Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls in secret. But now, with their existence revealed, a great cloud of change looms over Dark Gate Academy.

“625... 626...”

“What are you doing?” you raise your eyebrow as you note Roka's counting. You just entered the dorm lounge to see him standing by the couch, squatting with his hands behind his head, and the tv blaring.

“What's it look like?” Roka asks. “You never multi-task?”

“Huh, and here I figured you had a one-track mind,” you reply.

Roka grunts as he continues his squats. His face strains and squints. You can tell he lost count and doesn't want to admit.

“627.”

Roka grunts in acknowledgement, as the voice of the newscaster on tv blares.

“-And just about everyone is out tonight for the premiere of Red Mask: Rise of the Molemen! And I have to say that nobody is quite as well-dressed tonight as the star himself, King Thunder! The ever-eccentric Red Mask actor-”

“Hey, do me a solid?” Roka asks, nodding towards the tv remote on the couch. “Turn that bullshit off.”

You oblige, slightly confused by the request. “I thought you liked Red Mask.”

“I do,” Roka replies. “My dumbass cousin isn't Red Mask.”

“King Thunder's your cousin?” you ponder. “And your uncle voiced the original Red Mask. Your family likes to play superhero...”

“Yeah, and your family actually were superheroes, right?” Roka grumbles.

“Not what I was going to say,” you shrug. “But you're right.”

You let out a yawn as you make your way to the kitchen area and crack open an egg over the pan. “Besides, why watch tv when our school is gonna be on it soon?”

“Huh?” Roka raises an eyebrow.

You sigh. “Don't tell me you forgot. Wei, our principal? He's giving a big press conference in the school courtyard. If you get there before all the cameras, you'll probably be on the news.”

“Pass.”

As Roka continues his squats, the ever-graceful, ever-elegant Mayu strides into the room. She looks to you and gives a knowing nod, before moving towards you and taking a seat, her hands placed firmly on her lap as she sits in the upright position. “Kazuma, I have decided that today we should attend a... date.”

“Who's date?” you ask.

“O-ours...” Mayu replies sheepishly. “I suppose I did word it oddly...”

You smile. “Sure thing. Did... did you have any plans?”

Mayu shakes her head. “Not in particular. Perhaps... you might have a plan?”

You shrug. “Not... not really. Eh, I'm sure we'll work something out.”

“Would you look at this?” Roka notes. “The most powerful students in class, all in the same room.”

“Makoto is not present,” Mayu notes.

“He will be soon,” you reply. “We all saw the news yesterday. Another successful demon defeat.”

Roka grunts. “Agh, I'm tired of the upperclassmen getting their hands on all the big fish. I want to take down the next one!”

“I don't know, we were barely able to handle an archdemon's kid,” you note. “I'm fine with hanging back until we're stronger.”

“With that attitude you'll never be stronger!” Roka yells.

Mayu nods. “He does make a point. To increase power it is vital to push your limits beyond what you believe them to be. Hmm... perhaps our date should be based in training-”

“We already trained this morning!” you point out. “We finished twenty minutes ago!”

“Oh... right,” Mayu replies. “Sorry.”

You shake your head and chuckle, as your phone begins to go off in your pants pocket.

“Is your ringtone the Star Wars theme?” Roka asks.

“None of your business!” you reply, pulling the phone from your pocket. Oh, it's just a text. From Ryoji, stating that he's arriving at the school gate. “Huh... looks like Makoto will be present sooner than we thought. Wanna go meet them?”

“Eggs,” Mayu points out, as you realise you've burned your breakfast. Great job, Kazuma.

After breakfast, you and Mayu make your way down to the school gates. You're not surprised that your first welcome is a flying hug from Mio. Surprised, you barely manage to catch your friend without falling over, as you spin her around before planting Mio back on her feet.

“Oh, you should have been there Kaz!” Mio gushes in an excited tone. “What a thrilling adventure!”

“I'm just glad everyone's okay,” you reply.

Ryoji smirks as he strides up to you, the taller man placing his hand atop your head. “Miss me, kouhai?”

“Not particularly,” you shrug. “You were only gone for two days, anyway.”

“Sister!” Makoto yells as he runs by you, embracing the nearby Amaya with a hug. The two twins smile and laugh before pulling away.

“I was watching the news,” Amaya says. “I was so worried...”

“It's okay, my dear!” Chihiro smiles, clutching onto Makoto's arm. “Your brother is too tough to be hurt!”

Amaya blushes as she notices just how... close Chihiro is hugging into her brother, prompting Makoto to blush as well. “Uh... I have something to announce...” Makoto mumbles. “Chihiro and I...”

“I see...” Amaya mutters, looking to Chihiro. “You... and my brother...”

