Your name is Hoshi Sanada, a 16-year-old Japanese high school student whose most defining trait is their extreme shyness. In fact, your reluctance to involve yourself in everyday social activities had grown to the point where even your parents had become worried about your future. And so, you were sent off to enrol at the Dakugeto Institute of Higher Education. According to your father, it is a highly renowned academy where students are taught life skills alongside academics, and while you don’t have complete faith in your chances, you’re at least willing to give it a shot.

However, what you first expected to be a simple school ended up hiding a revelation that shook your world view at its core, and from there things simply continued to spiral out of your control.

The friends you make will impact your growth throughout this journey, and whether those changes will be beneficial or detrimental will be up to you. Perhaps romance could even flower between you and another, perhaps even multiple romances if the occasion needs be. In the end, it all comes down to you.

So will you stand up to the tasks at hand? Or will you fall and perish to what’s to come?

“Hoshi Sanada… I’ve looked through your records, and I think this Academy is the perfect place to help shape you up into a fine young lady.”

You swallow down an enormous amount of pressure and sit rigidly in your seat. Your first day in this strange, foreign school, in a strange, foreign town, and the first strange, foreign person that you talk to? The counsellor. He’s probably been informed of your history of meekness and the fact that you can barely muster up words in front of others. Maybe he can help you with that, that’s what he just said right? All you were told before you left was that this school would be a fantastic place for you to experience the world and strike out on your own.

‘We hold a very high standard here, but I’m sure with your grades you will have nothing to worry about in terms of academics. If you study regularly you’ll be able to keep up with the coursework without any issues, and your fellow cohort will be here to guide you along every step of the way. I assure you that you’ll be in very safe hands here at the Dakugeto Institute of Higher Education.”

He leans forward and extends his arm, you almost jump at first before you realise what’s happening and return the gesture by shaking his hand.

“By the way, my name is Akihito Naito, and in fact, I believe that I will be your homeroom teacher for the rest of the semester.”

“Um… thank you very much for taking me in. I-I’ll try my best!” You squeak out. Was that too quiet? You’re not sure if he could hear or understand you, but Naito sensei smiles warmly as he stands up from his seat.

“I’m certain that you’ll have a wonderfully pleasant time here Miss Sanada. Now, if you’ll excuse me I have to attend to the other transfer student,” You notice his tone drop a bit as he says, ‘transfer student’. “there’s still a bit of time until classes start, so you’re free to do as you like.”

Before leaving, Naito sensei hands you a map of the school campus. You decide to open it up and see what your options are before classes start. Checking your watch, you note that you have about 30 minutes left before that happens.

So, what do you want to do?

I'll hop in to clear something up for confused anons so the QM doesn't have to go OOC for this.

If you're wondering why other anons are making allusions to things in this thread that you don't understand, this is AU fanfiction (replacing the MC with one of the supporting cast to change genres I assume) of my quest Dark Gate Academy.

I wasn't aware of this at first, but the QM is on my discord, had time to kill, and I guess wanted to practice QMing by starting with a reimagining of an existing quest.

So since this is weirdly quest fanfiction don't expect it to be a long-form thing and know that there'll probably be references to things you don't get, but overall this should be fun. Enjoy, and good luck on not burning everything.

>Go to class early

From past experiences, you know how likely it is that you’d become overwhelmed by all this new information, so it’d probably be best to go to class early and not risk being late on your first day here. Leaving the counsellor’s room, you check the map and proceed to make your way down the hall. Despite being in a relatively rural area, the school itself is rather modern. Slick white walls with industrial grade glass make up your surroundings, and you can’t help but notice how clean the floors are as you continue walking. Following the map up to the second floor, you begin searching for 2-A.

Each classroom has its room number out by its door, so you quickly find your class and make your way in.

It’s still early so the class is relatively empty, but the few students that populate the room turn their heads and stare at you the moment that you walk in. Your gaze instantly falls to the ground as you make your way towards a nearby seat, and promptly stare down at your feet in nervousness the moment you sit down.

“Hey.” A voice shoots out behind and you nearly leap out of the seat in surprise. You slowly turn your head to face the speaker and instantly note the look of disdain on their face.

“You’re in my seat.” The black-haired boy states, pointing at the chair in a sign of ownership. This time you really do leap out of your seat and fumble backwards.

