Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls in secret. But now, with their existence revealed, a great cloud of change looms over Dark Gate Academy.

“Kazuma, we need to hide you.”

“W-wha?!” you exclaim, but it's too late to speak further, as Mayu pushes you back onto her bed and begins to wrap you up in blankets, smothering you in the sheets. “Hey, hang on!”

“You must hide in here,” Mayu explains with focus.

Your mother sighs. “Mayu sweetie, I don't think that'll work...”

You poke your head out of the blankets, resembling a caterpillar exiting its cocoon, as you gasp in air. “Mayu, what's going on?”

“My mother...” Mayu mutters. She does her best to keep her calm demeanour, but you can see a panic behind her eyes. “My mother... she is coming. And... and if she sees you...”

Kiriko places a finger to her chin. “Uhh, anyone mind filling me in?”

Namika smiles and shakes her head, as she wheels over to Mayu and places her hand on the student's arm. “I see... I'm not surprised your mother would still hold resentment towards the Asai name... but it's okay.”

“She... she could hurt Kazuma!” Mayu protests. “I cannot allow that to happen. I must protect-”

“She won't hurt Kazuma,” Namika explains. “Act doesn't know who Kazuma is, who his father is, and I don't think she needs to. Come, I'll take care of this.”

“Mashita-san...” Mayu mutters, tears filling her eyes. “Thank you.”

Namika pulls Mayu into a hug, stroking her hair with comfort. “Of course, dear. You're family now. Anything for family.”

You hear a knock on the door, and as you beckon for whoever's on the other side to come in, Chuichi steps inside, witnessing you wrapped up like a burrito.

“Uhh...?” He mutters.

“Don't question it,” you reply. “What's up, pal?”

“There's some lady at the front gates,” Chuichi explains. “I was grabbing breakfast at my parent's place and she was waiting there, demanding to see... her baby? Either way, she specified Mayu... is that your mom or something?”

“How many arms did she have?” Mayu asks.

You, Chuichi and Kiriko are taken aback, almost losing your balance when hit with that question. “W-what kind of signifier is that to recognise your mom?!” Kiriko blurts out.

“She did have just the one...” Chuichi replied, scratching the back of his head.

“Then it is her,” Mayu nods. “Come along. I do not wish to insult my mother by being late.”

Why do you feel like this trip to the school gates is some kind of death march?

You and your family make it down to the gates of the school, where a rather tall and very odd looking woman stands. Adorned in a loose robe, one armless sleeve blowing in the wind, and eyepatch across her face, a pipe in her mouth... she isn't exactly dressed for the cold weather at hand.

Her eye darts around the area frantically, not even noticing your group as she whistles to herself.

“Mother...” Mayu mutters in a concerned tone, before stepping forward. Her mother, Act Nakatoni, fixes her gaze upon her daughter. A wide grin appears on her face as she opens her arm wide.

“My baby...” she smiles. “C'mere Mayu! My precious baby!”

Mayu hesitantly takes a step forward, before running full force into her mother, embracing her tightly. Act uses her remaining hand to pat Mayu lightly on the head, gently kissing her daughter's forehead as she does. “Oh, look at you my baby... look how much you've grown! It hasn't been a year, and yet... It's almost been a year.”

“Mother, I apologise for my lack of visits...” Mayu states. “I was so busy with the academy that I... I...”

Act shushes her daughter as she run her hands through Mayu's hair. “My precious darling baby, it's okay... momma's here now, and everything will be okay... WHO IS THAT?!”

Act's sudden outburst comes to a shock to all, as her eyes lock on you. She pushes Mayu aside and immediately reaches for her sword.

“Mother, no!” Mayu exclaims, grabbing Act by the hand. “That is Kazuma, my... classmate.”

“Kazuma, eh?” Act pauses, calming down and taking her hand from her sword, but not once breaking her gaze from you. “Sorry, the kid just... looks like someone. I can't put my finger on... who...”

“Perhaps it's me?” Namika laughs as she moves into Act's view. “It's... been a long time, friend.”
>>
Act stares at Namika in silence for a moment before speaking. “Namika... is that really you?”

“Yes, it is...” Namika smiles. “I know, I do look quite different.”

“Oh, I'm not spring chicken myself!” Act chuckles, motioning to her missing arm. “Haha... you know what you and I look like, Namika?”

“What?”

“Old Dark Gate students!” Act cackles uproariously, with a laugh that sends shivers down your spine. “It... it's good to see you, my old friend.”

