As the XO of Lafayette Girls Academy’s NATO team, you only saw it best to wake up before everyone else. Even Griselda wasn’t awake at this ungodly hour.

No. The reason you were up so early is because you were waiting on the call that your tanks were ready and had passed inspection. Unfortunately, the NATO Commission didn’t quite have enough aircraft to transport them all. And the US Government wouldn’t loan them any on such short notice. So they had to muster in some volunteers who did.

And those volunteers coming in to bring your tanks in on this makeshift runway that you stand on had arrived. The runway space cleared was massive. You could probably play ten games of football at the same time on the real estate they cleared. A pair of C-5 were coming in for landing now. And their massive jets almost deafened you when they came screeching in for landing. The massive jets had been brought in on loan from a High School who used the C-5s as cargo haulers for spare money for their Skycraft team. Normally you wouldn’t pay this much mind. But the logo on the side of the hulls told you everything.

Kill Devil Hills High School.

“When the call came out, we came running,” says Jack. “We already had the C-5s ready and fueled but we had to work doubletime to get everything loaded. I’m running on like 6 or 7 cups of coffee myself.”

You speak to him over a radio transmitter. “Thanks, Jack. We really appreciate this.”

“Ah, no worries. Just tell Griselda good luck for me, alright?”

“Will do,” you say. You blink, then ask something. “Is uh… is Jeep Jockey in there?”

“Aw, you miss him?”

“No! I just-“ You stomp your foot, stopping yourself. No, no. Just give a reasonable excuse. “I was just wondering since you came here. And I figured he-“

“Hey, Jock! Get up here!” Oh shit. “Ellie’s asking for you!” SHIT. “I think she wants to give you a reward for coming out here, hint hint.” NO. NO. GODDAMN IT. HE’S RUINING EVERYTHING. SHIT SHIT SHIT

“Hey, Ellie!” Jeep Jockey greets you jovially.

“Hi, Jock.” You state as simply as possible. “Listen, Jock. I appreciate you coming out here to help us. It really means a lot to us.”

“Ah, it’s nothing.”

“Nothing? You lit up my phone once the call came out,” says Jack.

“Well-… I mean, yeah. But we oughta help her out. She helped us, remember?”

“Yeah, she did. Hey, Ellie. Listen, good luck in your match, alright? We’ll be rooting for you!”

“Thanks, guys.” You watch as Tankery officials and mechanics start unloading your tanks. Ooooh boy. Looks like the tide is going to turn now.

You drink up a cup of coffee as you walk around the camp. Some people are already waking up by now. You could see the Survivalists are already breaking down their little tent. “Morning, Duchess,” you say. “Have a good sleep?”

Duchess blinks, confused. All the Survivalists look kind of weirded out by that. “Sleep? We didn’t go to sleep at all last night.” … really. “I find a nice healthy night of sleep deprivation is good for keeping the mind alert when you most need it!”

“… Duchess, go to bed,” you order. They all grumble, moving to put their tent back up. You sigh, continuing to walk around some more.

“Zumwalt-san.” You stop up, then turn to your right. There you find Arisu at a campfire, roasting a marshmallow. You step up to her, kneeling down beside her. “Are you ready for today’s match?” You nod. “I would assume so. If I haven’t already, I apologize if Mei’s attitude last night made you angry.”

“It’s fine.” You hug your legs, settling down next to her. “We’ll beat her today though and pay her back in kind.” Arisu nods. “You know, I would’ve figured that you two would’ve taken this opportunity to kiss and make up by now, Arisu.”

“There is much conflict between us,” she states simply, staring into the fire. “I would rather this match be as much about you two and your rivalry rather than have me throw a wrench into it and make it about myself.”

“It’s already more than just a rivalry, Arisu. She probably, no, she definitely knows that you’ve been training me too. I think what goes down today could decide what goes down between you two the next day.” Arisu nods slowly. She seems contemplative of that. “Listen, I-“

“Ellie!” Griselda calls out to you. “Big news for you.” She rubs her eyes a little, but seems quite energetic.

You stand up. “Oh, Griselda. I-“ You turn and see Arisu is already gone. Typical. Okay. You’re just going to give up on trying to get people introduced to her. “What’s up?”

