You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

After parting ways with Valentia and her father, you begin carrying Havel back to the Monastery. You couldn't very well just leave him out here, after all. Thankfully, there wasn't anybody else around to witness this slight against Havel's honor and image.

Well, almost.

"Dohoho." Ozen chuckles, apparently having slithered in out of nowhere. "I see not even Havel could keep himself out of trouble."

You give Ozen an inquisitive look. Was everything according to her plan?

"Why, everything is going swimmingly!" Ozen cackles. "The Elves are up in arms and howling for blood! With the forest gone, their claim to these lands begins to slip away. Sooner or later, they will have to act, and we will be there meet them!"

Ah yes, the typical strategy of provocation. Force the enemy to attack you first. It had several upsides in that you would have the defender's advantage if you knew the attack was coming, and it also put you in the moral right among the general populace. Nobody wanted to associated with the aggressor.

"Still... they will not attack the Monastery directly, not with all three of us present to defend its walls." Ozen adds, referring to herself, you, and Havel. "In order to make things complete, we'll have to make them think our defenses are weak."

You're starting to get the gist of what she was suggesting.

"How do you feel about going on another little adventure?" Ozen gives a sly grin. "Either the Elves try to make a move on the Monastery, or they show their hand in trying to ambush you. Either way, we get all the reason we need to strike back at them."

You nod, though a bit warily. It sounded like a plan.

"I of course will go my own way, to better uphold the illusion, though I will need to mask my movements from their eyes." Ozen adds. "It would be best for you, however, to do something flashy. Something that grabs public attention. Positive attention would be a side benefit."

You nod again.

COURIER: The treaty formally establishing the alliance between Eisenwand the the Black Templars must be delivered to the High Marshal. Ensure the safety of the courier until they reach the border.

MONSTER HUNT: A pair of Ogres have been seen marauding and raiding the outlying settlements. Perhaps it's time for a Champion to deal with them.

You give Ozen a confident nod. You already have an idea of what you could do. You recall an open Guild bounty on a pair of particularly large and aggressive ogres roaming the countryside.

"Excellent, excellent." Ozen chuckles darkly. "Here, let me help you with that, then."

Ozen reaches a single arm out and easily picks up Havel as if he were just a rag doll. Truly, her strength was absolutely inhuman.

"So where is this Morgan of yours?" Ozen continues as the two of you walk back to the Monastery together. "I feel she's been avoiding me whenever I'm around. I'm not THAT scary, am I?"

You point to Ozen and then make a show of flexing your arm, asking her how she came about her monster strength.

"Oh? You really want to know?" Ozen's mischievous smile grows ever wider. "Well, it's not something I talk about, especially to those who aren't worthy to know."

You tilt your head, wondering how you fit into that.

"Well, you proved to be an obedient and loyal Templar, so I suppose I can give this much." Ozen chuckles playfully. "This strength... I certainly was not born with it. It was something I gained much later in life."

You tilt your head the other way. Is that all she was going to say?

"If you want me to say more, then continue being obedient and loyal." Ozen's smile somehow still grows wider. "Or if you think you can best me in a duel, I may change my mind..."

You nod. A duel against a Marshal was quite the rare thing indeed. Not something you would easily give up.

"Oh? Quite the brave one you are, especially when you already know my deeds well." Ozen raises an eyebrow. "I have to say, I'm quite impressed, Templar."

Honestly, those words kind of flattered you.

"Ah, but what of the timing?" Ozen adds. "We could do it at the Monastery right now after we take care of Havel, or perhaps when you return from your quest?"

You shake your head. This was something you would have more time for after you came back from your quest.

"Ah yes, always duty before pleasure." Ozen nods, though you notice a glint in her eye. "Though, perhaps not always..."

You look at Ozen again. Did she know? Or was she just trying to bait you like she was wont to do? Regardless, you try not to give any response to that prod.

Thankfully, Ozen doesn't seem to press the issue any further. By that point, you've already reached the Monastery gates, where a pair of acolytes rush out.

"Marshal! Marshal!" They chirp. "We have a visitor!"

"Oh?" Ozen grins slyly. "Who could it possibly be...?"

"Oh, I see the Mages have decided to pay us a visit." Ozen coos when the both of you enter to see the Archmagus Elias standing in the entry hall. "As an ally or an enemy?"