“Likewise,” Namika notes. She doesn't seem to be too taken aback by Act's frantic speech and wild swaying. Maybe Act was like this in her youth as well, or perhaps your mother is just cool under pressure. “Oh, you haven't met my children yet, when your daughter is so lovely! This is my adopted daughter Kiriko, and my son Kazuma.”

“Your... son...” Act's eye darts to you once more. “Son... with your husband-”

“Second husband,” Namika explains, avoiding the connection between yourself and your father. “This is little Kazuma Mashita.”

“Mashita...” Act nods slowly, still staring at you. You don't even want to know how she would have reacted to the surname Asai. “Well, aren't you going to speak, boy? I hope my friend didn't raise a wallflower!”

>I'm Kazuma, it's a pleasure to meet you Nakatoni-san.

You bow politely, as Act stares at you. There's an intensity in her eye, you can't tell if she's looking at you with focus or in complete disgust. "What a limp-dicked bow," Act mutters. "I don't envy your future wife, boy."

"W-wha?" you ask.

"Excuse me?" Namika raises her eyebrow.

"Sorry," Act nods. "Your boy just looks like he's made of wet cardboard. A gentle breeze could bowl him over, I bet. Can he even handle the cold without mittens?"

"Leave Kaz alone, he's a fragile boy!" Namika protests to her old friend.

You sigh. "Not helping, mom..."

Act examines you, poking her head close to your face, staring deep into your eyes and bobbing her head around your face, inspecting closely. "This face is familiar."

"Well, he is my son!" Namika smiles with a nervous laugh.

"Not just you..." Act mutters. "Something about-"

"AND I'M KIRIKO MAITA!" Kiriko burst out, distracting Act with a firm bow. "It's a pleasure to meet you too, Nakatoni-san!"

"Maita..." Act ponders before turning to Namika. "You mean..."

"Yes," Namika nods. "When they passed, I took in Kiriko as my adopted daughter."

Act shakes her head. "Should have let me know. Maybe then little Mayu would have had a friend growing up!"

"Mother..." Mayu blushes in embarrassment, as Kiriko smiles.

"Well, I'm Mayu's best friend now!" Kiriko explains. "We both are!"

Act looks to Mayu, then to Kiriko, then to you. "My little baby... has friends? Fufufu... AH HA HA HA!"

Act continues to cackle with joy, before turning to Namika. "Come, Namika! We're teachers now, are we not! Show me around! Where is the booze?"

"It's 7am!" Namika protests.

"Your point?" Act asks as the two make their way towards the main building, out of your sight.

You let out a sigh of relief. "Phew, that was a close one... and we may be having a lot more close ones now that she's here to stay..."

"Kazuma..." Mayu mutters, keeping her head down. "I take it you understand what this means? At least for the time being... our romantic relationship must remain a secret from my mother."

"I'll let everyone in class know the situation," Kiriko explains. "I don't want the ape or somebody spilling the beans. But... it sucks that you guys can't hold hand around campus anymore."

"It will be... difficult..."

Mayu takes a step back, her face red as a tomato. "K-Kazuma... That would be incredibly dangerous, if we were to get caught..."

You cross your arms and strike what you imagine to be a confident pose. "Heh, I'm used to dealing with danger."

"Woooo!" Kiriko hollers. "Wow, Kaz! You almost sounded cool for a second there!"

"Aaaand you ruined it..." you mutter, before you and Mayu share a smile. "Hey, we're gonna kiss now. Do you mind not taking a picture of us on your phone?"

"Aaaw..." Kiriko grumbles as she puts her phone away and you and Mayu embrace.

You and Mayu touch your forehead together as she gently strokes your cheek. "We only need keep up appearances for the time being, Kazuma. When the moment is right, my mother will know the truth... and I hope she handles the information well."

The three of you turn to the school and begin to make your way to the courtyard, a day of classes still ahead of you. "Yeah... your mom is kinda odd..." Kiriko points out.

Mayu nods. "She was always an eccentric... but she was never the same after the death of my father. She became reclusive, aggressive... and while her love for me always remained, her heart and mind were shrouded by a want for vengeance. It is... hard to see what remains of my mother in that woman."

You place a hand on Mayu's shoulder with sympathy.

"Kazuma, I hope you understand how dangerous my mother is," Mayu explains. "She may be missing a limb and an eye... but I would hazard that she is still more powerful than any human other than your father. To anger her is a death sentence."

Well, you'd be an idiot to ignore a warning that clear. Stay on Act's good side, keep your secret... or else.

Once you gather your books back at the dorm, you make your way to homeroom. Kiriko filled in the rest of the class, so now they have to avoid calling you by your real surname.

"Act Nakatoni..." Roka mutters. "How do you think she is in battle?"

