"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

7th Kriegstrom Platoon
Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

The Fallen
The annals record those who have died in the line of duty under your command. Those whom you have failed.

‘Auntie’ Goodkind. Throat ripped out by a Grenn wolfman during the storming of Kresden.

Pietre Verdun. Struck down from behind in the storming of Kresden. No one saw where the blow came from.

Unhappy Sam. Mauled to death by the Grenn during the storming of Kresden.

‘Snake’. Summarily executed for disobeying orders. Members of 7th Platoon refused to elaborate further.

‘White Bitch’ Tara. Slain in the defence of the 7th Platoon campsite by Neumunster ambushers during the Northern Offensive.

Twice-in-One-Day. Skewered by Neumunster swordsmen during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

’Kid’ Hewn in twain by a Neumunster halberdier during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

Regrets-the-Rain Struck down by a holy weapon of the Chevalisse Paladin orders on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Arlen Rivers. Thrown from the walls by a Chevalisse Paladin on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Vendis Durvano Trampled to death in the mad rush to escape the Western Gate slaughter on Day Four of the Siege of Kresden.

Legless Jenny Consumed body and soul in an abominable Cultist experiment, binding her to a corrupted Albani Warmachine.

Recap

It all comes down to this. Or several days of 'this'. Every choice you’ve made, every success and every failure. It’s all led to you and the Company fighting to stave off the marshalled strength of the entire Free Alliance from the walls of some northern town while you wait for your dread employer, The Necromancer to relieve you with his fell host. Maybe you fekked up somewhere along the line, but for the life of you its impossible to figure out exactly where.

You lost men, brothers. Some you didn’t know too well, it’s the harsh reality of your position as an Officer. A battle is one thing, hours of movement and running around followed by minutes of terror and screaming. One way or another, it's all over soon enough most of the time. Humans weren't meant for sieges, days and days on end of the same pants-shitting terror knowing it will happen all over again tomorrow, if they live that long.

You thrive in this hell, you and people like Bad Hand. You feel better now than you did before the siege started. But your lads... they're only human, you wonder how many will survive this. If any of them will. The butcher's bill grows steeper every day and you still don't know your esteemed employer will bother to keep you among the living. This is a tough time for the Company, the most desperate of measures are being taken to last out another day. Last night you killed a insubordinate officer who defied your Captain, and you still don't know if you did the right thing.

Perhaps half the Company now wouldn’t mourn your death, and those in the 4th Infantry would gladly give you that final, fatal nudge over a line you’ve been dancing on for years. But everything you have done, it's all been for the Black Company… hasn't it? Has it instead all been for Captain Kiranova? You’ve begun to wonder whether you would do anything asked of you by the cold-hearted queen of ice you love so dearly, even against the interests of the Company.

Or maybe none of the above is true. Perhaps you’ve always liked killing, and any moral hand-wringing done after the fact has been to assuage your own dark inclinations. You’re not just an officer, a cynic, a tired veteran of fighting for coin. You are a monster. But perhaps a monster is what the Black Company needs right now.

You have not shirked from any advantage to secure victory, to ensure that the Company survives. Black deeds, dark bargains, harsh choices. Your power quickens. That you will give in to the darkness has long been decided, all that's left to see is how much of Prince will remain once the bloody day is done.

The time of Prince's quickening has come. He has forsaken his soul and rejected the Law of the Gods and Man.

Several weeks before the Siege of Kresden, Neumunster Countryside, Trooper ‘Kid’

After being viciously assaulted by the overly hygienic Auntie ‘Goodkind’ you find yourself chagrined to be walking about the Black Company encampment wearing little more than some sandals and billowing white hosen that are far too large for you. Fortunately no one seems to care, it’s Saint Mattens Day and most soldiers are too busy getting drunk, high or in debt while at the same time also avoiding hard work like sentry duty or patrolling.
This mutual understanding, Troopers don’t get combat-ineffective fekked up and Officers don’t conscript anyone for anything but the most crucial of tasks, allows you to walk through the camp in your current state of undress relatively unmolested.

The growling voice of Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ Hadrien stops you in your tracks. You understand that the Sergeant is an old friend of your Lieutenant ‘Prince’. He’s as mad as a loon obviously, chomping at the bit when sane Troopers would be cutting their losses and fighting another day. But he doesn’t take shit from anyone, which the adolescent in you admires beyond a reasonable degree. You don’t understand what he’s saying, but a senior NCO’s voice can quickly turn into unpleasant chores for a young Trooper like yourself.

”Fekking bitch.” The pavilion sized storage tent ruffles slightly. ”Do you have to bite so damn hard?”

”Heehee, I didn’t hear my favourite ape complain about it last time.” You get a chill down your spine, that voice sounds familiar. You recall LT ‘Prince’ staring down that crazy cultists lady back in the Palace…

”Yeah well, mouth was full at the time wasn’t it? Come here…”

”Come here, slut.” Your heart leaps into your throat as the insanely brave but very mortal Sergeant calls one of the most powerful sorceresses on the continent a slut. There is complete silence from the tent for a few moments other than a low hum and ominous red glow. The last time you saw that red glow the capital of the mighty Neumunster Empire turned into hell from Below for a night.

”Ugh, nice try you crazy bitch. What are you gonna do, magik me? You know you like it.”

”Say it again!” The ominous red glow does not dissipate, but the hum does change tone. You don’t want to imagine what it looks like in there right now.

”Yeah slut, that’s what I want to hear.”

”Yeah, grab that and then… Ooo, say something really fekking weird!”/i]

”I-what? Ow, not so hard!”

”Say something fekked up RIGHT FEKKING NOW!”

”I sometimes wonder how a threesome with a Wildborn would work!”

”OHMIFEK YEEEEeeessss” Superior Syka’s screams die off, to the great relief of everyone within a dozen metres of the tent.

You hear the Sergeant growl one more time. ”…Again?”

You, and the half-dozen other Troopers and Supply orderlies who happen to be within earshot of the tent, find a good reason to be somewhere else.

You flee the crime scene like a guilty suspect. But if anything you were the victim here.
As you enter the storehouse that has become the unofficial HQ of the ‘Saint and the Sinners’ band LCPL ‘Murder’ Meriam spares you a glance in the middle of tuning her instrument. It looks like an Albani dwarf’s idea of a lyre, with far more strings and…plugs? Where do they run to? Why does a musical instrument require plugs?
”Seven silly saints slaughter sixteen sacrilegious Saracens…” Subaltern Saint, LT Prince’s unofficial apprentice, is busy practicing her vocalizations in the corner. You wonder, if you got your voice back, would it ever sound as sweet as hers? Probably not.
”Ah, the piccolo soldato finally graces us with his presence.” The tanned Sabari goddess you couldn’t take your eyes of earlier by the river looks all the more imposing in her full regalia and feathered cap. Her words are harsh but her friendly smile takes the sting away. She offers her hand to you. ”My friends call you Spicario, and you are carina enough for me to include you in that number. I am a new member of this band. In Sabari every campsite was full of song and music.”
‘Spitfire’ Spicario must have come straight from her wrestle with CPL Schuster, her unarmoured buttoned shirt is wet and sticks to her skin. It’s white and virtually transparent at this point. Even though girls are gross, obviously, it takes a moment for you take tear your eyes away as you shake hands.

”Maybe all that singing i why we ambushed your fellow countrymen so many time.” LCPL ‘Murder’ Meriam looks up and you and grins. Her grin is a lot less warm and friendly than the Sabari lady's. That said, it’s probably nothing against you in particular. Apparently she is this gloomy with everyone. ”Back from daydreaming pipsqueak? I wouldn’t waste your time with the ‘Kid’, Spicario. He’s alright on the drums but can’t hold his drink and is terrible at cards.”

