"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

7th Kriegstrom Platoon

Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

The Fallen
The annals record those who have died in the line of duty under your command. Those whom you have failed.

‘Auntie’ Goodkind Throat ripped out by a Grenn wolfman during the storming of Kresden.

Pietre Verdun Struck down from behind in the storming of Kresden. No one saw where the blow came from.

Unhappy Sam Mauled to death by the Grenn during the storming of Kresden.

‘Snake’ Summarily executed for disobeying orders. Members of 7th Platoon refused to elaborate further.

‘White Bitch’ Tara Slain in the defence of the 7th Platoon campsite by Neumunster ambushers during the Northern Offensive.

Twice-in-One-Day Skewered by Neumunster swordsmen during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

’Kid’ Hewn in twain by a Neumunster halberdier during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

Regrets-the-Rain Struck down by a holy weapon of the Chevalisse Paladin orders on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Arlen Rivers Thrown from the walls by a Chevalisse Paladin on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Vendis Durvano Trampled to death in the mad rush to escape the Western Gate slaughter on Day Four of the Siege of Kresden.

Legless Jenny Consumed body and soul in an abominable Cultist experiment, binding her to a corrupted Albani Warmachine.

'Jack' Marcus Slain while retaking the North Tower, his sacrifice saved his squad and perhaps the Company.

Recap

It all comes down to this. Or several days of 'this'. Every choice you’ve made, every success and every failure. It’s all led to you and the Company fighting to stave off the marshalled strength of the entire Free Alliance from the walls of some northern town while you wait for your dread employer, The Necromancer to relieve you with his fell host. Maybe you fekked up somewhere along the line, but for the life of you its impossible to figure out exactly where.

You lost men, brothers. Some you didn’t know too well, it’s the harsh reality of your position as an Officer. A battle is one thing, hours of movement and running around followed by minutes of terror and screaming. One way or another, it's all over soon enough most of the time. Humans weren't meant for sieges, days and days on end of the same pants-shitting terror knowing it will happen all over again tomorrow, if they live that long.

You thrive in this hell, you and people like Bad Hand. You feel better now than you did before the siege started. But your lads... they're only human, you wonder how many will survive this. If any of them will. The butcher's bill grows steeper every day and you still don't know your esteemed employer will bother to keep you among the living. This is a tough time for the Company, the most desperate of measures are being taken to last out another day. Last night you killed a insubordinate officer who defied your Captain, and you still don't know if you did the right thing.

Perhaps half the Company now wouldn’t mourn your death, and those in the 4th Infantry would gladly give you that final, fatal nudge over a line you’ve been dancing on for years. But everything you have done, it's all been for the Black Company… hasn't it? Has it instead all been for Captain Kiranova? You’ve begun to wonder whether you would do anything asked of you by the cold-hearted queen of ice you love so dearly, even against the interests of the Company.

Or maybe none of the above is true. Perhaps you’ve always liked killing, and any moral hand-wringing done after the fact has been to assuage your own dark inclinations. You’re not just an officer, a cynic, a tired veteran of fighting for coin. You are a monster. But perhaps a monster is what the Black Company needs right now.

You have not shirked from any advantage to secure victory, to ensure that the Company survives. Black deeds, dark bargains, harsh choices. Your power quickens. That you will give in to the darkness has long been decided, all that's left to see is how much of Prince will remain once the bloody day is done.

The time of Prince's quickening has come. He has forsaken his soul and rejected the Law of the Gods and Man. He has been granted power beyond that of many of his unnatural peers. He has sacrificed his immortal soul for the power to save the Black Company. Prince considers that a bargain.

Free Alliance Siege Lines, Day 4 of the Seige of Kresden, Early Evening

”I haddae my full of this waiting around, ye ken? I’m going o’er to make a mincemeat pie outta that there bonny ‘Black Prick’” The Highlander raises his voice, as if daring the de-facto leader of the Free Alliance to try and stop him.

”Ahm comin’ too, Da!” A snot-nosed whelp, grimy faced and determined in the way only the very young can be.

”Ye are bloody not, Kenny.” His father, or so he assumed, snorted. ”Back to the hills with ye, scamp!”

”But Da!” Kenny protests, scrunching his face up so he doesn’t shame himself with tears. ”Ah can fight!”

”Och, I hae nay doubt about that, lad.” The towering clansman’s voice softens, taking a knee and placing a heavy hand on the boy’s shoulder. ”I know ye can fight. But if I die and make a song, who’ll be singing it? Your sisters? “

The boy shakes his head, in the Isabella Clans women sung of love, peace and home. Only men sung of war. His father nods.

”Nay, ye see? I’ll need a man to be singing my Song before Her Ladyship. It has to be you, lad.”

At the other side of the command tent The General does not respond to the scene, his face buried in his hands. He has never looked more deflated. The command tent looks very different from the first meeting four days ago, it is all but empty apart from the General and the Isabella clansmen. The senior ranks of the Legions has been decimated, the Chevalisse chivalry lost some of their best knights yesterday and the elven officers haven’t reported in since this morning. Helmer dan Jorst, still technically a retired Major without official rank, is even now still trying to get a picture of how disastrous today has been for the Free Alliance both in the cost of manpower and time. Even the Paladin Grandmaster is recovering from his injuries. His Pegasus steed died of the burns from the Dragon, but not before it faithfully carried its wounded rider back to the siege lines.

”I have failed. My Emperor, my men… the Empire itself… Even the loss of two eagles, the shame… it’s all my fault.” The General’s voice is heavy with despair.

”Why? We ye there?” The Highlander frowns scratching his ginger beard. ”If ye were, and ye cut an’ run, well that’s yer own fault for being a yellow-bellied, mustache-twirling, soft-skinned southerner who lost his wee gaudy bird baubles.”

”Oh, I’m sure they did at that. Still, they were there and they lost. But ye weren’t and ye did didn’t, so it ain’t yer fault, aye?” The muscled giant gives the Neumunster commander a hearty slap on the back, exceedingly proud of his own reasoning.

”O’Brien, ye done flapping your lips? The lads is getting restless.” Another highlander in a green kirtle, cleanshaven and a handsome figure to the southern gals, pokes his head in impatiently. The clansman leader nods

”Why? Why bother fighting again?” The Neumunster general, perhaps the most senior ranking official in whatever was left of the Neumunster Empire, looks up at the towering red-maned colossus despondently. ”Even if you carry the walls…. Even if you sieze the town and slay this bastard Prince… It won’t matter. Our Alliance won’t be in any position to respond to a winter offensive… We’ve lost.”

”Aye, that’s a problem. Your problem, I ken. But I did nae wander o’er half a bloomin’ continent to pass up the tussle of a century. If I can match blades with this Princey ponce, all this walkin’ won’t have been for nought.” The Highlander nods, perhaps having convinced himself. ”Besides, you want the man who took your wee baubles dead, aye?”

The Neumunster leader thinks about all the men that monster has turned into corpses. Good patriotic men, fighting without rest for the future of the Empire, for the future of their wives, sons and daughters. He did not need to consider whether he wanted the men that had murdered them dead for long.

” ‘Aye’, clansman. I want him dead.”
The Highlander’s grin is toothy, wide and has all too much of a madman’s glint to it. He pats the massive Claymore, longer than some halberds, with unrestrained glee. ”Och, I think I can help yon with that.”
Kresden Walls - West Gate, Day 4 of the Seige of Kresden, Early Evening

”Two Eagles! Two. Bloody. Eagles!” CPL Hirstun of Ligh seems ecstatic as he clutches at the stolen standards. You’ve never seen him so emotional, his face threatens to burst into tears and even his fellow surviving ‘Dozen’ are grinning at each other like madmen. There is no love lost between the huscarls of the Northern Coast and the men of the Empire. "This might be the best day of my life..."