They were the only ones surprised when Kaz and Mayu told everyone they started dating weren’t they?

Also wasn’t Chihiro Kaz, first kiss? Is he going to be awkward about this in front of Mayu and Makoto? This is Laz we are talking about.

>What? You and... Chihiro?!
>Uh, Congratulations you two.

Chihiro gives you a playful wink. "Thank you very much, my dear little Kazu!"

"Please don't call me that..." you grumble.

"Besides, are you all that surprised?" Chihiro smirks. "I have a way with boys, don't you remember?"

You blush, remembering the brief kiss you shared with her during that game. "W-w-well, I... the thing of it is that... well... you know... that's the thing..."

"Kazuma, are you in need of medical treatment?" Mayu asks. "You appear to be having a stroke."

Makoto turns his attention back towards his twin sister. "You're not... upset, are you?"

Amaya, at first, seems to be frozen in pure shock more than anything. But eventually, she snaps back to reality and shakes her head. "No... of course not. I'm happy for you."

"Oh?" Chihiro asks. "You're not outraged? Shocked and appalled by this scandalous relationship?"

"No," Amaya shakes her head. "After all... I saw the news. That thing, with the doves... that was you wasn't it? Your angel form?"

"Oh, how astute!" Chihiro laughs. "It was indeed."

"Then..." Amaya pauses. "If you can attain that form... I'm sorry. I must have misjudged you."

Chihiro smirks. "It's no bother! In fact, let's start anew. I'd certainly like to be more acquainted with my future sister-in-law!"

"Future what?!" Amaya and Makoto yell in unison, prompting a laugh from Chihiro.

"Just some light teasing!" she laughs. "Come along, we have much stories to share!"

As the group from the mission make their way back up the courtyard, you notice someone by the school gates, megaphone in hand... though Konami seems to be working a lot more solo than usual.

"Down with Dark Gate! Down with Dark Gate! Down with-Oh hey Kaz!" she exclaims into the megaphone, shaking her fist. "How's it going?"

"Hey Konami," you reply. "Where's the rest of the protesters? Usually you have a group with you..."

"Well..." Konami explains. "After the recent news report some folk don't think this academy is that bad after all... though most are just sitting at home watching the red carpet for that Red Mask movie..."

>So you saw the news and still think this academy sucks? What's the deal?

Konami pulls the megaphone away from her mouth for just a moment to speak to you plainly. "I'm not saying what the students did yesterday wasn't great. It was! They really are heroes... but should they be heroes in the first place. There's something... seedy about the whole thing. I mean... why teenagers? Why not adults?"

"Not a lot of awakened adults left," you mutter.

"What?!"

You sigh. "Look, Konami... your heart's in the right place, but... if you don't have your mob with you, can't you just take the day off?"

"And just sit on my butt like an uncaring slob?" Konami protests. "Eating junk food and glueing myself to the vapid exploits of some scummy celebrity like King Whatshisface? No way! Your principal is holding that big press conference today, and I'll be there to protest it!"

"I doubt you'd be allowed in..." you reply, prompting Konami to pout.

"Just you wait, Kazzie!" Konami smiles confidently. "I'll find a way, I'll always find a-HEY!"

Konami protest as Agent Blue interrupts, shutting the gates in her face. She looks through the bars with an annoyed pout. "What are you doing."

"You're a huge headache, you know that?" Blue sighs. "I hate doing this job, but you just keep making me have to work for a living. Don't you know how irritating that is?"

As Blue and Konami bicker like elementary school kids, you and Mayu make your way back up the courtyard. "So, for this date..." you mutter. "I think I might have an idea."

"Yes?" Mayu asks.

>I was thinking we could take a walk by the lake. That's pretty romantic, right?

Mayu pauses, placing a finger to her chin. "Yes. I have read in several novels that nature walks are something considered... romantic. That is what we shall do, then."

You don't know how someone can describe something with such a robotic tone yet still sounds so cute. You suppose that's just what affection is, all the little quirks of Mayu come across as so appealing to you. "Then come on," you smile. "Let's go now."

With that, you take Mayu by your hand, and as her fingers lock with yours, the two of you begin a journey into the village of Dakugeto. You pass by the shops, the arcade, the friendly baker's. It's still the cold of winter, but you feel warm with Mayu close to you.

Eventually the two of you arrive by the bank of the village's lake. Despite the cold, the lake hasn't frozen over, though there still remain small patches of ice along the sides. You walk along the shore, hand in hand, before eventually stopping to pick up a stone. "How many bounces do you think I could get if I skimmed this across the water?"

"Skimming stones across the water..." Mayu mutters. "I have never tried such a thing."

"Really?" you raise an eyebrow. "It's more fun than it sounds, trust me. Also more difficult than it sounds."

