You are William Pierce. You are also Will2Fight, the level 73 Foxtail Monk. Most important though, you are now the boyfriend of a nice girl named Saya, or as most know her, Paradigm, the level 68 Dwarf Enchanter. For the first time in your life, you have a girlfriend. At least you think you do? You both confessed to each-other, so that’s how it works, right? This is the first girlfriend(?) you have ever had, so you aren't too sure. Anyways, despite the oddness of your entire situation, you consider her the most important thing that has happened since you all got stuck here. Tasteless food, owning a bar, spooky levers, brainwashed landers, and impending death can all take a back seat. At least for now.

On the topic of Saya, today has been a bit crazy. To be honest, the entire last week has, but you are more focused on the moment. This morning, when you woke up after sleeping together(not that kind of sleeping together…), she was gone. Using your friend finder, you saw that she was out at the beacon to the south of town. Furthermore, when you looked around, many of the beacons had gone out. Naturally you did the first thing that came to mind and called DesertFox to help you rescue her. The two of you flew out and found her CCing a lander on top of the peak while possessed. The lander also seemed to be possessed, but probably by something else… You assume that the reason she was out there has something to do with the static causing lever she made, because the whole deal was fairly similar to what happened on the second morning you were in this world. After you broke her out of the trance and had a romantic moment, she passed out and while you were bringing her back to the house, she said(?) some stuff that more or less confirmed your suspicions.

"Morning Will." she says breaking you out of your reflections.

"Hey, are you feeling alright?"

"So it really wasn't just a dream?"

"Unfortunately, no."

"Well… It’s a bit scary, but I guess that ok…" she says blushing a bit. Now that you think of it, the whole situation sure does seem dream-like, at least if you dreamed about cheesy romance movie scenarios… Girls do though right?

"Do you have any idea what was going on while all that was happening?" you ask.
>>
>>2230899
"Not really, it was like that time with the lever. Its all kind of foggy."

"Do you remember what caused it?"

"Not really? I'm pretty sure I was just sleeping and then I was there."

"Hmm."

"Oh, I did have a bit of a weird dream though. Ari was there, she was saying something about chess."

"Hmmm. Oh well." Chess. That rings a bit of a bell. You think it does at least. Trying to think about anything involving that static just gives you a headache. "So what do you think we should do today, you feel up for some grinding?"

"Ohh?~ Are you finally taking some interest in my body~?" she says with a grin. "Perv."

"That’s the second time someone has made that joke since we got here… Also, like last time, I mean the other kind. Dungeon running."

"Yeh, I figured. I just like to mess with you a bit." She admitted it! This girl!

"I noticed." you deadpan.

"You don't mind too much, right?"

"Nah its fine. Its kinda fun. I wish I was better at wordplay though so I could shoot back."

"If you did, this relationship wouldn't be balanced at all."

"Whats that supposed to mean?"

"Because every time I make a good enough joke you respond by picking me up!~ Its basically cheating, if you could do both I wouldn't have a chance!"

"Want me to stop?" you say with a smirk.

"Only when we are in public!" she says cuddling up to your arm.

"I'll think about it."

"Really?"

"Yeh."

"Thanks."

"Alright. Done thinking."

"And the verdict?"

"Guilty." Wait, that doesn't make sense… "Uh, I mean nope. You get the idea…"

"Pfft."

"Yeh yeh, laugh it up."
"Thank you, I will."

"So, grinding?"

"Isn't it too soon? We just met like a week ago.~"

"Pfft." This time you laugh. Third time's the charm you guess.

"On a serious note though, its probably a good idea. though. After all this spooky shit, I would definitely feel better if I was a higher level."

"Alright, I'll call Hiro back." you say as you pull up your friend's list.

Ring… Ring..

"Yo. Judging by how quick you called back, either the town is doomed or you want to come level?"

"You are pretty perceptive." You say "Fortunately, this time it’s the second option, is it all right if Paradigm and I head out to meet up with you guys?"

"Sure. In fact, we were thinking about going to try killing some normal mobs outside of the barrier to the west. Want to try that out or just stick with the dungeon?"

[ ] "Sure, why not." Mobs to the west of the barrier should be around level 78-80 if you stay close enough.
[ ] "Lets just go with the dungeon for now." Paradigm is still only level 68 after-all…

Ask Hiro what the penalty on death is. Mobs should be fine - both of you should be experienced enough to avoid pulling aggro - but if the penalty is too huge you might want to play it safe regardless.
>>
>>2230958
The penalty for death in game was losing some exp and item durability then respawning in the cathedral in the last town you visited. Your brother confirmed that you still respawn in the cathedral like in the game.

If you die in PVP, you also lose any unequipped items in your inventory.

"Sure, why not. You guys are probably bored to tears killing that suicidal skeleton over and over."

"You're telling me. We could really use a change of pace."

"So, where should we meet you?"

"Head for the western beacon I guess? Take your time though, we still have to finish the run."

"Alright, invite us to the party chat?"

"Sure, one sec."
Click.

"Alright, Hiro and the others want to try killing some mobs out west of the barrier. Lets start heading out."

"Alright, but aren't the beacons in the west still out?"

Shit. You forgot. "Maybe the Morning Stars got them lit back up again by now." It has been roughly half a day, so there is a chance.

The party invite comes in as the you put on your gear and you accept it. You see Paradigm touch the air in front of her as she does the same.

The two of you head outside. No luck, the beacon is still out, as are several others.

"Bad news guys." you think over the chat. "The western beacons are still out."

