ted this time."

"Yeah, I actually wanted to ask about that. You see the look on his face when you said Metabrawl? What happened there?"

"He never told me. And he obviously doesn't wanna talk about it."

You can't say that it doesn't bother you. Ted has taught you a lot, and he's told you plenty about his days with the Justice Society. But you guess you don't know him as well as you thought. "Let's just forget about that for now. What I wanna know, Blondie, is why you'd trust me with that info. And not out friends."

She doesn't skip a beat. "Because you've only been doing this for less than a year? Because your parents aren't superheroes? Because you know that people mess up sometimes? Take your pick."

"You're really hard to argue with, you know that?"

She looks entirely too pleased with herself. "Good. So, where are we gonna get our support huh?"

"I think I can help with that." Ted's gravelly voice nearly makes both of you jump as steps from his office. "I ain't going with you, I'm retired. But I'm sure Dinah will come runnin."

Your turn to smirk now. "There you go Blondie, you gonna say no to a helping hand from Black Canary?"

There's a weird atmosphere in the gym as you're getting ready to chase after Roulette. You gave mom an excuse about staying over with Dick's place and going straight to school from there. So here you sit, packing your gear into your school backpack. Somehow managing to feel really bizarre doing it despite having been at this for a little while.

Blondie is sleeping off her injury. Ted said she'll be mission ready by the time Dinah shows up. Ted is still just kind of silently roaming around the gym. You're not even sure what he's doing. Cleaning machines, doing some maintenance here and there. Hell, you saw him filling in some cracks in the old walls earlier. What's going through the old man's head?

You pop a squat on one of the nearby benches as Ted spackles away. "So, got somethin' you wanna share with the class?"

Ted doesn't respond at first, just doing his work quietly. But you know not to rush the old guy. So you wait. fifteen minutes later, the wall looks almost new and Ted smiles at a job well done. For just a moment, you think it's possible that he didn't hear you. You open your mouth to ask again, but he finally speaks. "It's not a secret that I got a bit of a history with Metabrawl."

Coulda fooled you. "You kinda acted like it was."

He just shrugs. "Yeah well. It was a long time ago. And I still don't like talking about it. But if I let you go on there without telling you about my experience then I'd be a real poor teacher." He sits down on the bench across from you and starts unwrapping his hands while he talks. "Some years ago, right before I retired. I fought in Metabrawl."

"Wait, you keepin secrets old man?"

"Hell no, I'm just a regular old human, down to the marrow of my bones. But Roulette thought she could charge extra by promoting fights between a super powered fighter and a normal one. And yeah, it worked. People showed up in droves just to see me get killed. But I won. I won every single fight they put me in."

"So what happened then? Sounds like Roulette was making a ton of cash off you."

"Oh she was, the issue wasn't on her end. I was getting tired, kid. I started fighting in her ring to prove to myself that I still had it. That Wildcat could still hold his own. But I took it too far." His eyes are hard, he's not even looking at you now. More like through you. "I told Roulette, one more fight. And she was fine with that, she already had one more set up for me. And she was set to make so much money off of this fight, no matter who won, that she didn't care if I walked away or had to be carried away."

"So the night of the fight finally comes, and I'm all too ready to put that final notch in my belt. My opponent was a kid, older n' you, but still a kid to me. But he was strong. And sharp. A good fighter. He gave me a run for my money with his powers but he relied too much on em. I found a pattern and poked holes in his defense. Soon, I had em on the ropes. "Ted shakes his head. "But the kid didn't know when to quit. He was tryin' to throw me off, insulting me, eggin' me on. And it worked. It worked too damn well. I saw red. And before I realized it, he was gone."

"You... killed someone in the ring?"

Ted stands, rubbing his rough and scarred knuckles. "Remember, Morgan. The fight is not everything. You fight so that you can go home. So that others can go home. Not to prove yourself. Thinking like that. You'll only get yourself killed. Or worse, someone else."

----
You've been mulling it over in your head for hours, if Robin somehow figures out where your headed your promise to her doesn't mean shit but it doesn't feel right saying nothing. Finally, you hit send on the message telling him you and Artemis are following the Metabrawl lead and leave it at that. You'll be to busy to respond anyways.