”Drink? Cards?” Spicario frowns. ”How good go you expect a 10 year old to be?”

Pissing off a junior-NCO is never a smart idea. But this is band practice, not the parade ground. There’s an odd immunity granted here to the casual banter and mucking around that normally wouldn’t be permitted between different ranks, or at least not to the point where they might take it out on you afterwards by abusing their position.

At least you hope so.

‘Murder’ rarely looks anything except gloomy. It brings you some satisfaction to see her eyebrows rise at your gesture, straight from ‘Whisper’ Smythe, and then narrow angrily as you complete the gesticulation. ‘Spitfire’ covers her mouth with a surprisingly girlish giggle as ‘Murder’ leaps up and takes a step towards you.

Whatever ‘Murder’ was about to say or do, which might have ended in a modest display of violence, is interrupted as Saint pauses in her vocalizations and turns around.

”Kid, you’re here!” Saint stands up and gives you a warm hug, pressing your head against her midriff. Or just slightly above her midriff. ”Did Prince give you the day off? Poor man does too much work.”

You nod absentmindedly, lost in the comfiness of the embrace. It reminds you of a better, warmer time. A cottage on a farm with golden fields. Before the orphanage, before the war. Something almost like home.

”How are you, you little scallywag?” You pretend you didn't hear her, still unwilling to finish the hug just yet.

”Scallywag?! Did you see what he just… bah, nevermind.” ‘Murder’ Meriam grunts, she isn’t outraged but she is clearly annoyed that you have found a safe haven from retaliation so quickly.

”…well, this place isn’t the healthiest environment for a child to grow up. I mean, look at Bad Hand. No offence to the Sergeant.” Saint adds shamefacedly, breaking off the hug. She ruffles your hair affectionately. ”Still, I think Kid could one day grow up to be the best of us.”

Day Four of the Siege of Kresden, BELOW, Lieutenant Prince

”….I think Kid could one day grow up to be the best of us.”

”Where were you?” Your words seem to echo in the darkness.

The…thing before you is so vast your mind doesn’t really register it. Similar to how you don’t really understand how large a mighty mountain is, even when you’re climbing it.
It is at once so far away and so close that you struggle to comprehend the distances involved. Your eyes simply can’t see that far into the gloom. The only sound in the darkness is the clink of chains, each link larger than your dragon Asgorga, and the chittering the Dark Father’s daemon wardens. That, and your own voice. Weak and frail at first, then thunderous.

”When my men died, where were you?”

Flashes of all those you have saved with the powers of Below shoot past your eyes. Trooper Nissar, his mortal blow turned into a scratch, Trooper ‘Smiles’ You understand that they are not your own thoughts. But so many more died, you haven’t made it this far because of the Dark Father. You and your men have made it this far because you’re the meanest sons-of-bitches in the world, not pets of a fallen divinity. You see Pietre Verdun and all the others you have lost, facedown in the Kresden cobblestones. You see Kid shaking on the ramparts, struggling to get air into lungs that simply didn't exist anymore.

”And Kid? Pietre? Durvano? Why didn’t you save them? Was the price I paid for your favour not enough?”

The growl that emanates from the imprisoned leviathan shakes the room. A million chains clink and clatter as a God strains against its bonds. The warmth of a furnace washes over you, promises of retribution and torment if you break your hellish bargain. Promises, but nothing more.

”…are you really so powerless?”

”Careful, brother. No need to poke God in the eye.” You cannot see Page #137, but the daemon-child sounds nervous for once. You could get used to the murderous little shit sounding nervous.

“Goodbye, Dark Father. I guess I’ll see you in Hell.” There casual dismissal does far more to infuriate this chained deity than any tantrum or promises would.

The roar of the Dark Father, patron God of Blackguards, is deafening as you turn your back on him and walk in the opposite direction, towards Page #137’s voice. The whole world, if indeed Below is a world in and of itself, trembles and quivers. The ground cracks and cold iron creaks as mighty chain struggle to contain the Dark Father’s rage. Daemons and who knows what else (for the Father is not the only thing imprisoned here) all around you shriek, cower and wail in fear. But the chains have held for millennia, they aren’t going to break despite a Mad God’s fury. Not today at least.

”Your mortal soul is at stake inn Below, in the prison of daemons and worse and you… spit in the eye of a God and then make a joke?” The daemon-child’s voice is incredulous. ”Sometimes you mortals terrify me.”

”It wasn’t untrue. My soul is forfeit when I die.”

”You mean -IF-.”

IF you die. You like the sound of IF. You can feel something in the darknes change as Page #137 gathers energy, you can feel your perception of the world begins to change.

”So eager to leave Below for us filthy mortals, #137?”

”I always forget what a dump this place is.”[/i] You can almost hear Page #137 shrug in the darkness ”Come brother, let’s go home.”

Shouting voices, men walking with a sense of purpose, your comrades living and dead. Blood, chaos and even paperwork. Cowardice and courage, mourning and camaraderie. Long marches on muddy roads. Yes, this is Home.

The Siege of Kresden, Midday Day Four, The North Wall Breach

The 7th Kreigstrom are tired, and they know that it’s going to be a long bloody day still to come.

Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus’ drillmaster voice rings out clear and true getting the men into order as the rush of Neumunster soldiers clamber up the breach in the North Wall. It’s a steep, jagged slope but a damn sight better than a long ladder with a sharp welcome at the top. It’s the perfect opportunity for the Free Alliance to bring their numbers to bear.

A skeletal hand reaches up from the rubble, clutching at an unlucky Legionnaires ankle. He screams in panic, a crossbow bolt fills his open mouth with a lethal suddenness that silences him forever.

”Draw steel.” SGT Bad Hand snarls at the other NCOs, his massive two-hander blade already clenched tight in hand. He tries and fails to keep an insane grin off his face, today is working up to be a truly decent fekking fight. Maybe the best he’s had in years.

”COMPANY!” CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus booms in his thunderous drillmaster voice. ”DRAW STEEL!”

”Cold steel!” The warriors of the 7th Kreigstrom shout back, pushing to the forefront as Black Company Infantry, Rangers and even Supply bystanders follow their lead.

”This is it. Draw Steel!” CPL Saint barks at her squad, arm and hands burnt by holy fire still managing to clench tight around the hilt of her Nightblade.

”You heard the boss, fekkers, draw steel!” LCPL Murder Meriam hisses down the line,

Trooper Caroline ‘Joker’ Schuster sucks in a heaving breath, trying to stop herself from hyperventilating. She isn’t used to being this scared, Durvano had always had her back.

”Cold steel!” Schuster screams. Who am I kidding? I always just about shit myself at this part, Durvy or no. Oh please Gods don’t let me see Durvy out here as… as one of those things.

A ratty red gauntlet pats her on the shoulder and Trooper ‘Joker’s burnt half of her face twists in surprise until she realises the rotten hand belongs to her comrade Knight-of-the-Line ‘Mask’. She can’t make out the decomposed horror that lies behind his ancient faceplate, but she knows it is there. She gives the antique armoured figure a pathetically unconvincing smirk. ”What’s the matter, Red? Scared?”

Mask looks out at the onrushing Free Alliance formations, ordered lines morphing into a rush into the breach. ”…Hrrk.” The ancient undead warrior looks back at Trooper ‘Joker’ and slowly shakes his head.

”Yeah, well… that makes one of us.” Trooper ‘Joker’ mutters, hoping that whatever comes through the breach hits her unliving comrade harder than her.