“I-I’m so sorry!” You stammer out your words and feel your face grow red as the boy moves in to replace where you had just previously sat.

“You’re one of the new transfer students, aren’t you?” He states, looking up at you in the eyes. You divert your gaze and decide on staring down at the ground instead.

“I’ll take your silence as a yes. Well around here there’s a certain seating order here and you can’t just go around placing your ass wherever you want.” His tone is cold and cuts into you, you try to stammer out another apology but instead you make a ‘fueee’ sound and let tears well up in your eyes.

“Reiji! How dare you let this precious girl cry out on her first day here!” Another voice resounds throughout the room and booming footsteps comes rushing your way. This time, a white-haired girl approaches you and brings your head down into her chest. She pats your head and “there-there”’s you, you’re not really sure what to do in this scenario but you can at least fell your tears start to die down.

“What did I do? She was in my seat!” The boy, Reiji apparently, retorts.

“So? She’s new! If you’re really a gentleman, then you would have gladly given her your spot.” By now most of other students have put their conversations on pause and instead opt to watch in on the scene.

“I don’t care about being a gentleman! And I worked hard for this seat! I’m not just going to give it up to some new kid out of nowhere. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to catch up on the studying that I lost due to this petty argument.” With that Reiji turns his head towards his book and continues reading, leaving you and the girl to your own devices.

“Hmph! The nerve of some people.” The girl states, sticking out her tongue in Reiji’s direction and leading you by the hand towards the corner of the room. “Well don’t you worry darling, I’ll make sure that nobody hurts you.”

“T-thank you.” Your words are obscured by your sniffing, but the girl smiles and brings you in for another hug.

“I s-shouldn’t have been in his seat though…” You mutter.

“Nonsense! It’s your first day! You could sit wherever you please! Now, how are you feeling?”

“A bit better, thank you.” You sniffle, your tears are starting to die down and you can feel your heart steadily return to a calmer rhythm.

“Well that fantastic! If Reiji ever bothers you again just come running to me for help,” the girl brings you in for another hug “I’m Chihiro by the way, Chihiro Toriyama.”

>Apologise for crying
You try to sniff back the tears. “I-I’m sorry for crying… I just got so nervous and then, and then.”
You feel Chihiro pull you in for a hug, and continue sniffling away. Quickly pulling away, Chihiro takes out a handkerchief and hands it to you.
“Aw, well you’re very welcome. But don’t let it get you down, it was just bad luck that you met the grouchiest person here is all.” Chihiro states, matter-of-factly. “Most of the students of class 2 are fine gentlemen and ladies, it’s just those few like Reiji that you have to look out for.”

“Who… who are they?” You ask, wiping your face.

“Well let me see,” Chihiro places her hand on her chin knowingly. “Aside from Reiji, who just hates fun, there are a few others. The ones you should stay well away from are Rini and Kosuke. They’re delinquents you see, I heard that they even beat up people on the street for their money.” This elicits a short yelp from you.

“Doesn’t the school do anything about them?” The thought of delinquents almost brings you back into tears, but you try and force them back with the handkerchief.

“That’s the scary thing about it all, I heard that Kosuke’s parents are super rich. So he can go and do whatever he pleases and they’ll just pay the officials to stay silent!” You’re starting to regret transferring over to Dakugeto Institute.

With that the school bell rings and more and more students begin to flood into the room. Chihiro leads you to an empty seat as you all begin to wait for Naito sensei to enter… And you all continue waiting. Murmurs of confusion starts up but is cut short by the slam of the door. Naito sensei passes on through with two students tailing behind. Both of them look scuffed up and the whispers are revived almost immediately.

“Saki in trouble? This must be a dream.”

“And late to class? Maybe that kid’s her new boyfriend…’

Naito sensei slams his fist on the desk, quieting the class, as the female student hangs her head low and slinks to her hair in the front of the room.

‘Enough! Now I’d like to introduce you all to our new Transfer Students.” Naito sensei looks at you as he says this and motions for you to walk towards the front. Chihiro tells you to break a leg as you leave your chair. The gaze of the 20 or so students in the room burrows into the back of your head as you approach Naito sensei. You just stare at the ground.

