You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

With the fleetwide leave period over, it was now back to business for the NUNS forces. The fleet was resupplied and repaired and ready to head out again.

However, before doing so, you actually had to figure out where to go, first. As such, you had been drawn into another high level briefing, with all of the usual faces. Dorothea was of course present, though she's back in professional officer mode and only notes your presence with a simple nod. Karla was present, looking just as smug and all knowing as always. Amy looked a bit grumpy, but she was usually like that during briefings. Kellerman was at his traditional spot at Dorothea's side, the ever reliable right hand man. Finally, there was Lara, who looked uncharacteristically tired.

"Now that we are all here." Dorothea speaks up, bringing you all to attention. "Now is the time for us to decide our next course of action."

The holomap then activates, showing the entire Nabaal Sector and three highlight areas near the edges.

"We've been receiving reports of Zentradi activity picking up again on our borders. Nothing like another invasion fleet, but certainly developments we must keep an eye one." Dorothea says as the projection zooms in on the hotspots. "Our first concern is the Helonnar Comet."

The projection then switches to a blurry photo of a massive ball of ice hurtling through space. All around it, you notice the small silhouettes of numerous Zentradi ships clustered around the celestial body.

"This was spotted by a recon Ghost." Dorothea explains. "We believe the Zentradi are harvesting the ice on the comet to supply their fleets with additional fresh water."

"Sounds like a good opportunity to raid them." Kellerman nods.

"Yes, but we do have another problem." Dorothea switches to the second hotspot, a large asteroid field. "There are numerous civilian mining stations in the Torman Fields that have reporting sightings of Zentradi forces. There's a legitimate concern that the Zentradi are looking to cut one of our major ore supply lines, or worse, co-opt it for themselves."

"Quite cunning of them..." Karla muses happily.

"And... finally." Dorothea sighs in exasperation. "The President has asked if Amy would be available to, erm 'welcome' SMS forces that she has invited."

You raise an eyebrow at that.

"What I'm getting at, is," Dorothea stares hard at you, "where to do you think Amy will do the most good? Because that's where you'll be going."

>We can't just let the Zents resupply freely. Send Amy to the Helonnar Comet.
>We've got to protect those minters. Send Amy to the Torman Fields.

"Catering to them just isn't a priority right now." You shrug. "Simple as that."

"Understandable." Dorothea nods. "We'll have to politely decline the invitation, then. We'll detach a flotilla to harass the Zentradi at the Helonnar Comet while our main force folds to Torman."

"And we can get our next round of data gathering done there as well!" Karla nods with a smile. "I think our new setlist will garner some interesting results!"

"I'm sure." Dorothea nods, a bit suspicious. "I want you all to stay on alert, but you're all dismissed for now."

And with that, everybody begins to disperse.

As everyone goes their separate ways, you head after Lara, who's busy shuffling out of the room.

"Hey, Lara, you okay?" You ask, putting a hand on her shoulder.

"Oh, hey cap." Lara lets out a big, loud yawn. "Sorry about that, I just... didn't get a lot of sleep the past couple days."

"And I thought YOU were hard to keep up with." You laugh. "Hard to think there's someone out there that can outpace you."

"I was just caught off guard, that's all." Lara rubs at her eyes. "I forget how much stamina pureblooded Zentradi got sometimes."

"Sounds like a poor excuse." You give a smug grin. "Maybe you're just getting out of shape?"

"I ain't old like you, Cap!" Lara snickers. "It's just that my R&R didn't actually have a whole lot of R&R."

"Can you still fly?" You narrow your eyes. "I doubt Kellerman would let you in a Valkyrie in t his state."

"Good thing Kellerman doesn't tell me what to do." Lara huffs, which turns into an involuntary yawn.

"But I can." You note.

"So then what's your call?" Lara asks, more curious than accusing.

You just sigh and put a hand on Lara's head.

"Just get some rest. That's an order." You say.

"Got it, Cap." Lara sighs, which again morphs into a yawn. "But who's gonna watch your back if something happens?"

"Maybe Julie can." You give a wry grin.

"I am gonna kick your ass so hard when I wake up." Lara groans.

"It'll be fine." You assure her.

"Yeah right." Lara shakes her head. "Hey, what were you doing during leave, anyways? I don't think anyone saw you around..."

"Nothing in particular." You shrug.

"Nnnnnnnn..." Lara rubs her eyes, her fatigue preventing her from scrutinizing your words any further. "Okay, whatever, I think I'm gonna go fall down..."

You gave Lara a little wave when you communicator buzzes. You pick up it up see it's Kellerman calling you.