”Steeeeel!” Screams LCPL Lerrek Jurgensen, his messy tangled red hair flinging about wildly under his nasal helm as his spittle covers the shaft of his wicked longaxe. He knows very few words outside of his home Skald tongue by now, but at least he knows that one. Beside him Knight-of-the-Line Spitfire ‘Spicario’ nonchalantly takes off her flamboyant hat, inspecting that the feather is sitting right and adjusting how the headgear rests on her head just so.

”Cold steel!” She practically sings, flashing her teeth at a wide-eyed squad of young Tassenland conscripts behind her with a devil-may-care grin as she cocks one of her gunpowder pistols. ”If you’re going to die, youngsters, you might as well die well dressed!”

”Draw Steel!” The junior-NCOs repeat down the line, thumping their comrades on the shoulder as blades flick out at the ready, soon to be wetted by blood.

”Cold steel!” Comes the retort. It’s a good chant, better than the patriotic piss the Neumunster Legionnaires are shouting. Black Hearts, Dark Deeds, Cold Steel. It’s shouted as a fact, a truth and a promise. What sets the soldier apart from the civilian is the cold steel they bear and their willingness and skill to use it.

Troopers Nissar Belhamun and Smiles-at-Dice shake hands, the escaped slave magi-scribe’s hand looking comically tiny in the clawed grip of the hulking Wildborn. Nissar's friendship with the WIldborn abomination requires a particularly creative interpretation of the Prophet's lessons, but Nissar hasn't read any of his verses in years anyway. ”Smiles-Sadiqi, I know this is no the end. Many time now two of us must be of dying. Not dying here, not this this. Be no afraid my friend, we are two of soul.”

”It all comes down to the numbers, human. But…” Nissar looks up at the brawny creature with a quizzical expression. If Trooper Smiles warm grin is merely the result of his horrific scar it is impossible for Nissar to tell. ”…I hope they are not your numbers today.”

”COLD STEEL!” The men of the Company roar. More than a hundred pairs of eyes follow your clanking footsteps, stepping out from the ranks in the face of some thousand charging Legionaries.

”Is that…”

”Holy fekking…”

”Don’t just stand there gawking, you cocksleeves!” Good ol’ Bad Hand. ”Are you going to let the Lieutenant do all your fighting for you?!”

With an irrational roar your 7th Kriegstrom follows you into the breach.

They may fear you, some like the 4th Infantry may even hate you, but the Sheep can fear the Mutt and still be thankful that it keeps away the Lion. In times of darkness the blind man is King, so it follows that in a place of mass murder only the foulest death-dealer shall reign supreme. You will lead them down into this hell, and drag them out to the other side of it.

The Siege of Kresden, Day Four, The Battle of the Breach

You don’t so much as charge the Neumunster lines as you do stroll through them. The grizzled Legionnaires infront of you, veterans of a dozen campaigns, swerve as they climb or stop altogether. The wave of Neumunster swarms -around- you like a shoal of fish faced with a predator. No one wants to be the first to test their mettle against you. You are several ranks deep in the enemy formation before you stop, a dozen enemy soldier close enough to reach out and touch. Each of them stare at you with naked fear, they’ve all heard the stories.

”Where is your commander?”

Utter silence. Behind you the front ranks of Neumunster climbing up the breach is met by the Kreigstrom charging down. The Neumunster crumples hard, dozens of their number die in as many seconds.

One of the Neumunster in front of you, braver and stupider than the rest, gives a frail shout and charges forward with his halberd. You blade sweeps straight through the haft, your armoured forehead slams into the upstart mortal’s nose with a sickening crunch. You stare at the shocked circle of troops around you their comrades blood streaking across your helmet. The brave fool groans, slumped at your feet.

”I will continue to ask ‘Where is your commander?’ until I have an answer. Each time I have to ask, I will become less and less… polite.”

"Han spurte deg et sporsmål, morpike!” One of your men runs to your side, shoving aside any Neumunster that gets in his way contemptuously. Maybe this Skald has something to prove, running so far ahead of the rest of the Platoon even as they carve into the struggling Neumunster with avengeance. ”Hvem er din leder?!”

You waste a brief moment struggling to remember which Skald this was. Utred Horst? Hans Rusti? Blonde, chainmail with wicked two-handed longaxes. Neither of them speak a lick of common. You shrug. Looks like you’ll have to ask the hard way.

”Where is your commander?”

You slam your steel boot into the shoulder of the cowering Neumunster Private at your feet, he screams in pain as bones crack under your heel. None of his brothers-in-arms rush forward to help him. You can taste their feel as the whole assault wave collapses. They don’t stand a chance, black mists pouring up from the rubble beneath their legs, teeth gnashing at heels, legs and groins as they fight a literal uphill battle. The men of the Free Alliance are brave, not insane. They break.

”Where. Is your. Commander?” Your words are punctuated by the scream of the wounded man and the harsh laughter of Hans Rusti, who all but dares the Neumunster to try the two of you.

A piteous groan escapes the wounded soldier under your feet, a shaking hand pointing at an armoured figure with a plumed helm hanging in the back rank watching the display with unmitigated horror.

”Oh, fek.” He tries to run but the mist you command has him rooted to the spot, hungry eyes watch from the floor with glee as he kicks at the clawed hands reaching up at him. Finally he breaks free, scrambling to get away. As he turns to flee he finds himself staring down the barrel of a matchlock pistol.

”Ah, ah, ah, not so fast ventosa.” There is nothing friendly about ‘Spitfire’ Spicario’s smile as she flicks her hair, glamourous as ever. ”I think the Lieutenant would like a dance with you.”

”About time.” Your haunting voice is clear even above the clash of steel and screams of the dying. You heft your wicked zweihander off your shouldered defence stance. ”Now, let’s begin.”

I may have to tweak Call of the Night to only add 1 additional +5/10DC if it has been active for more than one turn.

Otherwise it gets a little bloody ridiculous. It's like the Hulk vs The Hulk's Bodyweight in Bees. Except with bats and other creatures of darkness.

You step forward and pounce towards the terrified enemy leader, your leap unintentionally (not that you care) crushing the skull of the unfortunate wounded Legionnaire underfoot. Finally, his screams are cut off.
To his credit the grizzled Neumunster Sergeant bravely steps in front you, blocking your way to their Lieutenant. It has much the same effect as stepping in front of a charging bull. You send him flying, your overhead swordstroke not even interrupted as you swing it in a deadly arc straight down the middle of the screaming Neumunster commander. It’s a hell of corpse that you make. You step back very quickly as the gory remains of the enemy LT explodes into blue flames. You glare at a very focused Trooper Nissar Belhamun pouring flame into the corpse.

”Oh. I am think this man was very dead before the burning, naam Emir-Lootenen?” Nissar puts out his blue-burning magik hands with an embarrassed expression.
Hans Rusti lets out another harsh laugh, his axe slamming into the back of the still-twitching Private’s skull. [red”Rask reise til Valhalla her!”[/red] Something black as pitch with too many eyes drags the Private’s corpse away.

‘Spitfire’ Spicario blows a tuft of hair out of her eyes, two pistols trained on two separate targets. ”I think my Skaldic friend here is encouraging you to beat a hasty retreat.”

There is a muffled groan as their Sergeant gets back up, doubled over in pain. Men, hard men that have fought and killed everything the Necromancer has had to offer before you, watch him and you cautiously. They are caught on that knife’s edge between duty and their basic desire to live. The SGT looks behind you, your cheering brothers in black holding aloft a golden eagle.

”… Fek this, boys. Emperor is dead, war is fekking lost anyway.” The Neumunster Sergeant clutches his side, sword lowered but still in his grip He spits. ”I’m heading to Sabari.”

He gives you and the corpse of his commander one last look, shivers, and then turns to leave muttering.

