You are Ushi Walker, the half-japanese/half-american wielder of the mighty quirk “Everything is Bigger in Texas", U.A High first year student, Class 1-A newly sentenced janitress and currently standing in front of your mother's house after a tiring day.

Not "falling unconscious" kind of tiring, not today at least. But after a… rattling villain ambush a few days ago, today's attack simulacrum/pop-quiz was rather draining on your mind.

All Might in a mask made for an imposing villain, but Class 1-A held its ground again and passed. And even if the delivery was cruel, you learned your lesson.

Teamwork and a quick assessment of the situation can even the odds against opponents whole weight categories over your own… And a hero is always in danger. You can't ever lower your guard.

Then you had to undo your quirk's effects on a criminal whose everything you'd rather forget…

But that would be dumb. Even if you disliked the way it went, you learned something valuable.

Not every criminal is a lost soul, and if you understood Mr. Aizawa correctly, most villains are Evil. Capital "E", not the kind of people that you can talk down, but the kind that will make you bleed for trying to.

Or in your case, cleaning. A whole lot of cleaning for the next two weeks.
Next time your teacher tells you to step back, you'll listen.
Maybe even do it.

But for now, you just want to unwind and rest.

You have three years of learning from the best ahead of you, a festival in a couple weeks, and your own birthday tomorrow.

You'd say you deserve it, but you don't feel like talking alone.
So you fumble with your keys for a couple of seconds before opening the door and staring inside.

Unlike most days since you moved to Japan, the house doesn't smell of green tea, nor you have to look for your mother, as she's standing in the middle of the living room, staring right back at you.

She looks at you and clasps her hands, softly kicking something behind her with her hoof and sliding it under the sofa, out of your field of view.

>"Heya, Hun!.. I thought you'd spend longer in town!" She says, looking a tad nervous.
You got back two hours later than normal, so thinking you decided to wander around Musutafu made more sense than anything else.

"Howdy." You greet her back, entering the house and walking towards the hallway door. "Sorry for being late, but I didn't really go to town"

>"...Did you walk home?" She asks, trying to make sense of the incomplete information you just told her.

"Yeah... Needed to clear my head after taking care of you know what." You tell her, grumbling the last few words.

It only takes her a second to realize what you meant.

>"Oh, hun… The villain?" She asks you, her nervous expression melting away and being replaced by worry. "Did he try anything?"

"Nope. Not a thing." You answer, waving your arm around. "Everything went perfectly fine. Walked in, tapped him and… Yeah. Stuff."

>"Uh-huh." Momma replies, lowering her ears and looking at you intently. "I get it, you don't want to talk about it. But if any of that… Stuff bothers you, you can always tell me."

It's only been one week and you have already worried her sick at least twice…
You quickly take off your backpack and pull out the blue-ish gray and orange mask, intent on telling her some good, or at least light hearted news.

"We had a surprise villain attack drill today!" You tell her, showing yourself more excited that you really are. "We beat the tar outta All Might! I took his mask!"

>"Uh. How… Kind of him to let you keep it." She comments as you put the mask on. "... He let you keep it, right?"

It's a pretty neat piece of gear, you think. The filters make everything smell like an hospital while the glass make everything yellowish, and it has a tiny switch under the mouthpiece. You instantly flip it, intent on knowing what it does.

"Well… He didn't say I couldn't keep it." You answer, your voice warped and lowered a couple of octaves. "Besides, I'm sure Might Tower can spare a new gasmask if All Might needs to scare the living daylights outta another class."

Momma crosses her arms and looks straight at your eyes.

>"Next time you see him, I want you to offer it back." She tells you, not quite scolding you, but with a clear, if unsaid "Or else" at the end.

"Fine… But I still think I should keep it. To the victor go the spoils and all that." You reply, speaking in the lowest tone you can and crossing your own two arms.

She nods and looks at you oddly for a second before speaking again.

>"And take that thing off, you'll ruin a wall by accident." She says, walking close and tapping the edge of mask's metallic horns with her finger. "...and you sound like my brother. It's uncanny."

Uh... It's been awhile since you've seen him.
But being your birthday tomorrow, you can expect his letter and present.
He always sent at least one letter a year.

"What's up with Uncle Rik anyway? Haven't heard of him in forever." You ask her as you comply, taking off the sharp piece of headwear and flipping the switch back off.

>"Maybe he'll finally quit that damn job of his and come visit soon, now that we are here." Momma says, sounding a tad upset.

She's always like that when speaking about him.
You don't get it.
Maybe it's because of being an only child, or maybe it's because you can't fathom a grudge with your family.

"I hope he does. Family should stick together, not just spread around the globe." You tell your mother, in an admittedly preachy tone.

She stares blank faced at you for a second before smirking.
It's sorta scary.

>"What about Chloe? She's working now, you know. International Licence and all." Momma says, too smug for her age.

Cousin Chloe.
Back when you were a kid… A younger kid, back when all you had was your family, you had little choice but to play with her when your aunt visited.
She was the bane of your existence, being the elder of the two and thus manifesting her quirk first. Children can be cruel.

"She can stay down under. Please, let her stay down under." You half answer, half plead.

>"But you were so cute playing together!" Your mother says, sounding too sincere for your liking.

Still, it's better than seeing her worried.

U.A's Sports Festival draws near.
Your first great chance to show the whole country… No. The world how great you are and what you can do.

But it's still a Sports Festival, and while a life of farm labor and genetics has given you a fairly toned body and you have been training at the Tigers' Den, your daily training routine is little more than stretching before going to bed.

That won't cut it anymore.

You need to be the fastest, strongest, nimblest and most resilient, and that will take some work.

"Did ya know U.A's Sports Festival is in a couple of weeks?" You ask Momma.

>"I knew it was close to the start of the year, but wasn't sure of the specifics." She answers, gazing at the ceiling for a second before her ears perk up. "I'll need to get a ticket now!"

"...You know it's televised, right?" You ask her, unsure about that declaration.

>"hun, I used to watch it on T.V before you existed." She answers, raising an eyebrow. "But I'm not going to stay at home if I can be cheering you on site. Sure, it'll be on the expensive side of things… But it's once a year and we aren't doing badly, we can afford it."

"But you know what that means, right?" You ask her, pulling back your shirt sleeve and placing your hand over your biceps before flexing.

Not bad, but Mina could still beat you easily in arm wrestling.
...Then again, she could beat most of the class.

>"Uh?" Momma says, confused at your actions.

"It means that I'll have to do my best! Starting today, I'll train daily! No breaking regime!" You tell her with genuine excitement.

>"I didn't know you had a regime." She replies, looking as confused as before.

"I don't!" You tell her, slipping past the sliding door to the hallway and dashing up the stairs. "Not yet, rather. Imma go look up one on the web!"

>"Make sure to check if it suits you!" She shouts behind you. "You don't want to pull or break something!"

You enter your room and throw your backpack over the bed, then open your laptop and turn it on.

While it boots up almost instantly, you may have more widgets and apps than needed, causing it to take a couple of minutes before it's actually usable.

It gives you time to check on Tin.
Who is now balancing objects atop each other over your nightstand, even managing to include two sideways american quarters on its work.

...Is it normal? You don't know, but he seems content, it's geometrical head bobbing from side to side as it carefully places a bottlecap over a fork.

When your laptop is finally used, you fire up your prefered browser and start looking up routines. Then you start filtering out those for people more and less fit than you, for people with other kinds of mutations and others that are useless to you.

There's still a lot more than you expected, focusing on all sorts of things.
So you start opening tabs for each one that catches your eye.

There's some that mainly focus on your arms and wrists, seemingly for precision and strength. Useful for ball sports and darts, some say.

Others are for your core, focusing on working your abdominal and lower back muscles. Useful for everything that requires stamina or causes shocks on the body, the sites claim.

Some others are mainly focused on training your legs, building up your quads, hamstrings and glutes.
Those claim an improved sprinting speed, jumping height and distance, balance and…
A rounder, firmer tushie.

Or you could take up a more general one, meant to build everything, but with slower results than any of the specific ones.

Then again, that's not all you'll need.
Your quirk is strong, and you have trained with it since you first manifested it thanks to the laxer American quirk regulations, but you could always be faster, more precise…

There's nothing for that on the internet beyond "Push yourself until it hurts, then some more".

You wonder what to do with your two weeks, spinning in your swivel chair. You'll need time to see results, but U.A seems to push its students hard and fast.

In a corner of the room, is the white, long box you won at the eating contest a few days ago.
Having never opened it, its contents are still a mystery to you.

Maybe you should do something about that, too.

After spinning yourself dizzy, you come to a few conclusions.

First, since you can only use your quirk with your hands, focusing on getting stronger, faster arms would be in a roundabout way, some sort of quirk training too.

Packing more of a punch if you need to sock some sucker and being able to mitigate damage by blocking with your forearms are the main reasons to go with this routine, but you also hope to dominate any sort of monkey bars and throwing related competition.

You don't really know what will the festival demand of you, but you hope you made the right decision by focusing on your arms.

Looking up amongst the web's recommendations, you take half an hour to research what you can do on a daily basis with what little equipment you have, namely two 10 pounds cast iron dumbbells you bought years ago to practice with your quirk.

With your quirk doing what it does, you've never needed heavier ones.

In the end, you scribble a plan on your notepad, rip the page and pin it to the wall with a thumb tack.

It ought to be simple and hard, just the way exercise should be. Probably because of your decision to use only one arm when possible, but it's the only way you will ever get any sweat out of doing push ups and chin ups with your weight.

