Here you are, in a small village at the edge of the kingdom. Hard to believe that a fairly unremarkable village such as this is where a great wizard is currently living. You expected an ominous tower looming over you, but the great Wizard of the West, Xanathar, resides in a humble house on a hill in the village. Your purpose for coming here is to start your apprenticeship with this great wizard, under the recommendation of the wizard's daughter, who is a great mage by her own rights, you make your way far from home. Why of all people she recommended you though is still a mystery. She only told you to give the wizard a letter sealed in an envelope when you arrive.

You step out of the carriage which you rode on to get here, carrying your luggage of clothing along with you. Looking down on a puddle beneath your feet, you see a reflection of a...

The reflection shows a young lady in a beautiful dress befitting of your status. The wizard's daughter, the Sorceress Melissa came to your family offering her recommendations in exchange for a favor unbeknownst to you. The dealings was kept secret between her and your father save for the existence of the fact that it happened.

A girl's voice takes you back to reality as you are lost in your own thoughts. A little girl is leaning forward in front of you.

"Hey lady, I saw your carriage coming from a mile away! You're not from here are you? I know that because of your dress. No one around here wears that kind of clothing, or could afford it for that matter. My mom said that most people who wears clothes like yours are nobles! Are you a noble? Why did you come here?"

The little chatterbox bombarded you with questions with an eager smile on her face. Do you answer this girl?

>Answer her with reserved cheerfulness
The sort of small, polite smile that comes with extensive schooling to be an educated, proper lady, as befitting the time.

Behind the mask of elegance that has long since become second nature, we do appreciate the little girl's youthful exuberance, and our spirits are buoyed in kind.

No one saw that.

Her bright and cheerful demeanor brought a smile to your face, and you returned it to her in kind. You enthusiastically told her why you here, and the events that led up to it. She listened attentively, her eyes shining in childish fascination.

"Wow! So you are a noble! I bet you live in big mansion with lots of rooms to run around! I also bet that your bed is super big you can roll around back and forth without ever worrying about falling down! Whoosh!"

The girl start spinning, simulating her imaginations.

"But I guess it would be a pain to clean up huh? Then again, mom also told me that you nobles have lots of people help do the chores so I guess that's not really a problem huh? Must be really fun being a noble huh?"

Again you are bombarded with questions by this starry eyed girl. Before you could answer her questions however, she interrupts you.

"You said that you are going to start an apran-tis-ship with old man Xanathar right? Follow me then, I'll lead the way!

I will go to sleep this time for real

You follow her as she start running into the village, keeping up a brisk pace. It is amazing for such a delicate looking girl like her to move so fast and energetically.

As you enter the village, you passed by some houses and villagers. The girl managed to greet all 10 or so villagers as she runs ahead, much to your amazement. Soon after, you reach the village square and the girl finally stops for a moment, possibly to take a breather. This is soon proven to be wrong as she lengthily give you the directions for the village.

"If you go further more to the left you will find the market. There is where we sell lots of things like vegetables and meats! Sometimes big carriages carry those stuff away too! Mom said that those things will be te-rae-ded in big towns. Further to the right is the farmlands. There we grow our vegetables and raise our animals. I like to play there because its wide open and there is not much I could bump into! Go straight ahead and you could find old man Xanathar's house on the hill! You wont mi- OW OW!"

Out of nowhere, a woman starts to grab the girl by the ear and drag her away.

"Didn't I tell you to do your chores Selene! Why do you always make things harder for yourself!"

And the girl is dragged into the crowd, disappearing along with the woman. Your clothing brings you some amount of attention by the villagers. Whispers and murmurs can be heard. Do you...

Is there enough time to have a quick word with Selene's mother (or possibly caretaker) before she's dragged off? To say that she was very helpful to a newcomer like us, and ask that she not be too harsh on her. After, or failing, that:

You tried to follow Slene and what could possibly her mother dragging her by the ear through the square. Selene saw you, stopped for a second to wave at you causing her to be pulled away even faster. Her mother nagged her along the way.

With a slight chuckle you waved back at her and continue on your way to Xanathar's.

