Mei’s tanks form up into line. Fifteen tanks versus what was essentially your entire team. They fire another coordinated volley, again mostly splashing their hits all around you. But the impact of it certainly rattles everyone’s nerves. “Agh! Stupid mercs!” yells Patton.

Your tanks fire back in return. No shots land successfully. “Alright,” says Griselda. “Ellie. We gotta get you out of here. It doesn’t matter if we die. What matters is if you die.”

“I can’t just leave you guys here!” you yell.

Iris says, “We’re divided in two and Mei’s group is about to split us up. If she keeps us divided, she’ll pick us apart.” Agh, shit! You slam your fists on the hatch. “We have to get Elodie out of there to keep the match alive for us.”

“Nobody is gonna get past us!” screams Elyse. “NOBODY!” Okay, Elyse. Very nice that you’re showing so much enthusiasm but please.

To prevent an absolute massacre, maybe we can blind ZES tanks, even a little, to help cover our escape AND give Griselda's team a bit more breathing room.

I don't like to run from a fight, but as a flag tank we really can't take the risk. We have to hope Gris and Iris can pull things together themselves.

You try and spot out any ways out. You could go west. It’ll mean taking you into Mei’s territory and may even isolate yourself from any reinforcement but…

“Look out!” A shot bounces off of Elyse’s turret. She dived into protect you from a shot. “Agh! It rings! It sounds like someone just banged a drum in my ear!” The tanks are putting up a continuous volley, one tank fires, another tank fires, almost like a machine gun. However, to the east, you see five of them start to split off, just as Iris and her team starts coming into view.

“Iris, you got tanks coming in!” you shout. Iris responds to that by sniping one of the Centurions in the side.

> KO: MICHELLE RAYMOND (Centuiron Mk I) (ELITE)
> KILL CREDITED TO: IRIS BLACKBOURNE (Churchill IV “James”) (ELITE)

“First catch of the day,” says Iris calmly. “You don’t see Mei in there, do you?” No! If you did, you would’ve put everything down on her. Iris’ team starts folding down into the ZES flank. The remaining four tanks splitting off start to charge at them.

Right. Think, think. They couldn’t have possibly coordinated this by themselves. They’re good, but they’re also different people.

No. Mei is probably on that hill somewhere coordinating them. Now you’re sure of it! If you could snipe her, you could end this right here right now!

“Lyra, Dalia, you two go and flank west! Me and Elyse will stay here!”

“Got it!” says Lyra. “You follow me, Dalia! I’ll lead you to victory!”

“Ah great, a tryhard,” Dalia mutters.

Their tanks start rolling away as Elyse continues to keep her tank in front of your tank. A valiant effort, but it’s actually blocking your aim right now. Especially considering how tall her turret is and how long her hull is too. Mei’s tanks fire again. This time, a shot manages to nab Benny’s Panzer IV.

Iris’ heavies and the Centurions have clashed. A pair of Mei’s tanks leave the main line to support them. But Iris’ presence combined with the actual experience of your heavy tank teams are actually keeping them alive so far. But they’re not going to last long without support.

“Iris! Get over here!” you yell. “Let’s regroup! Elyse, go help Lyra and Dalia!”

Elyse says, “But Elodie! I can-“

“No buts, just go!” Hesitantly, they take their tank out of the way. Iris’ tanks disengage from the Centurions, popping some smoke to cover their retreat. One of the Centurions tries to stop them completely by getting in their way. That is met with a heavy HE shell from Regina’s IS-2. It goes flopping onto its side before tipping over and capsizing.

> KO: IRIS ALLEN (Centurion Mk I) (ELITE)

They form up on the left flank, then turn their hulls. Iris then proceeds to block you with her tank this time. Oh come on! Can’t you get a shot off at anything!?

And to make matters worse, Mei’s tanks start popping their smoke canisters. They turn in place, spreading the smoke around and adding dust to the cover. In just a minute, they’re completely obscured from view right in front of you. “Hold steady, they’re trying to use the smoke to close the distance!” yells Griselda.

Fine, if Iris wants to block your path, you’ll have to stay back and let her do the dirty work. Mei’s tanks arrive out of the smoke, near point blank. They open fire with one blast. Hadley and Suvorov’s tanks are immediately destroyed in the attack.

> KO: HADLEY CARVER (M36 Jackson “Pain Train”)

They close the distance, and immediately a brawl ensues. The defensive formation collapses as everyone starts fumbling around to try and get a shot in one something. Iris however continues to keep you safe from threats directly in front. You take out your binoculars and look out.

In the dying smoke you see Lyra, Dalia, and Elyse have turned around to squeeze Mei’s tanks from behind!