Griselda says, “Flag match today. I just learned Mei is going to be the Flag tank.” Oh. That’s interesting. “And so are you.” Eh? “Your tank is going to be our flag tank for today’s match, Ellie.”

“What? Why?” you ask.

“Don’t ask me, ask the RNG that decides this,” Griselda says. She holds your arm, looking to you sternly. “Listen, I know you got something against Mei. I know you two have a rivalry you want to settle. But let me make this clear, Ellie. Do not fuck this up for us. We could win today.”

You nod. She doesn’t need to tell you this. “Of course. I won’t let you down.”

She points her finger in your face. “Ellie. Promise me. Do not make this about yourself. This is about the team. Okay?”

“I promise.” You hold Griselda’s hand, nodding to her. “Don’t worry about me, alright? Anything you need for the team, I’ll be there.”

Griselda frowns a little, then nods. “Alright. Sorry for-…” She sighs, rubbing her nose. “I should’ve figured.” She slaps your arm lightly. “Get breakfast and get ready. The match will start at 12 sharp. If you need any sleep. I would get it now.” You nod. “And one more thing, Ellie. Last night, you did great all things considered. I’m hoping for a repeat performance from you.”

“Thanks,” you say. “Hopefully this time we can beat Mei and her crew.”

Griselda shrugs. “I’ll be honest. This seems more like a pride thing than anything else. We’re both going to enter the playoffs regardless if we win or not.” She smirks a little. “Seems like everyone these days is fighting for pride.”

“Your sister call you?” you ask. Griselda shrugs again. She did. “What did she say?”

“She told me good luck. I said thanks. We both hung up,” she says. “We’re uh… I mean, she’s busy with her Student Council Stuff. So I at least get a bit of break from her but um. Yeah, we’ll do our best out there I’m sure. Let’s give my sister and everyone else here a good show.” She pats your shoulder, then walks away from you.

Right, what should you do now?

You decide the best thing to do for is to take a nap. You’re not going to take a nap at your tent for a few reasons. You look over at it. “Ah! Cuddles! Where were you!?” Winona hugs her pet snake. “I was so worried!” Cuddles flicks his tongue out idly.

“Eeughh!” Stack crawls out of the tent. “Winona! Can ya please stop letting Cuddles slither around in the tent! It feels like I’m being molested!”

Ingrid huffs, reading off on her phone. “With a body like yours, I’m surprised you haven’t been.”

“Hey! Yogi! Fuck off!” Stack shouts at Ingrid. “I’m tryin’ to get some damn sleep round here! Eugh!”

You decide to just rest back on a table bench, then shut your eyes. A simple nap for about a half hour should suffice.

“The match between Lafayette Girls Academy and Zhou Enlai School of Business and Economics shall commence!” You’re still a little sleepy. But you won’t dare show it in front of Griselda. And certainly not in front of Iris. Whereas at least Griselda was blinking some sleep out of her eyes and occasionally swaying from side to side, Iris looked as awake as she normally did. And you know for sure that she only got maybe four hours at least.

Still. It was time for the match to start. You could hear the cheering crowds now as you stood in front of the screen at the stage.

“This is a Flag Match!” yells the Judge. “The team that renders inoperable the other team’s flag tank, regardless of how many tanks are remaining, wins!” Griselda and Mei step up to each other, then shake hands. Griselda smiles politely.

Mei simply glares directly at you.

The flare shoots up into the sky, signaling the start of the match. “On the bounce, let’s go!”

With the sides switched now, it was time to get rolling. “Alright, Ellie. Here’s what I want you to do. I’m gonna leave you with Lyra, Elyse, and Dalia. You’re going to stay here at the start and we’ll move up to the town, got it? If you feel like you got an opportunity to do some damage though, that’s up to you. I’ll trust you not to get shot.”

The main risk is that they do the same thing to us we did to them yesterday. So, we should follow a little ways behind Gris and co so if they run into trouble on the rise we'll be able to quickly flank around North the way Mei did to us. Start predictable and safe, we want to convince them we used all the tricks we had up our sleeves yesterday and have been cowed into a more conventional go today now that we can rest on our more robust lineup.

