Sorry about the late start guys! Lotta things I had to do, and a lot I still didn't get done (No spicy ramen for me this week, alas! well, unless I go after work, but that ain't happening, haha!)

We've got some modules shipping... either this week or the next, so I may be on the hook to go to Smithfield. I'll keep you posted about that, but just keep in mind that we may get a bunch fewer runs this week. I hope not, but you know how it goes. Quitting seems silly right now, but I promise it won't if that shit comes down the pipe!

Archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016 It's still not that long yet, so if you're wanting to jump in, the getting's still good! Or just ask in thread, the guys are really chill and can help out- and if they can't I'm going to make an effort to this week!

Anyways, sorry again for the late kickoff this week! Let me not delay it anymore by babbling!

++++

The captain’s private wardroom, reserved for her own personal use for entertaining visiting captains or other dignitaries, is somewhat smaller than you expected, though it’s still expensively decorated. The table, with enough space to seat eight, is made of American walnut that looks very, very old- you’re not sure of it’s pedigree, but you’re willing to bet this isn’t the first navy ship it’s been on. A few pictures of the Saratoga and her predecessors decorate the walls, along with a battle ensign flown on the martian war-era carrier in a glass case.

You’re seated across from Aunt Merlin, while Kim takes the seat on the other end of you and your father sits across from her. Anastasia, Stasya, and the captain are all here as well- Stasya in the seat next to your father, while Anastasia sits next to you, across from her, and the captain at the head of the table.

“How was the flight in?” The captain asks, standing for a minute to set a pitcher of water on the table.

Frank shrugs. “The usual. Bit of weather from that system back east, and we were flying rings around Kevin and that crate, but other than that, just fine.”

Merlin nods. “We flew manual all the way in, too. The new computer wasn’t working the way it was supposed to. I’ll have to get the bugs out yet before it’s ready for anything other than our in-house testing.”

“What about you, Morgan? I hear this was your first operational cycle on a carrier?” Frank asks.

All in all we have it a lot easier than Fronk, we get computer landing assist, he had to manually guide in his F-14 back as was routine before he got his own superplon. (IIRC IRL the F-18 was the first jet to have carrier landing assist)

Ghost, could you please answer the question about witchy babies from the last thread?
>>
[x] Pretty easy, honestly.

You shrug. “Pretty easy, honestly.”

He nods. “Looked like a two wire.”

“It was.” You confirm.

He nods again. “I had some trouble with that with the tomcats, back when I was flying those. You’ll get used to it. How’s your mother?”

Out of the corner of your eye, you can see the captain bristle just a bit at the question- the old man is just making talk, trying to catch up with you, his only son, but that doesn’t change opinions that a person’s held for twenty five years, give or take.

“Doing well.” You say. “She’s still staying on the property out by NAS New Orleans, just across the river there.”

He nods- he’s been there once or twice before, visiting while overnighting at the Naval Air Station. He came to watch one of your games, once, while there, but he’s never stayed at the old plantation overnight. You figure that’s reasonable in all fairness- especially considering the feelings his wives have for your mother. Well, that and your mother herself- you wouldn’t put it past her to make another pass at the man.

“I saw that last game against Army.” He says, grinning. “Hell of a game.”

You nod. “They had possession longer, made more first downs, and had more yardage.”

“Yeah, but you had that wall in front of you!” He says, laughing. “Jesus, that guy was huge!”

“Who, Flash?” You ask, smiling yourself- Flash is probably one of your best friends. “yeah, flash is a monster.”

“He’s with the fleet?” Anastasia asks, cutting into the conversation.

“Kinda.” You say- you did get a call and a message on Facebook from him not too long ago. “He took a commission with the marine corps, he’s an infantry officer. He’s aboard the Makin Island in the Sea of Japan right now.”

“Oh, cool. so we might get to meet him?”

You shrug. “Maybe, I guess. If we’re ashore at the same time they are.”

1/2
>>
“That’s not very likely.” The captain cuts in. “The Makin island is operating with the Reagan right now, off Korea.”

You shrug- it is what it is.

“Speaking of, any news out of there?” Merlin asks.

Tabitha shakes her head. “Not yet. Minor movement of Chinese and North Korean assets, but it’s all far enough back from the border that no one seems worried. The usual air defense stuff, petty things with the Imperial military, that kind of thing.”

Merlin nods, then blinks. “Oh!”

She turns to Kim. “Did you two see that strange Magnetic and Mass anomaly this morning?”