“The first transfer student is Ryoji Shida, and I think he’s very eager to make friends. Now Ryoji, do you think you can respectfully say a few words about yourself to your class?”

“Yo. I’m Ryoji.” He says nonchalantly, slinging his bag over his shoulder.

“Aaaaaaaaaaand…?” A girl in the front row drags out.

“What, you want more? Okay… uh, this is my fifth school in two years… my favourite colour is green, and… can I sit down now? This is a real drag, teach.”

Naito sensei nods and Ryoji begins to make his way to the back of the room.

“And this is our second transfer student: Hoshi Sanada. Would you care to introduce yourself to the class?”

Oh no, everyone is definitely looking at you now.

“Um… well hello everyone my name is Hoshi Sanada. Oh! You all already knew that, well um I’m 16 years old, my family owns their own business, I enjoy knitting and have a bunch of plushies in my room… Mr Cuddles is my favourite, he’s the first one that I ever made and he’s always been there for me when I feel down. I made him using amigurumi and he’s got a few holes in him from over the years, oh amigurumi is a method of knitting small animals, but you could tell that from just the name. Wait no I should be talking about myself, uh, well you can all see that I’m terribly shy except when I’m rambling, oh no I’m rambling right now aren’t I? Naito sensei is it really okay for me to talk this long? Um I guess I’ll just end with hoping that we can all get along and that the delinquents don’t bully me… Ah! I shouldn’t have said that oh nooo.” Your face is almost beet red as you run back to your seat. Chihiro congratulates you on your effort while you hear a few of your classmates snickering in the background.

The early morning classes go on by without much else of note occurring, but the moment that the lunch bell rings, your desk becomes swarmed by the other classmates. They bombard you with question left and right, you can barely make out the sentences asking for your old highschool, reasons for transferring and… three sizes? The majority of your cohort’s words are churned into a deafening cacophony of noises as you steadily feel yourself reclining deeper and deeper into your chair.

“There there! That’s enough out of all of you, don’t you all see what you’re doing to this poor sweetheart?” A single familiar voice pierces through the crowd and you swing your head to see Chihiro at the door, having returned from somewhere else. She pushes herself through the crowd and quickly grabs onto your hand, pulling you out of your chair and guiding you out of the classroom to the disappointment of your fellow students. She lets go of your hand once you make it out of the class and simply tells you to follow her.

The two of you make your way up to the roof of the school building, and it is there that you realise just how large the entire campus is. Majority of the landscape is taken up by the various faculties and the only thing you can see in its entirety is the blue sky overhead.

“Phew, now isn’t that much better?” Chihiro asks with a smile.

“T-thank you very much… I’m not really a great public speaker… or a speaker in general…” You admit, your gaze steadily returning to the ground. Chihiro simply chuckles.

“That’s very much alright my dear! I could tell just how troubled you were, surrounded by all of them. Why, I’d probably do the same in your position! But you should have seen the look on their faces when you talked about the delinquents! I swear I could have seen a vein pop in one of their foreheads.” Chihiro falls into a fit of laughter at the memory and takes a few seconds to calm herself down, rubbing her eyes and removing any leftover tears.

“Oh… I’m sorry it’s just that when I get nervous I ramble and then I just say whatever’s on my mind, I can’t really control it all that well…” It’s true, rambling has always been an issue throughout your life. It’s as if you only have two modes of talking: either you mumble or you go on and on. “So… what do we do now?” You ask.

“Why, we could do whatever we pleased darling Hoshi! We could relax, we could eat some lunch, or we could simply talk and get to know each other!” Chihiro replies with another smile.

“I guess that it’d be nice to talk… oh no! I left my lunch back in the room!” The realisation hits you like a bus and is further driven home by the low growl from your stomach. Chihiro laughs again and takes out a piece of plastic wrapped bread from her pocket and throws it over at you. You fumble with it in the air for a couple of moments before firmly securing it in your grasp, sighing in relief as you do.

“It’s nothing special, but I hope that cafeteria bread can keep you satisfied until the end of school.’ Chihiro takes out another piece of bread and begins to munch down on it. “So what do you want to talk about? I’m very pleased to say that I am well acquaintanced with many of the students in this fine institute.”

>Ask about the school
>Ask about Chihiro

“So… what kind of place is Dakugeto? My parents just told me that it was a good school… but you told me that there were d-delinquents here.” You ask, nibbling at your piece of bread.