”All the Neumunster we killed in the Northern Coast… losing again and again. And today we kicked them in the teeth so hard we took a bloody eagle.” Trooper Crackfoot’s normally nasty smile is instead an almost rapturous expression. He’s cradling one of the standards like a newborn babe.

”Fekking hell… I never thought I’d see one. Up close that is.” Trooper Godric Golden seems hesitant to reach out and touch the Eagles, afraid that it will all prove to be an illusion. ”I wish Arlen Rivers could see us now…”

Jeg forstår ikke. Hmph. Soft southerners lofte… er, worship? Sotherners worship this gold things?”
LCPL Lerrek Jurgensen asks quizzically, scratching his unkempt ginger beard for the hundredth time that day. This time it is to a good purpose though, as his scratching untangles half a bloody finger that had caught in his beard. You are unsure whether it belongs to friend of foe, the Kreigstrom are not the sort of hardened fighters to complain overmuch about a shortened digit.

”Something like that, Lance-Corporal.” You nod, watching the scene with a small amount of bemusement and a great deal of price. ”Something very much like worship indeed…”

”Corporal Saint.” You rasp, the white haired ex-Heigelen appearing at your side in moments.

”Sir!” She snaps to attention, CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus’ discipline must have had an effect.

”It’s getting dark. As soon as that sun goes down I want Lord Lorgia brought me. Instruct the thralls that he is summoned, then return as quickly as possible.” Your voice is sinister and menacing even to your own ears, but none of the Kreigstrom flinch. They're used to it.

”Yes, sir!” If there is any indication of the grief, hardship and trauma Saint has been through over the last few days it doesn’t show through her hard eyes.

”You always were a cunning one, brother.” Your faithful Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ Hadrien chuckles as CPL Saint runs off with the message. ”What have you got brewing in their spooky helm of yours?”

>“A Raid.” Hitting, burning and stealing the Free Alliance supplies, equipment and fire the storerooms. They’re already hungry, they can’t afford to lose any more. The Neumunster waves in particular will suffer. [Clever]

“A Massacre.” Slaughtering as many commoners as possible. Sleeping, non-combat and wounded. Make the sun rise over a grisly nightmarish scene. [Experience]

“A Murder.” Decimating the elite ranks will be your priority. It’s easier to kill Hiegelen Guard or Chevalisse Knights as they race from their tents than on the field. [Elite]

Honestly, destroying their ranks seems like the best approach in the short term, which is best since the point is to last a few days for reinforcements, not months, which makes a raid less effective.
>>
>>2296688
Therenot staying here for months

A raid would distroy then as well

They only have a few days befor there fucked
Well at this point there fucked ether way

Also we could gett some of them sloders to boast our ranks after this fight
>>
>>2296724
A massacre would take out a good number of troops that won't be there the next day and heavely demoralize them, a raid wouldn't change too much because we only need to last another day or two anyway. A raid just won't hurt as bad in the short term, which is more of a priority.

”You always were a cunning one, brother.” Your faithful Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ Hadrien chuckles as CPL Saint runs off with the message. ”What have you got brewing in their spooky helm of yours?”

”A Massacre.” The word sounds dire indeed, wrapped with malice and evil intent by your Blackthorn armour. If it even is the armour that makes you sound like that. ”Kill as many of them as possible, in the most brutal fashion possible. Enough to make them sick at the sight of it. Enough to make them desert.”

”Ouch.” Even Bad Hand has to wince. ”You know I’ve never shirked from some dark work, but do you really reckon all they lads here can say the same?”

”It won’t be the Kreigstrom doing the murdering this time, brother. It’s about time the Vampires pulled their weight beyond a few night-patrols.”

You’re interrupted by the return of 2nd squad. The members of 2nd Squad look like Below. Leading them is the tall, ponytailed LCPL ‘Hard’ Hida, the newest addition. One side of your helm is wrapped from some powerful blow, but she appears otherwise unharmed.

The hulking Wildborn Trooper Smiles and the friendly escaped slave Trooper Belhamun carrying a wounded Trooper Schuster between their shoulders. She moans and squirms dramatically, but the wound on her leg appears superficial.

”Where is Corporal ‘Jack’?” If he isn’t here with the squad, he’s dead. But you have to ask anyway.

Trooper Nissar Belhamun shakes his head. Ma ismuk La… I sorry, Loo-tanant. He was good Emir.”

LCPL ‘Hard’ Hida finally manages to wrench her damaged helmet off, blinking as she gives her stone-cold report. ”Orders complete, sir, North Tower retaken. One wounded, minor, Trooper Schuster. One killed in action, Corporal Marcus. I recommend that a special mark for bravery be entered in the Annals for Corporal Marcus.”

You wait for a more detailed account of how your old junior-NCO died, but that’s it. LCPL ‘Hard’ Hida doesn’t seem to be the storytelling sort. If you wanted a more detailed account of how 2nd Squad retook the North Tower with the Ajiyimad mercenaries, and how CPL ‘Jack’ died, you might have made time to investigate yourself. It’s enough to know that he is dead, you don’t feel the need to see his corpse being raised.

At least he didn’t have to see his old Legion shamed by the loss of their Legio Eagle.
”You’ll live, Schuster.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ nods, waving over a few Company Supply corpsmen to take a look at her leg. ”Get that cleaned and wrapped up, then back to your position.”

”But boss!” Trooper Joker begins to whine, happy for a bit of malingering after a day like this.

”No buts, Trooper.” Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ shakes his head. ”Trooper ‘Brittle’ is fighting with half-a-hand, I’m sure you can suck it up and do the same.”

”Det kommer flere av dem!” One of the Skalds, Trooper Hans Rusti, shouts in his barbarian tongue, pointing over the ramparts. A haunting, grating sound carries over the wind.

”CPL ‘Jack’ and I didn’t always see eye to eye, but he was a damn good soldier. What the hell is that sound?” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ is understating the number of times his boisterousness and CPL ‘Jack’s stickling to the rules and protocol caused them to knock heads. But SGT Bad Hand has always viewed members of the Company as nothing less than family.

”Pipes.” CPL Hirstun of Ligh scowls. ”Of course I end up fighting fekking clansmen on the same day I take an eagle.”

”Highlanders.” CPL Hirstun shrugs. “They’re madmen.”

”I’ve heard they’re fekking good fighters. And the balls on them! To attack just before dark…” SGT Bad Hand grins at the prospect, always a few horses short of a stable. ”This is shaping up to be a fantastic fekking day! Oh and Prince, 2nd Squad needs a new Corporal. We’re understrength but we can have them direct the ragtag survivors from other units.”

”Understood, sir.” The comments of the other squad members don’t seem to bother her. Maybe she’s having trouble giving a damn when she’s already lost one entire squad before at Oxenfurt Bridge.

”Schuster, 2nd squad is short a Lance-Corporal. Time to shape up.” Trooper ‘Joker’ Schuster’s limp is nowhere near as pronounced as earlier, and she stiffens at your voice. ”You’re it until you’re dead, or until I find someone better.”

”But, boss…” Trooper Schuster looks horrified at the prospect of promotion. ”I’ve always been best at saving me own skin, I can’t… if I fek it up…”

”Don’t fek hit up then.” SGT Bad Hand says gruffly. ”Besides. Better pay.”

”You had me at better pay.”

”That’s literally the last thing I…”

”Enough.”