Kim nods, then frowns. “How did you see it, though? The wyvern doesn’t have the same package the Fenrir does.”

Merlin smiles, and Kim shakes her head. “Right. Sorry mom.”

Merlin laughs lightly. “It’s fine. How are you liking flying?”

Kim freezes and looks over to you at the question- almost as if she’s looking for direction.

Sure thing!

Witch on witch relationships tend to not have children, since females still can't impregnate females (Katya's mom was a case of artificial insemination, and when i answered that question originally, I worded it poorly, and I'm sorry.)

With that said, modern techniques and technology are promising a future where two witches can have biological offspring- probably within the next five years or so.

also, to answer the question about ages, most witches tend to leave the service as soon as their contract is up- but ones that stay on can stay with the active force in combat roles into their early to mid forties, if they wish. Past that, any active-duty witches a person runs into tend to be in command roles, like Ice.

[x] Indicate she should tell the truth- she’s not sure she wants to do this

You give her a nod- indicating she should tell her mom the truth- namely, she’s not sure this is what she wants to do.

“I-I’m not sure I want to fly.” She says, after a second, causing her mother’s eyes to widen in surprise.

“You don’t?” Aunt Merlin asks. Kim shakes her head.

“I don’t think so.” The girl responds. Every eye in the room is on her now. “It’s just- I don’t know. it doesn’t feel right, i guess. I don’t think I like it.”

Frank looks over at you, and you shrug. “This is the first time we’ve flown together.” You say simply. “But she was having second thoughts yesterday, too.”

“Hmm.” Your dad looks at you critically- as if this may somehow be your doing- and then nods, turning to Kim.

“What are you thinking you’d want to do if you weren’t flying?” He asks

“Helping mom.” Kim responds, almost without hesitation. “I love planes, I just- I don’t know if i can really fly in them. I kind of want to work with the maintainers.”

Aunt Merlin looks thoughtful for a second, then nods. “I suppose that makes sense. But Kim, you know how much flying with your uncle Frank helped me develop a lot of my theories and equipment, yes? I couldn’t have done it without that experience.”

Kim looks at the table for a minute. “I know. It’s just-” She shakes her head. “I can’t describe it. It’s like... like something is telling me I don’t belong in that plane.”

Now the eyes turn to you. “Not Morgan!” Kim says, rushing to your defense. “He’s the one that asked me to fly with him at least till Japan, when a replacement could join us. Something else.”

Now You’re curious. While it’s unlikely in the extreme that it’s any of your guardian loa, since none of them are known to behave in that way- and, being spirits of death, they don’t really have to- the situation does rather stink of outside influence.

Frank's only ever been oblivious about shit related to him directly, not other people. We were less than thrilled to get a Wells for pretty obvious reasons, he may have wondered if we were directly or indirectly expressing our reservation that Kim could pick up.

this is private info, don't say it out loud when there's no need to. For this stuff specifically the less attention on us the better.

I doubt that. Mostly because how would Frank know we didn't want a Wells as our backseater? Unless I'm forgetting something from a previous thread where it was mentioned that our reservations about being around the Wells girls had come up around him I don't think he knows.

If you mean having different branches, I'm not sure as we've only ever interacted with the Ground component. They do have aerospace assets but whether or not they were organized into a separate branch I don't think has ever been said.

There's Masers and Tesla cannons small enough to be fitted on some aircraft, laser counter measures were also a thing at least on a prototype stage.

[X] Better to ask her that in private- you don’t need to be advertising anything just yet.

You decide to ask Kim about that later- if it’s any of the Barons, or even something else- you’d like to know, if only to ask maman about it. While you’d hate to have to call her again so soon, it’s already more than clear that you’re going to have to. Even though she made every effort to teach you everything she knew you’d need, there are still some things that you’re painfully uninformed on- and this is one of them. You almost wish it was just coven politics again- that shit is easy.

“Like what?” Frank asks. “I mean, your mother and I didn’t really click our first few months, either.”

Merlin nods. “We weren’t even really a team till after...” She hesitates a little and looks over at your father. “After Tanana.”

“It’s not that I don’t want to work with Morgan.” Kim insists. “It’s that I don’t think I should be flying with him. I don’t think I should be flying at all.”

“At all?” Aunt Merlin asks, and Kim shakes her head.

“Not at all.”

“Why not?” You ask, looking over at Kim, who just shakes her head.

“I’m not- I don’t know.”