"Why don't you try fighting her and see, you dumb ape," Kiriko chuckles. "I wouldn't recommend it."

"Maybe I will!" Roka pumps his fist. "I'll go for the ultimate challenge!"

"And the ultimate failure," Kiriko laughs smugly, before you enter the homeroom, to be faced with three adults. Mr. Kudawa, your mother, and...

"Takeshi?" you raise your eyebrow. "Shouldn't you be finished cleaning this room by now?"

"That's still Takeshi-sensei..." he explains. "And I'm not just here to clean! I'm here to teach!"

"Out of the question," Kudawa adjust his glasses. "I'm the homeroom teacher. He was fired."

Namika laughs. "Come on, I know Takeshi from a long time ago! He was a wonderful student, and he's suited to more than just mopping floors!"

You doubt this.

"You would still be homeroom teacher," Namika explains. "Takeshi would just assist, before going back to his equally important duties as janitor!"

"Yeah!" Takeshi yells.

You raise an eyebrow. "Mom, you're bringing Takeshi back?"

"T-Takeshi-sensei..." he mutters.

Your mother nods. "Of course! Unless... is that a bad idea? What do you think of Takeshi-kun?"

"Oh, I just knew it!" Namika smiles. "Takeshi-kun, you'll be an excellent assistant/janitor!"

"Thanks for giving me another chance, sensei!" Takeshi throws your mother a thumbs up, before turning to you. "And thanks, Kaz! You're a real pal!"

"Don't mention it Takeshi."

"Takeshi-sensei!"

As you make your way to your chair, Namika takes time to address the class pooling in. "While I'm here I should introduce myself! I'm the new Vice Principal, Namika Mashita... you know, Kaz's mommy!"

You slink into your chair and await death from embarrassment. As Roka enters the room, Namika tugs on his sleeve. "And you mister... are Roka Abe, aren't you?"

"Yeah, so?" Roka asks, in his usually grumbly tone.

"Well... don't you have anything to say to me?" Namika asks.

"Uhh... how's it goin'?" Roka shrugs, unsure of what to say.

Namika smirks. "You're dating my daughter, aren't you?"

Roka goes red in the face and hold his head down to hide it as he realises the entire class is watching this exchange. "M-maybe..."

Namika chuckles. "It's okay, young man. I'll give you the interrogation later. For now, enjoy class!"

Your mother wheels out of the room, as Chuichi places his hand in his palm in the chair diagonal from yours. "So that's your mom, huh? Wow..."

"You best not be getting a crush on my mom," you grumble.

"I wasn't, I wasn't!" Chuichi denies.

"That's not all on the agenda," Kudawa explains. "We also have two new students joining our class. Please welcome, Soshu and Omitsu... hmm, they don't have last names on the record. Soshu, do you mind telling us-"

"No," Soshu, the heavily tattoed boy states as he and the mute find their seats towards the back, Soshu having to pull and extra desk out beside Akuro.

"Really throws off the order of the class, doesn't it?" Takeshi mutters. "Anyway, onto class, my friends!"

"That's my job," Kudawa glares. "You just sit there and don't destroy anything."

You sit through homeroom, studying intently until the bell finally rings for first break. You pull out your small lunch... a lunch that you had planned to have with Mayu, but now she has to meet with her mother. Kiriko has also joined Roka in getting the third degree from your mother over break, and Chuichi has been pulled away by a meat hungry Kaiya. Your usual lunch mates are missing, so you scan around the room to find somebody to sit with.

>Soshu and Omitsu

Well, there's no harm in trying to make the new members of the class feel a little welcome, right? You pick up your lunch and make your way over to the two former demons, plopping your lunch on Omitsu's desk with a smile. "Hey, mind if I sit?"

Soshu gives no answer. At least Omitsu has the excuse of being mute.

You shrug and sit down anyway, trying to make conversation. "Soshu and Omitsu, right? I'm Kazuma, if you don't remember."

"We remember," Soshu replies. "What do you want from us?"

"I just want to have lunch," you reply. "Do... you guys have lunch? You can share mine if you want-"

Soshu holds up a finger to you, and pulls out a pen and paper. He quickly doodles a lunch box onto the paper before holding his hand over it. A light emanates from the paper as Two lunch boxes pop out from the light, forming into solid objects before them. Everyone in the class stops to stare at this.

"Wow... how showy," you note. "I forgot you guys had those special powers."

Soshu digs into his lunchbox, but Omitsu instead calmly takes the paper. She scribbles onto it before turning it over for you to read.

"It's nice to meet you Kazuma :)"

Omitsu gives a small smile and a nod before pulling the paper back.