"Get down to Flight Ops." Kellerman grunts. "We've got a situation."

Of course...

You dash down to Flight Ops, where the Valkyrie deployments are coordinated. There, you see Kellerman and Dorothea standing over another holomap, this time of the Torman Fields. Countless asteroids and other debris littered the air, with a few colored dots signifying mining stations and settlements.

"Captain, good to see you here." Kellerman nods.

"What's going on?" You frown, looking at the map.

"We've just received word that an automated mining platform is under attack by Zentradi forces." Dorothea points to the map. "As the name implies, it's completely automated so there's no people on it."

"Which means we can just ignore if we want." Kellerman points out. "It's far out enough that the only units that can respond in time are Valkyries."

"That station is still of material value to us." Dorothea coolly counters.

"Perhaps it's a good opportunity to test out some new songs." Karla smiles, suddenly inside the room, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed smugly.

"I can work with Julie." You nod.

"Great." Kellerman nods and picks up his flight helmet. "We already got a replacement VF-19 for you. Painted up and everything. The flight settings are backed up, so you shouldn't need to do too much calibrating."

"Got it." You nod.

"Good luck out there." The Admiral adds. "I've already sent at task force that way to respond. Hopefully you can last before they arrive."

"There won't be anything left for them to do by the time they get there." You grin and wink at her.

Dorothea coughs awkwardly and turns away, unwilling to risk showing any sign of affection in such a public place.

"So! Looks like we're flying together today!" Julie laughs as she walks in and slaps you on the back. "Looking forward to it!"

"You seem full of energy today." You point out, which was in direct contrast to Lara's condition.

"Mhm!" Julie nods with a smile. "I had a great time with Lara!"

"Is that so..." You begin to wonder, but are interrupted when Amy punches you in the arm to get your attention.

"Amy, that was fast." You turn to her.

"Yeah, well, I'm getting used to getting this thing on." Amy sighs as she motions to her flightsuit.

"You look AWESOME in that!" Julie gives a thumbs up as she goes on ahead. She had to get macronized to suit up, after all.

"You ready to rock?" You ask as you stride up to your waiting Valkyrie.

"Of course." Amy huffs as she starts climbing up the boarding ladder to the support seat in the back.

"Hey Amy..." You speak up as you go through your preflight checklist. "Is something the matter?"

"Huh? What?" Amy perks up. "What makes you say that?"

"Well, I just get the feeling that you're kind down." You point out. "You know, not quite in a good mood."

"Ah well, why would you want to know?" Amy shrugs. "Actually, why should I have any reason to tell you what I'm feeling?"

Oh boy, was it really...

"Amy, is the thing you're angry at ME?" You sigh.

"...maybe." Amy responds noncommittally.

Was she still annoyed over that little obfuscation you told her when she asked if you were going out with Dorothea? Guess she had sharper grasp of things than you thought.

"I guess we can start off with some of the new stuff. That's what we're out here to test for, right?" You nod.

"Sweet." Amy grins. "Just tell me when you're ready!"

"Got it." You nod as you pull your Valkyrie onto the launch ramp.

You brace yourself as the catapult launches you forward and out into the void of space. Already, you can see the response force, three full squadrons of Valkyries, forming up.

"Yellow Team, get ready to Fold jump." Kellerman warns. "We're going in hard and fast. No solid intel on force composition, so we're just going to have to eyeball things."

"Got it." You nod.

"Fold jumping in three, two, one, JUMP!" Kellerman barks.

You hit the trigger to engage the Fold booster mounted on your Valkyrie and the entire canopy is engulfed in rainbow light for a brief flash. Almost immediately, you can see the blocky, modular form of a mining station, already leaking flames and smoke as Zentradi fighters, pods, and battlesuits swarmed around it like flies.

Your sensors also warn you of an even larger contact. It looked to be some sort of Zentradi assault frigate, no doubt the carrier for all these Zentradi craft.

"All right, Blue Sqaud, Green Squad, you handle the small fry!" Kellerman barks. "Red Squad will do something about that frigate!"

There's a bark of affirmations over the comms as Kellerman's Valkyries split up to engage their designated targets.

"Oh boy, this is looking to be an exciting one!" Julie says happily.

"All right Amy, time for you to shine." You tell her as you begin to throttle up. "Buckle up and let's get this show started!"

"Heh, gotta admit, it's not often that I actually look forward to this!" Amy grins confidently.

Meanwhile, up ahead, the Zentradi frigate sparkles as defense lasers and missile batteries light up in an attempt to repel the Valkyries closing in on it. While Kellerman and his squadron was drawing most of the attention, some of the weapons fire was still being locked on to you...