“I think,” Your father says, after a second, “That maybe this is something we should discuss later?” Kim nods, all too happy to drop the subject, and you give a slight shrug- you’re not going to push on this, afterall, though you’re more than a little curious now about her motivations.

“So, aunt Merlin, there’s rumors you’ve got some new variable strikers you’re working on?” Anastasia asks, leaning forward.

Your aunt laughs, and shakes her head, pushing her glasses up with a finger as she does so. “Now where did you hear that? Do I need to give the playmates a lecture again?”

“You didn’t say nooooo” Anastasia presses, getting another laugh.

“I’m working on something for them, not a new design.” She says, after a minute. “That’s all I can tell you though.”

1/2
>>
Anastasia sits back in her chair and crosses her arms, foiled, at least for now.

“So you’re going to show the Japanese some new Wyvern systems?” Stasya asks- Merlin nods.

“Nothing major, just incremental upgrades to the existing airframe.” She says, after a second. “Improved processing, data link, that kind of thing. Most of our wartime prototype equipment is still in development, but we’re getting it out as fast as we can. The active laser defense is a big priority right now, but as it is, it’s going to be limited to a Fenrir-only system unless we can get more efficient conventional lasers.”

“How long are you staying aboard, dad?” Anastasia asks- clearly not interested in listening to her big sister and aunt get into airplane talk.

Frank looks over at Tabitha, who shrugs.

“At least till Japan, so a couple of days. Are we going to be in the way?”

Stasya shakes her head quickly. “Not unless you plan to fly every day. We’ve got space for another wyvern though. I’m not sure if there’s a berth available for you two though.

“The second squadron’s.” Anastasia offers. “We don’t have a second witch squadron aboard, the berth aft is unoccupied.”

Tabitha coughs. “I think we can figure out berthing, since there’s guest cabins available across the passageway, and your father and I are married.”

“Ew.” Anastasia opines.

“So Morgan, this was your first cycle with VDNI active?” Frank asks, before your sister can irritate her mother farther. “What did you think?”

Remembering to greentext my vote this time! Personally I think VDNI is The Hottest Shit, right above the Fenrir itself and Variable Strikers.

On the subject of Variable Strikers, are they like SAWs, where each Witch team has one? Does Merlins new Variable Design look disturbingly similar to a Ho229 Flight Unit from NieR: Automata?

Ok guys, sorry about the lateness! Voting is, of course, over.

Going to be on the road next week starting Monday and may be in smithfield tomorrow and Friday and possibly Saturday (It wouldn't surprise me). So we may not have a thread next week just for time issues- sorry about that! I'll do my best to make it up to you when I'm able, though IDK when that will be. Probably when I finally lose my patience and quit, haha!

I'll run a full, 6 to 8 hour thread whatever day I have off this weekend- though keep in mind I do have to run my ass down to Fayetteville to see the family, too, so IDK when It'll start just yet. Warning on twitter may be an hour or less, so just kinda be aware of that.

[x] It feels like it’s an incredible system, and you can’t wait to get more time with it

You nod. “It was, and it feels like it’s an incredible system. I can’t wait to get more hours with it.”

Frank smiles. “I remember the feeling, after we got it in the Wyvern for the first time. Totally different world from the old days, right Merlin?”

Merlin smiles as well at the memory. “I mostly remember trying to convince you it was a good idea.”

He laughs. “Yeah, there was that too. I’d probably have never gone along with it, if not for Crete. But I’m glad we did.” He looks back over at you.

“I don’t have any time in a fleet Fenrir. Hell, we’ve only ever crewed that prototype they let us use over Megalith.” He says. “But I hear it’s supposed to be able to outfly and outfight a whole squadron of Wyverns.”

You nod. “It actually did. Spellcaster’s lead Fenrir team took on VFA-14 and got the squadron in about fifteen minutes.”

Frank nods appreciatively. “I’d heard about that, but didn’t look into it.”

You grin. “He cheated, they’d have murdered him otherwise. His SO is a computer affinity witch, she prevented them from being able to use weapons, and it was BVR restricted.”

Frank frowns. “Publicity stunt?”

You shrug. “Maybe. In a real fight he’d have thrown away a few billion dollars, they’d have killed him with AMRAAMS long before it turned into a dogfight. That many fighters shooting that many missiles?”