"-It's my duty in life to kill every last demon there is," he interrupts. "That's why I'm here. The others may care about helping you people, but as far as I see it, this is only a temporary alliance. When this is all over, you will be our enemy. And I know that."

Soshu scoots his chair back and rises to his feet. "Come, Omitsu. Let's find somewhere else to eat."

Omitsu looks about to protest, but Soshu glares at her. Her eyes dart down as she closes over her lunch box. She stops to smile and bow at you before Soshu kicks a desk and barks. "Now, Omitsu!"

Omitsu hurries up her pace, as you're left at the desk with you lunch alone. Geez, what a dick...

Regardless, you finish up your lunch just in time for the bell to ring. Next up is gym class, neat. Always fun to get some training in, even if half the class are usually too busy oogling Miss Hirashi to focus.

You arrive down at the school courtyard. Despite the snowy weather, the call was made for gym to be outside today... no idea why.

When you arrive for class though, you have a good idea as to why... Miss Hirashi isn't alone.

"A-attention class!" Miss Hirashi states. You can't tell if she's shivering from the cold or sheer fear of the woman standing next to her. "F-from now on, I will only be the gym assistant! Please welcome your new gym teacher, uhh..."

"ACT NAKATONI!" Act poses, holding a kendo stick over her shoulder with authority. "REMEMBER THAT NAME, MAGGOTS!"

The class begins to mumble amongst themselves upon recognising that she is Mayu's mother who they were informed about this morning, but their rumblings only serve to piss the current gym teacher off. She stomps her sandalled foot into the snow, causing it to burst up with impact. "ATTENTION!"

You and the class stand upright and rigid like a row of soldiers, terrified of the sheer presence of Act Nakatoni.

"Maybe you shouldn't yell at them?" Hirashi asks. "I-I mean, gym is a fun class, and-"

"One word out of you and I am hanging you on that flag pole," Act glares.

"Eep!" Hirashi shrinks back as Act surveys the class.

"Okay, you whelps! Your principal, the great and mighty Wei Kobashi almost met his doom at the hands of our enemies! Those same enemies will come for you in time! I look out and I see a lot of youthful, pretty faces!"

"Thank you!" the oblivious Mai smiles.

"How would you like to see that pretty face split in two by a blade?" Act asks. "Or seared off the skin with fire? Or torn apart by a hungry demon? Unless you are willing to listen to me... that's what'll happen to all of you. Now, we'll start by running combat drills. Let me see... who are the best fighters in this class..."

"Watch her pick her daughter..." Roka mumbles.

Act's eye spins towards Roka, staring at him with a smiling fury that even manages to intimidate the big guy. "Oh, I wouldn't put my baby girl through this test... I care about her safety too much. But it looks like this butt-ugly dickweed decided to volunteer."

"N-no swearing..." Hirashi whispers too quiet for Act to hear.

Act throws her finger up in the air as she waves it over the class, swaying her arm back and forth... before landing on you.

"Kazuma! Why don't you take on the gorilla over here?"

"Okay..." you mutter. "At what?"

"A fight!" Act exclaims. "To the death!"

"To the... what?!" you exclaim. "I don't think we should... Roka, we're not doing this right?"

Roka smirks. "Get ready, Kazuma! I've been waiting for this!"

Oh, crap.

"A fight to the death?!" Kiriko exclaims. "You two can't be serious!"

Well, it's not a literal fight to the death... right? After all, Act is quite wild, but you doubt she'd go as crazy to pit two kids against eachother in a fight to the death. Or maybe she might... actually, now that you think about it, odds are good that this will be a death-match. At least Roka understands to treat it more like a simple spar... right?

"Bring it, Kazuma!" Roka yells. "I'll show you who's the true best!"

Kiriko smacks her forehead and shakes her fist. "You stupid ape, you can't just go ahead and fight my brother! Are you crazy?!"

"Actually..." you mutter. "I think this is interesting."

Kiriko gasps. "Not you too! I don't need my brother and my boyfriend tearing eachother apart!"

You hate to admit it, but ever since a recent revelation from Roka... that he was trained by the same man who trained your father... you haven't been able to get it out of your mind. Is Roka a better fighter than you? He could be... and if you don't challenge yourself, you'll never be able to match your father.

"That's what I want to see!" Act wriggles her fingers with a sadistic look on her face. "Tearing guts, raw passion, anger, murder!"

"M-murder?!" Amaya gasps in puritan shock.

You and Roka step forward, your eyes meeting each-other.

"So, you do want to fight me?" Roka grunts.

You nod. "Of course."

"Then we'll fight."

Roka draws his sword, and you yours.

"Have you two gone insane?!" Kiriko exclaims.