”Sabari ain’t far enough. Maybe the Raj, nice beaches I hear…”

Allow a path for the enemy to run. If such a path exists, more will follow, more will run. No path back means the opposing force will potentially fight to the death.

Two reasons
Logically, if they can run, they will and more will follow, weakening enemy forces over all

Character wise, prince is a literal monster, but he does it for the company, not sadism. Anymore than this is just wasted effort and not enjoyable for anyone involved.

"A wise decision. I advise you follow him.”

The remaining soldiers need no further encouragement, fleeing after their Sergeant in a single group even as the rest of the Legio dissolves in moments to every man for himself. Who knows, perhaps they'll start their own band of mercs for hire? They have the right attitude, brave but not to the point of stupidity.

For them the war might be over, or just about. But there are plenty of die-hard Free Alliance souls where they came from. Your job is far from finished.

It's a big deal to seize a Legio Eagle. I wonder if that will be something to win the Captain's affection?

Reminder, if more than one section reaches Untenable levels the battle is not instantly lost. You still have Asgorga (collateral damage ho!) and the Kreigstrom can redeploy if they win at their current post, but it will mean the battle is heavily skewed against them. Fighting spills into the streets as the Free Alliance presses its numbers advantage.

No, you siezed the Eagle.

To be honest I have no idea what to do with that, I never really expected the utter annihilation of a battle-force (as opposed to an individual opponent) to come up. In any case, as far as the Neumunster Legionnaires are concerned your Kreigstrom are king-shit of fek-hill. No one wants their proud Legio to end up like the III. They both fear, hate and respect you with a special degree beyond the average Free Alliance warrior.

You can already hear CPL 'Jack' Marcus shaking his head and muttering that in his day a Legion would have died to the last man before they gave up the eagle.

"The III were always soft bastards. Now my old Legion, the VI, THEY wouldn't have stood for any eagle-snatching."

Trooper 'Joker' is already teasing him about it.

The Free Alliance suffered a serious setback at your weakest point, the breach. But elsewhere the assault continues as planned, almost everywhere the enemy is on the verge of breaking through and carrying the walls. The cost in manpower is immense, but it’s working.
This is it. If you lose the walls it will be a matter of hours, not days, that you can hold them off from the backstreets and the Manor, now a makeshift Keep.

Northern Section (The North Tower): UNTENABLE
North-Western Section (The North Wall): COLLAPSING[/blue] Breach: Can only ever max at Secure.
Western Section (The Western Gate): UNTENALBE
South-Western Section (The South Wall): UNTENABLE

The enemy General is spending his men’s lives like a sailor in a Sabari whorehouse, but it’s working. To the North Tower you can see the press of green-robed Ajiyimad mercenaries being steadily pushed back. To the South you can see the Tassenland and Yellow Dog banners wavering, flashing steel spilling into the stairways leading to the streets. At least the 4th Infantry and other Black Company reserves hold the breached North Wall, but that is the only good news?

Your men are already committed to holding the Western Gate, the Neumunster soldiers overwhelming the rotten and skeletal dead in front of you faster than the cultists can ever summon them. Soon they’ll come to grips with your Kreigstrom. You don’t doubt that you can win here. But you can’t be everywhere at once.

”Liuetenant Prince, sir!” CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus snaps to attention in front of you, some of his old Legio career shining through.

”What is it Corporal?” You rasp, eyes one the impending melee.

”Sir! Our position is faltering to the North, request permission to take 2nd Squad there and retake the Tower, sir!” If he finds your new voice and appearance disturbing then he’s professional enough not to let it show.

”Just us? No fekking way. That’s fekking suicide!” Trooper Caroline ‘Joker’ Schuster gasps in disbelief, loud enough for you to hear. You and CPL ‘Jack’ glance at her. She flinches but holds her ground. ”Well, it is! …Sir.”

It wouldn’t be easy, that is for certain. There’s a decent chance of that being a one way trip. You could concentrate your faces, crush each assault one by one as you make your way to all the weak points. Your men would be exhausted, and the enemy perhaps already too far along in securing their position to make a difference. But at least you’d be together in one manageable force, a Kreigstrom hammer.

You also have Asgorga to consider. Should you unleash him against the Southern position and buy your forces some time? Collateral damage be damned, the Yellow Dogs and Tassenland greenfoots can burn if they aren’t smart enough to get out in time.

You look back at CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus standing at attention. He thinks he can do it, but certainly the rest of your old gang from 2nd Squad look less than enthused to be volunteered for such a dangerous mission.

If you were Captain, yes. But you have your orders "Hold the Wall, Don't Die" and, like a good little soldier, you intend to follow them.

Captain 'Cutthroat' Kiranova is probably correct here, the Manor is a good defensible position but it's not going to last long against the attentions of a literal army.

Even though the Legio III fled and dissipated the next assault wave was marching straight on through. Fighting continues at the breach even now.

You'd never make it to their command tent during the daytime as they launch their attacks, even with Asgorga spearheading the attack. But at night, with a Vampiric special ops force in support... And I really like the idea of using the Eagle standard to give you some legitimacy.

If you guys survive the day it will be something to discuss.

2nd Squad has been with you since the beginning of this campaign. CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus, Knight-of-the-Line ‘Mask’, Troopers Caroline ‘Joker’ Schuster, ‘Smiles’-at-Dice, Nissar Belhamun. Not everyone has made it this far, Knight-of-the-Line Pietre Verdun and Troopers Vendis Durvano and Kid are cold and dead. There are new faces too, the tall LCPL ‘Hard’ Hida is still adjusting to her squad. You won’t be there to help them. But, of all the 7th Kreigstrom, they are probably the ones you can rely on to work as a team at get the job done.

The fate of the Company may very well depend on it.

(1) 2nd Squad vs The 1st Neumunster Legion
>Medium DC 60

0 = The North Tower. The fighting spills into the streets as the Free Alliance senses victory.
1 = North Tower Collapsing. They’re hanging on by the skin of their teeth, but the Free Alliance can’t seem to make any further heady.
2 = North Tower Secure. 2nd Squad has turned the tide, leading a ragtag band of Ajiyimad Mercs and Black Company Infantry and Ranger to retake the tower.
3 = North Tower Stalwart. CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus loves it when a plan comes together. [Reduce any casualty severity in the next set of rolls by 1]

(3) 2nd Squad Casualties
>Medium DC 60

0 = “We tried, sir.” All 2nd Squad members roll on the casualty table. CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus rolls at +2 severity.
1 = CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus and 1 other 2nd Squad member rolls on the casualty table. [Companion Success] – For 2nd Squad members always roll 2 cas rolls and pick the lowest.
2 = 1 member of 2nd squad rolls on the casualty table. [Companion Success] – For 2nd Squad members always roll 2 cas rolls and pick the lowest.
3 = “Like taking candy from a baby, boss.” No rolls on the casualty table. [Companion Success] – For 2nd Squad members always roll 2 cas rolls and pick the lowest AND all non-nickname members earn their names.

Well, as with Legless Jenny we will deal with that later. Your ever-professional by-the-book NCO is gone, he died knowing that he did his bit and that his comrades trusted him to get the job done. There are worse ways for an ex-Legionnaire to go.

---------------------------------------------------------

Your fire the FLRE (Fire-breathing Lizard Response Expecter), the flaming torch leaves a streak of coloured smoke in its wake as it arcs over the South Wall. Through some ingenious invention of Supply a small chute deploys and leaves the FLRE shot floating down gently over the melee. It’s such a curious sight that heads on both sides turn to watch. Hopefully those on your side will clue on quickly enough.

You have done well to train Asgorga, or at least break him in, your Dragon will respond to your command – even if he can’t see it the signal attached by Page #137 to the torch-chute will get his attention all the same.