It’s Frank’s turn to grin. “I recall getting around more than a squadron a couple of times-”

You’ve never seen him fight in person, but you’ve seen video, of course. Just about every fighter pilot in the navy has- it’s part of the type training you get when you’re on the T-45 goshawks. Once you graduated to VDNI, of course, you watched the fights over Crete and Eastern Poland- Crete as an example of what VDNI allowed even a relatively inferior pilot to do against a technically superior opponent, and Eastern Poland, especially the battle before the wall, as an example of a VDNI fighter’s force multiplication abilities. But it’s also always explicit- Frank Bishop did this. any other pilot may not have been able to- the lessons serving as examples of what the system could allow.

“You’re also you.” You point out, somewhat flatly. It’s fair that a Fenrir could beat even four or five aircraft without too much trouble, a full squadron is very much a losing proposition, even for the best Wolf teams.

He leans back, looking over at the captain, whom, you’re sure, has voiced that exact same sentiment before. He shrugs after she nods, agreeing with you. “I guess I am.”

The room falls into silence for a minute before Stasya breaks it.

“What’s the news saying about the election?” She asks.

Frank shakes his head. “The usual. I’m trying to not pay attention.”

Stasya laughs. “Typical for you, father. How’s my sister?”

Frank grins. “Which one.”

“You know which one.” Stasya responds.

He laughs. “Lilya is fine, Justin’s on a cruise. She’s making noise about re-entering active service, Justin’s a candidate for a Fenrir.”

“Oh? that’s unusual.” Tabitha says from her place at the head of the table. “Especially for a Wyvern pilot.”

Frank nods. “His record backs it and he was number three in his top gun class, top of his airframe and the first two were Fenrir teams. If he gets a wolf, Lilya will probably go back in as his systems operator. They’d make a good team if she does.”

Stasya nods. “Sounds like her.” She says with a smile.

“Is that what you’ll do if Kim stops flying?” Anastasia asks Stasya. “Fly with Morgan, I mean.”

Stasya shakes her head. “No, not for anything other than an emergency. and you’re being rude, Anastasia.”

“Not really.” Kim says. “I do wonder who would replace me, sometimes.”

“There’s not that many options.” Anastasia points out. “You’re the only other witch aboard with plugs.”

Stasya shrugs. “That may be, but i couldn’t fly with our brother for long. I’ve got my own role aboard the ship anyway. We’ll discuss it if it comes up.”

Anastasia grins, and is about to say something when Tabitha preempts her. “Frank, Merlin, when’s the last you two ate?”

Frank grins- but Aunt Merlin answers. “Last night. We were busy this morning before we took off, and haven’t eaten yet.”

“Then why don’t I have something brought up for us?” Tabitha asks. “You’re all welcome to eat here, if you’d like.”

Stasya stands up, shaking her head. “I cannot. I have work to do, but I’ll be back by to visit with Father.”

Frank nods. “If I don’t head down to your office after we eat. What about you Anastasia, Morgan?”

Anastasia shrugs. “I’ll eat here, sure.”

Frank looks over at you. “Morgan?”

Stasya as a backseater is an interesting idea, though it seems weird to use gifted pilots from different airframes as a backseater.

Impressive though the Fenrir may be, the Wyvern still has more of an air-sup bent if I understand things right. Is there a true air-sup fighter we should be on the lookout for?

[x] You’ve got something to do- you’d rather call maman now and then eat when you get the chance.

You shake your head, standing up. “I’ve got something to do, but I’ll get back up to see you again.”

Frank nods, accepting the answer. “I wouldn’t want to keep you from duty. I hear your CAG is a real slave driver.”

Stasya smiles thinly. “I spoil them, sometimes.” is her only reply before she leaves. You step out right behind her- she waited on the other side of the hatch for you. She falls into step beside you as you head down a deck- to where both your berthing and hers is located.

“What did you think?” She asks.

“What, of dad?” You say, looking over at her. She nods.

You shrug. “We never have much to talk about.” You say. “You Bishops are such a weird family.”

She shakes her head. “As if your Laroux side isn’t strange.”

You shrug. “Nothing strange about our ways.”

“Nothing strange about all those witches they’ve been having you meet since you turned sixteen?”

You shrug again. “They’re a non issue. And I’m sure it happens to rich kids too.”

“How many of them?”

“Pardon?” You say.
“How many of them have you ever talked to outside those dances?”

You’re momentarily bothered by the question, and if it was from most other people, you’d be mad enough to cut the entire conversation. From Stasya it’s a bit different, though.

“Like, two.” You admit. “None in the last couple years.”

She nods. “why not?”

The reason- the real reason- is too many of them made their interest in you too plain- it was either political or more of that vaguely unnerving witching world horse-trading that they do. Not quite arranged marriages, but close- more than close enough for you. Most of them were fine girls- fine enough, anyway, but you learned quickly to be guarded around most people, at least for a while.