Gado chuckles. "You know, I'm kinda curious to see this one."

"Go Kaz!" Mio cheers and claps. Mayu meanwhile remains silent, with a look of concern on her face.

"I'm not cheering either of them!" Kiriko whines, crossing her arms and facing away from the fight.

Roka charges at you with his blade, and you leap high into the air, soaring over the gorilla-like man and landing behind him. You hold your sword out and adopt a battle stance.

"That stance..." Act mutters. "It seems very... familiar..."

"I-It's commonly taught in this school!" Risa throws out an explanation to avoid refreshing Act's memory.

"Right..." Act mutters.

Roka turns, and this time it's your chance to charge. You leap at your rival, bringing your sword down as it clashes with his. You flip back, almost kicking Roka in the chin as you land on your feet and spring yourself forward once more. You clash blades with Roka again, and you're surprised to see you have him on the retreat. You speed and ferocity are just too much for him to deal with, and you're using it to your full advantage. You leap behind Roka, and poke your sword out. Another quarter-inch back and your blade would have pierced the skin of his back, but Roka leaps forward, and seems to be worried by how in-control you've been so far. Roka leaps beck as you leap through the air, catching him with a cut across his cheek while you're both off your feet.

"Wow, Kaz is impressive!" Tami notes.

"I thought Roka was supposed to be a great fighter," Ninsei notes. "But Kazuma looks like he has him completely outclassed."

Mayu stares at the fight, a look of dismay on her face. "No... he doesn't."

"How do you like that mark I just gave you?" you ask, a nice heaping of confidence in your voice.

Roka tilts his head. "I don't know, how do you like yours?"

It's then that you feel the pain in your side, the rush of adrenaline clouding it before. A large slash across the right side of your chest, bleeding quite heavily.

"But... how... when?" you ask, shocked.

Roka's eyes dart to check if Act is in hearing distance before speaking. "You didn't notice, huh? Your dad wasn't around a lot to train you as a kid, right?"

"What's that got to do with anything?" you ask.

"You stupid or something?" Roka asks. "When I trained with the old man, he taught me the exact same fundamentals as he taught your dad and your dad taught you... but he taught me more, allowed me to evolve and form my old style. You're so attached to the form your dad taught you, you won't stray away, even when fighting someone who knows it inside and out! Face it Kazuma, you're completely predictable!"

"I'm... what?" you ask, but Roka is quick to charge. You deflect the sword strike, but doing so leaves you wide open to take a knee to the fresh wound by your ribs, followed by a punch to the jaw which sends you flying back. Roka was... testing you? He was checking your fighting style, and while your actions impressed the class, the ball is still in his court. You're going to have to change it up if you want a chance of beating Roka. The big man stomps towards you as you think up your next strategy.

You may have underestimated Roka going into this fight. You knew all that was physically capable of, but you expected him to fight and act like a simple brute. He played you like a fiddle in the early goings and is showing more intelligence in combat that he does in pretty much any other situation. To combat him, you're going to have to think smart as well, and that means switching up your style. Roka can predict your movements with the blade too easily? You've got more than a sword in your arsenal.

As Roka stomps towards you, you leap back, using your superior speed to clear a good distance from him... though it hurts to move with the wound he gave you. Roka isn't playing around in this fight, and neither should you.

"Where are you going?" Roka demands to know. "Are you some kind of coward?!"

Roka readies his blade and charges, clearing the distance between you and him in a blink.

"Didn't expect me to move this fast?" Roka asks, matching your eyeline as you leap back through the air and he leaps forward to meet you, the both of you off your feet.

"Actually I was counting on it," you smirk, as you summon your rifle to your right hand and fire. Roka's in mid-air, and can't dodge the first bullet, which pierces hisa shoulder and sends him reeling back. He rolls back to his feet as you continue to fire. Roka moves back, keeping his distance while blocking the bullets with his katana, but another manages to slip through and catch him in the leg.

"I get it!" Chuichi snaps his fingers. "Kaz kept his distance, pissing Roka off! That guy loves to keep things close-quarters, so Kaz knew that if he denied him that, Roka would take a huge leap to close the distance, one that would leave him wide open for attack!"

"So, that's the kind of quick thinking it takes to be the top fighter in the class..." Ninsei mutters.

"Yay for whoever's winning!" Alice exclaims.

"You caught me good," Roka admits. "That's going to sting tomorrow."

You laugh, holding your rifle up. "Thanks, but you know this fight is over right?"

Roka tilts his head. "Explain."