Amy starts off strong, blasting her song over the comms. Almost immediately, you can see the frigate's weapon systems pause for a brief second, the gunners suddenly becoming disoriented by the blast of music as Amy sings at the top of her lungs.

Meanwhile, you likewise seem to feel something like a fire smoldering inside of you, making your body seemingly more responsive. It was as if Odin himself was channeling his energy through you.

A Zentradi battlesuit attempts to intercept you, but Julie is already on top of it, boosting forward and punching the torso so hard that the enemy battlesuit literally shatters and breaks apart. Meanwhile, Kellerman's fighters manage to get close enough to the frigate and unload their missiles. Explosions ripple across the frigate's hull and like the mining station, the whole craft begins to belch and leak smoke and fire. The engines then flare up as the frigate begins picking up momentum.

"We got 'em on the run!" Kellerman whoops. "Yellow Team, it's up to you to finish it off!"

You home in on the fleeing frigate's engines, which were now exposed to you as it tried to escape into open space, no doubt to fold away to safety. You found it quite odd how a capital ship like this would flee in the face of a relatively small force of Valyries, but maybe Amy's music was having an effect.

Well, regardless, you couldn't let them get away on your watch.

You get a solid lock with your missiles and let them loose, the projectiles streaking towards the fleeing frigate. Julie joins in by firing heavy lasers from her battlesuit's arms and the frigate's engines explode and flame out, rendering the warship into an aimlessly floating hull.

"Scratch one frigate." You say proudly.

"Great job, Yellow team." Kellerman says proudly. "Thanks to our star here, these guys didn't stand a chance."

"What happened to the rest of them?" You inquire.

"They all apparently retreated inside the mining platform." Kellerman grunts. "I'm guessing whatever song Amy belted out seriously messed them up. It probably won't be that big a deal to clear out."

"You're saying you don't need us?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Amy's done her part. No reason for her to stick around, is what I'm saying." Kellerman replies.

"All right, we'll leave it to you, then." You say as you start turning around. "Good luck."

"Awwwww, we're leaving already?" Julie groans. You ignore her, but note that yeah, she actually had a lot in common with Lara, at least when it came to getting into fights and staying in them.

"Heh, I think we've gotten more than enough from star idol!" Kellerman laughs.

"Jeeeeeeez." Amy mumbles, clearly embarrassed.

"Hey, looks like Kellerman's a fan, now." You chuckle.

"It's still so weird..." Amy groans. "Even the regular crew is starting to worship the ground I walk on! What am I supposed to do...?"

"Might as well roll with it." You shrug. "It's one of the the perks of the job."

"Hmmm... I guess when you put it that way..." Amy sighs.

"But stay humble and close to the ground, the regular crew put in a lot of work so that you can do your thing out there." You add.

"Well yeah, I know that." Amy replies. "But that's an awful sweet thing coming from you."

"Just don't tell anyone, especially the ground crews that I said that." You grunt.

"Heh, got an image to keep up, eh?" Amy giggles. "Fuck, that goes for me, too."

"I'm sure you can still curse once a while. Just not on air." You grin.

"Ha ha. Keep laughing it up."

Soon enough, you're back with the fleet, which is already gathering at the designated rally point outside the Torman Fields. It's a quick process to land, especially since you didn't have to wait for a queue, and you start disembarking from your Valkyrie, though you have to help Amy out of the cockpit, as her legs tremble uncontrollably.

"Shit, still haven't gotten used to the flying..." Amy tries to laugh it off as you help her down. "Don't worry, I'm okay now."

"Sure thing." You nod as you let her stand on her own.

"So, um, are you still gonna be busy after this...?" Amy wonders.

"Well, I figured that I'd pay a visit to Karla and actually see what all this 'data' she collects looks like." You shrug.

"Huh, well, I guess I can show you." Amy shrugs and moves ahead of you. "Though, uh, I won't pretend I understand what any of it means, though."

As you follow Amy out, you do note the ground crew plugging cables into the external port leading too your Valkyrie's flight computer, no doubt to pull all of the data within so it can be transferred to Karla.

"So uh, this is gonna be your first time in the lab, right?" Amy mumbles as she leads on deeper into the Pacifica.

"Pretty much, yeah." You confirm. "Never had much reason to meet Karla on her home turf."

"Well, try not to touch anything."

"That sounds like something I should be telling you." You laugh.

"Yeah, feels weird saying that to you." Amy concedes with a smile. "But I mean, really. She keeps so many weird gadgets in there I'm afraid one of 'em is just gonna explode in your face."

