It’s the beach!

...You hate it. It’s hot as hell, and it feels like the sun is trying to roast you alive. Gods be damned, the ocean is awful too. There’s nothing out there but salty water and countless things that probably want to kill you.

“The air smells great!” Usagi says as she walks by. Of course she’s happy since she somehow convinced the entire class year to go with her during this small break to Nishishio.

“Ohohoho!” Yamikigo laughs, following behind while holding a swim tube around her waist, “Today, I will conquer the sea! Come on Kururi, let’s hurry!”

“Wait, don’t you need to change?!” Kururi says, walking quickly. Behind her, more classmates follow.

“The Empress of Darkness is always prepared; I’m wearing my swimsuit underneath!”

Sorai is lagging behind with a bag slung over a shoulder and holding a beach umbrella. He takes one look at you and says, “Lookin a little pale there.”

Right on cue, Kaori hands you your bag—rather, both of yours. “Here you go, thank you~” she says, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” you say, starting to walk away.

Past the parking lot, you can see the sidewalk giving way to sand, lining the beachside. The various stores and restaurants you can spot are humble.

“I think I’ll stay out of the water too,” she says, catching up.

“Eh? Didn’t you spend the entire weekend trying to find a swimsuit?”

“...The more I stare at it, the less I like it,” she says, grimacing as she looks away, “What’s with you, then? Sick?”

She looks at you slyly, as if she already knew the answer.

You say, “I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere.”

Kaori snorts, “Onii-sama, please.” Your skin crawls as she says that, and you wonder if you will ever get used to it.

The answer is no. Gods no.

“It’ll look great on you. Stop worrying about your swimsuit,” you say.

“You just want to see me in it, don’t you?” she says, sticking out her tongue. “Pervert.”

“No comment,” you reply.

“Aw, is that a no?” Kaori says, “That stings!”

“I said no comment!”

Suddenly, a voice calls out to you. “Kats, get over here!” What you see when you glance over is Usagi holding a volleyball. “Kaori, you too!” Sorai is setting up the net that’s besides her.

Kaori pulls you by your arm as she runs ahead, “Don’t spend the entire day doing nothing!”

For some inexplicable reason, you momentarily have a nightmare inducing flashback involving a large aquatic beast and beach sports.

“Yo, let’s go!” Sorai says, “You and me, let’s do this; we can’t lose!”

You guess you could join in.

“You’re right. Us together on a team on a team just wouldn’t be fair,” you say, “Come on, Kaori.”

“Mmm, okay,” she says, slightly unzipping her hoodie.

Sorai throws his hands in the air, “Aight man, aight!”

“What, am I not good enough for you?” Usagi says to Sorai, half-joking.

“Never said that!” he replies, “We definitely can’t lose now.”

“You mean you definitely can’t lose,” she says, “Okay, let’s do this. Powers are allowed!”

You reply, “Oh, you just wanted to play because of your cheat art, didn’t you?”

“Hehe, maybe.”

Sorai and Kaori look around, and then at each other. The latter says, “That’s a bit unfair.”

Sorai smirks, “Nah, actually I’m good.”

Kaori grumbles. “They’re so shameless.”

“Ready?” Usagi asks, and no objections, she serves the ball.

You kick off the ground using Perfect Pitch. sending yourself into the air and toward the volleyball. Winding a hand back, you prepare to smash it down.

There’s a faint fuzz as Sorai’s psi field washes over yours. Your psi locks up as his binds onto yours, and your attack suddenly stops. His damned art! You can still use your psi inside your body, but what good is that?

Still, you’re in the perfect position! You hit the ball, and it goes flying forward. Sorai jumps forward just in time to catch it with both of his hands, getting it away from the ground and back. Usagi steps into position and helps return it.

It goes back over to your side, but it’s way too slow. The ball goes over to Kaori’s side, and you watch as her eyes light up with cyan.

You try to say, “Hey, are you—”

She jumps into the air, and then she slams into the ball with her hand. It’s surprising it didn’t explode with the sheer strength she put into that hit. The ball zooms and strikes Sorai right in the face, and his head flies backwards to hit Usagi’s nose.

They both cry out as they hold their heads while lying down.

“O-oops,” Kaori says, “Sorry about that...”

Usagi says, “Forget it, no more psi! No more psi!”

