You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Honestly, the events of last night were a bit of a blur. All you could really recall was the taste of rum and the ring of ancient British sailing songs.

Then again, last night, both you and Dorothea were in a pretty bad place. You had a close brush with death, which resulted in Amy becoming emotionally distraught. Dorothea, well, was forced to relive events she would have very much preferred to have forgotten.

However, when you wake up, you find yourself-

You wake up to find yourself in a bed that was not your own. It was softer, larger, and far more comfortable than the relatively modest bunk in your own quarters. And that's when it hits you.

It's Dorothea's bed.

You immediately shoot straight up, your head on a swivel as you tried to get a bearing on your surroundings. You're quick to see that-

Your body freezes and you're pretty sure your face is white when you realize that Dorothea is fast asleep right beside you, rolled up in your shared blanket and snoring softly. Her hair and clothes were all messy and askew, but at least those clothes were still on, thankfully enough.

Thinking quickly you raise the blankets to inspect yourself. Clothes were still on. You were torn on whether to consider that a good thing or not.

Still, this was a rather compromising position. What do you do...?

Well, you might as well make sure that Dorothea at least got a healthy start to the day, especially after all the hard drinking the both of you had last night. You quietly and carefully slip out of the bed, Dorothea's only response mumbling something in her sleep. However, she does not wake.

You continue to sneak your way out of the bedroom and to the small kitchenette. Another little luxury afforded to the Admiral. After a quick check of the shelves and cupboards, you felt confident you had enough ingredients to whip up something decent. Some sausages, eggs, and toasted English muffin. You even threw in a can of beans you also found. Guess it was a British thing, or something. For the final touch, you fill up the kettle on the stove and start boiling up the water as you take out a few tea packets. You're not sure what flavor it was, but since there was lots of it within easy reach, you can only assume it was something Dorothea dranks regularly.

It was all simple enough that even you could handle it on your own.

"Nnnnnnnnn." You hear a groan from the bedroom. Well, less a groan and more a growl from some fierce, primordial beast.

At this point, you've already gotten everything plated and got the tea into the water. You could place everything on her table and slip out, if you wanted.

You're just finished properly tabling the breakfast when Dorothea stumbles out of the bedroom. Thankfully, it looks like she had actually taken the time to tidy herself up somewhat. Her hair was now completely undone but freshly combed, and she had a fresh set of more casual attire on. She yawns loudly and stretches, accentuating that midriff of hers before she finally realizes that you're there.

"...Harry." She coughs, managing to quickly recover, even in her weakened morning state. "I... see that you're still here."

"Well, after all that happened last night, I figured you could at least get a decent breakfast." You grin, pulling the chair back for her.

Dorothea smiles and takes the offered seat, sitting down at the table. However, before she picks up the utensils, she pauses.

"Now that you mention it, the details of last night are a bit fuzzy." She frowns and turns her head to you. "What were you doing all night?"

"Well, truth be told..." You chuckle nervously. "I'm not too sure what happened either, but when I woke up this morning, I was in bed with you."

Dorothea pauses.

"But as far as I can tell, that was all that happened." You quickly add. "It didn't go any further than that."

That's when you notice Dorothea's face was now as red as her hair.

"...perhaps I should cut back on the rum." She mumbles to herself.

"Dorothea?" You blink, leaning in curiously.

"O-oh, it's nothing! Really!" Dorothea catches herself again. "And thank you for this breakfast, it's lovely."

"Well, it's my job to please a superior officer, right?" You grin.

"Have you had anything yourself?" Dorothea frowns.

"Well, I was thinking of just stopping by the mess-"

"Well that won't do at all." Dorothea huffs. "I can't very well invite a guest and leave them to go hungry!"

"Well... if you insist." You nod.

"Excellent." Dorothea smiles and gets up from her seat. "Give me a minute or two!"

You're then left bewildered as Dorothea quickly ties her hair back and whips up a simple plate of scrambled eggs and bacon, with a side of buttered English muffin. You're not sure why, but you get the impression her cooking was leagues above yours. All the while, she's happily humming the tune of Heart of Oak.