"Neither." Elias' crimson eyes smolder. You got the impression that he was in a foul mood. Not only was the situation deteriorating, but the Monastery was currently full of the one of the things he had the most trouble dealing with. Children.

From every doorway and corner, you could spy the peeking, curious eyes of Ozen's acolytes. You could even catch sight of Nino, though her glare was less out of curiosity and more of childish mistrust.

"I was hoping to have a word with Havel." Elias explains. "Though it looks like his is... indisposed at the moment."

"Oh? Well, as a Templar of equal rank, I'll gladly hear what you have to say." Ozen smiles.

"I would rather not talk with an outsider who brashly barges her way into our politics and pretends she knows everything." Elias' eyes flare briefly.

"Oh? Those are quite harsh words to say." Ozen responds playfully, finally setting Havel down. A knot of her acolytes shuffle in and carry him away. "It's quite unwise to show disrespect to a Templar in their home, is it not?"

Your eyes dart to the side, where you see Morgan, Naru, and Niko also observing, ready to jump in if need be.

Well, no matter how appealing it might have been to see in action, you couldn't afford to have an Archmagus and Marshal start a battle right here in the middle of the Monastery, especially considering Elias was at least nominally friendly.

You stomp in, positioning yourself between Elias and Ozen before the situation could deteriorate any further. You glare at both of them, adults bickering like children.

"Ohoh, the Templar wants to take charge?" Ozen coos. "I suppose I can let this go if you're volunteering."

"That would be preferable." Elias nods in agreement, his eyes thankfully dimming to their usual dull glow.

Ozen makes her exit, sliding out of view like a wraith. It still unnerved you how such a large woman could move so quickly and quietly.

"Witch Hunters. I never liked them." Elias almost spits, or at least, that's what he would have done if he had a normal face.

Well, that was only natural. Witch Hunters' sole purpose was to hunt down rogue and dangerous mages. They all had a universal dislike of magic, after all.

"Regardless, I've come to relay a message from the Mage Council regarding the... situation." Elias pauses when he realizes quite a number of acolytes were still present, curiously peeking in. He sighs and snaps his fingers. Instantly, a shimmering invisible dome forms around the both of you.

"There, we can talk more freely." Elias notes. "Anyways, where was I? Ah yes, the Mage Council."

You nod.

"Their official position on this matter is that the Mages shall remain neutral in whatever conflict may arise from this event. Short of anything that directly threatens the safety of Eisenwand or any of the settlements under its direct control, we shall not intervene."

You nod at that. It was a perfectly understandable position for them to take, though a bit cowardly, in your opinion. The Elves had already proven they'd be willing to fight the Mages, considering what had happened in the recent past.

"I am aware of the... incidents in the past." Elias growls. "Unfortunately, we don't have much proof. At least not enough to convince the Council to mobilize."

You nod again. Not much he could do in his position, you suppose.

"Now, we probably won't be able to see each other again for quite some time." Elias sighs. "Considering the current climate, it would be bad for both of us for Mages and Templars to be seen together."

You nod. Very true.

"Which brings us to the next issue..." Elias turns his gaze to where Nino was. "I see Nino's magic potential has grown rather rapidly."

You shrug. She was half the reason people were calling you Ashwalker now.

"Do you think it's wise for a young girl like her to remain with you, considering what is happening right now?" Elias asks.

You don't get the feeling that he's accusing you of anything. More like some of that genuine mage curiosity.

You head over the storeroom, where you see Naru and a couple of acolytes taking inventory on the supplies. The storeroom was still very full, since it was always assumed the Monastery could be sieged at any time, so a full larder was a must.

"Auntie Naru! Auntie Naru!" One of the acolytes dashes up to the cleric, book in hand. "Are these numbers right?"

"Hm, well..." Naru frowns as her eyes scan the pages. "Yeah, looks like you did all the addition. Good job. And stop calling me Auntie."

"All right, Auntie Naru!" The acolyte salutes and dashes off to her next ask.

"Uuuuuuugggghhhhhh." Naru groans as she facepalms. She then realizes you're present. "Damn kinds won't stop calling me that. It's infuriating."

You put a hand on Naru's shoulder and ape a salute. It was just their way of showing respect.

"I realize that." Naru sighs. "Like, they regularly call Ozen 'Mom'. Like, how messed up is that? And how messed up is that they consider someone like me worthy of their respect when they revere that weirdo?"