Once you are sure of what you are doing and confident on your ability to not injure yourself, you change to something more comfortable and try it out.

Dips between your desk and nightstand, leveled with your notebooks.
One armed push ups, placing a pillow below you after the third... bounce started making you worry about bruising.
Alternating dumbbell curls with just enough weight to make your arms shake and feel like burning.
Wrist curls with less weight to get your forearms and wrists in the action.

And chin ups, hanging off your doorframe.
Your low weight won't break it for now, but you should get an actual bar next time you go shopping.

It takes you an hour to do it all the sets you hoped to do, including a few minutes between exercises.

Your arms and upper body feels sore and your tank top soggy, but on the whole, you feel accomplished, not unlike last week at the dojo.
It's that kind of pain that tells you are on the right track.
...And the kind of smell that tells you to always follow your new routine with a shower.
You pick up your jammies, consisting of black spats and the extremely oversized shirt you use in lieu of actual pajamas, and your towel and head off into the bathroom, hanging your stuff on the perches behind the door.

Considering the japanese style bathroom only allows for sitting showers or bathing, you open the hot water and wait for a well deserved bath.

As the tub fills, you look at yourself on the mirror before disrobing.

A few poses and practice salutes for your imminent victory bring a smile to your face.
You like yourself... for the most part.

But you have everything under control.
Besides that time you almost lowed on school, that is.

Almost scalding and really steamy, you enjoy your bath, holding to the tub's borders to stay underwater.

After a relaxing bath, you help out Momma with dinner, both preparing it and making it disappear.

>"Now go hit the hay, you have a big day ahead of you!" Momma urges you, keeping you away from your usual duty of picking up the table.

"Either the world ends, or it won't be nearly as big as the rest of the week." You snark.

>"Be nice hun, it's your first japanese birthday, and probably the first "adult" birthday any of your friends ever tried to plan." Momma explains. "Give them a chance, I'm sure they'll do their best."

"Oh, I don't doubt that whoever "they" are will do great." You tell her, waving her off but complying. "But I wouldn't expect it to blow away this week in sheer tiring… ness."

>"Nighty!" You hear your mother's voice down stairs as you brush your teeth.

You are about to go to bed when you glance upon the mysterious box once more.
With whatever a japanese birthday is, you'd expect your friends to come over at some point, giving you the chance to open it in front of those who saw you win it…

Then again, the guy at the shop said that you should open it in private, so you do that instead.

Opening the box from the top, you find what appears to be a long, white pillow in a plastic bag.
Bodysize, really.

Opening up the bag with your nails, you find out that it's quite the comfy pillow… and that there's a smaller bag at the bottom of the box.

Setting the pillow down on your bed, open the second bag and pull out a folded piece of white cloth, a cover for the pillow.

Unfolding it…
Reveals a proudly posing Crimson Riot and a tiny tag on the corner of the cover.

You can't say you were expecting that, but if the prizes were about Midnight and Crimson Riot, you should have guessed that the Midnight ones were going to be for the boys…

Since the small tag on the cover says "Flip me!" you do so, finding the same hero in a similar pose, but more suggestive… and wearing… less. A lot less.

Red faced, you silently flip it back and stuff it in the bag it came from, before stuffing that back in the box.

You look at your pillow and wonder what the boy's price for this would have been…

A pint of cold tap water later, you are comfortable on your bed with your new pillow, having wished a good night to your mother, robot and plushie.

You dream of home this night.
It's a remarkably unremarkable dream in which nothing bad happens at all.
Nothing particularly good either, just the joys of home, like tending to the few chickens in the coop, feeding grandpa's dogs and feeding the calves without mothers.

Thus is no surprise that you wake up early and full of energy, although a bit itchy.

First order of business in throwing off the covers and jump off the bed, looking for where the hell did you leave your phone last night.

Once you find it, you feel even better, as it's bursting with "Happy Birthday!" texts and cheesy e-cards.
>>
File: Concern.png (173 KB, 585x629)

A couple of them demand your attention, though.

>"Reply when you can and come meet us by Rothar Square. We have some things planned." Says Shoto's text.

>"Hey, Ushi! Happy Birthday, girl! We got a looot planned for today. Mind if I pick you up at noon? How? Turns out we can see our classmates info on the school's app!.. Jiro told me. Anyway, should I swing by?" Denki's text reads.

You'll have to think about that…
They sound kind of opposite, after all.

But your nose tells you to leave that for later.
Knowing your mother, the sweet smells coming from the first floor aren't exactly a surprise anymore, but you'll never rebuke her birthday spread.

It's the kind of enticing smell that leads you by the nose to its source, and by association, your mother.

>"Happy birthday hun! I didn't quite know what to make, so I made a bit of everything." She tells you as she's been doing for years and setting down another flapjack atop an already rather high stack. "How does it feel being sixteen? I think I forgot."

"For over eight birthdays in a row? I think I can see a pattern..." You joke, taking your seat in front of the varied spread of fries meats, breads, flapjacks and soups. "'bout the age… I'll tell you after a test run, because so far, a bit of itchiness is all I notice."

>"Speaking of test runs, you should take one of these." She tells you, placing a pill bottle on next to your juice glass.

You speak two languages easily and can understand a third, but you can't understand the label. It's in pharma-nese.

"Whatever for?" You ask her, taking a pill and rolling it on the palm of your hand.

>"Heat." She answers nonchalantly, despite the clang of your dropped fork. "I marked the day on your calendar and everything."

"<Iwhatnaw?>" You blurt out, setting down the pill on the table and poking it with your knife.

>"Hun, you know how hard it's for docs to get a reading on mutant development. You may not need them like I do, but that episode you almost had on the first day of school makes me think you might. Since they are harmless anyway, I'd like you to at least take them for now, until your next check up." She explains looking at you with her ears down. "I'd really feel safer knowing you did."

"Since when do you keep an eye on my cycle?" You ask her, feeling icky but relieved that this is a private moment, and not something that can leak to the internet.

>"Since you have one." She answers, ruffling your hair. "I told you, my job is pretty much worrying about you. Has been for over 16 years now."

On one hand, there's no way you need those pills, right? On the other, while you have made an art out of hiding your less obvious mutations, there's no reason to risk going around lifting your metaphorical tail if you can help it.

...If that's how it works.
You aren't really sure, and you aren't going to ask if you don't have to.

"Fine..." You tell your mother, making it clear with your tone that you aren't happy about it, but taking the pill with a sip of orange juice. "When's my next check up anyway?"

She taps her chin a few times before answering.

>"You are due for your yearly one… So as soon as I can find a pediatrician who is also competent in both plant based mutations and animal ones ...Believe me hun, it was as hard as it sounds the first time around." She tell you dragging her hand down her ponytail.

>"I'm not looking forwards to looking one up… but I guess it's better to search now than wait until you actually get sick. Or injured. Probably the latter." She continues, pouring herself a cup of tea.

"I've not even caught a cold in years." You boast, smiling smugly for a second before digging in.

She just stares at you for a couple of seconds, sipping her tea.

>"Yet you've broken each limb at least once." She replies, raising an eyebrow. "Until this wednesday, I didn't think there was anything in this world more dangerous to you than yourself. One of the reasons I agreed to U.A, really. Recovery Girl is a blessing."

You just roll your eyes and keep eating.

The abilities to shift up to 28 tons in the blink of an eye, break the sound barrier and precise control over what parts of an object your quirk affects weren't things you were born with.

They came at the cost of years of lone self training at home…
Like that time you tried to go as big as you could and then shrunk too fast, earning yourself a dozen feet high fall… You kept trying, though.

It's a delicious and hearty breakfast, more than enough to feel satisfied, but not enough to feel or look bloated. Momma knows you well.

>"So, tell me hun, what's the birthday gal's plan?" Momma asks you as you start washing the dishes. "When are you leaving?"

You are healthy and feeling fine, so you aren't going to shrink from your chores, not even on your birthday.
Few things feel as bad as being a burden, you think.
Much better to help others shoulder theirs, that always feels warm and fuzzy.

"What, you are kicking me out already? I thought you'd wait a couple more years before giving your own daughter the boot!" You ask, placing a hand on your forehead and throwing back your head in the most exaggerated manner you can.

>"Well, I think I'd know if your pals had planned something here. So I'm guessing someone's gonna pick you up." She answers.

"Nah, I'm meeting Shoto at Rothar Square… Seems to be one of the only three landmarks in this city." You say, suddenly aware of how utterly unremarkable this city is.

>"Welcome to the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, hun. Almost as homogeneous as a good yogurt." She answers, drawing a straight horizontal line in the air with her finger. "That's Enji's son, right? Who else is going?"

"With any luck, Denki. No idea on anyone else." You answer, shrugging. "...I probably should ask."

It's odd, really.
You would think that at least Pony would have said something other than "Happy Birthday".

>"I wouldn't worry. This sorta thing's a group effort, he was just the one to tell you" Momma assures you. "...Except presents. You are on your own on those."

That makes sense…
But would that mean Denki was planning something else?
You don't know.
Stil...

"...Presents, uh?" You ask, innocently segwaying the conversation into a more present-y theme.

>"We can talk about that when you come back. You are a tad old for me to guess what you'd like. Better to ask, don't you think?" She says, cutting you off. "But I can say that you've got mail waiting for you."

"So… I can ask for anything?" You ask her, pushing your luck.

>"I'm not getting you a gun. Other than that, as long as it's legal, I'll see what I can do… Just remember that we ain't made of money hun." She explains.