"A true test of skill, then?" Mayu ponders, curious. "Very well. I predict you will make... seven bounces."

"Seven?" you raise an eyebrow. "That's higher than my record... three higher than my records, actually..."

Mayu simply stares at you, before throwing up her clenched fist, her expression unchanging. "I believe in you."

You feel like she was attempting to emulate those high energy girls you see in high school anime... an A for effort. Still, this is a date, and you have to impress you girlfriend. Her words instill you with a strong motivation, as you skim the stone along the lakebed.

"1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7!" you exclaim. "Would you look at that! I did it!"

Mayu nods, with a smile, as you hand her a stone. "Okay, your turn."

Mayu looks at the stone, unsure of how to act. She twist into several different poses, looking for the best angle with which to fling the pebble. Eventually, she acts... tossing the stone which immediately sinks into the water upon first contact.

"Is that one? Or zero?"

"Zero."

"I see," Mayu notes. "I will need to practice."

You chuckle, before moving closer to Mayu. Working up the courage, you take her hand and kiss her lightly on the cheek.

"Kazuma..." Mayu blushes. "Custom dictates that a kiss signals the end of the date."

"Oh... right," you admit. "I guess I got a little excited..."

Mayu smiles, as she takes your other hand. The two of you stand by the lake, the morning sun bearing down on you, staring into each-others eyes as you inch ever closer, your faces touching as you-

"HEY?! WHAT THE HELL!"

Huh? That's Risa's voice. Was she reacting to... oh, no she doesn't see you and Mayu at all. You turn your head, earning a kiss from Mayu on your cheek that was originally aimed for your lips, as you note Risa and a few more of your classmates playing softball in the lakeside field. You then notice why Risa, bat in hand, was yelling... as Katsuyori, her new apparent bodyguard, leapt in front of her to catch the ball propelled by Tami.

"Oh, so sorry my lady!" Katsuyori bows, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "There was a projectile aimed towards you at rapid speed. I had to act, it is my duty after all!"

"This is terrible baseball," the ever eccentric Kaiya mutters, watching from the side with a baseball cap on.

"Yay sports!" Alice exclaims in turn, seated beside Kaiya. "Who's winning?"

"Duty my ass!" Risa bickers with Katsuyori. "You're just doing this to annoy me now!"

Katsuyori smirks. "Can't it be both?"

"You are insufferable!" Risa yells.

"What?" Katsuyori replies. "And you think you're any more sufferable? You spoiled princess!"

"I might be a spoiled princess, but at least I'm not some cocky spineless rat who answers to a dictator!"

"I don't answer to no-one!" Katsuyori protests.

"That's a double negative, you idiot!"

>Hey, can't you two try to get along? Katsuyori, why don't you join the game?

"That sounds like fun!" Tami notes, grabbing a fresh baseball.

"What?!" Risa exclaims. "No! Kaz, why? Ignore him! He doesn't exist!"

"Nobody's worse at ignoring me than you-" Katsuyori begins, until Risa shushes him, placing a finger to her lips as she does.

"Ssh! You can't talk! You don't exist!"

"You can't shush me! You can't silence!"

"Shush!"

You rub your temples, as Mayu strides up to the pair, putting her foot down with emphatic force. "Are you children? You sound like children. If you have qualms with each-other, then settle your differences through battle. Or... softball. Softball is a valid alternative to battle."

Katsuyori smirks. "Sounds good to me."

"Fine," Risa replies. "How about this? If I hit the ball further than you, you have to leave me alone forever. Maybe jump in the lake while you're at it."

"And if I win," Katsuyori notes. "You've got to make me dinner. And maybe massage my feet after all the hard work I've done guarding you."

"Like hell I will," Risa glares, as she readies her bat. "Tami, go ahead."

Tami pitches the baseball towards Risa with the pinpoint accuracy you'd expect of the ranger, as Risa connects with a thunderous shot from the bat, sending the ball flying across the field.

"Well, that ought to be a homerun, right?" Risa smirks. "Let's see you top that."

Katsuyori steps up to the hypothetical plate as Risa passes the bat off to him. With a knowing grin, he hunkers into position. "Ready."

Tami pitches yet again... and Katsuyori hits with enough force to crack the bat down the middle. The ball, meanwhile, shoots into the air so fast your eyes can barely process it, keeping it's trajectory upwards, piercing a low hanging cloud before finally falling across the hill, far from your line of sight.

"H-how did..." Risa mutters, in complete shock.

"Simple math, calculated the point of impact that would grant me the best result," Katsuyori explains. "Easy stuff, even with your friend there trying to sabotage me by whiffing her throw."

What the... just who is this guy?! Tami looks down and scuffs her feet along the floor in shame of being caught.