"Oh yeh, I forgot about that. My bad." Hiro says. "Maybe we can kill some of the undead nearer to town then?"

"In a way, it kinda makes our lives easier, doesn’t it?" says Dank Tank

"I guess so, now we don't have to go over the mountains." replies Catler.

You didn't really think about that either. There are mountains in the way, and they are quite a bit taller than the southern one. You were never a big hiker back in real life, but at least it would probably be easier with your Monk body now.

"What if its not just low level mobs though?" Paradigm asks. That’s another good point. Apparently a raid boss came to oppose the 90s who went to relight it before, and now there has probably been a good amount more time since they went out.

"If we see any, we could probably just run away." you say.

"Plus we still respawn if we die." Hiro adds.

"Its still not really something I would particularly like to do again." Dank says.

"Wait, you died before?" You ask.

"Yeh, the first time we tried running the dungeon. We didn't realize how bad combat would be going in and got to the Golem before I ate it." he says "Honestly its not that bad, but it got rid of a third of a level of EXP and I had to walk all the way back, so I would rather avoid it."

Huh. Good to know.

"So what do you guys think?" Paradigm asks, "Want to go for it anyways?"

[ ] Nothing ventured nothing gained. Just try to fight some of the mobs on the mountain.
[ ] Actually, on second thought, if you just go do the Frozen Fortress, you will for sure be gaining exp…
[ ] Thinking about it, we should probably be trying to relight one of those fires instead of just doing whatever. Get a bigger party together to try and fight your way to a beacon.

"Why not. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?"

"Sounds like a plan, meet you guys at the east entrance of the city in half an hour." Hiro says.

"Alright, cool."

------

The group meets up at the eastern gate of the city and everyone starts heading towards the mountains on their mooses. Meese? Moosii? However you pluralize them… It looks like the <Northwest Front> guys have gained a few more levels since last time when you read the bars displayed above their heads.

[ <Northwest Front> Hiroshima Nagasaki Sorcerer Lv 78 Artillery Officer Lv 73 ]

[ <Northwest Front> 4Dank2Tank0 Guardian Lv 76, Border Patrol Lv 74 ]

[ <Northwest Front> Catler Druid Lv 77 Field Doctor Lv 75 ]

"Man, you guys have really been going at it." Paradigm says.

"Yeh, you guys have too, haven't you?" Catler makes a bad pun and Paradigm shoots him a dirty look.

"Ouch, that means I was right though, huh?" he asks. If she wasn't in your lap while you were riding a moose, Paradigm would probably kick him in the shin. That’s the impression her expression gives. She can dish it, but she just isn't any good at getting teased back.

"Not really." you say. "We haven't done anything like that…"

"But we are together now." Paradigm adds. So it is official then! Sweet.

"Oh? You weren't last time? Either way, congrats." Hiroshima says.

"Thanks." you say.

"What last time?" Paradigm asks.

"You were clinging onto him at the party a lot, so I thought you were already an item." Hiro says.

"Oh." she says while blushing.

"So, how far have you two gone?" Catler asks.

"How would it even work?" Dank Tank asks, "He's like twice her size."

"I picture a Hampster eating a bannana." Catler says.

"Hey, quit it guys. Its rude." says Hiro.

"Nothing wrong with some banter between friends, right?" Catler says.

Paradigm "Hmmph"s and crosses her arms. You ruffle her hair.

"Fine, fine…"

After a while, you reach the edge of the barrier. It is literally like night and day. A clear line of shadow denotes where the barrier ends and covers the face of the mountain that looms over you.

Not far off, you can already see undead.

Three [Cold Skeleton lv 81] s and 1 [Frostbite Archer lvl 84] are in a loose group about a hundred feet away. You outnumber them, but they outlevel any of you. Even so, they are just common mobs, so you should probably be able to beat them.

Looking at them closer, you are somewhat put off by their realism. Skeletons are one thing, but that zombie archer is really nasty looking. As much as you loved zombie movies, you have never seen an actual corpse, and here one is, shambling around with a bow. Its brownish-grey skin is tight against its bones, which stick out of it in several places. On its body are tattered remains of clothes covered in frost. Its stiff movements are awkward and creepy to watch. Overall, its revolting.

"Nasty." Paradigm says.

"Glad I don't have to touch them." Catler says.

As much as you don't really want to touch it either, this group is probably a decent first target.

Welp, Dank Tank doesn't seem to have any reservations. He rushes in and yells "Taunting Shout!". Blue green light surrounds him and the Archer, which turns to face the Guardian then shoots him and does some rather serious damage. Just over 1211 after his resistances, so probably around 2k or more base? That’s about as much as White death does, ands this is just a basic mob…

One of the skeletons hits him for another 531 damage.

Yup. These mobs are pretty strong.

You Activate your kung fu action by making a hand sign like a character from a certain anime that you prefer not to talk about, then use your Soul infusion. Your claws glow blue and you dash towards one of the level 81 skeletons. You rear your fist back and shout "Burning Hook!" while throwing a doubly-flaming punch into its ribcage. The skeleton ignites in orange fire and your oposite claw and its shadow slash against it again. You jump a foot or so into the air and activate Aerial Rave, dissapearing and popping up behind the skeleton with shadowless kick while a black shadow of your body is left behind. Your other leg crushes into its back and you flip off it.

With all that you only did about a sixth of its hp.

The skeleton turns to face you and attempts to whack you with its sword, but it only hits the shadow left by your kick. The third attempts to rectify the second's mistake, but it too fails as you slip under its blade.

Paradigm casts Mages howling and Hiro begins yelling.