"I think I have a few ideas…" You tell her.

Itsuka's suggestion still rings in your head.
A bike would be pretty damn cool.

It doesn't take take you too long to be done with your chores, freeing you to get about your day.

A few minutes of showering and dressing ...and a couple dozen of fighting against your tangled hair and you are ready to leave the house.

But instead of doing so, you drop sideways on the sofa and pull out your phone.

"Sorry, but Shoto asked me to meet up with him." You write and send to Denki.

You then slide through your contacts and type another text.

"I'm leaving in a few minutes." You write, sending it to Shoto.
"Can Kaminari come? He wanted to pick me up." You add a second later.

He replies almost instantly.

>"He is supposed to wait for you with us at the fountain. I will talk to him when he arrives." He answers.

>"We are not on a tight schedule, but I am sure you will enjoy yourself more the sooner we arrive." He adds a few seconds later, intriguing you

Shouting a quick farewell to your mother and picking up your hat from its perch, you leave the house, feeling the spring sun on your skin.

…And the buzzing of a new text on your pocket.

>"Oh. Np then, see you later!" Reads Denki's late reply.

Good to see he didn't take it too harshly.

Back on the trail, with the park not being too far, a morning walk sounds delightful.

You feel like you should have asked who else is going to be there, or what exactly are you going to do...
But you also feel like you shouldn't ruin the surprise.

It doesn't take you too long to reach the park's fountain, enjoying the sun and the smells of the park.

"...Ah! the sight and the smell of the Spring in…~" You try to sing a half forgotten old song… not quite pulling it off. "Nah... that's not good."

Being a saturday, there's no small amount of people and dogs on the park.

It'd make rather hard to find your friends, if one of them didn't have over a foot of pretty distinctive horns growing out of her skull.

Life is unfair like that.

Thus, you follow Pony's horns with your eyes and get close enough to hear the clippity clop of her pacing.

>"Stop that! She said she be here soon and you'll be confused!" Your fellow american says, nervously prancing in circles.

You can see she's wearing a simple purple shirt, a simple pair of jeans and no shoes whatsoever, as the sound of her pacing on the concrete path told you beforehand.

Near her you can see quite a few familiar faces. And backs.
Mina is the first you notice, with her peculiar skin tone and trippy shirt, laying face down in the grass.

>"Concussed. But Tsunotori is right, I would not want to delay the plan to bring you to the hospital." Shoto says, looking over the book in his hand. He's dressed so plainly that he actually stands out.

>"C'mon Ts, let them have fun!" Itsuka says, cheering the pink girl. "You almost got it!"

Besides her is Denki, pointing his phone at Mina.

>"I swear I'll get it right next time…" Mina says into the grass.

>"It can't be that hard." Kirishima says, peeling of some bark from the tree he's leaning against.

>"Feel free to try it." She tells him, looking up and spitting a few blades of grass.

>"Make sure to get this on video!" He tells Denki, diving at the grass.

He catches himself on his hands, and kicks his legs over his head in some sort of dance move.
You were about to cheer for him when he flops forwards, falling flat on his back.
At least you know he wasn't hurt by the fall.

>"Nevermind. Shit's hard." He says, raising one hand in a thumbs up.

>"Tell me about it…" Mina replies.

>"You'll never manage it on soft and humid grass." Momo tells them from a nearby bench, tapping her fingers on the briefcase on her lap. You are surprised by the bandages on her left hand, they weren't there yesterday. "It's just too slippery for that kind of movement."

You chose that moment to show yourself, walking right in the middle of the group.

"So, what's this all about?" You ask, looking at everyone gathered.
Ashido, Kaminari, Kendo, Kirishima, Todoroki, Tsunotori and Yaoyorozu.
That's seven more people than you'd have expected to do something for you

>"<HAPPY BIRTHDAY!>" Pony says, lifting you off the ground in a hug.

"<T-Thanks!>" You tell her, patting her back.

She's short enough already but now that she's lifting you, trying to return the hug would only end with you smothering her. It's pretty awkward already.

The moment she lets you go, you are surprised by how no one else says anything other than "Hi!" or "Sup'", but they all grab their stuff and stand up, ready to leave.

"Now, really what's this all about?" You ask at no one in particular.

>"Well… We were doing some plans and trying to think of what to do for you." Itsuka explains, carrying a backpack and motioning for you to follow her. "We didn't get much done, really. Then your classmates Todoroki and Yaoyorozu got in touch with everyone! They got a room for us at Shibuya!"

"A room?" You ask, raising an eyebrow.

>"Karaoke!" Pony answers, throwing up an arm, then scrambling to avoid dropping the small cooler and the bag she's carrying.

>"...What were you thinking? Mmh?" Mina asks. It's hard to tell from her normal smile, but you'd swear she looks smugger than usual.

"...So! Shibuya! Tell me about that!" You say while throwing an arm over Itsuka's shoulders, in a pretty unsubtle attempt at changing the theme of the conversation.

>"That's easy. Imagine all the shops, restaurants and clubs here in Musutafu." She tells you. "Now make them thrice as large, thrice as cool and… like twice as expensive, really. That's one building in Shibuya Crossing."

>"There's also this really old dog statue you have to see!" Mina comments, successfully distracted by your brilliant ploy. "It's so sa-a-ad!"

Your seven friends bring you to the train station, where you start an hour long trip from Musutafu to the almost mythical Shibuya.

You don't mind though.
It's a good time to catch up with your Class-B gals and to goof with your classmates.

Apparently, the place you are going to is one Momo knew but Shoto took care of the rest.
Since she called it karaoke/restaurant you are pretty sure it'd be a great day.
No, scratch that.
No one has harassed you with mistakes of the past and you are already surrounded by friends who cared enough to not only show up to, but to organize your birthday party.

You all take a brief stop at Hachiko's statue to take pictures and, at least you, pray for grandpa's dogs.

Shoto and Momo take the lead, giving you and Pony a short tour of the place, with the occasional comment form the others.

"And if you continue over that street you will end in Dogen-zaka. Avoid it." Shoto says as you walk, pointing at a street that to you, looks the same as the last one.

>"What's in their?" Pony asks.

>"The kind of room Ushi was thinking about~" Mina comments in a sing song tone.

>"Well, here we are!" Momo interjects, pointing at a building and saving you from further teasing.

It's a tall building, looking like it's made of red and white neon lights, plastic and glass.
You honestly can't see the building itself.

>"...The Atsumaru?" Denki asks, looking at the other buildings.

>"Yes." Momo says, checking her briefcase before walking in.

Shoto motions for you to follow, and you do, but you can't help but find the other's reactions… strange.

"Something wrong?" You ask Kirishima, who is looking around suspiciously.

>"Nope. It's just… This place is the best." He says as you enter. "The best."

>"Yes. After all, that is why we are here." Shoto... explains, bypassing the staff and going straight for the elevator, pulling a key card out of his pocket.

You barely manage to get a look at the lobby, if that's the right word, but you did see that it was wood and white leather as far as the eye could see.

The elevator is, oddly enough, huge. Big enough for the eight of you, the woman operating it and maybe three more before it got too crowded.

>"Can we even show up like this?" Denki asks, pulling on the collar of his shirt.

>"That was the point in hiring the room for the whole day. We arrive when we can, we leave when we want. Or when they close." Shoto says, shrugging. "There is nothing I can do about that one."

A terribly awkward minute later, you all leave the elevator and enter Room 210.

It looks more like a department living room, with large sofas, nice lighting and a huge screen, along with an odd tablet and two mics on the table.

>"Its bigger than my apartment..." Pony murmurs, setting down her things and opening her bag.

"What was that?" You ask her, hanging your hat on a perch.

"PARTY HATS!" She shouts, lifting her bag.

It's indeed, full of party hats of all colors and designs, along with some noisemakers.

It's a thing of wonder how she got her's on without snapping the string, but she manages.

She and Mina quickly put theirs on, while Momo just glances at hers, unsure. You take the best one and put it over your broken horn, smiling at her. She finally puts it on.

Kirishima's hair, much to his dismay, was fully incompatible with headwear.
Denki doesn't one one.

You take out your phone and extend its stand, placing it on the table for a group picture.

Something's off though.

A second of looking around tells you what was it.

You quickly put a hat on Shoto's head and hand him a noisemaker.

"Try to have fun, okay?" You tell him.

He nods and blows on the party horn.
With his blank expression, the hat and the noisemaker, he looks adorable.
"C'mere y'all!" You shout, setting the camera's timer. "I want a reminder of this here shindig!"

Sure enough, everyone posed in their own way.
Arm hugs and peace signs were thrown around…

>"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" Your friends shout. Right, japanese people don't like having fun in public, here though, they are allowed to be kids. Or teens, rather.

And you…

You couldn't be happier.

"Thanks y'all. Really…. Thank you very much." You tell everyone present, trying hard to not get moppy. "Now scramble! We gonna be testing the soundproofing for a while!"

From nods to yells, everyone approves and sets out to find a good place to look at the giant screen on the wall.

Luckily for everyone, the place is spacious enough for each of you to get comfortable, which predictably enough, ends with teenagers strewn over every inch of couch.

Everyone but you, as you plop down on the lone chair in the middle of the room, taking the tablet and looking over the catalogue, noting that the screen on the wall started mirroring it.

It has pretty much everything you could want, from japanese pop music to centuries old swing.

"Alright how are we doing this?" You ask, flipping through the pages of categories.

>"However you want?" Denki says, doing what can only be described as the opposite of sitting, with his legs reaching for the ceiling and his hair scraping the floor.