"I think the most shocking part of that is that you can do basic math..." Risa states. "But, no matter what you calculate, that kind of power... are you awakened?"

Katsuyori raises an eyebrow. "Awakened? Like... am I awake? Of course I'm awake! Is this some slang or something?"

"No... awakened," Risa states. "You can see demons, fight with incredible power?"

"Yeah."

"W-wha?!" Risa yells. "Since when?!"

"I don't know," the indignant Katsuyori shrugs. "Since always, I guess."

"Since always?!" Risa exclaims.

Katsuyori shrugs. "Maybe I am an idiot, people tell me that enough."

"Yeah, but what triggered your awakening?" Risa asks. "This doesn't make any sense!"

"Triggered?" Katsuyori ponders. "Nothing triggered it. Not as far as I know. I've just been like this since I was a kid at least. As long as I can remember anyway, and for as long Goa knew me."

"Goa?" Risa asks. "Who's Goa?"

"What, you don't know the Colonel in your own dad's army?" Katsuyori notes. "He took care of me since he was a kid. Kinda like a big brother I guess."

"Colonel..." Risa gasps. "More like a mass murderous big brother..."

"Anyway," Katsuyori changes the subject, "I believe I won. Don't worry, I'm not cashing in on that massage... but the dinner still stands."

With that, Katsuyori places his hand in his pocket, making his way back towards the school. Risa is compelled to chase him down. "Hey, hang on! I've got more questions you jackass! Don't you walk away from me!"

You'd point out the irony that Risa was running after Katsuyori, but you think better of it.

"How odd..." Mayu notes. "That man could be a powerful ally... or enemy."

"Let's hope for the former."

"Oh crap, look at the time!" Tami exclaims, checking her watch. "Isn't Wei's press conference starting soon?"

"You're right, it is..." you note. "We should really be around for that. Representing the school and all..."

"I am reluctant to end our date so soon..." Mayu sighs. "But our duty as students remain. Kazuma, allow me to kiss you to signal the end of the date."

"You don't have to announce it," you explain. "Just do it."

"Agreed," Mayu nods, as she hesitantly takes your hand, and the two of you make your way towards the school at a leisurely pace, making the most of the last few minutes of your date.

As you arrive at the school gates, you're surprised to see the sheer mass of people pooling into the courtyard. The entirety of the Japanese press must be here. Not that surprising when you think about it... you're in the thick of it, so you often forget that the reveal of the academy is the biggest piece of news in the country... hell, the world. Everyone must be tuning in to this press conference.

You stand at the back of the crowd, where you're welcomed by a familiar face trying to hide herself in a hoodie and dark sunglasses. "So you made it in, Konami?"

Konami turns to you and smiles. "How did you recognise me?! Oh well, I made it, and I'm going to rush the stage with this!"

Konami unzips her hood and pushes out her chest, revealing a printed shirt with the words "Dark Gate is Murder" written across it. "Pretty impressive right?"

"And I'd like to see you try to get to the stage," Agent Blue smirks as he slinks in beside a surprised Konami.

"I-I'd like to see you stop me!" Konami protests.

Blue shrugs. "I don't have to. Good luck getting through this crowd."

"O-oh..."

You stand at the back of the courtyard, as the massive set and podium at the front sees Saki, Maro, Makoto, Kosuke,
Hanako, Ryoji, Akihito, Agent White... and above all, Principal Wei himself.

Wei steps up to the podium, as most of the press are just shocked by the sheer frame of the man. He steps up to the podium, and you can hear a pin drop in the crowd.

Wei clears his throat, and proceeds to address the crowd. "My name is Wei Kobashi. When I was 15 years old... a time that seems ancient now... I became a student in this then newly formed academy. From student... to teacher... and now, to Principal... I have been proud to stand with this academy in it's battle to push back the forces that terrorise our world. It has not been an easy battle... so much weighs heavily on my mind over 65 years. I've lost friends, loved ones... but I never lost my drive. My sense of duty... my responsibility. I defended this world, and now I lead the new generation of heroes and defenders. A war once fought in secret, for years we have been silent protectors..."

Wei continues to speak, as you notice the crowd hanging onto his every word. That man, that old dragon, gives off an air of authority that cannot be described in words. His stern yet focused tone, his intimidating yet proper stance... his entire existence represents Dark Gate, and all it stands for.

"And now, as this fight makes it's way into your cities, into you homes, I ask of you... do not be afraid. Be bold, be strong, and stand with us. We are the protectors of this realm, and we-"

You could hear a pin drop during his speech... so the gunshot was particularly jarring.

From out of nowhere, a bullet pierces into Wei's chest.

The crowd gasps in shock, but Wei... continues his speech.

"WE.... W-WILL STAND TALL AGAINST OUR-"

Another gunshot, into the side of Wei's neck.