Sorai grumbles, “I’m not playing with you guys again.”

“Hahaha~” Kaori says, half-laughing. "Perhaps I hit it too hard."

You guess the game’s already over.

“L-let’s do something else.” Usagi says.

Meanwhile, you’re rummaging through your bag after telling Usagi to come over. Carefully avoiding the compartment with Kaori’s swimsuit, you find some bandages. You look at her holding her nose while she tips her head backwards, wary of letting blood drip out. Instead, you hand her a wet wipe and tissues.

“Thanks,” she says, taking it.

“So what are you thinking of?”

“Oh, wait right here!” she says, running off.

Meanwhile, Sorai rubs his head as he walks over to Kaori. “Hey, lemme see you for a sec?”

“Eeh?” she says, “Nope, I think I’ll stay like this a little longer.” She hums, “I like feeling like this~”

Sorai points a finger to somewhere behind her. “Whoa, what’s that?!”

Kaori turns around, “Huh?” There’s nothing there, of course, and when she faces Sorai again, his finger pokes her in the center of her forehead. You watch him use his art as Kaori stumbles back, flinching.

“Ow!” she says, now back to normal, “Rude.”

“I’ll take that as a thanks,” he says.

Usagi appears again without warning, except she’s holding... a watermelon, and a wooden sword. “This!”

You and the other two look at her. You say, “Where... where did you get that?!”

“There’s a place selling watermelons there,” she says, pointing backwards, “And this is from Rin!” where she then lifts the sword.

“Uh...”

That is why you are currently being spun around, blindfolded by a towel, and standing dizzy while holding a wooden sword.

You feel the ground swirling and spinning, your feet trying to adjust to the uncomfortable illusion of the sands underneath you throwing you over and around as you try and attempt to smash the watermelon.

“It’s right in front of you! Go forward!” Usagi says.

“Your left! Your left!” Sorai shouts.

“Go a little to your right! You’re almost there!” Kaori adds. Where is she trying to make you walk, into the ocean?!

All these directions that contradict each other—your head is like a whirlpool. Where is the watermelon? Where is it?!

“Aaah!” You let out some kind of strange battlecry as you move forward, the only direction your malfunctioning brain can think to go, and you start swinging your sword around like your life depends on it.

A scream from your right!

You take a swing and hit air.

“Nekoyo!—” You take a swing. “Oof! What are you—”

It wasn’t a watermelon, but you can sense it!

You bring the sword down and smash it, feeling the damned thing split underneath your blow with a crack. You rip the towel off of your face and raise your hands in the air as you feel the glory of victory. Your target is in pieces, lying atop another towel to not get sand all over it.

“I did it!” you say, almost falling over. The sword is ripped out of your hand, and then when you look back, you see it hit you right on your head. “GAH!”

“You senseless idiot!” Rin says, rubbing his ribs. “Watch where you’re swinging it!” He then points it at Usagi, “And you! Don’t you use it to break watermelons!” He then storms off.

Sorai picks up a piece of the watermelon and bites into it. “Nice.”

As you eat a small piece, you look at the ocean again, remember the strange scream you heard. Sure enough, you see who it was and what happened.

Kururi’s tightly holding her chest to herself, the top half of her bikini clearly missing. Yamikigo’s looking around and in the water atop her swim tube. Kururi drops back into the water again, trying to hide her assets.

Sorai stands next to you, admiring the scenery. “Very nice.”

“Stop staring!” Kaori covers yours eyes with one hand and Sorai’s with another.

“Sorry,” you say.

“Okay,” Sorai adds.

“Turn away already, you two!” she says as she pulls both of your heads backwards.

You shout, “Stop that, I’m going to fall!” Your legs scrambling to tangle themselves up.

She lets go and pulls Usagi by the arm. “Yuu, let’s help her. Your art is helpful enough!”

“Oh, alright,” she says, heading into the water.

You watch them go off, and Yami go back onto the shore.

Sorai says, “I’m gonna get something to eat. Y’know, actual food.”

You nod, and sit down by your spoils of victory. The self-proclaimed empress stands up, staring at you. You point at the watermelon, “Help yourself.”

Instead, she says, “You! Help me conquer the deep waters!”

“I don’t wanna.”

“Fool! This isn’t a task that can be done with a single person alone!” she says, “You’re my partner, after all!”