Hiroshima unleashes his twin flaming arrows at the ranger and the area is bathed in fire. The ranger barely survives the impact of the second arrow, but quickly dies to the resulting inferno.

Catler shouts out "Heartbeat Healing!" and Dank Tank's health ticks back up a bit with a green glowing aura.

You, Dank Tank, and the three remaining skeletons take some damage as the inferno rages. They still have most of their health, with the one you damaged just a bit over 2/3 HP.

Since the one we attacked was only damaged by us and Hiro's persistent secondary effect, would it be correct to assume the AoE deals about one-sixth of a skeleton's HP per round?

If so, CC one of the skeletons in the area (with Grizzly Slam, probably) before backing out of the flames. If not, try to burst the damaged skeleton down.
>>
>>2231476

As one would expect, the three skeletons immediately turned towards Hiroshima and start rushing towards him.

Dank Tank, apparently used to being on fire by now, yells "Anchor Howl!!!" Blue green energy rushes out from him in a circle and the skeletons turn away from Hiro, moving back towards him again.

The first one stabs him with its sword for 620 damage, and the second crushes him on the head with its mace for 1314 damage. The one that you hit earlier moves towards him as well, but before it can attack, you shout "Grizzly Slam!" as you smash into it's side. It recoils from the blow and stops moving for a bit.
your other arm slams into it again for your Tiger auto attack. Your attacks deal 1927 in total, and you decide to jump out of the fire before you take too much damage.

Paradigm pelts it with her spam of Pulse Bullets and 4430 more damage falls off its bar, bringing it into the yellow.

Hiroshima casts Chain lightning twice dealing a solid 8391 damage to each of them, the inferno's damage keeps ticking away as well, and the two skeletons you haven't hit are down to a bit over half hp while the last one is at about a sixth.

Catler hits the same skeleton with a lightning bolt for another 4245 damage. Judging by its remaining health, it will probably die to the inferno and your Ki burn next turn.

Despite Dank tank's Anchor howl, Hiro's Chain lightning managed to take agro again and the three skeletons charge towards him. One hits him for 2199 damage, but because Dank Tank's Anchor Howl is still in effect, he leaps after it and brings his sword down on its head with the bonus attack, dealing 3821 damage. Pretty respectable for a full tank like him. The next skeleton attempts to attack Hiro as well, but Dank Tank blocks it with his Covering and takes 1078 damage. He retaliates again since the attack was aimed at Hiro and slashes through the second skeleton for 3653 damage.

You can do some pretty great damage as a guardian if you have someone who can pull agro from you in the few seconds Anchor Howl is still up…

Dank Tank attacks the first skeleton again shouting "Cross slash!" as he strikes it twice and deals another 2408 damage.

The third skeleton sucumbs to the inferno and bursts into bubbles, dropping some gold and a bunch of bones.

Not to be outdone by another tank, you run up and kick It into the air, then jump up after it. Using Aerial Rave, you fists fly into a fluffy of punches like something out of a shounen anime. To finish it up, you swing your leg down on its chest from above, sending it crashing hard enough to put a small crater in the frozen ground. You land on top of it with another kick for good measure. It is deep in the red now, and with the inferno, you are pretty sure it will die in only a few more seconds, so you just hold it there with your foot.

Hiroshima smacks the other skeleton with his Close Burst version of his Flare arrow combo and it dies and bursts into bubbles and a couple potions.

After a few more seconds, so does the one under your foot. It drops some more gold. You and Dank Tank retrieve the spoils and Hiro puts out the fire with some ice spells while Catler tops everyone back up to full health.

"Nice job guys." Paradigm says as you head over towards the back line. Looks like she leveled. 69 Enchanter. Heh. 69.

Childish humor aside, you do feel like you did a pretty good job. Sure they were just normal mobs, but they outleveled your party by a lot. And sure Hiroshima did most of the work, but your combo was fucking sweet. You are pretty happy with that.

>>2232041
Dual Fist lets you use a skill on cooldown for your major action, not use an extra major action. Sorry if that's worded badly, I'll fix it.
>>
>>2232055
Damn.

Well, at least Orion Delay Blow->Kung Fu Action->3x(Jump into the air->Minor Aerial Rave->Tiger Echo Fist)->(Jump into the air->Reaction Aerial Rave->Tiger Echo Fist) would still be valid, I think? At least, I would assume CD 0 means we can reuse a skill on the same round if we have the actions remaining.

Though I'm not sure how much damage exactly that would deal, given that free basic attacks from Tiger Stance might screw with our stacks.
>>
>>2232077
CD 0 means there is a 0 turn wait to use it again, aka its usable next round.
There are very few skills in the game that can be used twice in one turn normally.

You could use Aerial rave and Dual Blow to use a major skill twice in one round though. Dual blow takes it off CD. That would probably be fun with assassinate.

"That went pretty well." Hiroshima says.

"Yeh, you guys want to keep going?" Dank Tank asks.

"Sounds good to me." you say.

Everyone else seems to agree as well, so you look for some more mobs to kill. It doesn’t take long to find another group of undead. The light from Hiroshima's last fire seems to have attracted another group of three. You deal with them relatively easily as well. With that guy's damage, even mobs this much stronger than you are a piece of cake.

The party goes through groups of mobs one at a time for a while before you level up as well. It feels pretty good. You could swear you feel yourself getting stronger. You aren't sure how to describe the feeling exactly, but its pretty awesome. Sort of like a rush of adrenaline that goes through your entire body.

"Pretty good feeling, right?" Dank Tank says.

