It was sometime right before the nightfall. The sun was already setting.

And no sign of Mei. She understands the way this match has gone. It was another camping fest. And she was aiming to have you fall into one of her traps. Your patience has grinded down. But not enough to actually go charging out at the nearest sign of engine roars or gun barrels sticking out of trees. You had to be just as patient as she was being. These matches have no time limit anyway.

You really wish they did though. You can’t imagine how bored the crowd must be right now.

Regardless, you leant back in the hatch, sighning. All of you were gathered up in Nisson. After two hours, none of you found anything. Not to the south, nothing was clearly coming from the east either. Mei had to be somewhere on that Hill or at least somewhere on the west side of the map. The issue was that she could be anywhere on the west side of the map. And since you had to go to her to find her, she’d definitely get the first shot in to start any match.

It would be a turkey shoot with the heavies as well if they got the first shot in.

Regardless, Iris defers to you on what to do. “Elodie, We’re starting to lose light. What should we do now?”

> Dig in where you are. You've got the patience of a Buddhist.

The plan here now was to dig in and wait. You were guarding the north side with Lyra. Elyse was guarding the eastern flank overlooking the main road in. And Iris had set up her tanks a little far from the hill so they could see if there was anyone at the top. Too close and they’ll be blindsided by anyone sneaking up over the ridge. All in all, you were keeping together tight and ready. Mei would never try to assault this position.

You sigh, grimacing a little. Stack unbuttons out of the loader’s hatch, sighing. “I hate this. This could’ve been so fun too! Why’s Mei doing this chickenshit bullshit?”

“It’s meant to frustrate us,” you say. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she deliberately tossed away her entire team like that to lull us into a false sense of security. She’s trying to bait us into a fight she wants. She doesn’t need to eliminate us all. She just needs to eliminate us.”

“Well, it’s working,” Stack mutters.

Iris says, “I still see nothing. “But I’m seeing some smoke rising out of the west. That could be them.” You take a look with your binoculars. Sure enough, there are some dust clouds rising up from the west. No more than a kilometer out. Perhaps it’s more of Mei trying to bait you in.

> Go investigate.

Your tanks move up the hill. Iris’ team takes the left flank, your team takes the right. Moving up the hill is no challenge. What is a challenge though is actually finding Mei. Because once you crested over, they were nowhere to be seen. The treadmarks left by that one Centurion as well start fading once you get further into the trees too. You lean back, growling a little. Goddamn it.

Alright. You take another look around. There’s more dustclouds to the north side. And another cloud to the south. Those are definitely signs of movement from tanks. But knowing Mei, she’s probably using one as a decoy of some sort. Maybe a Centurion dragging logs along the ground. If you fall for that one, she might end up coming in from behind you.

Iris calls out to you. “You want to split up? You, Elyse, and Lyra can take the north. We’ll take the south.”

“Go south, Iris. We’ll block up anyone who tries to come in from the north.”

“Got it,” says Iris.

With all that said and done, Iris starts moving her heavy tanks to the south. You move your tanks away from her, moving northwesterly to form a blocking position. You won’t go after the people up north. But you won’t let them come down to rally together if it comes to blows. It’s best to use your numbers to keep them divided. You grab onto the hatch, taking a breath. Alright, here you go.

You wait as Iris starts scouting about. “Moving around,” says Iris. “Still don’t see anything.”

Serina says, “This is work for lighter tanks anyway. And we’re losing light out here too.” You look out and see the sun starting to die over the horizon. Not much light left. But you’re not going to turn the spotlights on just yet. “Visibility’s gonna get fucked.”

Serafina says, “The cowards! They’re trying to do what they did last night!”

“Calm down,” says Iris. “We need to-“ You hear a loud explosion cut her off.

“They’re killing us out here!” yells Serina.

You find your heavy tanks in a little clearing, backing their engine blocks up to each other. You count the number of tanks firing on them. One, two, three… FOUR! That means the other one is all by himself! You bang your fist on your hatch. Damn! Forget it, you’ll have to get them later! These four though you can wipe out in fell swoop! You can’t tell if any of them are the flag due to the encroaching darkness and their position among the trees, but regardless they’re going down! “Fire!” you yell. One shot flies through the air at one of the Centurions. A bounce off the top of the turret. Damn!

“Firing!” yells Lyra. Her gun fires as well. No hits. Elyse shoots too with her Challenger. It goes wide. You check with your binoculars. They’re their turning their sights on you.

Okay, wasn’t a smart idea to announce your presence like that.