You decide to stay a little ways behind Griselda for now. Although she told you to stay at the start, she does let you follow them relatively far back. One thing is for sure that Mei is definitely going to do the same thing you did yesterday. Hang back and let the other team come to them. And for them, it’ll work even with their weakness in slugging. They have the numbers, they have the armor, and they have the benefit of experience from yesterday. The only thing you can’t count on now is just wasting them down. Any tank that gets lost here is a tank that won’t be defending you to the end.

You now have to be cautious. And for once, you can’t just rush in and expect success. You will die if you throw yourself into the fight. And that will cost the team the match.

You lean back in the cupola, watching as best you can. You see smoke clouds in the horizon, probably from tanks moving out. You were just about to take the intersection north.

Go North to Wishkah, staying straight as Gris and the rest turn West to Nisson. Tell them to keep their heads on a swivel, and to watch the positions we'd taken yesterday. They're the best spots and Mei will probably defend from them or nearby.

>>2227581
Here's a google satellite view of the area. 500 meters north of Nisson is a road that leads to the Wildlife Recreation area, that road turns south into Wishkah. We should have an eye on that if ZES has any tanks running around Nisson that we lose track of. Could sneak up behind us. Or it could be us using a back road to link up with Gris-Gris.

Either way, Nisson and Wishkah aren't towns so much as local map points. Hardly two houses close enough to throw stones between them

You decide on going north to Wishkah. Griselda keeps moving down the road straight, then she and the rest of the tanks turn west. And from there, they stop and take positions. “Enemy spotted!” yells Griselda. Up there was at least three tanks, with only their turrets sticking out over the lip of the hill. However, once you get your binoculars out to get a closer look, they retreat further behind the hill. Hmph. “Looks like they’re waiting for us to get up there.”

You take another look upwards. You do see more smoke around the hill where you first established yourselves. It seems Mei really did have the same idea as you to take those positions. Interesting decision.

Iris says, “They’re waiting for us to rush in. If we try to crest that hill, we’ll be cut to pieces in a melee.”

“Aw come on!” yells Regina. “We can take those bastards! Naval Studies Rescue does not balk at challenges such as these!”

“You’re in an IS-2,” says Griselda. “You couldn’t brawl with a sheep, Regina. Pardon my bluntness. We’re going to have to maneuver around these guys if we want to advance further. If we get into a fight like last match, they’ll just overpower us with their numbers.”

> Remain where you are. Let Griselda do the work.

You decide to remain where you are for now. Lyra, Dalia, and Elyse tank up positions behind your tank, ready to dive in just in case. You lean back in the cupola hatch and look outwards with your binoculars.

“Alright, Iris, you stay here with Regina, Serafina, and Serina. Hadley you back them up, okay? Everyone else we’re going to move north and flank around.”

You watch as Iris and her group start setting themselves up in a basic line on the road. Mei’s tanks haven’t opened fire yet. Nor should yours either. Seems both sides are content on waiting for the proper moment to strike. Griselda calls out to you. “Ellie, we’re going to flank through the north and try to come down south. I’m hoping we can spread them out a little bit so that Iris can come across.”

“Are you sure?” you ask. “I don’t think we have the numbers for that.”

Griselda says, “Well, if you got a better idea, I’d like to hear it. Really, I would. I’m grasping at straws here.”

With all the tanks rallied up, you hear some cannon fire. You look back at the hill again, and find Mei’s Centurions opening up on Iris’ heavies out in the open. Large splashes of dirt but not much else. It seems it’s only meant to suppress them and keep them from coming up. Iris and company fire back with all due pleasure. “They’ve opened fire,” says Iris. “Griselda, you want me to stay here, right?”

“Yeah, keep those bastards busy,” Griselda states. “I don’t want anything coming out that way.”

“Copy that,” says Iris.

Stack grits her teeth. “Cowards, hiding behind a hill!”

“We did that last match, Stack,” says Ingrid.

“But we did it RIGHT!” Stack yells back.

“Ellie, if you’ve got no objections, I’m taking my team north to flank around,” Griselda says.