When Dinah shows it's nearly morning. The platinum blonde strolls in like she always does. "Alright kids, your rides here. No time for chatting here, we've gotta get a move on if were gonna catch Roulette by surprise."

You and Artemis are already prepared to run out so you just follow her. You all wave to Ted who just nods and goes back to working on a temperamental tread machine. "Alright you two, we've got a lot to discuss on the way there but we've got a few hours so it shouldn't be a problem."

Artemis sputters in disbelief. "A few hours? Where are we going?"

Dinah scans the street before heading for the parking lot. "Your tracking data? It disappeared and landed again in Las Vegas about an hour ago."

No fucking way. "How in the hell did Roulette pull that off?"

"No idea yet but you two are lucky I know a guy with a jet." And there it is. Parked squarely in the middle of the Gym's vacant parking lot. You and Artemis just sort of follow Dinah onto the jet. The outside reminded you of the Batwing but the inside is more like one of those luxury jets you'd only see people with far too much money buying.

Dinah spends a moment locking up and knocks on the door to the cockpit. "And of course, I brought some backup of my own."

A blonde man clad in green answers the knock, grinning as he steps into the room. "Whats that? I'm YOUR backup?"

And to everyone's confusion. You start laughing. "Holy shit! This is the boyfriend you've been talking about! I don't even know why that's funny, but it is! You know she mentions you like every other sentence when she's at the gym?"

That cheesy grin of his gets even wider. "You don't say? You miss me that much, Canary?"

"Don't get too excited now. You done, Morgan?"

You wipe the tiniest tear from the corner of your eye and try not to laugh some more as Artemis stifles a laugh and Dinah gives you a very mom-esque look with her arms crossed. "Yeah, I'm done."

"Good, Morgan. You clearly know him as Green Arrow. But let me introduce you to him as Oliver Queen."

Wait a second, another playboy billionaire? You kidding? Oliver walks over and shakes your hand nice and firm. "Good to meet you kid, heard plenty of good things about you. It'll be nice to have someone that can do what you do along for the ride."

You find yourself a little stunned again. "Thanks. Nice goatee."

The archer just sort of scratches his head. "Uh, thanks? And good to see you again Artemis, you keeping those drills up?"

Your teammate meets him halfway with a hug. "Only everyday. It's good to see you again Ollie."

Ollie? You've gotta move on before your head starts to spin. "Anyways, we gonna talk about our gameplan or what?"

"Yes. Lets." Dinah presses a button on the nearby wall and a screen flips out and begins displaying floor plans and other details for a casino called The Fives Aces. "So the tracking data leads us to this casino. Specifically, under ground level of this casino. Somehow, Roulette has moved her operation here and set up shop again in less than a day. But we'll worry about those details later."

>Continued
>>
>>2219266
She taps a few key points on the screen and they zoom in and display camera feeds from the ground level. There's clearly a a guarded entrance to the underground. And it seems like it might be your only way in. "So far, we've only got one way in or out. So crashing her party won't be simple or easy."

"Me and Ollie have our options narrowed down to three ways. We can go undercover as guests. It's the tactic we used last time but I'd bet she wouldn't expect that again from us. You and Artemis can break in from the guts of the building, using vents and maintenance ways. While we slip in as guests. Then there's Ollie's plan." She says that last bit like she's ashamed to even say it.

GA holds his hands up in defense. "Hey now, I didn't say it was perfect but if it works, we can get a man inside undetected and work on freeing the metahumans she's keeping."

"Don't forget about the most important part of that plan, Ollie. Roulette only wants metahumans. And we only have one on this team." She looks back to you. "We'd be putting all of this on Morgan."

You haven't said a word yet, because your'e still mulling over the plans in your head. Each one requires a degree of subtlety. Going in as guests definitely needs a lot of finese to figure out how to shut down her operation but she'd never see you coming. And creeping around could get you a lot of info but if you're seen even once it could sour the whole thing. And while Oliver's plan is definitely the most direct, it's also the most dangerous, and really only for you.

>"I say we head in as guests, lets ocean's 11 this bitch."

I fucked up a little on that logic while I was writing. What I meant was that Canary can't go in because Roulette would recognize her and treat her differently from the others. Or worse, kill her or something else awful.