Leaving the village square, you passed a row of houses before reaching a hill. On top of it is the what is supposed to be the wizard's residence. A humble house, a bit larger than the others, but lacking the grandiose you would expect. Carrying your luggage up the hill prove to be quite hard, but you succeeded in doing it. Soon enough, you stand in front of the wizard's doorstep. You gave the door three knocks for good measure. After that, you...

You decided to look around the house for a bit. There are rows of hedges surrounding the house, trimmed neatly. Rows and rown of flower posts with healthy looking plants are also present. It's flowers' colours are vibrant and bright. It seems that the old wizard is quite the botanist, but you remembered that he is a wizard and he could have probably done it with a single snap of his finger.

You squat down to take a closer look at the flowers. They are indeed very beautiful and the scent they carry are soothing to the mind. Suddenly, you hear the door open. An old man can be heard shouting at you.

"GODS ABOVE, SELENE YOU DAMNABLE CHILD! I TOLD YOU TO NOT TOUCH MY PLANTS!"

Before you could make out what's happening, you feel a sharp pain on your head

THWACK!

Your vision starts to fade...

"Oh dear, it seems i hit her too- Wait you're not Selene! Oh dea-....."

--------------------------------------------

The first thing you see as you opened your eyes is a sharp sting on your head. You rub your head and felt a swollen lump on top of it. You tried to rise up from the bed you are lying on, but a hand stops you by your shoulder. An old man sat right next to the bed, his face is extremely pale and breaking cold sweat.

"Oh dear, please rest a moment more young lady. I thought it was that devil of a child Selene bothering my plants again. I only meant to give her a light smack on the head, but I'm afraid in my anger, I might have swung my staff a tad bit too fast..."

Holy...what would have happened had he smacked Selene that hard?

"I don't recognize your face. You're not from around here are you, young lady? I'm Xanathar, the Wizard of the West. Though, these days I prefer just going by Xanathar.", he said giving you a light chuckle.

You then...

You scold him for even thinking of hitting a child on the head with his staff, but still try to sound calm. The old man lowers his head and murmurs something under his breath, and when asked, he answered, "Nothing ma'am...".

What if it had been Selene who was hit on the head. What if her skull cracks or her eyes flung out of her head? What if she lost her memory or even worse, not wake up at all?

"B-but...had that child been hit by a horse, she would still be up and jumping as usual...."

Again you scolded him, this time for being unreasonable. As before, he just lowers his head and murmurs under his breath. Soon you regain your composure and the wizard starts talking again.

"Eh..well, right! I was expecting someone today, yes! My new-"

"Apprentice." you said to him

"-caretaker!"

You both look at each other in confusion. You state to him that your reason being here is because his daughter, the sorceress Melissa recommended you to him as an apprentice. The old wizard says that Melissa had promised to send him a caretaker to help him throughout his daily life. You sense something is wrong here and handed the letter to him. As he opened the sealed envelope and read it, his hands shake and his face froze. The air seem to grow colder. You then...

You ask Xanathar about what's written on the letter. He covered his face with his left hand and handed over the letter with the right. This is what was written on the letter....

Hey old man! Its your beloved daughter here! Remember that time when you said that you did not need a caretaker because you can take care of yourself well enough alone? Remember when I said that I will send one to you anyway? That is my original plan but something came up and i need to ask a favor from this one noble family to pull some strings for me. In return, I promised to send some good word to you, to ask you to let their daughter as your apprentice. He immediately accepted of course! To be the disciple of someone like you would bring much prestige to the family! Of course now I would like to ask your for your help so I can hold up MY end of the bargain. Hugs and kisses to you father dearest!

Xanathar with holds his face down facing the floor, out of embarrassment or out of anger, you do no know. You yourself are similarly shocked by this turn of event. After reading the letter, you...

A part of you is screaming, telling you to go back home now, that you have been tricked for the benefit of one person. Yet, another part of you says that you cannot let this once in a lifetime opportunity slip by.

You ask Xanathar if you can still be his apprentice and he answers...

"Sigh... Listen here young lady. I didn't take anymore apprentices for a long while now. The reason is not that I deem those who asked before unworthy, it is just that my days of dabbling in the arcane arts is over. I just want to spend the rest of my days in peace."

Hearing his answer, on the verge of tears you rise up from the bed saying that you understand and tell him that you will return home. Xanathar grabbed your hand, stopping you.