You sigh. You promised Griselda you’d not take any risks today. “Alright. We’ll stay here, Griselda.” You lean back in the hatch, holding your binoculars tight. Part of you really wants to show Mei the business. But at the same time, you promised Griselda that you wouldn’t make this about you.

Winona says, “Ellie.” You hunch down, looking to her. “Don’t worry yourself. I’ll make sure nobody gets us!” She gives you a thumbs up. Well. Okay then, you smile at her. You can count on her to be positive. But right now you’re hoping you don’t go mad from the inactivity. Worst case scenario, you could miss out on the entire battle.

Alas though, since you’re now staying here while Griselda and company start moving up to the north, you have to decide. What should you do?

You decide to do some camoing up rather than straight digging out a hole for the tank. You’d rather still have the mobility to escape a hairy situation rather than slug it out against superior numbers. A Flag Tank shouldn’t have to fight if things go right.

So you, Stack, Winona, and Ingrid busied yourselves getting tree branches and leaves to pile onto the tank. The camo net did well in also obscuring at least the silhouette of the tank itself. The only thing oyu couldn’t camo up was the flag itself. But at the very least, with a broken up silhouette, they’ll be hard pressed to figure out where to shoot.

“This is Iris. It looks like the Centurions are falling back,” she says. “They’ve stopped firing and they’re beginning to fall back now.” Really? You step up and stand up on your turret then look. She’s right. They’ve completely abandoned the crest of the hill. Judging by the smoke patterns, seems they’ve went northwards too. “Ellie. Shall I advance? If they’re moving back, Griselda’s going to have a harder time with her flank.”

If Mei is moving those tanks back, she has two things going on. One, she could be pulling them back because she anticipates a flank and wants to crush it as swiftly as possible. A defeat in detail so to speak. Another reason is maybe she wants to draw Iris in and eliminate her at close range. Regardless, you weren’t just going to sit around and let Mei work her plans and win.

You call out over the radio. “Move in, Iris. We’ll stay here.”

“Got it.” Iris waves forth her tanks and they start moving up. Iris wisely takes the middle position, with Regina leading front and Serina behind. Hadley takes up position in the rear. You wish Griselda had left Jane or Duchess behind to cover her. But you suppose her medium group needs some extra firepower. You take a breath, grimacing a little as you watch Iris move up.

But nothing happens. Iris makes it over without much fuss.

At least until you hear cannon fire again. “We’re taking fire,” says Iris calmly. “They’re on the hill. I count three tanks.” Oh. Great. “Those Centurions are moving north on the road I think, Griselda.” That’s about six tanks accounted for then.

“We still don’t see anything yet,” says Griselda. “I’ll have Jane and Duchess point down the road and leave Benny for support. Rest of us will stay behind them.” Hm… Mei hasn’t revealed her entire line up yet. What is she up to?

Something in your gut tells you to start moving around to support Griselda. You know she said not to risk yourself out there. But by God, you don’t want Griselda to be alone. She could get into some serious trouble. If her team gets wiped, that’s it.

Iris says, “We’re holding position here.” You hear some cracks and pops in the distance. Probably Iris and company skirmishing with Mei’s troops on the hill.

“Got it,” says Griselda. “I see those tanks you saw, Iris. They’re coming up towards us. I don’t see anything on the hillside so far but…” You hear some silence. “Oh shit! They’re behind us! Stop, stop!” Behind them!? You hear more loud pops and cracks as you come around north. Shit! Mei must have thought Griselda would’ve tried a wide flank! So she left a team further up the road! “Right, nuts to this! Go back, go back!”

“Ah, they’re shooting at us!” yells Jane. “That’s not fair! We’re in slower tanks than they are!”

“Get them! Get them!” yells Duchess. “They’ve surrounded us, now we can hit them in every direction!”

Hit and run, move to the high ground by the river/stream to Gris' East, open fire on the ZES tanks from their flank, opening an escape route for Gris and drawing their fire as they note out flaggedness, then disengage at speed back to the East, using the rest of our platoon to cover us and do the bulk of the fighting so we're at minimal risk of getting sniped.