"Look at the distance between us," you explain, noting the gap between yourself and Roka on the battlefield. "I saw what happened when you blocked those rounds with your sword. The force was enough to push you back. I know you can't close this gap fast enough that my eyes can't follow, especially not when you're slowed by the snow and your leg wound. Your only options if you come at me are to get hit or be knocked back where you started! You're a sitting duck, Roka!"

Roka looks around at his surrounding, before looking at you. "That so? Then watch this!"

Roka hunkers over to the ground, and begins punching. Punching wildly at the snow beneath, his arms moving with extreme fury, his movements almost too fast for the naked eyes, as his arms become an indistinguishable blur.

"What's he doing?" Akuro asks. "Throwing a tantrum? Trying to burrow a tunnel?"

"No," Mayu shakes her head. "Nothing of the sort. Look at his body."

You and the rest of the class can't help but observe as large quantities of steam rises up from the now red body of Roka, tearing off his shirt to reveal his bare chest as he continues to move.

"Ah, I get it!" Kuin notes. "He's raising his body temperature!"

"What, really?" Amaya asks.

Kuin snaps her fingers. "That's exactly correct! The awakened human's body can exert itself so much more than the average human body, and therefore emissions from this exertion has much greater limits! The ape man is working his body into an obscene temperature, and with some help from the cold weather, is able to produce an unnatural amount of steam from his sweat!"

"Okay..." Chuichi asks. "But why?"

You see why in just a second, as the steam emitting from Roka's body forms a thick mist that shields your opponent from your view. Losing track of Roka in the mist, you keep your rifle at the ready... until a bursting cloud of steam launches from the mist like a violent meteor flying through the air in your direction. You don't have time to react, as Roka's burning hot fist flies out from the cloud of steam, marking itself into your face with a powerful punch that sends you back. Once your rise to your feet, you see most of the battlefield clouded in the steamy mist. You can't even see an inch from your face.

"Hey, I can't see them!" Chuichi yells. "Who's winning?"

"Roka just might have won," Risa remarks. "That guy can barely spell his name but he comes up with something like this? That's an odd fellow."

Your only option is to tread through the mist with extreme caution. Your saving grace in this fight is that Roka can't see you through the thick surroundings either. If you play it safe, and get lucky, you may be able to find him before he finds you.

You take a small step forward, your sword at the ready for close-quarters combat. You take another step forward, one after the other before you hear crunch in the ground behind you, and you feel a burning hot fist driving straight into your lower back.

“H-how did you see me?” You ask, gasping for air.

“I didn't,” Roka states. “But do you know how loud your breathing is? Or your footsteps in the snow?”

Of all the things you expected to happen in your life, being routinely outsmarted by Roka was not on that list. Another punch sends you flying back, as you crash into the snow. You hear the loud footsteps of Roka barrelling towards you, but with your wounds you can't react in time before he bursts into your eyeline and hits you with another burning punch.

You fall back again, as Roka continues to catch you from every side. You stagger back, in serious trouble as you notice that the steam coming from the re hot marks on your body from his punches only work to fog your vision more. He has you beat, unless you can think of a plan. Think Kaz... think...

You've got it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRGrfurZaNQ

You leap up into the air. He can trace your footsteps, but he can't tell your exact location in mid-air. He'll wait until you land and then attack you when you do... but you expect that. Summoning your rifle once more in mid-air, you simply toss is aside , close to where you plan to land.

Heh, as expected, you hear Roka's footsteps rushing towards where the rifle landed in the snow. He'll be shocked to see you aren't there... but that's not all.

“Huh?” Roka lets out a grunt of confusion as you continue your descent, landing on his back. But you're not going to attack just yet, as you reach into your pocket... and pull out your signature headphones and music player. Tossing the headphones over the ears of the surprised Roka and blasting your music at full volume, you leap back and ready your sword.

“Agh, what the hell?!” Roka exclaims.

Now, he can't focus on sounds at all. Even were he to throw the headphones off, you know his ears will be ringing for quite some time now. He can't trace your movements, and you have him right where you want him... just follow the sound of music.

You leap forward and catch Roka with a series of quick punches to the face followed by a kick that sends him flying back. He almost falls into the crowd that the class has formed as the two of you exit the cloud of steam. You tackle him to the floor, with most of your classmates having to clear the way to give the fist fight some room.

“You... you're both hurt...” Kiriko mutters as her eye catches the two of you and your respective wounds. She had turned her back to the fight, but as it spilled out of control you and Roka brought the battle before her.

Roka pushes you back, his body still red with fury as he screams at you from a distance. “One last charge! Let's finish this, Kazuma!”

You've fought well, Roka... okay, bring it on!

“Yes, yes!” Act exclaims with sadistic delight, as the two of you prepare your blades.