>"Oh! Oh! Mix it up!" Mina suggests, almost jumping. "Let's pic songs for each other the first round!"

"No one will get the lyrics right if they don't know the song…" You answer, looking around.

No one looks abashed in any way. Not even Momo.

>"Well, yeah. But we'd mess up anyway. Making a fool of yourself is part of the fun in singing karaoke." Itsuka comments. "Whoever gets to pick for me, I want something fast!"

You shrug and close your eyes, pointing at random.

>"Nice!" You hear Pony's voice say before you open your eyes, making obvious who you ended pointing at.

"Pick something for me." You tell your oldest friend, handing her the tablet. "I've to warn you, I'm not much of a singer, so please pick me some country…"

>"Oh, I know just the thing." She answers, sticking out the tip of her tongue as she slides her fingers over the screen.

You grab one of the mics and close your eyes, steeling yourself for whatever Pony may have in store for you.

Then the song starts and the lights dim themselves.

"<Come with me, and let's go wander, far beyond the wild blue yonder, out where stars roam free…>" You sing, following the text on the screen.

It's a soulful love song, one that feels really familiar…

Still, you manage to keep mostly on key during the whole thing.

"<And through the whole ride, I'll be by your side, wherever the trail may lead...>" You finish, turning around and bowing, smiling wide.

You have to admit that you enjoy the applause a bit too much, but you feel like you earned it.
It makes you notice rather quickly when the clapping wanes and turns dubious before dying.

Looking at your friends, you can see far too many exchanging glances, and a few glares directed at Pony.

You were about to ask what happened when Shoto pointed at the screen behind you.

Turning around you see the name of the song, "Wherever the Trail May Lead" and, to your surprise, three cows.

It was a song from the Home On the Range soundtrack, a movie you had willfully forgotten about.

"Ain't that lovely…" You comment, rolling your eyes at the seemingly accidental jab.

Had it been practically anyone else, you'd give them a piece of your mind, but it's hard to meet Pony's eyes and be mad at the same time.

She doesn't seem to see the issue.

...Damn huge blue eyes.

So instead of getting mad, you take back the tablet and hand her the mic.

"You are up next, hooves. Pour your soul into it." You tell her, looking up a silly and horsey song, preparing to enact petty revenge.

>"Ready, Ushi!" She says, cleaning her throat and tapping the mic.

You then start the song and the lights dim once more.

>"<Space unicorn! Soaring through the stars! Delivering the rainbows all around the world!>" She sings, not bothered at all by the ridiculous song.

She bobs and prances with the song, giggling between lines.

In the end, after the last line, she's the first one to burst out laughing.
Not the only one though, as you and Itsuka soon follow, with the rest joining soon after.

And so the mood is set.

You easily spent two hours singing with your friends, not worrying about being ridiculous at first, then purposefully being so.

While there wasn't a single bad moment during the entire thing, you can think of a few moments that stood out.

Like Mina's interpretation of Itsuka's request.

>"<Yeah yeah yeah! I'll be so quick as a flash! And I'll be your hero!.." Itsuka sang, sporting a pair of sunglasses and banging her head the beat.

Everyone agreed. You all like her car.

Or the first duo, picked by Denki, which you performed with Momo.
She it took her a bit to warm up to the song, but by the second third, she was singing almost as loudly as you, even if she wasn't dancing along.

"I don't want to become a completely crazy adult!" Both of you sing, trying your best to stay in synch. "I'll live today believing in tomorrow, as a good person!"

Of course, you would never do such a thing without getting something in return.

And boy was it worth it.

>"<Evely man outta be a macho, macho man!>" You don't think anything you had seen before would have been nearly as great as Kirishima singing his throat sore and completely overshadowing poor Denki. Even if they butchered almost every word other than "Body", "Macho" and "Man".

You gotta admit though, even if he ended as a backup singer, Denki gave it his all.

After the second time someone ended un wheezing on the mic, you decided it was time to grab a bite and a drink.

After passing the control tablet around, gathering everyone's orders and subsequently waiting for them to arrive, you all sat by the table.

Like every time you had eaten together before, Pony ordered a salad.
Itsuka had a small cake and a large coffee.
Kirishima took a risk and asked for a small charcuterie table.

Mina had a bowl of a creamy soup you couldn't identify, nor wanted to.
Denki took what you'd call the "vanilla" lunch. A burger.

It almost made you feel bad when your lunch and Momo's occupied most of the table.
What did you order?

Pretty much a bit of everything solid they had, as did Momo.

Due to Shoto just asking for a glass of water, both of you ended sitting by his sides, making him a pretty decent dish.

But seeing Momo's hands, and the bandages on the left one, as she cut her steak reignited your initial curiosity of earlier.

"So… What's with your hand, Momo?" You ask her, taking a bite of your philly cheese steak. This place has everything!

She raises the hand in question and looks at it, flexing her fingers.

>"Uh… Nothing?" She answers, lowering her hand until it's under the table and out of your field of view.

You just stare at her raising an eyebrow, but keep chewing.

>"Alright… I cut myself when I was testing something." She explains, raising the hand again and tracing a line through the middle of the bandage. The line goes from one side of her palm to the other. "I was trying to make something as sharp as possible. I don't know if I actually made the sharpest edge possible, but it felt pretty close, since I barely grazed it."

"What the hell do you need anything that sharp for?" You ask her, trying to imagine how to manipulate a knife sharp enough to slice flesh at the touch. It was fantastic… Until you made a mistake. Then it was really red and messy mental image.

>"Cooking, I think." She answers with a smile, moving her hand as if she was chopping something. "If I got it right, the edge shouldn't dull, dent nor chip! Perfect to cook with… Until you have to clean it. That part is still troubling."

>"...You test your creations on yourself?" Shoto asks, from between you and Momo.

>"Not if I can help it… But it happens sometimes. After a few… Mishaps I've forbidden myself from the first and second groups periodic table." She explains, carefully folding each of her fingers.

You know that the leftmost part of that thing tends to blow up, and that's pretty much all you need to know to understand why she wouldn't want to do that.

While you can make more of anything, including dangerous things like explosives, you can only imagine what would it be like to accidentally make an uranium spoon or something of that ilk.

"Good call." You compliment her. "No need to risk hurting yourself to train your quirk."

You can taste your own hypocrisy.

It was a good meal, filling enough for a lunch but not much more... At least for you.
...Itsuka lost the battle against her cake. Shame!

When the last one of your friends finishes, you start thinking about asking about your presents, and if it would be rude to just ask for them.

>"Hang on. I made something!" Pony says, bringing her cooler to the table.

She then opens the thing, revealing two boxes.
One is white and featureless, the other one… Looks like it has a watergun on its side?
She takes the featureless box and places it on the table, opening it.

It's an ironically small cake, considering it looks like Texas, in quite a few ways.

"You made this?" You ask your fellow american.

Meat? Easy. Anything else? It depends...
You can make a decent bread.
But you are pretty sure you burned a salad once.

So actually baking a cake is rather impressive to you.

>"Yep! Thought you'd like it." She says, handing you a bread knife. "No problem, really. I like baking. The oven warms up the place."

You could enlarge the thing…

"We can skip the song." You say, taking the knife and slicing the cake into eight pieces of roughly the same size.

No need to mess with it, it could change the flavor.

It's a bittersweet coffee cake beneath all the fondant, but you eat it nonetheless.
Shoto seems to like it, and you have to wonder how did Itsuka manage to finish her slice, but not her lunch.

"Thanks for the cake. Homemade gifts are special." You say, wiping the frosting off your face.
>"Oh, that's not your gift. I can't make that one" She says, then coughs."...I almost flunked middle school chemistry."

>"Wait, it's gift time now?" Kirishima asks, looking around for his own bag.

"...Sure, why not." You say, trying to pretend that you aren't stoked.

>"Mine first!" Denki says, jumping from his seat and getting his bag.

You look around, but everyone looks as astonished as you are.

He digs out a pink box kept close by a plastic red ribbon ending in a bow atop it and then comes sit by your side, leaving you between him and Shoto.

>"I'm pretty sure you'll like it." He says, handing you the box.

You smile and carefully slice the ribbon with your nails, undoing the seal and revealing the treasure inside.

It's a block of pink salt.

...Uh.

You don't need salt licks.
Mainly because you are a human being, and even then, you are eating well.
Well, not needing it is not the same as not liking it.
You like salty stuff.

You lift it off the box and give it a test lick.
It's pretty great, actually.

"Thanks!" You tell him, with a wide smile on your face. "I don't really need it, but thanks. It's pretty tasty."

>"Y-you're welcome." He stammers, blushing a bit.

Pony and Mina giggle at his odd reaction, and you put the block back in its b-

Oh, a pamphlet.

"Grilling on Himalayan Salt Blocks." You read out loud, suddenly aware of what you just did.

...You quickly clean it with a napkin and try to not blush yourself.

>"Try mine next, since it's related." Momo says, handing you over Shoto's head the black briefcase she was carrying earlier. "Just be careful."
You open the latches and open the leather container, gazing at the knife set inside.
Five knives, each with a completely blue blade and a gray handle, all held tight in black form fitting polyethylene foam.

You take one out and feel the flat of the blade, not recognizing the material. It feels like some sort of ceramic, though.
Then you bring your finger to the edge, thinking about testing its sharpness, but stop an inch before making contact.
You can make basic connections.