You tire of this. Not physically of course, you’ve never felt stronger. But your cohort of vicious killers are a resource that is dwindling, you are well aware of the consequences of pushing mortals past their breaking point. And dealing with human banter isn’t as… invigorating as it used to be.

Best to settle this, and settle it quickly. You don’t even need to kill the clansmen, just delay them long enough for the Vampires to swing the tide.

”Let’s get this over with.”

>Into the Breach!: Add +1d6DC each Combat Round as scattered Alliance forces trickle in
>Command Tent Overrun!: Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova is added to the potential casualty roster. Most of the other Black Company officers are already dead.

”Ohh this is bad. This is very, very bad.” The newly-promoted Lance-Corporal Caroline ‘Joker’ Schuster is the first on the scene, her gammy leg forgotten.

”Déan bealach!” A man wearing nothing but a green dress splits a Black Company trooper wearing full-plate armour clean in half. Blood spatters into his open mouth as he laughs with unbridled ferocious joy. There are over a score of crazed lunatics just like him running amok in the Company lines. Every below-damned one of them wields a massive two-handed blade and looks like they eat trebuchet ammo for breakfast.

They are by no means immortal, a dozen olive-and-navy covered figures dot the broken stonework surrounding the breach. But they do not fear death, not in the slightest. While the Black Company infantrymen and rangers have a sane respect for it, while they attempt to regroup and form ranks the Clansmen again race forward and scatter them. They fight like rabid dogs, ignoring blades thrust through sides to make a killing blow and then take another three or four opponents down before breathing their last. The clansmen Neumunster, Chevalisse and even an elf or two trickle in behind the gap the Highlanders have carved open.

”I dinnae believe THESE are the bonny lads that have been smackin’ the Alliance in the gobbers for the past few days.” A mountain of a man looms over the carnage in the dying light, his massive Claymore held over his shoulder. ”Come out and hae a to-do wi’ me, Black Prince! Come out ya night-wielding ninny, so I can string ye up be yer dangly bits!”

It’s going to be a long night.

I love the crazy bastard, but Saint has objectively speaking better skills. Not to mention that sending her to defend the very person she hates sounds really dumb.

Anyway, a few things I'd like to note for the upcoming battle:
- the average Highlander is likely better than the average Neumenster. Which means that fighting a lot of them in Personal Combat may not be a smart option, this time.
- One the blades Saint could acquire was blessed by the Lady of clan Isabella, whose power was to "ignore any attack borne from Magik that would affect you or your cohort will be dispelled on a single 50DC roll". I bet my ass we're going to see something similar, so CotN might not be as useful.
- If these are true, perhaps spamming To Me! + Pistol to kill the leader as fast as possible might our best chance of victory. Maybe we could do a poor man's MBFH too, thanks to the excess HP we have?
- Not really related, but Gruesome should also add +1 Discipline Damage when we use Orders like Onwards You Dogs!. Which means that Neumenster Cohor was at -9/8 Discipline. Topkek.

The neumunster were pack killers, trained to work together to effectively take down a target through TEAMWORK, These guys should be harder individually, but logically they wouldn't be able to work together as well, and even should probably end up getting in each other's way with their massive swords and desires to be glory hounds. If forgotten can make that translate(or is even willing to) is a different matter.

Updates will have to be done throughout the week, I won't have time for long sessions. I'm also very hungover. On the plus side that will give me plenty of time for some lengthy and gory battle scenes between each set of rolls.

The pastebin for the 7th Kreigstrom and Prince have finally been updated. I've moved some of Prince's abilities to the order section since they were having the same affect. While Prince no longer suffers from fatigue, his men certainly do. It's not much of a spoiler to tell you this will be one of the hardest battles Prince and the 7th Kreigstrom will have faced yet.

I see there is already some discussion on the best approach, very good!

You decide not to entrust the life of your Captain to someone that has declared their hate for them. Bad Hand is just a regular mortal man with no magik blade, but he won't back down give that he is as mad as any Highlander. You just hope that it doesn't get him killed.

As I pointed out earlier, Highlanders most likely have stuff that nullifies Magik. Triggering CotN right off the bat seems unwise unless we know their skillset.

Second, given how Carnotaur works we should stack as many bonuses as possible before hitting these bastards hard, which is why To Me + Pistol will have to be used next turn (for a whopping + 70 DC). For now, we must suck it up and hope the re-roll and damage reduction do their job.

Aside from Prince never suffering fatigue, yes that's all you get. Material from the Cultist Jale (and, if we're being honest, goodwill) just aren't in place right now to take full advantage of the souls that you are reaping.

It's a gluttonous and wasteful expenditure of soul energy that would have any daemon shaking their head in disapproval.

Ah, the good old RIP N' TEAR Carnotaur/Pistol combo. [it was close between Office/To Me and Dicsiple/CotN, but the former scraped through in the end.

Voting for that many potential extra highlander opponents may prove to be a poor choice.
As other anons have mentioned, these aren't your standard Neumunster rank-and-file.
The Highlander's would probably be the equivalent of the Free Alliance's 7th Kriegstrom.

Yeah. Although I suppose that we could always speak to Page #137 since, you know, he's actually a demon. And he kinda likes us, so he might be easier to talk to.

Speaking of the little bugger, what does he think of Prince after the latter flipped the bird at the Dark Father? That he's cray cray?

Well at least people smartly chose the pistol + To Me! for a +70 bonus on our end.

So we even out with +10 since Saint's Officer Material gives us a free order.

> As I pointed out earlier, Highlanders most likely have stuff that nullifies Magik. Triggering CotN right off the bat seems unwise unless we know their skillset.

It would just end a draw as they spend an order to cancel our order.

But your vote was the right choice for if people chose to fight 2d3 highlanders. Like fools.

Because that +10 balance is BEFORE O'Brien does any other actions.

> Well at least people smartly chose the pistol + To Me! for a +70 bonus on our end.
Yeah no, To Me bonus applies next round, so it's just a straight + 30 this round.

> It would just end a draw as they spend an order to cancel our order.
> implying they need an Order to do that
If Saint's Isabella blade could passively dispel magic, I don't see why Highlanders shouldn't have it as well.

> Because that +10 balance is BEFORE O'Brien does any other actions.
So. You know. Not quite as tactical planning as you might have hoped.
I don't know what you're on about but you seem salty.

>>2300979
Duh, but it was mentioned that demons should also hate Prince now. So I'm kinda curious to see if that applies to Page #137 or he simply dislikes Below too much to care.
>>
>>2300987
I am a little salty that we got a GM "Are you sure you want to do this" about taking on too many Highlanders.

And you're right about only getting +30 this round.

This makes me saltier.
>>
>>2300993
Let me put it this way.

On one hand, you can have Prince face the enemy leader while his squad prays to Dice Gods. That way leads to a lot of salt.

On the other hand, you can have 7th Kriegstorm safer while Prince gets whacked around by fekking barbarians. That way also leads to salt.

You can't run from salt. Just accept it and hope for the best.

Yes, and when some roll would have doomed a squad member, you would have had salt. A more apt phrasing would be "You could have had less salt by not rolling a fekking nat 100".
>>
>>2301344
Guess what happens when prince dies in a gangbang with a bunch of men in skirts?
All. Of the salt.
All.
ALL.
ALL/.
>>
>>2301344
Nah, people have been dying and it's been a thing.

Nobody has had salt about anyone except Jenny not even Kid. I mean. Aside from the choice to not use "Stay Back, Kid!" in exchange for +5 to the DC.

But that was a pretty unanimous choice.