Chihiro furrows her brow for a bit before replying. “Honestly I’m not too sure of that myself.” She shrugs. “I myself was told by my father that it was a fairly prestigious school, so I’m just as shocked as you are regarding the students. But like I told you, I heard that Kosuke’s parents are super rich. But why am I talking about the negatives? You should hear about the positives of our school instead!”

“W-what are they?” You ask, tilting your head to the side.

“Why Hoshi my dear, there’s simply so much to experience! It took me ages before I was able to go through the entire list, but for you I’ll let you in on the best things… Did you know that we have a hot springs of our own? It’s right next to the dorms and it is just fantastic! I should bring you in there some other time with the others, I know you’ll just love it.” You recall the brochure that you received before enrolling, bringing up the sheer shock that you had when you found out about all of the facilities that the school contained.

“Um, also… if it’s not too much to ask I’d like to know about you.” You state, although you’re extremely nervous in asking this and worry whether you’re crossing any boundaries.

“Me? Well I just love getting to know people. There’s something to be had in just sitting down, having a cup of tea and talking to someone well into the afternoon, wouldn’t you say? Oh speaking of which I brought my thermos with me, would you care for a cup?” Chihiro sits down on the roof and begins to set up an impromptu tea party for the two of you. You oblige and make your way towards her. “I do recall you telling us about your love for knitting Hoshi, do you have any pictures, I just adore the sight of adorable plushies.”

“Oh! Yeah, of course!” You quickly rush to take your phone out of your pocket, but instead awkwardly fumble with the zip. Once you manage to free your device you scroll through your photos, making sure to find images of Mr Cuddles. Knitting is probably the only topic that you can freely talk about where you don’t suffer from your shyness, instead it’s one where you ramble on and on. “Here’s Mr Cuddles, I was talking about him in my class introduction… He’s a very old plushie so I’ve improved a lot since then, but I really do love him lots and lots.”

Chihiro stares at your phone in adoration, you can almost see a sparkle in her eye. You quickly change the pictures to your newer creations and Chihiro takes it all in with glee. “Wah! That’s so adorable! I wish I could just cuddle up with them alllllll. You simply must show me to your room one day!” She squeals in delight, you can almost begin to feel your nervousness ease away.

“You know… it’s actually been quite a while since I’ve managed to talk to someone like this.” You confess, staring down at the floor. “Usually people would stay away from me when they realise how nervous I am…”

“Is that true? Well the people in your old school must have been terrible, I say. You’ve been nothing but a charm to talk to.” Chihiro replies. Tears begin to swell up in your eyes again, but you wipe them away and a sip from your tea cup. Wow, this tea is delicious! You have to restrain yourself from finishing it all too quickly and place the cup down. “You know what I do when I’m feeling down good Hoshi? It’s a secret remedy that I’ve discovered.”

“W-what is it?” You probably sound a bit too excited at the prospect of learning a secret.

“Why, I just scream out at the world!” Huh? “You see Hoshi, whenever I feel down or scared, I just yell out whatever I want and I’ll instantly become happier! Try it yourself, you’ll see that it works!”

>Try to scream
>Squeak
The mere thought of screaming feels like it raises your heartbeat, its rare enough as it is for you to raise your voice above a whisper, to shout would be to completely smash your past self… and yet you still want to try. You came to this school to try and change, and you suppose this is the real first step. Gulping down another bit of tea for courage, you take one deep breath. And then another, and one more after that. You can definitely feel your heart beating against your chest now. It’s okay, you can do this. Chihiro believes in you, you’ll count yourself down and let it all out in a single moment.

“3…”

“2…”

“1…”

“…”

Nothing comes out. Your heart is still racing as you continue to try to scream, but air is simply exiting your mouth soundlessly. Your entire body is shaking, trying to produce something resembling a scream.

“…………………………..squeak” The first sound you make, the culmination of all your efforts… is a squeak. Your face almost immediately goes beet red and you almost crumple into a ball on the ground. Chihiro must be laughing at you right now, after all that’s what they all did. They all laughed at your efforts.

However, a reassuring hand on your shoulders quickly dispels those thoughts. Instead of mocking you, Chihiro simply smiles and brings you in for another hug. You feel tears start to swell up again.