>"I made them for cooking, but after some testing I'm sure they can slice through anything short of steel, so be careful. I guess you could use them for wood too if you feel like it." She explains, looking proud but rubbing her bandaged hand. "They also don't contain metal, so… I was about to say that you could carry them on a plane, but please don't do that."

"Thanks Momo. I'll try to keep all my fingers and to not give the <TSA> anything else to worry about." You joke, carefully returning the knife to its foamy prison. "I'll bring back the case this monday."

>"No, please keep it. It's all one gift." She waves you off.

You are pretty sure the case is bought, but don't argue.
You never had friends to give you presents on your birthdays, let alone rich friends, so this might be normal.

>"Okay… I don't know if mine is up there with Momo's, but I think you'll like it anyway!" Mina says, handing you a purple box.

The moment you take it you almost fall on your face, as the box was way heavier than you expected.

You manage to catch yourself though, setting the box on the table.

Inside it is a brand new set of wrist and ankle adjustable weights, box included. You'll need to turn those Kg indicators to Lbs to use them though.

"We have so little time to the Sports Festival, and I don't think things will slow down after that… But I don't think we should stop having fun and just train all day and bury ourselves under textbooks at night." She explains, pointing at her temple with her finger, drawing a circle in the air with it. "That'd drive us all crazy! So I've taken to use these, along with a vest when I go to the gym. If training takes less time, we should have more time for other things, right?"

You aren't quite sure exercise works like that, but you understand where she's coming from.

"Thanks! I'm sure you'll see me wearing these around." You tell her, happy with her gift.
It doesn't matter what, exactly, the gift is though.
You would have liked it anyway.

>"On the topic of useful gifts, I'm sure you'll get some use out of this one." Itsuka tells you, handing you a brown cardboard box. "I couldn't find a pretty box in time, but cardboard still keeps the suspense alive, don't you think?"

"'yuup. But I'll have you know that I like my pretty boxes. Minus one friendship points for you." You joke, sticking out the tip of your tongue.

You open the box and find a small toolbox, not sealed, but new.
Inside that box you find a small electric mini drill, with lots of tips and accessories, along with a hammer and a few other manual tools like a level, a file and a couple couple of pliers amongst some others.
>>
>"It's not everything you'll ever need, and I'll admit that's not the best in the market, but I figured that you'd like something to start tinkering with." Itsuka explains, scratching the back of her neck. "I assembled it myself. Thought you'd like it more than a store bought nailcare set."

"Well, you got it right." You tell her. Maybe now you can pick up a book and try to repair Tin yourself. Or get someone who actually knows how to to teach you or do it. "Thanks Itsuka."

>"My turn now! Not really something useful though." Kirishima says, handing you the smallest box up to now. "Still, I'm sure you'll like it."

It's also the only one to be actually wrapped up in colorful paper, and the second with a bow.
Carefully tearing up the paper, you find a video box titled "MECHA ANTHOLOGY" inside.
Not something useful, true. But you never expected any of them to be.

"Selected series and movies from the last eleven decades." You read out loud, then look at him with a raised eyebrow. "Pretty neat... I just hope I don't have to watch 'em alone."

>"I think you'll be able to find someone who likes that kinda thing." He jokes back.

"Thanks man. I'll probably start watching it tonight." You tell him.

>"Mine is useful." Shoto says, handing you a paper bag.

Not wrapping paper, just a brown bag.
Still, you open it with the same eagerness you opened the others.
It's a white, woolen blanket.
You take it out of the bag and unfold it, realizing your error.
It's a large white, woolen blanket.

An amazingly soft one, warm to the touch even when you are just touching it.

Before you can say a word, Shoto takes it from your hands and wraps it around the both of you, surprising everyone.

>"It is really cozy." Shoto affirms, and you agree.

"...It sure is." You say after finding your words. "Thanks, Shoto."

>"You'll love mine!" Pony exclaims, clapping.

She opens her cooler once again and pulls out the other box, the one with the watergun lookalike on the box.

Now that you can see it clearly, it's not a watergun, but a jet injector like the ones the vet used to vaccinate the cattle back home. It sends a shiver down your spine.

"...What is it?" You as her, snuggling closer your new blanket.

>"Medicine! A mutagen. Trigger based, but permanent and not illegal. Way weaker too." She explains as best as she can in her constantly breaking japanese. "You can get your horn back! The whole thing! Maybe even more!"

The whole thing… The tip.
The feeling.
The feeling of not-having something.
You like that part.

But...
A mutagen? More!?
That doesn't sound good.

"B-But that's an injection! You need training to apply that kind of thing!" You say, pulling further back into the blanket, and into a one armed hug from Shoto.
>>
>"I… I could apply it if you want." Momo says, not sounding very convinced. "It's not hard to do, if you want it done…"

>"Beyond the sting, I can't see anything bad, really!" Pony says, pushing the box towards you.

Recovery Girl's voice rings inside your head once more...
"...But there's no treatment I can recommend, too many side effects in restoring mutations."

Ushi has been embarrassed her whole life thus far for being compared to a cow, to the point she gladly went to a new country to get away from her past. I don't think taking a mutagen which will more likely than not make us more cow like is a 『GOOD IDEA』
>>

You know what isn't dangerous?
Antibiotics.
You know what's dangerous with Grapefruit?
Antibiotics.

All I'm saying is just because you can buy something doesn't mean it's 100 % safe, and when it comes to drugs, its best to get a doctor to look at it and make sure it is something you are actually compatible with.
>>
>>2317142
>[Accept the gift but don't use it now. "I need to think about it…"]

It's very interesting, but just doing it on the spot is a bit cavalier even for Ushi. This needs thorough debate.

I hope Mic doesn't go with the Yays just because the Nays are divided between "not now", "no thank you", and "fuck no". I wonder if that was intentional.

I'm more interested in why Mic decided out of nowhere have a debate about the use of medicine.

I mean the thread started with us deciding if Ushi should take a pill to keep herself in check and now we have this mutagen stuff.
>>
>>2317646
The latter, I definitely thought about the first

Partly testing the waters on how you all feel on Ushi's self-consciousness and a question to a teenage girl.
How far are you willing to go?
Both in trust for a new friend and to restore what you've lost.

They are similar ideas, but have different consequences.
>>
>>2317867
I feel like there could've been a milder way to go about then a Mutagen as far as trust for a new friend goes. As far as the loss thing, the horn will grow back eventually anyway so it's not all that terrible, plus they weren't a huge benefit to us to begin with since they aren't tied crucially with our Quirk.

But that's just my two cents about it. Honestly didn't expect Mutagen to be a thing, interesting item to add to the universe, unless is was already there before and I just didn't know. In any case I like it.

That makes me wonder...
Would running a Quest by Ranked-Choice Voting go over well?
I mean tallying would be a bitch and a half, and write-ins could make it even trickier, but it'd let people vote and argue for fringe options while still voting against a semi-popular option they intensely dislike.

You take the box and rub your arm. This could do exactly what you want and no more....
Or it could twist your spine and make you sprout a tail.
You just don't know.

And if there are few things more stupid than eating things you don't know, shooting drugs you know basically nothing about has to be one of them.

"I need to think about it…" You say, slowly setting the box down on the table.

>"...You dun want it?" Pony asks you, tilting her head and looking at you with obvious confusion in her eyes.

"I just… need to think about it. Ask a doc, or momma. See if it'll get picked up in any doping test… " You answer, hugging yourself with one arm and tightening the blanket around you.

>"How strange…" Shoto says, leaning forwards and taking the box, looking at it from all angles and then setting it down back on the table. "I cannot find the PMDA's seal."

He then just looks coldly at Pony, who takes a step back.

>"It's not on the banned list! I checked!" She defends herself, puffing her cheeks. "The JSoT has nothing on it ether!"

>"That… doesn't mean it's safe." Momo says, digging up her phone and typing something in. "...It's not on any of their schedules, at all.... And I was about to…"

>"You wouldn't get it." Pony argues. "Were mutants. Its obvious. It only Boosts and restores mutations on us. Nothing bad for her, only good things."

Ashido, Kendo, Kaminari and Kirishima look like they are getting nervous, Yaoyorozu looks a bit shaken, Pony looks like she's about start digging at the floor and Shoto's hand is starting to hurt your shoulder.

Then Pony sighs and sits down.

>"Sowry… I just wanted to give her a choice, not trouble." She explains, before turning towards you and walking close. "<You just looked so sad, resigned to fate… Even if you chose not to take it, I figured you would prefer to have a say, you know? Not only for the horn… You looked so much happier when helping me weeks ago. Not cocky, but happy as Ushi the cowgirl... Maybe it's just me… But I thought you'd like it. Sorry if I got it wrong.>"

"<Thanks for not just jabbing me on the neck>" You say as you lean forwards, hugging her.

"<I'd never! I mean, I like being like I am, horns, hooves and tail. And I think you'd like a bit more of that, if it happened. But I'd never force anything on anyone… It wouldn't be very heroic of me.>" She replies, returning the hug. Over her shoulder, you can see her tail wag.

Sure, you'd like your horn back.
...and maybe a couple more inches up there.

But it is a relief to hear from Pony what she meant, even if you don't necessarily agree.

"Oh well, no harm, no foul." You say, releasing Pony and turning to Momo. "You too. Thanks for trying to help."

>"I shouldn't have offered to poison you." She says, not meeting your eyes.

"...I would have done it myself if I really wanted it, and it's not even poison." You tell her.

>"I got caught in the moment and didn't even read the labels. It could have been bleach and I would have injected you with it." She explains, sounding too mopey for you.

Aren't you all here to have a good time?
This is not good.