"Yeh. No wonder you guys do so much grinding." you joke.

"Its like the feeling of accomplishment from the game given physical form." Saya says. You think that is a pretty good description. You guess that’s one advantage of being a scrub, it kinda sucks that 90s wont get this experience. Oh well.

After a while Hiroshima levels up as well. "Sweet, finally. This is so much better xp than that stupid skeleton."

"Maybe we should just ask the Cowboys to leave this beacon out from now on?" Catler says.

"That idea may just be crazy enough to w-"

"Get us all killed." you interrupt Dank Tank. "Even if it is good exp, what happens if the other beacons go out?"

"True, but still, there are 6 more we have as a back up. Not like anyone is going to let that happen."

"5 beacons just went out literally this morning." you say. Now that you think about it, things got WAAAAAY too close for comfort there… Thanks spooky lever ghost.

"Fair point." he concedes.

Next to level is Paradigm again. 70 Enchanter. Now you can't tease her about it being 69 tonight... Oh well.

"I could get addicted to this feeling." she says.

"Try not to, you only got 20 more, and the last ones take forever." Hiro reminds her.

"Damn. Guess I'll have to stick to booze." she says.

"Speaking of which, we should probably swing by the bar later." you say.

"Yeh, make sure you bring some more beers, because they ran out." Dank Tank laments.

"Wait, what?" You literally left 2000 bottles there yesterday. "Are they out of just beer or everything?"

"Everything." Hiro answers. "Someone bought all the stock before it closed the other night."

2000 bottles of beer. Another 2000 of other liquors, and those were the more expensive ones…

"Shit, really? Looks like we're rich." That literally paid off the bar in one night and then some…

"Sweet." Saya says high fiving you.

"Maybe I should put a limit on how much one person can buy per day, its kinda unfair if they buy everything and other people cant drink."

"Might be a good idea. I'm sure people will understand why they ran out though."

"Hmm."

You all keep looking around for mobs to kill until you check the clock and see it is already 10 pm. When you agree its about time to finish, you split up the loot and gold.

Overall that was incredibly productive…
You gained a full two levels, and your split of the loot was 100k gold and a full inventory of mob drops.
Paradigm gained 3 levels and the same value of loot.
Hiro and Dank tank also both leveled.

>Enact booze limit. More than one-per, though; that's just inhumane.
We could float the idea of raising the booze limit for the day for people who complete the beacon quest, as a temporary way of encouraging that sort of thing. Should make OrbitalBlur happy, at least.

Double Assassinate feels strangely suboptimal without a way to rehide after the first one - unless someone else can hit us up with invisibility as a setup, of course - even though the burst when used with Kung Fu Action is actually huge.

You have literally no clue what it is. The main ingredient is as mysterious as the drink. Its a reward from bartending, and it is just a packet of something that you dump into any other brew to give it a 75% chance of making a double batch or a 25% chance of making "THE STUFF".

After you all agree that you have farmed enough for one evening, you head back to town and go your separate ways.

You and Saya stop by the AH before you head back to the house. You figure you might as well sell the mob loot and buy another brewing station to keep up with the demand faster. The line isn't so bad today thankfully, so you get to the kiosk in just a few minutes. While you are here, you also get a shitload more materials since you figure you will have several million gold waiting for you at the bar. With how many ingredients you have now, it would probably take you a day or so of continuous brewing to get through them all, even with all three stations going at once.

Looks like your girlfriend got some grinding materials as well. Maybe you should try that joke this time? Actually wait, you need someone else to say it first…

You mentally shrug in defeat and the two of you head on home.

"So, what are you making?" you ask her as you put some logs on the fire and light them with Burning Hook.

"Gear 4s." she answers, "Levers stop giving good exp after 35."

"So they are the Herb Tea of Engineering, huh?" Every skill has one of those kinds of items early on. Super cheap to make and basically useless, but they give better EXP than things ten levels higher. Herb tea was basically free since you could pick the herb infinitely in several different places fairly near banks.

"Basically." she answers "A bit more expensive, but people actually need them for higher leveled crafting."

"Makes sense. Can't have engineering without levers."

"Yeh, a lot of the low level items are just ingredients, that’s why so few people take the class. No good payoff until you are level 70+."

"Yeh, that would probably turn me off the skill. I liked brewer because it gave me good money for doing nothing. Bartending is amazingly convenient when you attend college and also have to work to pay for an apartment."

"I would bet." she says.

The two of you grind out for a while and eventually she heads off to bed.

Before you follow her, you go out to the Bar, drop off the several thousand drinks you made, and pick up your money. 3.7 million gold. Wow. That’s more than you have ever had at once. You can easily pay back Hiro now. While you are there, you tell the Landers that there is a new rule to make sure it lasts long enough. 50 drinks per person per day.

That might be a bit too lenient, but what the heck. Even if you die from alcohol poisoning you just respawn and hangovers are just another debuff apparently. This way, whoever wants to buy in bulk can still buy a couple day's worth of drinks or enough for a party or something and there will still be plenty for everyone else.

You also give each of the 6 landers working there 100k as a bonus since they are working so hard and you are rich now. Down to 2 million profit once you take out another 100k for the ingredients and 1 million for Hiro's loan, but that’s still huge.

You head back home a satisfied man and get in bed next to your girlfriend.
All in all, as freaky as it was, today was a good day.

[ ] End session.

2 more have been lit and the one that was running low had been refueled, but three of them are still dark. The east one, the west one, and the second furthest west one.

Woops, dropped trip going to my phone...