“Not interested, I guess.” You say, simplifying the complex series of issues down to four words. “Why do you ask?”

1/2
>>
“Remember our conversation last night?” She says, and you nod. “I wanted to remind you that just because we haven’t gotten any new witches as obvious plants doesn’t mean there aren’t already some aboard. Keep it in mind, little brother.”

You shrug and nod again, wondering about the timing of the warning. Natalya- your other adopted big sister- is the one that’s notorious for taking any insults to the family seriously- and for being convinced that only the best possible type of person was ‘worthy’ of one of her sibling’s attentions. Stasya tends to keep it more low-key... unless she thinks it’s necessary to mention.

You part ways shortly after, returning to the squadron berth, which sits empty for the moment. You pull out your own laptop, waiting for the painfully long boot time before plugging it into a network outlet on the bulkhead. The ship’s satellite communications array has space set aside for civilian internet use- though it’s usually jammed solid, especially shortly after watch changes. Right now, though, the traffic must be much more limited- there’s no lag on anything, and steam can even update a few games.

You pull up Skype and select your mother- not surprisingly, still active.

“Maman.” You say- she responds quickly with a video call.

“Ah, my bebe boy. How ya be on your first flight?”

“Good, maman.” You respond. “I keepin ya up?”

She laughs and shakes her head. “O course not. Ya nevah done dat since ya was little. What’s botherin ya boy? You don’t be usin skype less you tink something goin on an ya need my help.”

[x] Tell her everything- see what her opinion is on Kim, too.

You smile and nod. “Oui, Maman. Be havin troubles.”

“You tell your maman, she help ya.”

She frowns as you tell her about your dreams- especially so at the mention of Baron Cimitiere. Her frown deepens when you tell her about Kim.

“Dat- well.” She shakes her head. “Dat’s not what I be expectin, non.”

“Maman?”

“It not be uncommon for us ta speak to de loa.” She begins. “Us o de ways I mean. But I don’t nevah be hearin of dem be approachin no man like dat, dey usually don’t tell no one but dem witd the gift of scrying tings dat clearly. Dat don be matterin none, no. Be more worryin ya be visited by two of the geude and both o dem say de same ting.”

“So I need ta be listening?”

She nods. “Dey be agreein, ya be listenin ta what dey be sayin. Dey talk o war, you make sure ya ready. Dey talk of a task, ya make sure ya pay attention to what dey want. Dey say they help ya- “ She cuts herself off, something unreadable in her eyes. “Dey say dat, you don’t worry what help dey be givin, oui?”

You nod. It makes sense, to some extent- while they’re not known for making deals all the time, the offers they make to those that respect them properly don’t tend to be one-sided like the ones they make with people foolish enough to approach them without knowing them at all.

“An what about Kim?”

She shakes her head. “Dat could be dem, dat could be her, dat could be de fighter making her get too much into ya head. I can’t tell ya widdout bein dere.”

“What do you tink I should do?”

“Well, boy o mine, ya do what ya feel is right. Do ya tink she need ta be flying wid ya in a war? can ya trust her wid your life? cos ya would be. If ya dont tink ya can, den it’s not fair to her or you ta keep her dere.”

“You don’t tink it’s de barons tryin ta chase her off?”

Your mom shakes her head. “I don’t tink so, non.” She holds up a warning finger. “but dat don’t mean it don’t be dem, neither. But if dey not wantin her dere, she don’t be stayin, no. An if ya go against dem on it, dey mebby get mad about it.”

You nod, understanding your mother’s point- if Kim is dead set on not flying anymore, then the reason doesn’t matter- and it may be safer to not risk trying to talk her out of leaving, even just on the chance of it being related to the loa.

“How’s your daddy an auntie Merlin?” Your mother asks.

Also, I think Frank and Merlin can help with this issue. We could ask for their opinion.
Also, ask Kim if there's something more particular bothering her.

I have a feeling that the Martians are either up to something and the Norks are just a proxy or someone else is going on and the squids are hiding because they're batshit terrified.

Sorry gents. I had to run down to fayetteville again to take care of something with a friend from school who'd taken on a job about six times too big for himself. got it knocked out, but I gotta do laundry and pack for the week. What we'll do is do a usual kickoff post here tonight, and then I'll work on getting in 2 a night on the road, but don't expect any while I'm on site (probably wed-thurs or thurs-fri, but I'll let you know)