You lean back in your seat, watching and waiting. A Centurion makes its move, attempting to rush at you from the front. Iris turns her turret and fires at it. It slides to the right, aiming to take you in a modified Nishizumi hook. You simply back out and turn your gun. “Fire!” you yell. The shot slides right into their turret ring, with a loud pop coming from the hatch and from the engine block.

As this all happens though, you take a quick look at the map. Surely Mei isn’t thinking of throwing away almost her entire team like this. There’s got to be something ulterior to this. Is she trying to wear both teams down for a singular match between you two? Or is she working out a flank that you don’t know about? Well, either way that-

“Hey, hey! Elodie, on your left!” Griselda screams out to you. You turn around and see a pair of Centurions charging right in! Oh shit! Iris immediately drives her tank around to block their shots. They fire. One shot bounces, the other misses. Iris returns fire but misses as well. They form up in a single file line. Unless… what the-

Have Iris go forwards, essentially passing to our left-rear, drawing their attention or leaving their flank open as we accelerate forwards into a Zumwalt Hook. The violent acceleration will carry the Special'd tank forwards missing both of us, possible losing control as it tries to stay on target on our tank, then we Hook back in and either finish off the special-er or make them turn to bounce our attack, letting Iris achieve the killshot.

“Iris, move forward!” you yell. She moves her tank forward, passing you. You drive forwards as well. The Centurion behind blasts the Centurion in front with a blank, propelling it forward at high speed, shredding the mud and grass beneath it. But with your movement, it passes between you two like a string through a needle. You send the order to Josephina to pull the tank into one of your famous hooks, sending it sliding across the ground towards the rear tank. It tries to turn its turret on you, but no dice. You fire.

Despite some losses, the team seemed more or less intact. The fast tanks had survived, as had the heavies. That meant having numerical superiority over Mei for once now. Griselda says, “Alright. You decide to stay. “Lyra, Elyse, stay with me.” Their tanks come back to your side. You watch as Iris and Griselda form up into an ad hoc unit and start going down south towards that hill. That’s the most likely spot where Mei has set up. It’s probably where she was even supervising this battle from too. You sigh, leaning back in the hatch.

Stack pokes herself out of the loader’s hatch. “Ugh. More waiting around.”

“Relax,” you say. “We’re the Flag tank. We can’t rush into every engagement.”

Winona says, “Ellie’s right. Let’s just take the time to hydrate and eat up before we get smoked by Mei or something.” She looks up at you. “Sorry, Elli. I’m just saying, I think that’s inevitable at this point.”

“So do I,” you say. “I Just hope it doesn’t come at Griselda or Iris’ expense.” You take a look out at the hill.

God you hope Mei is up there. And that numbers are enough to win here.

A few hours had passed by now. Sure, you lost some time you could’ve spent digging in or anything. But right now you were busy just trying to entertain yourself while Griselda and Iris did the busywork. Mei had five tanks and you had just about twice her number by now. If she had intended on sneaking around to face you directly, then she has to contend with you and your bodyguard formed of Elyse and Lyra. They keep their tanks on either side of you, Lyra on the left, Elyse on the right. With Griselda up front on the hill, they didn’t need to cover that side. And behind you were hills that you knew Mei wasn’t in.

So right now, it was just watching and waiting.

Winona says, “I know we’re the Flag tank and everything. But you think that with Mei’s team destroyed, Griselda would let us get out there.”

“Oh, look who’s coming around now,” Stack says.

Winona shrugs, folding her arms as she leans on your thigh. “Just saying.”

“Winona, please don’t use my thighs as a pillow,” you ask.

“Mmm, but they’re so soft.” She gently kisses your thigh, making you yelp in response. “You’re getting fat.”

“WOULD YOU-“ You slam your fist on the hatch. Augh!

While you and the crew start digging yourself a fighting hole for the tank, you have to wonder this. Why would Mei throw away her entire team like that? Is she nuts? She can’t possibly have just allowed fifteen of her twenty tanks to just get pasted so easily. Something is bugging you about it. There’s just no logic to it, it doesn’t suit her. It’s almost if she’s trying to force the conflict on you.

Regardless, you wait for the next call. Ingrid pops out of her hatch as you all dig. “Ellie. Words of wisdom.” You walk up to her then take the radio from her.

“Ellie, it’s Griselda. We haven’t spotted anything up here,” says Griselda. “Mei isn’t on this hill. She’s gone completely missing.”

“Missing?” you say. “How?”

Iris says, “If we knew, we’d tell you. We’re trying to look for tracks right now. But she was definitely on this hill. We just can’t pinpoint where.”

You sigh, grimacing. Great. “Okay um… we’re digging in where we are now.”