“You tried your best Hoshi, that’s all that matters. Now, how do you feel?” You’re starting to sniffle now.

“I-I feel disappointed in myself…” You admit, hiccups are starting to make their way up your throat.

“Don’t be, you’ll get there eventually, I know that you will.” Chihiro gently pats your hair and you finally let it all burst out.

By the time you’re done the lunch bell rings and you return to your class with Chihiro. You honestly feel a bit worse than you felt entering the room, but a little courage exists from within. The hope that Chihiro gave you lies firmly within your stomach, and although you’re still as nervous as you were coming in you feel as if some progress has been made, however infinitesimal.

Classes go by and eventually the bell rings for the end of the day. Naito sensei assigns a student to walk you to your dorms, Saki Kobashi, who is apparently also your dorm mate. She seems preoccupied by her thoughts as she guides you so you don’t say anything and trail behind her the entire way. She has a scowl on her face and you don’t want to get on another person’s bad side on your first day.

Once you arrive at your room, you begin unpacking and putting away all your clothes as Saki sits at her desk. She’s biting her thumb and staring angrily at the table. Looking around the room you notice that everything is immaculately organised. All of Saki’s belongings are ordered in some kind of way, whether by colour, size or alphabet.

>Pack away your things in silence
If you’re going to be a bit honest with yourself, you’re a bit scared of Saki right now. You’re not sure what happened to her throughout the day but you don’t want to be in her way when she’s in that mood. So you instead opt to continue unpacking your bags in silence. First you take out your clothes and put them in the wardrobe, then your plushies who are placed in order of friendship on your bed, and finally your good luck charm is taken out of your pocket… but your pocket is empty. Just to make sure, you flip your pocket inside out, only for nothing to appear from within.

You make your way back over to your bags, only to find them all empty as well. Your parents had bought you that charm for your enrolment into Dakugeto, you can’t have lost it after just one day! Your heart beat intensifies from within and you go over everything once more. The wardrobe simple has your clothes hung up, your bed is only occupied by your plushies, sheets and blanket and the desk Saki is sitting over is completely devoid of objects. You check everything once more to be sure before the harrowing thought enters your mind.

You’ve lost your good luck charm.

Your mind flashes through your memories of the day, recalling every last detail as you try to find out where your charm went. You definitely had it in your pocket when you entered the school and went to Naito sensei, so its certainly somewhere within the school grounds. Then that means you lost it somewhere after that. You rush out of your room, Saki doesn’t take notice and is still scowling to herself, and head back to the school building. You make your way back to where it all began: the counsellor’s room. You run past the empty halls and directly to where your day all began, the door is unlocked and you enter, scanning for the small charm.

It’s not where you sat, nor under the desk, nor on the window sill, nor by the bookshelf, nor behind the clock, nor in the plant pot, nor in the cabinet, nor in the folders…

“Miss Sanada what on Earth do you think you’re doing!?” A loud, booming voice snaps you out of your trance and returns you to the real world. You turn around to face Naito sensei, whose face is a mixture between shock and fury. At first you wonder why, and then you take a notice of your surroundings. The furniture has been flipped over, dirt form the plant pot litters the floor and files are thrown around haphazardly.

You…

>E-Explain that you lost your c-charmmmmaaaaawwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh

Naito sensei takes a step towards you, and you try to explain your case but all that comes out of your mouth are a series of “ums” and “ahs”.

“When you first entered my office, I didn’t expect for you to do something like this Miss Sanada.” His voice is calm, but you can see that his face is practically fuming now. But the sounds of his footsteps are covered up by the deafening beats of your heart.
“S-sensei… I l-lost… I lost my ch-ch-cha-chawaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh” For the second time in the day you burst out into tears and fall to your knees. You try to rub away the tears but more flow out to replace the ones you wipe away. Naito sensei nearly freezes on the spot. He’s clearly confused as to what happened, after all, a highschool student just tore up his room and began crying right afterwards…

“Did… did you get set up by someone else Hoshi? You can trust me.” His voice takes on a much more soothing tone now, and he kneels down in front of you, trying to look at your eyes.

“N-n-noooooo… I did this all N-naito Senseiiiiii… I… I lost my charmmmmmmmmmmmm” Your tears come flooding back at the thought of your lost charm, at the thought that you may never find it again.