I'm just saying that picking 2d3 more people to fight, giving the enemy +60 to his DC, is about on the same level as choosing to not protect Kid.

If I had known that people were going to vote to fight so many Highlanders, I definitely would have gone with Sword & Addled this turn, to go full Pistol & Carnataur next turn after "To Me".

>Nobody has had salt about anyone except Jenny not even Kid. I mean. Aside from the choice to not use "Stay Back, Kid!" in exchange for +5 to the DC.
So, you just admitted there was a lot of salt over Kid's death. Because you can't really separate choice and consequence.
And I still don't regret it, btw.

Seriously though, both you and this >>2301351 anon need to take a chill pill. We haven't really rolled yet, we don't even know the Highlander's stats and you're already bitching.

Shitposting in downtime is a time honoured tradition.

> So, you just admitted there was a lot of salt over Kid's death.

Yes, I was being what is called Facetious.

As for waiting for the rolls, whether or not we succeed isn't the reason to be salty. Picking an increased level of risk with no solid plan for it is.

+60. That's reason for Salt, since it's before we even know his other modifiers.
>>
>>2301461
It's not like we can soild plans when we know almost nothing about our foes, though I'd say saving more of our men isn't usually a terrible plan.

And boy, if a +60 makes you so salty, I can only imagine how you felt when we fought all those Neumenster. Those were a straight +70.

That would cost them an order too if they use it. We could have done CotN this round, and then they would be forced to counter it the next round (IF they have one) wasting an order then that we could capitalize on.

It's like you've never played a counter-deck before. Gotta bait them out then capitalize on them needing to play a counter.
>>
>>2304281
>We'll pull through somehow

That kind of thinking has been proven wrong time and time again in this quest.
>>
Serious question for Forgotten if he sees this: the first CotN goes off,the squad auto-succeeds the first Battle Progress roll. Then, if we activate Onward You Dogs in the same turn!, it means we auto-inflict 2 Discipline Damages correct?

>7th Kriegstrom replace Black Banner with Black Company Regimental Standard [+15DC]

The Highlanders are far from immortal. Some maddened clansmen can ignore almost any spearpoint, sword or arrow tries to slow them down in the pursuit of a fight. Nothing short of death will prevent a Highlander from scoring just one more kill before they breath their last. The two-handed blades that Kreigstrom do much more ruin to the flesh than any blow from a spearpoint or bolt ever could. Legs torn off, arms severed, heads decapitated and whole bodies split in twain. The will of a man, or any creature, does not survive or persevere through that kind of damage. Or, if it does, its ability to fight isn’t worth much anyway. The Highlander's really should have invested in some decent fekking armour.

”You stupid fekking cunt.” LCPL ‘Joker’ Schuster hisses as she slides a danger into the armpit of a barbarian trying to chew CPL Hida’s face off. ”Even fekking chainmail would have helped ya, fekking sheep-fekkers.”

”3rd Squad, hold the centre! 2nd Squad, wheel round and cut off that breach!”
As LT Prince dives into the midst of the enemy, again, it falls to CPL Saint to direct much of the actual tactics involved in the fight. She takes to it almost more naturally than Prince ever did. She was, after all, a highborn used to being obeyed before she joined the Heigelen and became a Captain there. She has the perfect combination of blood, training and hard-earned ruthlessness that will one day make a great leader. But under LT Prince the 7th Kriegstrom have become very, very good at turning orders into bloody results. ”1st Squad, push up the right flank and stop any of them getting into the streets! Give them Cold Steel, Kriegstrom!”

”Cold Steel!” The shout goes up, the controlled and disciplined savagery of the Company men begins to quickly overwhelm the sheer ferocity of their opponents.

”Just take the shot, brother!” Trooper Smiles roars as he holds down one Clansman furiously gnawing at his arm, his other clawed hand pinning down the leg of another Highlander that lifts their massive claymore above the greyskinned Wildborn for a killing blow. Trooper Smiles shuts his eyes tight as Trooper Nissar Belhamun’s hands flicker with eldritch power and flick out and turn the two enemies into faintly glowing statues.

” Hal Haatha, ahki?” The dark-skinned Trooper looks genuinely hurt at Smiles’ surprise that he himself is unscathed by the wave of magik energy. ”You am think I use spell that be hurting to you also?”

”The odds of you having control over who your spells hit, given your previous track record…” The hulking monster scratches one of his arching horns with something almost approaching bashfulness.

La! Never be telling me these odds!”

[2/5]
>>
>>2307042
Elsewhere on the battlefield LT Prince has his hands full. A collection of particularly vicious grinning Highlanders begin to circle him.

”Heheheh. Maybe they are but this one don’t look like much.” A raggedy madman that looks like he hasn’t washed or shaved since birth leers at you with a crooked grin, it would be easier to count the teeth he has left than what’s missing. But his blade is sharp and his stance acceptable, so you don’t discount him as a threat. ”Let me have a go at him first!”

”Careful, Bruce.” Says one of the Highlanders to the left of the big one, quite naked except for a patterned loincloth and the blue paint covering him all along one side. He eyes your drawn Ajiyimad pistol with a respectable degree of caution. ”I doubt he’s holding that stick for the fun of it.”

”Fek off, Hamish. The Stars an' Moon whispers ta me, and they tell me where I die and when and it ain’t fekking here. And it ain’t fekking now!” Your aim switches from their leader to the madman as he comes at you, no rush at all. He practically walks into the muzzle of your matchlock pistol as your pull the trigger. The front of Bruce the Loon’s face exits through the back of his skull as he takes the full impact of the blast at point-blank rage.

”Hmm.” You remark with some amusement. You have never actually shot someone in the head at that close range before, not even that one time with the Cultist Quartermaster, and the results are spectacular. ”I guess his Stars and Moon were full of it.”

The Highlanders do not react to the inglorious death of their comrade with the rage or shock that you expected.

”Gads damn it, Bruce.” The bald-headed clansmen to the right of the tall one, this one being the only Highlander present sporting a beard of brown rather than red, shakes his head in exasperation. ”He jus fekkin’ tol you.”

The massive Highlander in the centre doesn’t look away from you for a moment, but the great blade swings down from his shoulders to plant blade first in front of his foot. He leans forward, frowning. ”That were cheatin’, ye Black Bastard.”

”Nice shooting, Lieutenant.” An all-too familiar female voice sounds in a playfully mocking tone from behind you. ”I heard you had a present for me. Something about an eagle?”

”Bad Hand!” Your head snaps to the right, your baleful eye glowing in fury. ”I told you to get her out of here!”

”Oh come-fekking-on!” Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ looks anything if cowed, one hand clutching a bundle of black silk. In fact he appears outright indignant. ” YOU try bloody well telling her what to do, brother!”

”Don’t blame him for escorting me here, Prince.” Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova grins at you, wounded arm wrapped in cloth and her pale face and blue hair spattered with blood. It does not appear to be hers, and you find yourself almost fatally distracted by her chilling beauty. ”He was only following orders.”

”Aright, enough o’ ye blathering ye noisy blue popsicle.” The giant Highlander cricks his neck, the look the Captain gives him to curdle milk. ”Ahm of a mind to avenge Bruce wit’out further ado. Let’s get to it.”

This is no place for the Captain, but you can’t afford to argue right now. Your blade is still poised forward towards the Highlander threat, though much of their swagger is gone. Your sigh of exasperation more closely resembles a growl. ”Hrrn… like old times then.”

”Yes, my Prince.” The smile the Captain reserves for her enemies is every bit as cold and cruel as those she grants to you most of the time, and they love it far less than you. ”Just like old times.”