Our heavies can't disengage at this point, which means this is the decisive engagement. We must begin it with gusto. Have the heavies charge their attackers while we split on approach and initiate a Bermuda Triangle attack. We'll probably lose some tanks, but we could well wipe out the rest of the ZES team before the lone Northern tank, who I presume to be Mei, arrives.

“Charge them!” you yell.

“ATTACK!” screams Regina. Her IS-2 starts plowing forward, and after her all the rest too. Once they see the heavies have reengaged, they take their sights off of you and fire at Regina. All four shots unfortunately hit her square through the frontal armor.

> KO: Regina Taney (IS-2m “David”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: EMILA LISCUM (Centurion Mk I) (ELITE)

“Avenge her! AVENGE HER!” screams Serafina, the sole surviving Heavy at this point. They fire away, their shot missing. That momentary distraction however bought you some time.

“Lyra, Elyse! Let’s pull a Bermuda Triangle here!” you order.

“Got it!” says Lyra.

“Ready!” Elyse nervously shouts.

You swoop in from around Serafina’s flank. At your word, Josephina initiates a powerslide around, then Lyra, then Elyse in one long coordinated slide across Serafina’s front. The Centurions track you. One shot even misses right over your head. But they’re immediately pasted by the tanks behind you.

> KO: JULIA BRUNET (Centurion Mk I) (ELITE)

Once you’re done with your slide, your three tanks immediately pursue them in assault formation. Lyra and Elyse fly in from the flanks and you from the front. The Centurion tries targeting you first, but Lyra gets on its flank before they can even return fire.

“We’ll set up an ambush for Mei right here. Everyone get in the trees.”

Your tanks start rolling into the trees around the clearing. You’re taking up a central position across from where you first entered in. Elyse and Lyra were on the left and right respectively. With the sun having already creeped past the horizon, night time here was here. And already you were engulfed in darkness. You won’t hit the spotlights though until absolutely necessary.

Now all there was was the waiting game. Mei had to come to you now.

“Do you hear that? Asks Lyra.

You hear a faint rumble in the distance. You grab the hatch, steeling yourself. You hear the crackle and snapping of twigs and the crunching and grinding of metal upon Earth. She was coming in from the North. She was going to waltz right into your ambush. Finally, you’ll get a shot at Mei.

You take a deep breath.

Here she comes.

The rumbling and noises stopped. Did Mei halt her progress when she got close? Does she know an ambush is waiting for her? The internal lights in the Comet were the only lights around. And there was nothing giving away your position. You take a breath.

“Is Mei out there?” asks Lyra.

“Quiet,” you say.

Still nothing. No sign of her.

Elyse says, “I don’t think she’s gonna trip the trap!”

“She will,” says Lyra. “Just hold on.”

You bite your lip so tight you can feel the skin breaking. Damn it, Mei. Come on…

A flash, then suddenly an explosion of smoke in the middle of the clearing. “FIRE!” you scream. Everyone fires at where the flash used to be. Then you hear the loud revving of an engine. Mei’s Centurion breaks right through the tree line, almost getting some air off of a slight incline before diving into the smoke. You can see it start doing donuts in the cloud, spreading the smoke around, a bunch of logs being dragged behind it kicking up dust and dirt all around. An illumination fire fires off into the air, then explodes only short of clearing the trees. The bright flash almost blinds you all.

“Ah my eyes!” screams Lyra.

“I can’t see!” shouts Elyse. Mei fires at Elyse first, shooting a shell right into her turret.

Oliver crashes out of cover and straight through the smoke. You hear the distinct shot of Lyra’s 77mm firing off. But unfortunately it’s followed by a 17 pounder shot and a loud metallic burst.

You burst through the smoke and find Mei circling around Lyra’s KO’d tank. You speed past her rear and try to plant a shot at point blank. “Now, Winona!” She fires. Too fast. The shot gashes across her side. “Damn it! Missed!” Stack loads in a new shell post haste. Mei stops up, then reverses up to get behind you as you keep going. She’s turned out, looking to you as she holds a flare gun in her hands. “Right, Winona, get ready to-“

She fires the flare gun straight at your turret. You cover your eyes from the intense brightness. Goddamn it! “Josephina, keep moving!” you order. The flare lights your tank up in an intense red glow, visible for miles. Probably not relevant in the several dozen meters this fight was taking place in though. Mei’s tank completes its revolution around Lyra’s tank, then fires at you. The shot crosses your hull, right between the glacis and the gun. “Turret traverse left!” Your turret starts turning left. “Fire!”

The shot misses again. “Fuck!” yells Winona. “I missed, sorry!”

Mei pops several smoke canisters from the rear of her tank, then again starts pulling a donut to once again disappear.