"No...it is not like that. Tell you what, I think we can both benefit each other here. I have told Melissa that i do not need a caretaker, but there are things this old rattling pile of bones cannot do with ease. Here is my proposal, will you be willing to leave your life as a noble and stay to help me? In return, I will pass on my knowledge to you. I promise you it will be worth your time."

You do not know if this is the wizard taking pity on you, though his eyes meeting yours sternly seemed to prove otherwise. You accepts his proposal, and he told you to move your luggage to an empty guest room upstairs. After finishing. Xanathar said that you can start working tomorrow morning. It is evening now. What will you do now?

You decided that you will explore the village square for the evening. Xanathar apologizes for the room's dustiness as it had not been used for quite some time. After you finish arranging your clothes and personal items in the room, you head out for the village square. Xanathar is reading a book in the living room, though he looks like he's about to doze off any second now.

You step down the hill and walk into the square. There are still people walking around, chatting under the shade of trees, carrying items out of shops and people walking into taverns to have some drinks with their friends. For a village this far from the capital, it is quite lively. As you look around, you hear a familiar voice.

"Hey lady! We meet again, hahah!"

There stood Selene as cheery as ever.

"So you met the old man righto? He's grumpy as ever so you probably got scolded by him for silly things like touching his flowers or something huh?", she asked with a naughty grin on her face.

Well it is true, you did get scolded by him, although it is a misunderstanding. He is the one who gets scolded afterwards though. You...

"Oh that? that's my mom! She always fuss over so much about little things like chores and all. Who cares if i didn't do my chores for a day? Actually all adults fuss too much over little things! Won't the world be more colourful if everybody just run around and play with each other?", Selene answers lengthily, pouting her cheeks.

Her mom huh? They don't look anything alike though. Actually Selene is the one who looked out of the ordinary. Her hair is silver in colour...like the glow of the moon... The woman you saw dragging her had an ordinary auburn hair colour. You did not indulge this line of thought long though as a lightly armored man approached Selene.

"Hey pipsqueak, bothering people again? Kahahahah!"

"I'm not a pipsqueak you meanie! Take this!" Selene answered, pouting her cheeks even more and kicking the man's leg, to no effect, much to her chagrin and the man's amusement. The man looks towards you after teasing Selene.

"Anyway, I've never seen your face around here. The name is Cain, Guard Captain of this village, though there is only like six other guards around here anyway. Kahahahah!"

"She came here to be old man Xanathar's apprentice! She also said that the old man's daughter gave a reko.. kommen... gave a good word out to him so that the old man will accept her!", Selene answers for you enthusiastically.

"Melissa huh? Haven't heard of her for a long, long time...", Cain said, staring blankly for a moment.

"Huh? You know the old man's daughter Cain?", Selene asks.

"It's brother Cain for you young lady! And yes, I once knew her. Back then she and I were young...so very young...", once again Cain drifts into his own thoughts...

"Hey, Selene. I think I heard your mom calling for you. Didn't she tell you not to stay outside late in the evening?", Cain suddenly said as you ask him about Selene's abnormal hair colour.

"Oh no! she's gonna blow up if I'm late again this time. Well, goodbye lady!", Selene said as she ran off into the tavern present in the village square.

Cain motioned for both of you to sit down on one of the benches in the square.

------------------

You both sat down on the bench. Cain lowers his body, arms on his legs and hand held together. He starts talking.

"Well since the little rascal is gone let's get to the point shall we? That girl, Selene, arrived at our villalge over a decade or so. Someone left a baby wrapped in white cloth in front of the tavern. Yes, that tavern over there." He says as he points towards the building he mentioned.

"The owner's daughter took the child as her own, acting like a mother to her. I think it is no surprise that Selene is adopted. I think even she knows it, but actively chose to ignore it. Us villagers are also perplexed by this incident. Selene grows up as healthy as any children, but her silver hair is most abnormal. Xanathar seems to know something about it, which seemed to be why he is retiring here."

How did you know the Wizard of the West? You seemed to already know him for a long time.