“No, don't!” Kiriko cries out, but it's too late, as you and Roka charge with your weapons drawn.

“TAKE THIIIIIIIS!” you both scream in unison... before both grinding to a screeching halt when Kiriko teleports into the space between you.

Roka slides back as his momentum comes to a dead stop, falling back first into the snow where his overheated body quickly melts it into snow. You screech your foot and fall face first into the snow. And that's when Kiriko starts kicking your lower back.

“You idiots!” she cries, wailing on the two of you. “You were about ready to kill each-other the second someone dares you to do it?! You... you stupid idiots! I hate you both!”

“What is going on here?!”

You mother's voice cries out as she approaches the scene. “I heard the ruckus from the main building... Act, what is the meaning of this?”

“Gym class,” Act states, drinking from a hip flask.

“I didn't approve of any of this!” Hirashi protests.

Namika sighs. “Act, we need to have a talk, now. This is not how you teach. Look at the wounds on those students. Kazuma, Roka... are you two okay?”

“We'll be fine, mom...” you reply, pulling your head out of the snow. “We were careful not to hit any vital organs.”

“You aren't supposed to hit any of your friend's organs!” Namika explains.

“We're not friends,” you and Roka reply in unison before an angry Kiriko tugs on your ears.

Namika shakes her head and turns to Act. “Come with me. This is out of order.”

Act follows her old friend back to the school grounds as Kiriko falls to her knees, her eyes watering up and her face red in anger.

“Fly...” Roka mutters. “I'm sorry...”

“Yeah sis,” you add. “We didn't mean to upset you...”

“You two can apologise by making dinner tonight!” Kiriko exclaims.

“W-what?” you reply. “That's kind of out of left field don't you-”

“Deal,” Roka mutters.

You sigh. “At least try to haggle with her!”

Kiriko rises to her feet and walks off, as the rest of the class begin to move on as well. Mayu approaches you and Roka with a rolls of bandages. She tosses a roll towards Roka but insists on helping you herself, nurturing you before kissing you on the lips.

“Mayu...” you mutter.

“That fight left my body flushed. I felt very attracted to you,” Mayu states in her blunt, matter of fact tone.

“Thanks?”

Mayu looks down. “I was worried that your fighting style would remind my mother of your father... though it appears we are safe for the time being.”

“I guess I gotta be more careful around her,” you chuckle, as Mayu nods. You agree to meet with her back at the dorms, and she takes off... leaving only you and Roka behind.

“Our fight never saw it's finish...” he mutters.

You shake your head. “Nope.”

“I had you there,” Roka states. “I had it won.”

“I thought I had it won.”

You and Roka lock eyes. The steam from his boy has begun to dissipate, and he gives you a knowing nod. “You were good.”

“You too.”

“I know that, stupid,” Roka replies.

You shake your head, as the two of you stand in silence, neither wanting to make the first move back to the academy.

>So... when will we have round 2?

Roka places his hands in his pockets and walks through the snow. "Never."

You're taken aback by the reply. You would have expected Roka to be just as excited to go back into battle as you were.

"Huh?" you raise an eyebrow. "I thought you wanted to finally beat me?"

"I do..." Roka mutters. "But you saw the look on Kiriko's face."

You pause. Oh... you're starting to get it.

"You really like my sister, huh?" you reply.

Roka's already red in the face from overheating, so you can't tell if he's blushing or not. "I'm not gonna make her cry again. I want to fight you... but I can put pride aside for the people I care about."

Roka walks off, as you're left to yourself. You never expected someone like him to put aside a fight just to spare someone's feelings... but there you have it. You don't know what leaves you more shocked and surprised. The fact that Roka would refuse the fight?

Or the fact that you still want that fight, more than he does?

You return to the dorms, and hang out with the rest of your class.

"Oh, you were so cool, Kaz!" Mayu fawns a little over you, her usually upbeat nature shining through.

"That fight was awesome!" Chuichi exclaims. "Like something out of a battle manga!"

You shake your head. "It really wasn't all that impressive... besides, it didn't even have a winner..."

"But you had Roka beat," Ukon exclaims. "I know it!"

"He did?" Alice asks. "Hooray for Kaz!"

Well, the praise almost makes up for the other outcome of the fight... having to make dinner for Kiriko. You and Roka spend the next hour in the dorm kitchen, working together... while both being too stubborn to say a word. It was bad enough on it's own, made worse by Kiriko laughing and taking pictures of both of you in your aprons. This is what you get, you suppose.

“By the way,” Kiriko says as she finishes her meal later in the night. “Mom said that one of us should check in on Act, see how she's adjusting to her current lodgings.”