Sergeant Bad Hand passes her the bundle of black silk and cloth with near-veneration, rough hands disturbingly tender in the handling of this Company relic. The wind catches as the Captain unfurls the Black Company Regimental Standard, a banner nearly as old as the annals themselves, and even your blackened, wretched heart is moved by the sight.

The tallies and victory marks, trophies and records against names you don’t recognise in places you have never heard of. Again and again, the most famous stories of the Company’s Greats have been copied from the Annals and sown into the massive flag itself, or added on to extra strips of cloth, silk and line until the whole thing becomes a patchwork of stories almost as worshiped by the brothers and sisters of the Company as the original Annals writings themselves.

Your great blade sweeps up to the sky, sword defying the Highlander’s, the Heavens and the Hells. Asgroga feels it as he soars through the clouds in the dimming sunset, weary but watchful, and roars in unison answering the call of Power. Lord Lorgia the Vampire Lord feels it as he drowsily takes his first sip from a thrall, red eyes widening in animal fear. Somewhere the Superior Syka wrinkles her nose with a scowl and even the Necromancer turns his head ever so slightly.

No man, dragon, God or daemon could ignore the challenge the Power that rips from your throat in a sonorous bellow echoing across the battlefield of singing madmen and shouting soldiers. ”Come, my Kreigstrom! TO MEEEEE!”

Hmm, this might not convince anyone but I'd like to point that if we go Sword of Sovereignity + CotN we get a DC 95, while Harkenoff Blade + CotN gives us DC 80.

Moreover, with the latter we -must- re-roll the highest non-Crit result, even a success. So that blade won't save us from a nat 100 but could even force us to critfail against our will.

Prince basically stole power from a god. His source of increasing power is cutoff. He told the dark father go fek himself.

He does have options though...

This could be anything from harnessing demons, service to another deity, or service to another powerful being. The cost of such power would be disturbing to say the least.

It’s bad if I want Prince to embrace Kiranova lofting her onto his shoulders and cheer to her glory and command when we kill all the highlanders, isn’t it? With the confession of true love again...
I’m in the wrong quest, the romantic is showing again, right?
>>
>>2309199
Doesn't mean Asgorga couldn't act for the benefit of others if it served his own interests.

He could end up saving more people than Prince ever did.

He could end up saving even a single war orphan and do better than Prince. Probably not because Forsaken has a tragedy boner.

How could they hold out?
>>
>>2309756
Strength of man yadayada stuff prince doesn't really hold true, most of the empire is still there, magistrates governors and nobles etc, it's just none of them are in a position for any further warfare, unlike chevalisse they don't have a million poncy bluebloods and a church bleeding the country dry.

It's less about holding out and more about the terms of surrender and rebuilding what's left and restructuring what isn't their anymore.

The blades of you and the giant Highlander, O’Brien they call him, clang with shocking clarity with each blow. Unnatural might fuelled by dark powers is pitted against human strength and fury with every strike. To his credit the Highlander colossus doesn’t appear the slightest bit tired. He could do this all day.

The Highlanders are brave to the point of insanity and jump at the chance of a scrap. But they don’t fight stupid like the Chevalisse Paladins do with ‘honour’. Like your own Company they have no problems with fighting dirty. A Clansmen with a missing eye to match your own comes up behind you and swings his claymore in a deadly arc, passing through the air where your neck was a moment ago. A killing blow, maybe even for you. You turn your duck into a crouch, two-handed blade pointed straight up into the upper abdomen of the Highlander still pivoting from his ambitious swing.

”Ah. Fek.” The blade erupts through the overconfident clansman with such force that much of his spine is clearly visible to those present, severed roughly at nipple height. All the combatants involved are too hardened to death and gore to let it affect them much. Even then, such a distraction might have proven battle for you if SGT Bad Hand hadn’t charged their leader and forced him to ignore your exposed side.

The Highlander leader “O’Brien” expresses his displeasure at being slams his forehead into the face of your old brother in black. Bad Hand jolts back, practically floored, as the Highlander lifts his massive weapon up for another blow.

Cairsun the Morning parries the next effort, managing by some miracle to turn it away. Sparks fly and eldritch energy licks out as one weapon of pure Magik strains against another.

Meanwhile CPL Hirstun of Ligh and his surviving ‘Dozen’, Crackfoot and Godric Golden, help SGT Bad Hand back to his feet.
The Sergeant reels away, laughing, as the spilt blood from a badly broken nose pours into his mouth. ”Fek me! Watch out for this one, sister!”

”I am a little busy here, Sergeant!” Kiranova snaps, parrying a blow from the woad-painted nudist. Kiranova was always good with a blade, but not the best. It was her intelligence, mean-streak and ability to always think three steps ahead of the foe that propelled her up the ranks.

”Come here you fekkin’ skinny little-“ The naked clansman shouts with frustration, then yells with joy as his blade sinks in, hilt-deep, into the red-armoured figure that steps in front of the Captain. The clansman tugs, frowns at the caught blade, then tugs again. His eyes widen as the impaled ‘Mask’ slices the hand holding the blade clean off.

”Ah, I see why you keep this thing around for, Liuetenant.” Kiranova nods approvingly.

”Hrrnk”. ‘Mask’ grunts, almost a reprimand. This ‘thing’ indeed.

There are scores of scattered Free Alliance foes left still trickling through the breach but, of the famed Highlander Clansmen, only a handful remain. All around the men press to your side, the Black Company Regimental Standard fluttering high above the panting, blood spattered killers in armour as black as night and wielding steel as bloody as a butcher’s knife. The men are exhausted, on their last legs even, but not one of them does not flock to the banner, to the Captain, to You as they have been bid. You and the 7th like something out of a storybook, except the barbarians are supposed to be fighting for the good side, or whatever the little mortals call the correct side of meaningless morality.
Your ‘blind’ eye, though now you see so much more through it than most mortals could comprehend, glows a fierce red as the night approaches. True night yes, but also your own brand of darkness that slips in between the rushing feet of the combatants. As the first eerie howl wails into the sky, the sun has never set so quick over Kresden.

[2/4]
>>
>>2309793

”Aweeel.” The shaven-headed clansmen to the right, McNiel, shakes his head in disappointment, the battle clearly lost but too proud to turn tail. ”ta think it will come to the end, the Band over and dun with, so quick.”

”Ah will no die content until I’ve given yon Night-lovin’ Nancy a propa taste of THIS!” He slaps his dour comrade with the missing hand on the back with a hearty laugh. O’Brien smiles with unbridled joy as he twirls his weapon and sets his eyes on the prize. You. ”Let’s give the lads back home something to SING aboot!”

The once-invisible writing on his blade, taller than most men and some Wildborn, begins to glow. You can smell the earthly scent of a woman and the sound of flowing stream and pipes, even though their pipe-players lies slain not a stones throw away from you. Powerful Magik indeed. But being cast from very, very far away.

You fear them not, nor their leashed dog.

My own, I wanted a fluid way to represent choices made in the quest actually being represented in a solid way as success in the field or off of it.

It has some serious weaknesses no doubt, and the system for the next quest has most of kinks worked out. I will be play-testing it in the /qtg/-general sometimes before we actually start though.

We are nearing the end of the quest, that is true. I'll be awarding a skill point for that amazing double-crit at the end of this thread, but this will be a selection from existing skills.

I hope that Kresden's siege has proven to be an appropriate climax rather than just a hellish Planet Namek experience.

I would love to use To Me! again too, but I guess that since the Highlander are dead next round that's impossible. Anyway, between HBFM use, Saint's Officer Material and 2 Battle Progress re-rolls, we should have good chances to not receive casualties this round - which is what matters.