"ENEMIES!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyxOXjZHl9U

A third, directly to the heart, finally takes the big old man off his feet, falling back and crashing onto the stage.

The chaos starts immediately, people screaming, the press out of control, panicking, stampeding.

"No..." Saki mutters atop the stage, rushing to the principal's aid. "No... NOOOOO! GRANPA!"

Tears fill Saki's eyes as she hunkers over her grandfather's body and lets out a ghastly scream. A scream of pain.

You... you can't even process what's happening. Those gunshots... is... is Wei dead?

"GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!" you hear Ryoji yell as he storms through the crowd, his head full of steam as he rushes in the direction of the gunshots. His calm demeanour replaced with a determined rage as he attempts to move on the trail of the shooter. You move to follow him, but feel a hand on your shoulder.

"Don't think about it kid," Agent Blue notes. "I know you wanna help, but we'll look into this. Whoever did that took out the big boss. You need to get back and avoid getting hurt."

You want to follow Ryoji and chase after the shooter... but deep down you know that Blue is right. If that person could take down Principal Wei of all people with just three shots, they're far too dangerous for you, or for anyone else in your-

"Out of the way."

Mayu shoves Blue aside as she runs through the school entrace at full pace, her katana at the ready. She moves so quick you don't even have time to consider going after her before she's out of your line of sight. Seems she's even more rash than you are.

"Damn it... please be safe..." you mutter, realising that it's too late for you to catch up to them if you tried. With a reluctant sigh, you work with Blue to herd in the civilians and press, keeping everyone safe as you make your way inside. On the way you see Wei being moved onto a gurney and wheeled inside, with a distraught Saki still clutching to her grandfather's body and crying.

"G-grandpa..."

You wait inside with the crowd, anxious as all hell, awaiting the arrival... or really any sign of Ryoji and Mayu. You sit in the corner, humming to yourself and tapping your foot nervously as Kiriko approaches. "W-what happened? Me and Roka were watching on the tv and... and... oh god, is Wei dead?"

"I'll beat the living tar out of whoever did it!" Roka clenches his fist.

"I don't know..." you mutter. "I mean... he can't be dead. He's Wei... he's the toughest human on the planet."

"I'm scared..." Hanako mutters.

Hanako is shivering, but the more shocking visual is Kaiya curled up, back against the wall, rocking back and forth. "Bad death... wrong death... death, bad, bad..."

"What's with her? I thought she loved this stuff?" Chuichi ponders.

"She was like this when Yasunari was... was..." Hanako mutters, unable to finish the sentence.

Anri pauses in thought. "Hmm... maybe the two incidents are related..."

"No conspiracy theories out of you!" Akuro exclaims.

You and the others wait in fear, before finally you get a glimpse of Ryoji and Mayu walking up through the courtyard. They seem fine, thankfully, but... no sign of the assassin.

You rush to meet the two of them, and are quick with the question. "What happened? Did they get away?"

Ryoji shakes his head. "No... I thought it was the next demon or something, but the attacker was human... mostly."

"Mostly?"

Ryoji throws up his right arm, revealing that he's carrying a bunch of wires and scrap metal. Akuro scoffs. "So, it was... what? A cyborg? That's insane."

"We fight demons, idiot," Ninsei points out. "How is that unbelievable?"

"We were surprised too," Ryoji explains. "Came right out of left field. When it was caught it tried to self-destruct. This is all that's left."

"Self-destruct?!" you exclaim. "Are you okay?"

Mayu bows. "Yes. Ryoji-senpai shielded the blast."

"How?"

"With... clever tactics," Mayu hesitates to say, as Ryoji gives her a pat on the shoulder, before brushing past you.

"Hey, where are you going?" you ask.

>Go with Ryoji

You follow behind Ryoji as he marches through the corridors on his way to Tekina's office. He doesn't even look back at you. You've never seen Ryoji this serious before. Usually he's all cool and teasing, but now... he's focused. He's determined. And he is pissed off. And to think... he doesn't even like Wei.

Ryoji kicks open the door of Tekina's office as her walks in, tossing the scrap metal to his side. Saki is standing by her grandfather in bed, holding the old man's hand as Ryoji walks up to her.

"How's the old fart?" Ryoji asks.

"Stable," Saki sniffles, her eyes red from crying. "But I was so scared... and angry... and shocked... I should have gone after the shooter, it was my duty to chase them down, but I let the school down."

Ryoji places a hand on Saki's shoulder. "Like hell you did, Sak. It's okay..."

"Ryoji..."

Saki turns to Ryoji and embraces him tight. Ryoji places his hand on the back of her head and whisper softly to her. "It's okay..."

From more serious than you've ever seen to more gentle and caring than you've seen Ryoji. He's quite the character, that one.

