You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Finally, the skyline of Eisenwand could be seen over the horizon, an occurrence that was much more common considering the forest that would normally block such a view was gone. Well, not like you were upset about it or anything.

"So tragic to see so many trees burned down..." Janice frowns as her boots crunch on the dried ash.

Artya nods in agreement.

"Don't worry, it'll grow back eventually." Nino assures them.

"Yeah, at the very least Ozen didn't salt the ground." Naru rolls her eyes.

"Erm, are those things REALLY necessary?" Niko frowns as she points to the item clenched in your hand.

It was a loop of wire that had the ears of all the elves your party had slain collected on it. A common practice among Templars as proof of their deeds. Not much different from the two Ogre heads you were also carrying.

"And... that doesn't bother you?" Morgan raises an eyebrow.

You just simply shrug. This was perfectly normal.

"Honestly I shouldn't be surprised." Morgan sighs.

"There's nothing wrong with keeping a few bits for a snack later!" Janice nods, completely misunderstanding the reasoning for your actions.

"Th-that's not what it's about..." Morgan groans.

Artya then dashes up and taps at your arm before pointing towards the Monastery, wondering if that was your destination. You nod in confirmation.

The masked foxgirl then dashes back to Janice and starts tugging at her sleeve and pointing to the Monastery.

"Yes, yes, I see it!" Janice laughs. "Quite the foreboding place, isn't it?"

"Well, they have to make sure people can't just walk inside whenever they want!" Nino explains.

"It's much nicer inside than you would think." Niko adds.

You motion for them to be quiet. Up in the gatehouse, you could see there was already a welcoming party for you. You squint to see just who exactly is meeting you. It was...

Suddenly, but not surprisingly, Ozen leaps down from the gatehouse, her massive legs easily able to absorb the shock of the landing as a small cloud of ash and dust is flung up in the air.

"Ah, I see you've brought company, Templar." Ozen smiles as she glances at Janice and Artya. "Rather interesting company."

"I'm Janice! Nice to meet you!" Janice grins as she hold her hand out for a shake.

Ozen pauses, as if contemplating whether or not to actually reciprocate the gesture, but ultimately goes through with it, her massive hand clasping Janice's.

And there's a brief pause as the two grip each other's hands, smiling at each other rather worryingly. You were getting the impression that they were trying to size each other up, strengthwise.

Artya seems to visibly fret over this, while Nino just pats her on the shoulder.

"Should we...?" Morgan mumbles to you.

You shake your head. This did not seem the type of encounter to interrupt. Finally, they both let go and Ozen takes a step back.

"Ah, I see that some of those ears were collected by you, then." Ozen nods and turns to you. "Have they proven themselves adequately?"

You nod.

"Then welcome!" Ozen smiles and spreads her arms wide. "I simply fascinated to know more about these strangers from the wilds!"

"Excellent!" Janice smiles. "It's been a long journey to get here!"

"Of course, though I'm afraid there's one more test for you two..." Ozen's smile turns to a dark grin as she signals for the gate to be opened.

"Um, I think..." Nino taps your arm, already suspecting what will happen next.

Even if we get complete Templar and the Kingdom's backing, there are still a few problems with getting those demis into the Kingdom.

First is trying to transport them all out there. We msy have to requisition a caravan, ship, or a teleport mage.
Then there's the issue of where we're going to house them. I doubt any race in the city will let a new race stay within their walls after the awe and wonder fades.

Humans may be the closest thing they've got to racial similarities, but it might take some time for everyone to get used to the new neighbour's "peculiarities", and we certainly can't leave them to build outside the walls since there's a war happening soon.
>>
>>2300319
Why do we need to move them in? If we just get some trade going they can stay where they are. It's not like they'll want to leave that much.

Suddenly, like a wave of locusts, Ozen's acolytes come piling out of the gate, a crazed glint in their eyes.

"They look so FLUFFY!" You can hear them squeal.

Janice's eyes glint as well, and she dashes forward.