(1) ASGORGA vs The 2nd Neumunster Legion
>Medium DC 60
0 = South Wall has fallen. Through luck or magic the foe was unaffected by the flames while the Yellow Dogs and Tassenland weren’t.
1 = South Wall Collapsing. Fire is indiscrimate, Legionnaires and mercenaries alike burn alive. The wall is exposed, but there are no enemies in the vicinity to take advantage of that just yet.
2 = South Wall Secure. Asgorga brought fire and flame to the South Wall as impressed. The Yellow Dogs and Tassenland were smart enough to get out of the way in time.
3 = South Wall Stalwart. Asgorga’s precision with his flame and claw is quite impressive, and that he even bothered to learn the difference between the two sides. [Re-roll a failed roll below]

(2) ASGORGA vs The Archangels
>Medium DC 60
0 = ‘DEUS VULT!’ The Pegasus Knights were waiting for this exact moment, a hero of legend smites your dragon.
1 = The Pegasus Knights attack, dealing your dragon a mighty blow. Asgorga is out of the picture. He might never fly again…
2 = The Pegasus Knights attack, but Asgorga kills a few and fends the rest off.
3 = ‘BURN’ Your dragon is like a fox let loose in the henhouse. The sky is full of burning Pegasus wings. [Bonus to further Asgorga actions]

Asgorga is in his element.

Some men can't flee as the flying monster swoops in, mouth gaping. They find themselves trapped at the walls inner-edge and the press of bodies. Those who jump live, with the occasional broken bone, those who hesitate die.

There are a few Yellow Dogs and Tassenland troops that are caught in the fiery immolation, those too slow or too wounded to get out of the way in time. But for the most part it is entirely the Neumunster Leigionnaires that are consumed in the raging inferno. The entire Southern Wall lights up like a perversely extravagant signal fire and everyone not currently fighting for their lives turns to stare at the display of raw destructive power in awe.

A clarion call of trumpets announces the intervention of the Chevalisse Archangels, the famed Pegasus Knights. You find that particularly stupid, that they would herald themselves rather than attempt to catch the dragon off-guard. A brave knight swoops in, his lance misses Asgorga by a handswidth, he dies.

Asgorga's foretalons latch out to grab two Pegasus Knights, one successfully fends the creature off with a flaming blade while the other dies with his beautiful mount as they are crushed to death in an instant.

At this height, even the slightest wound can spell death. An injury that might lame a horse or dismount a rider proves deadly, as one knight learns when Asgorga's tail clips the wing of his Pegasus breaking it. Man and flying-horse both scream as they plummet to their death.

The battle continues to rage, but you have ceased watching it. Ahead, the Neumunster Legionnaires have finally broken through the undead ranks. You find yourself hoping that the leader of this lot provides more sport than the last.

Until then, let me know what you think about the different helms for a Black Company 2230AD series of one-shots.

I've already got most of the setting fleshed out so feel free to ask questions if you like. The general theme is that humans got screwed over early in the space-empire game and have to make a living as the unscrupulous low-wage workers or hired muscle for the more established races.
>>
>>2225723

>>
>>2225723

I imagine it'd be fairly to carry over their roles. I like the aestethics, but I am unsure whether the styles are far too different from each other to properly represent different corps. A Knight-helm certainly gives off an entirely different sci-fi vibe than the Mech ones after all.

>>2225778
Casualty re-rolls have always been at the discretion of the initial roller. Up until now it's worked out fine.

Rangers = Infiltrators/Special Ops
Infantry = Infantry
Kreigstrom = Shock assault / Drop troops

Maybe we can have a one-shot featuring Supply or Pilots.

>>2226034
>Magic
I'm leaning towards pure sci-fi, but perhaps a Space Odyssey style or ancient evil in the corners of the setting may be worthwhile. Certainly magic won't be anything the majority of the setting believes actually exists.

>Prominent Aliens
To name a few:
Auxl: redskinned/white-haired simians of the honorable clan warrior sort. Vassals to the Ixdar. One of the few races that are undeniably better than humans when it comes to fighting and waging war.

Ixdar: Ancient-china style insectoids in charge of a burgeoning administrative nightmare of an empire so large that they pay little to no attention to their own borders.

Federation races: Includes the repitllian Drax, avian Asandi, nocturnal Vesh and many others. Probably the most tolerant of humans all things considered, in the same way that the US is tolerant of mexican immigrants. The Drax are probably better soldiers than humans, but

Savis Empire: A cross between a Fox, Rat and an 18th century britishman. Expansionist and mercantile to the extreme, their fecundity is only held in check by their short lifespan. They and the trollish Chort neatly carved up any nice-looking human claimed worlds following the disaster. Humans are second class citizens on Savis worlds, exterminated and hunted on Chort worlds.

League of Dis: A collection of escaped slaves (of all races) that managed to breakaway from their Savis masters. The Federation doesn't let them join, preferring to use their territory as a stop-gap between their core worlds and the Savis empire. Constant brushfire wars and raids occur here.

Belacossa: Spiritual plant people that were all about the song and dance until their homeworld was destroyed in the same disaster that took out the human empire. Probably the most bro-tier of the alien races, simply because they're in the same shitty boat as humans but with more of them in the service/entertainment/menial labour industry than outright warriors.

Unless you are very lucky, to be born a human is to be born into the life of a lawless scavenger or harsh servitude. Mercenary pay is a fairly modest wage-earner, which to a human is an absolute fortune.
>>
I'm also considering having oxygen be considered a vital commodity (only to humans) but I'm not sure if that's too gimmicky.

>>2226554
Short answer = Cheap.
Long answer = Cheap, but sheer experience makes them very, very good.

Humans are also officially listed as one of the races with 'higher than acceptable occurrences of mental insanity'. Which explains why the Kreiger Helldrops consist almost enitrely of humans.

The sad truth is that the disaster that screwed over humans and the Belacossa wasn't the fault yourselves or any of the other races. They barely lifted a finger to help, and took full advantage of the situation sure, but they were actually the ones to all band together and finally end the threat that destroyed the human habitable worlds.

Big heroes, shiny medals, pats on the back all around between all races. Only pity for the poor humans that had their habitable worlds devoured before the Swarm was stopped.

>>2226171
The majority-human Black Company is practically a legend amongst the humans of the ungoverned mining colonies. Not because they are particularly good people, but because they win. Or at least survive. That makes them heroes to a lot of people.

>LT Prince inflicted 4 Damage [30/30 HP]
>LCPL Leo Zimmerman has suffered a crushed collarbone. [6/10 HP]
>Call of the Night Activated! (Prince)
>To Me! Activated! (Field-Marshal)

The Neumunster forces that assaulted the breach did not have an easy approach, dogged by crossbow and navigating the rubble strewn the still-squirming undead corpses. It was impossible to keep formation as your . That is not so here.
A greying old man leads them from the fore, armoured shined to an almost white sheen as his . The old man is surrounded by the toughest sons-of-bitches in the Neumunster Empire, the inner circle of NCOs in the Legio VI. Every one of his chosen subordinates sports a facial scar, ranging to from dashingly heroic to strikingly horrific.
They lead the charged through the Western Gate into your lines. It’s messy and disorganized as the 6th Legion clears the last of the undead to be met by your Kreigstrom. It’s perfect for your men, up close and personal in the messy melee is their preferred killing ground. They inflict quite a blow in the first few seconds, but soon enough the Neumunster get their bearings and begin to fight as a unit.
”Zimmerman, old boy, be a good lad and buy me a moment would you. I need to think.” To your disappointment the old man ignores you entirely, eyes on the battlefield. A hardened Neumunster Legionnaire with a grim face steps forward and blocks the way.
He swings a short blade at you, trying to entice you into overstepping and allow his mates to surround you. Instead he pushes too hard, earning a broken collarbone as your sword flicks past his last swing and carves into his chest, sending him crashing to the ground. It says much for Neumunster-forged steel that your blow was turned from lethal into merely incredibly painful and debilitating.