“Watch what you’re saying! What ideas are you trying to give other people?!”

“Partner-in-crime!”

“That’s not better at all!”

She’s standing there, her prideful stance at complete odds with the giraffe swim tube.

You let the seconds tick on by as you think about it. Behind Yami, you see Kaori run back in a panic, having realized she needed to change into her swimsuit.

You sigh, and Yamikigo puffs up her cheeks.

“I’ll tame these vile waters before another maiden's purity is threatened!” you say. You don’t want to at all, but you’ll do it anyways! Yami lets out a cheer as you start cleaning up.

...

After short visit to the bathroom and a quick change, you stand in front of the sea in your swimming trunks. The wide, deep, blue sea. What an awful place! Why is it so salty?! The cursed water just clings to you!

Yet, you must conquer it!

“L-let’s go!” you say.

Yami looks at you. “...Huh? Katsuya, are you nervous?”

“Am not! I am perfectly fine!”

“...Do you know how to swim?!”

“I’m not the one with the tube!” you strike back.

“T-this is my armor!” she replies, “This is my aquatic battle regalia!”

“Let’s just go already!” you say, marching into the waters.

Wretched place! In what feels like an eternity, you find yourself keeping your head above water, your feet only slightly above the beach floor.

Wait, this might not be so bad—

Water splashes onto your face. “Hyaa!” Yami says as she splashes a handful of the demon liquid onto your face. “How dare you space out!”

“Oh yeah? Take this!” you say, squeezing your hands together and shooting water at her face.

It hits her right in the eyes. “Gyaaa!” she cries as she topples over in surprise. The water splashes as she falls in, and she quickly throws her arms back over her tube. “Y-you...!”

A short distance away, you hear Usagi. “I found it!” she shouts, lifting a black bikini top into the air.

“Don’t show it off!” Kururi cries.

“Bad swimmer?” you ask.

Yami replies, “How ridiculous! The Dark Dragon Empress would never be bad at swimming.” She kicks the water a little. “It’s just that this foe is particularly aggressive, and... I like to be equipped for the situation. Yes, that is correct!”

You feel the incoming tide lift you and her higher, before lowers you again. To your surprise, another one follows, one that’s almost as high as you are tall.

“Wha-“

The wave crashes down, throwing Yami off again as you resurface. When you look around, you find that there is yet another wave, and behind it, a large object that rises from the sea. Like a thinning curtain, water pours down like waterfalls, revealing what’s underneath: a sharp, pointed visage that resembles almost a giant shrimp’s head that quickly transitions a long, snake-like body.

Hey, it looks familiar.

“Leviathan!” someone cries out, and all hell breaks loose. Shouting and scrambling, people head for the shore.

Is this their equivalent of a shark attack? You look at the thing, noting that it almost half the size of the last one you saw. It’s like a little baby!

“Katsuya,” Yami cries out, “A smart ruler knows how to pick her battles, and I think this is one that shouldn’t be fought!” She starts paddling away, and you’re about to too, until a scream stops you!

“That voice!” you say.

Your eyes dart around, and you finally see Kaori being lifted into the air by... some kind of appendage that’s more like a tendril then a tentacle.

“Nooooo!” she cries out.

You see her awkward squirming and make a mental note to never let her live this down.

Your psi fires up, and you concentrate it. A small ball of light begins to form besides you, and when you can no longer hold it, you let it shoot forward—a Sunstrike toward the tendrils! It zooms into the sky and hits Kaori right in the face.

“AAH!”

“S-sorry!” you say, and you try to fire more shots. They all hit on the tendrils and do nothing. Suddenly, seven arrows join your single shots, firing from behind you. They strike their targets, but they’re all in vain as all they did was knock them around. None of the blows left a single scratch!

You hear Nanana say, “Welp, looks like I’m out.”

The leviathan lets out a low bellow. You see another wave coming as it thrashes in the water, but the appendage that comes underneath was faster than it. You notice it too slow, and it latches onto your legs.

Before you know it, you find yourself upside down in the air, all the blood rushing to your head.

“Oh crap—” you say, right before a tendril covers your mouth. You feel like you’ve been made into a spider’s meal as you feel what can only be described as "immensely discomforting".

You shouldn’t have gotten into the water.

You are Rin Ichigawa, and you are on vacation. You are currently beside President Minezaki on the beach in a secluded spot, and the two of you are viewing the spectacle that is the local wildlife.