Someone more eloquent might have found the words to fix this.
Not you though. Words aren't your thing…

But actions are.
You grab your new blanket and enlarge it, throwing it over everyone at the same time and pulling them close.

You don't say nor do anything, staying there, cozy and surrounded by friends for a couple of minutes.

Once you are sure everyone is calmed down, you shrink it back to normal, return the injector to its cooler and pic up a mic again, intent on ending this on a positive note.

"Anyone up for another round before it's too late?" You ask all around, hoping that someone would help bring the mood back up.

Ashido and Kirishima jump at the call almost immediately.
That kind of contagious enthusiasm is a blessing, it makes it hard to be anything other than pumped up near those two.

Soon enough, everyone was back to having a good time.
You stay there, singing or cheering for the current singer until the sun comes down.
And though you feel like you could have gone on for longer, you don't want to worry Momma by returning too late, with the train back to Musutafu shaving a second hour off the day.

And even with your quirk making moving things in bulk, you don't object when your pals offer to walk you home from the train station

Especially Denki.
It would have been so much easier for him to take a fifteen minutes train from Shibuya to Saitama instead of coming back with you. Telling him to stay at the station after that would have been a bit of a dick move.

Thus, you ended back at Momma's house, looking at the small two stories building, a homely mix of traditional japanese architecture and western commodities that both of you found agreeable.

>"So, this is where you live?" Denki asks, looking at the house the same you did the first time you were here. With middling disappointment.

"'yuup. It's small, but we don't need more." You reply, waving a hand at the house as you pat yourself with the other, looking for your keys.

>"I guess I was expecting something bigger." He says, shrugging.

"Eh. It's fine for the two of us. Has a spare room, even." You say, shrugging yourself before continuing to look for your keys.

>"You came here with your mom, right?" Itsuka asks you, looking at the door. "Shouldn't she be home this late?"

"Uhm. Yeah, why?" You ask her, starting to feel silly. Did you shrink your keys by accident?

>"Allow me." Itsuka says, walking next to you… and knocking on the door. "I don't know why you wouldn't knock."

...Yeah. You don't know either.

A second later, the familiar sound of Momma's hooves is heard from the other side of the door, before it opens slightly.

>"Uhm, Yes?" Momma asks, poking her head out the highest part of the doorframe. "Oh. Heya hun! I see you came back with your pals!"

In a moment, she opens fully opens the door, walking out and looking upon your group.

>"Hi Mrs. Walker!" Ashido and Kirishima say, waving.

>"Ashido and Kirishima, as pink and red as last time. Todoroki, still a handsome young man… I'll take a guess and say that the new boy is the brave soul that asked my girl out… Next time you come here, we are gonna have a chat." Your mother says, pointing at each one as she speaks and glaring at Denki in the end.

"Momma!" You call her out. He's been nothing but a nice guy, even saving your life once.

>"Hey, your Pa ain't here and I don't have a gun anymore. I gotta scare 'em off somehow, hun." She defends herself, giggling.

You aren't convinced that she's joking.

>"And I'm sorry that I can't put a name to the ponytail gals, but I'll take a blind guess and assume the petite hooved cutie here is Pony Tsunotori." Momma says, pointing first at Itsuka and Momo, then at Pony. "Short hocks, eh? I guess you can actually run on all fours. Must be nice, all mine do is being built on high heels."

>"Pretty fast, too!" Pony says, nodding and wagging her tail in a manner more reminiscent of a dog than an equine. "And you are huge!"

>"I'm Kendo Itsuka, pleased to meet you Mrs. Walker." The redhead introduces herself with a bow.

>"Charmed." Momma replies, returning the bow.

>"And I'm Yaoyorozu Momo. I too am pleased to make your acquaintance, Mrs. Walker." The last of the group says, introducing herself as well.

>"Yaoyorozu? My, my. First Todoroki and now Yaoyorozu? You are rubbing elbows with some powerful people, honey." Momma comments bowing deeply and looking genuinely impressed.

"Yep. She's our class pres." You assent with a nod.

Momma just stares at you blank faced, as if you had said something amazingly stupid.
Judging others by their families is stupid, you think.
Shoto is too nice to think otherwise.

Then Itsuka starts looking from side to side, at Pony, at Momma and you.

>"...Are you, like, cousins or something?" She asks.

You take a second to look at your friend, your mother, and down at yourself.

If you had been in her shoes, and didn't know your last names, you would have guessed "sisters".

Of course, that only makes sense if you don't look at their hooves or tails.

>"...Is Tsunotori your mother's maiden name?" Momma asks after a second of stunned silence, her ears shooting up.

>"Nope! Dad's last name!" Pony answers, happily looking up to your mother.

>"Then no, thankfully." Your mom says, lowering her ears and looking relieved. "Anyone wants to come in for tea?"

>"Not this time, I'm afraid. I must return home soon." Momo excuses herself. "But I'd gladly take on your offer some other time."

>"I must be going too." Shoto says.

>"Yeah, me too." Kendo excuses herself. "I'm more of a coffee person anyways."

>"I want to wake up early and jump off a cliff tomorrow." Kirishima says, getting everyone to look at him. "To train, I mean."

>"I'm gonna start running some Kilometers early tomorrow." Mina says. "Staying in shape ain't gonna cut it for long."

>"I'm already up for some chewing up for being out so late." Denki says, scratching the back of his neck. "But I couldn't not walk the birthday girl home."

>"I'm still here, you know." Momma asks, her tail whipping sharply by her side.

"Mom…" You call her out.

>"I should get trotting too. My neighborhood gets scary at night." Pony says with a small shiver.

Thus you bid farewell to your friends, taking time to give a good hug to each of them.
...Maybe Denki's was a few seconds longer than the others, and maybe you had been staring straight at your mother's eyes all the while, but no one can prove that.

>"Boy's cute, but has a snake's look to him." Momma mutters as you enter the house behind her.

"Huh?" You utter, asking for clarification as you put away your presents.

>"Nevermind that, I told you already you had mail." She says, motioning to some boxes on the floor. You think you can recognise one as the thing she kicked under the sofa yesterday.

"Can I open them?" You ask her, looking at the stamps on the boxes.

American, Australian and Japanese.

>"Knock yourself out honey." Your mother replies.

You start with the Japanese box, knowing without looking that your uncle sent it.

Slicing the tape with your nails, you find…

An ironing press, a bunch of white shirts, paper and a printer with some ink bottles?

You dig around the box for a couple of seconds, looking for a letter until you find it.

>"Hey squirt, how's life been treating you? I know you gals moved to Japan… Obviously, or you wouldn't be reading this… Anyway, sorry for not visiting, I have been unexpectedly busy lately. But I'll tell you all about it when we meet again. For now though, Happy Birthday Ushi! In case you didn't know it already, I sent you a kit to make some custom shirts. I thought you'd have fun with that sort of thing. Just be careful with where do you place the text and you'll be fine. Hoping to see you soon, Rikuto." The letter reads. "P.S. Tell Katsumi she was right."

It'll take some time to use, but you think you can have some fun with this thing.

"Momma, uncle Rik wants me to tell you that you were right." You tell your mother, looking behind you.

>"Of course I was." She replies, then asks. "...Does he says what about? I've told him quite a lot of things."

"Nope." You simply answer, moving onto the next box.

Intent on leaving the best for the last, you pick up the smallest box, coming from the land down under.

With some hesitation, you open this one too.
While Chloe has always been a pain, you have nothing bad to say about auntie Akane that doesn't involve her daughter.

"Why and who do they even sell these to?" You ask your mother, raising a white and blue shirt with the caption "<MEGA MILK>" on the chest out of the box.

Instead of answering, Momma starts laughing.

"I don't think it's funny. Maybe hot, but I don't like the implications." You say, holding it outstretched next to you.

>"Try… try it out!" Momma says between bouts of laughter.

You roll your eyes and take off your shirt, then try putting on the new one.

It takes far too much wiggling to put it on, and once you do, you have difficulty breathing.
You aren't quite sure about how to feel about it being too small for you, but you fix it with a small tap.

You've got to admit that a certain part of you would like to wear it in public though, if only for the attention it would bring.

Looking back inside the box, you find a small coin case with a 2014 Texas Silver Round, a small jewelry box with a thin gold chain and another letter.

>"<Yo! Happy Birthday, Dairy Queen!>" The letter starts, making you already regret opening it. "<I've heard you got into U.A.'s Hero Course! Took a while for that one to settle in. All I've got to say is that we are proud of you little cuz, keep it up! Maybe my school wasn't as good, but it was pretty harsh, so best of luck on school. By the by, the coin is from me and the chain is from mum, she thinks girls should start making themselves pretty by your age. Maybe I'll get Maddog to give me my vacations early and go see Japan now that I'm making my own money… And got someone to show me around, I've never picked up a lick of japanese. Signs, Lowliner, the adaptative heroine! Pretty neat, uh? I came up with it myself. Anyway, stay strong!>"

That's odd.
She's usually, how to say it…
More of a cunt.

>"<P.S. Did you like the shirt? I felt like it was made for you. I wanted to send you a condoms box as well, but mum slapped my ear into my skull and threatened to kick me out. Hope you got a nice birthday train anyway, I'm sure you weren't short on volunteers.>" A quickly scribbled note at the end adds. "<P.S.2. Tell auntie Kat I said hi!>"

Nevermind, there's that.

You decide to bot look up what a birthday train is though. By her track record, it probably involves something going inside something else, with icky first page results.

Lastly, you open the box from home.