A groan from the bed, as Principal Wei begins to open his eyes. Saki and Ryoji turn their heads towards him, still locked in the embrace.

"I would prefer if you kept your displays of affection in the dorms..." Wei grumbles.

"Grandpa!" Saki exclaims with relief. "You're... you're okay!"

"And you're still as grouchy as ever, huh gramps?" Ryoji smirks.

Wei glares, as he turns to Agent White, leaning against Tekina's desk. "Whoever attempted to take my leave seems to have misjudged me," Wei notes. "Perhaps the poor damned soul didn't know who I was."

White notes the scrap metal on the floor before turning to Ryoji. "And this is?"

"The remains of the shooter," Ryoji explains. "He was part mechanical."

"I see..." Agent White mutters. "And tell me, Ryoji... you faced him alone? I must say, you often find a way of getting out of these scrapes without any harm, despite being by all acounts, the weakest combat-wise in your class. Nay, the entire school. Why is that?"

"Well, isn't that something..." White smiles, staring directly at Ryoji. "Fascinating."

Wei clears his throat. "Regardless, an attempt on my life isn't something that can be ignored."

"Yes, whoever was behind this may strike again," White replies.

"I'm more worried for the children," Wei explains. "I was attacked in the school courtyard. That means that the children's safety is at risk."

"Aren't they at risk every day regardless?" White asks. "Why is the old dragon suddenly growing a hea-"

"Shut your mouth," Wei states. "One of those bullets could have hit my granddaughter."

White pauses, then nods. "Right. My apologies, Wei-sama. Now is simply the matter of identifying the assassin. No body makes things difficult, but the scrap remnants may provide us with answers should we examine them."

"Then do it," Wei commands, before turning to you, Saki and Ryoji. "Go back to your dorms, children. This is up to the staff."

"But Grandpa-"

"Do as I command, Saki."

Ryoji shakes his head. "You just got shot. You shouldn't be running an investigation."

"Right!" Saki nods. "And... we're you're family. Don't push us away."

"He's not my family," Wei glares at Ryoji, before pointing at you. "And I don't even know this one."

"I'm Kazuma?" you reply. "Kazuma Asai? We've spoken before?"

"Asai... right, I know your father."

"You're supposed to know me..." you mumble.

"So screw your words, old man," Ryoji continues. "We're staying."

Wei raises an eyebrow. "Are you so opposed to my authority that you would show concern for me out of spite."

"You're damn sure I will," Ryoji replies.

You feel very out of place here. Between the agents, and Wei, and Saki and Ryoji... you've got nothing much to over. You're just overwhelmed by the recent events, and you can barely think straight. At least things can't get any more complicated...

"...Oh, is this a bad time?"

They just got more complicated. You recognise that voice. You swing around, to see the sight of a calm white-haired girl in a blue coat.

"You!" you exclaim.

"Haven't seen or heard from you since New Year..." Saki mutters.

"What?!" Wei exclaims. "Who the hell is that? How did she get in here?!"

"It's okay, she's friendly..." Saki explains. "Well... I think so. Her name's Miyoko. She's part of a group of... well, former demons. They've helped us out a couple times."

"As to answering your question of how I appeared in this room," Miyoko explains, bridging her fingers together with an ever-smug grin. "My friends and I possess a great deal of abilities. Abilities that may help you in the times ahead..."

"What do you want?" Ryoji asks.

"Well, it was hard to avoid the news," Miyoko explains. "As much as we value our exclusivity, it seems we can no longer justify remaining in the shadows with recent events. And as this school is the centre-point of our dangerous and dastardly demonic dilemma it's deemed that... well, we come here."

>Maybe if you shared some of your research texts with us first...

Miyoko chuckles as she adjust the lapels of her jacket. "Of course, of course! We'll be happy to share with you all of the information and research on the darkworld we've gathered!"

"And just how extensive is this research?" White asks.

"Well, I have been cultivating this collection for several centuries," Miyoko explains.

"Centuries?" White raises an eyebrow.

"You're a lot more eager to share than you were in the past," You reply.

Miyoko nods. "Astute observation. Put simply... we share a common enemy yet again. This academy has earned our trust... and we hope to prove that we are worthy of yours."

Wei stares at the leader of the demon hunters, staring her down, sizing her up. She isn't intimidated, she simply wear that smug grin yet again.

"We'll talk," Wei grunts. "Everyone but White and the girl, out."

You're all herded out into the corridor, as Ryoji and Saki hold each-other tight.

"What do you think about that?" Ryoji asks.

"I... I can't say a trust them," Saki shakes her head. "Not yet, anyway. I'd like to... but for now, we need to keep an eye on them."

"Get running back to your dorm kouhai," Ryoji mutters. "And tell your girlfriend I said thanks."