Griselda says, “I’m gonna send Iris’ team to defend you. Something’s fishy about this.”

“Alright. Thank you,” you say. You lean on the side of the hull, sighing. Ingrid looks to you. “Yes, I’m bored.”

Ingrid says, “Hey. Think of it like this, Ellie. I think Mei’s gonna be steaming mad if she doesn’t get the last word in on you.”

“But the last word she got on me was killing our tank and winning a match,” you say.

“… well.” Ingrid shrugs. “Okay, you have a point.”

Winona sighs, hefting her shovel over her shoulder. “My back hurts…” She arches back, feeling some cracks and snaps in there. “Ow…”

Stack says, “Wimp!” She huffs, placing her shovel on the side of the turret. “Them Chinese mercs are a bunch of slackjawed faggots anyway. Only reason they won yesterday was because they had numbers on their side.” Josephina stands there, listening attentively. “Why, if it was one on one, Ellie would win every time! No question!”

“It was one on one last time,” you say.

“Not really,” says Winona. “That other tank threw itself in there.”

“Yeah but-“

“Ellie.” The radio barks once more. It’s Elyse. “Is that movement to the south near Wishkah?” You take your binoculars and look south.

Huh. You see some leaves rustling. Doesn’t feel windy. You don’t see many clouds either.

Put some HE into the area, try to flush them out.

I actually think it's likely this is just us getting bored and jumping at shadows,
I don't think Mei would've risked everything on this kind of move. More likely Gris is about to get to get jumped by Mei and her elite now that she's sent away her heavy elements.
>>
New theory

Mei is no longer in charge. There's been an uprising or she had bad sushi last night.

How far away is Iris from us? If she is pretty close just let her come to us, leaving a tank behind. It'll cover approach from Wishkah from another angle.
Maybe from the hill across from us.
If she is still far away, go to rally with her, leaving one of our tanks behind. Have that team try to build a decoy or two. Leave our log with them to help with this.

Yeah, if Mei's trying to come at us through Wishkah she's crazy. She's basically walking into being engaged from the front, flanked from the right and then flanked from the rear, in the hope that she can engage and defeat us before the rest of our team comes back around. Not a smart bet, given our last fight.

The left, I mean, flanked from her left. Our right I guess.

Everyone quickly gets back into their tanks. “Winona, put some HE down there! Lyra, Elyse, you too!” Your tanks fire a trio of HE shells down into the trees. They explode, scattering some trees apart and blowing more leaves into the air. Whole lot of nothing. Huh. Now that you think about it, it would’ve been stupid for Mei to throw away all of her tanks just to come up from a predictable route of advance like that. “Nothing,” you say.

Griselda says, “Yeah, I heard that, I didn’t know what-“ Her radio suddenly cuts out from an explosion.

> KO: GRISELDA POOL (M4A3E8 Sherman “Janus”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: MEI XIANG (Centurion Mk I “Shimada Special”) (LEGENDARY)

“Whoa!” yells Kathy. “Something just pasted Gri-“ Another explosion.

> KO: DALIA EARNHARDT (M18 Hellcat “Mifune”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: FREYA T. WARD (Centurion Mk I) (ELITE)

Well. Fuck.

Iris says, “That was Griselda’s entire team. They must’ve been ambushed.” And they’ll likely relocate after doing all that too. Well planned, Mei. Damn.

Mei's gonna ambush, we won't walk into that.

Perhaps we should consider a counter ambush

“Alright, if she’s going to camp away, so are you,” you say. And you’re certainly not going to budge. She’s the flag tank, she knows it. You see Iris’ tank come up now. Now that means you outnumber her and outgun her in a straight fight. If she wants to come to you, she’ll have to go through all of your bodyguards.

It’s not like she’s going to wait forever, right?

“Dinner time!” Everyone turned out of the hatches to eat up on some MREs and drink up from their canteens. Turns out she is willing to wait. You check your watch. Four hours in fact. You have to wonder if Commissioner Durocher ever has to face pace-of-play complaints. Still though. She hasn’t revealed herself. And why should she? She’s outnumbered, she’s outgunned, she knows it. She has no reason to throw herself against a position like this. This is another situation where again, the most patient person wins.

And your patience is already starting to wear thin.

Iris calls out to you on the radio. “It’s clear Mei isn’t going to come to us, Elodie. Should we try to move about and see if we can trip her ambush? The two of us together could overwhelm her.”

Split our force off from Iris' and cover her advance as she clears areas rinse and repeat process.
We need to slow down on the intuitions guys, 60 CP might seem like a lot but we'll go through it in a flash keeping up in a duel with Mei.

But we have to watch out for an ambush. Mei's not triggerhappy. She won't pop at the first tank she sees.