Anons have roleplayed a grim and increasingly merciless veteran merc fantastically. I'd like to see we do on the other end of the spectrum.

Of course, you can't have a proper paladin-sort (sans magic) without offering the temptation of sin and perhaps redemption.

Other than that I'm not sure what you mean. Half of the first session will revolve around establishing the character's origin and demeanor. Anons can play a brooding, cynic with a humble determination to serve the commonfolk. Or they can play a boisterous, idealist determined to become the greatest knight in the world.

I honestly like the idea of playing a ultra patriotic fucker with a minor in naivety and a major in FAITH who's trying to pick up after the fuckery that was the black company single handedly bending the alliance over the counter that is if we're even in the same setting/timeline

Basically captain america
>>
>>2311729
Captain America was anything but Naive. He was a realist who took the stance that people had to be better because they could easily be worse, and that there was only conviction and faith keeping them from doing so.
>>
>>2311768
pretty much this, Cap was the guy that sees the shitshow the world is, and will still fight to make them good old American ideals a reality, rather than just fantasy. Though the idea of being the Paladin/knight hero that ends up being the one that beats the Necromancer/ rivals the Black Prince sounds fun as hell, and a nice contrast to the misery filled, dark path that Prince went down. To be honest, most "villain/black knights" in games never really get into the thick of that stuff, it's just cooler armor and looser morals which makes the whole thing just feel like an edgey mess for teenagers to drool over and gush. Black Company Quest did such a good job with whole characterization of becoming a character like that and the emotional baggage that comes with it. I'd love to see how Forgotten and the players would do with a heroic type and the struggles they would face. Though the other quest ideas that Forgotten has put up for after this quest ends look fun too, can't wait to see which ones he goes with.

So, Forgotten, with the end of the quest near I've grown more and more curious: What exactly did you mean to convey with the word "Kriegstrom"? That is to say: I assume you meant to say something in german/something inspired by german, but I'm curious what exactly it's meant to be.
>>
>>2318583
He's a big Tesla fanboy
>>
>>2318583
I think he was going for "Kriegsturm", 'war storm', but then posted Kriegstrom and had to roll with it.
>>
>>2318864
That's what I assumed, too, but I figured I'd ask while he's still running.
>>
Don’t think OP enjoys his own quest anymore.
>>
>>2318961
too many good rolls
>>
>>2318961

He was never the same after Count Vermillo
>>
>>2320185
He not been the same after a lot of things, every life taken outside of combat has taken a piece of Princes Evershaky humanity

>The Orphans
>Lord Vermillo
>The Emperor murdered any hope of a none grey good end for the war
>Snake however you justify it was company, family
>White Bitch and the son crossed a line for most people and gods
>Kid was perhaps the one losing Prince humanity together and this point and what I consider to be the breaking point
>Poor Jenny has simply been the icing on the cake

Was talking about OP aka Forgotten.

Mind-fucking Asgorga is what got this out of control for him. Even with miracle rolls we would have been ass fucked by men in skirts long ago in the siege.

I hope he continues it till the end. I love this quest. I also love the dice system of this quest, any other quest with the same dice system? This should be the standard, IMO.

I must offer my apologies for my neglect these last few days. Rough times, but in a purely first-world-problem wage slave kind of way.

I will provide a proper update tomorrow and hopefully polish off this thread. I have to admit the Highlander's I took steps to talk up have proven to be a underwhelming threat. I guess that the price Prince paid may well have been worth it.
>>
>>2321575
If this Quest has taught us anything, is that Prince's true enemy aren't fierce warriors, horrific abominations or even Gods - but women.
>>
>>2321575
Prince is a hero killer of the worst kind, the stuff of nightmares the only hero that has survived him is Saint and more of an Anti-hero than prince could ever be
>>
>>2321575
Forgotten, we got two 1´s. A literally one in 10000 chance. Not really your fault.
>>
>>2321575
Don't worry about that, we all know how awful things would've been if we had rolled anything short of superb
>>
>>2321705
>>2321701

Yeah, it's not his fault, but it can still be disheartening. Can't blame the man for feeling a bit let down due to the dice.

Maybe throw in an intentionally bullshit 'bonus boss' for the last fight- something that just 'nopes' any roll naturally lower than 10?
>>
>>2321575
Please make tougher bosses for next time. Thanks
>>
>>2321756
Heh, maybe not. Quest isn't over yet, there are still so many ways things could go wrong - the Archmage and Chevalisse Grandmaster taking us to town, Syka turning on us for crazy reasons, the Necromancer bullshitting his way through the Sanctuary clause, a nat 100...
>>
>>2321942
I don't know man that sounds like problems the old prince would worry about, black prince is on a whole new level of dark power
>>
>>2322246
I don't know, I wouldn't discount them right out of hand.

For example, Forgotten mentioned that Tier 4 Upgrades could have taken out the Necromancer before he nommed the Heir. After that, a fight between him and Prince would be much closer - which I guess means Prince could still win, but most likely it will be tougher than O'Brien.
>>
>>2322278
At least, it would be until we roll TRIPLE NAT 1
>>
Dark Prince should murder the necromancer. That cunt is the reason for every bad thing that has happened since the beginning of the quest, the reason he lost his humanity and the reason bed powerful enough to try

I wish we'd find a way to get the other half of his name, but the quest is in the final stretch. Something like that is an adventure in itself and it would be cheap if it just fell into our lap.
>>
>>2322385

If the alchemist bro is still alive, harvest his soul and imbue it into the black company banner.
>>
>>2322278
I'm pretty sure he said we'd be a match for the necromancer before his power up, but now we're no thing to him.
>>
>>2322627
This is what he said:
>5) Tier 4 choices can crush the Necromancer
>False. Before you handed over the last of Skarling Kingbreaker's bloodline? Sure. You could probably even take the Wild King to town. If anons are still set on taking on the Necromancer, or trying to guard against him breaking his word, it's going to be a lot closer now after his power boost.
>>
>>2322637
Oh. Seems like feeding him the child one such a hot idea afterall. What a shame. At least we had the chance to feel edgy for a while.
>>
>>2322697
Time to fix up our mistake then.
>>
>>2322697
Well we got to become less crippled
>>
It put him on an even footing /with us/, not the other way around.

Maybe having half his name will have some effect, maybe not, but we still have a good chance at winning. 50/50 aren't the worst odds we've faced.
>>
>>2322807
Nah half a true name is nothing.
>>
>>2322637
>>2322807
Are you talking about Prince one vs one against the Necromancer or the entire Company against the Necromancer?
>>

>>

>>
>>2323030
Either way the company gets fucked and throws everything that happend in kresden, kids death, all those who died under the company banner, Princes forefitting of his soul.

All that gets thrown out the window for half a chance to fight someone who will likely kill us and burn everything we care about for it.

It is clunky as all hell though. AKISTV (KSV?) will have likely have one in-depth vote at the start of combat and then more roles until the conclusion. Much faster than this vote-roll-vote-roll system.

>>2321756
Hahaha, the Highlanders were supposed to be that bullshit end of the day casualty-fiesta. I have to admit, ya'll geared your Kriegstrom to success and rolled well when it counted.

>>
>Prince inflicted 13 Damage!
>Hamish O'Connor has his throat ripped out! [0/15 HP][+5 HBFM]
>William McNeil
>Call of the Night halted! [Not dispelled]
>Battle Brother Gained [Olly Hasselholf]
>The Highlander's have died to the Last Man!