You return to the dorms, to see a lot of your classmates in the hallway, staring into the lounge.

"What's going on now?" you ask.

Chuichi points into the lounge, and as you get a view, you see Omitsu of the demon hunters sitting on the couch watching tv.

"She just poofed in!" Mai explains. "Then she went to the freezer, took a lollipop, and just sat down! Without a word!"

"I already told you, she's mute..." Anri sighs.

Chuichi smirks and cracks his knuckles with a chuckle. "Well, while she's here... I think it's time to put on the moves. Show the ol' Chuichi charm!"

"Weren't you shot down by everyone already?" Sae asks.

>Hey, he'll never land a date if he doesn't keep trying.

"That's the spirit!" Chuichi exclaims. "Uhh... I think."

"This is going to end in a disaster," Risa points out. "Just like that time you asked me out, and you asked Hanako out, and you asked Mio out, and you asked Sae out-"

"Yeah, and your love lives are just booming," Chuichi jokes. "Just like mine's gonna be. Sit back and watch."

Chuichi takes two steps towards Omitsu... but for the small mute girl throws up the middle finger to the green haired jokester.

Chuichi pauses in his tracks, before speaking again. "Hey, would you like to-"

Omitsu stretches her arm further towards him with the middle finger raised, her free hand still holding onto the ice lolly. Chuichi hangs his head in defeat, turns around, and marches back to the group.

"Told you," Risa mutters.

Kaiya walks up and punches Chuichi in the chest, causing him to double over. "Oh, what was that for?"

"I'd say maybe she's jealous," Akuro replies. "But that's just unrealistic."

"Sorry man," you frown. "Better luck next time."

"I'll be pulling for any luck next time..." Chuichi mumbles as he returns to his room in defeat. The class scatter to their various rooms as well... all but one classmate, leaning against the wall with his arms folded.

Roka pauses, looking off into the distance. "Right... you know one of the reasons I don't like you?"

"Not as well as I know the reasons I don't like you," you reply.

Roka turns his head to face you. "Me, you, and the samurai all want to be the strongest in the world. The greatest fighter who ever lived. But... our reasons were different. You just wanted to live up to your dad... the samurai just wanted to be strong enough for revenge..."

"And you?" you ask.

"I want to help people," Roka grunts. "It sounds stupid and simple, but... I want to be the strongest that ever was, so I know that I'm helping as many people as I can. I want to be a hero. I hated that you and her didn't see that, but... you stayed behind, helped the crowd. I like that. I actually... kinda respect that."

"Oh yeah?"

"D-don't get me wrong!" Roka exclaims in a panic. "We aren't friends. I still hate your guts!"

"And I hate that you're dating my sister," you reply.

"But..." Roka pauses. "Look, I was taught to fight by this wild old kook named Kanashido. Me and some other kids were being bullied a lot at school, and I wanted to learn to fight, so I could stand up to those douchebags. Kanashido took me in. He was this old martial arts master who had become a complete recluse in his later years. I couldn't believe it, it was like something out of a movie."

"Okay... why are you telling me this?" you ask.

"Because... Kanashido was real selective about the people he taught. His entire life he only took on two students, with me being the second. The first was a kid named Kankuro. Kankuro Asai."

You pause, frozen in shock at that revelation. "W-what? My... my dad?"

"Yeah," Roka replies as he makes his way to his room. "That's enough sharing. Change your ringtone, nerd."

With that, Roka returns to his dormroom, as you're left trying to process the information. Roka was trained by the same man who trained your dad? What could that mean? Why just those two?

You shake it of, trying not to get flooded with thoughts and questions. Roka is a mostly closed book, so it's not like you'd get quick answers from him.

>Stop by Mayu's room.

It's still early in the evening, you have time to spend with Mayu. You first grab a few things from your room before making your way over to Mayu's room. You knock on the door and Kiriko is the first to answer.

"Oh, Kaz!" she exclaims, pleasantly surprised. "I was just about to visit Roka... looks like you had similar ideas with your lovebird!"

"Heh..." you chuckle nervously. "I guess so."

"Well, have fun!" Kiriko smiles wryly as she brushes by, and you step into the room to see Mayu sitting on the bed.

She nods to acknowledge you arrival. "Kazuma. I have been working on my stone throwing form. Perhaps we can take another journey to the lake tomorrow?"

"Sounds lovely," you smile. "But for tonight, I've brought a blanket, some snacks... and my favourite movies."

"Yes, that war film you talk so much about," Mayu states. "The War of the stars, or something to that effect."

"Close enough," you reply. "I know you haven't seen it, so I figured we could at least get through the first one tonight."

Mayu looks at you and smiles, beckoning you to come closer. "That sounds lovely... my love."