It's mostly old stuff that you didn't bring with you.
Some clothes you may need, some photos you missed, a hat box with a new hat inside and a small wooden box with a brass comb harmonica within.

It smells fancy when you take it out its box and bring it to your lips, playing a short swift tune.

>"Uh? That's… nice." Momma comments, closing her eyes and bobbing her head along with the tune.

You finish your your tidbit and look at the harmonica. Not too shabby for not having had one in your hands for months. It's not a guitar nor a fiddle, but you can make some things sad and some sweet with an harmonica too.

Like with the others, you quickly set aside the box contents and look for a letter from the sender.

>"<Hey sweetheart! I know I haven't been in touch as much as I should've, and I'm really sorry about that. I've read what Kat sends me, and I can't say I'm liking how this U.A. school has been treating you so far. I feel like I should try to get you to come back home with me, where I know you'd be safe, but I know my girls, and I know we'd have to drag you away kicking and screaming to get you outta there, and that if there's someone I can trust to keep you safe, it's my Kat. I have no doubt that she would gladly carve a mountain down to gravel if you were in trouble at the other side. And it's not like you couldn't take care of yourself either, you are a though one… Heh. I remember when you used to puff your cheeks and try to wrestle down the dogs. No matter how many times they knocked you on your back, you always sprang back up and tried again, until they just gave up… don't I feel old now. But hey! It's you who is getting older today! I wonder if I still get to call you my little girl? I think I will do it anyways. So, my not-so-little-anymore girl, I hope you still remember how to play the harmonica. I used to play that one when the going got tough. Kept me going more than once, say It made me the happiest man in the world the last time I played it, then I stored it in this box as a good luck charm. But I have been lucky enough for a lifetime already, so I thought it was high time to pass it down. Now… Uhm… Eat your greens, don't chew on random grass and don't do drugs?.. God, you know how terrible I am at goodbyes. I better sign this before I scrap it and start from scratch again. Wishing you the best of lucks, Pa.>" The letter says. "<P.S. Sorry about the other envelope, but that one is for adults only.>"

There's a second smaller but thicker envelope behind it. Since it says "For my beloved wife" you hand it to your mother.

She tears the side of the envelope and pulls out a stack of papers thick enough to bore you at sight.

Momma on the other hand, looks giddy, skipping in place.

"You gonna tell me what Pa's apologizin' for?" You ask her, trying to not look as curious as you are.

>"Oh nothing much, hun… Just preapproved papers for a gun ownership licence!" She says, almost dancing in place.
>>
"So we can shoot!?" You ask excitedly.

>"Hell no." She cuts your hopes down. "Only me and only in american military operated shooting ranges or in case of a potentially deadly home invasion. Anything other than that and I'll go straight to jail. Even if a single round goes missing."

"... I really miss the second amendment." You comment, slightly slumping your shoulders.

>"I know! It was coming back to japan as two girls alone and not being allowed to pack heat! Who knows what could have happened!" Momma says, fully opening her eyes and looking like a wounded doe for a moment, then she just shrugs it off "…But this city has pretty much a hero per block, so it's okay."

Then she puts the papers away and looks at you.

>"Now, before I start accumulating compound present interests… what do you want for your sixteens?" She asks.

"A bike." You answer, placing your hands in front of you and mimicking revving up a motorcycle.

>"A bike?.. Not a pedal one, but a motorcycle." Momma summarises. "Like, to drive around town?"

"Oh yeah, a heavy roadster! As much horsepower I can get!" You tell her imagining yourself arriving at school on your new bike and wearing a leather biker jacket. "A Super Four would be the best!"

So cool!
Maybe you could take your friends for a ride!
And there would be no more train rides for you!

>"...Uh." She says, bringing a finger to her lips and biting her nail. "I expected more of a list. Maybe some options..."

"...Is that a no on the bike?" You ask her, feeling a tad let down.

You won't throw a fit but you don't hide your disappointment, letting your shoulders drop.

>"Now, now, I didn't say that." She placates you, scratching the back of her neck. "I'm just somewhat impressed… And weighing the pros and cons of doing this."

"...Are there cons?" You sincerely ask.

After all, it would be your first set of wheels, and you don't really know what it would entail.

>"Let me think about it…" She answers, bringing an open hand in front of herself, then pointing at you. "You'll need to pay for its gas."

"Has to be cheaper than the train." You argue back.

>"Fair enough." She says, shrugging. "What about maintenance? You need to keep that thing running yourself."

"Can do!" You answer, smiling wide and pulling up the toolbox that was Itsuka's present. "You know I have fixed trucks, a bike can't be much harder."

>"...That's convenient." She taps and rubs her chin for a few seconds before speaking again. "Tell you what. Let's make a deal."

"...I'm not liking this. I've never traded for my presents." You argue, not convinced.

>"You've never gotten anything in the same ballpark as a motorcycle, hun." She replies. "I'm not spending over 200000 Yen on a whim. I need some reassurances."

Holy shit.
...That's a lot of money.
That should mean a great bike!

"I'm... interested. Name your terms." You tell her, weaving your fingers in front of your face.

>"We'll get you your bike this week, but you can't take it off this property until you get your driver's license. And I'm not paying for anything other than gas. If you break something, you either fix it or buy the parts yourself. And don't even think about saying that you got no money, you could get a part time job as promoter in an afternoon if you tried!" She tells you, with both her voice and body telling you that she's being completely serious. "I'm going to let you skip school once to give the license exam. Only once, so don't fuck that up… And if you don't pass all your midterms, I'm selling it."

"Wowee… That's harsh." You comment, pulling on your shirt's neck.

>"You can think about it. Or pick something less expensive." She says shrugging before walking towards the kitchen. "I'm not budging, though."
>>
She leaves you alone in the living room with your presents, as the all too familiar smell of green tea retakes its throne as the strongest smell in the house.

The cooler Pony gave you practically shines amongst the other presents, as it draws your attention.

You open it and take out the injector.

You don't really need anybody for this, the box includes a very simple diagram.
One dose, press against the skin and pull the trigger. Boom. Restored and stronger mutations. Don't apply on non-mutants.

Tempting in its own way...

...But you are a minor and shouldn't be taking any medical decisions on your own.
And even if you weren't, asking for momma's advice can't be a bad idea.
It never has been, and you've done it for as long as you can remember.

"Momma… Can we talk?" You say out loud, staring at the box in your hand.

>"If you are going to try the wet calf eyes... I may actually fall for it. But I'll claim my right to call you my calf if you do!" You hear her say from the kitchen, chuckling.

"It's not that… I think it's a tad more serious." You reply, taking it out of its box and looking for something on the box that convinces you on either direction.

You hear her leave the kitchen, but the tapping of Momma's hooves never reaches your side.

>"H-Honey… What is that?" She asks you. "It's not an injector, right? You can't be shooting anything…"

You finally snap your gaze away from the box in your hand and look at your mother.

Her dropping ears, deadly still tail and more importantly, her wide eyes tell even someone as clueless as you that she's clearly scared.

"It is… But I'm not shooting anything. Not yet, and don't really know if I should." You tell her, rubbing both of your temples. "I… Got this thing, this mutagen... Booster, it says on the box. Should fix my horn if I take it, but I don't know if I should. Sounds risky, shaving off more of my own humanity…"

>"You shouldn't." She tells you, slowly shuffling closer. "Ushi, honey, leave the mutagen on the floor… You don't have to do that. Wounds hurt, yes, but they heal with time and grit. You are a young girl, you have both in spades. Scars…"
>>
She pulls on her shirt's neck, and bares her shoulder, showing you two circular scars before turning around and showing two larger ones.

>"Scars are what's left, a testament to all the hard lessons and bad ideas we live through. They don't change who we are, but draw a map of how your life got where it is." She says, then points at the scars on her shoulder. "This ones I got when you were five. I left my little calf playing alone while trying to pull a stump off the field, and little Ushi tried using her quirk on a stray cat that let her pet it. The kitty stopped being so friendly when you made it the size and weight of a lion, and for the first time in years, I feared for my life. Then I realized I was running not from, but at it. I think that was the day that Katsumi Hirayama, the runaway truly became Katsumi Walker, the caring mother… If I'm allowed to say so myself."

"Well… Now I feel bad." You say, not remembering the occasion, but believing her.

You were a handful.

>"I've never blamed you." She says, smiling softly and covering her shoulder again. "What I mean is… You have a clear border, where Ushi Walker the doe eyed, lonely girl became Walker Ushi, the tough heroine in training with enough friends that her own mother can't name them all."

"I hadn't thought about that..." You reply honestly.

>"Now you'll leave that on the floor and I'll stomp it flat." She says, shuffling even closer, almost reaching you. Her flickering ears betraying her nervousness. "I won't even ask where you got it, but never get near things like that again."

To you, that sounds…

Like a really stupid idea, really.

The floor would be ruined, there'd be flattened plastic strewn about and every piece of sharp and kinda-toxic glass and metal would be dispersed.

She may have hooves, but you would undoubtedly end with bleeding soles if she disposed of the injector that way.

"...Can you not, though?" You say, waving your free hand around. "I think I get it… You don't want me to use this thing, and I… I don't want to anymore, either. But that sounds kinda dumb, dontcha think?"

She stops and looks at you, with that worried expression that makes you feel guilty each time you see it.

>"Hun… That sort of thing is too dangerous to keep." She pleads, shuffling closer. "You don't want it now, and believe me, I'm glad you don't, but if you doubt, or change your mind… It could be terrible for you."