You heard enough people grumbling to get the gist of it, one of the wealthier 90s bought them all at around midnight. He wasn’t one of the big guilds or the production guilds, so it’s quite possible he just wanted to make sure he had a stash I the bar stopped selling. Several people seem to think he had the right idea all things considered. It’s not like a few million is all that much to a ninety. That’s less than a quarter of the price of most phantasmals.

In general, your employees seem to be relatively neutral to you before today. Most Landers don’t seem quite sure how to act around adventurers as far as you can tell. The closest parallel that you can really imagine is like if every weapon in America came to life and started acting like people. Adventurers are volatile and scary, and in that analogy, 90s would basically be sentient nukes.

In short, you could try to use a live linux to either boot on the broken laptop (if it's not too badly broken) or put the HDD into the new one and copy the data you need to an external storage, if this helps somehow.
Or get an adaptor so you can use the old hard drive as some kind of external HDD

The darkness is fading.

The dawn is coming again.

A man made of static stands on seven peaks wreathed in fire and congratulates you.

You have been through alot in the past week and he apologizes for forcing your involvement.

Despite everything, you feel that that isn’t quite right…
He did basically save everyone here after all… Right?

You try to thank him for his help, but you can’t form the words. Somehow you can feel that he understood though.

He shakes his head.

The static outline carved into your mind does not move, but you can plainly understand that he has done so.
The man does not want your thanks.

After all, there is so much left to do.

The game has just begun.
This has only been his first move.
Each of the enemy’s pieces still remain in play.
The game is far from won.
It is not time to thank him.
Perhaps it never will be.
Either way, you are sure of one thing:

You are not finished yet.

Static fills your vision as the image fades away.

You wake up in a cold sweat. Your heart is pounding like a jackhammer. You quickly look around and take stock of the room.
>>
>>2238424
What you see gives you immense relief.

Paradigm is still there. Thank god. Her breathing is quiet as she sleeps soundly besides you. Her body is wrapped around your tail. It’s warm and comfortable. Her face is outlined in the twilight that filters in through the blinds on the window. Maybe it’s partially just because she is there, but the light definitely seems brighter than it was yesterday. As fragile as you know it is, it fills you with a sense of safety.

You sit up in bed. Your movement causes Paradigm to shift slightly in her sleep, but she doesn’t wake up. You check your menu’s clock. Its 8:32 am, fairly early here, but based on Massachusetts time its already well after noon. Its weird getting used to a new sleep schedule so easily, but maybe it is just because this body is already used to it?

Who knows.

Speaking of which, there are still a lot of things you don’t know. It has been a week since you got stuck here now. Thinking about everything, you sure do adapt fast… Its probably because of your lifestyle for the past several years. So many big changes have happened that making the transition feels almost natural. Part of you probably still hasn’t accepted the fact that this is all real. That's ok though, you can just keep running from that part of you. You had to leave it behind a long time ago when your parents kicked you out.

After all, what kind of kid wants to believe their parents would abandon them?

You force the thought out of your mind. The past is the past. Maybe someday you will come to terms with it, but you doubt it. Either way, you aren’t the same kid who failed out of college.

You aren’t the same person you were back then.
You are so much stronger.
You are an entirely new you.

Literally.

You are living in a new world. With a new body and new powers. Your new girlfriend is quietly sleeping besides you in your new house.

Today is a new day.

What do you want to do with it?

Looking at the girl laying next to you makes the decision easy.

Her presence puts your jackhammering heart more at ease, but at the same time makes it want to beat faster.

You lay back down and pull the covers that you had knocked away in your sleeping panic back onto yourself. The cold Alaskan morning air on your face makes your bed feel so much more comfortable, especially with the warm body next to you. Your Bully Moose set is nice and warm when you wear it, but it can’t beat this.

Speaking of gear, you are thankful that you are a packrat…
Your old Robes of The Enduring Order are the closest thing you have to pajamas, and you are pretty sure you aren’t anywhere near the point where wearing nothing would be appropriate. Sure, you have the normal clothes from your character model, but they are more like something you wear during the day. It’s just not comfortable wearing them in bed.

You seriously wish this world had underpants. I mean, come on, that’s just plain inconvenient! It must really suck to be a guardian.

You wonder why you always think off on weird tangents like this…

Bringing yourself back to reality again, you turn over onto your side to face towards Paradigm. In the process, your tail is pulled from her grasp, you forgot about that… She grabs onto the next nearest thing in her sleep.

Namely, you.

It’s a pretty nice feeling, but when you think about it, how did you two end up sleeping together so quick?

To be fair, it’s definitely due to the situation, but the romanticist in you feels like it is still too early.
That should be like a month or so into a relationship, shouldn’t it?

Then again, kids these days aren’t as set in the old ways as you are. Classic fantasy and sci fi and the high ideals that came with them were mixed with a christian upbringing and high tier autism in your childhood, so your view of relationships might be the one whose is warped. Having thought that out, it actually seems much more likely to be the case...

At least its warped in a positive way you guess. You don’t like to admit it to people, but above all you want to experience a pure and wholesome love rather than the type of “dating” all your friends IRL did. Somehow you always felt like that ideal was surprisingly common among channers, but maybe it was just you looking for something of yourself to relate to in a sea of anons.

Either way, you put your arm around her and hug her gently. That’s what feels right in the end, so who are you to argue with yourself or society about it?

As you do so, she wakes up. Woops. You guess you were moving around too much.

You go to move it away, but she stops you. “Hey, where do you think you are going buddy?”