"There you go!" She says rather happily as she puts the second plate on the table. "Now we can deal with each other as equals."

"Was that what that was all about?" You laugh as you sit down. "Well, I'm not complaining."

And so the two of you begin to dig in.

"So... how are you feeling now?" You ask her after swallowing a mouthful of egg.

"Better, I suppose." Dorothea sighs as she sips at her tea. "Perhaps what they say about venting your worries to someone is true."

"Well, if something does happen-"

"Then I know who to talk to." Dorothea smiles. "I don't know why, but talking to you like this... it makes me believe things can be different this time. That maybe we can pull off a real miracle."

"Well, assuming we don't all die horribly at the hands of the Zentradi or whatever god knows what else is out there." Dorothea shrugs. "But I suppose it's the thought that counts."

"You know, we really should do this more often." You suggest. "Though maybe in a more civilian setting."

"Harry." Dorothea's mouth almost seems to smirk. "Are you asking your own Admiral out to a date?"

"Guess I shouldn't let my guard down around you, huh?" You laugh. "All right, a date it is."

"Assuming we ever have a chance to get some leave." Dorothea sighs. "There's still so much to do. Amy, for starters."

"I think I can talk to her now that she's had the night to cool off." You assure her.

"I could use the backup." You nod.

"Then what would be our plan of attack?" She asks, chewing on the last bit of sausage. "Frontal assault on her stronghold?"

"Hmmmm, not sure. She does have a tendency of holing up." You frown. "But the kid ain't invincible. She's gotta come out eventually in order to eat and everything. Maybe we can catch her out of her room."

"Sounds like far too much trouble that can be easily avoided." Dorothea frowns.

"Going at her in her room will just make her feel cornered." You point out.

"Well, I'm pretty sure she'll listen to Lara." You say.

"It's worth a try." Dorothea nods in agreement.

You take out your phone and call up Lara.

"Cap!" Lara's voice booms through the speakers. "Holy shit, where'd ya go? We were looking for ya all night!"

"Uh, I've just been really tired so I slept in." You felt a bit bad lying to Lara, but this felt like something you couldn't just freely tell others, especially over an unsecure line.

You just hoped Lara would buy it.

"Huh, okay then!" Lara says happily. Guess she had no reason to suspect you. "So what do ya need?"

"You think you can get Amy out of her room?" You request. "I dunno, invite her out to eat or mess around in the simulators. Me and the Admiral need to talk to her."

"Huh... Amy might not like much after this." Lara mumbles. "But... if ya need me to, I'll do it, Cap!"

"Thanks a lot, Lara."

"You owe me BIG." She declares.

"Yeah, I'll make it up to you. Thanks."

"Right, right, so I can get her out to the sim pods. Just meet us there in five." Lara sighs.

"Wait..." You pause. "Are you actually WITH her right now?"

"Yeah, kinda." Lara nods. "Just been watching movies with Amy. Guess she wanted some company or something. Wouldn't say a word, though."

Interesting...

"Anyways, see ya later, Cap!'

And then the call disconnects.

"All right, Lara came through for us." You nod to Dorothea. "They'll be at the sim chamber."

"Excellent." Dorothea nods. "Let's go then."

It's a quick trek over to the sim pods, where many of the pilots begin to cautiously clear out upon seeing the Dorothea arrive. They weren't about to stick around to see why the Admiral was present. All the better for you.

"She's in there." Lara waves at the both of you, pointing to a single pod in use.

"I suppose this is it." Dorothea sighs.

"You stay back for now, Admiral. I'll test the waters." You say to Dorothea.

"Right." She nods, deferring to your judgment.

You cautiously approach the sim pod and knock on the side with a metallic rap.

"Lara, I told you not to disturb-" Amy opens up the door pauses when she sees you.

"Yo." You wave to her. "Got a minute to talk?"

"I get the feeling I don't have any choice anyways." Amy frowns. "Fine. But make it quick."