”Oh my!” The mild-mannered enemy commander appears mildly concerned for his unlucky subordinate. ”Corporal Benji, help Zimmerman up. I’ll be with you in just a moment. Sergeant Vilp, Needle formation if you please.”

[1/3]
>>
>>2228406

”SIXTH SOLJAAAS! ” The Master-Sergeant Vilp, sporting an eyepatch and a distinctly un-Neumunster like mustache, bellows across the battlefield, audible over any other noise. The entire Neumunster formation breaks off contact, a practiced manoeuvre that is downright awe-inspiring in the face of your Kreigstrom carving into them. One of your men, Trooper Lokrey ‘Brittle’, tries to carve an opening and earns a hand split down the middle for his efforts. A wall of sharpened steel keep the majority of your men at bay as ”FIIIIIIIIX PIKE!”

The wall of sharp steel clusters around their commander, like a porcupine of iron needles held by incredibly disgruntled Legionnaires. For a moment all is still, a break in the combat even as the two sides peel off from each other.

”Slow and steady wins the race, my boys.” Their white-bearded leader nods approvingly. ”Good show, good show. Right. Sergeant, if you will...”

”SIXTH SOLJAAS!” The hollering Master-Sergeant screams again, his face turning red and his voice remains about as harmonious as clattering of pots. ” AD-VANCE!”
The Neumunster soldiers march forward cautiously in a tight formation of bristling spears. Step-by-step.

”There we go, cut him off from the others. Back two paces, Benji, you’re still too close.” The old Field Marshall instructs his men with a calm familiarity. He seems to know all their names, and if he is fazed by the sheer menace that you excude it certainly doesn’t show. ”These types of dark-fellows are dangerous one-on-one but with some good old Neumunster teamwork we will have this chap in hand soon enough.”
The Legionnaires obey his commands, raining down blows wherever you leave gaps in your defence. It is humiliating, every attempt to reach out and cut one of the grizzled Legionnaires down is stalled by the weapons of his fellows. Soon you are surrounded in their formation, your men are hopelessly cut off from coming to your aid as the rest of the Neumunster keep them in check. You start to hurt, you even start to bleed. On the plus side, today has taught you some healthy respect for mortals in numbers. Something you were in danger of forgetting.

”We been ‘itting him again and again, sarge!” The disgruntled Legionnaire Private practically whines. ”The big, black bastard just won’t go down!”

”You call that a hit Private Weinstein?” The Master-Sergeant bellows as he whirls behind you with his halberd. ”THAT is a hit!”

The sudden clang in the back of your helm sends your ears rearing, fouling your shot with the pistol. It goes clattering to the cobblestone out of sight.

”Hey… is it get dark or something?” One of the bystanding soldiers says between swings.

It is indeed getting very dark, very quickly despite sunset being over an hour away. Within minutes the North Tower and South Wall are no longer visible.

The Field Marshall is no fool, wily enough to realise that something is amiss. ”Tighten up the lines! Easy does it! Sergeant Vilp, wounded to the rear. Things are about to get rough…”

Finally you catch a breath, rearing up to your full height as the Neumunster soldiers pale and take a step back. Your armour is a little dented and there is a blade leaking down the bottom of your neckline. But you otherwise appear utterly unharmed after a full minute of able-bodied men chopping away at you with sword and halberd.

”My turn.”

Dark Disciple affects the next round. So if you wanted to use a whole bunch of orders (maybe finish the enemy force off) you might go with Officer Material instead.

For those voting for Sword of Sovereignty but no orders, I'll remind you that the SoS grants a free order. As does Officer material.

If both are active Prince can use two orders without the slightest impairment to his combat ability.

It’s just you against nearly a dozen men. And not just any men, the hardest and most professional soldiers the Neumunster Empire has to offer. These men have seen years of the horrors of war, decades even, and have never been found wanting. They fight as a unit, an organised team geared towards taking down superior monsters like yourself. And you are -still- winning.

One of the Neumunster Corporals attempts to grab the soldier with the crushed collarbone out of the way but it is too late, your blade carves the unfortunate wounded man in half at the waste. Only the ready halberds of the other legionnaires prick at you and prevent his comrade sharing his fate. You feel much like a cage tiger, held back by guts and spearpoint alone. As soon as you close in with them… you will tear them apart.

”It’s got me! Holy Mother, it’s got me!“ The whinging Private from before is practically screaming at the top of his lungs as a mist-wolf tears at his leg and a bat pulls at his head.

All around the battlefield there are similar sights, fangs and maws belonging to creatures that have no business being in a built up town area leap out of the encroaching darkness. The Neumunster pike formation wavers, more from confusion than actual damage sustained. Your men take advantage of it, the wounded Trooper Lokrey ‘Brittle’ leading the charge, wielding his two-handed sword as best he can with his bloody split hand held against his chest. He bowls over two pikemen to get to you, nearly impaling himself multiple times by either accident or design. Behind him come the rest of your lads, straining to come to your aid.

”Reform the lines! Sergeant Vilp, wheel back around! Steady there boys!” The old Field-Marshall speaks with a calm authority. ”We’ve been in tighter spots than this.”

”We have?” One of the Corporals mutters as he watches you pull your blade out of your previous opponent. Another next to him shakes his head in resignation. But they both heft their blades and begin to circle you.

One of the Neumunster jabs at you with his halberd but Trooper Lokrey ‘Brittle’ parries it, an impressive feat with one hand cleft in twain. More of your men pour through the gap in the Neumunster lines as the encroaching darkness and swarm of foul creatures cause havoc. Your men are used to it by now, the enemy is not.
The distraction is all you need, in a single motion you are in the midst of the Neumunster attackers. They begin to die. The first attempts to whirl around from Trooper ‘Brittle’ to face you but he is far too slow, your blade erupts from the front of his chest and red spittle covers a snarling Trooper ‘Brittle’ across the face.

The second Legionnaire hesitates and dies, your clawed gauntlets rake him across the face with such ferocity the man is made both blind and incapable of speech. He swings wildly, screaming, but all he achieves is fouling his fellow Legionnaire’s stance. It is all to easy for you to side-step your blinded opponent and slide your steel up into his distracted comrade’s gut, -under- his breastplate.

You leave the blind man behind you, easy meat for the carrion and ethereal wolves bounding between the lines. They are denied their prey however as an unnaturally elongated claw, pale and spindly, reaches out of the shadows and inexorably drags the shouting legionnaire into the darkness.

You have their leader within your grasp and swing your giant blade up in a finishing blow before the old man can even draw his weapon. You are foiled however as the Master-Sergeant steps between you and your prey, parrying your infernally strong blow in a feat of courage and skill that is well deserved of one of the Empire’s finest.

”By GOD you will not touch him!” The Master-Sergeant with the eyepatch scowls, gritting his teeth with the effort required to hold you back.

”Thank you for that. Right gentlemen, it’s looks like this is it.” The aging Field-Marshall sighs, chucking aside his baton and drawing an enchanted blade. ”Sergeant Vilps, Sergeant Grimm. It has been an absolute honour and a privilege.”

”That it has.” The other Sergeant by his side grunts, hacking away another one of the grasping claws. ”But it ain’t over for us just yet, sir.”

The loyalty of the two Neumunster veterans is touching, in it’s own way. You are relieved that you can still recognise the bravery and courage of mortal men. They have earned your respect, though that is not the same as earning your mercy.

Okay, rolling to seize the eagle isn't in the bag yet as you still need to finish off the Personal Combat.