"Ah yes, Xanathar came to our village around 15 years ago alongside his daughter and a few other apprentices. I was close to his apprentices. He stays here for a few weeks to discuss something with the village's Elder and they left. That's all there is. Nothing more, nothing else." Cain said, ending the subject.

What are the things I can do in this town?

"Well young lady, there's not much variety, but it'll be worth your time....I think. First off is the tavern. The food there is great and the drinks are fine, although i rarely get out of the village so I have not much to compare. The market is lively in certain parts of the month, even more so on certain part of the year. The farmlands is a beautiful sight to behold actually, us being close to the mountains and all. You could also do some work on those respective places for extra money, just saying."

After that lengthy explanation, Cain rose up, dusting his backside.

"Well, young lady, time for you to go back to Xanathar's right? The sun's almost down. Wouldn't want to give the old man a heart attack for losing his apprentice on the first day righto? Kahahahah!"

Righto? You wonder if Selene's way of talking came from this man. Cain walks away, possibly to continue patrol, although this is proven to be wrong as he walked into the tavern.

It is now currently sundown. You then...

You decided to go back as not to worry the elderly wizard. Upon entering the house, a sweet smell of meat being cooked reaches your nose. Xanathar can be heard shouting at you from deeper inside the house, most likely in the kitchen.

"You're back? Dinner is not ready yet so how about taking a bath first. Make yourself at home!"

You shed your clothing and start washing your body. You took a feel on your head and the bump seem to have decreased in size. After that, you dipped your body into the tub, recalling the events of today. Today was really hectic as all hell....

-------

After you finish bathing, you dress up and ready yourself for a dinner. On the table is two plates, each containing a piece of grilled meat cooked well done, mashed potatoes and some vegetables.

"Eat up those veggies young lady. I do not tolerate wasting food in my house.", Xanathar said sternly. Perhaps you should take his orders seriously.

Both of you did not spoke a word during the meal, making the atmosphere really tense. After both of you finish the meal, Xanathar finally spoke.

"I don't like it. I don't like it one bit.", he said

You asked him what he did not like.

"I don't like it that I have to call you, young lady and all. We're going to be around each other for a while now for crying out loud, lass. It is partly my fault for not asking and you probably forgot to introduce yourself. What is your name?"

You introduce yourself. You are the 2nd daughter and youngest child of House Ravenspear

"Amelia Ravenspear....Ravenspear.... I've heard of your family name. Your family have quite the influence don't they? If I remember correctly, your ancestor, Adelhart Ravenspear was a companion of the legendary hero back when the demons invaded. A man whose resourcefulness is as famous as his talent for logistics. I think I have the gist of why Melissa chose your family to turn to."

The wizard went quiet for a moment before continuing.

"Well, anyways, do not expect me to call you "my lady", or anything of the sorts. In return I do not expect you to call me as "Master Xanathar" or "Wizard of the West". My glory days had long past now and I don't think I'm fit to hold those titles any longer..."

And that concludes your dinner on the first day. The wizard took his and your plates, putting it into the a wooden tub in the kitchen. Xanathar said that he will retire into his room for the night. He will however still be up until later as he wants to do some reading before sleep.

The night is still young. What will you do to pass the time?

You lay on your bed with but a candle lighting up the room. A book is randomly picked among the many dusty ones in your room's bookshelf. Upon inspection, this book is a volume one of the adventures of the Legendary Hero who saved your land from the Demon invasion centuries ago.

"And so begin the story of the great Hero of Light who saved our realm from the encroaching darkness of the demons. The hero was of a humble beginning, though his origin is that of kings. An illegitimate heir raised in the edges of the kingdom, unaware of his heritage. It would be told that the current king's son will be the hero to save the world, but all of them died leaving a single princess, much to the kingdom's despair. The king knows however that hope is all but lost, and sent his most trusted adviser and friend, the Wizard of the West, Barius. Wise and old, he scoured the land for the boy, narrowly saving the boy from the demons attacking his village and Barius accompanied the hero on his journey."

Or so the story goes. You've read all of the volumes a long time ago and this book refreshes your memory on it. Moments later, you feel sleepiness gripping your mind and you fell asleep.

Outside of the house, in the village square, a black robed figure roams around the street holding a small wooden bowl.

"Alms.....alms....alms....alms, for the dead..."