“Let’s go at her! Winona, I’ll call the shot! Stack, load HE!” Stack rams home an HE shell into the breech. Your tank starts moving around Lyra’s wreck for cover. Right then and there a random shot from Mei screams across your glacis once more. “Fire!” Your HE shell shoots out and explodes in the smoke cover. Like Moses and the Red Sea, the clouds part away to reveal Mei, sidelong aiming at you. An illumination flare gets shot out from your tank, giving you another good look. “Winona! Now!”

The shot shoots out. Mei flinches back as the shot bounces off her turret. Damn it! So close! “Come on, Winona! You can do better than that! Come on!” Her tank starts accelerating at you. Her turret and frontal armor line up. “Load up again! She’s coming at us!”

Stack rams a new round in. “Up!”

As Mei moves to cross your front, you realize her turret is still lined up frontally. She’s not aiming at you-

I just want to say that I’m proud of each and every one of you for making it this far with us! We’ve come a long way since June! And I’m happy to say that we’re going to go ALL THE WAY!” Everyone screams, jumping and cheering. “Everyone, take the day off from school tomorrow, I’ll call in some favors to get you all a free pass! Tonight, do some celebrating, we’ll move back in the morning!”

Winona hugs you from behind. “Ha! We did it! We did it!”

Stack punches you in the gut. AAAGGGH- “WOOO! Yeah!” You hunch over in Winona’s arms. Stack why… “GET SOME!”

Ingrid hugs Stack, hoisting her up. “Ha! We did it, short stuff!”

“Let go of me!” Stack kicks her legs, now suddenly angry. “Let go!” Josephina simply stands to the side, a smile on her face. “Argh!”

> Give your final words to Mei.

You let your crew go on without you. Denise takes you aboard her Kettenkrad to drive on over to the ZES Camp. There, people have already packed things up in an orderly fashion. Denise stops up inside the perimeter, there you find Mei speaking with several of her girls. You step off, looking to them. Denise frowns, then looks back at you. “You want me to back you up, Ellie?”

“I’m fine,” you say. With that, you march on over. Mei appears to be rather calmly speaking with them. And the girls don’t appear to be very happy or amused. A far cry from their attitude back on ZES. Once they spot you though, they immediately interpose themselves between you and Mei. Freya points to you, stopping you.

“If you’re here to gloat,” says Freya. “Think again.”

“I’m not here to gloat,” you say back. “I just wanted to say good game.” Josie folds her arms, then nods to Freya. They step back and allow you to speak with Mei. You step up to Mei, and find her glaring at you silently. “Mei.”

“Elodie Zumwalt.” She places her hands on her hips.

“That was a good match.” You offer your hand.

She’s not shaking your hand.

Josie nudges Mei. “Come on, Mei.” Mei gently pushes Josie away. She then steps up closer to you, her eyes staring holes right into you. You stand your ground.

Mei says, “You have passion. Would explain why I hear rumors of you crying after yesterday’s match.” You flinch. Why she…

“Passion has worked for me so far. And it must have for you. You can’t have come this far without it.”

Mei tilts her head, then nods her head to the others. “Away with you.” They all hesitantly leave the two of you alone. Josie sighs, folding her arms as she leaves. “You know, Elodie Zumwalt. Passion isn’t purely what makes one good at Senshado or anything else. It’s talent too.”

You shrug. “I like to think I have talent.”

“I like to think I have talent too, but liking to think we have something doesn’t mean we do,” she states firmly. “Whatever Arisu sees in you, it certainly seems to escape me.” She waves it off, sighing. “Elodie Zumwalt. When the Shimada-ryuu expelled me, that was the worst day of my life. Imagine being told that what you were doing, all the good you did for the school, was wrong. I cried that day.” She shakes her head, folding her arms. “Now, not so much.”

“You calling me weak for crying after a loss?” you ask.

“I’m saying there’s no crying in Senshado. Learn to lose with grace,” she says firmly.

“Maybe I will when you do,” you mutter. She quirks her brow, looking at you like someone would a cockroach. “I’ve taken a lot of beatings before coming to LGA, Mei. I think I know how to lose.”

Mei grunts. “Fair. We’ll see you next year.” That’s something that gets under your skin. With that, she turns and leaves you. Not even a wave goodbye.

If you meet her in the finals, things are going to be different.

You arrive to see Griselda shaking hands with Jack and JJ. “Thanks for help,” says Griselda. “I hear it was pretty hairy getting the planes together for something like this.”