“Sorry, I thought it woke you up…”

“Just because it did doesn't mean I want you to stop it.” she complains drowsily. “I’m already awake, so all that will do is make me awake and not hugged.”

You guess you can't fault that logic... “Alright, that works for me.” you say putting your arm back in place.

“Thank you kindly. Now sit still while I go back to sleep.” she says snuggling up to you a bit more.

After a while, her breathing evens back out, and you guess that means she went back to sleep.

Welp, looks like you are gonna be here for a while until she decides to wake up.

Not that you mind…

You aren't really tired, so you figure you might as well think about some stuff while you are stuck.

The only question you can immediately think of is what you should think about?

There are way too many things to think and you only have one brain.

As you lay there a near endless list of possible questions flows through your mind. Some noticeably more important than others, but equally mysterious.

You settle on wondering what would cause a lander to try to sabotage the beacons.

Running through things, he was probably under some sort of mind control. The crazy eyes, refusal(or inability?) to speak, and the fact that he did something that would have gotten him and everyone he knows killed make a fairly strong case for that.

So what was mind controlling him?

Probably not a player. They would be just as susceptible to the everyone dying part, and you doubt anyone would want that. Even the PKers probably wouldn’t want that.

Actually, on second thought, it may be a possibility... It would be the ultimate dick move, and there are some people who might go for that. “The man who trolled several thousand people to death.” Their name would go down in legend!

Even so though, you don’t know of any way someone would be able to mind control a Lander. The closest thing you can think of is False Life, a Medicine Man spell that revives a player as a zombie directed by the player but with their skills under control of the AI for a minute. Thats unlikely though, if it were that, it would be obvious considering their HP would be 0.

Maybe it’s one of the subclasses? Courtesan is a thing. And foxtails gain a persuasion bonus in some quests that is flavored as magic.
Maybe someone figured out how to do that for real like you did with brewing?

Or more likely, it’s not a player at all. The much more obvious thing would be monsters considering they are apparently alive, but you don’t think there are any monsters around here that can use mind control. You aren’t really sure about the undead up north, but their magic shouldn’t be able to do anything past the barrier.
>>
>>2239090
It could also be an evil NPC, if there are more landers now, maybe there are more of the evil NPCs from quest lines? Speaking of which, how does that even work now? Who counts as having defeated them? Does it even count?

Maybe someone will have to go clear the Cult of Bones out again. It’s only a level 68 quest for solo players, and they were all incompetent (nearly to the point of comedy) in the story, but who knows if they will be a threat now that they are real(if they aren’t already dead)? Even if they are real though, they didn’t have any mind controllers...

So when you think about it, your choices are pretty much either its a player, a really long range monster/npc from somewhere else like the static man but evil, a new NPC here, a new monster here, or something completely else that you haven’t thought of.

This really only raises new questions. You will have to deal with this later.

On the topic of new questions, you start looking for something else to think about now that you more or less finished that line of thought.

How much are the bosses and NPCs actually capable of?
What (or who?) exactly is the static?
Why are you all stuck in the game?
How many miles would you have to travel to get out of this town? Do you even want to leave?
What should you do with the secret of brewing in the long term?
Can you make smoothies? You get a feeling you can when you think about that one...
Do landers actually have a sense of taste?
What sort of cool shit can people do with magic from the game?
Speaking of which, is magic just a thing now? Will people be able to make new spells if they learn the system? That would be cool. You aren’t actually a mage, so you put that aside and move on.
What about guilds? Should you join one?

You haven’t been in one since the one you were in, <Smash Brothers>, disbanded over a stupid argument between two people vying for the guild leader position.

Seeing the people who used to act like a family turn against each-other left a really bitter taste in your mouth, probably made worse because it reminded you too much of your parents. At the time it was a lot fresher of a wound than it feels like now, but the resentment never leaves. After that, you figured guilds were just too much drama and avoided them.

Getting stuck in another world might just be the spark you need to overcome that worry...
>>
>>2239106
On the subject of guilds, you kinda wonder what happened to the others that you had a decent relationship with. You were pretty sure you saw two of them were online right before everyone got stuck here.

You open up your menu and check. Yup, there they are.

[<Grand Junction> ShootToSkill Assassin 61 Blacksmith 90 Current Location: South Angel]
[<Northwest Front> SirDongus Cleric 90 Paladin 88 Current Location: Chasta]

ShootToSkill was mostly a skilling account, so you guess it made sense when he joined a production guild. He is probably pretty well off since he said they were generally good guys.
Plus he is in a fairly good place as far as the game goes. South Angel is basically a newbie town since it is from vanilla. The city is very large and popular with players, the enemies around it are some of the weakest in the game, and the climate is decent.

What interests you more though, in the past few weeks since you last talked to him, DongusMalongus seems to have joined <Northwest Front>. Also he changed his name. You guess it kinda fits, he’s the one who introduced you to 4chan, and he seems like the kind of guy who would fit in with /pol/’s meme-y-ness. Plus there are a bunch of the <Northwest Front> since their guild HQ is there according to Hiroshima. You guess he did it after everyone got stuck.

Maybe you should call one of them to see how they are doing?
Or maybe not… You haven't really interacted with them in a while and they are both far away.

Paradigm is still asleep, so you seem to have some more time.

You decide not to call them, at least for now…
You aren’t really sure what you would say even if you did.

It’s not like you are avoiding them or anything, its just that you aren’t the type of person to call up someone without having a real reason.

Instead, you decide it’s about time to wake up Paradigm so you two can get on with your day.

“Hey, wake up.” you say giving her a bit of a shake.