You just shrug. You can't pretend to know their motivations. Though personally, considering the Templars' greatest source of recruits were orphans and unwanted children, you weren't surprised they'd cling to the first person who would show them any amount of kindness, even from a ruthless Templar like Ozen.

"It just feels weird." Naru sighs. "Anyways, you wanted to check up on the supplies?"

You nod.

"Well, the good news is that Havel didn't skimp on anything." Naru says, glancing at the record book in her hands. "The place is built above a well so water supply isn't an issue, and there's enough food supplies stocked to last for about three years. Well, maybe down to two with Ozen and her little entourage here."

So you were well prepared for a siege then.

"Still, that's assuming if we got sieged today, right now." Naru frowns. "But now with everything that's been happening, nobody wants to be seen doing business with us, so shipments from Eisenwand have pretty much dried up. What you see here is pretty much all we got at this point."

>Maybe we can convince the traders to change their minds.
>Perhaps we can reach out to the people in the settlements instead.
>We may have to forage to build up our stores.
>We still have plenty of time.

Well this situation is pretty fucked up.

We either compete with the locals in hunter/gathering, probably one side or the other starving; persuade people to give us supplies through force or offering protection, potentially creating bad relations or being overextended; or we can try talking to merchants who either want nothing to do with 'the losing side' or people willing to sell to both sides for a quick buck.

You point to the direction of the burned forest. Perhaps the settlements could help with the supply issue.

"Hmmmm, that's true." Naru nods, putting a hand to her chin. "It's the settlements that are feeding Eisenwand with the raw materials and crops it needs to survive. The city itself isn't necessarily self sufficient. If we can get the supplies straight from the source, that can work for us."

You give a thumbs up. Thankfully, it turned out there was a quest you planned to take that could help convince the settlers to help you out.

"Oh shit, I know that look." Naru frowns. "You want to quest? Now?"

You nod and motion to the surrounding room. Did she really want to stay in here longer than necessary?

"...you put up a good point there." Naru sighs. "Ain't making money just sitting here."

You pat Naru on the shoulder. That was the spirit.

"And this totally out of the pure desire to quest, right?" Naru asks. "No sort of underlying shady motive? Because that's my department."

You point to Naru's coin pouch. Her motives may be shady, but there was nothing underlying about them. She was pretty honest about that.

"Quit dodgin' the question." Naru rolls her eyes.

>No, just a regular old fashioned quest.

You pause and then ape having horns with your fingers, miming Ozen's appearance.

"Of course. Gonna go troll more Elves, huh?" Naru sighs. "Still, I guess it's better than sitting around."

You nod.

"Anyways, don't you have something better to do than wasting time in the storeroom?" Naru scowls. "Maybe keep an eye on the squirt for me, huh? With Ozen's little hellions back who knows what kinda trouble she'll get in with them."

You nod in agreement. Nino was... not the best type of girl to leave unsupervised for too long. You head out into the courtyard, where you suspect she might be...

You head up to the courtyard, where you see Nino stalking around the area, her head on the swivel and eyes darting to and fro. Almost as if she were looking for something.

However, as you continued to observe, it was then that you noticed some of the acolytes were trying to hide from Nino. Either she terrified them, or they were playing hide and seek. That honestly surprised you a little, but Nino seemed to be having fun with it as she played the part of the hunter.

"Okay, where are you aaaaalllll~." Nino says playfully as she skips through the courtyard. "You can't escape a Mage's gaze forever..."

That's when she moves up to your bush and parts the branches, expecting to find nothing, or even a huddling acolyte. Instead, she gets a faceful of your helmet.

"Eeeeek!" Nino yelps as she stumbles backwards. "H-hey, that's not funny!'

You bet to differ, that was pretty funny.

You must have inadvertently chortled or chuckled out loud, though, since Nino remained entranced and the other acolytes begin emerging from their hiding spots.

"Did... did he just laugh?"

"S-so he can really talk after all, right?"

"I'm so jealous I wanna be able to make him laugh, too..."

"Hey! He's MIIIIIINE!" Nino grunts. "No takies!"

You just pat Nino on the head. It was good to see she was getting along with the acolytes. It was good for her to deal with others closer to her own age for once.

"New idea!" One of the acolytes speaks up. "Let's play tag with the Templar! Whoever tags him wins!"

That's when you see dozens of pairs of little eyes focus on you.

This certainly wasn't good...