You stretch your arm, keeping the injector out of the range of her quirk.

"That kind of thing… You know about it. I'm not going to do it, but what would happen?" You ask her, trying to get any kind of information about the compound.

>"I don't know, and that terrifies me hun." She says, her tail whipping about in frustration. "I'm no scholar, but you are at the age when your body stops expressing new mutations. You are at most a minor detail away from the body you'll have for the rest of your life. Taking this kind of thing now… I fear it could blow that door back open. Say, I wouldn't have minded if you were born with hooves, but if you got them now… That sounds like months of bedrest and painkillers."

You wince.

You never even considered that one. Growing something new or more of something you have would have been weird.

Twisting your legs? That has to be painful.
Like, traumatically painful.

"Okay… How about this? I'll put it back on it's box and then on the fridge. When I'm able to, I'll take it to Recovery Girl. If she says it's that bad, she had one of those needle disposal boxes on her office, so she has to have access to one of those doohickeys docs use to deal with biohazards and can deal with it. If it's not that bad, I'll return it to who gave it to me." You offer her.
>"Didn't you hear anything I said?" She argues back. "I'm not letting you stay near that thing!.. So, please hun, don't make me take it."
>>
"Didn't you hear what I? I told you, I'm not going to shoot up." You tell her, placing the injector back on its box and on the floor, sliding it her way. "...You can destroy it if you feel like you have to… But I'd like you to trust me to deal with it myself. You can check my arms till I do if you want."

She stays silent for a couple of seconds, her gaze shifting between the box and your eyes.
Eventually, your mother just walks over you, taking a moment to pick the box up.

>"If I did that, I wouldn't be trusting you at all. And I do trust you, Ushi." She says, sitting next to you and placing the box on your hands. "...Thanks for telling me, I don't know what I would had done if I just found it on the fridge."

"If I ever do something as stupid as trying to keep a secret on the fridge, I deserve whatever you may think of." You joke, leaving the box of discord on its cooler and throwing yourself with open arms at your mother.

It's a really nice hug, as listening your mother's heartbeat is the most calming thing you can think of, and it only seems to be rivaled by the effect that playing with your hair has on her.

After a couple of minutes, you end up resting the back of your head on Momma's chest as she scratches the back of your ears. It feels pretty nice, takes care of that itch that had been bothering you all day, and gives you time to think.

"You know what? I can do it! You have a deal." You tell your mother, causing her scratching yo stop. "On the bike. I accept your terms."

>"An Honda Super Four it is, then." She mutters, resuming her scratching. "As long as you don't overstretch your time too much, you shouldn't have trouble with the tests or your midterms."

"Thanks. And don't worry about the midterms, being a month after the festival there should be enough time to study." You comment, shrugging and getting comfy.

Tin needs someone to see to its repairs, and its battery is on its last legs too.
The festival draws near, and you need to give your everything to your new routine.
This monday you start training with Shoto... and his father. You aren't thrilled about it, but you have gone way beyond the point of no return.
This wednesday you'll have… whatever Spring Tiger has for you to make up for missing the last wrestling training session at the dojo.

There's also the issue that you'll be leaving school later than normal, as your new cleaning duties eat away at your time.

...And you still have to make time to go to Recovery Girl to check the injector.

All of that without counting the studying you'll need to do to keep up with the trimestral system or to hang out with your friends.

So yeah, you have some busy weeks ahead of you, and very little free time, but you aren't worried.
You know you have this all in the bag, because you are just that good.

>What do you do?

Clearly we have to swing by his house and convince him to ride tandem with us.
Never mind the fact that he's such a stickler for rules that he's never agree.

SuFours have a pillion (that is, a bitch cushion). Once we've had the license for a year, it'll be completely legitimate.
We should find out when his birthday is and get him a helmet.

Could ask him to check it out and run some maintenance with him. He seems the kind of dependable guy to ask for stuff like that. We could totally do it on our own, but talking shop with someone is always more fun.

After some relaxing cuddling, burning exercise and a hot shower, you go to sleep.

You wake up early. 6 am early, to be precise.
Not something you've been doing much since you came to Japan, but something you'll have to get used to do with how much crap you've got to do.

Sitting on your swivel chair by your desk and taking a look at your notebooks and textbooks, quickly making a mental summary of what you are meant to have learned and what's to come.

There's nothing that you'd call hard in what you've learned this week, nor seems that there'll be anytime this term…

But there certainly is a lot of stuff to sit through, not leaning towards either memorization nor understanding.

All in all, no matter how exciting or, at least, interesting a school may be, there's only so much they can do with the required curriculums.

Still, you will do your best and that means looking over all the week's lessons and what you are supposed to see this week, with the intent of being ready for it all.

So you try to ignore Tin's paper airplane fleet and lazily flip through the pages.

...He's making quite a few different models.

By the time you flip by Present Mic's plans for the english class, you are trying to replicate Tin's last creation on a page you absentmindedly ripped off one of your notebooks.

It takes you a few minutes to realise you are losing your time, but without pressure it's hard for you to concentrate.

After getting glassy-eyed over your own english notes for a second time, you decide to take a break and help Momma fix breakfast instead…

Not like you are interrupting anything, since you basically lost two hours without actually getting anything done.

While Momma's bell can be a bother when you are trying to sleep, between it's chiming and the sound of her hooves it's hard to lose track of her when she's moving.

>"Hun? You are up so early?" She asks as you join her in the kitchen, relieving her from bacon duty.

"For awhile now… Thought I might as well use my time and study instead of rolling over and sleeping some more, but I feel like I should have done that instead. Could have gotten some sleep outta it." You answer, carefully setting the bacon on the pan, as your mother took care of the pancake batter.

>"How very responsible… I'd have slept in if I were you. Then again, I never would have tried to get in U.A, so… don't imitate me. I guess?.. It's too early for anything..." She says, dragging her words.

Looking at her, you notice that unlike you, she's fresh out of bed.
You just giggle at her tired smile and carry on your part.

It's not a great or glorious spread this time, just simple gingerbread pancakes, bacon, bread and coffee, but it does break your fast and makes you feel like your day is starting just now.

>"So…" Momma starts, stopping to yawn before continuing. "Sorry… Any plans for today? Catching a movie? Basking in the sun? Going for a run?"

"Actually… I was planning on getting some studying done." You answer, slurping a piece of bacon like a noodle, promptly being glared at by your mother. "Sorry."

>"In your room?.. Or do you have place in mind, hm?" She asks you, raising an eyebrow.

...Not even you were sure you were going to go anywhere else.
You didn't think you were that obvious.

"Just a friend's house. Haven't asked yet, so it might not even happen… Why?" You ask her.

How would she know you wanted to ask Momo if she wanted to study together?

>"Going to study at a friend's house…" She says, with an undertone you can't quite place. "And what are you going to do at his place, really? These are the kind of things it's better to come clean about."

"Study, duh. She's one of the smartest people I know of, so I'm sure Momo will steer me the right way if she wants me there." You answer honestly, wondering why would you even lie about such a thing. "And I know she can handle a bike, so maybe she can teach me that when we take a break."

>"Uh… That's nice hun." She answers, quickly sipping her coffee. "...Wait. Yaoyorozu Momo, that Momo?"

"Pretty sure she's the only Momo I know." You snark.

Momma stares at you for a couple of seconds before talking again.

>"Just… Clean yourself up before you leave. First impressions are important, you know?" She tells you, pointing at you with her tail, as she does when both of her hands are occupied.
"Fine…" You answer her before leaving the table, picking up the dishes.

You don't really give much thought to your chores, washing the dishes and then yourself before going going back to your room and getting dressed.

It's not hard to look nice, looking at yourself on the mirror under a new light.
Pony was right, having a choice in the matter makes it better.
Your broken horn feels like it has purpose now, thanks to your mother's words.
It has no inherent value as a wound, but it feels like a milestone of sorts.

Once you are done admiring yourself, you look around for your phone drop on your bed.

"Hey, I'm having trouble studying. Mind if I come over?" You send to Momo.

The U.A. App can tell you her direction in a second, so you don't ask her about that.

>"I don't know if we have enough material for a full study session, but sure! I'll ready the hall!" She replies, a couple of minutes later.

She's right, but if you know her as well as you think you do...

"Actually, I was planning on getting ahead after looking over this week. To be ready for class." You tell her.

>"Great! We could be ready for the week, or even give the whole month a comprehensive pre-reading!" She quickly replies. "I'll ask Mother when you can come over, I'm sure she wants to meet you."

She's not here and can't see you, but you smile at your phone. You can read her excitement on your screen.

"I'm free all day, ready to go whenever." You send back, nuzzling your pillow to get rid of the itch behind your ears.

You don't get to relax much, as she sends another text within minutes.

>"You would be welcome whenever, but it would be appreciated if you could be here as soon possible." She sends your way.

"Just you and me, right?" You ask for no particular reason. "Think we could have some training too?"

>"Of course, and I wouldn't be opposed to it if anyone else wanted to join us, but I know most people prefer to leave studying to the last few days."

With a friendly response, you put all of your textbooks and notebooks on your backpack and throw it over your shoulder, running downstairs in the exact way Momma has told you not to.

>"Stop that! You'll break your hocks!.. Oh." Your Mother says, laying on the couch and dragging her hand down her face.

"Don't have 'em?.. Never had. Are you okay?" You ask her, noticing that she looks a tad out of it.

>"Oh, yeah. Didn't sleep well, that's all." She answers, waving you off. "Go study with your pal, I'll… Have a salad or something. I'll be fine."