A person even remotely familiar with mercenaries might be forgiven for assuming that they are all yellow-bellied jackals that are more interested in coin and groin than blood and steel. For the most part it is true, even in the Kreigstorm. Give any of your men the choice between a fek or a fight and they will choose the former more often than not. Maybe. This is true for almost all mercenaries.
But not the Black Company. Not the 7th Kreigstrom. Every one of the 7th has practiced for this, drilled their coordinated strikes and manoeuvres until they hated the officers that led them. That made them the Best. They match the savagery of the Highlanders, going toe to toe with warriors long renowned to be the fiercest in the continent. Perhaps the world.

The combat between one Highlander and the Skalds LCPL Lerrek Jurgensen, Hans Rusti and Utred Horst is particularly barbaric. More like hounds in a dogfight, literally snapping and clawing and tearing at each other. Even if Pelt were present and unwounded he could hardly add to the ferociousness.

The Kreigstrom are every bit as fierce as them, and they bring the brutal efficiency like a Neumunster cohort to the fight as well. The Highlander’s never stand a chance. In the end it takes all three of the new Skald recruits to get a leg (and an arm) under their musclebound opponent and drag him to the floor to slip some cold steel into the clansman enough to stop the squirming. All across the field the scene is repeated. Kriegstrom leading the way with their ruthlessness and brutal efficiency to victory.

Soon there isn’t a single Highlander left standing aside from your own opponents, and the Free Alliance reinforcements need no further encouragement to flee. Few make it out alive. Those who survive the blades of your men and the arrows of the Rangers are hunted with glee by Lord Lorgia and the newly arrived Vampires.

Your men solidify themselves in legend this day. Not just in the revered Annals, but in the history books and throats of bards for centuries to come throughout the continent. Their names would be recorded in the Annals of course, but their deeds would be known to all in the Northern Realms.

>William McNiell has his side pierced! [15/20HP]

You yourself have always had an affinity for preying on the weak in the heat of battle. You deflect another blow from the gigantic O’Brien and thrust at him, blade spitting out at his lower stomach. He steps back and blocks with his, but it was a feint. You have your eyes on his wounded comrade.

The one-armed painted man finds you an impossible opponent with his wound. Your blade swats his aside and your clawed gauntlet snatches out to clutch his throat. Your intention is not to choke him though. Your talons pierce into either side of his oesophagus and you rip it out with a sickening wet, slopping sound. The mostly-naked highlander sinks to his knees with a shocked expression, his chest swiftly turning from blue to red.

The only blue thing left of the battlefield is the Captain’s hair, though it is mostly ash-coated and her matted with gore. Most of it not hers. The Captain has been fighting hard, and the bandage to her side is wet with blood. She must have re-opened this morning’s wound in her efforts. But as more and more of your men arrive it becomes harder to focus on her as an opponent. One of the few remaining Highlander’s, a cunning looking older man that his comrades call ‘Will’ or ‘Bill’ makes a last ditch effort to kill the important sounding blue-haired bitch. His desperate swing is halted by Trooper Olly Hasselholf, who throws himself at the warrior and attempts to grab his sword arm. Olly Hasselholf has survived being chewed upon by Grenn wolfmen, being stabbed by Neumunster Halberdiers and carved apart by Heigelen Moonlight Blades. He now survives several heavy, teeth-shattering punches to the face from an enraged clansman trying to free his sword arm. It rather resembles a terrier hanging on for dear life after biting the tiger’s tail.

Olly also survives the opportunistic jab of his heartless Captain, piercing the Highlander in the side twice with her blade. The Highlander grunts as if stung by a particularly large wasp, stumbling back.

”ARIGHT!” The Highlander leader looks around as he catches his wounded comrade and steadies him He is surrounded by the fallen green and blue of his clan and the standing Black of the Company. He looks at you with mad hate, hunger and something almost approaching admiration. ”Heheheh. Ooohhh, ye don’t fekkin fight fair do ye? Got some brains in that metal pan o’ yours after all. Ye lads are bonny fightas, I’ll gi’ ye that. But yew? Dancing aboot and waiting for them to finish me and mine off? Smart, aye. But cowardly. Ye yella-bellied shitestain.”

”I’d gi’ anything for a propa go at ye, just yew and me. I’d even…” The Highlander glances down at his runic sword, clearly formed from the strongest magic, and his smile takes a much less mad and much more calculating look for a moment. ”Yew knooo… this ‘ere blade is made o’ some powaful magik. Cast by the Lady herself, Uhaine Nghean. If ah die it just goes *poof* right back to ‘er worshipfulness. But if I plant here in this stone, just so… Well any man that beats me can pluck it out just so. Even if her Worshipfullness don’t like et.”

Ye have to fight me for et, knuckle to knuckle. No armour an no magik buggery. That’s what locks in the blade, aye? And two, ye let ol’ William here go and sing my song for me, aye?”

”What?! Fek right off ye bastard.” The Highlander’s last remaining comrade, a fierce older fellow with a trimmed greying beard and chequered cap appears absolutely furious at the suggestion. ”Ahm no leavin’ ye and those in the mud to crawl back to home, tail tucked. Fek. That. I die with yew and the rest, here and now.”

Fiach Folah, Will.” The big Highlander’s eyes narrow at his fellow clansman. ”You owe me. And tell the Lady that, if I’m to die here, I’ll have a Blood Price from my boy Kenny. 100 Black Company heads should do. Or just this bastards skull right here. ”

”…That’s a hefty Blood Price to lay on one so young.”

”Oh ah dinnae think so. He’s o’ mah blood, nay?”

”Yer blood is about to be spread all o’er the bloody town, so I reckon.”

”Fekkin ‘ell, Will. I might still win, ye know.” The mad clansman glances at your forces, the entirety of the 7th Kreigstrom busy finishing off the wounded highlanders and Free Alliance reinforcements. From the insane smile across his face, he still hasn’t ruled winning out. Be it you or your whole force. He actually thinks he could do it given a little luck.

”Damn your eyes…I’ll do et then. I’ll tell the Lady what ‘appened. Aye. But I’m no sending yon lad to a fools fate. His comrade mutters unhappily. ”She can speak ‘er own mind on what yer blood price might be.”

”Do as ye please, Will.” Lachlan O’Brien shrugs his mighty shoulders and turns his attention back to you. He flashes you his mad smile, and for a disconcerting moment you are reminded of Bad Hand. But even your friend wouldn’t be so unhinged and optimistic. Would he? ”So, ye raggedy scarecrow-lover. What’ll it be?”

”Dios mios, signore.” The Sabari musketeer to your side rolls her eyes, the feather in her ridiculously large cap waving about. Behind her is ‘Whisper’ Smythe and several of his rangers, crossbows drawn. ”Capitano, Lieutenant. Just say the word and we fill this hairy man with many holes. Stop his talking.”

”Ah, this was a good reminder of the old days. The battle is won, Lieutenant Prince. Do as you please.” You turn to regard the Captain, who is already cleaning her sword with a bloody cloth and turning away. She pauses for a moment and looks at the Highlander’s weapon. ”It does suit you though.”

The Highlander is still standing there, surrounded by your men, seemingly without a care in the world. He’s smiling at you, as if he has you cornered and not the other way around. The man is quite clearly a loon.
Maybe you could have them both gunned down here and claim the sword to boot. The Highlander might have been bluffing in saying it would disappear. And, in killing this Will fellow, you can avoid the hassle of some vengeful son jumping onto your blade in the future like in the stories. But it is a very nice sword. And you would like to properly flex your Below-fuelled muscles. Besides, the Vampires are arriving, it may be worth the risk to show them what you can do.

This is not a good match up. We are specced more as a leader.