Real sorry about that hole. I'll try not to make a mistake like that in the future.
>>
>>2219407
That makes sense.
>>
>>2219378
You shrug. "Oliver's suggestion is gutsy as hell, I like it. Put me in the ring. with me working from the inside, and you guys from the outside. We'll have this wrapped up before tomorrow. "

Dinah isn't convinced. "Are you sure about this Morgan? We don't know what she's doing to force all of these metahumans to fight. She had volunteers last time. This might not be as simple as we're hoping."

"All of the plans have their risks. I mean, with you and Oliver coming she might recognize you anyways so the faster we do this the better right?"

GA seems ready to go though. "See? The kids all in so now we just need a good set up..."

----

This is more than a little surreal, yet again. Here you are, squeezing down a ventilation shaft in a Vegas casino while GA, Canary, and Artemis all move in undercover as guests. As you make progress your monitoring theirs through Oliver's contacts. His tech could rival Bruce's. Which is kinda funny because the two couldn't be any more different from what you can tell.

The trio is all dressed up to keep up appearances, with Artemis going in as Dinah's little sister. You can tell that the guards letting people into the underground don't like it but Oliver leaves them a few extra hundreds to alleviate those worries. When you slip in, you flow out the tight vent in the inner hall that leads underground. Your final stop before the vents cut off. Then you creep along the ceiling, slipping in behind the guards just as they open the doors for them.

You stick to the unwatched corners of the ceiling until another vent presents itself. You flow in and start looking for just about any opening that won't reveal your smoky ass to every spectator in there. Since this place was literally built in a day you'll just have to feel your way around. After a few minutes you find what looks like an empty breakroom.

Okay, so far so good. Now you just need to cause a good enough ruckus. And also get Roulette's attention so they put you with the other metahumans.

>Start by taking out her guards, that'll get noticed quick, and then they can "catch" you.

As soon as you decide on a course of action, a group of several suited gorillas come into the room and start making themselves at home. Taking their jackets off and sitting around around the round table in the room. One even breaks out a deck of cards. and starts dealing once everyone get's comfortable. SO you start to slowly flow out of the vent.

"So whaddya you boys say we do some betting of our own?" A particularly greasy guard slams down some cash on the table.

"I dunno, you know the boss wants us to make an official bet if were gonna put money down." You're on the floor now. Getting close.

The greasy one stands and locks the door to the room. Idiot. "Hey, she don't hafta know. What she don't know, won't hurt her."

You form up behind him and the wispy strands of grey dust coming off you alert his buddies all too late. You have to assume the crooked smile falls from his face as he sees their reactions and slowly turns. All he really catches is a pair of empty eyes and a fist to the face.

The first takes it hard on the chin goes down instantly, you quickly disperse as he hits the floor and the other gorillas finally get their guns outta their holsters and open fire. You simply stand and let their bullets pass through you and probably into the hallway beyond this room. they must shoot dozens of rounds before they realize they ain't making any progress.

Of course, they eventually think. If bullets didn't work, surely my fists will. A couple of them run up to you, fists raised. You turn solid again and duck and dodge out of their sluggish but heavy hits and deliver a couple of your own. But you wouldn't call them sluggish. Two goons. Two punches. And that's all it takes. They fall down at your feet like the first guy and the last three hesitate.

But you won't.

Rushing in, you deliver right hook to a heavyset guard and send him into the table, his bulk crashes through, sending him to dreamland instantly. One of them rushes you from behind but he does it with all the subtlety of a charging elephant. You harden your limbs and meet him half way, grabbing his wait you lift him off the ground and slam him into the last goon. They slam into the nearby wall, cracking it a little.

You take a moment to admire your handiwork, and look up to a corner of the room. Oh, a camera. Well, that would've been gameover any other time. Instead, you wave. And not a moment sooner the door behind you crashes open. About a dozen more armed goons rush in, all much better armed than the several you just destroyed. Not that it'll help them much against you.

Then out steps who must be Roulette. Tall lady, dark hair done up. Wearing one of those red chinese dresses. A,n intricate dragon tattoo runs all the way up her exposed leg and around her neck. And she looks a bit happier to see you than you're comfortable with.

"Roulette. I regret to inform you that your little cage match racket is over." The distortion in you r voice actually makes her guards sweat a little but she just laughs in off.