“It’s, uh... loud, huh?” you say.

“Yup,” she replies.

The leviathan lets out another cry as it picks someone else up. The tendrils that it keeps waving are as lively as ever.

“Should I, y’know, do something?” you ask.

“Nope,” she replies.

“Someone might get hurt.”

“It’s being playful.”

“...”

“...”

The siren starts blaring, a sign that someone has finally bothered to alert everyone of the impending danger that anyone with a working pair of eyes or ears should have already noticed.

“President Minezaki,” you say.

“Please drop the ‘President’,” she replies.

“Minezaki,” you correct yourself.

“Yes, what is it, Rin?”

“What did you bring me here to talk about again?”

She puts a hand underneath her chin for a second. “It seems I’ve forgotten.”

“I see...”

“...”

“...”

For a brief moment, you think that it’d sure be nice to be a leviathan. You could spend all of your days doing nothing and worrying about nothing...

...No! You shouldn’t think like that! Those are bad thoughts, terrible thoughts!

Minezaki suddenly says, “Oh, I remember now!”

“Huh? What is it?”

“...I can’t tell you,” she says, “The moods ruined now.”

“I see...”

“...”

“...”

The sea monster lets out another cry. It drops a rather large appendage, making a huge splash.

You say, “I’m going to do something.”

“Please do.”

Nodding, you pick your wooden sword that was lying on the rockface nearby and start walking to the ocean.

You need to try and free the captured!

Stepping forward, you tighten your grip on your wooden sword.

Funneling all of your psi onto your vessel, you pour your psi into the tip of it. Imagining it as an extension of your body, you slash forward, tearing into time and space.

The gap between you and your target becomes nothing, and you step through—

“Katsuya?” you say, surprised.

The tendrils holding his legs release him and start to lash toward you. You swing at it in midair, but instead finding yourself thrown back instead, right into another swarm of appendages waiting for you.

It grabs you, making you drop your vessel onto the ground.

Aw, sh—

Your name is Leviathan Altair Circe Nyaa Coconaut Tee-Aych-Kay Fizzlebottoms Ruru Batoru Wawagami Mochi Au Lait Taigabird the fourth, heir to the frozen throne and child of the great lord of the Northern Seas.

You had been hosting a nice and proper tea party with your friends until your neighbors had started acting frustratingly rowdy. An hour had passed until you simply had enough, whereupon you had finally lost all patience and stormed into the beachfront.

The little humans were, of course, even louder now, but you decide that your father’s method of rule was indeed correct. If you terrify them enough, they will finally shut up, right and proper.

You proceed to then break out your best impression of the water eidolon Tide, flapping your multiple appendages as fearsome as possible.

Unpleasantly enough, you had touched one of the humans, their disgustingly dry yet oily skin contaminating your very flesh! Enraged, you grab them and throw them into the air, shaking them for good measure.

How dare they! If your father was here, he would have sundered this city already!

Look at this horrid mess; you already have three humans in your grasp, and they’re still playing that heavens awful sound they call “music”. It’s a single tone on repeat! This is no music! What good are their hideous, flappy ears?

“Shut up, all of you! Be quiet for once!” you shout.

Of course, their primitive minds can’t even begin to grasp what you’ve said. Instead, they’re all shouting even louder now.

Oh, how you hate humans.
Roll 1d100s.

Why, you ought to each these animals a lesson!

Your crest flushes, and your mouth antennas wriggle.

Leviathan Crest: Hidden Art

Dragon Crest

51*29*71*46*43 = 207707802 (Mediocre Success)

The world’s energy begins to flow in front of your scaly plume, gathering in a single spot. The concentration builds on and on.

“Your music,” you bellow, “is horrid! Let me sing you the song of my people!”

You begin oscillating your vocal folds in a distinct pattern, letting the shape of your glorious jaw transform the vibrations into beautiful music.

Ocean Dance: Song Art

Theme of the Northern Seas

47 (Complete Failure)

https://my.mixtape.moe/fohiif.mp3

The ball of energy begins to split at its seams, a sign that it has reached critical mass. Your crest falls back down, and you let go. A thousand beams break free, splashing onto the air, sea, and sky alike, and it flies forward. It explodes forth, transforming from light into a foul, sticky substance that proceeds to coat the beachside from one end to the other.