"I'll be careful." You try to reassure her.

Amy barely even opens the door when Karla warmly greets your arrival.

"Ah! Amy, Harry! So nice to see that you've come!" She says happily. "And data Amy generated with her new song... it's simply marvelous!"

"What's it all mean?" You frown as you seen lines of code fly across the numerous screens Karla's lab, which was more a large server farm with a few work tables, a desk, and a hell of a lot of monitors. You also noticed a reclined chair that seemed the type to seat someone for a medical procedure. Was this where Amy was spending most her time...?

"Hm, well." Karla grins as she points to one of the monitors, showing what looked to be a brain with several differently colored sections. "It appears, when Amy sings her, well, 'preferred' style of music, it seems to have a much different effect in uncultured Zentradi..."

"Really now?" You raise an eyebrow.

"While most idol songs have generally sowed confusion and awe among Zentradi, Amy seems to have quite the knack of instilling FEAR in them!" Karla smiles as she points the graphic of the brain, several regions now a dark red. "It's quite interesting, really!"

"Come on, Karla." You sigh, looking at all the monitors now. "I know who much you reeeaaaaally want to tell us what you're really up to, so why no just let it all out?"

"Haha, you're certainly a sharp one, Harry!" Karla chuckles darkly. "Quite a wonder you've managed to stay alive this long!"

"Huh? What?" Amy blinks, slightly confused. "What the hell are you guys talking about?"

"Well then." Karla smiles as she saunters over to her work chair and settles into it, legs crossed. "To tell the truth, this all started with a certain idol named Sharon Apple. Does she ring a bell?"

"What, that AI idol that was a huge craze for a few years?" Amy raises an eyebrow.

"That's right!" Karla's smile brightens. "But did you ever wonder what exactly happened to her?"

"You're talking about that "incident", aren't you?" You narrow your eyes.

"Yes, the Sharon Apple Incident." Karla nods. "I suppose I shouldn't be surprised you know about it. Not many people do."

"For good reason." You scowl.

"Ummm..." Amy looks at you and then Karla and then back at you. "I feel like I'm really missing out on something here..."

"Well, basically, Amy," You sigh, "during her final concert, the Sharon Apple AI went rogue and somehow hijacked the SDF-1."

"What the fuck?!" Amy gasps. "How the fuck did nobody notice?!"

"Because Sharon Apple had discovered something we're only just starting to grasp." Karla grins. "As an AI, Sharon Apple could mathematically determine the ideal song to not only please the human brain, but to control it as well."

"Whoa whoa WHOA." Amy shakes her head rapidly. "You've got to be pulling my fucking leg here!"

"Then you can try explaining to me how all of Macross City went dark for an hour." Karla shrugs. "And how nobody present at the concert could recall what exactly happened."

"The official story was that terrorists attacked the concert, disabled the crowd with knockout gas, and 'assassinated' Sharon Apple." You explain further. "Though in reality, it was a couple of NUNS pilots that put a stop to her."

"Unfortunately, it had to be the troublesome one that ultimately deal with Sharon." Karla shakes her head in exasperation. "He pretty much destroyed everything. All of Sharon Apple's memories and data were destroyed with her primary processor, meaning we had to start from square one."

"So you're trying to turn Amy in to the next Sharon Apple?" You narrow your eyes.

"Of course not!" Karla looks at you like you just said something dumb. "She's flesh and blood just like us, right?"

"You know what I mean." You sigh.

"W-wait, are you saying that I can... control minds?" Amy squeaks.

"Well, not yet anyways." Amy looks to the screens of streaming data. "But we're getting close. And if the reports from Brisingir. are accurate..."

"You're not turning Amy into a weapon." You narrow your eyes.

It's starts as a chortle, and then a giggle, and then ends in full blow laughter. Karla clutches her stomach as she laughs uncontrollably. You were certain had she been standing, she would have collapsed and been rolling on the floor.

"And I thought you were the sharp one!" She gasps between laughs. "Don't you understand? Amy is already a weapon! She's been one ever since she sung her first song!"

You want to fire back, but you can't quite find the words to say. She was right, after all.

"I... I want to go now." Amy whispers as she tugs at your sleeve.

"Yeah, I think we're done here." You say as you wrap a protective arm around Amy and guide her out of Karla's lab.

"See you two soon!" Karla chimes as the door closes.

The moment you're out of Karla's sight, Amy wraps her arms around you in a hug and doesn't let go as you make your escape. This whole affair had grown unexpectedly darker rather quickly.

Then again, you probably should have expected this from a person like Karla, right...?