"Ohmygosh they're all so ADORABLE!" Janice squeals as she lunges forward and snatches up several acolytes in a big motherly bear hug.

"Retreeeeaaaat!" The acolytes yell as they rout, not expecting Janice to take the offensive like that.

"Hey wait! I'm not done yet!" Janice cries. "I need to hug every single one of yoooouuuu!"

Janice then bounds into the open Monastery.

Artya just shakes her head in exasperation.

"...I must admit, I'm starting to rather like her." Ozen nods with with approval and her eyes slide over to Morgan, who has opted not to disguise her true appearance now. "I suppose in light of this, I shouldn't be surprised."

"Is it going to be a problem?" Morgan continues staring down Ozen.

"Oh, not at all. You're a perfectly good Elf-killer, so I have no reason to pursue you." Ozen laughs, though her eyes go cold for a brief moment. "Just make sure to keep it that way."

"Understood." Morgan nods, still wary of Ozen.

"Well, whatever, I'm gonna go take a bath and get some sleep." Naru grumbles as she grabs Nino by the collar and drags her along. "Same goes for you, Squirt."

"Nooooo, but I wanna watch Janice beat them up..." Nino whines.

"You should come along too, kid." Naru nods to Artya, who nods and follows since she had nothing else to do.

"Guess I gotta go get some rest too or Naru will kill me." Niko sighs, cradling her freshly healed arm.

Building a new wall around where they start setting up at wouldn't be too hard with the levels of magic here. At bare minimum a decent earth-work wall reinforced with a palisade wouldn't be a problem.
Though simply having them join another village father out, or to have them start up a new village on this side of the mountains would also be an option.

I have trouble thinking it would be easy to get weirwood and then just make equipment out of it and benefit from full effect, but yeah, if we could do it might as well have some weirwood installed under our armor or something. I'd support testing out what animal everyone is though in any case.

You cross your arms and stare at Ozen, wondering where Havel was since he was typically the gatekeeper to the Monastery.

"Ah, Havel?" Ozen nods. "Well, he's gone off to an emergency meeting with the King and Queen."

"For what?" Morgan blinks.

"While you were gone, Semiramis and her retinue disappeared overnight." Ozen shrugs. "And they took quite a number of the Elven Quarter population with them as well. Willingly or voluntarily, we don't know yet, but I don't particularly care."

"What? They're all just gone?" Morgan blinks.

"Just like that!" Ozen grins. "If only they would do that more often. In any case, the city leadership is trying to figure out what should be done with the remaining elves, if anything at all."

"That's horrible." Mogan gasps.

"Quite." Ozen sighs. "Semiramis should have just taken all of them. Would make dealing with them oh so much easier."

If we get to where it is, it's as easy as cutting down a tree and dragging it to someone.
We give the hardwood core to be made into a staff for Nino. A 1.5-inch diameter and 5-6 feet tall would be terrific.

>>2300398
This could be a thing. I will blame the elves for everything until evidence to the contrary is presented.
>>
>>2300403
Most plausible reasons seem to be someone is either draining them after it's in the tree or it gets drained out before it's in the tree. I kind of wonder why the weirwoods appear to congregate in a particular area, so I'd wonder if they grow on top of some magic leyline or so forth.Someone interrupting it seems like the most plausible reason to me.

I was thinking along the lines of crushing dried leaves, grinding roots, or even extracting sap/oil from the tree for the potion. Might not be as powerful or permanent as the real wood, though.

You put a hand on Morgan's shoulder. This was something you should trust Havel to handle.

"Right." Morgan nods. "So what do we do now?"

"Well, normally one would wait until Havel returns with instructions." Ozen grins. "Or well, that's would Havel would do."

"And you?" Morgan raises an eyebrow.

"Well, the Elven Quarter was sealed off the moment it was found Semiramis left." Ozen grunts. "Nobody has gone in our out since besides a few supply caravans."

"So, you want somebody to go inside to investigate..." Morgan narrows her eyes.