Prince:
Clever II: +10
Elite II: +10
Courageous I: +5
Experience (I or II?): +5 or + 10

We lose our well-equipped III and SoS. We might be able to get away with our cloak since its no armour and every hero needs a cape to blow in the wind. (Maybe +5).

This gives us Princes DC of between 30-40 depending on how Forgotten rules.

Adding on Left-lane Mutt stance, we end up with 40-50.

O'Brien:
Courage III: +15
Strength III: +15
Experience II: +10

His base DC is already 40 since he never had armour to begin with. Furthermore whats dangerous are his abilities:
1) any time he hits us, he hits at 1.5x damage
2) any time he hits us, we lose 5DC which can stack.
3) If we ever whiff an attack, for <5 dmg, he gains an additional 10DC.

Basically we're going against someone who is specced specifically for these types of encounters and the moment our dice rolls against us the first time, it just starts going downhill since we dont have other methods for manipulating the DC short of magic which would be banned in this fight.

Just shoot the bastards and be done with it. Deny him his song. That will be the greatest injury to his pride.

”I grow tired of this man-ape. Fire away, Spicario.” [+1 Black Heart, Destruction(?)]

Giving him the fight he wants would be his victory, no matter the outcome. The way to truly defeat him is to kill him like the dog he is.

Also; are the 'destruction' and 'dominion' black heart modifiers backwards? Makes more sense to me that way.
>>
>>2325107

Does his blood for mine count as magic?, cause if not Prince is walking with 50+ HP against O'Brien.

We would be a walking murder machine with that sword, the pistol, and the sword of dominion.

>>2325166

But I think the Strength of Giants, Blessing of the Green girl, and Magic Runes are all tied to the sword.
>>
>>2325201
I think taking him head on yourself is a dominant action. Having your rangers pump him full of arrows would be a destructive action right since it can be overkill depending on their eagerness.
>>
>>2325206

As an addendum,

Can we take him into our service? We take his sword and have him as a subordinate. God knows the Black Company is gonna need damn fine officers and he seems like a damn fine officer.

It says dominion not domination. Dominion is more about ruling and ordering while destruction is obvious enough. We're essentially weighing the black and prince parts of 'Black Prince' against each other.
I also can't see a reality in which our archers (however many) could be considered more destructive than we are. We literally just ripped a mans esophagus out of his throat!

Compare with the previous choice:
>>2297013
Destruction appears to be bloodthirst and glory while dominion is leadership and authority.

I would have dueled anyone else, but this dick is designed to be our hard counter and I don't want to take such a risk this late. I'm mighty curious what Prince looks like underneath the armour at this point... But let's give Kiranova the first peek in private. She's earned that. On that note, it's impressive that she either hasn't freaked out about it or is that good at hiding it

I believe dominion to be better than destruction but damn, no one else die today.

>>2326331
Prince has agreed to one-on-one duels before, as seen in the Skaldening back in thread #24. But that was to avoid a bloodbath where he might lose some of his lads.

I believe it is perfectly in character for Prince to see no point in doing so when he holds all the advantage. It would also be perfectly in character to a duel due to Prince's arrogance in his new form, or from a desire for shiny things. Double Pay has gotten him in trouble before.

2 = O'Brien dies in a hail of musketballs and crossbow bolts. The sword vanishes.
3 = O'Brien is gunned down like a dog. The sword remains, right there for the taking.

These should be the skills available:
>Tier 3: Get Back in the Fight! (ORDER Ability: Add +1d3 Discipline. May not exceed starting discipline.)
>Tier 3: Death Song (PASSIVE Ability: If your men’s discipline is reduce to 0 they do not Lose Cohesion. Instead they suffer an additional +1d6 Casualties per round, suffering -5DC per casualty taken so far.)
>Tier 3: Fear Me (ORDER Ability: Automatically deduct 1d3 Discipline from the enemy force. The effect is doubled if you kill your opponent on the round it was issued.)
>>
okay so we not only gun O'Brien down like a dog but we also get his shiny sword full of MAGIC RUNES, its been an amazing day for Kriegstrom all things considered two eagles and a band of highlanders fek me.

now If we could just butcher the camp and kill O'Briens child we can call it a day

Eat shit highlanders.

Frankly this would still be concerning to other onlookers.

Because this shows that even with all the cards on his side, Prince isn't gonna let pride get to his head and still carve up his opponent.
>>
>>2327274
Forgotten, what about william. Does he eat a face full of lead too?
>>
>>2327397

Nah man, Raider Legendary has a kid too.

Highlander Kid and Raider Runt got to team up and in a decade or so, along with a verdun kid got to go full on power rangers to try and kill us.

Only they fail, badly.

Hey OP,

I never post in black company threads as i.never seem to be on time, maybw xue to time.zones.

Still, ive been reading.your threads regularly since assault on Emperor's castle and burning orphanage (that part with Saint and Legless Jenny was a masterpiece, i kekd hard).

Anyway, in the name of.other anons who just read, thank you for a great thread, stories and.your awesome writing. Think about writing.a book, you really.have a talent in that fantasy setting.thing ( maybe other as well, no idea).

I love black company saga and your quest was a great homage to books. Nice ideas and characters as well, i really enjoyed it. Kind of sad its about.to.end but i can that there's little further options for Prince to grow as a.character.

Once again, thank you for your time.

It's a Highlander Claymore, it is easily a 7 foot something chunk of steel. I mean... that doesn't mean you can't shave with it...

>>2327449
He does. Ol' Will would only have survived in the case of a total failure.

>>2327397
You are obsessed with hunting down this Highlander kid, aren't you? Isn't Prince's track record bad enough? Fine, it'll be an option when the time comes.

>>2327789
>>2327769
Nice try, you fekker. I don't even know what that Crit would have meant.
>Geez, Prince, why does the Captain let you loot TWO swords?

>>2329823
Wow. Thanks. I mean that sincerely, it's great to great such a positive response. The occasional 'good quest, OP' makes me all warm and fuzzy but this is next level.

I don't think I remained faithful to the books by any means, but I'm glad you have enjoyed the ride. It's good to hear the Saint/Orphans episode was as fun to read as it was to write. I hope you join us for our next adventure, either in this setting or another.

Genuinely appreciate it, my dude.

>You are obsessed with hunting down this Highlander kid, aren't you? Isn't Prince's track record bad enough? Fine, it'll be an option when the time comes.

O'Brien made a clear case for his kid being trouble for the company down the line and that puts OUR family at risk so what's one more dead kid against the safety of our company OUR kriegstrom?

Christ if Kid or Jenny was alive this would be a completely different ballgame rpwise
>>
>>2329863
out of curiosity is there any offer the company could make currently that would get Asorgia to continue with the company or even sign on as an officer/blackguard?

please say yes!
>>
>>2329863
I continue to love this quest.

Gotten up to Kid's demise.

I'm sad.
>>
>>2329906
He would have to do it of free will. We can't force it upon the dragon as that is part of the oath you take upon joining the company (although it doesn't seem like kid had much choice)
>>
>>2329906
Gold and bitches
>>
>>2329863
Your writing is gold, dude. This quest has a solid place in the hall of fame, without a doubt.

A lot of quests, many of the great ones included, don't really stand on their own as the player interaction, the shared joy and pain, the arguments and hissy fits are too integral to the experience. We have a lot of fun and tears together here but the way you work all of that into your writing lets the story stand on its own feet. If you compiled the story posts into a pdf you'd have a good novel on your hands.
>>
>>2330365
I was thinking about puting all the story posts into a word doc and posting it

Funny that