However, your crying is suddenly cut short by a sudden screech, followed by an even louder scream.

“What the… come with me Hoshi, we’ll sort out your issue after we figure out what’s going on.” Naito sensei guides you to your feet and you both slowly make your way to the source of the sound. You’re still trying to sniff back the tears. Making your way through the halls, you eventually arrive back at your homeroom, where everything has become a complete mess; the tables are all thrown across to one side and makes a pile that that’s up to the ceiling and the room is covered in a series of deep cuts. But what occupies your attention isn’t the state of the room, it’s not the cracked windows and shards of glass scattered around, instead, your focus is fixated on the two figures in the centre of the classroom.

A boy is standing over a girl, both hands clenched tightly around her neck.

Naito sensei immediately kicks into action, rushing over to the two and calling out. “What are you doing? Get away from her right this instant!” But is instead met with an incapacitating blow, knocked out cold instantly and thrown over towards the pile of chairs and desks. With that the boy looks over to you… and his face begins to shift, contort in unnatural ways.

“Shit! Why?! God damn it why are you already here?” He roars in a foreign voice. Although it comes out as a series of unintelligible garbles, you can almost instinctively understand him. But you’re not given any time to appreciate this new found language as the boy drops the girl and begins making his way towards you. You try to run away but find your legs paralysed in fear, unable to do anything as he breaks into a sprint in your direction.

At the last moment a figure rushes out from behind and tackles the boy back towards the other end of the room. The boy crashes into the pile of desks with a loud clattering.

”AND SHE’S BROUGHT ONE OF THE THREE!? THIS IS BULLSHIT!” The boy seems to scream out at no one in particular. ”No! I refuse to die here! 1000 years! Can you even understand what time of time frame that is?!” He continues his rant, this time clearly focused on your saviour.

“Hey, are you going to cry again or are you going to make yourself useful?” Your saviour states, who upon closer inspection you recognise as Reiji. “I’m going to distract him so go get Akihito sensei and Maya out of here.” You’re going to assume that the girl’s name is Maya, and with that Reiji rushes forwards, engaging the boy in combat. You guess you really don’t have the choice to run away. Things are happening too quickly, why are you in this situation?

>Go save Naito sensei first
Your legs still refuse to move, even as you watch Reiji and the boy throw each other around the room. Even if they’re no longer frozen, they still shake uncontrollably from both your previous events. Both the destruction of the counsellor’s room and the destruction of your homeroom leaves you feeling as if everything is surreal, that like is all a dream. But the sights in front of you don’t lie and you quickly force your legs to move…

You take one step, and then one deep breath. Oh no you’re getting nervous right now. That isn’t good, you can’t be nervous in a situation like this. Your breaths become quicker and you think that you’re hyperventilating, but you keep taking single steps, just one after the other… Your legs finally stop shaking after a while and you quickly make your way to Naito sensei, he’s bleeding all over but he’s still breathing. You quickly sigh out in relief and pull him arm over your shoulder… He’s heavy. You really should have expected this since he’s an adult but you really didn’t expect for it to be this difficult to carry someone. Reiji seems to have brought the boy into the other side of the room as you slowly carry… drag Naito sensei out of the room. It takes all of your force to bring him out, he doesn’t look too badly injured but you’re not a doctor... at least he’s out of the room?

You run back into the room for Maya when you see Reiji get thrown over to your side. He luckily lands on his feet but pauses when he sees the boy.
”Fucking hell this host sucks. Fine, you know what? I’ll kill you all in my real form!” The boy shouts, and reality seems to… shatter? Like a broken glass pane the world in front of you falls apart into darkness. When reality seems to boot itself back up, the first thing that you notice is that you are no longer within the ruined classroom. Instead, you find yourself in a strange, black and white world. High pillars stretch into what seems like nothingness and your only source of light comes from floating stars. Everything in this monochrome world screams out to you as being somehow wrong, but you’re not given much more time to think about it.

Reiji immediately rushes over to you and grabs your hand. He pulls you along as he rushes through the pillars, scowling all the way.