> “Let’s see where she is.”

You decide on a plan with Iris. She’ll start moving southwards. You’ll move down with her from a certain distance, keeping it in two separate teams between her heavies and your bodyguards. She’ll clear out areas, you’ll keep her covered in the meantime. You lean back in the hatch, grimacing a little. Come on, Mei. Where are you…

You move down south to Nisson. Iris keeps a single column formation, with all of her turrets pointing in different directions. You keep an eye out for anything, keeping about a kilometer behind her or so.

“Hold on…” You peer through your binoculars at the hill. You choose not to go up the hill considering Mei was supposed to have relocated from there after slaughtering Griselda’s team but…

That’s a gun barrel. That’s a Centurion!

Churchill isn't fast enough to get out of the way on its own, hopefully by blinding and disorienting the shooter we can spoil their first shot and keep Iris in the fight, though I doubt there's just one Cent up there.

What are the rules on bringing spare parts into a match?

If possible, could they have brought a spare gun barrel to trick us?
>>
>>2249791
You can bring as many spare parts as you can conceivably carry.

The question is why would you carry a spare gun barrel when a fake one would do just as good.

“Winona! Hit that gun!”

“Got it!” She fires away. The shot bounces off of something. Probably the turret top. The gun starts retreating back, pointing towards you. That is a tank! It starts retreating backwards. Damn it, you didn’t get a kill shot though! “Iris, watch out from the hill!”

“I saw it,” says Iris. “Thank you for the assist, Elodie.” You stop up your tank and allow Lyra and Elyse to move up further. Damn! You may have saved Iris back there. She stops up right at Nisson too, pointing her turrets uphill.

Stack says, “We know where they are now! Let’s get ‘em!”

“Easy, Stack. That was just one Centurion. It probably wasn’t even Mei either. They may have split up to keep us guessing,” you say. Stack grumbles, folding her arms angrily.

Iris says, “Should we pursue, Elodie?”

They were either a spotter or bait
>>

On the one hand, it's probably bait, on the other hand, it's obviously bait, and if I was Mei I'd have put it there to be obvious bait which a skilled commander like us would never fall for.
>>

> No, it’s just one tank.

“No, Iris. It’s just one tank. It’s probably bait.” It’s really obvious bait. Which stands to reason that Mei might’ve- no, you’re overthinking it. “Just ignore it and we’ll keep on the search. If it tries to pop out again, we’ll paste it.”

Iris says, “I can see why Mei got rid of all of her tanks. Five tanks in a map this big can really disappear.”

Ingrid sighs. “Keeping track of this shit is tough business that’s for sure.”

You sigh, grimacing. Seems Mei wants to drag this out even more, does she? Fine. You’re not going to keep falling for her tricks. She may have gotten to Griselda. But she won’t get to you. Not this time. You’ll beat her and then you’ll be done with this.

You sigh. You just hope it’ll be done sometime before nightfall.

Unfortunately, we'll have to end it relatively early tonight. I got work in the morning (hooray for being essential personnel in the middle of a government shutdown) and I'm told by my bosses that it's going to be fucking busy. So I'm gonna see about taking it easy. We'll see if I do quests or not this week, may or may not. Hope you all enjoyed regardless.

>>
>>2255847
I don't understand the format, where's the rolling and visuals of tanks?
>>
>>2255641
By voting on choices, making write-ins of plans and you know, playing it as you would any quest. Really this is a match thread, as are the couple before this one, so you can read them to get a sense of it if you're struggling.

>>2255881
The system isn't that granular, it's mostly narrative with no rolling to keep the action moving at a better pace to more effectively capture the feeling of GuP's tank fights as opposed to realistic armoured warfare. Though our very passive, cautious strategies this match have made it less so than usual.
>>
>>2255891
Don't they win in GuP by taking chances,
making mistakes, and getting messy?
>>
>>2255920
To an extent, but at their best they play smart and wait to pick their moment to take a risky option. Just gambling wildly from the start is how to get Chi-ha-tan.
>>
>>2255943
Speaking of Chi-ha-tan, how often do enemy teams get caught in ambushes?
>>
>>2255891
>it's mostly narrative with no rolling to keep the action moving at a better pace
So you're all guessing at the correct way to go in the QM's maze? How often do write-ins get rewarded as opposed to punished?
>>
>>2255948
It's certainly not uncommon if we lay a good trap, or it's a particularly reckless opponent, but the super obvious ploys generally get picked up by capable teams.

>>2255999
Usually write-ins that are well enough thought out to win votes are rewarded, I'm struggling to think of a time a bad one's gotten through and had us badly punished, though that's not to say they always work.