You're shocked that her words don't give you any pause. You simply sit by her side and throw up the blanket and put on the movie. You wrap up, snuggling close together under the blankets, and it doesn't take long for Mayu to become completely transfixed with the movie. With every scene, with every chase, with every Death Star exploding, Mayu's eyes are as bright as shining stars.

As the credits roll, Mayu simply turns her head to face you. "There is another, correct?"

"Another two," you reply.

"I see..." Mayu notes. "Let us begin with the second."

Yep... she's a keeper.

Somehow, the two of you manage to plough through all three movies that night. You wake up in the morning, to discover a sleeping Mayu hugging tight into you, with her face lying on your chest.

... And then your mom clears her throat.

You turn your head to see your mother, sitting in her chair accompanied by Kiriko, in the doorway of the room. "Don't mind me, honey. The two of you are so adorable!"

Your sudden panic is enough to shake Mayu awake as she jolts up, tired and groggy.

"Hmm?" she rubs her eyes.

"It's okay sweetie," your mother laughs. "You're fully clothed. I doubt you two were getting up to any funny business!"

"But it's cute seeing them all flustered!" Kiriko laughs.

"Oh..." Mayu mutters, coming too. "Namika-sama. it is nice to see you."

"Sama?" your mother laughs. "No need to be so formal! As I understand, you're family now!"

Mayu blushes as you sit up in bed, very confused. "It's good to see you and everything... but you sure startled me. You never said anything about visiting..."

"I didn't know either!" your mother explains. "But after that awful business that happened to Wei-sensei... I got a call from the school. It seems that they were calling in past students and teachers asking for help. Of course, I'm not fit to fight, but after I explained my condition they asked if I wanted to return as a teacher regardless!"

"And... you said what?" you ask. "Mom... you hated this place."

Your mother pauses. "Yes... for many years, I resented this place. I was bitter from everything that happened to me on these grounds... but believe or not, I have many good memories of this place as well. And... after seeing the heroes that my little boy and little girl had become, I knew I had to throw away the past and support my kids. So... you're no longer looking at Namika Mashita, former teacher! You're now looking at Namika Mashita, new Vice Principal of Dakugeto!"

"V-Vice Principal?!" you exclaim. "How did you get that right off the bat?!"

"Good track record," your mother smiles. "Wei-sensei liked me."

You rub your head, trying to process this. Your mother just became vice principal? So many insane things happening at once!

"Namika-sama..." Mayu mutters, staring off into the distance. "Did... you say that they were calling all past students and teachers?"

"Yes, that's what they said."

Mayu continues to stare... until tears start brimming in her eyes.

"Mayu, what's wrong?" you ask.

"M-mother..." Mayu mutters.

You pause. "Oh, that's right... your mother was a teacher as well, wasn't she?"

"Aren't you excited to see your mom?" Kiriko asks.

"... No."

>Meanwhile

At the gates of Dakugeto, a mysterious woman, adorned in a loose robe steps up to the school. Heavily scarred, and with tattered rags blowing in the wind where right arm once was, the woman carries an old sword resting by her left hip. An eyepatch stretches across the left side of her face, a large pipe in her mouth, and her fiery red hair tied up in a long ponytail. A striking look, a striking figure, a striking presence. Yet that is not what passerby found the most odd. That would be the swaying and singing the possibly rabid stranger performed as she made her journey.

"Hush, little baby, don't say a word... mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird..."

As the woman made her way up the long steep heel from the village of Dakugeto to the school at the top, more eyes became transfixed on her, her movements, and her voice.

"... And if that demon won't fall down, you'll still be the sweetest... babe in town..."

The woman stops by the gates, the heels of her sandals digging deep into the snow. With a cackle of laughter, she speaks once more. "Don't cry, little baby Mayu... mama's home."

Act Nakatoni, a woman who has faced many hardships in her life. Mother, widow... and your worst nightmare.

Quite a few shocking moments in this episode! What did you find most shocking, and where do you expect these revelations and events to go?

That was a fantastic episode. I was expecting fluff. And got a whole bunch of revelations instead.

I am actually quite curious as to who shot Wei. At first I thought it was a parent of a dead student, but now...I am curious as to whether its a demon or something even more out of left field.

And then there is Mayu's mom...Kaz is...Kaz is not safe...at all...for several reasons, not just ancestery...here is hoping Act doesn't notice a certain mark on her daughters body...and ask questions...

The Roka/Kaz connection getting deeper is really neat!

Characters I am worried about right now include:
>Kaz
>Mayu
>Namika
>Alice (demon hunter stuff)
>Concordia (for many many reasons)
>Wei
>Amaya
>Kaz again

Great episode! Even Kaz/Mayu being the literal worst pairing couldn't ruin it.