>Ask what is happening

“W-what’s going on?” You can barely make out words as you run along, instead most of your energy is spent trying to keep up with Reiji. You’re not in any way, shape or form athletic and running for an extended period of time quickly becomes a massive challenge for you. It’s not until you’ve run for a few seconds, (or has it been minutes? You can’t get a sense of time in this location at all) that you two finally stop to rest. Your current surroundings don’t appear to be any different from the location that you started in, the pillars are all still arranged in the same manner and the stars in the sky are still in their same location.

“I’m going to be quick so just listen to me. Right now we’re in the Darkworld facing off against an Archdemon. Don’t ask me what these terms mean just know what they are. Don’t ask me any more questions until we’re done and for the love of all that is holy do not stray away from me.” You’re too busy trying to collect your breath to reply but you nod at him to show that you understand.

“He’s coming now so hide behind a pillar until I tell you to come out. Just trust your instincts when you do, you’ll know what to do.” With that, a loud crash reverberates throughout the space. Pillars fall and crash into one another as a strange beast comes charging at the two of you. Reiji pushes you aside towards a nearby pillar and stands to clash with the monster head on. It roars at him and tries to crush him with its… hooves? You instinctively shut your eyes and world begins to spin as you try to make sense of what’s happening, an Archdemon is coming after you? Why? What have you ever done to anyone that would want them to attack you for? Various battle sounds occur behind you and the sound of crashing pillars makes you shrink deeper and deeper into yourself.

Your heart is beating so quickly that you almost don’t hear Reiji call out your name. Swallowing down another gulp of pressure, you jump out from your hiding spot and search for where he is. You simply follow the trail of broken pillars until you come across Reiji, who has the archdemon wrapped up in white chains… His face is cut and a deep gash of red stains his uniform, you move towards him but he shouts at you to go towards the archdemon instead.

>Reach out to the demon

The demon doesn’t move. Even though it has been fettered by chains it doesn’t make any attempt to struggle as you walk towards it. Almost in resignation of its fate it droops its head down for you to reach out. Your hand trembles as your body continues to move without your conscious efforts. As if through instinct, your hand touches the demon’s head, and a strange white light fills your surroundings. By the time the light ends you find yourself back in the ruined classroom. Maya is still lying across from you but Reiji doesn’t seem to be conscious. This time, your legs fail you completely and you fall to the ground, crying and trying to expel the shock of the events from your mind. You’re not sure how long you continue sobbing, shutting out the rest of the world, but when your finally regain your senses you find yourself in a bed. You raise yourself up and look around, a pink curtain separates you from the rest of the room..

“Ah, you’re finally awake?” A voice calls from behind the curtains and a figure walks by.

“A-am I back in the real world?” You ask, although your voice is hoarse from all the crying.

“Yes, you defeated Aries. Congratulations by the way.” The figure hands you a glass of water through the curtains and you quickly chug it down, placing the empty cup on the stand next to your bed.

“W-what was all that?” The water helped, but your words still come out like a croak and thousands of tiny pins scratch at your throat as you speak.

“That, well, that was your first battle I’m afraid.” The figure remains behind the curtain but you can somewhat make out the shape of a male. “I have both good news and bad news for you, Hoshi Sanada. Which would you like to hear first?”

“U-um, well the good news first then.” You reply. You notice that your eyes are also extra sore from all the rubbing you’ve been doing.

“Well, the good news is that I found your good luck charm. You really shouldn’t lose track of such an important item you know? The figure’s hand moves past the curtain once more and places the charm at the foot of your bed, you can’t reach out to snatch it soon enough. The figure waits for your series of thank-you’s to end before continuing.

“Now, the bad news is that there are still 11 more archdemons out there. In a way, you were lucky that Aries rushed the process and turned out far weaker than he would have been otherwise.” What. One battle left three people unconscious and one person a slobbering mess, and that wasn’t even it’s full power? Fear grasps at your body once again and you tighten your grip on your good luck charm.

“…Well I wish you all the luck in your struggle Hoshi Sanada. It was a pleasure meeting you.” The figure begins to leave his seat before you call out to him.

“Wait! Why me? W-why do I have to do all of this? Why can’t the p-police do anything to stop it?” You cry out, almost in desperation for some sort of person to turn to. Instead of safety, instead of the promise of protection, the figure simply states.

“Because, Hoshi Sanada, you are the Star.” And leaves the room.