Continuing with the awfully one-sided Battle progress will assist with the roll to grab the Eagle (unless you somehow get them to hit -6 Discipline, which will automatically net you the eagle)

-------------------------
Continue rolling for Battle Progress?

They haven't had a chance to see you yet, it being daytime. But they will swiftly switch from viewing you as a powerful rival to simply self-preservation. To them you're in the same power tier as Superior Syka, maybe even the Necromancer.

>How does prince and the Kriegstrom stand in the annals of the Black Company history and in the history of the fighting forces of the continent?
Although everyone is doing their part to some degree, you and the Kreigstrom are almost single-handedly carrying the Black Company through this siege. The annalist is reflecting that. Your men (though the More than Human +10DC begs the question whether they are really men) are arguably the greatest band of fighters on the continent. The Highlanders are chomping at the bit to test their mettle against you.

The Neumunster soldiers all leap at you at once, you fend them off with ease. A blow to the Master-Sergeant forces him to back off, head spinning and teeth decorating the Below-warped cobblestone. The old Field-Marshal is plucky, but he’s clearly strategist rather than a natural warrior. Only his master-crafted armour prevents your riposte from finally sending the old-geezer on his way. He leans to the side coughing, trying and failing to keep his guard up.

His faithful SGT is less lucky, your sideswipe catches him square on the shoulder and crumples it against his side right side, his sword arm useless. In desperation his tries to force the point of your sword, still lodged in his shoulder, away from his throat with his bare left hand. You are forced to saw through him, should and fingers both, until you reach his throat. The man spits his curses at you even as the light leaves his eyes.

”Knock knock, motherfekkers!” The Neumunster private struggling with Lokrey ‘Brittle’ to your right suddenly has their skull explode is a squelch of scalp, bone and brain matter as your old friend SGT Bad Hand bursts into the melee with an uproarious laugh. ”Hah! You always think you can have all the fun to yourself, brother!”

*cough* 6th Fall back! Save the standard! Grimm sound the re- Grimm?” The old commander’s eyes focus on his fallen SGT’s corpses. He looks around in the dim light, in the pervasive blackness he can barely make out who is friend and foe… but from the panicked screams and cruel howls and laughter it doesn’t sound like his side is winning. *cough* *cough*Get out of here, Sergeant Vilps. Save yourself , that’s an order!”

”Ah, shove it up your arse, sir.” The Master-Sergeant with the eyepatch spits a gob of blood as he helps his commander up, readying his blade at you and your brother in black. ”Only one way for us old war dogs to go out, sir. Like proper bloody Legionnaires!”
>>
We'll say heroes head was represented by the end of SGT Grimm rather than pulling out the expired Heigelen commander's head out for a showcase.

I'm capping Call of the Night total bonus at 50DC because that really is broken. We can assume that once it reaches that point you no longer need Saint to boost it at all and it is overall much harder to dispel.

He's called Brittle because he's a bit of a nut.

Nobody gets this joke, but it seems appropriate because of his braying laugh every time he says it.

Peanut Brittle, made in his home town and nobody else knows what it is. Descriptions have resulted in people thinking that he thinks peas are a type of nut.

IDFK I don't do backstories well.
>>
>>2230265
Twice.
Once by treachery in the far south-west at the onset of the Warlord's conquest several years ago. It is one of the Warlord's favoured trophies.

Another Legion disappeared entirely overnight in the Wild to the north-west. No one knows for sure what happened to them, but it is easy enough to guess.
>>
7th Kriegstorm 'Legion Breakers'
>>
>>2230270
I wanna add on here that he somehow has a stash of the peanut brittle. No matter how bad the supply lines seem to get he always has them.

Maybe it's his last reminder of home, maybe he hands them around during lean times, maybe he has them because they're fekking delicious. Who knows
>>
>>2230284
No, he is always making imitation peanut brittle because there's no peanuts here.

It tastes terrible. So bad he doesn't eat it.

He gives it out to others though. I mean, it's better than eating rat. Usually.

nice, all the bullshit Prince has pulled is going to make him a legend in the Annals
>>
>>2230293
And the 7th is a platoon. This is quite ridiculous and you wont believe it till you see the 2 eagles.
>>
>>2230294
All the engagements that the 7th have fought in during this siege have been with the assistance of mercenaries, undead or other Black Company units.

A score of men haven't been taking on a legion of soldiers themselves. But they have been at the forefront, leading the charge and tearing the heart out of the enemy.
>>
>>2230260
Stupid thing I came up with:

Lokrey 'Brittle' isn't a composed man. He's always nervous, twitchy, fearful of Below knows what (if asked, he whispers 'Women, sir') - hence the nickname, for his brittle nerves.

How he earned it? He actually enlisted in the Rangers of the Company, and during his first assignement he freaked out like a little girl due to a teammate's joke.

Sadly, that alerted the patrol they were stalking. Fortunately, Lokrey saved the day by charging ahead like a feeking loon.

When his superior transferred him to the Kriegstorm to make use of his craziness, he said: "Brittle is either the dumbest or luckiest son of a whore I ever known. Time will tell which is right."
>>
>>2230294
Great now I want Asorga to sign on so the Kriegstrom can live up to the hype

The 6th Legion is utterly routed! Cairsun the Morning Light slays the honour-guard and seizes the Legio VI eagle! The 7th Kreigstrom enter legend, both in the annals and without.

”Right, brother.” SGT Bad Hand wipes away a bit of brain matter from his forehead with the back of his glove. ”You can have the old man, Trooper ‘Brittle’ and I will take this one.”

The two of them begin hacking away at the desperately defending Master-Sergeant with the eyepatch.

”This nut isn’t too tough to cra-OOF” The Trooper gasps, the Master-Sergeant got inside his guard drove the hilt-guard into his gut. SGT Bad Hand, never one to fight fair, strikes at him from the side. It’s a killing blow, the man’s whole side is flayed open, but the stubborn Legionnaire doesn’t know when to die.
The Field-Marshal is all yours.

”Keep your guard up, the high defence needs the forearm to be a little further forward.”
He blinks, puzzled for a moment. But he doesn’t change his stance. You can’t help it, the man has clearly spent his career in the Legion reading books of war rather than fighting them himself in person. His swordsmanship needs a lot of work.

”Strike from the hips, not the arm.” You rasp as you parry another blow easily, blade licking out and scoring a slash against his unarmoured inner-thigh. His second blow is, if anything, even weaker. You catch with a riposted, looming over the old man like a daemon straight from Below. Ironically enough, that is almost exactly what you are.

”Your footwork is for shit.” You breath, close enough to the old man’s face to kiss. Your blade and stance locks him in close as your free gauntlet reaches out towards his face and-*CRICK*

The old man’s head snaps up, over his shoulder. Field-Marshal Bainz spends a few moments trying to comprehend his viewpoint, everything is upside down. The cobblestone is pressed right against his face and back. He watches the golden eagle in the gloom, shaking for a moment before a strange fellow with a burning sword holds it aloft. It takes the old man a while to realise that for him to be viewing things from this angle his neck must be broken.

You leave the old man there, lying in the bloody stones as unnameable things feast on the corpses of his fallen subordinates around him. They died well, they died hard. But they still died.

You and SGT Bad Hand are busy cleaning your blades as Corporal Saint approaches. The blow to Trooper Brittle’s gut wasn’t as nearly as bad as it looks, LCPL Murder Meriam is already telling him to harden up. The cheerful idiot smiles nervously and promises everyone that they’ll be feasting on roasted nuts after this, his shout. The Skalds say something in their tongue and laugh. CPL Hirstun of Ligh translates the joke, something to do with Bitter’s nuts being roasted if he doesn’t get his hand looked at, and the whole platoon breaks into laughter. The 7th look like bloody madmen, hooting and grinning as they stand in the middle of a corpse-strewn battlefield.