“Okay, and?” you ask.

“And we all agreed that you should do it,” Kiriko smirks.

You raise an eyebrow. “What? Why?”

“Because, you need to get on Act's good side!” Kiriko explains. “If you're nice to her now, make sure she likes you, she'll be more... receptive when she finds out more about... who you are?”

You let out a sigh. “... Fine.”

Later that evening, you make your way to a small hut near the Class 1 dorms. This is were Act will be living for the time being. You enter through the front door after knocking several times without answer. Nobody in the main room... huh. You walk through another door and get hit with a faceful of steam from hot water. The bath, of course she's in the bath.

“S-so sorry, Nakatoni-sensei!” you exclaim, shielding your eyes. “I didn't see anything, I swear! I... I just wanted to see how you were settling in!”

No answer.

“Nakatoni-sensei?” you ask. “It's me... Kazuma.”

No answer... something could be wrong.

Dammit... okay, here goes. You make your way through the door and find Act in the bath, a hip flask in her hand and her head fully submerged in the water.

“Nakatoni-sensei!” you cry out as you reach in and pull her head above water. Act lets out a caugh before crying out a name.

“Kano!” she yells, before her eye turns to you and she adjust to her surroundings. “Oh, it's you... I just... thought I saw my Kano again. And... and that Roka boy, the way he fought, reminded me of...”

>Remind you of who?

"Him."

You look into Act's eyes as she tosses her hip flask across the room, hitting the wall. Behind her eye is a rage, a hatred you never thought imaginable. Whatever Act is seeing in her head in this moment... she utterly despises it.

You avert your gaze as Act stands out of the bath and slips into her robe.

"He was the man..." Act mutters. "The one who killed my husband."

Your father... you don't know the full story, but your mother and Mayu's versions of events places it as Kankuro sacrificing Kano Nakatoni's life in a risky ploy to catch a demon. But... perhaps act knows more?

"How?" you ask.

Act grimaces at you. "How did he kill my husband? Simple. He took a sword, just like this, and he..."

Act pokes you in the belly.

"Rammed it right through my husband. I saw it, I did. With my own eye. My little baby, sparing her feelings I said it was an irresponsible accident, a reckless sacrifice because I didn't want her to be as... consumed by it. The hate. The hate. The hate. The hate... it was murder. Pure and simple."

You stand in silence as Act pull her finger away from your belly and begins to move past you. "And what for? A stupid stone."

... A stone? Does she mean those power stones from the Darkworld? Act begins to sway, and she looks about ready to collapse. You take her by the arm to steady her. "I'll help you, Nakatoni-Sensei."

You lead Act to her bedroom, where she drunkenly collapses onto the bed. You drag her into a proper position before throwing some blankets over her. "Get some sleep, Nakatoni-sensei."

"You're a good boy, Kazuma..." Act mumbles, half-asleep. "Kazuma... that name almost sounds like..."

Act drifts off to sleep, and you exit her hut, saddened and shaken. So this is Mayu's mother... you can't imagine the tortures she's seen. The pain she's felt, the horrors she has endured in her life to make her that way. Still, you come out of that encounter knowing two new things. Firstly, neither you, Mayu or even your mother know what truly happened between your father and Kano that night. And secondly, Act must never discover your real name.

Because if she does, she'll kill you.

Thanks for playing! Quite a few delays, and I had to split it into two shorter session, but this episode is in the books!

>Player Question
How soon, if ever, until Act discovers Kazuma's secret? Will Kaz and Roka face off again? If so, how will Round Two go?

Thanks for running Booker

Depends if we pin being Kankuro's son on Roka

>>Player Question
At the worst possible time. Also it looks like Kankuro might acutally not be as evil as expected, Mayudad probably went crazy because of the stone and he had to mercy kill him.
Hopefully, and Kaz would win.
>>
>>2323234
If Kankuro saw his friend go crazy over the stone and had to kill him because of it
Why would he then give one of those stones to his child son?
>>
>>2323219
Great thread book.

Act is terrifying.

>PQ
It will be the most inconvenient time. And it will be a matter more of who spills the beans first. And what does it.

I am pinning this one on Mayu and the reveal of the scar. At first the idea that a demon did it will placate her. But the truth will leak out.
>>
>>2323270
To keep it away from the Darkworld? or Away from archdemons or human-possesed archdemons who could use it to unleash chaos on the human world... oh wait.
>>
>>2323270
Well if your best friend and right hand man just went insane from exposure and everyone saw you put him down would you hand over the artefact of doom over to them or give it to someone you could trust even if they were a little inexperienced at the time?