It is a thick rain, but not enough nearly enough to stop their music. The screaming seems to have now transformed into heavy groans of discomfort. That did the job well, you suppose.

“You better be quiet, or I’ll be coming back again!” you warn them all, blushing at your extremely poor vocal performance. Next time, you suppose.

You let go of the repulsive humans and begin to slither back into the sea, taking your tendrils with you. You make extra sure to shake them as you leave, trying to wash their oils off.

Never again.

Your name is Katsuya Nekoyo.

This is Usagi’s fault. This beach idea was all her’s. This is completely her fault.

You are currently coated in some kind of slime that doesn’t come off in the water. You’re not sure how to describe this.

You’re also sure you can’t get married now.

You’d say you’d want to take a hot shower, except you doubt it would even do anything at this point.

Gods,

[You hate Nishishio.]

Thanks for playing! Hope you all had fun with this little one-off thing.

Also! Bad news that’s also simultaneously good news at the same time that changes depending on how you look at it! The quest is ending soon. Like, really soon. I had fun, but I think with this thread, I’ve now written almost everything I wanted to. The story’s also been building up to this point, so in terms of a storytelling perspective, it’s a good place too. There just needs to be a few things that need to be established, but we’re pretty much entering the last arc of PAQ.

Hope you all will be there!

Comments, questions, criticism is welcome as always.

It's sad to hear this quest might be over soon it was really great but it's better than it dragging forever. Do you think you might ever do another season in the future. Or possibly a whole quest about Levi.

>Do you think you might ever do another season in the future
That's a talk for when the quest actually ends

>Or possibly a whole quest about Levi.
Maybe a one-shot

I'll be sad to see this go, but even so you've woven a truly charming quest that I've enjoyed every moment of. Here's hoping that Kats will have his day and shove a nat 100 right down the final boss' throat!
>>
>>2237091
It’s been an awesome ride. I trust your judgment about where the story should go and how long it should last. I’ve enjoyed all of them, Oni Slayer Quest, Eidolon Quest, and the murder mystery one-off as well, so I’m sure whatever you decide to do next will be great. Thanks for running! I had fun as always!
>>
>>2237106
>That's a talk for when the quest actually ends
Yeah I don't expect it in the near future but I think that there's a lot you can do with this setting and we're only 1st years so I hope we might see more of this quest one day.

>Maybe a one-shot
That would make me very happy

Since you asked, I'll type them out instead. The work feels exponential

Yuu Saki
Rin Ichigawa: “Kinda... maybe trustworthy?”
Hitomi Minezaki: “A mood maker.”
Denkiko Mita: “Pfft, he called her Usagi.”
Leviachan: [Angry Screeching]

Hitsujikaze Yukikata
Rin Ichigawa: “One of the Captain’s friends?”
Hitomi Minezaki: “She’s a good listener.”
Denkiko Mita: “Like an ice queen, except without all the good parts.”
Leviachan: [Extremely Angry Screeching]

Kururi Kururu
Rin Ichigawa: “The most suspicious hair.”
Hitomi Minezaki: “...If only I had someone like her for a VP.”
Denkiko Mita: “Booooobs.”
Leviachan: [Displeased Bellow]

Sorai Sotora
Rin Ichigawa: “What a slacker.”
Hitomi Minezaki: “...Who?”
Denkiko Mita: “His looks are his only redeeming quality.”
Leviahan: [Disgusted Gargle]

Rori Shiba
Rin Ichigawa: “I, uh... she looks like she can handle herself.”
Hitomi Minezaki: “Please don’t bully your underclassmen.”
Denkiko Mita: “Literally walking trouble.”
Leviachan: [Attentive Grunting]

Kaori Etou
Rin Ichigawa: “The type of person who would put others before herself.”
Hitomi Minezaki: “Her art is such a pain.”
Denkiko Mita: “See?! That’s a creep, not me!”
Leviachan: [Wild Thrashing]
>>
>>2256059
>Denkiko Mita: “Booooobs.”
Mita 10/10. Once again you never disappoint I didn't expect you to go through the effort to draw them that'd be overkill. I am curious what the "main 9" (I'll just call them that for convenience) think of them especially Mita and Levi. I'm not really interested in anybody other than the 4 I listed unless you want to do some characters from previous quests that might be fun