Jack shrugs. “Ah, it was nothing, Gris. We’re just glad we got to see you win here.” He smiles, then sees you coming. “And lookie here! It’s the girl of the hour! Ellie!” You shake hands with Jack, grinning. “Good job out there! We’re glad to be of some help.”

“Thanks, Jack,” you say. You look over at Jeep Jockey. “Jock.”

Jock nods, folding his arms awkwardly. “Yeah, yeah… we were- I mean, it was nothing.” Jack snorts, nudging Jock a little.

“Well.” You pout a little, kicking the ground a bit. “Thanks so much, Jock anyway. I’ll give you something special.” Griselda, Iris, and Jack look to you expectantly. “… ALONE,” you state firmly. They immediately bolt, Griselda and Jack chuckling and giggling under their breath.

Jock says, “Hey, you don’t- you don’t need to give me anything. I don’t need anything from-“ You gently peck on his lips, shutting him up. Hmph. Idiot.

You say, “We’ll discuss it later, Jock. I’m not saying you’re going to lose your V-card tonight. Just… maybe we’ll go someplace or something.” You blink. “You’re not ever going to lose- no, that-…” You start blushing a little. “I mean- look, if you’re around tomorrow, maybe we can go for a meal or something? Maybe have a nice day, okay? Okay? No lewd stuff.”

“Oh, definitely, no, no…” Jock looks away.

“You’re thinking of lewd stuff,” you growl.

“Nooooo…” He looks away, innocently.

“Ugh. You’re such a dog.” You gently tap his nose, snorting at him. With that though, you decide to walk away and leave him to his own devices. “See you later, Jock.”

“Yeah, yeah. Uh huh…” Jock smiles, a light blush on his face. “Later.”

You step into your tent and find Winona, Josephina, Ingrid, and Stack are huddled in the middle. You can even see Denise among the crowd too. “Should we tell her? I mean, won’t she be a buzzkill?” asks Stack.

Ingrid says, “She’ll probably tell us to toss it.”

Winona says, “Come on, guys. I-“ They all see you. “Oh, Ellie! Hi!” They immediately break their huddle. Winona keeps her hands behind her back, looking to you. Everyone is doing their best to look cute and innocent. Nope, none of that babe of the woods crap.

“What are you hiding?” you ask. It better be something good and not something illegal. All the girls look to Winona. Winona sweats a bit. “Come on.” Winona sighs, then holds it out.

A bottle of brandy. Winona says, “I smuggled this out of my Dad’s basement. I figured we could uncork it seeing as how we’re in the postseason now.” She frowns. “But everyone’s saying that you’ll just tell me to toss it.”

“Uncork it.” They all look at you. What. You can be fun too. Now, technically you’re all six years away from legal drinking but… “How bad could it be?”

“COUNTRY ROADS! TAKE ME HOME! TO THE PLACE! WHERE I BELONG! WEST VIRGINIA! MOUNTAIN MAMA! TAKE ME HOME! COUNTRY ROADS!” You, Denise, and Winona have locked arms waved side to side as you sang the song of WVU. This brandy was absolute greatness! It was like all the stress in your head just suddenly vanished. Ingrid and Josephina rolled around in bed, laughing and giggling while Stack drinks up the last of the brandy. “Woooo!” You wave your arms in the air. “I sing great! I knew I should’ve listened to my mom and been a singer!”

Denise flops forward on her face. “Singing is for squares and faggots. Stick with tanks.”

You pout, looking down at Denise. “Denise you- you why must you be such a buzzkill? I can sing like I dance! And if this tent were any higher I’d show you how to dance!” You look over at Winona, then find her swaying side to side, a long face on her… face. “Winona, why the long face?”

“I’m jealous!” she mopes. “You got that boy JJ!”

“What!?” You squint at her. “Fuck are you talking about?”

“He gets to kiss you! I want to kiss you!” She leans in, puckering her lips. WHOA WHOA WHOA You keep her at arms length. “Mmmmm! Come back here, lovely! I want to know what it’s like too!”

“K- Kissing isn’t as fun as it looks!” you say. You turn around.

Winona groans, then immediately grabs your blouse from behind. “Hmph! I bet JJ doesn’t get to have these though!” What is she-

She lifts up your blouse, taking your bra along with it.

Winona grins, giggling. “Oooooh, Ellie!” She grabs your breasts, jiggling them a little. “The fact that I get to play with these and JJ doesn’t turns me-“

The ear-piercing scream that comes out of you probably woke a few people up.

That's it for tonight. We've finally finished off this match. And because I have work in the morning I'm going to go right to sleep. So unfortunately no match highlights. I'll probably update when I get back from work. Hope you all enjoyed.