"Well, if someone could do that, they might find clues, or could interview the remaining populace for intelligence." Ozen shrugs. "It who knows what may be lost the longer we wait?"

"Excellent, and it's just starting to get dark, as well." Ozen nods, looking up to the darkening skies. "I trust that you two will find a way of entering the Elven Quarter."

"We'll figure something out." Morgan mutters.

"Well, do be sure to come back before Havel, or he'll start asking me a lot of inconvenient questions!" Ozen chuckles as she waves and turns to go back into the Monastery.

Well... first things first. You should probably make sure Janice hadn't killed all of Ozen's acolytes with kindness. You and Morgan head into the Monastery, where you immediately see Janice's first victims, strewn along the floors completely out of it.

"So warm and fluffy..." One of the fallen acolytes giggles, her eyes completely glazed over.

"Wow, that's pretty serious." Morgan frowns. "I guess we should put a leash on Janice?"

You give Morgan a hard look.

Unfortunately for you and Morgan, Janice is the one to strike first, bounding around a corner and tackling the both of you and a tight hug.

"Oh! You didn't tell me you had so many little pups here, too!" Janice squeals happily, her ears twitching wildly as she does so. "They're all just so precious!"

"Air..." Morgan wheezes, but Janice is too caught up to hear her.

Thankfully, your armor protects you from being constricted, but not from the heat her body was emanating, as well as her thick, strong canine scent, which simply oozed through your helmet.

"Still, it seems a few of them have holed themselves up in a storeroom or something." Janice pouts. "I don't really want to break the door in or anything. Do you mind helping me out?"

You nod. If it would get her off of you and Morgan, then you would help her.

"Thank you!" Janice smiles as she unlatches her hug and helps you and Morgan back up to your feet. Her ears were still twitching like an eager pet. "Well? Well?"

You point to one of the doors in the hall. It led to a small side passage that should allow her to slip into the storerooms. You were confident that Havel hadn't told Ozen or the acolytes about it.

"Thank you!" Janice's eyes sparkle ass he kisses your helmet on the "cheek" before dashing off for the door.

You then see Morgan glowering at you jealously and you just shrug helplessly.

"We'll talk about that later." Morgan growls. "Anyways, we should get going."

You nod.

The two of you exit the Monastery and make your way to a small stone monument the field. Thankfully, it was dark enough that nobody on the city walls would be able to spot you. You had learned that his was one of the access points into the city tunnels, sealed and kept secret to prevent intrusion.

Fortunately for you, Nino had been able to craft a charm after observing Lucina's sealing spell, which was supposed to be able to unlock the tunnels for your use. Nino hadn't exactly told Lucina she had done such a thing, but the less she knew the better for now.

You wave the charm in front of the entrance, and the stone door slides open, revealing the tunnels below. You and Morgan jump in.

"So... how far do we go in?" Morgan wonders as she examines the tunnel walls.

You follow the winding tunnels, Nino's enchanted bracelet proving invaluable in guiding the path for you until you arrive upon an exit which you're fairly sure is within the residential area of the Elven Quarter. You raise the charm up to the exit and the stone slides open, allowing you and Morgan to clamber out.

"Watch out, Elves tend to be nocturnal." Morgan reminds you as her eyes dart side to side and her ears twitch. "Try not to make too much noise."

You nod.

"So, we can try combing the abandoned houses to find any clues." Morgan suggests, pointing to the darkened windows. And then looks at the few lit ones. "Or we can start asking the Elves who stayed behind..."

You head over to one of the abandoned houses. Not dealing with people was a much better bet. It was something you personally preferred, honestly.

"All right, you search and I'll keep a lookout." Morgan nods as she takes position outside the door.

You grab the wood handle, a bit surprised that it was not locked, but you continue inside anyways.

You enter the abandoned elf abode, but find the interior almost completely cleaned out. Not ransacked or hurriedly packed. No, whoever left did so in a controlled and orderly fashion. Nothing seemed out of place, other than the fact that almost everything of value had been removed.