“I refuse.” comes the immediate answer. She was already awake…

“But aren’t you already awake right now?”

“Nope, I’m just a sleep talker.”

“That's not very convincing… Don’t you want to start your day?”

“Its too early for that, lets just lie around some more!~”

“So you admit it!”

“You can’t prove that.”

“Come on, it’s 10 am.”

“Yeh, 10 am Alaska time.” she whines.

“That doesn’t even make sense. It would be later in California...”

“I don’t want to wake up until at least noon.~”

“So you want to lie around for another hour?”

“No, I want to lie around for another two hours. It’s only 10 am~” she complains.

“Don’t you want to go do stuff?”

“What kind of productive member of society do you take me for? I played Elder Tale!”
She has a fair point.

“Should I just leave you here today?”

“That would defeat the entire point.” she says with a pout.

“So you just want to sit in bed with me for two hours?”

“Whoever said I just want to sit?~” she says with a voice full of >implications.

“What are you implying?!”

“I want to lie down.~ That's what beds are for dummy.” She bops you on the forehead.

Dammit, you totally walked into that.

“You can keep lying around here if you want.”

“But I want to lie around with you!~”

“Sorry, but if you want to hang out with me, it’s time to get up.”

“Meanie.” she pouts, ”What kind of boyfriend doesnt want to lie around all day with his girlfriend?”

“The kind who doesn’t want to be killed by endless hordes of skeletons.” you say.

“Alright," she sighs, "what are we doing to prepare for that today?”

“I figured I would go see if I can make soup.”

“What does that have to do with skeletons?”

“I don’t know, that just felt like a cool line to say at the time…”

“Ok, you get points for that, but your follow up is terrible!” No mercy.

“Yeh, I know. Either way, are you coming along?” you say getting out of bed and equipping your Bully Moose set.

“Only if you make me.~” she says teasingly while sticking her tounge out.

“I’ll take that as an invitation to do so then.” you say walking over to the opposite side of the bed and picking her up.

“Man, how do you do this every time? Don’t you get embarrassed?” She asks with a red face while you bring her through town in a princess carry. Several people stare at the two of you as you go.

You are actually incredibly embarrassed, but this is the only way you can win…
”Everyone’s stares are no match for my Asperger’s.” you claim defiantly.

“Curse you and your silly named version of autism!” she says in mock despair.

“Muahahaha! Nothing can pierce my armor of social ineptitude!” You say as you carry her back into the house.

“Why are we back here? Did you forget something?”

“Nope, actually we didn’t need to leave in the first place. I was going to try brewing, remember?”

“So you did that just to screw with me?”

“Yeh, it was pretty good, right?” you say putting her down on the bed in the makeshift workshop.

“Yeh. Reeeal funny Will.” she says puffing up her cheeks.

“I felt like I had to get you back for that last comment.”

“What, did you want to do something more than just lie around?~” she attempts to seize the initiative again.

“Not gonna answer that, but maybe.” you deflect.

“Isn’t that an answer?”

“Who knows? Is it?” you say.

“Now you are just being difficult!” she whines.

“Sorry, sorry.” You pet her head a bit to apologize. If all the anime you have watched has taught you anything, it's that headpatting is always the solution.

“I know what you are doing dammit!” she complains “Don’t think petting me will make it better!”

“It won’t?”

Anime was a lie!

“No, it totally will, just don't think it!” She says before equipping her staff and bonking you with it.

“Fine, you win. I won’t think it. I’m just gonna keep doing it to mess with you.” True to your word, you continue petting her for a bit. Untrue to your word, you are pretty sure it is working.

Anime wasn’t a lie after all. Your worldview remains intact. You breathe a sigh of relief.
>>

No, it was definitely a lie. She's only happy because her hand is in your pants!

“Weren’t you gonna try to make soup?”

Oh yeah. You got too caught up in it that you almost forgot…

“Thanks for reminding me.”

“As much as I am enjoying you messing with me, I was pretty sure you wanted to be productive today, right?”

“Yeh. Be right back.”

“I’ll be here.” she says lying down on the bed. You guess both of you can accomplish your goals now that you think about it…

You go back to your room to get some ingredients out of your chest.

Raw Chicken, tomatoes, milk, various fruits, water, flour, potatoes, and a bunch of other stuff.

Now that you think about it, you have literally no idea how to make soup from scratch…

You guess you will try to make a smoothie first. That seems easy enough.

Noticeably, despite understanding that you can make it, you don't feel like your subclass is telling you what to do like you did with the beer. It must be because this wasn't in the game...

You take out a couple of snowballs and put them in a cocktail shaker, then juice some oranges in a separate cup. You mix some milk into the orange juice to go for a creamsicle flavor then add a bit of vanilla. It’s a bit too strong, but you feel like you are on track, so you water it down a bit then pour it over the snowballs.

To finish it off, you shake it together for a few minutes until you get the feeling it is good enough.

“Want the first taste?” you offer.

“Sure.” Saya says and holds out her hand.

You give her the shaker and she takes a sip out of it.

“So, does it taste like an Orange Julius?” you ask hopefully.

“A what?” Oh. That’s depressing. If you ever get back to the real world, you will have to take her to get one...

“A creamsicle smoothie more or less.”

“Oh, in that case, yes. Good job.” she hands you back the shaker so you can try it then gives you a thumbs up.

It’s pretty good. Maybe not the perfect imitation you were hoping for, but for your first try, it’s definitely going in the right direction. You feel like that is pretty important. This is the first moderately complex drink you have made that wasn’t part of the game. You silently congratulate yourself before pouring it into a couple of glasses and handing her one.