"I'm sorry for nearly getting myself killed." You sigh. "I know it must have been hard for you to watch."

"DAMN RIGHT IT WAS!" Amy shouts. "You know, you go through so much trouble to be friendly with me, backing me up, but then you go and.. and..."

You brace for another punch, but this time Amy just lunges forward and wraps you up in a hug, pressing her head against your chest.

"I... I don't think I could deal with losing you." She admits, her voice slightly muffled. "I don't know what to do if you're gone."

I’m glad that you care, but...

...Amy, I’m a pilot. Every time I get into that cockpit I know that I may not be coming back. Everyone on the force have lost someone in fighting. But we still keep doing it. Because we’re taking those risks for a reason.

"I understand." You say as you return the hug. "But even so, I'm a pilot. I risk my life for a living, so I can't guarantee that I'll come back every time. I hope you understand that."

"...doesn't mean I have to like it." Amy grumbles.

"Amy." Dorothea now takes the opportunity to step in. "I know we haven't had the best of starts-"

"Admiral." Amy grunts, her hug on you tightening. "Come to drag me back in?"

"On the contrary." Dorothea shakes her head. "It's rather clear to me that while you have the raw talent of a galactic idol, you don't have determination or mental fortitude to be one."

"So you're saying I'm not good enough?" Amy narrows her eyes.

"What I am saying is that more must be done in regards to your training." Dorothea responds. "So far, you've only done idol training as directed by Karla, but that clearly is not enough."

"What, so you need me to do more pushups or something?" Amy frowns.

"Something like that." Dorothea then turns her gaze to you. "Captain Neumann."

"Admiral." You stand to attention.

"While Karla teaches Amy to be an idol, I will leave it to you to teach her how to be a soldier in both skills and mindset. Can you do it?"

I don't really think Amy should be a soldier, having certain skills is fine and dandy, but we wouldn't want to change who she is now.

I’ll do my best, but let me point out that we don’t want Amy to turn into cold blooded killing machine. Becoming too much of a soldier could well impair the sensitivity she needs as an Idol.

"Of course I can." You nod. "But don't take that as meaning I'll turn her into some kind of emotionless killing machine."

"All I ask is that she's able to perform when the time comes." Dorothea's eyes then focus on you. "Regardless of what happens."

"Understood." You nod.

"Well then." Dorothea finally relaxes, just a tad. "Williams."

"Yeah, Admiral?" Lara responds.

"There are still numerous things to take care of before the Fleet leaves this sector. If you could accompany me to the briefing with Kellerman..."

"Sure thing, Admiral!" Lara salutes and follows Dorothea out, but not before giving you a playful wink.

"Captain, I expect to see you there too." Dorothea adds before leaving.

"Yes, Admiral." You affirm.

"Hnnnnnnnnnn." Amy squints at you.

"...what?" You ask curiously.

"Seems like you and the Admiral have gotten really buddy buddy..." Amy starts squinting even harder. "Are you two dating or something?"

"Did Karla tell you that?" You frown.

"Of course not! As if I'd believe anything she tells me!" Amy rolls her eyes. "But you know, there's a lot of talk around the ship. Lara's real good a putting her ear to the ground."

"Of course." You sigh.

"And you know, people notice things." Amy shrugs. "The two of you seen together. Alone. A lot."

"Hardly proof." You point out. "Circumstantial at best."

"And then there's the part where she shows actual emotion when you're around." Amy continues.

"Really? She seems the same to me." You grunt.

"Aaaaaaaaand." Amy grins. "Just call it a girl's intuition!"

"Well then there's obviously nothing I can do about that." You say in mock surrender.

"I'm onto you." Amy narrows her eyes suspiciously. "One day, I'm gonna find-"

However, her monologue is quickly interrupted by a loud growling stomach.

"...shit." Amy's face turns pink.

"C'mon, kid." You laugh as you pat Amy on the shoulder. "Let's get you some grub."

I've been thinking. It's traditional for fighter planes to get some pin-up girl art. We should probably get Amy painted on for good luck.