"We have incoming!" Morgan hisses.

You dash up the window where Morgan was looking out of, and she points down the street. Sure enough, you see an Elf warrior, the one you met at the party, dashing up the street with a couple other Elves. However, they looked less like soldiers and more like random Elf citizens who had picked up some makeshift armor and weapons. Some kind of local militia to keep order?

"What do we do?" Morgan hisses.

Unfortunately, it appears that the Elves knew exactly where you were, as they begin to take positions around the house, the pale light of their moonlight torches glowing through the windows.

"Come out!" You hear the Elf warrior shout. "We know you're hiding in there, thieves! Step out surrender!"

"This is REALLY not good." Morgan groans. "What do we do?"

You look to Morgan and slowly get up, walking out the door. You were going to try and be diplomatic about this.

"The Ashwalker!" The Elf warrior hisses as her fellow Elves raise their bows, aiming straight at you. "Not just happy with burning the forest? Come to finish the job?"

You try to remain calm and try to communicate this the Elves, but they remain tense.

"You're trespassing into the Elven Quarter." The Elf warrior scowls. "You will be taken into custody until this is all sorted out."

Well, it didn't look like they wanted to kill you, but they weren't about to let you go, either.

You look up a bit to see that Morgan had taken the opportunity to slip out of the house and clamber up tot he rooftops, keeping a watchful eye over you all.

You nod and step forward as Morgan slips away to do her own little investigation. Hopefully you'll provide enough of a distraction for her to find something.

"You will need to be relieved of your armor and weapons." The Elf warrior continues, still serious. "We can't very well have an armed Templar roaming around the Elven Quarter."

Out of the corners of your vision, you could see a couple of Elven militia men cautiously step toward you.

You pausing. Asking to take a Templar's armor and weapons was an insult to their honor. Of course an Elf wouldn't understand that.

Or maybe she did and was just ordering that to rub it into your face.

Either way, this wasn't a demand that you would bow down to. You glare at the Elves, warning them to back off.

You belt out an intimidating glare, causing the Elves to stop cold in their tracks. You were the Ashwalker, after all, and these weren't even proper Elven warriors. Just simple civilians being pressed into a roughshod militia.

"So you want to do the this the hard way, I suppose." The Elven warrior sighs as she aims her bow.

You hear the whistle of an arrow, but it wasn't headed towards you. The arrow buries itself in the stone at the Elven warrior's feet, causing her to hesitate in surprise. More arrows rain down, piercing the moonlight orbs the Elves typically used for illumination, plunging the street into darkness.

"Come on!" Morgan hisses in your ear as she dashes past. "This distraction won't last long!"

The two of you make the run back to the tunnel entrance, diving in and quickly closing it back up. They won't be able to follow you here.

"Jeez, what a mess that turned out to be." Morgan groans. "We barely got out of there."

You tap her on the shoulder. Had she recovered anything?

"Just a few papers in Elven cipher." Morgan holds a bag up to you. "Can't read it, but I'm sure we can get someone who can."

You nod. It was a start.

The two of you head back to where you came, carefully exiting the tunnels and closing up the entrance before returning to the Monastery. By now it was almost completely pitch black, but at the gate you way is blocked by the last person you wanted to see right now.

"And where have you two been?" Havel rumbles, his arms crossed sternly.

You expect Havel's strike as he brings his fist crashing down on the top of your head. Thankfully, you both know your armor can absorb the impact, but that doesn't stop your ears from ringing due to the impossibly loud CLANG.

"I should've expected you two to do something incredibly reckless." Havel says with exasperation. "And with Ozen's encouragement no doubt."

"But Havel, we-" Morgan shows him the bag of documents she recovered but he quickly cuts her off.

"We shall speak of this later after you get some rest." Havel grunts, still annoyed. "And I advise you not to leave the Monastery grounds this time."

"...yes sir." Morgan nods obediently.

You nod as well.

Even though your scouting mission was fairly successful, you simply dread the further punishments Havel might have for you later on...