Will Mei be in enough of a blood lust that she'd want the 1v1 duel? And if so would she have her team eliminate the rest of our team to make it easier for that end, or would she have her team pull back to avoid knocking Elodie out early?

>>2231725
Possibly. But not yet. I do expect Mei to lose it though...its a matter of time.

You speed up to the high ground near the stream and find Griselda and company embroiled in Centurions about to crush in on them. Okay, this is going to be insanely risky, but hopefully you’ll make it out. “Alright, Elyse, Lyra, Dalia. Open fire!” Your tanks fire away at the southern group of tanks. All misses unfortunately, you weren’t expecting much from this distance. They stop, then turn their turrets to you. Not to the group, but to you in particular. “Brace!” They fire at you in a coordinated volley. The shots explode and burst off the ground, spreading mud and dirt all over the place. You hold on for dear life as you start backing away out of there.

“There’s our exit, girls! Pop smoke!” orders Griselda. Griselda fires a smoke bomb, dousing the area in a cloud of blinding smoke. Her group starts exiting out while you cover them. Lyra’s Comet and Elyse’s Challenger keep up the fire before disengaging as well. The Centurions hopefully will either break their pursuit or get so overzealous chasing the flag tank that they overstep their bounds and get ambushed.

“Thanks, Ellie!” says Suvorov.

“Yeah, thanks for the assist!” Kathy calls out.

Griselda says, “Alright, that didn’t work! Are they chasing us though?”

“I can’t tell because of the smoke!” yells Duchess.

Move North to the high ground and set up a defensive position until we can rally, then Gris can sortie back out and push towards Iris.

Agreed. Much as I want to try and draw out Mei, they have their whole team still, at best it would draw out the non-flag ZES tanks.

> “Let’s get out of here and regroup!”

“Let’s get outta here!” Your tanks start rolling backwards to the north. Judging by the fact that you aren’t being shot at, they aren’t following you. Damn Mei’s cautiousness. She must know you’re out here. She could win this match in one fell swoop with one lucky shot! She’s right to be cautious but… you slam your fist on the hatch. Damn it! You could have her right now!

Your tanks assemble up to the north on some of the high ground. “This is Iris. I hate to be a bit of a spoilsport but I have decided to retreat and rally with you girls,” she states. “A lady knows not to overextend herself into a position where retreat back to allies is not possible.”

“Yes, yes.” Griselda seems on edge, probably from that failed pincer move. “Be careful, Iris. They might try and cut you off. They must know we’re here by now which means they’ll probably try and gather their strength to take us down all at once.”

Stack says, “This is boring! Why can’t we just throw ourselves at them!?”

“Flag tank,” Ingrid states.

“Eugh! Stupid flag tank rules!” Stack yells back.

Griselda says, “I don’t want to stay here long. Mei’s gonna get the bright idea to rush either Iris or ourselves while we’re split up.” You take another look at the smoke cloud that Griselda put down. Hm. Still nothing.

> Let Iris come to you. You’re staying here on the high ground.

You decide to hold up and wait for Iris to come to you. Worst case scenario, maybe they do decide to come out of the smoke. You’ll get side shots on them if they try to come and cut off Iris from joining you.

You lean back and wait. Then you see something in the smoke. You take up your binoculars and look out towards the smoke cloud. “Um. Griselda. How many tanks did you say were trying to close you off?”

“I dunno, about four or five?” she says uncertainly.

There was at least fifteen tanks coming in. With five of them splitting off to apparently cut off any hope of reinforcement from the east. That’s over a third of their force. And still no Mei in sight either. She must be hanging back. Hmph, coward. They fire a coordinated volley. You all brace for impact. The shots all splash and explode all around your tanks.

“Fuck!” yells Jane. “I wish I had some good tension music for this but SOMEONE took all my goddamn tapes!”

“Because you wouldn’t stop playing fucking HOLD THE LINE!” screams Pam.

Griselda says, “Enough! Get ready to fire back!”

“Stack, load AP! Let’s give them a good fight!” You can see several of the turrets towards you. Elyse and Lyra immediately interpose their tanks in front of yours. Their lives don’t matter, yours does.

Finally the fight’s on.
>>