Now for challenge number two…You have all the ingredients and equipment you assume you will need laying out on the counter. Now you just have one problem...

How the hell do you make soup from scratch?

>>
>>2239714
Ok so I only have a rough understanding of soup but we cant take it too far or the system will think of it as cooking and fuck us.

We have to make a broth by boiling a bunch of bones in water and then using that bone water as the base to boil the other ingredients in adding them at various times to change how much they get cooked, put vegetables in too early and they become a soggy mess, put the meat in too late and it wont be cooked enough.

However this is straight up cooking so we basically have to work it that were making a kind of drink like a protein shake or a warm smoothie of sorts

Yeah you gotta boil bones and reduce it to make the stock which is the most flavorful part of chicken soup. Rosemary and sage are good chicken seasonings. And you can never go wrong with garlic.
Tomato soup would work pretty easily since it's basically just a crushed fruit and it's juice that you just heat up for a while, and then puree it after adding onions and garlic and red pepper flakes

What if we used that dragonbreath emote thing as a way to heat the pan? Maybe we can trick the game into thinking we're not really cooking so the fact that we don't have the cooking skill won't matter.

“Any idea how to make chicken broth?” You ask Saya.

“I think you have to boil the bones or something to get the flavor.”

Alright, that might work… Boiling is something that brewers can definitely do, so maybe it will count.

You go into the kitchen area of the main room and set out your ingredients.

You attempt to de-bone the chicken…

This isn’t working very well, all you have done is made a mess. The majority of the bones are too much of a pain to get at.
You decide to settle for the easy bones to get to and just use the wing bones from several raw chickens instead.

You put them in a big iron pot, fill it with water, and put it on the fireplace. That will have to boil for a while you assume.

What else could you do...

You could also try tomato soup, that’s basically just juicing tomatoes and adding milk, stock, and a bit of flour, right?

You give it a shot without the stock for now, but within a minute after as you put the concoction on the fire next to the other pot, it begins turning into purple mush and starts stinking up the house. You forgot how bad that smelled…

“Ew.” Saya complains loudly from the other room.

You quickly remove the pot from the fire before it gets worse and dump it outside. It would appear that actual soup is a no-go.

“Hmmm…” you hum to yourself in thought.
Some soups are made with alcohol, right? Maybe your brewer class will do something to help if you use that…

You attempt to make tomato soup again, but this time you add a generous amount of Vodka.
Surprisingly, it actually works. The rules for this seem a bit weird.

You taste it and it tastes like shit regardless of the fact that it worked. The balance is completely off and it mostly tastes like vodka and over cooked spaghetti sauce. Maybe if you actually knew how to make tomato soup, it would work though. You will put that idea on the mental back burner.

Thinking of other alcohol soups you could try, the only one you actually know is bisque and you have literally no clue what to do for that.

You decide to put that aside for now as well and check on the chicken stock.

You take a bit of it out with a spoon and after waiting a bit for it to cool, it more or less just tastes like water. Just to make sure, you get several more chickens worth of wing bones and toss them in.

Eventually Saya comes out of the workshop and sits on the couch near the fireplace.

“Any luck?”

“Depends what you call luck.”

“I don’t know, not horrible failure I guess?”

“Yeh, I have had some of that.”

“Well that’s good.” she says encouragingly.

“Thanks, want to try it?”

“Sure, why not.” You give her a spoonful of the concoction you have dubbed “tomato attempt 2”.

“Is this supposed to be tomato soup?” she asks looking hesitantly at the spoon. “I don’t think it’s supposed to be this lumpy or smell like alcohol so much.”

“I don’t either.” you admit “But it didn’t turn into purple mush, so that’s good.”

“Welp. Fuck it. If it’s bad, we can just consider it even because that smoothie was great.”

“You don’t actually have to eat it, it’s just a proof of concept. It’s not very good, trust me.”

“Yeh. Having looked at it and smelled it, I will take your word on that one.”

“How about the chicken broth?”

“It tasted like water last time, so it probably needs to wait a bit longer.”

You get a spoonful of it and show her, it’s still just clear, so either it takes a while or doesn’t work.

“Maybe something will happen if you try putting stuff in the brewing station.” she suggests.

Actually, you had thought of that, but when you were about to do it, you got a fairly bad feeling about them not belonging in there…

“Probably a bad idea. It’s easy enough to dump out pots and pans full of this purple shit, but I don’t know if I would even be able to get it out of a brewing station.”

“Good point, welp, if you need me for anything else, I will be back in the other room laying around.”

“Actually, I do need you for something.”

“Oh? What’s that?”

“Laying around.” you say sitting down on the couch and patting your lap.

“Hey buddy, what’s the big idea?”

“Chicken stock takes a while, right?”

“Yeh.”

“And it’s not like we can really go anywhere while it’s cooking here.”

“Alright, I think i’m following your logic.”

“So lets just lay around like you wanted until its ready. Best of both worlds.” you say.

“Now you are speaking my language!” she says laying her head down on your lap and stretching out on the couch.
You go back to petting her while she lays there looking at your face.

“I really lucked out.”

“How so?”

“How do you think dumbass?” she equips her staff in her hand and bonks you lightly on the head again before making it vanish back into her inventory.

You think you got the message. If she meant what you assume she did, you are glad you are doing a good job.
She grabs your free hand with hers and the two of you just sit around quietly for a while holding hands and waiting for the broth. It really fits what you think about when you picture the word “girlfriend”. Its pleasant.

Yep. This is a pretty good way to spend your afternoon.