As the darkness fades and the dull cloud-blotted sunlight returns you realise that it is good to hear the men banter, to be reminded that you’re in the company of human beings.

SGT Bad Hand grunts. ”Saint, lass, give us the butcher’s bill?”

CPL Saint looks around with a bemused expression. ”Brittle’s hand?”

SGT Bad Hand waves dismissively ”Who else? Who did we lose?”

CPL Saint shakes her head, streaks of blood flicking from her normally white hair. ”That’s it. A few nicks and scratches in that last push, but nothing to write home to the good doctor about.”

You and Bad Hand stare at Saint for a while, then look at each other. Bad Hand’s face splits into a toothy grin. ”Fek me we are good.”

At that moment your personal bodyguard Knight-Taskmaster Cairsun the Morning Light throws a golden eagle at your feet with a solid CLANG.

”One of their best warriors was guarding this. He fought very bravely.” Cairsun shrugs, indifferent. ”I killed him.”

The soldiers of the 7th Kreigstrom let forth an elated cheer. ” "Black Hearts! Black hearts!
”Cold Steel! Cold Steel!
”Dark Deeds! Dark Deeds!"

Soon it's not just the 7th cheering. All the Black Company platoons present join in, even some of the bands of non-Company mercenaries milling about salute as well. You don’t see who starts it, but eventually the cheers merge into another chant. ”All hail the Lieutenant! The Black Prince!”

”Prince! Prince! Prince! Hail to the Prince!

The adulation of your men warms your shrivelled blackened heart. It’s good to win.

Some time later, as the wounded are cleared from the field (or killed) and the dead are resurrected, you come across a dying Neumunster soldier. His weathered hand clutches at your shin-guard, still strong despite the lifeblood leaving him.

I mean up until now, sure that's where we were at. But now? We literally saw a god and turned him down, stealing as much power from him in the process as possible. We stole power. From the Father. If that doesn't put us on tier with beings like that, I dunno what does.

I was thinking something like what happened with Banished quest, when we had the broken sword that could hold an infinite amount of power but destroyed itself and tore open a hole in reality.

I hope we could become the mortal version of the dark father. Basically strap ourselves into a piece of armor that detonates when we kick the bucket for good.

That's nonsense. Dead have no use for cool trinkets, and even then I'm pretty sure that he'll be ressed as a zombie.

Even if for some weird reason he isn't, it's useless. 'Jack' Marcus was Neumunster, but he died as our Brother. He was part of the Black Company, no longer belonged to a dead empire.

>>2230379
You mentioned that a Swarm screwed humans in BC 2230's setting. What was it exactly?

And now that we burned bridges with the Dark Father I guess I can ask: was He ultimately still protecting the world in some fekked way? Was He consumed by anger and wanted everyone and everything dead? Or was he a Mad God with no real goals?

And?
Everyone already knows we've done that.
There's literally no value to the eagles themselves anymore aside from their weight in gold, which we will either not need because we are dead, or because we got FAT PAID by the necromancer after all. There's no reason to hang onto them.

I will give anons the choice between the baton of command and the hereditary sword. Certainly Prince is swole enough by now to be wielding a zweihander one-handed with relative ease, with either the baton or a shorter blade in the other. The Kreigstrom were as well armoured as the Legionnaires they slew, but there is plenty of looting of trinkets, ring and coinpurses going on.

=================================

As per the rule of quarters, your subordinates bring forth some of the choice loot for you to select.

>Rod of Authority: 1 Free Order Per Turn [Used concurrently with Sword of Sovereignty attack]

>Harkenhoff Blade: Re-roll highest non-crit result [Used concurrently with Sword of Sovereignty attack]

We shall assume only one was recovered
>>2230638

>>2230421
2230AD will be based off our timeline, so we can assume the it is either a completely different setting or several hundred years ago the Company traversed worlds again somehow. I prefer the latter explanation, but the stories recited in the annals (now with electronically recorded back-ups) from that era are mostly dismissed as highly exaggerated legends.

Prince will feature in a future BC quest (probably based around a new Trooper) assuming he survives. But only as a legend in the 2230AD oneshots.

Kiranova-sempai rolled her eyes at you naming a lake after her. I think two eagles will go down much better. Is she really the sort to humanise the monster you have become though? Or is it her duty as Captain to take full advantage of it at every turn?

>>2230429
He is tall and imposing now in the Blackthorn Armour. It is rumored amongst the rank-and-file that Prince cannot remove the armour now, as he is never seen out of it.

As anon >>2231814 guessed, they were essentially Tyranids.

Nano-technology swarms are actually a thing in this setting, the Faenwedhe were mostly wiped out by a human/Federation temperory Aliance. The previously pitched Free Charter Captain Quest was to take place during the lead up to the 2nd such war.

>Dark Father
His intentions before the millenia-long torment were genuine. Now he just wants out, and it's doubtful he would be content to leave the mortal races to their own designs if he did get out. He might try to exact his revenge on those who imprisoned him, or who stood by as he was imprisoned. Who can say what his chaotic, irrational plans would have meant for the mortal races?

I beleive it is fanart of Fullmetal alchemist actually. It's quite hard to find decent eyepatch-soldier art without immediately going Full Metal-Gear.

Lets be honest we need all the successes we can get

Dual wielding is stupid.

Also can we remove our armor? Because if the Waifu routes are locked out then it makes me happy.

Rod of authority only works IF we have the blade. Since otherwise we'd still be using the other sword with the +1 free orders anyways.

Gotta get dat Harkenhoff Blade.

Can we just duel each of the Highlanders to death 1v1? They accepted the challenge last time.

Worth tossing it out there. Having them refuse because we're monstrously deadly should at least unsettle them. Nobody wants to be monster hunting in a battle. Or ever really.

Forgotten, do you have any particular plans for the additional HPs Prince has stored, apart from healing troops?
>>
>>2233203
Those were Skalds not Highlanders, I agree with the way your thinking though.
>>
>>2233156
Can we just give the Harkenhoff Blade to Bad Hand?
>>
>>2233288
Honestly I would prefer a great big shield. For shield bashing into lines and opening up a path for our men. Also for arrows.

A normal man wouldn't even think of using a zweihander along with another weapon, much less a normal sword as a pseudo dueling dagger.
Prince is no normal man

tfw we replace our pistol with a sawn off musket cause we can manage the recoil

also I forgot to vote. Dual wielding is for shitters, stack free orders instead

How do the other legions stack against the 3rd and the 6th?

And how big a bigshot was the field marshal? Body blow to the free alliance?

Stack them Orders

We don't even use shields nibba.

In story, we can blender twices as fast, mechanics wise, rerolls

>Is she really the sort to humanise the monster you have become though? Or is it her duty as Captain to take full advantage of it at every turn?

Both, quite possibly. She knew and fought along side us for years... anything left of human in us, she has a chance to see. That said, when shit hits the fan... "Private, go find Lieutenant Prince. Tell him those fekkers are holding up his darkwood tea. And quit pissing yourself. The only one he's a threat to is them."

What's gonna happen if Saint finds out we were selling our soul to help save our Brother's lives, and after finding out the Dark Father paid too little and asked to much we basically robbed him and now are Persona non Grata in hell?

I believe Forgotten said she would be cool with it after she killed Jenny forever.
>>
> MFW Saint realizes that Asgorga is still pretty much a kid (like when she bitched at us about trying to peer pressure him into drugs) and better yet a kid that can't be killed as easily as the others have been.

Man killing Jenny was such fucking bullshit though.

Anyways we Dragonlance now.