"I like your spunk, boy." She naps her fingers and two of her goons present her with a large... gun? The weirdest gun you've ever seen. You drop into a ready stance and her guards get even more nervous. "May it serve you well, in the arena." She pulls the trigger.

All you see is a red flash, an instant of some of the most intense pain you've ever felt. Then, nothing.

----

When you come to, you do it slowly. You feel like you just lost a round with Ted. Your eyes slowly focus and you realize without even trying to move that you're restrained. You're standing upright, in some kind of strange pod. It all looks pretty high tech, one look around shows you about two dozen other pods like yours. Most of the metahumans in them are asleep, they're pods lids closed.

And, you can't look down but your still in costume, goggles on, mask up. Guess they don't care about a no-name vigilante's identity, you were sorta counting on that. But there's something else. There's something around your neck. Whatever, you can see it right now so you'll worry about it later. You've gotta play this as smart as possible.

You decide to creep around outside of your bonds to search for anything relevant, an off switch for the pods maybe. But that familiar tingling feeling never comes. Then it hits you. She locked your powers. This is gonna be a little more than you bargained for.

>End of Session

Okay! Thanks for playing guys. I'm sorry again about the mistakes today. I'll try and make sure that doesn't happen again. As always I'll be around for questions. Oh and next session should be this Saturday and the same time.

She may have taken our powers, but you don't need no shifting powers to knock a bitch upside her head.

Thanks for the session Sleepy.

Shit.

Okay Barrett. This isn't as bad as it seems. You may be locked up, with no powers. But you've got people on the outside who know your'e here. So it's your job to do whatever you can from the inside. That was the whole point of this plan. So then, what can you do? Let's start with the obvious. Rapidly blinking a few times ques the hud of your goggles to speak your message aloud, so you whisper.

>Successful so far. Locked up with other metahumans. Here's my current location.

Then things get a little more complicated. Your message and your waypoint fail to send and your hud informs you that you are being jammed. Of fucking course. Why would they let you keep your comms equipment, fucking think Barrett. You close your eyes and lean you head back onto the cold inside of your pod, the incline actually makes lying like this weirdly comfortable.

Let's not focus on what you can't do, and what you don't know. But the opposite. What do you know? Roulette is using some unknown technology to capture metahumans for the fights. Not to mention that she's keeping their powers under lock and key, somehow. It more than likely has plenty to do with whatever the hell is clamped onto your neck.

You also know for sure that she's putting you in the fights, based on what she said before she zapped your ass. SO you're more than likely still under the casino, despite your missing timeframe. On the other hand. You don't know how she's locking metahuman's abilities. From what you know about Roulette she probably bought the tech from someone, she ain't a scientist. Which means you might be able to find a weakness in a all these bonds. Maybe.

You sigh through your mask and hear a couple of moans and groans outside, a quick look shows that only a handful of people in these pods are actually awake. Most of em are alseep or simply unconscious. The unconscious ones look like how you feel, like they went a few rounds with Ted. Okay, time to make a move.

Of course, you've already got a crazy idea, the tiny motor in your grapnel is actually pretty damn strong, and the blunt tip of the hook should be an effective battering ram at close range. So maybe if you just aim it right- a huge clang echoes through your pod like you were the one vibrating and not the metal of your cell.

The noise causes a couple of guards to burst in the room and eye every pod suspiciously until they slowly withdraw. Rifles still raised, but you did get a good look at em. And something stuck out to you, they're weapons were just like whatever Roulette, blood red, clearly advanced. And those guards weren't exactly the goons you deal with on a regular basis.

No, the way they moved in the room shows some real training and muscle memory, and they weren't wearing cheap suits like some wannabe mobsters, real armor and tactical gear. Roulette isn't playing around.

Okay, that didn't work, but now you know the room is well guarded.

Alright. Clearly, the time isn't right. I dunno if I scared people off somehow but were starved for player participation. We'll start again at a later time. I guess.

That’s what happens when you keep delaying the thread/saying “Hey, can’t run today!” several times in a row.

Also this is an old thread on page 9.

Hey, sorry about the short thread and cancelling the session. It taking nearly half an hour just to get three rolls kinda zapped my motivation. But as anon said, delaying so much and the thread being so old didn't help. So if anyone is seeing this. I'll be archiving this and just making a new thread this week.
